(Photo by Dean Buscher/The CW)Supernatural began as the story of two brothers in a Chevy Impala hunting urban myths, but soon grew to include a sprawling universe of angels, demons, alternate worlds, and Crowley (Mark Sheppard). The CW series hits a big milestone this week: the airing of its 300th episode, Lebanon. It is a rarity in television, considering the number of seasons a series needs to hit such a landmark. As star Jensen Ackles told Rotten Tomatoes when we visited the set recently, only 23 other scripted primetime television shows have reached the 300 mark, a milestone practically unheard of in the realm of genre television — except for a certain British show about a time traveler, of course. We caught up with the cast and producers just before they began production on the episode. At the time, thoughts about the milestone left them a little bewildered. As star Jared Padalecki put it, “it’s a weird juxtaposition of feelings” landing between “humility and pride at the same time.”According to Ackles, the milestone episodes “sneak up on you.” At the time of the 200th episode in 2014 — the musical episode “Fan Fiction” — he thought the show might be winding down, but it just kept getting picked up.“The seasonal pickups then dictate the episodic counts. Then you start stepping back and we re like, ‘Wait a minute, we re going to hit 300 next season?’”(Photo by Dean Buscher/The CW)Naturally, the occasion led to some reflection. Executive producer Robert Singer said he enjoys the emotional and character-forward episodes because the show is firing on all cylinders when it reaches “that combo of being kind of a good horror show, but having a lot of heart.”Executive producer Eugenie Ross-Leming in particular loved the addition of Mark Pellegrino to the cast. Initially joining the series as a temporary vessel for the Prince of Darkness in season 5, Pellegrino returned through Supernatural means to play Nick, the human forced to contain Lucifer time and time again. After years in a recurring role, season 14 marked the actor’s first season as a regular.Pellegrino, for his part, really enjoyed playing Lucifer across the years — though actors including Padalecki, Misha Collins, and Rick Springfield have also played the role.“My favorite memories are when I first came onto the show and played apocalyptic Lucifer and sort of built the mythology of Lucifer, he told Rotten Tomatoes. It s just sort of been a nice creative little journey going through the various character changes that Lucifer s gone through over the years.”When Lucifer (caged within Nick) was defeated last season, Pellegrino thought “dead was dead,” but then he remembered “it’s Supernatural,” and there is always a way back. When we talked to him, however, he was still uncertain how Nick survived the Archangel Blade.“I have theories,” he teased. One of producer Brad Buckner’s favorite moments was the decision to create the Men of Letters bunker in season 8.“[It] was a fantastic thing because it gave them roots on a show that had been rootless for so long,” he explained. “It really gave them a base of operation. Now it s a hangout place where people congregate, and I think that increased the feeling of the family dynamic that I think is really the attraction of the show.”(Photo by The CW)While still focused on Sam and Dean, the series expanded to include key characters like Castiel (Collins) and a larger world (and then a second world) beyond the Winchesters; a tradition that continues with the arrival of Jack (Alex Calvert), the son of Lucifer and a genuine Nephil — a human-angel hyrbid.“Alex is just a wonderful addition to the core cast, and he seems to fit in and blend so well,” Buckner said. “You don t get lucky like that too often, and we ve been lucky multiple times.”As one of the most recent additions to the show, Calvert has enjoyed fan interactions most of all.“Comic-con was very cool,” he said. “But another great memory that I had was last year we got to go see the Scoobynatural presentation in Hollywood, which was so cool, because we got to watch it with 1,000 fans.” He appreciated the vibe, which he said felt like “we were doing a midnight screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show.”For Danneel Ackles, who recurred in season 13 as Sister Jo and the angel Anael, her favorite memory revolves around the moment she finally understood her husband’s least favorite part of the job: outdoor shoots in the dead of winter.“He ll call me and I m chasing all these children around, and he s like, ‘It s freezing. You don t understand, I ve just been doing a scene outside for seven hours,’” she said. Her go-to response: Don t be a baby, you re an actor. There s a cheese plate coming. That changed after she did a scene with Pellegrino in extreme conditions.“It was like 20 below zero and the wind s blowing and we re just — I ve never been so cold in my life, she said. I had heat packets stuffed in places I can t tell you about. I was like, ‘Oh, I get it, I get the show.’”One thing fans definitely get about the show is Castiel. The character has become a popular cosplay subject at comic conventions — even if his costume resembles a certain other trench coat enthusiast with ties to the mystical. But the confusion led to one of Collins’ favorite off-set memories.“I often on Halloween see kids dressed as Castiel, because it s now become a thing, Collins said. My family was eating at this pizza place and I saw this kid dressed as Castiel and I went up to his table. He was about 10. I put my face right in his face and I said, What are you dressed as, young man? And he looked at me horrified and said, ‘Constantine.’ Then his dad said, ‘Get away from my son.’”Supernatural s 300th episode airs Thursday, Feb. 7 at 8/7C on The CW.

The cast includes Westworld s James Marsden as working-class factory man Stu Redman, Aquaman s Amber Heard as the conflicted Nadine Cross, Odessa Young as the young, pregnant Frannie Goldsmith, and Henry Zaga as the deaf and mute newfound leader Nick Andros. The series takes place a post-apocalyptic world decimated by plague where the forces of good and evil, and the fate of mankind rests on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old other Mother Abagail and a handful of survivors. Their worst nightmares are embodied in a man with a lethal smile and unspeakable powers: Randall Flagg, the Dark Man, per the official description. The Stand’s previous adaptations include a 1994 miniseries that starred Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald, and Rob Lowe and a 2008 Marvel comic series. The Man Who Fell to Earth Series in the Works From Star Trek: Discovery Producers(Photo by Courtesy Everett Collection)The Man Who Fell to Earth is turning into a TV series. Based on the novel of the same name and the 1976 film starring David Bowie, the series will follow an alien who arrives on Earth at a turning point in human evolution and must confront his own past to determine our future, per the official announcement.“Walter Tevis’ visionary novel gave us a tech god Willy Wonka from another planet, brought to life by David Bowie’s legendary performance, that foretold Steve Jobs’ and Elon Musk’s impacts on our world. The series will imagine the next step in our evolution, seen through the eyes of an alien who must learn what it means to become human, even as he fights for the survival of his species,” co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet said in a statement. Kurtzman and Lumet are both producers on CBS All Access Star Trek: Discovery.Marvel s Runaways Meet Cloak DaggerMarvel s teen superhero shows are staging a crossover: In the upcoming third season of the Hulu drama Runaways, the main characters from the Freeform drama Cloak Dagger will meet up with the titular teen superhero team. Details about the story line have not yet been revealed.“It’s so fun being able to do something that revels in the Mighty Marvel Manner! Having these young heroes cross over allows fans of both shows to see the adventure everyone has been waiting for and we’ve only hinted at,” said Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb in a statement announcing the news.Season 3 of Runaways premieres all 10 episodes December 13 on Hulu.Evil Is More Than an Exorcism of the Week The CBS drama Evil, which follows a psychologist, a priest-in-training, and a carpenter who investigate the backlog of unexplained mysteries in the Catholic church, is — as seen in the trailer above — much scarier than any series the network has aired before. But just because it s a procedural doesn t mean the series will feel the same from week to week. We are trying to avoid exorcism of the week, co-creator Robert King told reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Thursday. The second episode is about miracles. It’s about those question marks in life that you don’t quite know how they happen — a school where all the girls at the school start laughing, and it seems to be almost viral. I would say the other thing is you’re looking at life and you’re seeing evil, not with a capital E but with a small e — the boss who throws things at his employees. Where does that fit in? So that is really what our people are [doing]: Just figuring out what is genetically based villainy, if you want to use that word instead of evil, and what is something that’s even bigger, something more supernatural? But also looking at hope. (Photo by Paramount/courtesy Everett Collection)All James Cameron Movies RankedFor James Cameron, it all started with a severed arm and some maggots. He was art director on Roger Corman s Piranha II: The Spawning and, for one special effect, thought to motivate some live maggots into movement in a prosthetic arm by shocking the prop with a live electrical cable. This helped him get promoted to director on Piranha II, setting in motion a career associated with groundbreaking sci-fi and genre movies.Cameron has long since disavowed his Piranha experience he was only director for less than three weeks and didn t have access to dailies or the editing room paving the way to claim The Terminator as his feature debut, which we admit looks slightly better on a resume. And in this story of time-travelin cyborgs run amuck, we already see one of Cameron s core fascinations: the frequently fatal conflict between man and technology, and the way it cuts off our own humanity (ironically told using state-of-the-art special FX), as seen in later movies like T2: Judgment Day, The Abyss, and Avatar. The success of the first Terminator got him into the major studio system with a gig directing Aliens, which also further cemented his reputation of creating hardened female protagonists.By the 90s, Cameron had the freedom to indulge in his obsessions, including ocean exploration, which produced Best Picture phenom Titanic (only the highest-grossing movie ever at one point) and two documentaries, Ghosts of the Abyss and Aliens of the Deep. He returned to narrative filmmaking with Avatar (only the highest-grossing movie ever at one point), and though he didn t release a movie in the 2010s, it s going to be Avatar that will carry him and us through the 2020s: No less than 4 sequels are planned for that decade.
Ahead of the release of Illumination’s The Grinch, Rotten Tomatoes borrowed Fandango kid correspondent Ariana Raetz for the day and sat down with stars Benedict Cumberbatch – who plays the mean one himself – and Cameron Seely, who voices Cindy-Lou Who. Cumberbatch reveals the first time he came across the infamous character, while Seely recalls her time in the recording booth (a lot of the time she was directed via Skype). Both actors also reveal how this 2018 take on the story differs from the original book, the beloved Boris Karloff cartoon, and Ron Howard’s 2000 film. The Grinch is currently in theaters everywhere. a novels). Something changed, however, when Taika Waititi (Thor: Raganrok, 93% Certified Fresh) signed on with Warner Bros. and producer Leonardo DiCaprio for Akira instead. The bad news, however, is that Waititi s fans are still going to have to wait almost two years for Akira, because the film is now scheduled for release on May 21, 2021. Waititi s film will reportedly be adapted directly from Katsuhiro Otomo s Akira manga volumes, and will not be a shot-by-shot remake of the anime. In related news, both Waititi and Netflix dropped out this week of the Bubbles biopic about the life of Michael Jackson s pet chimpanzee.4. The First Stars Movie Based On a Video Game is In Development(Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/©Paramount Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)Ever since we first heard that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were developing a trilogy of Star Wars movies, there has been speculation that their films would be set in the Old Republic setting, some 3,600 years before Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. This week brought an unexpected wrinkle to that theory with the news that a movie based on the popular video game franchise Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is now in active development (separate from Benioff/Weiss). Instead, the KOTOR movie is being adapted by screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis, whose produced filmography includes Alita: Battle Angel, Martin Scorsese s Shutter Island, and the Netflix science-fiction series Altered Carbon. As with the two other Star Wars projects that Benioff/Weiss and Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) are working on separately, the Knights of the Old Republic movie is described as being the first of a potential trilogy. Kalogridis also now has the distinction of being the first female screenwriter to work on a Star Wars movie since Leigh Brackett cowrote The Empire Strikes Back in 1980. In related news, we learned more this week about Keri Russell s character in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, as well as more about the Knights of Ren.5. Chip N Dale Live-Action Film, Courtesy of the Lonely Island(Photo by @ Buena Vista Television)With Disney now done with Dumbo and Aladdin, The Lion King coming this summer, and Mulan and Cruella coming in 2020, it’s starting to look like they’ll run out of classic animated movies to adapt as live-action films by the middle of the coming decade. Disney, however, might be way ahead of us, as this week brought news that suggests their next steps could involve adapting some of their popular animated TV series as well. Walt Disney Pictures has begun development of a live-action/CGI hybrid adaptation of the studio s popular Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers TV series. The original series ran for a relatively brief amount of time on The Disney Channel (1989 to 1990), but it then entered syndication, where it arguably left a bigger impact and found a larger audience. Akiva Schaffer, of the musical comedy team Lonely Island (along with Andy Samberg), will direct the Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers movie, which will reportedly have a meta angle that s not an origin story. It s not yet known if Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers will debut on the Disney+ streaming service or whether it will receive a full theatrical release.6. Michael Peña Might Get to Recap What Happens in The Tom Jerry MovieJoel MearesAfter he provided some of the funniest scenes in the two Ant-Man movies, many fans were disappointed to find that Michael Peña’s Luis wasn t one of the supporting characters who returned for Avengers: Endgame (maybe he was hanging out with Darcy and Goose). That was especially disappointing given that we still haven t heard of active development for a third Ant-Man movie yet either. Whatever s causing Marvel Studios to drag its feet on that might be to Warner Bros. s advantage, because that studio has cast Michael Peña as one of the human leads in their upcoming Tom Jerry movie (April 16, 2021). Chloë Grace Moretz will be the lead character, as a new employee at an elegant hotel where Peña s character is the deputy general manager, and an alley cat named Tom is enlisted to take care of a pesky mouse named Jerry. Tom and Jerry will be mute, as they were in most of their classic cartoon short films.7. Slow Your Roll, Sonic the Hedgehog: Redesign Needs a Few More MonthsJoel MearesIn a rare example of people complaining about a movie online actually having an immediate impact, earlier this month, The Weekly Ketchup reported that Sonic the Hedgehog was getting a CGI redesign for his upcoming movie following negative reactions to the first trailer. People quickly speculated that such a rework would probably require more time, and that proved to be a correct guess as this week Paramount Pictures pushed the release back from November 8, 2019 to Valentine s Day, 2020 (up against the third Kingsman movie). Jim Carrey is expected to look pretty much exactly the same as Doctor Robotnik.Rotten Ideas2. This Week in Remakes Pt. 1: Eddie Murphy, Samuel L. Jackson May Be Grumpy Old Men(Photo by @ Summit Entertainment, @ DreamWorks)Although Samuel L. Jackson did have small roles in both Coming to America and the comedy concert film Eddie Murphy: Raw, he s never costarred with Eddie Murphy in the last 25 years or so, the era in which Samuel L. Jackson is a mega star. If this week s news goes anywhere, that may change in the next few years, as both actors are now being named as the possible leads in the same film. That movie would be a remake of 1993 s Grumpy Old Men (63% Fresh), starring Jack Lemmon (then 68) and Walter Matthau (then 73). Eddie Murphy (currently 58) is already attached to star in this remake, and Samuel L. Jackson (currently 70) is reportedly circling the project. Unfortunately, the Grumpy Old Men remake currently looks like a Rotten Idea due to the multitude of Rotten Tomatometer scores for the remake s director, Tim Story. But it could be time for a turnaround.1. This Week in Remakes Pt. 2: Mel Gibson s The Wild Bunch(Photo by Patrick Redmond / © Vertical Entertainment )There s a common notion that the best candidates for remakes are films that were flawed in the first place. The idea is that revisiting movies that could genuinely be improved makes more sense than revisiting something that is generally considered to have been done right the first time. For example, 1939 s The Wizard of Oz is itself a remake (and not even the first one), following silent films that lacked the music that made it a classic. So, when a movie like 1969 s The Wild Bunch has a 94% Certified Fresh Tomatometer score and a spot on various Best Movies of All Time lists, you d think no one would ever consider remaking it. Those people would not be Mel Gibson. Warner Bros. is preparing exactly such a remake to be directed by Gibson, and negotiations have begun with three major stars. The potential stars for The Wild Bunch remake include Michael Fassbender (Prometheus, X-Men: First Class), Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained), and fresh off HBO s Game of Thrones, Peter Dinklage.Like this? Young actor Roman Griffin Davis makes his feature film debut as the title character in Taika Waititi s Jojo Rabbit, an anti-hate satire about a pre-teen Nazi who deals with the stresses of WWII Germany by talking to his imaginary friend Adolf. (Yes, that Adolf.) Davis s performance is being heralded by critics as one of the best child debuts in years – he s hilarious and heartbreaking, nimbly navigating the tonal shifts Waititi s movie makes as Jojo befriends the Jewish girl his mother is hiding in the house and begins to question his blind allegiance to the Fuhrer (both the real and imagined one). Davis sat down with Rotten Tomatoes for our video series Fresh First and opened up about working with Waititi and Scarlett Johansson, how he s changed since shooting, and why cheese toasties are the ideal on-set snack.
