(Photo by FX)The 50 Best Spy TV Shows EverDeciding which series are worthy of inclusion on a list of the best spy shows and streaming series ever is a matter of mystery itself. With its propensity for disguises, double-crosses, and surveillance, FX’s Cold War–era drama The Americans, is certainly about spies. But the series — which has a 96% series-level Tomatometer score, every season of which is Certified Fresh (including one 100% CF season), and is regarded by critics as one of the greatest shows in this Golden Age of Television — is also about marriage, parenting, and history’s winning side’s ability to whitewash facts. Should it receive a lower ranking on our ultimate spy show list than a classic like CBS’s Mission: Impossible? Also of note: They both have catchy theme songs.Where should a complicated sci-fi caper like Starz’s Counterpart stand? The series, which returns for season 2 on December 9, finished off its first season with one of those rare, perfect 100% Certified Fresh Tomatometer scores. It stars J.K. Simmons as both a mild-mannered bureaucratic pencil pusher and his aggro alt-universe counterpart, who hunt dangerous reality-hopping spies. The espionage stories of John le Carré have also had televised adaptations. Le Carré s The Night Manager (featuring one of Britain’s top Toms) and, most recently, The Little Drummer Girl both aired on AMC, are Certified Fresh at 90% on the Tomatometer, and rank high on our spy series list.Spycraft can also be quite funny, as in Mel Brooks and Buck Henry’s beloved Get Smart, which ran on NBC and CBS in the late 60s, and the long-running animated FX comedy Archer, which has a 93% Tomatometer score. We considered more than Tomatometer scores to finalize our spy show ranking, however; we also looked at variables like how many seasons each series has, how each of those seasons scored, how many reviews determined those scores, and whether those seasons were Certified Fresh, We looked at other reputable media lists of top spy series to help gauge where to place some classic series without enough reviews to register a Tomatometer score, and then applied a dose of editorial discretion to break some ties and rank some titles based on their cultural resonance.Check out Rotten Tomatoes list of best spy shows ever before it self destructs in three … two … just kidding. Like the FBI’s most wanted list, we’ll keep updating this dossier as more information becomes available.亚博体彩APP投注平台ers. The pandemic matters. While we can probably expect another strongly-worded “I told you so” from the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) this week, the numbers do not lie. Streaming or not, since the end of June, when F9 opened, only two films have grossed more than 2.5 times its opening weekend: The Boss Baby: Family Business (3.42x), which was also streaming for free on Peacock, and The Forever Purge (3.47x), which was exclusively in theaters. Here is a breakdown of the rest.THEATER EXCLUSIVEF9 (2.43 / 7 weeks)Old (2.27 / 3 weeks)Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins (1.94 / 3 weeks)Escape Room: Tournament of Champions (2.51 / 4 weeks)The Green Knight (1.77 / 2 weeks)Stillwater (1.92 / 2 weeks)DISNEY PREMIER ACCESSBlack Widow (2.16 / 5 weeks)Jungle Cruise (1.86 / 2 weeks)HBO MAX (SINCE GODZILLA VS. KONG)Mortal Kombat (1.81)Those Who Wish Me Dead (2.59)The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2.70)In the Heights (2.58)Space Jam: A New Legacy (2.08 / 4 weeks)But let’s not let the HBO Max decision off the hook either. Repeat business seems to be at a stand still until we get a true all-clear on COVID and Delta, and streaming only doubles down on that. So the opening weekend is more crucial than ever before. The Suicide Squad is just the seventh film during this time to start with over million, joining HBO Max compatriots Godzilla vs. Kong and Space Jam: A New Legacy. The former stretched its legs through a still-wide open marketplace while vaccine hope was at its peak; the latter dropped like a stone and may end up with the worst multiple for a family film this year.We could just drop all the variables and statistics and know that in our hearts, Gunn’s film goes nowhere south of million in normal times. And that is as conservative as it gets. The top “R”-rated opening in August is still Straight Outta Compton, with .2 million, so it s hard to even suggest that a high-profile DC film whose almost universally-maligned “PG-13” effort is the highest opening weekend ever in August with 3.68 million wouldn t make  million or more. Not when both Deadpools opened to over 5 million, Joker to over million, and Logan with .4 million. The only thing we know for sure is that this year, in our current circumstances, The Suicide Squad will not be joining the 0 million club and the odds are very much in favor that nothing from the rest of Warner Brothers lineup for 2021 will be invited in either. The Top Ten And Beyond: Jungle Cruise Sailing Towards 0 Million Last week’s no. 1 film is showing some potential to eventually join the 0 million club. Jungle Cruise fell 55% to .7 million this weekend. In this environment that actually constitutes a victory given that it is the lowest drop for a no. 1 film in its second weekend since Spiral fell 47.5% from a meager start of .7 million. That puts Jungle’s 10-day toll at million, which is ahead of Godzilla vs. Kong’s .05 million at 10 days, though with that film’s Wednesday opening it only had four weekend days to accumulate that total compared to Jungle’s six. Nevertheless, it is still a better second weekend than GvK’s .88 million, so we’ll give Jungle Cruise a puncher’s chance of breaking that ceiling.M. Night Shyamalan’s Old fell back just a single spot for the third straight week. It is right in line with The Forever Purge’s third weekend of .1 million. Overall, it is still ahead of that film’s pace by almost million, so look for Old’s final tally to be in the range of million, just getting over Lady in the Water’s total and avoiding being the lowest-grossing film of Shyamalan’s post-Sixth Sense career. Black Widow dropped to fourth place with million, which is the third-best fifth weekend this year behind A Quiet Place Part II (.19 million) and F9 (.82 million). Still, it did pass F9 this week and now certainly has a lock to claim the crown of summer champion, not to mention fairly decent odds to compete for the highest-grossing film of the year, with possibly No Time to Die and Spider-Man: No Way Home as its biggest challengers.(Photo by © A24)Amongst last weekend’s adult entries, Stillwater dropped 45% to .86 million and stands total at million. It looks like Focus Features, which has put every one of its 13 films into theaters since Kajillionaire last September, is going to have its highest-grossing film of the pandemic – but just its second to pass million and one which is unlikely to hit million. The Green Knight is just A24’s third theatrical release during this time and their numbers have actually gone up. From Oscar nominee Minari (.1 million) to Zola (.1 million) and now to David Lowery’s film (the first in the company s history to start in third place), which has earned million so far.On The Vine: A Background Player and the Queen of SoulThings get a little more crowded in theaters next week. Delayed multiple times since last year, audiences can finally see Ryan Reynolds as a video game character trying to escape in Free Guy (which critics are digging). More folks are trying to rob Stephen Lang’s abusive blind guy in Don’t Breathe 2, and Jennifer Hudson takes on the role of Aretha Franklin in the biopic, Respect. All three films will be exclusive to theaters.Full List of Box Office Results: August 6-8, 2021

Earlier in the week, already low-tracking numbers for the new crop of films suggested that this weekend might be a bad example to use in considering how the current international health crisis was affecting movie-going. That was before American acting treasure Tom Hanks announced that he and his wife had tested positive for coronavirus, theaters began restricting attendance to 50 percent capacity, and a series of high-profile cancellations (A Quiet Place Part II, Mulan, F9), including one recurring cancellation (The New Mutants), resulted in no new wide releases for the next three weeks in theaters, some of which are taking the next step of closing down. All of that culminated in the lowest box office total since the 1990s. The industry will certainly place asterisks on the box office results for this trying period.King of the Crop: Onward Soldiers ThroughPixar has only seen two second-weekend drops of more than 60 percent in their history for Cars 2 (-60.3 percent) and The Good Dinosaur. Due to decreased theatrical capacities and social-distancing, their latest film dropped a massive 73 percent. Onward still led the weekend’s box office with .5 million, but it has quickly dropped behind The Good Dinosaur’s pace (.3 million second weekend and .8 million after 10 days) to what, inevitably, will be the lowest-grossing film in the company’s 25-year history. The numbers could drop even further next week, making Onward just the fourth March release to have grossed million in its first 10 days to not make it to 0 million. The others being 10,000 B.C., Battle: Los Angeles, and 2017’s Power Rangers.Rotten Returns: Bloodshot Wasn’t the Franchise-Starter Hoped ForVin Diesel’s franchise-starting success appears to be on the wane. As a headliner, Diesel’s average film opening is .13 million. Remove his Fast Furious franchise movies from that group, and the average goes down to .15 million. Take away the Riddick and xXx films, and it drops to .46 million. Now remove The Pacifier and add this weekend’s Bloodshot to the list of The Last Witch Hunter, Babylon A.D., and A Man Apart and it falls to just .15 million. A Man Apart — with the lowest production budget of those films at million — was never a franchise play, but its opening of .01 million was higher than any of the other films, including Bloodshot, whose .3 million start is the weakest ever for a wide-release Diesel vehicle. The health crisis certainly did him no favors, but the film was only tracking around a million opening before this week’s escalation. Neither number is good for the million production, which has grossed a total of .6 million worldwide so far.The Top 10 and Beyond: Faith-Based I Still Believe Is Best of New ReleasesLooking at the top 10 in terms of success, Bad Boys for Life is the year’s most successful film to date, garnering around million in profit so far after grossing over 7 million worldwide. The Invisible Man and its million budget grossed another million in its third weekend, bringing its total to .4 million domestic and over 2 million worldwide. It has the second-best profit of 2020 right now. In sixth place this week, but third place for 2020, is Sonic the Hedgehog, as it passed 6 million worldwide. Lionsgate’s faith-based release, I Still Believe, from directors Andrew and Jon Erwin, did the best of the new releases this week with .5 million. Unfortunately, its budget is reportedly around twice that of I Can Only Imagine’s million, making a shot at profit now more unfeasible. That film from the Erwin’s grossed an incredible .4 million and is the highest-grossing film in the history of Roadside Attractions.Autumn de Wilde’s 2020 version of Emma is doing OK with million in North America and another million overseas. Its  million total is better than Gwyneth Paltrow’s 1996 version fared (though its million was all made Stateside). These are not Pride Prejudice numbers but, like I Still Believe, not too bad if the budget is small. Universal picked a bad time to finally spring The Hunt into theaters; the film opened to just .3 million and now likely will not even match its million production budget. The Hunt is third behind BlacKkKlansman ( million) and Glass ( million) as the most expensive Blumhouse production to date.Last week’s The Way Back took a steep 69 percent drop, and its total stands at .4 million. Even with a million budget, that is miles better than The Call of the Wild, which is only up to .1 million locally and 7 million globally and still chasing a 5 million price tag before prints and ads. The CGI-ed dog tale starring Harrison Ford at least outperformed Dolittle in the red for the year, but like all of the holdovers in the top 10 this week, it dropped between 60-75 percent from the week before. This Time Last Year: Captain Marvel DazzlesThree new wide releases and a limited release that made the top 10 were no match combined for Captain Marvel’s second weekend take of .98 million, driving its haul to 4.88 million in its first 10 days. Paramount’s animated disappointment, Wonder Park, opened to second with .85 million with young-adult weepie Five Feet Apart taking third with .19 million. Sci-fi thriller, Captive State started way back in seventh with .13 million and was beaten by No Manches Frida 2, which grossed .83 million in just 472 theaters, 2,000 fewer than Captive. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part finally crossed the 0 million mark in its sixth weekend. The top 10 films grossed 6.41 million and averaged 55% on the Tomatometer. This year’s top 10 grossed an estimated .35 million and averaged 67.5 percent. On the Vine: Will Limited Releases Brave the Market?Director John Krasinski took to social media to announce that his anticipated sequel A Quiet Place Part II has been postponed until further notice. Better get your scares in while you can, because three Fresh and Certified Fresh horror movies are leaving Netflix at the end of October 2020. Tim Burton s collaboration with (who else?) Johnny Depp scored a Fresh 69% after its 1999 release, while Best Picture-winning The Silence of the Lambs and unique zombie-take The Girl With All the Gifts are Certified Fresh; all three will be gone after Halloween. In general, a larger-than-usual chunk of Netflix s Certified Fresh movies are leaving at the end of the month, including modern sci-fi classic District 9, Steven Soderbergh s Magic Mike, epic 80s fantasia The Neverending Story, and the classic Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan romcom Sleepless in Seattle.Other popular movies soon to leave Netflix, and which didn t score particularly high with critics, include the first three Underworld movies, Mel Brooks spoof Spaceballs, Jim Carrey s career-starter Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and Jack Black s Nacho Libre.Read on for the full list of movies leaving Netflix at the end of October 2020, and then take a look and get ready for everything coming to Netflix in November.Leaving 10/31

This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering new titles like Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore and The Lost Boys. This WEEK S TOP STORYSUPER MARIO BROS. HITS PLAY BUTTON IN LATE 2022 (Photo by Michael Tran/Getty Images, Priscilla Grant, Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)In 1993, Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo starred in the ill-fated live action adaptation of the popular video game series Super Mario Bros. (Rotten at 28%), setting an early example for 25+ years of video game adaptations that almost always earned Rotten Tomatometer scores. The mistake in 1993 might have been making Super Mario Bros. live action set in the real world, since games like Super Mario World and its sequels and spinoffs were set in such brightly lit fantasy worlds. In 2017, the news first broke that Nintendo was partnering with Illumination Entertainment, the animation studio behind Despicable Me, The Secret Life of Pets, and Sing, to produce an animated adaptation of Super Mario Bros. Yesterday, Universal and Illumination confirmed Super Mario Bros. will be released next year on December 21, 2022. Mario and Luigi will be voiced by Chris Pratt and Charlie Day (It s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), respectively, alongside Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong. Charles Martinet, the video game voice of Mario, will also have an unspecified cameo role. Although he doesn t use what will likely be his Mario voice, you can hear Chris Pratt say It s-a Me, Mario! for the first time in this Instagram post.  Super Mario Bros. will be directed by the Teen Titans Go! To the Movies team of Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, working from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel (The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part and the upcoming Minions: The Rise of Gru). The December 21st date for Super Mario Bros. in 2022 lands it just five days after two other high profile movies, Avatar 2 and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, both currently scheduled for December 16, 2022.Other Top Headlines1. THIRD FANTASTIC BEASTS WILL EXPLORE THE SECRETS OF DUMBLEDORE (Photo by © 2018 Warner Bros. Ent.)J.K. Rowling s original 2001 Harry Potter spinoff book Fanastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was a fairly direct encyclopedia of exactly what the title promised, but the film adaptation (Certified Fresh at 74%) and especially its sequel Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (Rotten at 36%) arguably spent more time exploring the backstory of Harry Potter s human characters than it did showing off, you know, Fantastic Beasts. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic pushing back filming several months (the original start date was 3/16/2020), the third movie now titled Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore has been pushed up three months from July 15, 2022 to the Easter weekend of April 15, 2022. The title suggests more backstory for the young Dumbledore (played by Jude Law), and we also know that Mads Mikkelsen is stepping in to replace Johnny Depp as the villainous wizard Gellert Grindelwald. The other movies currently scheduled for April 15, 2022 are the romantic adventure The Lost City of D (starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum) and the DreamWorks animated comedy The Bad Guys (featuring the voices of Awkwafina, Anthony Ramos, and Sam Rockwell).2. HENRY GOLDING AND NOOMI RAPACE JOIN THE ASSASSIN CLUB (Photo by Kristin Callahan, Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)Every once in a rare while, film producers will announce a film after it has finished production. Assassin Club is an action movie that recently wrapped filming in Italy, and the cast includes an eclectic mix of stars. Henry Golding recently appeared in Guy Ritchie s The Gentlemen (Certified Fresh at 75%) and headlined Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins (Rotten at 37%), but he s probably best known as the male lead in Crazy Rich Asians (Certified Fresh at 90%), and and Noomi Rapace has been in movies like Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and the original Swedish trilogy that began with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Certified Fresh at 85%). Together, they star in Assassin Club as two of six assassins (of course) who have all been unknowingly hired to kill each other. Relative newcomer Daniela Melchior (Ratcatcher II in The Suicide Squad) co-stars as the girlfriend of Golding s character, while the venerable Sam Neill is signed on to play his mentor. The film is expected to release sometime next year, though a specific date hasn t been announced yet.3. CLASSIC 1980S TEEN VAMPIRE FLICK THE LOST BOYS TO BE REMADE (Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Although Hollywood s obsession with remaking its past successes is starting to creep more and more into the 1990s, there are still a few 1980s favorites that are going to be revisited soon. One movie that it might actually be surprising wasn t remade already was the 1987 hit The Lost Boys (Certified Fresh at 76%), starring Kiefer Sutherland as the leader of a gang of eternally (and stylishly) teenage vampires. Possibly part of the delay is that the plan had been for it to be rebooted as a TV show on The CW, but that pilot wasn t picked up, so Warner Bros. is opting to go with a movie. It looks like The Lost Boys remake might start filming soon, because it s being announced with its stars already attached. Those stars will be Noah Jupe (the son from A Quiet Place) and Jaeden Martell (Bill from the recent IT remakes), although it s unclear which characters they will be playing (this writer s guess is that they might play the two human brothers). The remake of The Lost Boys will be directed by Jonathan Entwistle (TV s The End of the F***ing World) from a screenplay by Randy McKinnon, who is also adapting the DC Comics title Static Shock.4. JOHN BOYEGA JOINS THE WOMAN KING AS THE (OTHER) KING (Photo by Everett Collection)One of the most intriguing elements of Marvel s Black Panther are the Dora Milaje, the all-female bodyguards of the King of Wakanda, which were based on the historical all-female military group called the Amazons of Dahomey. Their story will soon be told in the historical epic The Woman King, in which Viola Davis and Thuso Mbedu have been attached to star for some time, but casting is starting to step up as filming nears, including Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel) joining the cast a few weeks ago. John Boyega (Finn from the recent Star Wars movies) also joined The Woman King recently as Dahomey s King Ghezo. The Woman King will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Old Guard, The Secret Life of Bees).5. STANLEY TUCCI JOINS WHITNEY HOUSTON BIOPIC (Photo by Jason Mendez/Everett Collection)The COVID-19 pandemic may have dented the box office potential of the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect this summer, but Hollywood remains optimistic about the genre. Next year, we re finally going to get the pandemic-delayed Elvis biopic (6/3/2022) from director Baz Luhrmann, followed by the Whitney Houston biopic I Wanna Dance with Somebody (12/23/2022), starring Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), just in time for Christmas. We ve known about Ackie s involvement for a while now, but the biggest lingering casting question was about who would play New Edition singer and eventual Mr. Whitney Houston, Bobby Brown. The role of Brown will be played by Ashton Sanders, who is probably best known for his role as one of the teenagers in the Academy Award-winning 2016 drama Moonlight (Certified Fresh at 98%). Another key role will be record producer and executive Clive Davis, who will be portrayed by Stanley Tucci, and who is often credited with helping Whitney Houston achieve her stardom in the 80s. With Bobby Brown and Clive Davis, the next major figure in Whitney Houston s life yet to be cast might be her famous aunt, Dionne Warwick.6. WILL SMITH TURNING HIS 1990S HIT SONG SUMMERTIME INTO A HIP-HOP MUSICAL Years before starring in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Will Smith was one half of the hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff the Fresh Prince who had their biggest hit in 1991 with Summertime, which came out just as Smith s sitcom finished its first season. Fast forward 30 years, and Smith is not only a major movie star, but also a successful film producer, and he is now turning his attention back to Summertime. Smith s Westbrook Studios is partnering with Davis Entertainment to develop a hip-hop movie musical adapted from the song Summertime. Peter Saji, who is a writer on Black-ish and Cougartown, and co-created Mixed-ish, will adapt Summertime into a screenplay for which he will also make his directorial debut. It s not yet known if Will Smith plans on co-starring in the film.7. KEVIN BACON RETURNS TO HORROR IN UNTITLED BLUMHOUSE PROJECT (Photo by RCF/Everett Collection)Way before Tremors, and even before Footloose, one of Kevin Bacon s earliest roles was as one of the victims in the original Friday the 13th (Fresh at 63%) in 1980. Bacon has done thrillers and similar genres since then, and this week, he signed to co-star in another horror film, specifically an untitled Blumhouse project previously known as Whistler Camp, a story of LGBTQIA+ empowerment set at a gay conversion camp. The lead camper will be played by Theo Germaine, who might currently be best known for his role in Netflix s The Politician (Rotten at 48%), and it will be the feature directorial debut for screenwriter John Logan (Gladiator, The Aviator). In related news, Kevin Bacon s daughter Sosie Bacon, who had a supporting role in Mare of Easttown, landed a lead role in the psychological thriller Something w Wrong with Rose this week.8. THE RUSSIANS HAVE BEATEN TOM CRUISE IN THE NEW SPACE RACE (Photo by ©Universal Pictures)One of the craziest new movie projects to be announced last year was Tom Cruise s untitled film that aimed to be the first movie ever filmed in outer space, which is expected to film on the International Space Station under the direction of Doug Liman, who directed Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow (Certified Fresh at 91%) and American Made (Certified Fresh at 86%). Given how many pieces need to be in place for Cruise s ambitious project to actually happen, it perhaps not be surprising that he and Liman ended up losing this particular space race. Instead, it s going to be the Russians who make the first movie in space, as a film called The Challenge will be lifting off on October 5th. Having said that, it appears likely that Cruise s project will still be able to claim to be the first Hollywood production to film in space presuming it happens soon, before Richard Branson or Elon Musk beat him to it.9. CLASSIC 1980S MANGA TO BECOME LIVE ACTION KNIGHTS OF THE ZODIAC  (Photo by ©Toei Company/Courtesy Everett Collection)Hollywood seems to be slowing down a bit on adapting comic books (that aren t Marvel or DC), but in addition to video game adaptations, Hollywood is increasingly turning to manga and anime as sources for live-action adaptations. This week s news involves a classic 1980s manga (that was also adapted as an anime), Masami Kurumada s Saint Seiya, which is being adapted by Sony as Knights of the Zodiac. The movie has already been filmed at locations in Hungary and Croatia, with a cast that includes Mackenyu (Pacific Rim: Uprising), Madison Iseman (from the two recent Jumanji movies), Sean Bean (Game of Thrones), Famke Janssen (X-Men), Nick Stahl (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines), Diego Tinoco, and Mark Dacascos. Mackenyu will star as Seiya, a street orphan who embarks on a journey to conquer the ancient Greek armor of Pegasus and choose his side in a preternatural battle for the fate of Sienna (Iseman), a young girl who struggles to control her godly powers. Ghcxuf Alita: Battle Angel (2019) 61% Rating: PG-13, for sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and for some language. It may look colorful and lively, and the main character may seem inviting with her wide, inquisitive eyes. But Alita: Battle Angel is really quite violent and not meant for young viewers. Fans of the manga series that inspired the movie probably won’t be surprised to learn that. And granted, much of the graphic violence happens to cyborgs who bleed blue, but still – they’re imbued with human characteristics, and we’re meant to care about them as such. So when they get stabbed or sliced in half or dismembered entirely, the imagery can be shocking. The visual effects and elaborate action sequences in the film from director Robert Rodriguez and writer-producer James Cameron are really the main reason to see Alita – that, and the game, physical performance from Rosa Salazar as the title character. She’s an abandoned cyborg whom a doctor (Christoph Waltz) brings back to life in a futuristic, post-apocalyptic society. But she can’t remember who she was; she only knows she has formidable warrior instincts and abilities that make her both powerful and a target. Alita also takes part in a Rollerball-type game that’s fast-paced and treacherous. She’s basically in constant peril. Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, and Jackie Earle Haley are among the impressive supporting cast. I didn’t bring my 9-year-old son with me to the Alita screening I attended, and I was glad afterward. It’s a big, mindless spectacle, but it really earns its PG-13 rating. 😈😈

January has come and gone, bringing us one legitimate Best Picture contender (1917), one surprise hit (who knew Bad Boys for Life would actually be good?), and a handful of duds, which is pretty much par for the course at this time of year. As we enter the month that celebrates romance, Black history, and American presidents, the movie slate doesn t look like it s going to set the world on fire, but there s still a few notable titles to consider. We ve got the latest DC Comics movie, for starters, and a Cannes Film Festival winner, a video game-based adventure, a children s movie based on a classic novel, and a horror remake. But what did RT users and our fans on social media vote to the top of the list? See below for the most anticipated movies opening in February.1. Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (2020) 79%3,681 Want-to-See Votes#1 pick by our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter fansOpens February 7Margot Robbie sheds the Suicide Squad for her own marquee film sort of as she takes center stage as Harley Quinn in this DC Comics adaptation. Here, she and her cohort of fierce lady friends (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, and Rosie Perez) take on a Gotham City crime lord (Ewan McGregor) who s out to get a young girl named Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco). This movie racked up the most Want-to-See votes by far and rocketed to the top of all of our social polls as the most anticipated film of the month, and early word on social media has been overwhelmingly positive. We ll see if the film retains that heat when it opens the first week of February.2. Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) 63%1,650 Want-to-See Votes#2 pick by our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter fansOpens February 14Remember when the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog premiered and the internet did a collective spit-take at the inexplicably malformed character design? Remember when the studio then backtracked and redesigned Sonic to match the original character more closely? Whether or not it was all a clever marketing ploy (all press is good press, right?) to convince nostalgic moviegoers that the people behind the film were on their side, it s resulted in a fairly healthy anticipation for the film, which finds the blue speedster an alien from another planet teaming up with his newfound human bestie (James Marsden) to take on a gleefully unhinged Jim Carrey in the form of the original game s classic nemesis, Dr. Robotnik. This one also unanimously took second place in all of our social polls and earned the second-most Want-to-See votes on RT.3. Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) 98%1,252 Want-to-See Votes#3 pick by our Twitter fans, #4 pick by our Facebook fans, #5 pick by our Instagram fansOpens February 14Sure, the top two vote-getters in February are broadly marketed Hollywood fare, but if there was any doubt that RT users are a diverse group who flock to all sorts of films, this should help alleviate some of it. Earning a spot in the top five in all of our social polls, as well as the third-most Want-to-See votes, is this French romantic drama from celebrated director Céline Sciamma that took home both the Queer Palm and the award for Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival last year. The story follows an artist who is hired to secretly paint the portrait of a reluctant bride-to-be; as the two spend more time together, a growing attraction becomes apparent and threatens to upend both their lives.4. The Invisible Man (2020) 91%1,009 Want-to-See Votes#3 pick by our Facebook and Instagram fans, #4 pick by our Twitter fansOpens February  28H.G. Wells seminal science-fiction novel has been adapted or borrowed from on several occasions since its publication in 1897, most notably in 1933 as part of Universal Pictures stable of monster movies. Now, with the studio s desire to update their classic horror pictures (formerly as part of a Dark Universe ), we re getting a new version starring Elisabeth Moss as a woman who may or may not be imagining the unseen presence of her abusive ex, a brilliant scientist who apparently committed suicide but might have actually discovered a way to turn himself invisible instead. Encouraged by a fairly effective trailer, initially skeptical moviegoers have turned the corner to cautious optimism, making the film February s fourth-most anticipated title.5. The Call of the Wild (2020) 62%1,116 Want-to-See Votes#4 pick by our Instagram fans, #5 pick by our Facebook fansOpens February 21Speaking of celebrated literature brought to the big screen, our last entry on the list adapts a Jack London masterpiece with the help of modern technology. While previous iterations of The Call of the Wild were content to work with live St. Bernards, this film stars a computer-animated Buck alongside Harrison Ford as John Thornton, who encounters the canine hero after he s been dognapped from his domestic life in California and sold as a beast of labor in the Alaskan Yukon. This one made into the top five of our Facebook and Instagram polls, and it earned the fourth most Want-to-See votes of all movies this month.Thumnail image by Warner Bros. PicturesLike this? 亚博体彩APP投注平台 Bad Boys for Life (2020) 76% Nobody asked for another sequel to Bad Boys, the Michael Bay-directed 1995 action hit starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, but somebody got it in their head to do one anyway, and 17 years after the first sequel came out, here we are with another installment. Bad Boys for Life reunites Smith s suave, playboy Miami detective Mike Lowery with his family-man partner, Lawrence s Marcus Burnett, after the two have walked their own paths for some time. As they both prepare for retirement, a cartel boss with connections to their past initiates a vendetta against Mike, forcing them to work together alongside a team of younger cops to bring him down. Critics say the new film, helmed by the directorial team of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, improves on the template set by the previous two films, pulling the best elements from them and infusing the story with more heart, and the result is a surprisingly enjoyable ride. The film is somewhat tamer than Bay s typical macho posturing and wanton destruction, which is mostly a welcome development, and Smith and Lawrence sizzle on screen together like they haven t spent the last decade and a half apart. At the end of the day, Bad Boys for Life even had some critics looking forward to another installment, which says a lot for a movie hardly anyone wanted in the first place.
