The same appears to be true of his latest project, which sees him doing arguably his best work ever under the guidance of the Safdie brothers, who pulled a similarly impressive performance from Robert Pattinson in last year s Good Time. Director Jay Roach has taken on timely material before in films like Recount and Game Change with pretty consistent results, and he s aided in Bombshell by a trio of powerhouse actors, namely Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie. The film charts the sexual misconduct allegations leveled at Ailes (played by John Lithgow) by Gretchen Carlson (Kidman), Megyn Kelly (Theron), and several other women whose experiences were rolled into Robbie s fictional character Kayla Pospisil. Community 88% Composer: Ludwig GöranssonPerformer: The 88In a little less than a decade, Ludwig Göransson has emerged as a hotly in-demand talent in the music business, landing an eclectic assortment of projects that runs the gamut from producing pop and hip-hop records to scoring major movies like Creed, Venom, and Black Panther (for which he won an Oscar) — and it all started on the set of Community, where his musical contributions included the theme song, At Least It Was Here. Göransson didn t perform the tune, which was recorded by L.A.-based pop band The 88, but it opened a slew of doors for the Swedish composer — including a long and fruitful association with acclaimed recording artist Childish Gambino, a.k.a. Community veteran Donald Glover.15. Westworld 81% Composer: Ramin DjawadiWestworld s theme hasn t burrowed its way into the collective prestige TV-watching consciousness the way the Game of Thrones theme has, but give it time — as he did with his Thrones theme, composer Ramin Djawadi uses his music to introduce the show by distilling the conflict at the heart of the story, reflecting the tension between more-human-than-human androids and their flesh-and-blood overlords with a melody that weaves between piano and strings.14. Friday Night Lights 97% Composer: W.G. Snuffy WaldenTV shows adapted from movies haven t had the most stellar track record, to put it mildly, so it s easy to forgive the members of Explosions in the Sky for refusing to provide the theme song to the Friday Night Lights series — and just as easy to understand why the showrunners turned to TV music pro W.G. Snuffy Walden for some musical cues that would evoke the Texas band s deeply evocative instrumental style. It was Explosions Your Hand in Mine that anchored the Friday Night Lights movie soundtrack, after all — and the surging Walden score used for the FNL television theme echoed their work so strongly that plenty of fans still think they actually performed it.13. Six Feet Under 81% Composer: Thomas NewmanTV theme songs have come from just about anywhere — older, obscure songs repurposed for new shows; new music commissioned from unlikely sources; even a few seconds of seemingly incidental sound can end up opening a series. But sometimes, a showrunner s best option is to fall back on the tried and true and reach out to a professional composer — as Six Feet Under creator Alan Ball did when he hired Thomas Newman to contribute the theme music for his HBO series. Newman, a frequent Oscar nominee whose work has been heard everywhere from Revenge of the Nerds to The Shawshank Redemption, went on to win an Emmy; these days, Newman is back on the small screen with the theme song for Hulu s Stephen King-inspired Castle Rock.12. Malcolm in the Middle  Composers: John Flansburgh and John LinnellPerformer: They Might Be GiantsThey Might Be Giants have made a career out of distilling the absurd into pure pop genius, so it s perhaps only fitting that one of their greatest moments of mainstream success came courtesy of a song that started out as a 30-second introduction to a sitcom. Approached by Malcolm in the Middle creator Linwood Boomer for a theme song, longtime partners John Flansburgh and John Linnell served up Boss of Me, which ended up anchoring a seven-season hit — and winning the duo their first Grammy.10. The Office 81% Composer: Jay FergusonHardcore fans of The Office know that supporting character Creed Bratton is a fictionalized version of his portrayer Creed Bratton, who in real life was a member of the band the Grass Roots and has continued his recording career since the series ended. But Bratton isn t the show s only connection to a 60s and 70s cult favorite group — the theme song was written by Jay Ferguson, who was a member of Spirit before launching a solo career that segued into film and television work. His impressively eclectic credits also include a cut on the Terminator soundtrack and the Nightmare on Elm Street 5 score, but this ode to Dunder Mifflin might always be his greatest hit.9. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt 96% Composer: Jeff RichmondA sitcom about a young woman experiencing the world after being freed from captivity in an underground bunker for 15 years faces a number of uphill battles right off the bat, not the least of which is the question of how to come up with a theme song that makes audiences okay with playing such a horrific premise for cheerful laughs. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt had a secret weapon in composer Jeff Richmond, who just so happens to be married to series co-creator Tina Fey — and who teamed up with Songify the News masterminds the Gregory Brothers to create a suitably silly fake viral news clip a la Bed Intruder. 8. Curb Your Enthusiasm 92% Composer: Luciano MicheliniLuciano Michelini s Frolic couldn t have made a better theme for Curb Your Enthusiasm if he d tried — which works out perfectly, since the Italian composer penned the piece for the 1974 Italian film La Bellissima Estate, decades before this long-running HBO comedy was even a glimmer in Larry David s eye. As David later explained, he came up with the idea of using Michelini s music after hearing Frolic in a bank commercial and deciding it would make an ideal counterpoint to some of his character s more misanthropic behavior. Nine seasons later (and counting), it s still a perfect match.7. Law & Order  Composer: Mike PostBy any measure, it s hard to overstate Mike Post s influence on the television music landscape. A towering presence during the 70s and 80s, Post collected an impressive array of pop radio hits as a TV composer — his instrumental themes for The Rockford Files, Hill Street Blues, and Magnum P.I. all made the Top 40, while the theme for The Greatest American Hero, featuring vocals from the immortal Joey Scarbury, was a No. 2 smash. All that being said, it s Post s work for Law Order that might be most widely remembered today — and not only the theme song, but the scene-changing sound effect, dubbed  The Clang, that became an L O franchise mainstay.6. Doctor Who 92% Composer: Ron Grainer and Delia DerbyshireFew television series have balanced permanence and change as artfully as Doctor Who. A BBC mainstay from the early 60s through the late 80s, the show remained beloved by sci-fi fans during its years in TV limbo — and it s attracted a whole new generation of fans since returning to the airwaves full-time in 2005. Along the way, the Who theme song (titled simply Doctor Who ) has remained a haunting through line, with Ron Grainer and Delia Derbyshire s groundbreaking original arrangement echoing through every subsequent update.5. The Walking Dead 80% Composer: Bear McCrearyOne of the most TV s prolific composers, Bear McCreary s work includes the themes for Starz series Outlander, Black Sails, and DaVinci s Demons. He s also responsible for The Sarah Connor Chronicles, the Battlestar Galactica 2004 series, Defiance, as well as film and video game titles. The Walking Dead went on to be the most watched series on TV, and its haunting theme is instantly recognizable.4. Mad Men 94% Composer: Ramble Jon Krohn, a.k.a. RJD2Performer: RJD2Spurned by Beck, who later recalled scoffing at the idea of a television show about ad executives in the 60s, Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner was stuck for a theme song — until he happened to catch the instrumental version of A Beautiful Mine. Originally written by producer RJD2 for Magnificent City, his 2006 collaboration with rapper Aceyalone, the song was reissued without vocals on RJD2 s appropriately titled Magnificent City Instrumentals LP the same year; Weiner was hooked by a snippet of the track between stories on NPR, and the rest was television history.3. The Simpsons 85% Composer: Danny ElfmanHe wouldn t give up his day job as the frontman for art-pop collective Oingo Boingo until the mid- 90s, but Danny Elfman started branching out into film work with Pee-wee s Big Adventure in 1985, launching a side hustle that would eventually come to largely define public perception of his career. Elfman s composed a slew of soundtrack works since, but the most widely heard of them all is probably the Simpsons theme, which has primed audiences for the jaundiced Springfield clan s animated adventures over a record-setting run that includes more than 600 episodes (and counting).2. Friends  Composers: Phil Sōlem, Danny Wilde, David Crane, Marta Kauffman, Michael Skloff, and Allee WillisPerformer: The RembrandtsThe Rembrandts will always be best remembered for performing the theme song to Friends, but it wasn t supposed to be that way. Singer/songwriters Phil Solem and Danny Wilde had already released a pair of albums (the first of which, their self-titled 1990 effort, included a Top 15 hit in Just the Way It Is, Baby ), and recorded the 45-second original version of I ll Be There for You strictly as a work for hire. After the show took off and a Nashville radio station started broadcasting a full-length edit of the song that they d cobbled together by looping audio from the opening credits, it snowballed into a hit — and Solem and Wilde were pressured into cutting an official version that ended up overshadowing their third album, LP. The duo split soon after, but reunited after the turn of the millennium. Friends fans, meanwhile, are still hoping for a reunion of their own.1. Game of Thrones 89% Composer: Ramin DjawadiTo set the stage for television s most epic fantasy drama, composer Ramin Djawadi wrote a main theme with a stirring, propulsive melody — one perfectly suited to get viewers in the mood for dragon battles while sweeping over a map of the show s world. Though Djawadi worked largely in minor keys — reflective of the dark lengths to which Game of Thrones characters often go — observant listeners will notice major keys peeking through the gloom as the song goes on, a musical manifestation of the battle between darkness and light.Like this? The title refers to a security guard who discovered a suspicious backpack bomb at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. Rockwell will play Jewell s defense attorney, and the title role is going to Paul Walter Hauser, who was arguably the breakout star of I, Tonya. (At one point, that role would have gone to Jonah Hill, when he was physically much heavier.) The cast for the film expanded even further this week, though, as Kathy Bates will also be co-starring as Jewell s mother. In related news, Paul Walter Hauser also signed on this week for a lower profile film, Silk Road, which is also based on a true crime story.3. NETFLIX ADAPTING HIT VIDEO GAME THE DIVISION WITH JESSICA CHASTAIN AND JAKE GYLLENHAAL(Photo by JA, Jason Smith/Everett Collection)There are so many Marvel movies (over 30 if you include the various Sony and Fox movies) that it s rare to find a big star who hasn t appeared in at least one of them. Jessica Chastain co-starred as an alien in last week s Dark Phoenix, and Jake Gyllenhaal will play Mysterio in next month s Spider-Man: Far from Home, and we now know that they will both headline an upcoming video game movie. Both of them actually joined the movie based on Tom Clancy s The Division three years ago, but that was so long ago that, until this week, it didn t seem like a sure thing that either was still attached. The big reveal this week is that Netflix has stepped in to produce and distribute The Division, which will be the next film directed by David Leitch, who s coming off Certified Fresh action hits in Atomic Blonde (78%) and Deadpool 2 (83%). Tom Clancy s The Division is an action role-playing game set in New York City following a mass genocide from a viral attack.4. NETFLIX ENLISTS COCO WRITER FOR THEIR TAKE ON CHRONICLES OF NARNIA (Photo by Walt Disney courtesy Everett Collection)Ostensibly inspired by the box office successes of both the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings movies, Walden Media started adapting C.S. Lewis The Chronicles of Narnia in 2005 with The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. That first movie was a box office smash (5 million globally), but the second (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian) and third (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader) both dropped by nearly half with 9 million and 5 million, respectively. (The third film also dipped the franchise into Rotten territory.) Disney released the first two films, and Fox the third, but nine years later, Netflix now has the rights. To get things started, Netflix has hired screenwriter Matthew Aldrich (who cowrote Pixar s Coco, Certified Fresh at 97%) to work on their ambitious adaptations of Lewis seven novels into both movies and at least one series.5. MELISSA MCCARTHY S ST. St. Vincent was directed by Ted Melfi (Hidden Figures), who had planned to direct a psychiatric dramedy called Fruit Loops (with Woody Harrelson) next, until Disney recently let it go as part of their new Fox plans. Quickly shifting gears, Melfi will instead next direct a tragic comedy called The Starling, with McCarthy and O Dowd reuniting from St. Vincent as a married couple struggling with grief.6. BO BURNHAM WILL WRITE THE NEW SESAME STREET MOVIE S SONGS  (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Although January is historically seen as a dump month, studios have more recently been enjoying success with the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend in mid-January (Glass in 2019, Hidden Figures in 2017, Ride Along 2 in 2016, etc.). Warner Bros. is developing a Sesame Street musical starring Anne Hathaway, and they chose a release date of January 15, 2021 (which would have been MLK s 92nd birthday) a while back. Filming isn t expected to start until April of next year, and this week, we found out who will be writing the new Sesame Street songs. That role has gone to comedian-turned-writer-director Bo Burnham, who is coming off a great 2018 after his award-winning feature directorial debut with teen drama Eighth Grade (Certified Fresh at 99%). As pointed out in this piece, Burnham made an early mark on YouTube by performing raunchy songs like My Whole Family Thinks I m Gay, but it s pretty obvious that his Sesame Street songs won t be like that. Or so we assume.7. CLASSIC HORROR FILM BLACK CHRISTMAS GETTING REMADE (AGAIN)(Photo by MGM courtesy Everett Collection)Possibly more than any other genre, horror movies are particularly ripe for remakes, mostly because they can be made relatively affordably with a high potential box office return. In 2006, one such remake was Black Christmas (Rotten at 15%), based on the influential early 1974 slasher of the same title (Fresh at 71%). Both films featured young actresses as sorority house members who later became more famous: Margot Kidder (Superman) in the original film, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane, TV s Fargo) in the remake. Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures are rushing to remake Black Christmas again, and the lead actress this time around will be Imogen Poots, who co-starred in 2016 s Green Room. We say rushing because Universal has scheduled Black Christmas for just six months from now (December 13, 2019), up against the Jumanji sequel. The updated film will be directed by Sophia Takal, who co-wrote the script with April Wolfe, which gives the remake a unique female perspective that might be exactly the jolt it needs.Rotten Ideas2. KEVIN HART REMAKING BILL MURRAY S SCROOGED (Photo by Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures)Bill Murray s zombie comedy The Dead Don t Die is in theaters this weekend, and he s all over The Weekly Ketchup as well. This is the third story with Murray connections, following Ghostbusters 3 and The Starling (which is a reunion project for St. Vincent, in which Bill Murray starred). Although they don t always hit financially, remakes remain popular with Hollywood because many of them can be made relatively affordably (compared to say, superhero movies), but still have name brand familiarity. In 1988, Bill Murray starred in Scrooged (Fresh at 70%), which was itself basically a remake (more specificially a reimagination) of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol. Well, that remake is going to get a remake, because Kevin Hart is producing and is expected to star in a Scrooged remake for Paramount Pictures. The Scrooged remake does not yet have a screenwriter or director, so it s probably at least a few Christmases away.1. ANIMATED SPICE GIRLS MOVIE IN THE WORKS(Photo by Columbia Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Last year marked the 20th anniversary of the 1998 Spice Girls movie, Spice World (Rotten at 35%), which unironically had absolutely nothing to do with Frank Herbert s Dune (melange jokes for the win). As with all mortals, time marches on even for the Spice Girls, but Paramount Pictures has figured out a way to make another Spice Girls movie: animation. All five original Spice Girls members are signed on to star in the new animated film, which will feature both their hit songs and new songs as well. The Spice Girls movie is part of a new Paramount Animation slate that aims to release two movies a year, starting in 2020 with The SpongeBob Movie: It s a Wonderful Sponge (5/22/2020) and the comic book adaptation Rumble (7/31/2020). Paramount is also still developing an animated Mighty Mouse movie. This story isn t the week s Rotten Idea for those films, however, but because of Spice World s Tomatometer score.Like this? It s also the studio s first foray into delivering some original programming to Disney+, with the first two episodes of the series premiering to the streamer on Friday, January 15.The highly-anticipated series puts Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and her synthezoid boyfriend Vision (Paul Bettany) in the spotlight. A 1950s-style sitcom spotlight, to be specific. On the surface, WandaVision looks to be unlike anything Marvel has done within the 13-year framework of its Marvel Cinematic Universe.But does the program work? Here s what critics are saying about WandaVision:HOW DOES THE SITCOM NARRATIVE WORK?(Photo by Marvel Studios/Disney+) Each new episode replicates a different decade of yesteryear sitcoms beginning with 1950s I Love Lucy and The Dick Van Dyke Show in the premiere episode. If Beale Street Could Talk writer-director Barry Jenkins snapped a picture of Lee s custom Nikes and chatted animatedly with A Star is Born helmer Cooper. Richard E. Grant was spotted gleefully snapping selfies with several nominees – something that caused us to lament Timothée Chalamet’s snub in the Best Supporting Actor category, as we might have seen their online bromance manifest in real life.Nominees Briefed on Keeping it Brief(Photo by Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images)It wasn t all fun and games, though; the luncheon featured some advice and instructions for nominees for the big night, especially when it came to speeches. When a winner walks up for an acceptance speech on Oscar night, they re not just being recognized for their performance – it’s the result of hundreds of hours, millions of dollars, and teams of people working tirelessly to achieve that goal. The temptation after all that toil is to thank everyone, which is why speeches can often run long. At the luncheon, however, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) President John Bailey made it abundantly clear that while, yes, this is a great achievement and one to be proud of, no one would be allowed extra time. Ninety seconds: That’s all that is afforded to winners to make their speeches. Only at events like this do we get to sit down with the brilliant [people] we admire and talk about filmmaking.” Melissa McCarthy brought her mom Sandra to the lunch and said it was not the star power that wowed her but the menu. She’s so happy they served food, said McCarthy. “We really get to each lunch? He won two years ago, I won last year, and this year we are competing against each other… How can you not have fun with that?” Rockwell is currently filming Fosse/Verdon, FX s Lin-Manuel Miranda-produced mini-series about the iconic Broadway choreographer’s life and partnership with Gwen Verdon, his wife, collaborator, and muse. The project sets him up for a potential repeat showdown with Ali, star of HBO s True Detective, at next year s Emmys and Golden Globes. I’m seated next to Lady Gaga and across from Terence Blanchard [Spike Lee’s longtime composer and world-renowned jazz musician, who this year celebrates his first nomination for BlacKkKlansman]. But it was Richard E. The Korean-born American actor, just a few years out from leaving his star-making turn as Glenn on The Walking Dead – the episode still crushes us to this day – had delivered the kind of charismatic, sinister, and layered performance that, had it not been in a foreign film, would have all but assured him a solid awards-season run. Yet, despite some serious campaigning from writers and industry folks who heralded his turn as the almost Ripley-esque figure, it was not to be.Burning was just one within a streak of exciting post­-Walking Dead projects that have marked Yeun as one of the most interesting and unpredictable actors of his generation – and one of the Freshest. Since leaving the AMC series in 2016, he has popped up in Bong Joon-ho’s Okja and Boots Riley’s Sorry To Bother You, and he s played the lead in the ultra-violent action/horror/comedy Mayhem, all Certified Fresh; add to that some great TV voice work in acclaimed animated series Tuca Bertie and Wizards. And then there’s this year’s Minari, in which he plays an immigrant father chasing the American dream in the rural South – and dragging an unwitting family along with him – and which won top honors at last year’s Sundance Film Festival.Minari arrives in theaters with three Screen Actors Guild Nominations, including for two for Yeun for Lead Actor and as part of the ensemble, and a controversial Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, despite being a decidedly American production and story. (Pundits predict the Academy won’t be making another Burning-level oversight of his performance when Oscar nominations are eventually announced, either.) How did you decide to do those films, and why did you want to work with those filmmakers?Yeun: It s strange, because you re asking me now from a kind of a retrospective lens, and maybe I ve by this point kind of compiled a story to tell about what happened and how I made these choices, but in those moments, I don t know if I had agency like that. I probably did. I certainly said no to things that I felt were just other versions of things that I ve tried before.But I think a lot of it is, for me, I was really trying to find myself. I was really trying to find out who I was and kind of get to play in roles that allowed me the space to express the fullness of, not me per se, but of a character. As an Asian-American actor, prior to Walking Dead, if I had any opportunities at all, it was really mostly to service larger narratives or kind of be a plot point by which to weave the main character around. So I wanted to be the main character that gets to have the plot points to weave around. With Mayhem, I m so thankful to them for giving me my first chance at a leading role.
