Between the hybrid release controversies of the summer and the continued lack of attendance for non-IP originals, particularly those aimed at adults, it is still anyone’s guess what we are headed for come the holiday movie season. Barring the return of some new surge of virus infections (at least those numbers are headed in the right direction) people will hopefully feel safer filling seats at their local theaters. They certainly had a choice this weekend between staying home and buying a ticket. The latter won for one film while the former created some dismal numbers for another, casting a shadow over anything not part of a franchise the rest of the year.King of the Crop: Halloween Kills its Hybrid Release with million Debut(Photo by Universal Pictures)Before the pandemic, the focus on this weekend’s #1 movie would have been the drop from its predecessor’s million start in 2018. Halloween Kills’ million weekend is a 33.8% drop from three years ago, but even that can be put in a positive perspective looking at other sequel drops of this stature over the years. Among R-rated sequels to films opening over million, 300: Rise of an Empire (36.4%), Ted 2 (38.4%), Paranormal Activity 4 (44.8%), Sex and the City 2 (45.6%), The Matrix Revolutions (47.1%), and The Hangover Part III (51.5%) all dropped further. Alien: Covenant fell 29.1% from Prometheus but didn’t have nearly as far to fall as Halloween Kills did, leaving It: Chapter 2 (26.2%) and Deadpool 2 (5.23%) as the higher standards. The point is that this is a really terrific number for David Gordon Green’s sequel..4 million is the sixth-best opening of the pandemic. As it marks the third consecutive week of a film opening over million, that statistic may quickly become an afterthought, though it shouldn’t. Where Halloween Kills busted the ceiling this weekend was in the hybrid streaming wars. After it was announced the film would simultaneously premiere on the Peacock service the same day it premiered in theaters, its chances for widespread theatrical success appeared to be kneecapped. The first film was a rather frontloaded success story, posting just a 2.09 multiple over its opening weekend. Halloween Kills may be down 34% from the 2018 opening, but it is up 58% from the year’s best hybrid HBO MAX openings, with Godzilla vs. Kong and Space Jam: A New Legacy each in the million realm. Kong already had a two-day head start with .4 million prior to the weekend and to date is the only hybrid release (sans an additional fee) to crack the 0 million barrier. And that was a March 31 release that took over 11 weeks to reach that milestone. Halloween Kills is already halfway there in just three days.Kills also nearly doubled up The Suicide Squad (.2 million) for the best “R”-rated opening of the year in any release strategy. 54 million Peacock subscribers at last count compared to roughly 73 million for HBO MAX. (And those are late July numbers.) The five biggest WB/HBO MAX openings dropped like flies in their second weekends Godzilla vs. Kong (56.9%), The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (57.1%), Space Jam: A New Legacy (69.1%), The Suicide Squad (71.5%), and Mortal Kombat (73.2%). 2018’s Halloween fell 58.8% to .4 million in weekend two, so there’s a good chance Kills falls below million next weekend, especially if people realize they actually have Peacock on their cable service. Those who actually still have cable service.Rotten Returns: Ridley Scott s The Last Duel Reinforces a Grim Trend(Photo by 20th Century Studios)What may actually be the bigger story this weekend is the continuing failure of non-IP films aimed at adults to draw them in. Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel was speculated to at least get into eight-digit territory this weekend. Its fate was all but sealed when it opened to just 0,000 in previews Thursday night, and the final numbers were even worse than imagined. The historical drama with a cast boasting Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Jodie Comer, and Ben Affleck grossed a mere .8 million this weekend. That is less than Damon in Stillwater did this summer (.18 million) and the worst start for a Damon-led film opening in over 3,000 theaters. The previous low was We Bought a Zoo (.36 million), which nevertheless went on to gross over million over its 2011 holiday season release.There is a strong chance that The Last Duel will not even be able to leg itself out enough to outgross All the Pretty Horses (.5 million) or Stillwater (.2 million), leaving it as the third-lowest grossing Damon-led film ahead of only Suburbicon (.77 million) and Promised Land (.59 million), both of which were released in fewer than 2,050 theaters. The story is far grimmer than anything surrounding Damon’s perceived star power, though. The Last Duel represents a continuing trend in the pandemic box office for anything other than a sequel, franchise, universe-builder, or Disneyland ride to break out among audiences. Free Guy, Raya and the Last Dragon, and Old are the only films outside of those categories to gross over million this year. The Last Duel is about to become the third theatrical-exclusive film released this year in over 3,000 theaters that fails to gross even million.The Top 10 and Beyond: No Time to Die Takes Aim at 0 Million(Photo by Nicola Dove/©MGM)No Time To Die missed the opportunity to become the fifth film of the pandemic to gross 0 million in its first 10 days; instead it will take 11. With .3 million this weekend (a 56% drop) the 25th James Bond film is just shy of the milestone. That is a slightly better second weekend than F9 had ( million), though Bond is still nearly million behind its pace while also about million ahead of A Quiet Place Part II’s 10-day run. The film has a good chance to stick around the Top Five into just before Thanksgiving (and could hang on enough into that holiday) so we’ll stick with a final gross between 0-170 million domestically. Globally the film is over 7 million and could actually surpass F9’s 6 million to become the highest-grossing film of the pandemic era.Venom: Let There Be Carnage fell to .5 million (the second-best third weekend of the year), bringing its total to just over 8 million, still on a very solid pace for 0 million. That is about million below Shang-Chi’s third weekend and overall about million behind its 17-day pace. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings drove its total to over 8 million and is going to settle into the 5 million territory, suggesting that the Venom sequel will come in somewhere around the original Venom’s total of 3 million.The Addams Family 2, which is also on VOD for .99, is not far behind the pace of The Boss Baby: Family Business, which was also streaming on Peacock s subscription tiers. That animated film finished with over million. Addams looks to be in line to come in between -55 million. A24’s odd folktale, Lamb, managed to stay put in eighth place, falling from just over million to 3,000 and driving its total to million. Actually theaters and the home service will be showing Dune: Part One, as the opening title card announces it. There is no release date or production start date for Dune: Part Two. Behind the Zero(Photo by 20th Century Fox)The story behind the notorious adaptation of Martin Amis’ 1989 novel London Fields is infinitely juicier and more dramatic than the one on-screen, but that’s setting the bar exceedingly low. It s a lurid, salacious show-business melodrama involving a novel overflowing with sex and murder and the legal intrigue it inspired when an attempt was made to adapt it. The latter pitted a director eager to take his name off a picture he felt no longer represented his vision against producers he accused of adding incendiary elements against his will and a glamorous movie star couple (Johnny Depp and Amber Heard) whose marriage would explode publicly in a flurry of abuse allegations in the long years between the time London Fields was made and when it was finally released.The movie was supposed to screen at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival until director Matthew Cullen, a music video hotshot, sued the producers for non-payment and failure to allow the promised creative control. Amber Heard, meanwhile, was sued by producers for million for failing to promote the film and publicly siding with Cullen. Heard, in turn, counter-sued, alleging that the producers used a body double to get around a nudity clause in her contract.Cullen, Heard, and several of the male leads all objected to a producer adding postmodern elements into the film, including 9/11 imagery and pornographic sequences that suggested an Asylum knock-off of the orgy scenes in Eyes Wide Shut. For years, the movie existed in a state of creative and legal limbo as different cuts were produced and legal issues were very publicly hashed out, giving the movie the kind of terrible publicity that would sink a film even if it was not as staggeringly awful as London Fields is.London Fields was finally released in 2018 to universally withering reviews (including the notorious zero rating here) and near-record box-office lows, grossing a paltry 9,000 over its opening weekend, the worst tally for a film released in over 600 theaters since 2008’s Proud American. By that time, Heard and Depp, who has an uncredited role as a peacocking dandy of a loan shark/darts champion, had gone through an ugly, public divorce that cast an ominous shadow over the already troubled film.How toxic is London Fields? Director Matthew Cullen told The Hollywood Reporter of the movie’s seething pans, I ve read the reviews. I agree with them. The Zero(Photo by Paladin)Heard stars in London Fields as Nicola Six. She’s less an unusually sexy woman than sex incarnate, a black widow of a seductress who enjoys toying mercilessly with the schmucks caught up in her web before going in for the kill.She’s a ridiculous cartoon of heavy-breathing, vampish old-school sexuality. She’s a dame to kill for, a sex bomb with the ability to reduce grown men to drooling children. She s Jessica Rabbit if she really were bad, not just drawn that way. But Nicola has another gift as well: she’s clairvoyant, albeit only to the degree that the movie needs her to be at any moment she can see far enough into the future to know that she will be murdered by one of three men unhealthily obsessed with her.First up is a rail-thin, dead-eyed Billy Bob Thornton as Sam Young, our hard-boiled narrator, a world-weary failed writer with a dark secret involving his own imminent death. Sam lucks into a decidedly one-sided apartment swap with Mark Asprey (Jason Isaacs), an obscenely successful hack writer  who lives in the same posh London building as Nicola.Sam knows that Nicola is going to die, violently, in ostensibly dramatic fashion. He believes he can get a best-seller out of lightly fictionalizing his own British misadventures, but only if he’s actually there to watch the death happen. So the scribe makes Nicola a rather curious proposal: he wants permission to be there during her demise for creative and artistic reasons, of course, in addition to a desire to make loads of money. Nicola grants it, seemingly without giving the matter any consideration.(Photo by Paladin)Thornton is uncharacteristically terrible as one of the most exhausted cliches in fiction: the desperate writer who functions as the all-powerful God of the world they’ve created but who can’t begin to figure out the complexities of real life. Thornton possesses extraordinary charisma in the right roles, and he s famously an award-winning screenwriter in real life, but he s a thin, grey mist of a man here, a burnt out “intellectual” who whispers wall-to-wall narration full of nuggets of unbearable pretension like, “Love is blind, but it makes you see the blind man. It makes you search him out with eyes of love.”Then there’s Keith Talent (Jim Sturgess), a right proper soccer hooligan/Andy Capp type who seems to have staggered in drunkenly from a lesser Guy Ritchie crime comedy. He’s a broad caricature of a boorish, ignorant working-class bloke what enjoys downing a pint or twelve at the pub, watching footie with his mates, and shagging fit birds. Nicola is, of course, the fittest of fit birds. She cannot enter a man’s life without completely overtaking it, and Keith’s all-consuming desire to shag Nicola takes precedence over everything.Last and certainly least in the three-way contest to either win Nicola’s heart and/or murder her is Guy Clinch (Theo James). Guy has the manners, breeding, and expensive attire of a proper member of the educated bourgeoisie, but Nicola’s teasing manipulation transforms him into a preposterously gullible half-wit.For example, Nicola enlists Guy s help to locate two desperate people known only as Enola Gay and Little Boy the names, of course, of the plane that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima and the bomb itself. In a more knowing film, that would qualify as a sly joke about the way Guy’s desire for Nicola clouds his judgement and renders him hopeless against even the most transparent of ruses. Instead, London Fields plays this development completely straight, and Guy learns the true nature of Enola Gay and Little Boy via a book and erupts with rage at Nicola’s trickery. In order for the film s idiotic plot to work, everyone other than Nicola has to be as stupid as the filmmakers assume the audience is.At the core of London Fields’ staggering awfulness lies a fundamental confusion about the nature of its material. Is this a parody of the heavy-breathing, sex-saturated, melodramatic, viciously misogynistic cliches of erotic thrillers, neo-Noir, and crime fiction? Or is it a straightforward, moody, pretentious exploration of sex and death and art and destiny?(Photo by Paladin)The film is at its best when it embraces the trashy, delirious comedy lurking just under the surface, like Keith dancing for joy in the rain to Dire Straits’ “Money for Nothing” after receiving, you guessed it money for nothing from Nicola. Or the fact that the flamboyant world of professional darts figures so prominently in the plot.Speaking of which, Depp overacts with trademark brazenness here in a hammy star turn as a big shot in the overlapping worlds of darts and organized crime. As is almost invariably the case with late-period Depp, ninety percent of the character comes through baroque sartorial choices. He is essentially nothing more than a walking wardrobe here, and at this point, encouraging Depp to overact is a recipe for disaster.For Nicola and Sam, death lurks in the very near future, so at least they get to leave this hell eventually, and in the meantime, they ve got something to do. They’re lucky in that respect.In the most groan-inducing self-referential touch in a meta-narrative positively teeming with them, Nicola, who could only ever be a fictional character (an obscenely, broadly drawn one at that) indignantly tells Sam, “I’m not one of your one dimensional characters, Sam.” That’s true only in the sense that Nicola would need to be fleshed out further to qualify even as one-dimensional.In an even clumsier reference to the characters in this appalling fiction knowing, on some level, that they are characters in a very bad movie, Sam tells Nicola, “I’m pretty worried that the critics are going to call you a male fantasy figure.”The critics would call her, and the movie, much worse. Even the film s own director did.Final Verdict(Photo by 20th Century Fox)Believe the hype! London Fields is an impressively idiotic insult to the noble, shadow-laden legacy of classic film noir and its contemporary bastardization, the neo-noir. (Photo by HBO)HBO’s fantasy epic Game of Thrones ended on Sunday night with a finale that tied together many loose ends – we now know the fate of doltish Edmure Tully, for instance – and left many still hanging.One thing we learned is that in this world of Ice and Fire, a dragon is not a beast, but a passionate, intelligent participant in the world around him. Drogon chose not to burn Jon Snow, despite the fact that he killed its mother. Book readers will love that touch.The critics are still weighing in with their verdict on “The Iron Throne,” but an early count of reviews, shows them split roughly down the middle, which gave the series finale an early Rotten score. (We should know in the next 24 hours where the score will settle.)Until then, let’s look at some of the biggest moments of the episode.1. Tyrion Digs Out Cersei and Jaime(Photo by HBO)Despite actress Lena Headey’s Instagram goodbye last week, we were unable to believe Cersei and Jaime were dead until Tyrion dug them out of the rubble on Sunday night.The dead lovers are entwined and still beautiful in death. Considering that they were crushed by the Red Keep, that is something.2. Daenerys “Break the Wheel” Speech(Photo by HBO)It just got all Hunger Games up in here. The scene has a fascist aesthetic – very Triumph of the Will, the 1935 Nazi propaganda film directed by Leni Riefenstahl. Or – another way of looking at it – like any Star Wars Stormtrooper assembly ever.The Mother of Dragons first thanks her Dothraki bloodriders for defeating the men in the iron suits, tearing down their stone houses, and delivering the Seven Kingdoms to her. She names Grey Worm the Master of War.(Photo by HBO)She addresses the Unsullied in Old Valyrian, congratulating them on being “liberators.” One person in the audience who may understand her is Arya, and she does not look happy.Tyrion sidles up to Daenerys, who accuses him of treason. He throws down his Hand of the Queen pin, and she promptly has him detained.Arya sneaks up on Jon: “You’ll always be a threat to her. I know a killer when I see one.”3. Tyrion and Jon Come to an Undertanding(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Tyrion argues that Daenerys has gone beyond her initial purpose, now intending to recut the world under her rule.“Love is more powerful than reason,” Tyrion says.“Love is the death of duty,” Jon says, quoting Maester Aemon.“You are the shield that guards the realms of men,” Tyrion reminds Jon. “Who is the greatest threat to the people now? … Do you think I’m the last man she’ll execute? Who is more dangerous than the rightful heir to the Iron Throne?”The clincher? Tyrion reminds Jon that Sansa and Arya won’t bend the knee.4. Jon Kills Daenerys(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)First, Drogon emerging from under a pile of ash to greet/inspect Jon was spectacular – the effects are, of course, perfect this episode.Daenerys lives the moment she dreamed about: her death.Jon begs for mercy for Tyrion and the people who followed Cersei, but Daenerys refuses, painting a picture of an entirely new world order: “I know what is good. And so do you.”He does.(Photo by HBO)After her pitch/proposal, she and Jon kiss.“You are my queen – now and always,” he says, as he stabs her.Be comforted: Drogo and Daenerys’ son are waiting for her.5. Drogon Melts the Iron Throne(Photo by HBO)Drogon senses something is amiss and touches down behind Jon. The dragon grieving for his mother is both fearsome and moving. At his full height, he resembles Maleficent in Disney classic Sleeping Beauty.After seriously threatening Jon, Drogon melts the Iron Throne, picks up Daenerys, and flies away. We’re hoping not to a red priestess of R hllor for some resurrection ritual.6. “All hail Bran the Broken, First of his Name, King of the Andals and the First Men, Lord of the Six Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm”(Photo by Macall B. Polay/HBO)Grey Worm brings prisoner Tyrion before a council of lords and ladies of the realm. Among them: Samwell Tarly; Lord Edmure Tully; Arya, Bran, and Sansa Stark; Brienne of Tarth; Ser Davos Seaworth; Gendry Baratheon, apparently still Lord of Storm’s End; Yara Greyjoy; a Dornish lord; inexplicably hot Robin Arryn, lord of the Eyrie; and Lord Arryn s bannerman Lord Yohn Royce.They are here to decide the fate of Tyrion, Jon Snow, and the realm overall. Davos offers Grey Worm the Reach (Highgarden, former home of the Tyrells), but Grey Worm is being stubborn and just wants “justice.”Arya almost steals the scene entirely, threatening to cut Yara’s throat for suggesting that Jon should die.(Photo by Macall B. Polay/HBO)Tyrion argues that the gathering should choose a new king to decide everyone’s fate. Looks like Edmure returned simply to make an ass of himself again, but Sansa stops him before he finishes nominating himself for king. Sam suggests an open election and is laughed back into his seat.Tyrion denies that he wants the throne and suggests “Bran the Broken” – and so it is. When Sansa notes that Bran can’t have children, Tyrion says it’s for the best.“That is the wheel the queen wanted to break. From now on rulers will not be born. They will be chosen – on this spot – by the lords and ladies of Westeros to serve the realm,” Tyrion suggests.Sansa breaks the North off to be an independent kingdom. Because: Sansa.Bran names Tyrion his Hand.7. Closure(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Tyrion informs Jon that his cousin has ordered him back to the Night’s Watch. Its loss in the Outstanding Drama Series category did make room for kinda-surprises like Pose and Bodyguard, which were not considered absolute locks going into nominations morning.Surprise: Comedy Rules (the Tomatometer)Debbie DayThe average Tomatometer for Best Comedy Series is 97.86% on the Tomatometer, while the average for Best Drama Series is 87.13%. Even if Game of Thrones eighth season 54% is removed, the drama category still only averages 91.29%. Both seasons of Fleabag, for one, are Certified Fresh at 100%, contributing to comedy s dominance.Snub: Richard Madden for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series for BodyguardDebbie DayWhile Netflix’s U.K. terrorist thriller Bodyguard may have scored an Outstanding Drama Series nomination, star Richard Madden – who had been considered a lock in the drama actor category – was left in the cold. It was one of the biggest snubs of the morning, considering the critical praise heaped on Madden for his dedicated, physically and emotionally demanding performance as war vet David Budd, not to mention his Golden Globe win for the role. Madden’s loss might have been Milo Ventimiglia’s gain, though; the This Is Us star was a semi-surprise, sneaking into the category.Surprise: When They See Us Women Dominate Limited Series Category(Photo by Atsushi Nishijima/Netflix)Pundits were predicting that Jharrel Jerome, who plays one of the five wrongly accused men, Korey Wise, in Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us, might nab a spot in the limited series lead actor category – and he did. The big surprise today was that Niecy Nash, who plays Wise’s mom Delores, and Anjanue Ellis, who plays Sharon Salaam, were both nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie. The two women beat out big names like Emma Stone for Maniac and Julianna Margulies for The Hot Zone. A surprise to prognosticators, sure, but anyone who saw their work as desperate mothers fighting the system in the acclaimed Certified Fresh Netflix miniseries might have seen this kind of upset coming.
