A year after Fellowship stunned moviegoers, the world once again joined a large collection of characters on their journeys across Middle-earth – Gandalf the (now) White, Sam and Frodo, Aragorn, and the rest – but it was one character, with two natures, who would steal the show. Andy Serkis s Gollum, only glimpsed in Fellowship, took center stage in The Two Towers, and Serkis s performance, along with the technology that made it possible, would change cinema for decades to come. Here, the actor remembers auditioning for the role – one he thought at the time was only going to involve his voice. Can you just get me a decent audition for one of the proper roles? “The way that the job had been explained to me was that they were making these films of The Lord of the Rings down in New Zealand and that they wanted a voice for a digital character. One of my first responses to my agent was, ‘Well, you know, I m not really a voice actor. Can you just get me a decent audition for one of the proper roles?’ When I found out it was Gollum it was like, ‘Wow, gosh, that s a really exciting character.’ I d read The Hobbit when I was at school and I remembered [Gollum] hugely from that. I was fortunate enough to witness my cat throwing up a fur ball It suddenly gave me this idea. I d never considered myself a voice actor, just a regular actor, and I had to kind of think my way into it. I started to work on this notion that he s called Gollum because of the way he sounds – and what would make his voice sound like that? I started to think about constriction of the throat, and as I was doing that, I was actually fortunate enough to witness my cat throwing up a fur ball. It suddenly gave me this idea that the whole physicality of the role would be determined by this force within, which is kind of built out of guilt and torment – this involuntary physical action is what caused this sound coming out of his mouth. (Photo by New Line/courtesy Everett Collection) We are looking at this new technology called motion capture. “[My audition] was at the American [International] Church in Tottenham Court Road in London, and I d already done one audition on tape for Peter. I went inside, and down this long corridor there was this tiny little room. It was quite mysterious actually, and I remember sitting in that corridor waiting for my turn. Then I went down into the corridor, went into the room, and met Pete and Fran [Walsh]… They were saying to me, ‘You ll be on set and you ll be working with these guys, but finally you ll be manifested as a CG character; we are looking at this new technology called motion capture. It s in its early stages and we re not quite sure how it s going to work, and it ll be a cross between that and some animation.’ I said, ‘Look, the only way I can do this character is by acting it out, by actually playing it. I m not a voice actor as such. I ve never done that.’ I started to crawl around and get into character and go through the coughing-up-fur-ball voice and sort of getting into the scene, and played the tortured nature of Gollum. Pete was giggling away, and I thought, ‘OK.’ I think they were just really tickled by what I was doing. Pete was sort of crawling around too with his camera and filming it from various different angles and all sorts of different ways of shooting it.”Gollum as he appears in 2003 s The Return of the King. (Photo by @ New Line/courtesy Everett Collection) When I saw the first fully re-sculpted version of Gollum, it totally looked like my dad. Gradually they asked me to play the former role of Smeagol, before he becomes Gollum. Once that had happened, they decided to redesign the whole of Gollum s face just around my features. Then my performance was filmed on 35mm for every scene, and then the animators, using faders… would then match every single facial expression of mine. In fact, when I first saw the first fully re-sculpted version of Gollum, it absolutely, totally looked like my dad, which was kind of freaky and extraordinary and made sense really. Now I know what I m going to look like when I m you know, 22 years older.”THE MOMENT: Gollum and Smeagol TalkThe Two Towers packs its 179 minutes with a slew of memorable moments and sequences – chief among them the 40-minute-long climactic Battle of Helm s Deep, still considered by many the greatest battle committed to film. Yet it s the dialogue between Gollum and Smeagol, a tortured, moonlit exchange between both sides of the one soul, that lingers. The almost photo-realistic realization of the creature impresses, but it s the writing, sharp editing, and Serkis s performance that make it more than just a memorable evolution in film technology. Gollum is basically an addict or a Ring junkie. “The evolution of the character changed en route. Rather than it just being Gollum, we teased out the notion of Gollum as being this almost schizophrenic personality, and we pushed the voice in different directions. Working with Fran Walsh, and [co-writer] Philippa Boyens as well, we pushed the notion of Gollum being the more visceral, brutal kind of survivor character and Smeagol being the young, innocent sibling, if you like – abused sibling. I had to find for myself something tangible, something real, in the real world, so that the power of the Ring would resonate, and so for me it was really about addiction. Gollum is basically an addict or a Ring junkie. His physicality as such was very much based on someone suffering the terrible physical symptoms of a very strong addiction. It s tearing the body apart and tearing the mind apart, and the decrepitude of his body and the tortured, twisted, emaciated look was the externalizing of what was going on inside his mind and soul. Then Philippa and Fran pushed the writing to really embolden those ideas, and that was exemplified with the scene in The Two Towers where Gollum literally talks to himself. That was something that s actually happened since. For instance, in the Apes movies that I was involved in, we had direct capture on set with motion-capture cameras in the trees – on location, capturing everything in one take. At that point, in the early stages, especially in The Two Towers, I would have to go back onto a motion-capture stage and repeat [the scene] a third time [after shooting it first with the other actors, then again reading lines out of frame with the other actors shooting it]. I would have to then do my performance again on my own in a motion-capture stage. We shot [the scene of Gollum and Smeagol talking] on a location, so the tree that he used and the rocks that he was sort of hiding behind and going either side of in the first few shots, that was all built. That was a real set, and we shot all that on a location, doing that two-part process. We constructed the whole scene like that, with the fallen log and Gollum eventually jumping down and spinning around with all the leaves and all of that being kicked up. You can just concentrate on performance. “There was rewriting. The thing is with Fran and Philippa and Pete, there s always a sort of constant rewriting of the script and evolving the script, and with every take they re looking for something new and something fresh in the moment. Also, from a writing point of view, once they ve shot something, they like to be able to go back in, and with performance capture you have that ability. That is one of the joyful things about performance capture: the ability to completely improvise and try something different, and keep going and keep going and exploring, without the pressure of being on a live-action film set. You re not going to run out of film, you don t have to change lights, you don t have to do anything. You can just concentrate on performance, which is an amazing thing.”THE IMPACT: An Unexpected Journey The Lord of the Rings trilogy would make almost billion worldwide, and its conclusion, The Return of the King, would win Best Picture at the Academy Awards (the two previous films were also nominated in the category, but neither won). The trilogy s impact on film, and studio decision-making, was huge: the 2000s saw a number of fantasy titles get the green light, Jackson would later return to Middle-earth with The Hobbit films, and viewers of TV smash Game of Thrones say its makers owe much to what Jackson and his team put into cinemas every December between 2001 and 2003. For Serkis, The Lord of the Rings was life-changing; he would become the go-to actor for performance-capture roles, starring in The Rise of the Planet of the Apes and its sequels as Caesar, as King Kong in Jackson s 2005 take on that classic story, and he would direct his own film, Mowgli, which would push technology to new places. With each step, the technology advanced and the wow-factor intensified – what remained constant was the strength of the Serkis performance driving it. If I lifted up my arm, Gollum would lift his. The first epiphany moment for me, where I realized how much I loved performance capture, or motion capture as it was at the time, was being on the motion-capture stage and seeing in real time: If I lifted up my arm, Gollum would lift his. I could see a gray-shaded model of Gollum lifting up his arm, and that for me cemented this affair, really, with the technology, and the realization of what it could actually do. I ll never forget [when I first saw the character on the big screen]. It was at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York; it was at the world premiere of The Two Towers. The movie just was so potent and powerful, with the halls of Helm s Deep. Politically where we were – it was just post-911 and there was this sense of doom, of just the world changing. The world seemed so fractured and dangerous and frightening, and seeing that film, it just felt so much like it was reflecting that in some way. It was a very potent experience; such an amazing experience seeing it with a live audience. I did have this extraordinary experience when [the scene with Gollum and Smeagol talking] came up. I could literally feel the audience leaning in and just, like, not quite sure what this was. They couldn t quite work it out. Was this an actor? Was this a creature? That character for me defined a big, big turning point in my career, and opened up a huge world. You know, there isn t a single day that goes past when someone doesn t come up to me and talk to me about Gollum. I mean, it really is quite extraordinary. He s a beloved character, because I think everyone feels something for him. They either feel something very strongly about him, towards him, or they kind of feel themselves to be like him in some way. Awesome or Numbing ? The Verdict on Chapter 3 s Action.Keanu probably says 20 words at max but the action *puts figers to lips and kisses* Muwa it s a perfect! Every movie they have more and more awesome scenes of actions. This time around they said screw just the gun-fu lets do hand to hand and knife throwing. It was great. Anticipating the baba yaga s return.  Lisa S., 5 starsI m a massive fan of the John Wick franchise, but the weaknesses of the franchise began to show in John Wick 3. It seems like the writers are beginning to try and solve their problems by throwing more action in the movie and hope it draws the viewers attention away from the flaws in the plot. This is something that worked to the betterment of the first two films, however in the 3rd installment of John Wick the action starts to become almost numbing, especially in the third act of the film. All-in-all the movie was still able to satisfy my itch for wide-lens action sequences, with amazing choreography. I would definitely still recommend this film to a friend, despite the flaws I outlined earlier. How many different ways can you kill a person and I am sick of the mirror room. Can t we come up with anything else? What made the first two movies good was a little thought was put into them. The first 30 minutes were off to a great start, followed by quite the satisfying ending. The Batman took a long time to take shape, but fans are finally starting to get the full picture of director Matt Reeves take on the character.At 2021 s DC FanDome event, fans of the oft-rebooted movie hero got a nice glimpse of what to expect from the film thanks to a new trailer. In it, the Riddler (Paul Dano) is taken into custody by the Gotham City Police. But that seems to have little effect on his bigger plan, which involves the Batman (Robert Pattinson), Selina Kyle (Zoe Kravitz), and local mobster Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Farrell). Its mix of Batman ’89 theatrics and Batman Begins realism may yet prove to be the right mix for this next iteration of the Caped Crusader.”At 2020 s DC FanDome, Reeves revealed the movie will take place in year two of Batman s crime-fighting career  an assertion backed up in the trailer by the reveal of a Batsignal a period in which he is adjusting to his new life and Gotham is adjusting to him. An HBO Max series tentatively titled Gotham P.D. will focus on Batman s year one, and follow corrupt cops in the city s police department.Let s take a look at more of what we know about the movie from earlier reveals as well as the history of how the project came together.[Updated on October 16, 2021]How The Batman Became Untangled from the DCEU(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Plans for the film began in 2014, when Warner Bros. had a massive, Marvel-style DC film universe in mind. An important pillar of that concept was Ben Affleck behind the cowl of the Dark Knight and in the director’s chair for a film called The Batman. It was to tie in to the character as he played it in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League and would follow the events of both films. Affleck teased the arrival of the DC Comics villain Deathstroke to his tale by posting a costume test with actor Joe Manganiello under the mask. The actor was later set to play the character in the film and made a brief appearance in the Justice League stinger scene. Some reports suggest the film would have taken place inside Arkham Asylum.But then things began to unravel. Despite commercial success, Batman v Superman was perceived as a creative misfire even as cameras began to roll on Justice League – leading to a rethink of the film s plot. Warner Bros. asked Affleck to re-write his script for The Batman as the shape of the film universe changed alongside Justice League. In January of 2017, he had stepped down as director with Matt Reeves soon taking over. He also eventually handed script duties over to Reeves and Mattson Tomlin, leaving many to wonder if Affleck would even star in the picture.Almost a full year of speculation followed until Affleck, then dealing with a number of personal problems, set the record straight in January of 2019, announcing his complete departure from the project. And with that, the original vision for The Batman gave way to Reeves’ new take.The New Players: Robert Pattinson, Paul Dano, Zoe Kravitz, and More(Photo by Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)Even before Affleck’s departure was confirmed, many began to speculate about the seventh person to wear the cowl in a theatrically released, live-action film. Rumors began to circle around The Lighthouse star Robert Pattinson, who emerged as the favorite and eventually took the role in May of 2019.Over the course of the following months, a cast list began to emerge, including Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle (a.k.a. Catwoman), Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, and Paul Dano as the Riddler, whose civilian identity in the film, Edward Nashton, is a one of his known aliases in the pages of DC comics. Over the Fall of 2019, Colin Farrell signed on as Oswald Cobblepot and Andy Serkis also stepped up to take over as Alfred Pennyworth from Jeremy Irons, who had played the character for Affleck s Batman. Other cast members include John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as District Attorney Gil Colson, Con O’Neill as Chief Macheknize Bock, Alex Ferns as police commissioner Peter Savage, and Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál. Teen Wolf’s Max Carver and Charlie Carver also joined the cast, leading some to suggest they may play Batman rogues Tweedledum and Tweedledee.Behind the camera, Reeves’ crew includes director of photography Greig Fraser, editors William Hoy and Tyler Nelson, production designer James Chinlund and costume designer Jacqueline Durran. Reeves is producing the film alongside Dylan Clark while Simon Emanuel, Walter Hamada, Chantal Nong, and Michael Uslan serve as executive producers. Michael Giacchino is set to score the film.At DC FanDome 2020, Reeves teased that, just as Batman is still finding himself in the movie, so too are the rogues gallery of villains we meet. As seen in the trailer, when we first encounter Selina Kyle, she s not Catwoman; ditto Farrell s Oswald Cobblepot, who s destined to be crime kingpin, the Penguin.From that list of cast and crew, a sense of The Batman began to emerge… as did a potential source of its story.The Long Halloween: A Serial Killer Stalks Batman and Gotham(Photo by DC Comics)Though Reeves referred to the plot as an original story from the moment he began answering questions about the film, the number of villains and supporting characters in the cast left many to wonder if it might be taking inspiration from Batman: The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale.Set after the events of the seminal Batman: Year One storyline, it sees Batman attempting to learn the identity of a serial killer known as Holiday. It also accomplishes a few other things, like chronicling the year mobsters lost control of Gotham City to the costumed supervillains. The 13-issue miniseries was followed up by Batman: Dark Victory and Catwoman: When in Rome, which saw Loeb and Sale return to some of The Long Halloween’s ideas, including the continuing deterioration of Gotham s organized crime families.But the key to The Long Halloween was its expansive cast and Batman encountering a mystery he could not easily crack.Early on, Reeves said he wanted to emphasize Batman as the world’s greatest detective – an element of the character generally downplayed in the more action-oriented Batman and Dark Knight film cycles – while also playing up the noirish elements inherent in the concept. Reeves said at DC FanDome 2020 that noirs like Chinatown have been a big inspiration for his approach to the material. Additionally, the costume test video of Pattinson in the batsuit and the Batmobile pictures clearly illustrate Batman during an early part of of his career, making the case for The Long Halloween as a primary source stronger.(Photo by Warner Bros.)It would not be the first time, though, the book was called upon as a source of inspiration or, indeed, the first time a Batman film used one of the better-known Batman stories in its development. The Dark Knight used one or two elements from the story while also grabbing from The Killing Joke. The Dark Knight Rises also pulled from the “No Man’s Land” story. But this should not suggest The Batman is a straight adaptation of The Long Halloween, as someone key to that story is missing from the film: Harvey Dent.The Long Halloween is also a Two-Face origin story that sees him promoted to Gotham City DA near the start of the story and, well, somewhere else by its conclusion. In lieu of Harvey, Sarsgaard plays Gil Colson, an original character for the film. Curiously, before Sarsgaard’s role was confirmed, some suggested he might be playing Harvey Dent, while yet others noted the character s name bares a resemblance to that of a corrupt Gotham Police officer who helped Two-Face in an episode of Batman: The Animated Series. For the moment, we’re inclined to believe Sarsgaard is, in fact, playing a wholly new character with no ties to Gotham’s most famous lawyer.This suspicion also extends to Lawson’s Bella Reál, another new character said to be running for mayor in the film. As with DA Colson, we’re willing to accept this as the truth until presented with evidence that she is really Barbara Gordon or Poison Ivy.Making these obscure ties less likely, though, is the trailer released during the 2021 edition of DC FanDome. Based on the story hooks teased in the newer preview, the mystery plaguing the Batman is engineered solely by the Riddler, making him the key villain in a Batman film for the first time since 1995’s Batman Forever., in which he was portrayed by Jim Carrey. Granted, he shared his murderous plot in that film with Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones). Nevertheless, it seems more likely The Batman will take thematic ideas from The Long Halloween and leave most of its plot within its pages.The Look Of The Batman(Photo by @mattreevesLA)As with Joker, Warner Bros. made the choice to debut The Batman’s key costume in a short video before any paparazzi had a chance to shoots pictures of it on location. Seen through darkness and red light, the suit seems to employ a more bare-bones, off-the-shelf aesthetic. The body armor continues Batman ‘89’s basic design choice, but a cowl made of fabric sets it apart from all other cinematic Batmen. Some have also speculated the bat symbol is made of the gun Joe Chill used to kill the Waynes. It’s all pretty interesting even if the video makes it look a little too much like Daredevil’s costume. Subsequent set pics also offered a better look at the cowl, which may be inspired by Silver Age comic book artists like Dick Sprang and Carmine Infantino.At DC FanDome 2020, Reeves said that the fact this is only year two of Batman s career heavily influenced the design of the costume: Wayne built it himself, he s making adjustments, you can see the gashes from his scuffles on the suit.In March of 2020, Reeves unveiled the first look at the Batmobile. Eschewing the more outlandish design conventions established in Batman ’89, this car is, in fact, a muscle car with some obvious modifications. Long-time readers of Batman comics may even recognize the broad strokes of the design as the one Batman used through most of the 1980s and into the 1990s. TM & © DC Comics)Despite all the tell-tale markings of a reboot, The Batman’s place in the loose continuity of Warner Bros s DC film slate is still up for debate. During the early phases of development, Reeves suggested it could take place out of continuity like Joker, but quickly backpedaled to say it will have some ties and maybe even a cameo or two. At the same time, recasting Jim Gordon, who was played by J.K. Simmons in Justice League, with Wright also suggests the film is in a world all its own. But then again, the DC Universe is a place where world-changing events create convenient retcons. Pattinson could simply replace Affleck’s Batman in the new DC film reality where Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) co-exists with Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and the Suicide Squad of 2021. Is all depends on whether or not Reeves would be interested in utilizing any of those ideas or, indeed, if Pattinson would want to bring his Batman to play with the other DC film heroes.The film will be released at the beginning of a full roster for the DC film universe, which includes The Flash, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and Black Adam. We wouldn’t put it past Warner Bros. to try to connect them all to The Batman, but we won’t be disappointed if they remain separate. It has become a hallmark of Black cinema, and impacted the industry by blending romance and sports in a new way. Since then, she has worked on projects in other genres because she refuses to be pigeonholed – both in TV and film. (Though she did return to romance, triumphantly, in the acclaimed drama Beyond the Lights.)Her latest film, the big-budget adaptation of Greg Rucka s graphic novel, The Old Guard, was perhaps her biggest departure yet. Starring Charlize Theron, Kiki Layne, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and more, the action flick hit Netflix last year after a planned theatrical release was scuttled by the COVID-19 pandemic. Action is a genre that few women get the opportunity to tackle, and there are even fewer Black women at the helm of big-budget action features. Prince-Bythewood may have pushed the door open a little further: The Old Guard was a huge success for the streaming service, with 72 million views in the first month of release and talk of a sequel. I love the collective theater experience of sitting with a group of people I don’t know, yet we all laugh/cry at the same thing. I love sitting in the theater when those opening credits come up. Especially when it s a movie that I’ve done and it s an exciting moment we all have to miss right now.What was the first film that made you really want to become a director?Prince-Bythewood: It s interesting because I didn t have that epiphany watching a movie. I had that epiphany that I was a director working on a movie. I was working on a student film at UCLA. I was on set and looked around then it hit me in that moment: you re a director. From then on, I worked on improving the craft and watching great films, which is the benefit of film school. You get to see so many movies that you normally wouldn t be able to. As time moved forward, I became more and more enamored with the craft and the power of filmmaking.Being on set, what were some of the challenges you remember having when shooting your first feature Love Basketball?Prince-Bythewood: While in school, you’re given room to fail, but for Love Basketball, that was my first shot. I worked on the script for so long and fought hard to make it. I was in a constant state of anxiety that I couldn t fail. It was the fear of: If I blow this, I’ll blow my entire career. Working on the film, the crew developed a sense of family, and everyone there wanted me to win, which helped fuel me to see it through to the end.Gina Prince-Bythewood and Sanaa Lathan while making Love Basketball. (Photo by © New Line Cinema)When you talk about that collective anxiety about failure, where does that stem from for you? Is it like a collective thing of being a woman, and being a woman of color? Was it being new in the industry? All of the above?Prince-Bythewood: It’s history. Women, Black folks, and people of color don t have the luxury of failure in this industry. It is very hard to get a second film, and a third film. Suddenly, you look around and you don t see anybody that looks like you – and I learned this pretty early on in my career.Are there any particular women filmmakers that you admire?Prince-Bythewood: Well, there is Kathryn Bigelow, and Euzhan Palcy – she is someone who looks like me, and is working with people like Marlon Brando. Then there is Kasi Lemmons who directed Eve s Bayou. It’s a film I respect immensely and was so different from anything that had come out before it. When Eve s Bayou came out, it was on such another level. The craft, the storytelling, the performances inspired me. The two sisters and their story, the performance that she got from Journee Smollett and Meagan Good, that movie stayed with me. I thought it was such an incredible debut from Kasi. I’ll never forget when I met Kasi before directing Love Basketball, and she was so giving of her time, support, and encouragement.Adepero Oduye in Dee Rees Pariah. I get excited, not only by their work and their talent, but the fight. I know what it takes to get a film made, and for them to have the grit to get it done is impressive. There is Dee Rees, her film Pariah blew me away. I loved Tina Mabry’s film Mississippi Damned; Little Woods by Nia DaCosta, and looking forward to her next film Candyman; and Channing Godfrey Peoples, who impressed me with Miss Juneteenth.Miss Juneteenth is such a great film.Prince-Bythewood: The movie took me into a world that I had no idea existed. There are a couple of scenes in there that are devastating to watch in the best way. Peoples did phenomenal world-building, which brought me into this small Texas community and taught me something. I cared about Turquoise (Nicole Beharie) and her daughter Kai (Alexis Chikaeze). She wants a better life for them both, and will do what it takes to change her circumstance. I just think Peoples created something special.I hear you really enjoyed Mati Diop’s first feature film, Atlantics, as well. I saw that one at Cannes in 2019.Prince-Bythewood: There was a lot of buzz about it, and I finally got a screener to watch it. I’m glad I didn’t know much about the film because it was exciting to experience that way. It s a quiet, beautiful movie, and I was just so invested in the love story. It’s beautiful, surprising, and heartbreaking.Radha Blank in The Forty-Year-Old Version. (Photo by © Netflix)And one of your favorites of last year is The Forty-Year-Old Version, which is written and directed by Radha Blank.Prince-Bythewood: Blank created something with all the elements: There’s drama, comedy, and an honest depiction of one woman s life who works in the creative arts. She has a fresh voice and clear vision that’s dope, dynamic, and bold. And shooting in black-and-white? A brilliant touch. I also loved the music and how it helps tell the story. It’s the best kind of humor because it comes from a place of truth.Your portfolio is super diversified. Like you got action, drama, romance. Do you like to do it all? Do you want to experiment with horror next? What s coming?Prince-Bythewood: I love every genre except for horror and westerns. I can t even tell you why. That s not to say I can t recognize a great western or horror film, but it s not my thing. Personally, I crave to do another love story. That is my favorite genre. However, I certainly want to see women, particularly Black women, creating in every genre. The next thing I am working on is The Woman King with Viola Davis. It s a historical epic. (Photo by Amy Spinks / © Netflix)Do you think, since you directed Love Basketball, that the industry has changed for women filmmakers?Prince-Bythewood: It s interesting you asked that, because I came across an interview I did 21 years ago during the press tour for Love Basketball, and I talked about my hopes for the future, and the fact that we re still having those conversations 21 years later is wild to me. When I shot The Old Guard I thought to myself that few women get the opportunity to do big tent-pole and action films. When I was in film school we had Kathryn Bigelow. She was the only woman I knew doing big-budget movies.This past year, seven of us – and the majority of us, women of color – got the opportunity to do the high title films. However, you can’t get too excited though because you see the actual numbers and it s like, Oh my God, how is this still happening? How are we at 12% of anything?! But it’s important to remember there are so many great films by a fantastic group of women that are in the awards conversation this year and it s long overdue.Kathryn Bigelow on the set of Point Break in 1991. Paint a picture of how that would work if you had it your way.Prince-Bythewood: More Black women in the director s chair. I had this conversation with Regina King for another publication and we talked about that, what we bring as Black women to our storytelling. Hollywood needs to understand that we all bring something different, that we are not a monolith. We don t all share the same experiences, so we need women who are bringing different things, in different genres to the table. My life experiences are what s important to me and a large part of my work. Things are wide open, and there are so many stories and different perspectives to share. King of the Crop: Shazam! Could be the Ant-Man of the DCEU(Photo by @ Warner Bros. Pictures)DC’s Shazam! led the box office with .45 million this weekend, on top of the .3 million it earned in early preview screenings. That was higher than projections. Even though that is the lowest opening in the DC Extended Universe, knocking the film for that fact would be like giving Ant-Man a hard time for not living up to the numbers of Captain America or Iron Man. Shazam! is a different beast than the mostly darker offerings from the DCEU, something that critics appear to dig. Shazam! has scored a 91% on the Tomatometer, just shy of the 92% of Wonder Woman. That is also higher than two of the Christopher Nolan Batman films – Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises – which are a universe apart from the current DC crop.Shazam! now currently owns the ninth-best opening weekend ever in April; that will be knocked back to 10th on April 26 when Avengers: Endgame opens. Among the 10 films that had the biggest ever April openings, the low bar for ultimate totals has been set by Fast and Furious (5 million) and 2010’s Clash of the Titans (3.2 million). The two best multiples among April’s top 10 were earned by A Quiet Place (3.74 times its opening weekend) and 2016’s The Jungle Book (3.52). Their Tomatometer scores were both 95%. Audience word-of-mouth looks to be solid for Shazam!, which bodes well for its future. The R-rated Hellboy is unlikely to eat into the DC hit s core audience, and if it can maintain a drop less than 45% it should be on track to earn at least 2 million, and potentially out-earn the original Ant-Man’s 0 million.Rotten Returns: Best Of Enemies Struggles to Find Allies (Photo by @ STX)The Best of Enemies opened with .5 million from 1,705 theaters, representing STX Entertainment s seventh-lowest opening per-theater-average. Critics were mixed on the the movie – it has a 52% Tomatometer score – and audiences didn t show up in impressive numbers. STX had a better month back in January with their Weinstein Co. pickup, The Upside, which remains one of the five highest-grossing films of the year with 7 million. That was the second-best tally (behind Bad Moms) for the studio in its nearly four-year history.The Rest of the Top 10 and Beyond: Stephen King Continues to Draw Crowds, but Can Sematary Match the Original?(Photo by Paramount Pictures)A smart bit of counter-programming from Paramount Pictures saw the newest take on Stephen King s Pet Sematary land in second place with million, despite a less than stellar response from critics. The movie received glowing reviews after its premiere at the South By Southwest Film Festival, but is now just barely Fresh with 61% on the Tomatometer. That is better than the reviews for Mary Lambert’s 1989 verion of Pet Sematary (48% with 31 reviews), but without strong word-of-mouth there may now be some doubt that the new movie can reach the .4 million that the original film made 30 years ago. (That is about 7 million in today’s dollars.)There seems little hope that directors Kevin Kölsch Dennis Widmyer’s version can match those inflation numbers off of a million weekend. Among eight horror films that have opened between million and million, only The Visit and 2005’s The Amityville Horror managed to pass million. (Each actually made .2 million.) Another two films – the 2013 s Evil Dead and 2015 s Poltergeist – appear to be more in line with audience response and dropped a respective 63.2% and 64.4% in their second weekends. Jordan Peele’s Us is now ahead of 2018’s Halloween after 17 days, with 2.3 million vs. the latter film s 0.2 million total. That’s the second-highest ever for a horror film. It also bested Halloween’s third weekend (.8 million to .8 million). Pet Sematary took some viewers away from Us this weekend but more people will still be talking about Us next week as it continues to forge a path towards 0 million. Its international total is 6.5 million.One film not headed to 0 million – at least not on the domestic front – is Tim Burton’s Dumbo. It is the 13th film from Disney released in over 3,000 theaters to drop 60% or more in its second weekend. With million after 10 days that puts Dumbo behind 1999’s Tarzan, Lilo Stitch, and Wild Hogs on the Disney charts. The film has made an additional 7.5 million internationally for a total of 3 million to date. It is going to need more than half-a-billion to break even.Good thing that Captain Marvel’s numbers are still looking super. Its 4 million domestic take is the 19th highest gross ever after 31 days of release. And the .6 million it earned this weekend is the 21st best fifth weekend ever. It is now the 37th film to cross the billion mark globally (and the seventh Marvel Cinematic Universe film to do so) and it continues to climb both of those charts. This weekend it also become the 30th highest-grossing film ever.This Time Last Year: A Quiet Place Began Its Record-Breaking Run(Photo by Jonny Cournoyer/Paramount)John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place opened to .2 million, beginning its run towards becoming one of the biggest horror films of all time. The Universal comedy Blockers came in third with .5 million and the Ted Kennedy drama Chappaquiddick opened in seventh with .7 million. Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One was just two days away from passing 0 million domestically. That movie s .6 million second weekend helped the top 10 films gross a total of 0.86 million with an average Tomatometer score of 60.9%. Laika Animation is back with its latest, Missing Link, and Aviron releases the adaptation of young adult novel, After. Of course Halloween is my favorite holiday,” The Walking Dead and Shudder’s Creepshow series executive producer told Rotten Tomatoes. “I know that there s going to be a bunch of zombie heads on spikes in my front yard for sure. The zombie heads are easy. The spikes are harder for me, because now I have to make them. But I got a bunch of zombie heads that I want to line up along the street outside of my house.”Trick-or-treaters, be on the lookout, because as the co-founder of the Oscar and Emmy-winning KNB EFX Group special effects studio, Nicotero’s lawn decorations of horror will obviously top anything you can buy at Target. In addition to the more than 400 TV and movie projects he and KNB have worked on since they formed in 1988, Nicotero’s handiwork is an integral part of the look of The Walking Dead, which he has been a part of since the show premiered on Halloween 2010.In honor of the series’ 10th anniversary, we talked to Nicotero about how he was actually part of the series before it became a series thanks to his friendship with Frank Darabont, why he thinks the show’s Western vibes are a big reason it propelled zombies into the mainstream, and how the upcoming spin-off with Carol (Melissa McBride) and Daryl (played by his good friend and Nic Norman’s restaurant partner Norman Reedus) has been building since season 2.Nicotero also talks about the cast and crew’s famously close relationships (including the only person he told about how nervous he was to direct his first episode), how TWD and Creepshow are dealing with filming during the pandemic, and the very cool zombie idea he’d like to try out before The Walking Dead wraps after season 11.(Photo by Mark Hill/AMC)Kim Potts for Rotten Tomatoes: How are you doing?Greg Nicotero: I m really good. We re filming away on Creepshow, and it s been super fun, surprisingly. I was a little concerned about all of the crazy COVID procedures making it more tedious and less fun, but it s been a blast. The actors have been great, and the crew has been great. We re having a really good time, so it feels great to be back at it again. You get to set, and you ve got your mask on and your face shield, but when you re in it, you forget about all that stuff, and you get a chance to focus on what you love doing.You re also working on the additional Walking Dead season 10 episode that will air next year?Nicotero: Yeah. The challenge is sort of getting out of one bubble and getting myself into another bubble, then getting tested, then doing set work, and then tested again, because you can t go from one set to the other without getting tested and put into another bubble. We probably started prepping Walking Dead stuff back in July, just sort of making adjustments in what we were doing for the show to allow for accelerated makeup times and easier application and all kinds of scenarios. I was working on Walking Dead July, August, and September, and then in September we started shooting Creepshow again. It s been kind of busy.Has it forced you to make any storyline changes in either show?Nicotero: The Walking Dead stuff is really intended to be these kind of episodes that are a little more production-friendly … because you re dipping your toes in the water a little bit. With Creepshow, we re primarily a stage show, so we don t have to go out into the world very often, and that allows us to be a little bit more self-contained. Fortunately, not a lot of people kiss in either show, so we’re not worrying too much about somebody kissing someone. It s definitely a change in the way that we are accustomed to doing things, but so far, so good.Are you directing any of the six remaining season 10 episodes?Nicotero: No. Originally, (TWD showrunner) Angela (Kang) had called and asked me if I wanted to and, unfortunately, because of when the pandemic hit and everything shut down, Creepshow was set to start shooting, and we had prepped the first two episodes. I think in my head originally, I was like, “Well, I can shoot Creepshow and then run over and do Walking Dead,” and then I thought, “That s insane. I would literally die.” Until January, I m all the way up to my eyeballs in Creepshow.(Photo by AMC)Halloween this year marks the 10th anniversary of The Walking Dead. Does it feel to you like it s been a decade? I always think of the show as all of you making an hour-long movie, for TV, every week.Nicotero: Yeah, it feels like it s been 100 years. Honestly, time has a very different meaning when you re on a show of this magnitude for this duration, because there are some episodes I remember like they were yesterday. There are other episodes that I m like, “I don t even remember that,” just because we ve done so many episodes. Even when I go to the studio, and I ll stand on the backlot and be like, “This is where the prison was, and then that s where the Heaps were, and then, oh, this is the scene where they thought that Carol was dead and they put a grave in the prison field …” There are numerous beautiful moments of the show, and some of them get lost in the fact that we ve been on for such a long time, and I kind of forget some of them.I just recently went back and rewatched Game of Thrones with my son, Deven, and there was so much stuff that I was able to appreciate about the show going back and seeing it after a little bit of time. I m looking forward to doing that with Walking Dead, going back to the beginning and really sort of looking at what the DNA of the show was then and the great scenes that we crafted and the great moments with Chandler (Riggs) and with Emily (Kinney). There are so many people that you start going back and thinking about what amazing work they did. God bless Scott Wilson, because I had some of the greatest moments of my career with Scott. I ll be forever grateful that I got a chance to be a part of his life.I don t think I’ve ever talked to you about this: how did your involvement with the show begin? Nicotero: Frank (Darabont) is one of my best friends, still to this day, and probably a year before the show was ever put into production, he had given me the script and was like, “Okay, we re going to do The Walking Dead.” The irony behind all of this was I remember buying the first issue of the comic book when I was working with Robert Rodriguez in Austin, Texas. There was a great comic book shop there, and I bought the first issue. Frank and I had always talked about the idea of wanting to do a zombie project, because he loved Night of the Living Dead. His No. 1 criteria was, it s got to be the right stories. It really needs to be about survival and what people do, what they become in order to survive.I remember one night specifically, one dinner, where we were talking about it. I don t think we ever thought about it as a TV show, because this was years before Walking Dead even happened. At that point, zombie television wasn t even a thing. No one would have ever imagined doing a TV show with zombies in it. We were talking about a movie. Then a couple of years later he sent the script over and was like, “Hey, man, this is what we re going to do.” We had designed a couple of zombie busts that he took to his meetings to help sell the show, because one of the big questions that every network asked was, “Well, how are you going to do the zombies? No one s ever done anything like this on television before.” (Frank) was like, “Oh, it s easy. I got this guy, Greg Nicotero, and he makes zombie busts, and this is what the zombies are going to look like.”(Photo by Scott Garfield/AMC)There are so few of you left from the beginning, but you ve been there even before it was even a show.Nicotero: I remember talking about the opening scene with Frank, with a little girl at the gas station, and I said, “You know, Frank, the Dawn of the Dead remake had a very similar sequence where there s a little girl zombie at the beginning,” and he was like, “Yeah, I don t care about that. It doesn t matter. This is going to be our show.”I would have never imagined that the mainstream would have sort of caught up to everything that I have loved since I was a kid, which is zombie movies. Before The Walking Dead, zombies were a very, very niche sort of sub-genre that appealed to a specific group of people. I think what Frank was able to do was really break the mold and show that The Walking Dead really is a Western. Andy (Lincoln) always, always talked about that a lot; his inspiration for Rick Grimes was Clint Eastwood and The Outlaw Josie Wales. That was something that was very important, because a lot of the actors, when we did season 1, they hadn t seen a lot of zombie stuff. They hadn t seen Night of the Living Dead. They hadn t seen Dawn of the Dead. Even though that was a lot of the inspiration for the show, they were approaching it like Frank, from sort of a dramatic survival standpoint.I have to say that the cast that we put together for season 1, with Sarah Callies and Steven Yeun and Jon Bernthal and Laurie Holden and Jeff DeMunn … what a cast. I mean, the cast was absolutely astonishing and that s where Frank always excels, his ensemble casting. He did it in The Green Mile. He did it in Shawshank (Redemption). He did it in The Mist. And, of course, there are Norman (Reedus) and Melissa (McBride), who have been on the show since day one.Do you think it s that focus on those aspects, those dramatic aspects and the kind of survival, the universal, human themes is what really helped the show cross over to the mainstream?Nicotero: Absolutely. Absolutely, because a lot of times in zombie movies, prior to The Walking Dead, the gore was the big element, the horror was the big element, and I think there were a lot of instances where people might have been turned off by the gore. Even when you talk to people that watch The Walking Dead, they had this preconceived notion about it until they watched it, and when they experienced it through the eyes of Rick Grimes, who is waking up in the hospital, and he s learning about what the world is, the first thing people would say is, “It s not a show about zombies.” I m like, “No, it s a show about survival, and it s a show about what people are willing to do in a situation like that.” Of course the zombies are a big part of it, and I m very proud of the contribution that I ve made to the show and that my team has made to the show, but a lot of the drive for the show has been about those specific character moments where the audience can identify with Maggie or Glenn or Hershel and put themselves in those characters positions and imagine what they would or would not have been able to do.(Photo by Gene Page/AMC)Do you have a favorite episode or storyline? You ve been involved in so many of the great ones, but can you choose just one?Nicotero: I would probably say one of my favorite episodes is the episode where Merle fights The Governor and Merle dies [“This Sorrowful Life”]. The moment where Norman just literally poured his soul out when he saw Merle as a walker. I ll never forget filming that. I ll never forget people calling me and saying, “How the fuck did you make me cry in a show like this?” I ve had so many amazing moments working with Norman and working with Melissa. I mean, having filmed Andy s last episode, and the number of people that I ve had to kill on the show, that’s never fun.I don t know if I could pick just one episode. I think the episode where the walkers invade Alexandria [“Start to Finish”], and that was like our Night of Living Dead homage. I would probably go back and watch episodes and not even remember like, “Oh, I shot that episode. That s right,” because we’ve had so many, so many moments. Negan s introduction [“Last Day on Earth”, which was certainly controversial, but I m tremendously proud of what we did, and Jeffrey (Dean Morgan s) performance and shooting 12 pages of dialogue in two nights is, it s a little bonkers in the TV schedule. So yeah, I just don t know if I could pick one.Has the show ever made you cry?Nicotero: I think there have been characters that died (that have made me cry). I think the moment with Jeffrey DeMunn, that was the first episode I had ever directed [“Judge, Jury, Executioner”], and, yeah, I got emotional when I shot it and when I watched the first cut. Chandler was a little boy. I remember Chandler running down through the field and shooting his reaction to seeing Jeff on the ground with his stomach torn open and blood bubbling out of it, and just how hysterical everybody got. To see the fear in Jeffrey s eyes when Norman walked over with the gun and said, “I m sorry, brother, it was intense.That episode was just … I was so terrified, because it was the first hour of television that I had ever directed, and I had my little graphs and my little charts of where the camera would go. I think probably Andy was the only person that I had shared with him like, “I m scared sh less here,” but I trusted my instincts, I trusted my camera department, and I trusted my actors. If you look at the episodes in season 2, 3, and 3, those episodes are so dense. There s so much story that we re telling, and it just propelled us. If you watch that episode, which was written by Angela, there s so much. You re telling an entire season s worth of story in that one episode.That s what I mean. They were like movies every week.Nicotero: Oh, without a doubt. There s not one moment where there s a frame of film that doesn t serve something, that doesn t serve a character, a story point, the propulsion of the show as it s moving forward. I ve rewatched that episode recently, and it s just crazy what we did. I think we shot that in seven days maybe.(Photo by Gene Page/AMC)You are responsible for starting The Walking Dead Zombie School, to train the zombie actors on the show. How has that evolved through the seasons? I m guessing that just from watching the show, people are coming to you a little more prepared at this point.Nicotero: Definitely. In fact, I don t think we ve done Zombie School in two years, because at this point, we have our troupe of zombie performers and actors, and I think the people that we love, we bring them back over and over again. At the beginning, we wanted to make sure that we were maintaining the aesthetic of what we wanted for the zombies, but also, they had to be able to perform with the actors. They have to be able to die well, they had to be able to be convincing as zombies. What you don t want to do is spend an entire hour or two fine tuning background zombie performances that would then be taking away from shooting the rest of the scene, so it was always very important that the zombies were well directed in terms of their performance and what was expected of them. Every season, I would say we d probably end up with like 20 people that were just standout performers, and a lot of them initially came from a place in Georgia called Netherworld, which is a haunted house attraction that would open in September/October. A lot of those people that had been working at that attraction ended up being some of our best zombie performers.The Walking Dead cast and crew have been known to be very close, even though there are a lot of changes with all the character deaths. How have you maintained that?Nicotero: Well, listen, the dynamic of the cast changes as certain actors leave and other actors come in, so it evolves. It s a very organic thing. I think one of the unique things about any show that has a tightknit family is when you re in the trenches with them, you re sharing something that you can t share with anybody else. That was something I learned working with Quentin Tarantino. When we were doing Inglourious Basterds, he had looked at me one day and said, “You know, there s nobody else I would ever want to be in the trenches with,” and that really stuck with me a lot, because I realized that it s a shared experience, and I have a bond with this crew and these actors that no one can ever take away from me and no one can replace. I still keep in touch with most of the actors from the show, even if it s once a month, just a quick text saying, “Hey, how s it going?” I talk to Sonequa (Martin-Green) a lot. I talk to (Michael) Cudlitz a lot. I talk to Alanna (Masterson) a lot. Of course, on the show, Norman and Jeffrey and Christian (Serratos)  and Lauren (Cohan). Even during the pandemic, I would just find myself calling Khary (Payton) to just see how he is doing. or I would call Seth (Gilliam).When you ve been in these intense situations with these people for so long, they just become part of your life. I m grateful, forever grateful, for that and for the friendships that I have. I talked to Jeffrey DeMunn not long ago. It s like that never goes away. When you work on a movie, that goes for six months or eight months, then it s gone, and you move on. When you re doing serialized television, you come back year after year, and you come back with the same people. You watch their children grow up, and you watch them get married or divorced or whatever happens, but you end up being a part of that whole scenario. It s fun for me to look at Andy s kids and Jeffrey (Dean Morgan) s kids. Jeffrey s son is really into special effects makeup, so I would send him little makeup kits and little zombie wounds and things. I send videos to Andy from set of the creatures from Creepshow so that he can show it to his kids, because they re sort of now at that age where they re kind of fascinated with the monster aspect of it.(Photo by AMC)You mentioned Carol and Daryl, and how Norman and Melissa are the other people still with the show who have been there from the beginning. Their characters, separately and together, are so beloved that they’re going to be their own spinoff. Since you’ve witnessed it all, is that relationship something that developed organically? Nicotero: With Daryl, that was a creation of Frank Darabont, and I remember specifically when we were casting for the show, Frank had called me one day and said, “Hey, I m thinking about this guy Norman Reedus to play Daryl, and I know that you had worked with him on Masters of Horror. What did you think of him?”  I gave him a huge thumbs up, but I said, “Listen, let s reach out to the director and get a review from John Carpenter.” John couldn t say enough good things about Norman. The next thing I knew, I was sitting in the van dressed up as a zombie for (“Tell It to the Frogs”), and Norman s sitting in the chair next to me. I didn t even realize that the deal had gone through. He didn t recognize me because I was dressed up as a zombie. I had my zombie teeth in, and I was trying to talk to him. Ironically enough, I am the first zombie that Daryl kills in the series.I think the way that season 2 was crafted and the way that Daryl s character evolved into somebody who was not going to give up looking for Carol’s daughter, Sophia, that s really where that bond began, because of Daryl s undying commitment to find Sophia. Between Melissa s brilliant performance as Carol and Norman, they just fell together so perfectly that you couldn t have planned it. It just worked amazingly well and kept growing from there.
The Black Hole (1979) 38% (Photo by © Buena Vista courtesy Everett Collection)The Black Hole is one of the forgotten sci-fi films that came in the wake of the original Star Wars, only this was more of a disaster and horror film with a Dante’s Inferno vibe than a traditional Disney film – and it was the studio s first movie released with a PG rating. It features then-cutting-edge special effects, a star-studded cast (including Robert Forster and Anthony Perkins), and a dark story that isn’t common in Disney movies anymore. David Cornelius wrote for eFilmCritic that it ranks among the very best films to come from the post-Star Wars sci-fi boom. The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (1969) 50%(Photo by Walt Disney Productions)Long before he played iconic action heroes in the 1980s, young Kurt Russel was the star of a bizarre series of movies for Disney. These movies followed his character, affable college student Dexter Riley, in a series of ridiculous adventures. The first of them was The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, in which Dexter accidentally becomes a human computer after being electrocuted. What does he do with this power? Well, help his quiz team reach the nationals while he unwittingly helps bust a gambling ring, of course! It’s a funny comedy carried by Russell’s innate charisma, which was enough to make him return for two sequels that saw Dexter fall victim to further freak accidents.FUZZBUCKET (1986)(Photo by Samuel Goldwyn Company)Remember when kids movies were the stuff of nightmares? Fuzzbucket remembers. Fuzzbucket is clearly a blatant attempt to capitalize on the success of E.T. and ALF, only without the cutesy friendship of the Spielberg movie or the weird sarcasm of the puppet-powered sitcom. Visually, Fuzzbucket is something of an abomination, but he still becomes best friends with a young boy named Michael. The twist? He can turn invisible, so for most of the movie, the characters think Michael is talking to an imaginary friend. Fuzzbucket is a bizarre, yet funny, and at times even heartfelt movie that will still haunt your nightmares.Gus (1976)  Back in the 1970s, Disney was all about Don Knotts playing oddball characters in comedies, but no movie of his had a premise as off kilter as Gus. Before the endless Air Bud movies put a golden retriever at the center of every sport imaginable, this film made a mule the best football player around, even taking his team to the Super Bowl. With an inspiring message and a cast that manages to play the whole thing straight, this is a Disney movie you have to see to believe. Writing for Common Sense Media, Randy White declared that “kids will get a kick out of this mule tale.”Halloweentown (1998) 80% (Photo by © Disney Channel courtesy Everett Collection)Before Harry Potter sent readers to a school of witchcraft and wizardry, a Disney Channel movie sent us to Halloweentown, a surreal fantasy that introduced many kids to the wonders of horror and practical monster effects. The story follows a 13-year-old girl who discovers she comes from a family of witches, and who has to fight an evil that threatens to destroy the titular town, where all sorts of monsters live in harmony. Variety critic Laura Fries wrote, “What separates this original pic from the usual Halloween fare is that it captures the spirit of a holiday designed for kids. It s sweet and fun, but too much could definitely give you a stomach ache.” The movie not only has a great kid-friendly horror atmosphere, but it also stars the late, great Debbie Reynolds as an inspirational witch, and there are three sequels all on Disney+ to boot.The Luck of the Irish (2001)  (Photo by © Hal Roach Studios courtesy Everett Collection)The Disney Channel was full of genre movies with crazy concepts. One of the best one is about a junior high basketball star named Kyle who happens to be extremely lucky in life. When he tries to look into where his family comes from for Heritage Day, he discovers that he has roots in Ireland, and also that he is slowly turning into a leprechaun because someone stole his lucky gold coin. What comes next is a wacky, funny, and heartwarming story of the importance of diversity and how history shapes who we are.Bride of Boogedy (1987) 20% (Photo by Disney+)A novelty salesman moves his family to a town called Lucifer Falls (red flag, anyone?) and discovers that their new home is haunted. This made-for-TV movie was a rare horror film made by Disney that served as a gateway horror for many kids, and featured one of the ugliest and scariest ghosts ever to appear in a family-friendly film. Come for the horror, stay for Mimi Kennedy’s fantastic performance as the mother who tries to invite a ghost in for coffee. As critic Rachel Wagner of Rachel’s Reviews said, “I think you ll have a really good time with your family watching Mr. Boogedy.”Phantom of the Megaplex (2000)  (Photo by Disney Channel Productions)What if Phantom of the Opera was remade for kids and set in a movie theater? The Phantom of the Megaplex, another Disney Channel original movie, has something for everyone. Horror fans will enjoy the nods to the classic Universal movies, kids will laugh at the jokes and the zany characters, movie and TV fans will appreciate the addition of Mickey Rooney to the cast, and movie theater employees new and old will instantly connect to the real horrors that the protagonists go through. Cinema Crazed’s Felix Vasquex Jr. wrote that it s “an unusual but entertaining DCOM that really does have its heart in the right place.”The Shaggy D.A. (1976) 50% Made 17 years after the original The Shaggy Dog, this sequel features a lawyer who suddenly transforms into a dog while on the campaign trail for District Attorney. Honestly, its tagline “The only candidate with a law degree and a pedigree” should be enough to pique your interest, but the ridiculous dog costume and Dean Jones’s over the top performance are likely to seal the deal. 7 Pictures’ Kevin Carr wrote, “It s a goofy story, and it s far from a brilliant movie, but The Shaggy D.A. is a fun romp for a family to watch.”That Darn Cat! (1965) 94% Have you ever tried catching bank robbers with nothing but a Siamese cat as your lead? Welcome to That Darn Cat!, which follows the misadventures of two FBI agents tasked with following the only witness to a hostage situation – a cat – to try and locate the thieves hideout. Come for the ridiculous premise, stay for one fantastic four-legged actor and a Sherman Brothers-written title song. Time Out critic Trevor Johnston wrote, “The two legged cast play second string to the marvellous moggie.”The Thirteenth Year (1999)  (Photo by Disney Enterprises, Inc.)After Splash got nominated for an Oscar and The Little Mermaid jumpstarted the Disney animated renaissance, Disney decided to continue its mermaid tradition, only cheaper and made for TV. The result was The Thirteenth Year, the story of a teenage boy who was abandoned by his birth mother – a mermaid – and was raised by human parents. When he hits puberty, he grows gills and becomes a great swimmer, but he also somehow inherits the ability to climb walls and control electricity. The Thirteenth Year is a charming coming-of-age story that also gets very close to being a Spider-Man movie.Like this? While that is an exciting prospect for actors looking to play nuance with surprising-but-realistic turns, it can wear on a viewer. Crime, drugs, adultery, violence – it can become a bit much. Especially this week. With the real world doing everything it can to exhaust us, we put together a list of television shows that serve to buoy you up. These are optimistic, bright, and fun shows – binge-able series that will leave you with a guilt-free sugar high.Superstore 93%NBC, 4 seasonsSuperstore is a great example of how a show can sneak in social commentary, channeling it through vibrant-yet-realistic characters who are – most importantly! – consistently funny. Storylines about the lack of paid maternity leave are balanced with defiling food-court cups on Instagram feeds. Mark McKinney (The Kids in the Hall) leads the team at chain store Cloud 9, which includes familiar faces such as America Ferrera (Ugly Betty) and Ben Feldman (Silicon Valley, Mad Men). But the show has also put actors on our radar who could well be the future of comedy, such as Lauren Ash, Kaliko Kauahi, and Nico Santos, who killed it this summer in Crazy Rich Asians as the fashion-designer cousin-to-the-groom, Oliver T’sien.Bob's Burgers 91%Fox, 9 seasonsH. Jon Benjamin is the voice of Bob Belcher, who just wants to bring burgers to his customers without a side of antics from his hilarious and easily-distracted family. Dan Mintz, Eugene Mirman, and Kristen Schaal play his kids (Tina, Gene, and Louise), and John Roberts plays his wife, Linda. Aside from some amazing burger-name puns (Three Beets to the Wind, Edward James Olive-most), you can count on this show’s storylines to always bring out the best in the characters, eventually. Who knew health code violations could be so fun?Schitt's Creek 93%POP, Netflix, 4 seasonsPrior to losing their fortune to the Internal Revenue Service, the Rose family wouldn’t have won any congeniality contests – unless they paid for the trophy. Their humanity was lost in a sea of wigs, priceless jewels, and enormous family portraits. In their disgrace, though, they are forced to move to the town they purchased as a joke, namely Schitt’s Creek. Together, living in the local run-down motel, they rediscover their humanity…but keep the wigs. The show – full of snappy one-liners, scenery-chewing performances, and big dollops of heart – is something of a family production in real life: It was co-created by and stars Eugene Levy and his son Dan, and co-stars Eugene’s daughter Sara and his longtime collaborator, Catherine O’Hara.The Good Place 97%NBC, 3 seasons (season 3 airing now)Weighty themes – Death! Morality! The afterlife! — are given a bubbly, bright-colored treatment in The Good Place, a comedy that will have you thinking almost as hard as you’re laughing. When the show kicks off, Kristen Bell’s Eleanor has died, but her work is far from over. Without revealing too much, since the plot’s weekly twists and turns are a major source of the show’s pleasures, we’ll say that the supporting cast — ranging from veterans like Ted Danson to new-to-us faces like Manny Jacinto and Jameela Jamil – is what makes the show a must-see event (and great for a binge). Not only will you be wrapped up in the journey of the characters as they navigate their new lives (deaths?), but you’ll get refresher courses on some of the great thinkers’ theories on morality. Fun and Freud? Pizza and Plato? Enjoy.Queer Eye 93%Netflix, 2 seasonsWherever there are people, there are makeovers to be done. This Netflix reboot of the popular 2000s series focuses on the vulnerability of the makeover experience as our Fab Five 2.0 barges into unsuspecting folks homes to whip them into shape. Bobby Berk is on interiors, Karamo Brown does culture, Tan France assists with fashion (and the French tuck!), Antoni Porowski focuses on food (mostly avocado), and Jonathan Van Ness imparts his grooming knowledge. The series sneaks up on you: You’ll be spending most of your time soaking up the tips, but by the time each episode wraps, it’s likely you’ll be shedding a tear or two. A makeover for the soul.GLOW 92%Netflix, 2 seasonsThis fictional account of the origin of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (G.L.O.W.) hits you hard with fists of feeling, yet still manages to feel campy and fun – like the wrestling league itself. Episodes focus on family, friendship, gender politics, performance, and what happens when you feel like you’ve reached a dead end. It’s a tribute to the cast that it is mostly such a feel-good time. Alison Brie (Community) and Marc Maron (Maron) head up this talented ensemble whose underdog journey will have you cheering for the next bodyslam, piledriver, and warm hug.Outlander 89%Starz, 4 seasons (season 4 airing now)Like your escapism with a heavy side of steam? This is definitely the hottest show on the list. Adapted from a popular book series of the same name, this Ronald D. Moore-led hit has it all: time travel, kilts, espionage, and passionate romance. Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe) is a nurse in 1945 who suddenly ends up in a very different 1743, right in the middle of the Jacobite risings, and right alongside a handsome Highland warrior (Sam Heughan, who once performed an actual citizen s arrest…true hero). Her skills as a nurse – and the advantage of 200 years of scientific advances – are endlessly helpful to the Scots, but her abrupt appearance and lack of family make her a target as well. If anyone can handle it, though, it’s Claire.black-ish 92%ABC, 5 seasons (season 5 airing now)This fresh single-camera sitcom shows that there remains plenty of ground to cover on the tried-and-true TV-comedy topics of family, relationships, heritage, and generally just being a person on this planet. Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross head up the Johnson family, shepherding their kids through the world as they navigate everything from racism and political debates to teenage romances and bullying. One of the strongest elements of the show is that everyone is genuinely fallible, and the issues that often throw them off balance are ripped-from-the-headlines real. You’re bound to absorb a lesson or two while you laugh. Spinoff series Grown-ish is worth a binge, too, if you run out of eps.Jane The Virgin 100%CW, 4 seasonsFew prime-time soaps have the heart and charm of Jane the Virgin. If the original premise seems like something out of a telenovela – virgin Jane is accidentally artificially inseminated during a routine gynecological checkup – that’s because it was: Jane is loosely based on Venezuelan show Juana la Virgen. The transition from South America to Miami works brilliantly, largely thanks to creative writing and a committed cast. Gina Rodriguez is a standout as Jane, the young Venezuelan-American woman who’s chasing her dreams and learning how to roll with life’s (really weird) punches.Broad City 99%Comedy Central, 4 seasonsThis web series-cum-Comedy Central hit has become the comedy of a generation for certain city-dwelling Millennials. As best friends in the big city, Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson are officially one of the finest comedic duos, serving New York realness with a hilarious brand of feminism, self-deprecation, and truth. And, whew, it s gonna be quite the evening – and not just for the glitz, glam, and speeches.The pandemic, with its shuffled release dates and changes to eligibility for various awards ceremonies, already made this year a different beast for the HFPA s night of nights, but a slew of controversies have also colored the 2021 Globes. First came criticism after the organization decided that Minari, the American film with mostly Korean dialogue, would compete in the foreign category; then came the noticeable snubbing of multiple projects featuring Black creatives and casts on nominations morning. And then, just a week out from the ceremony, the L.A.
