火炬之光2漂泊者双枪采用百度引擎3(Baidu 7)As more and more people are compelled to practice social distancing and encouraged to stay home, as movie theaters temporarily shutter their doors, and as studios continue to pull their scheduled 2020 films off the release calendar, we ve decided to reformat this weekly Critics Consensus column to focus on titles that are newly available on the home entertainment market. With that in mind, our list of digital new releases this week includes a trio of thrillers one about an insidious vacation destination, one about deep-sea terror, and one about a fledgling vigilante on the warpath. See below for the full list.

1. 火炬之光2漂泊者双枪

HER NOLAN, AND THE WITCHES REMAKE(Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/Paramount Pictures)For obvious calendar-related reasons, January is often a time when we see a lot of big future release dates. Although we know nothing else about it, the biggest reveal of this batch is the next film from director Christopher Nolan: IMAX on July 17, 2020, up against the Bob s Burgers movie and The Spongebob Movie: It s a Wonderful Sponge. A week earlier, on July 10, 2020, we ll get Ghostbusters 3, the direct sequel to the first two films, rumored to feature new teenage Ghostbusters. Later that month, on July 31, 2020, Sony has scheduled the Marvel s Morbius, the vampire antihero movie starring Jared Leto and Doctor Who star Matt Smith. Earlier in that year, May 8 will be the new release date for Greyhound, a World War II naval drama starring Tom Hanks, a date also claimed by Reese Witherspoon s Legally Blonde 3. January 3, 2020 will be the new release date for the reboot of The Grudge (which had previously been scheduled for this summer). Later in 2020, we ll also have the remake of The Witches (10/16/2020), starring Anne Hathaway in the role originally played by Anjelica Huston. 4. ZENDAYA AND OSCAR ISAAC ARE THE LATEST STARS JOINING THE DUNE REBOOT(Photo by Lev Radin/Everett Collection)Frank Herbert s classic science fiction novel Dune features a massive ensemble cast of characters, and so we re in the midst of what will be several weeks of role announcements. To date, we ve already heard about Timothée Chalamet in the lead role as Paul Atreides, as well as Rebecca Ferguson (as Lady Jessica), Charlotte Rampling (as Reverend Mother Mohiam), Stellan Skarsgård (as Baron Harkonnen), and Dave Bautista (as The Beast Rabban). This week, we can now add to the mix Spider-Man: Homecoming costar Zendaya, who is in early talks to play Chalamet s romantic interest, Chani. Oscar Isaac, who is coming off playing Poe Dameron in Star Wars: The Force Awaken, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and this December s Star Wars Episode IX, is in talks to play Duke Leto Atreides.  5. THREE RECENT ACADEMY AWARD WINNERS JOIN THE HEART (Photo by Fox Searchlight courtesy Everett Collection)In addition to playing Dean Pelton on Community, Jim Rash is also a writer and director who with his partner Nat Faxon has previously worked on The Descendants and The Way Way Back. For their next film, The Heart, Rash and Faxon are arguably stacking the deck by recruiting three recent Academy Award winners: Allison Janney, who won a Supporting Actress Oscar last year for I, Tonya; Octavia Spencer, who won in that category for 2012 s The Help; and Sam Rockwell also won last year for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Rockwell and Spencer will play people desperate for cash who agree to courier a black market human heart in what they soon discover is a very dangerous job. Janney plays Spencer s antagonist ex-boss. In related news, there are also now rumors that Janney and Rockwell may not be asked to present Academy Awards this year, as is often the tradition in the acting categories.6. THIS WEEK IN ZOMBIELAND: ROSARIO DAWSON JOINS SEQUEL, WOODY GOES FRUIT LOOPS (Photo by Glen Wilson/Columbia courtesy Everett Collection)Everything was awesome for Sony Pictures in 2018, and the studio is keeping this swinging with the Zombieland: Double Tap (10/11/2019) poster reveal, presented as a play on the social media 10 year challenge. That poster also showed off that all four Zombieland stars (Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, and Abigail Breslin) are returning. We also learned this week that they will be joined by Rosario Dawson. Harrelson also made a new deal recently to star in the Fox 2000 drama Fruit Loops, which is described as a psychiatric hospital drama in the style of One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest. Fruit Loops will be directed by Ted Melfi (Hidden Figures, St. Vincent), who also this week set up a new sci-fi project called Harry s All Night Hamburgers. 7. THE INVISIBLE MAN REBOOT IS HAPPENING AFTER ALL, BUT JOHNNY DEPP S DISAPPEAREDIn the months and weeks leading up to the 2017 release of The Mummy, Universal Pictures did a lot of press about how that reboot was going to lead to the Dark Universe cinematic universe, featuring classic Universal Monsters like Bride of Frankenstein and The Wolfman. The box office disappointment of The Mummy quickly led to the Dark Universe plans being dismantled, but we learned this week that some Universal Monsters will still get their reboot movies after all. In the Dark Universe plan, Johnny Depp was to have played The Invisible Man, but that movie is now moving forward without Depp. Instead, The Invisible Man is now being rebooted by Upgrade director Leigh Whannell at Blumhouse. The shift to Blumhouse for The Invisible Man (and possibly other Universal Monsters) is being perceived as a smart move, considering how Blumhouse has been able to deliver successful franchises like Insidious, Ouija, Paranormal Activity, and The Purge. 8. CAPTAIN MARVEL STAR BRIE LARSON STARTING A LADY BUSINESS AT NETFLIX(Photo by Claire Folger/Paramount Pictures)Just as Captain Marvel prepares to release March 8, Brie Larson is setting up at least one new project at Netflix, which is also where her directorial debut called Unicorn Store (debuting April 5) landed. Larson will star in and direct Lady Business, based upon the true stories of Witchsy founders Kate Dwyer and Penelope Gazin. Lady Business will tell the story of two female entrepreneurs who invent a third male company founder in order to be taken seriously in the business world.  Rotten Idea1. PIKA-TWO: POKÉMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU ALREADY GETTING SEQUEL?(Photo by Warner Bros.)The videogame adaptation Pokémon Detective Pikachu (5/10/2019) is still over three months away, so we have no idea if it s going to be the big movie that breaks the Rotten curse of video game movies. After 25 years and nearly 50 Rotten video game movies, it s probably safe to be skeptical about all upcoming releases. This week, Warner Bros. revealed that they re already starting development on a Detective Pikachu sequel. The studio is doing that by hiring screenwriter Oren Uziel (The Cloverfield Paradox, co-writer of 22 Jump Street) to work on it. Other upcoming films Uziel has worked on include Sonic the Hedgehog (11/8/2019), Supergirl, and the Mortal Kombat reboot.火炬之光2漂泊者双枪eople together to create something and then shift them all around the world? And what do you do with actors that are in a love scene? It’s complicated.” In related news, the biopic Going Electric, starring Timothee Chalamet as Bob Dylan, is also on hold due to the pandemic because it was to have been filmed all in small clubs with lots of extras in period costumes, so you’ve got lots of hair and makeup.”9. GUARDIAN OF THE GALAXY DAVE BAUTISTA IS ALSO UNIVERSE S MOST WANTED (Photo by ©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)We still don t when exactly director James Gunn and Marvel Studios will be able to reunite again for a third Guardians of the Galaxy (definitely don t expect it before 2023), but one of that film s stars is striking out on his own in a new sci-fi fantasy. Dave Bautista (A.K.A. Drax) will produce and star in an ambitious sci-fi action movie called Universe s Most Wanted, in which he will play an intergalactic peacekeeper who teams up with the son of a small town sheriff when a spaceship carrying the universe’s most wanted and dangerous criminals crash lands in their backyard. If that premise sounds familiar, that may be because it is extremely similar to the 1986 sci-fi cult favorite Critters, except, of course, the aliens in Universe s Most Wanted will probably be very different. Universe s Most Wanted will be directed by Brad Peyton, who has previously worked three times with one of Dave Bautista s former wrestling co-stars, Dwayne Johnson, on Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (Rotten at 45%), San Andreas (Rotten at 50%), and the video game movie Rampage (51%, Peyton s highest RT score). On an Apple device?
Though Marvel Entertainment’s television division did a great job bringing aspects of the Marvel universe to the small screen with shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Daredevil, the early promise of clear connections back to the films never really materialized. Beyond S.H.I.E.L.D. using the twist from Captain America: The Winter Soldier in its first season to change the nature of the show, the programs rarely made mention of film events and never featured appearances from the movies’ title characters (or vice-versa).But that is about to change. Marvel Studios now controls television projects directly. And the first series under this new arrangement, WandaVision, is set to debut on January 15, 2021, and unlike Runaways or Cloak Dagger, it stars marquee Avengers in a story with deep ties to the events of the films.Despite Marvel Studios’ well-known cone of secrecy, we know a few things about the project. So let’s take a look at those details and try to guess how Marvel will change the face of its TV universe with WandaVision.[Updated on 11/12/20]It Stars Scarlet Witch And Vision, And More From the MCU(Photo by Marvel Studios/Disney+)Click image to see full poster in a new tab. The most obvious connection to the films is right in the name: it stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff (a.k.a. the Scarlet Witch) and Paul Bettany as Vision. The latter character was seemingly killed in the final reel of Avengers: Infinity War, so the series starts with a question: Is Vision alive? In fact, the question forms a key part of the trailer Disney+ released during the 2020 Emmy Awards. The program will also feature Kathryn Hahn as Agnes – more on that in a moment – and see the return of Thor’s Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis and Ant-Man and the Wasp’s Randall Park as FBI Agent Jimmy Woo. The series will also feature another returning Marvel Cinematic Universe figure in a new form: Teyonah Parris will star as a grown-up version of Monica Rambeau, the character played by child actor Akira Akbar in Captain Marvel. That mixture of talent is, in its own way, quite eclectic and telling of what the show might be. Parris’s Rambeau is consistent with a contemporary setting, while the return of Darcy and Woo suggest Wanda’s new adventure has some government intrigue. But perhaps the setting is something we should consider on its own.It Counts As A Phase 4 MCU Tale(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Unlike the previous Marvel TV efforts, WandaVision is part of the MCU’s “Phase” calendar system. As Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige revealed at the company’s 2019 Comic-Con International: San Diego presentation, the series is part of Phase 4, which counts the feature films released from next year’s Black Widow to 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which will feature Olsen as the Scarlet Witch. Phase 4 will also include the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, and the animated series What If..!? – although the canonicity of that last series is up for debate as it will tell alternative versions of established MCU history.Curiously, WandaVision leapfrogged The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in September with Disney+ featuring the former in a late 2020 sizzle reel video and the recent trailer. Falcon, one of the few series to resume production after the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, is said to have slid into a 2021 launch window after missing its original August release plan. That switch suggests both series may have a certain flexibility in what overarching Phase 4 information they contain although, in a recent EW interview, Feige said close MCU watchers will find a wealth of rewards waiting for you as it all unfolds. At the very least, events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier have little-to-no impact on WandaVision, even if both programs set up something for the larger world. In previous interviews, Feige said WandaVision – set after the events of Avengers: Endgame – will have a far-reaching impact on Phase 4 and establish the Scarlet Witch name. With that time frame in mind, we know Vision is definitely dead from our point of view. So is Wanda using the healing power of laughter to cope with the loss? It’s Also A Family Sitcom(!?)Ryan FujitaniThe few glimpses Marvel and Disney+ have offered look like a pastiche of family sitcoms from different eras. Indeed, even the first info about the series at last year’s D23 Expo featured a soundbite from The Dick Van Dyke Show. Subsequent trailers saw Wanda transforming from a black-and-white 1950s housewife into an updated version of the archetype across the rest of the 20th century. The recent trailer even makes a meal out of the arrival of color.During that D23 presentation, Feige and showrunner Jac Schaeffer alluded to the series having a different feel and look – and few things are further from the Marvel Studios house style than a three-camera sitcom. At the very least, though, it gives fans the chance to see Olsen and Bettany in comic-book–accurate Scarlet Witch and Vision costumes. For his part, Bettany said the story is so funny and it just ends up being this huge epic. According to the recent EW interview, the series will begin with Wanda and Vision moving to the black-and-white town of Westview. Their home may look like Rob and Laura’s dwelling from The Dick Van Dyke Show, but the couples’ dilemma is straight out of Bewitched – Wanda must hide her witchy powers and Vision’s synthetic nature from the community. These very 1950s sitcom scenes were even filmed before an actual studio audience. But as Wanda and Vis re-run through the sitcoms of subsequent decades, it becomes clear Westview is not a generic TV town.If we might speculate for a moment, the use of American family sitcom tropes feels right for the character. Considering Wanda was raised in relative isolation alongside her brother Pietro in a Hydra facility, it is entirely possible her notion of a normal family life was informed by watching American sitcoms. As it happens, these sorts of shows were regularly exported across the world in our reality, giving the notion of a Leave It to Beaver nuclear family purchase in real-life Sokovians. Alternatively, Hydra may have been trying to show Wanda what they sought to destroy. Either way, it is clear Wanda is trying to create a family unit of her own using whatever ideas and means available to her.Unless, as the trailer suggests near its end, this is all Vision s doing And It s About Grief(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios)The Scarlet Witch of Marvel Comics fame is known for being so powerful that she can alter reality to remove mutants from the world or will children into existence. Though the MCU Wanda has yet to exhibit such an ability, her powers originate from the Infinity Stones and may be strong enough to transport her into various sitcom realities. In fact, a moment late in the trailer sees Monica Rambeau seemingly ejected from a sunny world into a park lit by artificial means. But why would Wanda do all of this? To mourn Vision’s passing, of course. Or, perhaps, to find a way to bring him back.Though rooted in sitcom iconography, the series also appears to be taking several cues from Tom King and Gabriel Hernandez Walta’s Vision comic book miniseries; the writer even suggested as much at a 2019 New York Comic Con panel. In that story, Vision was himself trying to find domestic bliss by building an android family. Virginia, the wife model, had a brain pattern modeled after Wanda and … well, let’s just say things ended badly. Besides her power, comic book Wanda also suffers from various mental illnesses and can be her own worst enemy.Ryan FujitaniFrom the recent interview, we also know the series is inspired, in part, by some very specific Scarlet Witch stories Olsen read before filming 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. If these stories include the time she used magic to have children with Vision or when she changed all of reality to restore their existences – they disappeared when it turned out they were aspects of the demon Mephisto – it is easy to see how Wanda’s ongoing grief might lead to her conjuring a new world to live in.Combining those strands, it is entirely possible the series will be set in the sitcom world and the MCU. In the trailer, Kathryn Hahn is seen as the “nosy neighbor in the 1950s sitcom reality, but her later appearance in the seemingly modern world may be an attempt to wake up Wanda or Vision. If he s still dead, then this version of him may part of her own consciousness. And a powerful but disassociated Scarlet Witch would be a good reason to bring in Monica and Jimmy Woo, who may or may not be a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, into the mix. Then again, there’s another Marvel organization acronym we might be seeing. It Will Introduce S.W.O.R.D. Into The MCU(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios)If certain cast lists are to be believed, we will see S.W.O.R.D. agents at some point in the series. The organization debuted in the pages of Marvel Comics back in 2004 as the space-based version of S.H.I.E.L.D., defending Earth from alien incursion or subversion. And if you consider the space fleet Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) was assembling in the Spider-Man: Far From Home stinger scene, it would seem S.W.O.R.D. has been in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for quite some time. Perhaps Fury’s been building the group since he went off the grid in Winter Soldier. Alternatively, it may be something he whipped together with Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) in the time since Endgame. Either way, it is easy to see why Wanda’s power would be valuable to him and to S.W.O.R.D.And from the trailer, its clear some organization with deep resources is keeping tabs on whatever is happening to Wanda and Vision. It’s Set To Be A Winter Treat, And Will Likely Last Just One SeasonRyan FujitaniThough always intended to run after The Falcon and the Winter Solider, WandaVision held to a late 2020/early 2021 launch for much of its development, with it officially premiering on Disney+ on January 15, 2021. Thanks to the September sizzle reel and the subsequent trailer, we fully expected it to take The Mandalorian’s place as your must-watch streaming program after the Star Wars series concludes December 18. But it seems the real-life pressures of making a television series pushed the program s debut into the new year. Considering the much longer delays for Black Widow and Eternals, a handful of weeks isn t too much longer to wait.Like The Mandalorian and other Disney+ originals, the series will stream weekly. Consisting of six episodes, it is also expected to be the only season of WandaVision. Indeed, all of the Phase 4 Disney+ shows were initially pitched as limited series. We assume the format made it more attractive to the actors, who would know from the get-go there would be no long-term commitments to a television show. Then again, with the Phase 5 shows like She-Hulk being pitched as more traditional, multi-season ideas – and with the Loki series reportedly revving up for a second year – it is always possible WandaVision will return. Maybe she’ll transport herself and Vision to cop shows next time. You know you want to see Vision with a greasy comb-over.

(Photo by © Universal)The National Board of Review (NBR) has announced its picks for the best films of 2018. An organization made up of film enthusiasts, industry professionals, academics, and filmmakers, the NBR s is one of the first winners lists announced in 2018, quickly following Monday night s Gotham Awards. Breaking from The Gothams and The Independent Spirit Awards smaller film focus, the National Board Review voting body favored studio awards features, with A Star is Born and Green Book sweeping the top categories – the latter was voted the Best Film of 2018. Last year, The Post swept the top awards categories but was shut out come Oscar night. Additionally, big winners The Shape of Water and Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri were omitted entirely from the NBR picks, so exercise caution in placing too much stock in today s list for Oscar indictions. The full list of winners are below.Best Feature
Jean Bentley for Rotten Tomatoes: In the first few episodes, your character is the hardest to get a read on because he’s been so affected by what his dad did.Tom Payne: Actually at the beginning, certainly when we shot the pilot, that was the biggest task for me: Where is the center of this character? What is it? And obviously because we were doing the pilot as well, we were throwing a lot of ideas around — a lot of things which didn t end up in the show in the end. It took me a while to settle into it, and even watching it now, he s a difficult character to pin down. But that s because there is so much going on and he s a bit of a wild card at the moment. He has different relationships with everyone.I think in the time that he was away from New York, he established a certain way of behaving and being, but in coming back to New York and reconnecting with his father, it s really lit a few different fuses inside of him, and he s a lot more wayward again, and he doesn t know who he s going to be from one moment to the next. And that s quite difficult to play because you want to have precision about what you re doing. But, at the same time, I kind of have to play it moment to moment, really. You have to push the boundaries of who the character is because it is extreme. And at the end of the day, it s also entertainment. So it s entertaining to watch a character who you don t know what s going to happen next.In the pilot we were talking about characters like Riggs in Lethal Weapon, who is just unpredictable and scary at the same time, and you don t know what s going to happen. I enjoyed that side of it. He should be unpredictable, but also, at the same time, you want to give him a hug, really, and make sure he s OK.This guy just needs so many hugs.Basically.This is a darker drama for network TV, and it also plays into pop culture’s current obsession with true crime. Would you agree?Payne: There s a lot of deep, dark psychology involved in this show. And actually, for me, even, it raised this question that I hadn t even thought about, which was about the families of the people who commit these crimes. There was a podcast called Happy Face that I listened to, which followed the daughter of a serial killer in interviews that she did with relatives of her father s victims. It really affected me because it s so emotionally scarring to have a relative who s done this — and such a close relative. It s a dark place to go to, and it s going to bring up all sorts of questions about your own inclinations and feelings, and how everyone else feels towards you and that which you have no control over. That’s in the center of our story: Malcolm changed his last name and moved away to get away from all those things. And now, he s come back to New York and dived straight into the middle of all of it again — which is why he s somewhat wayward in our story right now. There s a huge prevalence of those kinds of stories and a lot of interest in that. And in the show, we try and get into the real family psychology of the situations, and how everyone else is affected by one person s actions. What was it like going from The Walking Dead to this? They’re both heavy shows.Payne: In The Walking Dead, they re obviously not real — zombies don t exist in the real world and it s not something that happens. So there is still a fantasy aspect in that. In Prodigal Son, that stuff happens, and there are people who are related to serial killers and there are serial killers. So actually, this show was a bit more disturbing to delve into and to get involved with.It s really heavy. You start to read and do research and get into all of this. And just me, personally, it s hard to get to the bottom of why people do these things. The character in the show is just much more closely connected to the story than I am. The hardest thing about it is the fact that he s related to the serial killer. He has this job where he investigates serial killers, but it s much deeper than that because it raises questions about human nature, and the character himself, and what triggered his father — at what age did he start doing these things? — and if it could possibly happen to him or his sister.(Photo by David Giesbrecht/FOX)Twist for season 2! There’s also a procedural aspect to the show. What can you say about the cases they re solving on a week-to-week basis?Payne: As far as Malcolm s concerned, he’s excited because he s always intrigued, and he wants to understand and get to the bottom of why these people do the things that they do. Each serial killer is a new adventure for him really and each crime scene is another puzzle to solve. And then it comes back to him having a deeper understanding of the whole world of killers and their motivations, and it s another box to tick, really, for himself and his own brain. He can say, Well, I don t have that inclination, so I can tick that off the list. That s not me. But there are aspects of each case which provide a deeper understanding of his own psychology and what might may have triggered his dad. Because at the bottom of it, he s just trying to get to the core of why these people do the things they do.At the end of the day he just wants a hug from his dad and he wants to be able to understand him, so that in some way, he can forgive him and treat him as a human being and he can connect with that. It s very difficult to connect with this monster, this vision of his father that everyone else has, because he was too young to really comprehend what was happening when it happened. He has hearsay and stories and books about what his father did. It s become this much bigger bogeyman.Do you have a favorite case they re investigating so far? Episode two has snakes and it was a lot of fun to watch.Payne: That was super fun. That crime scene was really cool. Each week is a new and exciting killer, which is lots of fun to play with they re exciting for the character — it s nice to play that kind of weird, off-kilter excitement in those scenes.(Photo by David Giesbrecht/FOX)Malcolm has a very complicated relationship with his father, but he has a positive relationship with Lou Diamond Phillips’ Det. Gil Arroyo, his mentor and father figure and now supervisor at the NYPD. He also has his mother, Jessica (Bellamy Young). What’s it like for Malcolm to have those conflicting parental role models?Payne: He s an example of how you would think a father should be, and he s very protective of [Malcolm] and his psychological well-being. That s a nice comfort zone for Malcolm to have, because he has a relationship certainly with his mother and now his father, but they re both distant in different ways. His mother and that relationship develops as the show goes on.They’re not huggers in that family. I come from England, which can be a lot like that as well, so you might want to have that emotional conversation with your parents, but it s never quite going to happen in the way that you would like it to. So the relationships for Malcolm are quite emotionally strained. For his relationship with Lou and Michael s characters, it s difficult because Lou is there and is providing all of this warmth and lovingness and protective energy. But his dad is still around. His actual biological dad is still there, and he remembers him as this wonderful dad. His memories of his father are as this wonderful person, and they went on trips together, and he taught him so many things, and he was great. And then he became this other thing. That s really what Malcolm s trying to deal with: He wants that relationship back, but it will never be what it was. We grow up and realize that our parents are human beings and have made mistakes and done bad things and done great things. It just so happens that in Malcolm s life, his father has done things which you can never be forgiven for.Prodigal Son airs Mondays at 9 p.m. on Fox.Like this? “It was one specific panel in Marvel Spotlight #13 where Daimon is reading his mother s journal, and he s in his full-on cape and bare chest with the pentagram and everything,” he recalled. “And he s crying because he s reading the story of his mother and how the mother met the father and sort of who the father really is … and that s a lot of emotion. That s a lot of baggage.”Zbyszewski, growing up in the Catholic tradition while reading the early Helstrom appearances, became enamored with the baggage.“This was a very emotional story about a couple of kids who had the worst dad ever,” he said. Plus, the thrill of reading about the son of Satan offered his comic book diet a sense of the taboo and danger. “You go, ‘Ooh, that s dark.’ And then when you pick it up and you re a little bit older, you re like, ‘Oh, OK. I kind of see this [emotional tale].’”The sense of cool and the family underpinnings made Helstrom a must-make concept.2. Helstrom Is An Unlikely Family Drama(Photo by Katie Yu/Hulu)Though the series begins with Daimon (Tom Austen) and Ana (Satana renamed for television) having spent years apart and estranged, the show leans into the notion of family very quickly thanks to the unique dynamic between Ana (Sydney Lemmon) and Chris Yen (Alain Uy).“[My] chosen family is Chris Yen,  Lemmon said during our time in Vancouver. We met in the foster care system and just fused and became best friends. [He] became almost more of a brother to me than Daimon and then down the road, business partners.”Chris and Ana are introduced with a peek at their lavish life, including San Francisco apartments and a thriving antiquities dealership. To Uy, that clean, ordered world is the best place for Chris. The character is “a very in-control type of person and likes things in a specific way. Some ways that is the yin into Ana s yang,” Uy explained. That yang includes a handful of supernatural abilities Chris may or may not be aware of — “I think he s got some knowledge,” Uy teased.“The night you meet her, she is hosting a huge auction and you encounter a powerful business lady,” Lemmon said. “Then everything goes sideways, and she gets pulled away from everything and has to deal with her past, which is something that she s been running from.”(Photo by Katie Yu/Hulu)Which leads us back to Daimon.“[We’re] ripped apart at a young age,” Lemmon explained. “So we ve led completely separate lives and have totally different bags of trauma, and when we come together, it s really, really hard to find the common ground.”Perhaps the siblings can find common ground with their mother, Victoria, who is still alive in this version of the story, but not entirely herself. Marvel — whose name did not get her the job, by the way — tackles a difficult mix of mental illness and not being alone in her head. She called the work “actor s candy,” adding “this landscape of the Marvel universe, and the powers and the things that they re wrestling with, they re so huge. But as theater artists, we do the Greek [plays], and we do Shakespeare, and we are used to taking these massive cosmic issues and domesticating them. And that s something that I think we get to do very interestingly in this Marvel Universe.”From what we ve seen of the show, these cosmic issues will lead Daimon and Ana back to the pain caused by their home life with Victoria and their father.3. The Show Can Deviate From the Comics(Photo by Bettina Strauss/Hulu)Like Victoria’s continuing presence in the mental ward of a Portland area hospital, Helstrom takes certain liberties with the comics. Ana, for instance, is quite different from her curvaceous and horn-headed comic book counterpart – Lemmon recalled thinking Oh! OK, um, so we re going to be using wigs, prosthetic body parts apparently when she first saw art of Satana – and a couple of the characters more tied to Ghost Rider comics add a generational aspect to the show.In the series, both Caretaker (Robert Wisdom) and Dr. Louise Hastings (June Carryl) have been involved with the Helstrom kids for a long time. Dr. Hastings essentially raised Daimon while Caretaker looked after Ana from afar. Their roles here are quite a departure from Marvel lore — Hastings is a fairly obscure name from an early ’90s comic book series — but Zbyszewski viewed them as different ways Marvel characters can be used in a television adaptation. Caretaker, who is part of a secret society holding the line against evil in the comics, featured a natural element in the original storytelling” the producer knew could fit into his plan for Helstrom. For his part, Wisdom views the character as a cross between “Nick Fury and Indiana Jones” and thinks Marvel fans familiar with the character will be surprised by how much he cares for Ana.“They’re going to be taken with the relationship,” he said. “She’s like a bolt of lightning, and I’m trying to wrestle with [that].”Wisdom referred to it as a “dance” which may, in the end, lead to a surprising change in Caretaker himself, but also teased, “Who knows what Caretaker’s real motivation is?”(Photo by Katie Yu/Hulu)Dr. Hastings “fit in a little bit differently” according to Zbyszewski.“Sometimes the backstories in the comics are not deep enough or rich enough to mine to give your characters arcs,” he explained. As a result, Dr. Hastings benefited from a major expansion, although elaborating might constitute a spoiler. We can say she is the head of the hospital’s psychology department and one of the few people Daimon trusts.“There s a practicality to Louise that I think gets a workout, Carryl said back in February. When something kind of goes off the rails and into another realm, there s a Huh. OK. I m going to have to put that in the hopper, and it s going to pop for a [moment], and we ll deal with it later.”As a result, the character lends the show an added sense of reality. When we asked Carryl about that aspect of Dr. Hastings more recently, she said the supernatural is “not old hat yet” to the character despite raising a child who can summon hellfire.4. How soon will Wolverine show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?(Photo by 20th Century Fox)Throughout 2018, people including Feige insisted Marvel could not even begin to cook up ideas for the X-Men or Fantastic Four until the deal for the merger officially closed. There was also some talk about keeping the Fox-controlled Marvel assets separate, but that notion was later dismissed by Disney CEO Bob Iger.“There shouldn’t be two Marvels,” he said back in September.Since we previously assumed a lingering Fox contingent might delay Marvel Studios’ control of the characters, we counted out an X-Men stinger in Avengers: Endgame. Instead, we predicted Logan’s adamantium claws might appear in a 2021 mid-credits stinger scene. Now, we think it is possible — though still highly unlikely — the characters might be referenced in a singular image or a word. (It would have to be something easily shot in the next week or two as the studio could not use any of the characters or iconography until now.)But even if Marvel manages to add a Fantastic Four or X-Men tease to Endgame, that stinger moment is all we will see of the characters for some time. Marvel Studios’ 2020 output inches closer to production even if the company declines to reveal their schedule until after Endgame’s release. At this point, we know The Eternals, Black Widow, Shang-Chi, and sequels for Doctor Strange and Black Panther are in the pipeline. Presumably, three of those projects will fill the 2020 release dates. Of course, the studio has altered its plan before, bumping Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and a proposed Inhumans film to secure a place for Spider-Man: Homecoming. With that in mind, it is possible the first Marvel Studios X-Men or Fantastic Four film could happen in 2021, particularly if Feige ever gets back to Legion’s Noah Hawley about his Doctor Doom script.2. Will Dark Phoenix and New Mutants Still Be Released? While Dark Phoenix will hit theaters this June, the fate of New Mutants is more tenuous. Though still slated for an August 2 release, the film’s planned 2018 reshoots (that would change more than 50 percent of the film and introduce a new character to the story) reportedly never took place and are no longer scheduled to occur.Until the deal closed, Fox had to abide by its original agreement with Marvel Entertainment and release X-Men films at regular intervals. It also had to plan for a future in which it and Disney remained separate entities just in case the deal fell through or was delayed beyond the summer. Around this time last year, both films were pushed back to accommodate reshoots. But considering New Mutants’ additional photography never took place, it is fair to wonder if Fox delayed both films to save on development costs for other X-Men projects Marvel may eventually cancel. There is plenty to suggest this was the case and it may lead to New Mutants losing its theatrical release.3. What Other Marvel Films Did Fox Have In Development?(Photo by Mary Evans/Twentieth Century Fox / Marvel Comics/Ronald Grant/Everett Collection)Under the spirit of “business as usual” in the event the deal fell through, Fox planned to expand its output of Marvel-based films to three projects per year. The plan included more X-Men sequels while branching out with lesser known characters. One project centering on fan-favorite mutant Kitty Pryde was announced and would see Deadpool director Tim Miller returning to the X-fold. Said to be based on Uncanny X-Men #143, the film would focus on Kitty’s struggle against a N’Garai demon while spending a lonely Christmas night in the X-Mansion. Comic-book writer Brian Michael Bendis was said to be adapting the issue into a feature script for Miller. Neither has commented on the project’s prospects.Though little has been said since word first broke about the project, James Franco was set to star in a film focusing on X-Factor favorite Jamie Madrox, a.k.a. The Multiple Man. Franco’s real-life troubles may have sent this one to the back-burner, but considering X-Men characters must now compete with Shang-Chi and The Eternals for one of Marvel Studios’ coveted release dates, expect any solo X-Men outings to be a late 2020s development. Channing Tatum’s long-delayed Gambit film is also more than likely kaput. As we mentioned above, Noah Hawley signed on to develop a feature film for the greatest of Marvel villains, Doctor Doom. Recently, the Legion FX series executive producer revealed Feige asked about the draft he completed some time ago. Unfortunately, Hawley has not heard from the Marvel Studios boss since. But since we all want Doom to face off against the heroes, we hope this one works out. Finally, X-Force, the Deadpool 2 spin-off, was expected to begin shooting in late 2018 under the direction of Bad Times at the El Royale’s Drew Goddard. With cast members like Josh Brolin, Zazie Beetz, and Ryan Reynolds reprising their Deadpool 2 roles, it seemed set to become the last Fox-produced X-Men film. Sadly, Goddard refused to comment on the project following news of the acquisition’s imminent closure. And with X-Force co-creator Rob Liefeld openly discussing the film’s demise on Twitter, we’re going to assume this one is also toast.4. What About Deadpool 3?Feels like the first day of ‘Pool. pic.twitter.com/QVy8fCxgqr Ryan Reynolds (@VancityReynolds) March 19, 2019As Reynolds once joked, they may skip the third film entirely and go straight to Deadpool 4 or 5. The actor, who co-wrote the sequel with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, also said the narrative weight of taking everything away from the character in order to build him up again will only lead to diminishing returns. In light of that, he offered the possibility of playing Deadpool as a supporting character in films like X-Force. Reese and Wernick, meanwhile, have said they’d love to team Deadpool up with Spider-Man — a pairing so popular it had its own comic book.It is possible Reynolds was just cushioning himself should Marvel Studios choose not to continue with his vision of Deadpool — it is a PG-13 production house, after all — but it may also be a savvy ploy to negotiate with the company for a sweet multi-picture contract in which Deadpool shows up, does something wacky, and disappears again. It is certainly possible to tone down some of Wade Wilson’s antics for the MCU, which is what the Christmas release of a PG-13 Deadpool 2 called Once Upon a Deadpool proved.Meanwhile, Iger once told investors it is possible to carve out an R-rated niche for Marvel to allow for more D 😈😈

All M. Night Shyamalan Movies RankedM. Night Shyamalan broke through into the mainstream with his second-feature, the late 90s horror phenomenon The Sixth Sense. The two similarly successful films that followed (Unbreakable, Signs) was building up Shyamalan as a director of possible Speilbergian talent, though in danger of having his third-act screenplay twists overwhelm his brand. That bore Rotten fruit with The Village and The Happening, which set off a bum streak with big-budget sci-fi and would-be blockbusters: The Happening, The Last Airbender, and After Earth. The Visit in 2015 would be a back-to-basics, comeback horror effort. Its box office and relative critical success set the stage for the Certified Fresh Split, which brought back the dark superhero world of Unbreakable. Shyamalan closed the trilogy with Glass.Shyamalan s latest is Old. See where it places as we rank all M.
