(Photo by © Buena Vista Pictures/ Courtesy: Everett Collection)For many, Sister Act 2: Back In the Habit is a movie with pretty much everything: An incredible lead star in Whoopi Goldberg, rousing musical numbers to spare, next-gen talent destined for greatness (hello, Lauryn Hill!), and – with its triumph-over-adversity and pursue-your-dreams themes – so many feels. And yet at the time of its release, the critics weren t feeling it. The beloved comedy sequel, which came out just a year and a half after the super-successful original, was largely dismissed as a retread not just of that first film, but of the inspirational teacher inspires inner-city kids genre more generally. It has a current Tomatometer score of just 17%, and it s been much lower than that in the past. That score has not gone unnoticed. Not by Buzzfeed Australia, not by the latest guest on our new podcast, and not by a slew of 90s kids, who have told us in no uncertain terms in comments, Audience reviews, and at bars when we tell them where we work, that when it comes to Sister Act 2, Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong. And so yes, we had to talk about it and record ourselves as we did.Listen Now:  Spotify |  Apple Podcasts  |  Stitcher  |  TuneIn  |  Google Podcasts | Radio Public | Deezer | iHeart | Art19In the latest ep of our new podcast, Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong, we re bowing our heads in deep reflection and asking why this film that so many Millennials worship so adoringly was deemed by critics to be such a sin against cinema. Hosts Jacqueline Coley and Mark Ellis are joined by Maikiko James – Director of Programs at Women In Film and movie lover whose favorite film ever just happens to be Sister Act 2 – to sing the praises of the movie s soaring musical numbers, its deep bench of future superstars, and get into the Whoopi of it all. Crucially, they ll also ask whether Back In the Habit – a landmark for representation in mainstream American film at the time – ever stood a chance, given who was doing the reviewing for America s newspapers, radio stations, and networks when it was released.Be sure to check in every Thursday for a new episode of Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong (A Podcast From Rotten Tomatoes). Each week, hosts Jacqueline and Mark and guests go deep and settle the score on some of the most beloved – and despised – movies and TV shows ever made, directly taking on the statement we hear from so many fans: “Rotten Tomatoes is wrong.”Check out episode one:  Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About  Spider-Man 3Check out episode two:  Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About  Mortal KombatCheck out episode three: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About  Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal SkullIf you have a suggestion for a movie or show you think we should do an episode on, let us know in the comments, or email us at rtiswrong@rottentomatoes.com.Meet the hostsJacqueline Coley is an editor at Rotten Tomatoes, with a focus on awards and indie coverage but with a passion for everything, from the MCU to musicals and period pieces. SAUSAGE PARTY DIRECTOR TO REMAKE CHILDREN S FILM THE BORROWERS  (Photo by PolyGram Filmed Entertainment courtesy Everett Collection)Sometimes, film development news brings together rather disparate elements. Let s start at the beginning, which was the 1952 children s fantasy novel The Borrowers by English author Mary Norton, about a family of tiny people who secretly live underneath humans from whom they borrow small objects (which are big to them). That book was then adapted in 1997 as a live-action movie (Fresh at 73%) starring John Goodman and Jim Broadbent, and then adapted again by Studio Ghibli as the anime movie The Secret World of Arrietty (Certified Fresh at 95%). Universal Pictures and Working Title are now developing a third adaptation which will again be live-action and be called The Borrowers. The screenplay will be written by Patrick Burleigh (co-writer of Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway) and will be directed by Conrad Vernon (The Addams Family, Sausage Party). So, to loop back, the same project ties in English fantasy, Japanese anime, and an R-rated animated film. Like we said, disparate. 5. VIGGO MORTENSEN, LEA SEYDOUX, KRISTEN STEWART JOIN DAVID CRONENBERG S NEXT FILM(Photo by Priscilla Grant, Jason Mendez/Everett Collection)Canadian directgor David Cronenberg is well known among horror and science fiction fans for his films from the 1970s (Shivers, Rabid, The Brood) and 1980s (Scanners, Videodrome, The Dead Zone, The Fly, Dead Ringers), but the earliest of those aforementioned films (Shivers) was actually his third after Stereo in 1969 and Crimes of the Future in 1970, both of which are barely over an hour long. That second film seems quite relevant to this week s news, because Cronenberg is making another film called Crimes of the Future, though it s not yet clear if the two are otherwise related. The project is expected to start filming in Greece this summer, and Cronenberg has already found his three leads, who will be Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux, and Kristen Stewart. Mortensen previously starred in both A History of Violence and Eastern Promises, making Crimes of the Future their third project together. Crimes of the Future is billed as Cronenberg s first original science fiction project since 1999 s eXistenZ, which seems to suggest no direct connection between this upcoming film and the 1970 movie.6. GAL GADOT SAYS MEET ME IN ANOTHER LIFE (Photo by RCF/Everett Collection)In Wonder Woman and its recent sequel Wonder Woman 1984, Gal Gadot and Chris Pine played lovers who are brought back together through magic after decades apart (a separation that, for one of them, was also between life and death and then life again). Considering that, one might make the argument that this week s news seems not entirely coincidental, because Gadot is going to produce and star in a film called Meet Me in Another Life. Gadot s production company Pilot Wave snapped up the rights to the recent novel by Catriona Silvey extremely fast; the book was published this week on Tuesday, April 27th, and Gadot had the feature film rights to the book on the next day. Gal Gadot is a speed reader, apparently. As the title suggests, Meet Me in Another Life will tell the story of a romance between a man and a woman who continue to meet each other across time and reality, challenging them to figure out exactly why that keeps happening.7. FLORENCE PUGH TO STAR IN YET ANOTHER MOVIE WITH WONDER IN THE TITLE  (Photo by A24)In the last 10 years (or so), we ve had several films whose titles included some variation of the word wonder : To the Wonder (2012), The Incredible Burt Wonderstone (2013), Professor Marston and the Wonder Women (2017), Wonder (2017), Wonder Wheel (2017), Wonder Woman (2017), Wonderstruck (2017), Wonder Park (2019), Wonder Woman: Bloodlines (2019), Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), and Willy s Wonderland (2021). That s an impressive list, but you might notice none of them was THE Wonder, and actress Florence Pugh is about to correct that oversight, as she will star in an adaptation of the novel The Wonder by author Emma Donoghue (who also wrote Room). The film, to be directed by Sebastian Lelio (A Fantastic Woman) will tell the story of an English nurse (Pugh) who is summoned to a tiny Irish village in the 1850s to observe what the locals believe to be a miracle. Sounds wonderful, doesn t it?On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

5.62.2 6月喜迎(Photo by Courtesy of A24)Rotten Tomatoes’ “Essentials series will provide an in-depth look at one nominee or potential nominee from each of the major awards categories – the four acting categories, and directing – diving into their highest-rated work from both fans and critics, essential titles from their filmography, and featuring thoughts on their nominated film drawn from an extended interview. THE ACTOR: YOUN YUH-JUNG Unbothered might be the best word to describe Korean actress Youn Yuh-jung s attitude towards her first major American awards campaign. When we chatted with the veteran star, who is Oscar-nominated for her turn as an unconventional and hilarious grandmother in writer/director Lee Issac Chung s Minari, she seemed pleased but mostly unaffected by the Hollywood hype around the film her recent accolades, which total more than 50 awards for her supporting performance.  To tell you the truth, it s not that [different], she said during an extended Zoom chat, periodically pulling on an electric vape pen that would put Leonardo DiCaprio s to shame.  I approached it simply, I am myself a grandmother. It s nothing special. She certainly never saw the awards-season hoopla coming when she signed on to the film.  One of my dearest friends brought me the script – it was so very touching and authentic. After I read it, I called her back and asked, Is this based on a real-life story? She said, Yes. And I said, Okay, I ll do it.' And so it was that she joined the quiet immigrant tale, loosely based on Chung s formative years growing up on a farm in rural Arkansas, about the Yi family, led by father Jacob (Steven Yeun), which journeys from California to the South to pursue the dream of building their own farm. Of her decision to play Soonja – who is not the type of grandma the family s young son (Alan Kim) was expecting – Youn says, The people are what is important to me, not the script, not the fame, and not the money. Then she adds with a laugh: Well, not anymore. THE YOUN YUH-JUNG ESSENTIALS: HOW A CHANCE ENCOUNTER MADE A KOREAN MEGA STAR(Photo by Courtesy of IFC Films)If you ve seen her work in Minari, it s hard to believe that Youn never intended to act; her career began out of a chance encounter. Searching for a part-time job at a train station while studying at Seoul s Hanyang University, she was approached and asked to stand beside someone. He was a famous MC,  Youn recalls.  He asked if I could sit by him and hand presents to the audience. I did, and then they gave me a check for it! So that was great! She was surprised to learn how much could be made as a performer, and the next thing she knew she was going out for auditions. Then, in 1971, she was approached by director Kim Ki-young to star in what would become the second feature of his Housemaid trilogy, which had begun with 1960 s The Housemaid. The film, Woman of Fire, was, like its predecessor, a hit at home and abroad and catapulted Youn into stardom. We never expected anything like what happened. We never expected to have this world reception from the audience. When I took the job, I didn t even know he was a famous director in Korea.    She quickly followed up Woman of Fire with the title role in Jang Hui-bin, playing the infamous concubine for a Korean television mini-series that became a national phenomenon. With such a debut and streak of stellar work over 50 years, she s been dubbed The Korean Meryl Streep, a comparison she humbly rejects as unworthy praise. I wouldn t dare, Youn says. No, no, no. I mean, she s everything! Her art? Her work? No, no, no. But like the chameleon Streep, Youn has also found ways to re-invent herself over several decades, even while revisiting her older work, as she did in the 2010 Housemaid remake, a feat she quickly brushed aside with another joke: I thought that s very nice, me being in [the reboot] – and still being alive. THE COMEBACK: RECORD-BREAKING SERIES AND A DARING FILM ROLEThere was a period when Youn could not be seen on screens – when she immigrated to America in 1975, she took a 10-year hiatus from filmmaking. When she returned to full-time acting in 1985, she quickly racked up an impressive streak of television work, including Hur Jun, about 15th-century royal physician that broke viewership records with nearly 65% of the nation tuning in.Later, in 2002, she got the script for the film that would restart her silver screen work. Her role in Im Sang-soo s award-winning A Good Lawyer s Wife – full of sex and affairs and dysfunction – is the type of part actor s dream to play. Still, the then 50-ish mother of two hesitated at the time because, I wouldn t be dressed most of the film, I thought, I don t want to be half-naked with a bra. She added: But that s why most of the Korean actresses of that age turned down the role. But, to tell you the truth, I was remodeling my house, and I needed to work. Pragmatic and plain-spoken, Youn is practical about her career and its progression. I don t [map it out] ahead of time because planning things is when you know it s not going to be like that. So now I don t plan anything. If something happens, it happens, I will enjoy it; or, if I fail, that s my fault. (Photo by Courtesy of GEM Entertainment)By the time she starred in Actresses in 2009, Youn was once again one of the most recognizable faces in Korean entertainment, and the unscripted dramedy teamed her up with other premiere names of Korean stage and screen, including Kim Min-hee, who starred in Oldboy director Park Chan-wook Park’s period romantic thriller The Handmaiden. In the primarily improvised Actresses, each of the six actresses plays a fictionalized version of themselves as they prepare for a Korean Vogue photo shoot at a studio on Christmas Eve. Despite the pedigree and talent surrounding her, Youn says many of the actors felt uncomfortable with that level of improvisation and self-revelation. That was the first time we d done something like that in Korea, because we were all very famous. Some didn t want to talk about their private life but, as the oldest one, [I have] nothing to lose – so, I talked about my divorce and my private life. It is no wonder she felt okay with the mockumentary premise: A gathering over cocktails between director E J-yong, Youn, and actress Go Hyun-jung – the two actors have been friends for years – had inspired the idea for the movie, with the director wanting to show the public how charming the actresses were in real life. Spending an hour with Youn – even over Zoom and with not a cocktail in sight – we can see where the filmmaker was coming from.FAN FAVORITES: SENSE8, REALITY SHOW YOUN S KITCHEN, AND A SEXY THRILLERThe role that American audiences were most likely to know Youn for, pre-Minari, was in the Netflix series Sense8, which marked her first foray into American television. In the show, created by the Wachowski siblings, Youn played an inmate who helps one of the telepathic sensates escape from prison. She told us she was surprised to learn about the series global cult-like status and the massive internet fan campaign that prompted the streaming giant to approve one final episode to tie up loose ends when it was canceled after just two seasons. I didn t know that it was such a [big deal] until you mentioned it, Youn says. I m not good at the internet, as you could guess.”It was a small part with some big challenges: the very conceit of the show – where certain people on screen are seen in the minds of some characters, but are invisible to others – made the acting very difficult. They were supposed to be invisible to me. It was very distracting while also trying to concentrate on my lines. You wouldn t know that to watch her in the series; Youn s performance as the wise prisoner made a significant impression on fans, even within her limited screen time.Scripted television is not the only place that Youn has made an impression on the small screen; she is also somewhat of a reality TV star with two shows under her belt. A chance meeting with a famed reality show producer allowed her to join the travel show Sisters Over Flowers before she later did Youn s Kitchen, which featured different twists on traditional Korean dishes.(Photo by Courtesy of IFC films. ) The producer very sincerely chased me, but I told him I m not the right person to be in a reality show, Youn says. I m a very frank person. I would be terrible. However, recognizing that the actress s undeniable charisma is the stuff reality shows are made of, he did not take no for an answer. “We kept meeting each other, and then he kept saying You re going to do the show.’ I didn t realize that at the time, but if he wanted somebody, he could get them – and that s a skill. Youn s Kitchen was another success, with the cinema icon peeling back the layers of her life a bit to celebrate with friends and good food.2012 s The Taste of Money, in which she gives a deliciously evil performance as the matriarch of an über-rich family, peeled back the layers even further. A gender-bent twist on the Housemaid story, Money placed Youn s Baek Geum-ok as the domineering leader of the house and the usual female servant character reset as a handsome young male secretary. Dismissed by critics after its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, the steamy thriller raised more than a few eyebrows with its depictions of sex, greed, and corruption, and has gone on to enjoy a cult-like status.Regardless of how critics judged Money, Youn marks it as another memorable moment for different reasons – it again allowed her to be very vulnerable on screen while playing a part typically given to male characters. Yeah, I was getting naked over 60, my goodness, she says. Usually, it is the men who get power and use that for sex, but this time it was me, a woman, and I have to say I liked that. FRESHEST WORK: STEALING SCENES IN CELEBRATED IMMIGRANT TALE, MINARI(Photo by Courtesy of a24)How does Youn feel about the current spotlight on Korean cinema, Korean stories, and – during this awards season – her work and Oscar chances? It s all Bong Joon-ho s fault! she says, laughing as she casts the Oscar-winning Parasite director as the villain who has brought global attention to Korean cinema. I am glad I m not in Korea talking to reporters there, [they] like to count the chickens before they ve hatched. There s pressure on me because people are expecting me to win something. We used to watch the Oscars like they were in another world, but because of him everyone in Korea thinks they are in Hollywood now.” I know things have happened, she went on to say, but this [holding up her Rotten Tomatoes Certified Fresh trophy with a sly smile] is the only actor award that came to me in the mail. (We re glad to know our shipping folks are on it.) When we point out that more hardware is likely coming, she gives a slight shoulder shrug and explains that nothing could ever diminish or amplify her love and connection to the film and those that collaborated with her make it.(Photo by Courtesy of a24)This bond and family-like dynamic carried over to everyone on the Minari crew, but particularly the main cast who, due to the sweltering heat, would often congregate in the set that stood in for the interior of the characters trailer home. The conditions of the shoot were a crucible – this is not a cushy trailer shoot, she says, laughing. You re in the middle of Oklahoma heat. And after one day, I thought I need to go back home. I don t think I should be shooting in America. Luckily, she stayed, in part due to an extended visit from the very friend who handed her the script in the first place – a visit that was something of a mea culpa. When Youn learned Plan B, a company co-founded by Brad Pitt, was producing the project, she figured it could be a lucrative role and inquired about the budget. Her friend relayed the rate in Korean currency, quickly calculating 200 million South Korean won (roughly 5,000), but when she learned her fee would be nowhere near that, she briefly had second thoughts. However, after the friend promised to come visit the set for an extended period of time, the idea of suffering through it seemed more palatable. In thinking back on the shoot now, she is reverential about the experience. I think of my friend sacrificing her vacation to come along with me, about hiding out in the set trailer with Alan, Steven, and Yeri [Han, who plays her daughter] – one of the few locations with ample AC. My friend is an exceptional cook, so every night we gathered at my Airbnb – everyone did – because the food was incredible, and that s how we became a family. With such a foundation behind it, it s no wonder the world – and awards voters – fallen a little bit in love with film and everyone involved, especially the unconventional grandmother at its center.Minari is in theaters and available On Demand now.Download Rotten Tomatoes printable Oscar Ballot; cast your vote in our digital Oscar ballot. Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk director Barry Jenkins knew from the moment he read Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel The Underground Railroad that he had to turn it into a series. And to do it right, he brought on board some of his longtime (and multi-award-winning) collaborators — among them composer Nicholas Britell and Joi McMillon — and assembled a cast of new and veteran actors to breathe life into the story, including breakout star Thuso Mbedu, who plays escaped slave Cora in the series. Ahead of the series’ launch on Amazon Prime Video, Jenkins spoke with Rotten Tomatoes editor Jacqueline Coley about the challenges of moving from the world of film to television and of telling a story that blends magical-realism — the “underground railroad” here is an actual train system under the earth — with heartbreakingly real and violent scenes wrenched directly from the darkest pages of American history. Coley also speaks with Mbedu and costars Aaron Pierre, Sheila Atim, Joel Edgerton, and William Jackson Harper about the casting process, working with Jenkins, and the sensitivity and care taken to ensure everyone felt comfortable and safe on set, despite the often traumatic material. The Underground Railroad premieres Friday, May 14, on Amazon Prime Video.
It s worth noting that Angel of Darkness, while technically a sequel to the first season, works as its own standalone story. Brühl s Dr. Kreizler reunites with his rag-tag investigative cohorts Sara Howard (Dakota Fanning), now running her own detective agency, and New York Times journalist John Moore (Luke Evans) as they work to solve a string of baby murders amid a backdrop of political and cultural turmoil. The themes of women s rights, police brutality, and racism create a conflicted, yet timely, story here.Ahead of the show s return, Rotten Tomatoes spoke with Brühl about how his character has evolved since the series premiere, whether the show s disturbing subject matter gives him nightmares, how the themes explored in The Alienist: Angel of Darkness are relevant today, and if the COVID-19 shutdown delayed his work on The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.(Photo by TNT)Aaron Pruner for Rotten Tomatoes: This season focuses a lot on Sara Howard, while Kreizler is cultivating his own relationships. Has Kreizler, as a character, changed in how you interpret him since you first took on the role?Daniel Brühl: Knowing about Sara s psychological skills, Laszlo Kreizler is eventually willing to share power and to give in and to let Sarah Howard be in charge of that new mystery and of that new case. He becomes, emotionally, a more open-minded man thanks to the friendship with Sara and John and eventually even finds a kindred spirit, someone who he finds very fascinating. It s so interesting because my wife is an alienist in real life. And she told me that many times the most brilliant psychologists you know, become very nervous when they have to deal with, you know, their own introspection and their own inner life. So they may be brilliant in, you know, analyzing their environment, and yet, they have problems in expressing what they are going through. The theme of child murder continues in season 2. Is it tough to separate yourself from the dark subject matter of the show?Brühl: It didn t affect me that much when we were shooting the actual show, but watching it now gives me nightmares. I m the father of a little boy and expecting my second baby to arrive soon. The fact that this show this time around deals more with motherhood and fatherhood, respectively, felt more universal. It was also interesting to realize how engaged my wife was when she watched the show. She said that it resonated more with her than the first season.(Photo by Nelly Kiss/TNT)This is a period piece, yet the issues explored in the series continue to feel quite timely — women s rights, sensationalism in the news, police corruption, income inequality, and racism. What message are you hoping viewers will take away from watching?Brühl: It is very sad to see how long it takes for mankind to really make a change. It s funny how history goes in waves. I wouldn t say that it always goes in the wrong direction. Sometimes we advance, sometimes we evolve, and then, sometimes we go three steps back. So it is sadly fascinating to see that a story set in 1897 and a book written about that period that was published in the 1990s still feels so current. And what the story tells us is that it always takes a couple of courageous liberal modern minds to make a change. Unfortunately, mankind needs to have the worst things happen in order to move on. So the eruption that, fortunately, we witness these days internationally, due to the things that happened in the U.S., gives me a bit of optimism, because that avalanche, that eruption, and that message that racism has to stop, is being heard loudly and clearly at the moment. I hope that, finally, we will change and, hopefully, carry on doing so. We always have to hope that we will learn something from history.

SNUB: A Star Is Born (2018) 90% Shows Some Signs of Weakness(Photo by © Warner Bros. )Awards juggernaut A Star Is Born showed it was not as unstoppable as some might have thought. While it landed five nominations – one less than Vice, which earned the most of the morning, with six – they came mostly in absolute shoe-in categories, including for Best Actress and Actor in a Drama, Best Director, Best Film, and Best Original Song. The movie failed to fully flex its muscles, however, missing out on expected nominations for Best Screenplay, Best Score, and, as already noted, Best Supporting Actor for Sam Elliott.SNUB: Michelle Yeoh Misses out for Crazy Rich Asians (2018) 90%(Photo by © Sanja Bucko /© Warner Bros. Pictures)Crazy Rich Asians secured two nominations this morning, for Best Movie –Musical or Comedy and for star Constance Wu, but Michelle Yeoh, who plays the icy Eleanor Young in the smash rom-com, was shut out of the Best Supporting Actress category. Buzz had been building for her performance, and her Golden Globe chances, over the last few months, but we’re not giving up hope yet for her this awards season: Those who remember the film will know Eleanor may get left out in the rain at times, but she rarely stays there.SURPRISE: Lucas Hedges Scores a Best Actor – Drama Nomination for Boy Erased (2018) 80%(Photo by © Focus Features )Did anyone see this coming? We didn’t. But we’re not arguing with it: Hedges is excellent as the college student forced into conversion therapy by his parents in Joel Edgerton’s Boy Erased, and his nomination should direct some needed awards-season attention to the film, which failed to score nominations for Best Film – Drama, or for Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe, who had chances in the supporting acting categories.SNUB: Mary Queen of Scots (2018) 62% Will Take No Crowns(Photo by © Focus Features)On paper, Mary Queen of Scots looked a sure bet to be a big awards-season player: Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie, lavish costumes, familial rivalry. And, in a rare and widely celebrated move, colorblind casting for a British period drama! The movie’s first real test came this morning and it didn’t quite make the grade, landing zero nominations. The biggest surprise was perhaps seeing Ronan and Robbie left out of the acting categories — especially Ronan, who many critics say carries the film as the titular monarch.TVSURPRISE: The Kominsky Method 93% Dominates(Photo by Mike Yarish/Netflix)Netflix just released its new series about Kominsky (Michael Douglas), a former star looking for a comeback, and his longtime agent (Alan Arkin) in November. The series is Certified Fresh with a relatively modest 78% on the Tomatometer, but scored three nominations: Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy; Douglas for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy; and Arkin for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. Say what you may about the HFPA’s Golden Globes – the organization is fiercely loyal to big stars.SNUB: Issa Rae for Insecure 96%(Photo by HBO)Perhaps it is less surprising that Rae was excluded from the Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy category nominations than the fact that Candice Bergen was nominated for the critically panned Murphy Brown revival, which has a 43% Tomatometer score. Meanwhile, Insecure’s third season is Certified Fresh at 95%. We re calling it a snub.SURPRISE: Nearly Every Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama Nominee(Photo by Patrick Harbron/FX)We expected Matthew Rhys’ nomination – the final season of critical favorite The Americans was bound to get some love. But we did not anticipate the other nominees in the category for different reasons: Jason Bateman, Ozark (the buzz around the series has died down); Stephan James, Homecoming (a nice surprise to have young James in the mix given the veterans of the category – see “Snub: This Is Us”); Richard Madden, Bodyguard (perhaps should not have come as a surprise given that the HFPA famously rewards international stars); and Billy Porter, Pose (Porter certainly gave a standout performance in the series and it’s nice to see him recognized). Which leads us to our next point…SNUB: J.K. Simmons for Counterpart 100%(Photo by Starz)Simmons plays two roles in the Starz spy series: one as low-level bureaucrat Howard Silk who discovers the government agency he works for is a cover for a portal to an alternate universe and, two, his aggro alt-universe counterpart. The first season of the series, created by The Jungle Book screenwriter Justin Marks, was Certified Fresh at a rare 100% and season 2, premiering Sunday, currently also stands at 100%. Simmons was expected to make an appearance in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama category.SURPRISE: Kieran Culkin for Succession 93%(Photo by Ursula Coyote/HBO)That Culkin deserved the nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television is not in question – the actor has been widely hailed for his performance in the HBO drama about a Murdoch-like clan grappling for control of the family empire. That he would supplant the likes of Joseph Fiennes in awards favorite The Handmaid s Tale or Atlanta standout Brian Tyree Henry is the surprise here.SNUB: This Is Us 93%(Photo by NBC)Sterling K. Brown? Milo Ventimiglia? The two This Is Us stars are awards favorites and their exclusion from the Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama category is startling. Surely the series was worth a Best Television Series – Drama nomination? No? Shocking!SURPRISE: Connie Britton in Dirty John 80%(Photo by Bravo)The Bravo series, based on the real-life story of conman John Meehan (played by Eric Bana) and his mark (Britton as Debra Newell), has generated moderate buzz, but here at Rotten Tomatoes, a series that scores only 64% on the Tomatometer doesn’t immediately suggest award nods. Britton’s nomination in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for the series comes as a surprise.SNUB: Ted Danson in The Good Place 97%(Photo by Colleen Hayes/NBC)Another in the 100% club, with two seasons Certified Fresh at 100%, the NBC series has dominated RT’s seasonal scorecards every season it has aired. And with Danson’s costar Kristen Bell nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy, his exclusion from the Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy category comes as a surprise.SURPRISE: The Alienist 77%(Photo by TNT)Again, a 65% Tomatometer score doesn’t suggest awards are forthcoming for a series, but the TNT crime drama based on Caleb Carr’s novels has surprised us all with Best Limited Series nomination and, for star Daniel Brühl, a Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television nomination. It was a series that built buzz as more episodes aired.SNUB: Atlanta 97% and GLOW 92%(Photo by Matthias Clamer/FX)Out with the old? Jim Carrey’s Showtime comedy Kidding and Netflix series The Kominsky Method got the nominations for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy instead.Snubbish: Maniac 84%The Limited Series nominations left out hipster-fabulous Netflix series Maniac and its stars Jonah Hill and Emma Stone. After All. That. Hype.Film Snubs and Surprises | TV Snubs and Surprises

Join us weekly as Rotten Tomatoes reports on what s opening, expanding, and coming to the specialty box office. From promising releases from new voices to experimental efforts from storied filmmakers – or perhaps the next indie darling to go the distance for end-of-year accolades – we will break it all down for you here each week in Fresh Indie Finds. This week at the specialty box office, we have a tragic tale of female perseverance in post-WWII Russia, a based-on-true-events mob flick, and a tense drama inspired by the Harvey Weinstein sex scandal. In our spotlight section, we highlight Jojo Rabbit s triumphant return to theaters, and in our indie trailer section, we have new clips from K.J. Apa, Britt Robertson, and writer-director Eliza Hittman.Opening This Weekend

King of the Crop: Aquaman On Top For Third Weekend, Eyes Global BillionJoel MearesAquaman is not going anywhere. Not at least until Glass dethrones what should be a four-week run atop the box office on January 18. The last film to do that was Black Panther. While Aquaman won’t quite reach the heights of last year’s box office champion, it is fixing to do something that not Batman, Superman, nor even Wonder Woman could do in DC’s extended universe. For the first time since Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight films, a DC property is going to reach the billion mark worldwide. Aquaman is the sixth-highest grossing film ever in December after 17 days and is looking at a final domestic gross somewhere in between Peter Jackson’s The Two Towers (9 million) and The Return of the King (7 million.) James Wan’s film had a better third weekend (and first week of January) than either of those films, and its international total currently stands at 0 million. Not only will it be the fifth film released in 2018 to cross the billion dollar mark, but it will be the fifth film in Warner Bros. history to do it after the final Harry Potter chapter, the two Dark Knight sequels, and the first Hobbit film. The Rest of the Top 10 and Beyond: Escape Room Manages a Break Out(Photo by @ Sony)Sony went a little Blumhouse on us this weekend with the low-budget and respectable opening of Escape Room. Critics weren t too harsh on the million production – especially for a horror flick released in January – giving it a 53% on the Tomatometer, and it grossed million this weekend. That puts it in between 2010 s Legion and 2004 s The Butterfly Effect for January horror openings. Audience response  suggests it could fall in the same final range of those films, between million and million. Sony’s success continues with Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse which will be heading into profit soon with a final estimate that continues to rise; the film now looks to finish with around 2 million. But on the other end of the spectrum for Sony, Holmes Watson is proving to be a real embarrassment. It could become just the second film to open on Christmas Day with more than million and not reach million. Holmes Watson’s had a million production budget and has currently earned .4 million.Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns is still hoping to forge a path to clear 0 million. As of now it should have no problem passing comparable past December opener Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows’ 6 million, but it is going to need some solid daily holds to maintain the pace of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, which opened mid December in 2011 and finished with 9 million. Ralph Breaks the Internet has a clearer path to the milestone, likely finishing somewhere between 0 and 5 million. However, with an international total of just 7.6 million to date, Ralph is still well in the red for Disney.(Photo by @ Paramount Pictures)In a few days, Bumblebee will become the 33rd film released in 2018 to reach 0 million. It is still million behind Transformers: The Last Knight’s pace overall, but posted nearly twice as much in its third weekend as that film, so there is still hope that the best-reviewed (and only Fresh) Transformers film will not have the lowest-grossing domestic run of the series. There is also some good news for Clint Eastwood’s The Mule. Only one December film has ever reached million in its first 24 days and not finished with over 0 million; that was WB’s 2008 film, Yes Man, with Jim Carrey (.6 million). The Mule, which has not yet opened outside the U.S., will need roughly million internationally to get into the black for the studio. In limited release, Destroyer led this week’s per-theater-average with ,335 in six theaters, followed by Cold War (,500 on the same number of screens) for totals of 0,012 and ,000, respectively. Focus’ On the Basis of Sex expanded into 112 theaters and grossed .67 million, a ,920 average per screen. Then there was Stan Ollie with a ,022 average in eight theaters. Also expanding were Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk, now in 335 theaters, and Mary Queen of Scots, which added 211 theaters for a total of 1,052. They grossed .84 and .2 million, respectively. The Favourite also continues to chug along adding .97 million for a total gross of .3 million. This Time Last Year: Jumanji Finally Beats out The Last Jedi(Photo by @ Columbia Pictures)© Marvel / © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures /Courtesy Everett Collection2018 kicked off with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle celebrating a box office victory in its third week, but Insidious: The Last Key was no slouch either with a .5 million start for second place. The Post and Phantom Thread continued to lead the per-theater-average list in limited release with ,167 and ,040 per screen, respectively. The top 10 grossed a total of 4.1 million and scored an average of 69.9% on the Tomatometer. This year’s top 10 grossed an estimated 8.1 million and averaged 64.8% on the Tomatometer. On the Vine: Kevin Hart and Keanu Reeves In Two Long-Delayed Films(Photo by © STX Entertainment)Two long-delayed projects go up against a puppy next week, even as one is expected to be a dog. The Upside, starring Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart, premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in 2017 when it was owned by the Weinstein Co. A few scandals later and STX is now finally releasing the remake of 2012 s The Intouchables, one of the most successful films of all time in France. It will go up against Keanu Reeves in the sci-fi clone film, Replicas, which was filmed back in 2016 and is likely to arrive with a thud. Then Charles Martin Smith, the actor-turned-director who helmed Air Bud and the Dolphin Tale films, brings us A Dog’s Way Home, not to be confused with 2017’s A Dog’s Purpose, nor its 2019 sequel, A Dog’s Journey. Finally, On the Basis of Sex expands nationwide. The Full Top 10: January 4-6Aquaman  .7 million (9.7 million total)Escape Room – million ( million total)Mary Poppins Returns  .8 (8.7 million total)Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse– million (3.9 million total)Bumblebee – .8 million (.1 million total)The Mule – million (.1 million total)Vice – .8 million (.8 million total)Second Act  .9 million (.9 million total)Ralph Breaks the Internet – .7 million (7.2 million total)Holmes Watson – .4 million (.4 million total)
