(Photo by Warner Bros./ courtesy Everett Collection)DC Movies In Order: How to Watch All 10 DCEU MoviesWelcome to the DC Extended Universe (DCEU)! If you re looking to watch these interconnected superhero DC movies in order as their events unfold chronologically, you ll want to start with Wonder Woman, which takes place across 1918 in the midst of World War I. Next stop: Big action and even bigger hair with Wonder Woman 1984.From there, the rest of the DCEU s chronological order lines up with their movies releases. Get acquainted with Superman in Man of Steel, and then see him bond with Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Suicide Squad is up next before you get to witness the epic team-up Justice League. (Substitute in the four-hour Zack Snyder s Justice League if you want more, though that is non-canon.)From there, we go to Aquaman, Shazam!, and Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). 2021 s The Suicide Squad is set several years after the first Squad and largely distances itself from that original, though many characters return, including Quinn, Rick Flagg, and Amanda Waller. Now, continue on to see the full guide on how to watch the DC movies in order! In the lead up to Avengers: Endgame, we invited fans to take part in a mammoth survey to find out your favorite movies, characters, and moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe – so far! Hundreds of Rotten Tomatoes fans took part, weighing in on their favorite Avengers, their favorite villains, their most heartbreaking Infinity War deaths, and which post-Endgame movie they re most excited to see. (Because it may be the endgame this week, but the MCU will go on). We dug deep into the data to spot some fun trends, seeing if there were divides along gender lines (ladies love M Baku, who d have thunk it!?) and generations (our Millennial/Non-Millennial split told us a bunch). Check out the results and major findings below, and let us know your own answers in the comments section.Captain America and Iron Man Tie for Favorite Avenger With 53%, While Ladies Love Thor(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)In one of our survey’s most unsurprising results, the two Avengers whose relationship underpins the entire MCU came out on top when we asked Who Is Your Favorite Avenger? Some 53% of fans cast votes for Tony Stark and Steve Rogers; Thor came in a close third with 50% of respondents naming him one of their favorites.Cap was the clear overall favorite when it came to younger fans: 64% of Millennials named him one of their favorites (compared with 55% for Iron Man). Female fans were slightly less into Steve, though, with 44% of female respondents saying he was a favorite, compared with 59% of males. For the ladies, it was all about the God of Thunder: Thor got the highest percentage of female votes, with 55% of female respondents designating the Asgardian one of their most beloved heroes.Spidey was surprisingly divisive, both between the sexes and among generations. While 46% of male fans called Peter Parker one of their favorite Avengers, just 29% of female fans did the same. Not surprisingly, the youngest Avenger has some serious Millennial appeal, getting 44% of Millennials to name him a fave, compared with 36% of Non-Millennials.The top nine favorites in our survey were all characters who have had standalone MCU films (Hulk, whose standalone film did not star Mark Ruffalo, came in last amongst those). The bottom eight have not had their own films, although one is on the way for Black Widow (ranked 10th), and Scarlet Witch, Vision, Bucky Barnes, and Falcon will all appear in limited series on Disney+.Here are the full results from the question, Who Is Your Favorite Avenger? (Note, people could vote for multiple characters.)Iron Man 53%Captain America   53%Thor 50%Spider-Man 39%Doctor Strange 30%Black Panther 29%Ant-Man 29%Captain Marvel 25%Hulk 23%Black Widow 18%Hawkeye 13%Scarlet Witch 13%Vision 10%Bucky Barnes 9%Falcon 7%Quicksilver 6%War Machine 6%

Midsommar, Ari Aster s sun-drenched – and presumably blood-soaked – followup to Hereditary, is one of the most anticipated and mystery-shrouded horror releases of the year. What we know: The movie is about a group of friends who go to a festival in Sweden where s t gets very real. What we don t know: Pretty much everything else. Rotten Tomatoes got the chance to peel back some of that mystery recently in an exclusive interview with Aster and co-stars Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor ahead of the first screenings of the movie. Here, Aster, Pugh, and Reynor talk about the folkloric inspirations behind the movie, the breakup story at its heart, and the grueling shoot that resulted in what is apparently one terrifying, weird, and explosive ride. The trio offered one key piece of advice for moviegoers heading to theaters to see Midsommar: Watch the walls. Midsommar is in theaters July 3.Like this? After a lively presentation featuring moderator Stephen Colbert, director J.J. Abrams, producer Kathleen Kennedy, and various members of the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker cast, Abrams unleashed the first teaser trailer for the film, finally ending months of speculation about the film’s title and revealing a few key things. Let’s take a look and some of the things we learned from the teaser and the Star Wars Celebration presentation as Star Wars returns to the Skywalker Saga and its key ideas one last time. No One Is Ever Gone and the Palpatine Cackle(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Despite becoming one with the Force at the conclusion of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) continues to offer Rey (Daisy Ridley) advice from the same place Obi-Wan counseled him long, long ago. Early in the trailer, he tells her that 1000 generations of Jedi experience lives within her, but the fight she will face is hers alone. From the start, it seems the fight will be with Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), her most obvious rival in this latest contest for the balance of the Force. But late in the trailer, the familiar laugh of Sheev Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) can be heard, suggesting the “great evil” Abrams teased during the panel presentation will indeed be the original Sith architect of the Empire, tying the first episode back into the ninth.McDiarmid made a brief appearance on the Celebration stage to simply say “roll it again” for an appreciative crowd. But the sense that no one is gone also informed the shots of Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa. As previously reported, Abrams used material from The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi to keep her alive in the story. “Emotionally, everyday, it hits me that she isn’t here, but we’re still working with her every day,” he said. “She is there in these scenes — in some scenes with Billie [Lourd], her daughter. Princess Leia lives in this film in a way that is mind-blowing to me.”Luke s Lightsaber Lives(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Prior to rolling the teaser, Ridley was asked about the status of the Skywalker lightsaber seemingly destroyed at the conclusion of The Last Jedi. “My answer is not the end of the story,” she said. “But the lightsaber Rey inherited from Luke lives.”This proved to be true in the teaser, with Rey igniting the laser sword shortly before Kylo’s TIE fighter reaches her on an unidentified desert planet. While the saber may not be a Star Wars: Episode I — Phantom Menace detail — Anankin (Jake Lloyd) was far too young in that film to construct it — it is one of the longest standing icons of the entire series. And while broken in the last film, its appearance here is, ultimately, appropriate. There Will Be Worlds Both Strange and Familiar(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)So let’s talk about that desert planet for a moment. Star Wars loves its deserts. Despite Luke telling C-3P0 (Anthony Daniels) that Tatooine is the planet furthest from the bright center of the universe, it is a shockingly important world in terms of galactic history during the Skywalker Era. It remains to be seen if the desert planet in the teaser is Tatoonie, Jakku, or yet another desert planet, but considering that environment’s prevalence in the Skywalker Saga, it has to be a key element of The Rise of Skywalker. But it is not the only biome one can expect to see in the film. In the teaser, we get brief shots of an icy, mountain world, a dying forest bathed in red sunlight, and even a return to the Yavin star system. During the panel, Abrams also revealed a photo featuring the Millennium Falcon and many of the characters in a jungle environment. Abrams called the film an “an epic space adventure on many worlds,” and it would appear to be true. But will the Falcon crew hop to as many worlds as the Rogue One group? Time, of course, will tell.Lando Pilots the Falcon Again(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Perhaps one of the most emotional shots in the teaser for Star Wars old-timers is the glimpse of Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) and Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) at the controls of the Millennium Falcon. As it happens, Lando is even back in his yellow-and-blue shirt from the Solo: A Star Wars Story era, recalling the circumstances under which he lost the ship in the first place. It’s a good look on Williams, who also appeared on stage with the cast. “I didn’t expect to be in this new adventure, but I got lucky,” he said when asked about returning to the role. “I regard this as a real highlight.”But he, of course, defended the scoundrel’s actions in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back when Colbert asked him about selling out the rebels to Darth Vader. “I get sick and tired of being accused of betraying Han Solo,” he joked. “He had to figure something out! Did anybody die?” he continued, pausing only as the crowd applauded.  “I had to figure out a way to prevent the complete demise of my friend and his friends.”Of course, it remains to be seen if Lando will prevent any more deaths with his return to the series. But based on the character’s excitement to be back in the saddle — presumably for the first time since his Star Wars: Return of the Jedi run on the second Death Star — we can’t wait to see what he does with the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy.BB-8 Has A Cute New Droid Pal(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)“BB-8 has a new friend,” said Abrams shortly before rolling the teaser. A new, even smaller droid wandered onto stage. “His name is D-O,” said the director. Looking like a tricycle wheel with a shuttlecock affixed at the top, he immediately elicited sounds of what we can only call “affection” from the crowd in attendance. He appears briefly in the teaser alongside BB-8, but both the preview and the director were mum on his ultimate role in the saga’s final chapter. Like BB-8 and the porgs before him, expect D-O to be your favorite new cute Star Wars character. Provided you enjoy cuteness in your Star Wars, that is.For those that do not — which is equally valid — the teaser also offers a brief glimpse of Kylo Ren’s helmet being reforged. Rumors persist that the long-teased Knights of Ren will finally make their debut in this story. And if they are aligned with the great evil of Palpatine, expect a certain darkness worthy of concluding Star Wars. Funny they all feature McDiarmid’s characteristic laugh. We See the Remains of the Death Star(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Another iconic Star Wars element resurfaces in the teaser in the form of Death Star wreckage Rey, Finn (John Boyega) and the others spy in the distance. Considering the terrain, we’re assuming the piece of the infamous battle station landed on one of the planets in the Yavin system, if not the moon of Yavin IV where the rebels maintained their secret base in the original Star Wars, Rogue One, and the final season of Star Wars Rebels. The image evokes both the original film and the haunting image of a smashed Star Destroyer in the Force Awakens teaser. Of course, fans will immediately wonder how a piece of the space station could survive the explosion as depicted in Star Wars, but debris of that magnitude does not seem out of the realm of possibility. Remember all the jokes about the second Death Star raining debris across the forest moon of Endor and ending the Ewoks in the resulting ecological disaster?Despite the presumed improbability of the wreckage surviving for 30-odd years, it shook the Celebration stage audience as they saw it for the first time. When The Phantom Menace teaser first debuted 20 years ago, it boldly declared “Every Saga Has A Beginning.” The Rise of Skywalker echoes that sentiment by declaring “The Saga Comes To An End.” Despite a title more appropriate for a Star Wars prequel or reboot, The Rise of Skywalker definitely declares a conclusion to the great filmic experiment that began over 40 years ago, something that Abrams, Kennedy, and the cast stressed during the panel. And the emotions surrounding that were felt on the Celebration stage, even as the crowd cheered Rey on in her leap atop a TIE Fighter. Emotions, we expect, that people will feel when the film comes out this Christmas.Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens on December 20, 2019.Like this?
(Photo by © Focus Features)Killing Eve writer and season 2 showrunner Emerald Fennell s debut feature film, Promising Young Woman, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival Saturday night and is already one of the fest s buzziest titles. Marketed as a #MeToo revenge thriller – Cassie (Carey Mulligan) lures not-so-good guys home from the club by pretending to be blackout drunk, only to quickly come to when they get back to the pad and teach them a lesson – the film has much more than that on its mind, say first reviews. According to critics, Promising Young Woman is a candy-colored, pop-soundtracked black comedy (and tragedy and thriller and even a rom-com) that swings for the fences and mostly connects – largely thanks to an insightful script and show-stopping work from Mulligan. Though those who were drawn in by the pulpy trailer and poster may get more than they bargained for. Here are what first reviews are saying about Promising Young Woman. So, what exactly is Emerald Fennell s Promising Young Woman?“Emerald Fennell’s raucous debut, Promising Young Woman, twists its buzzword-laden, spoiler-free synopsis — it’s a #MeToo rape revenge thriller with bite! — into something fresh and totally wild.” Kate Erbland, IndieWire“Promising Young Woman punches its way through rape culture with perfectly manicured nails and a sardonic lipstick smile, and in the end, you may find you re the one who comes out bruised.” Angie Han, Mashable“…an unapologetically bold thriller rooted in the conversations about #MeToo, consent and slut-shaming.” Monica Castillo, The Wrap“Emerald Fennell’s ‘Promising Young Woman’ feels like an important addition in this new canon, an incendiary dramedy that confronts the trappings of the genre as well as societal complacency towards women who speak up against sexual predators.”- Hannah Woodhead, Little White Lies(Photo by © Focus Features)What makes Cassie such a compelling heroine? Cassie is an anti-heroine for our times, and a wholly unique one at that Fennell and Mulligan are unafraid to take [Cassie] her into territory dark enough to question if she’s actually the film’s antagonist, the wrong person to root for.” Kate Erbland, IndieWire“This isn’t a superhero story. Cassie is a real person consumed by vengeance, and while we can revel in her victories, Mulligan never lets us forget that this is not Batman. This is tragedy tempered only by the darkest of comedy.” Matt Goldberg, ColliderWe re Hearing Carey Mulligan is Incredible in the role  “Mulligan is tremendous as Cassie… Her showiest moments come when Cassie is playing vigilante, her voice nearly a growl as she takes unsuspecting men to task for the crimes they were all too excited to commit just moments ago. But she wisely underplays the true depths of Cassie s rage and anguish, refusing us the relief of emotional catharsis.” Angie Han, Mashable“…it’s a meticulous, candy-coloured fairy tale with a blistering central performance from Carey Mulligan that’s quite unlike anything she’s done before.” Hannah Woodhead, Little White Lies“Cassie wears her pickup-bait gear like bad drag; even her long blonde hair seems a put-on. The flat American accent she delivers in her lowest voice register likewise seems a bit meta, though it’s not quite clear what the quote marks around this performance signify. Still, like everything here, this turn is skillful, entertaining and challenging, even when the eccentric method obscures the precise message.” Dennis Harvey, Variety“Despite the exploitation elements, the actor isn’t tossing broad winks to the audience – she plays the pain and heartache and blistering anger of the character, straight. (She can really put a cold chill on a line like ‘I can’t begin to tell you how much I’ve thought about it.’)” Jason Baily, The Playlist(Photo by © Focus Features)Tell Us About the Killer Soundtrack and Stylized look of the film. “The film is filled with inspired soundtrack choices — a strings-heavy take on Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic’ teases before it reveals itself at the perfect moment, and an amusing use of an ‘It’s Raining Men’ cover sells Fennell’s pitch black sense of humor early on — adding a level of care that is sometimes lacking in other elements of the film.” Kate Erbland, IndieWire“The soundtrack features a parade of deliberately vapid pop tunes by the likes of Paris Hilton and the Spice Girls. Yet Anthony Willis’ original score is puzzlingly conventional and earnest, complete with ominous Dolby thumps every time justice is served.” Dennis Harvey, Variety“The sights and sounds of Promising Young Woman are unabashedly girlish…It s an aesthetic choice that feels jarring at first, and then depressingly appropriate. What s more feminine, after all, than having to deal day in and day out with the horrific ramifications of rape culture?” Angie Han, MashableThis isn t just a straight-up revenge thriller, right?“As Cassie attempts to balance two very disparate parts of her life, Fennell’s panache for genre-bending absolutely rules, and ‘Promising Young Woman’ manages to be funny and sexy and smart and absolutely terrifying, all in one stylish package.” Kate Erbland, IndieWire“Promising Young Woman morphs into something more unexpected and complex, shifting in shape and tone a few times over its nearly two-hour run time. A cloud hangs over even its sunniest moments, and some its darkest reveals land with a bark of laugher.” Angie Han, Mashable“The movie’s tone shifts from suspenseful to fun, and there is plenty of that in-between some pretty bleak plot points that are alluded to but not fully explained until near the end of the movie.” Monica Castillo, The Wrap“Watching Promising Young Woman is like watching someone try to juggle brightly colored glass balls in the air. Some of them shatter on the ground, but you can’t help but be awed by the spectacle and the audacity.” Matt Goldberg, Collider(Photo by © Focus Features)Do the shifts in tone always work?“Fennell’s biting script is occasionally punctuated with some big jumps and iffy payoffs, and Cassie’s short-lived turnaround is inspired by an unbelievable and thinly written sequence that doesn’t match the rest of her carefully planned missions.” Kate Erbland, IndieWire“With so much ambition in ‘Promising Young Woman,’ it feels like the movie wants to have its cake and eat it, too. Not every narrative turn feels germane to the story — some appear to be there simply because they’re unexpected.” Monica Castillo, The WrapHow Does Writer-Director Fennell Fare in the Transition from TV to film?“An actress (currently playing Camilla Parker Bowles on ‘The Crown’) and writer (TV’s ‘Killing Eve,’ as well as three novels for younger readers), Fennell works from an arresting script (featured on the Black List in 2018) whose fluctuating levels of irony and dead-seriousness are further complicated — perhaps sometimes just obscured — by her idiosyncratic directorial choices.” Dennis Harvey, Variety Remarkably, Fennell marries heavy subject matter with impressive lightness. Promising Young Woman is a black comedy at heart, with one awkward family dinner scene particularly memorable. Hannah Woodhead, Little White Lies“Fennell’s primary writing credits of note were on the last season of ‘Killing Eve,’ and she’s got a real gift for flipping from dark comedy to honest pathos to ominous rumblings.” Jason Baily, The Playlist“I was absolutely floored by Promising Young Woman, not just because Fennell proves she’s already a master of her craft with her first feature film, but because it’s unapologetic in pointing out complicity.” Matt Goldberg, ColliderNo Spoilers, But What About That Ending? Fennell saves her (and Cassie’s) biggest surprises for its combustible final twenty minutes, taking risks that are admirable even when they don’t seem as if they’re going to pay off. Kate Erbland, IndieWire …its ending will prove, I’m certain, divisive. But there’s no denying that Fennell is playing with dynamite here, and knows it. Jason Baily, The Playlist

Curses and miracles aligned over this Easter weekend as Hollywood awaits the flood of moviegoers headed to theaters next week for the conclusion of the Avengers saga. First things first, though, as one superhero is not done yet — even if he would be wise to fly away from the screeching phantom that challenged him this weekend.King of the Crop: Curse Opens on Top, But May Come In for a Soft Landing(Photo by New Line Cinema)Warner Bros.’ Conjuring Universe film, The Curse of La Llorona, opened to a very respectable .5 million. Not terribly well received after its screening at the SXSW film festival this March, the studio then decided to forego press screenings altogether, and it is sitting on a 32% Tomatometer score. That’s the weakest rating for a wide release horror film since last November’s The Possession of Hannah Grace (20%). Even The Prodigy got a 45%. La Llorona’s opening is well ahead other April horror entries like 2008’s Prom Night (.8 million), Scream 4 (.69), and last year’s Truth or Dare (.66). Those three films finished between million–44 million. It is also ahead of this month’s Pet Sematary, which began with .5 million and currently sits at .5 million, just ahead of the pace of White Noise, which finished with .38 million; less than Mary Lambert’s 1989 Pet Sematary (.46 million). But a potential million finish domestically for La Llorona would be solid for the million production. It is already over million worldwide.Rotten Returns: Penguins March to the Bottom of DisneyNature(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)The DisneyNature films have done fairly well as far as documentaries go. Earth and Chimpanzee are the 6th and 7th highest-grossing docs of all-time, and Oceans, Bears, Monkey Kingdom, and African Cats are still all in the top 20. So they had to be hoping for better with the 90%-rated Penguins, given that March of the Penguins is the second-highest grossing documentary ever with .4 million. Disney’s film has managed just .2 million since opening on Wednesday. Even the weakest entry in the series, Born in China, made .6 million in its first five days. The Top 10 and Beyond: Captain Marvel Hits Milestone Just Before the Endgame(Photo by Marvel Studios)Shazam! dropped to second this weekend, but only with a 29% fall as it joins 15 films to make between 0 million–122 million in 17 days, seven of which are animated. Its .3 million third weekend is the fifth-best amongst them behind just Hitch, Wreck-It Ralph, Coco, and Happy Feet. Those four films grossed between 9 million–210 million, while the 11 films Shazam! beat grossed between 9 million–192 million. DC’s latest could be headed for somewhere in the 0 million range, That is clearly nothing compared to Captain Marvel, which appears to be getting the Black Panther treatment now, as fans want to make sure they are completely caught up for Endgame. It has reached the 0 million domestic mark, and at .098 million, it is the 25th highest-grossing film of all-time. Its 5.7% increase from last week to .1 million this weekend is the eighth-best seventh weekend ever.Another version of a superhero is on display in Breakthrough. Namely, The Almighty, as the power of prayer beats doctors in reviving a drowned boy. Over the weekend the 64%-rated film grossed .1 million, ranking it ahead of Soul Surfer and God’s Not Dead on the faith chart. That’s less than other pre-Easter releases like Heaven Is For Real (.5 million) and Miracles From Heaven (.8 million), each involving children, illness, and revival. Breakthrough has made .6 million since opening Wednesday.Dumbo finally hit 0 million on its 24th day and likely finishes somewhere between 0 million–120 million. That means a worldwide total somewhere in the 0 million range, which may be just enough to be the second-biggest bomb of 2019, leaving the top title to Paramount’s Wonder Park. Annapurna’s United Artists Releasing did no favors for Missing Link, which crash-landed on opening (despite a 90% critical rating). Audiences may have caught on to the critics singing its praises because the film dropped just 26% this weekend — the second smallest drop of the year after The Upside — but it has still only grossed .9 million.(Photo by @ Universal )Last week’s releases fell further down the chart. Little dropped 45 percent from second to fifth and has made million to date. Lionsgate’s Hellboy, though, is a domestic failure. It’s 67.8-percent drop is the third worst of 2019 for a wide release behind Replicas and The Beach Bum. Neil Marshall’s film has made less than Elektra did in its first 10 days; the 2005 film lost more than half its theaters in its third week. If that happens to Hellboy next week, then it may not even reach million. Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy made .1 million in its opening weekend. Finally, Jordan Peele’s Us looks to be preparing for one more Top 10 stay next weekend. Currently on par in weekend five with X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Thor, it may settle in with a final gross between 9 million–181 million; ahead of Get Out’s 6 million. This Time Last Year: Audiences Chose Quiet Over Rampage(Photo by @ Paramount Pictures)A Quiet Place reclaimed the top spot at the box office, edging out Rampage in its second weekend by less than 0,000. I Feel Pretty ( millon) also took third place by less than 0,000 over challenger Super Troopers 2, which made nearly half of its total money this weekend. The Paula Patton thriller, Traffik, opened all the way back in ninth with just .94 million. The top 10 films grossed 6.60 million and averaged 60% on the Tomatometer. This week’s top 10 grossed an estimated .65 million and averaged 61% with critics. On the Vine: Avengers: Endgame Looking to Bust Some Records(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel)The summer movie season once again begins in April and no one wants to get in the way of Avengers: Endgame. Eleven years in the making. Who lives? Who dies? All questions the fans want answered, but Disney is looking at others. Will Endgame best Infinity War’s all-time opening weekend of 7.6 million? (Likely.) Could it actually climb to 0 million by the end of Sunday? (Quite possibly.) Does it best Black Panther’s 0 million to become the highest-grossing Marvel film ever? (Could be.) Ghcxuf 11 Things We Learned from Brie Larson on the set of Captain MarvelMarvel released a new trailer for Captain Marvel on Monday night and it demonstrated the power Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) can wield when faced with Skrulls, space battles and S.H.I.E.L.D. quinjets. It also hinted at the character s sarcastic streak with a few choice bits of dialogue. And, finally, the trailer offered a few sneak peeks into the story with Carol s apparent return to Earth in pursuit of some wayward Skrulls inspiring a search for her real identity.Of course, the trailer still favored its need to tease over explicitly telling us much, but we gleaned some great info from the 2 minute and 18 second preview. Here are five things it made clear.(Photo by © Marvel Studios)The Lady On The Train Is A SkrullIn the wake of the first trailer, many were concerned by the shot of Carol punching an older woman on the train – which we established last time is the Los Angeles Blue Line – but others surmised the woman would in fact turn out to be a Skrull. And those who were correct did not have to wait until March to have their suspicions confirmed. In the new trailer, we see the moment after Carol makes contact in the train car. The Skrull, while remaining in the form of an older woman, fights back in what we hope will be a slightly longer fight scene in the finished film. The Skrulls themselves date back to 1962 s Fantastic Four #2. The race of alien shape-shifters saw Earth as a key strategic vantage point in their war against the Kree. Unfortunately for both sides, the arrival of superheroes on Earth tipped the balance and eventually led to the Avengers becoming involved in the conflict. After thousands of years, the Kree-Skrull War ended thanks to Earth s heroes, but the hostility of both races never abated. In the realm of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it seems the Skrulls are nowhere to be seen in movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Infinity War, suggesting the Kree-Skrull War ended sometime before the first Iron Man. Of course, their ability to mimic other shapes and powers may mean they are still around today, lurking in secret and waiting for the moment to advance their agenda. That was the plot of the 2008 Marvel Comics crossover event Secret Invasion, in which heroes like Carol s good friend Spider-Woman turned out to be Skrull agents embedded sometime before the full Skrull plan was set into motion. The story was controversial, but the premise could form a solid overarching plot going into the MCU s fourth phase. It remains to be seen if this is the direction the Avengers films will take after the fourth film, but if we had to bet on someone being a secret Skrull, we’re saying its Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). He’s too well adjusted to be a real Marvel hero.(Photo by © Marvel Studios)Carol Has AmnesiaWhile the previous trailer strongly hinted at the loss of Carol’s memories, this trailer makes it text. From what we can glean, her life on Earth was likely her true history with a second life superimposed on her memory when she made it to Kree space. The previous trailer left people wondering if she was completely an invention of the Kree who merely dreamed she was human. But learning the truth will still have wide-reaching implications as her loyalty will come into question by the likes of Jude Law’s still unnamed character. Skrull commander Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) may be the primary target, but the Kree Empire may not like the Carol Danvers who comes back from Earth after completing the mission.Maybe that’s why she’s been missing in the years between the film and the modern MCU. Returning to Earth could put the planet in jeopardy as the Kree are not exactly the friendliest humanoid species in the cosmos. Consider Ronan’s (Lee Pace) refusal to honor the treaty signed between the Kree Empire and the Nova Empire in Guardians of the Galaxy. The Kree like making war and, perhaps, Carol led them on a 25-year wild goose chase to keep them away from the planet she suddenly discovered was her real home.(Photo by © Marvel Studios)“Longer, Stronger, Superior”The line, uttered by Annette Benning in the trailer, is a direct callback to the 2014 Captain Marvel story by Kellysue DeConnick and artist David Lopez known as Higher, Further, Faster, More. The story saw Carol move back into space, form a team of her own, and face the precarious state of interstellar politics. That may turn out to be the rough arc of the film as well. Carol s attempt to recover her memories as an Air Force pilot may uncover a secret both the Skrulls and the Kree want to remain hidden, even if Talos appears to offer it to her during one moment in the trailer. But should she learn the truth, it may lead her back into space for a long time to deal with the fallout.(Photo by © Marvel Studios)Mohawks In SpaceThis one may have been a given, but the new trailer finally revealed that Carol’s space Mohawk will be featured in Captain Marvel. The notion that Carol’s space helmet would allow for a Mohawk-shaped slice of her hair to peer through was part of artist Jamie McKelvie’s 2012 redesign for Captain Marvel’s costume – though he admitted early on that Marvel chief creative officer Joe Quesada suggested the idea. The Marvel executive thought it would be Carol s take on the traditional fin atop a Kree helmet. On the page, it reflects her rebellious streak while the rest of the costume indicates her dedication. Also, as McKelvie saw it, the helmet tells you things are about to get serious when she makes it appear. On screen it looks … well, it looks a little big hokey, but it certainly feels right in the trailer’s later moments when Carol takes the fight back into space.Come to think of it, the entire red-blue-gold color scheme of her costume in those scenes looks great, even if they’re less saturated than the colors of her comic book counterpart. It also appears to serve as a visual divide between the Kree, the Skrulls, and whatever Carol turns out to be after he trip to Earth.(Photo by © Marvel Studios)Carol Has Her CatAt the end of the trailer, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) kneels down to pet a cat named Goose. While the S.H.I.E.L.D. records facility appears to be its home, the feline is an obvious reference to the comics, in which Carol owns a small cat named Chewie – itself a reference to Carol’s love of Star Wars. Of course, once she heads back out into space in Higher, Further, Faster, More, Carol discovers Chewie is also an alien. According to Rocket Raccoon, who ends up on Carol s ship, the cat is a really a Flerken. The species takes the form of Earth cats, but can also sprout tentacles and even generate pocket universes. He’s none-too-pleased to see a Flerken on board, but the two eventually come to an accord. It remains to be seen if Goose is also an alien, but it represents a fidelity to the source, even if the production still had to change the name. And by featuring it in the second trailer, one can expect the cat will be more than a throwaway gag.Unless, of course, the cat’s true form will be the focus a post-credit stinger.Captain Marvel is in theaters everywhere March 8, 2019. 😈😈

亚博电子游戏 From Ava Duvernay, Rian Johnson, and Ryan Coogler to Nicole Holofcener, Quentin Tarantino, and Robert Rodriguez, dozens of filmmakers have burst out of the Sundance Film Festival and chased their Hollywood dreams. Some directors, like Cathy Yan, made the leap from small budget indies like Dead Pigs to big budget studio movies like her next project, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). Others, like Steven Soderbergh, have continued to blaze an unconventional path since his debut with Sex, Lies and Videotape over 30 years ago. This year’s group of first-time filmmakers are no less talented, many of them already earning praise from audiences and critics alike. There’s a good chance we may see many more movies from them in the years to come.I Carry You With Me (2020) 97%(Photo by Alejandro López courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: Sony Pictures ClassicsTechnically speaking, I Carry You With Me isn t a true debut for Heidi Ewing, who has been crafting acclaimed feature documentaries for a decade and a half (2006 s Jesus Camp was even nominated for an Oscar). That said, Ewing makes her first foray into narrative filmmaking with this touching drama, which follows two men in Mexico, Iván and Gerardo, as they meet, fall in love and decide to try their luck in the United States. The film moves back and forth through the men’s lives, revisiting different moments from their childhood up to the present day, where they now live in New York and are unable to reunite with their families south of the border because they left without immigration papers. I Carry You with Me won Sundance’s NEXT Innovator Award and the audience award for its category. Carlos Aguilar wrote for Remezcla, “Ravishing and unshakable, Ewing s authentic film feels like the crossbreed between a painful memory and a hopeful dream about a place, a relationship and a fight for acceptance that s not political but entirely humanistic.”Crip Camp (2020) 100%(Photo by Steve Honigsbaum courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: NetflixNicole Newnham and Jim LeBrecht teamed up to revisit a chapter of nearly forgotten history and trace its influence on attendees. In the early ‘70s, not far from Woodstock, an inclusive camp gave unprecedented training and opportunities to people with disabilities. Empowered by their experiences, LeBrecht and his fellow campers and counselors would go on to accomplish many things – including advocating for the Americans with Disabilities Act. Crip Camp won the audience award for its U.S. Documentary category. Esther Zuckerman wrote for Thrillist, “Through incredible archival footage, the documentary shows how campers at Jened were given the freedom they so often lacked in the outside world. There s smoking, sex, partying, and a sense of pure community.”The Forty-Year-Old Version (2020) 98%(Photo by Jeong Park courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: NetflixWritten, directed by, and starring Radha Blank, this dramedy is a loosely autobiographical riff filtered through a classic-looking black-and-white lens. Blank plays a version of herself who’s nervous about approaching 40 as a single woman and struggling artist. Luckily, she rediscovers her love of hip-hop and finds a new source of inspiration for her material. Blank, a playwright and comedian off-screen, brings her sharp wit to the experience of a woman on the edge of a career breaking point, winning the Directing Award in the U.S. Dramatic category at Sundance in the process. Aramide Tinubu wrote in Shadow and Act, “Vulnerable but vibrant in all of it s black, white and grey-hued glory, The 40-Year-Old Version is an ode to BLACK Harlem, fearlessness and the art of putting yourself on.”Some Kind of Heaven (2020) 93%(Photo by Becca Haydu courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: N/ALance Oppenheim’s quirky documentary takes audiences to a picture-perfect retirement community in Florida known as The Villages. Despite dozens of clubs, activities and smiling faces, his camera finds subjects who aren’t so pleased with paradise but are trying to make the best of their remaining years. Writing for Variety, Dennis Harvey said, “Those nostalgic for the fond portraits of eccentric Americana in Errol Morris early work and pretty much everyone else will be delighted by Some Kind of Heaven. This Is Not a Burial, It's a Resurrection (2019) 100%(Photo by Pierrede Villiers courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: N/ALemohang Jeremiah Mosese’s debut opens in the mountains of Lesotho, where an 80-year-old woman loses her son and takes up a new cause in life: to protect her village from bureaucratic plans that would wipe it off the face of the earth. The film won the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Visionary Filmmaking at Sundance. Allan Hunter of Screen International said, “This Is Not A Burial, It s A Resurrection offers a vivid, beautifully crafted reflection on identity, community and the tension between respecting age-old traditions and accepting the seemingly unstoppable march of progress.”Save Yourselves! (2020) 89%(Photo by Matt Clegg courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: N/AIt’s the ultimate sci-fi nightmare: in an effort to disconnect from their addictions to smartphones, a Brooklyn couple, Jack (John Reynolds) and Su (Sunita Mani), go off the grid for some peace and quiet. Unfortunately, they picked the wrong time to swear off the internet, as the planet falls under attack by aliens. Amy Nicholson of Variety wrote about Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson’s comedy, “There s only one joke in Save Yourselves! this hapless generation is doomed! but the survival comedy is delightful from start to apocalypse.”Palm Springs (2020) 95%(Photo by Chris Willard courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: Hulu, NeonMax Barbakow’s time-traveling romantic comedy follows Sarah (Cristin Milioti) and Nyles (Andy Samberg) on the day of Sarah’s little sister’s wedding. When Sarah looks reluctant to give a toast at the party, Nyles steps in to help, and the two strike up a rapport that eventually leads them both into a type of time warp that causes the hellish wedding day to start anew. Kevin Fallon of The Daily Beast said, “There s a massive, Groundhog Day-evoking twist that instantly transports this from cute rom-com to high-concept deconstruction of a rom-com that illuminates our need for connection of course, filtered through the wily charms of Lonely Island.”Promising Young Woman (2020) 90%(Photo by Focus Features)Distributor: Focus FeaturesTurning the revenge narrative upside down, Emerald Fennell’s clever Promising Young Woman follows Cassie (Carey Mulligan) as an old school friend Ryan (Bo Burnham) reenters her life and reminds her of the terrible incident that caused her to drop out of med school. Forever affected by this event, Cassie decides to turn her grief into a teaching moment for those who betrayed her years ago. Joi Childs wrote in Teen Vogue, “A stellar performance from Mulligan paired with an ambitious vision from Fennell comes together to create a story that s a bold takedown of rape culture and those that defend it.”Miss Juneteenth (2020) 99%(Photo by Rambo Elliott courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: N/AChanning Godfrey Peoples’ debut feature follows a mother-daughter story deep in the heart of Texas. Turquoise (Nicole Beharie), the winner of her town’s beauty pageant title of Miss Juneteenth, lives a very different life than the one she once imagined as a reigning champion. She’s just scraping by as a single mom, trying her hardest to stay above the bills and convince her daughter Kai (Alexis Chikaeze) to go after the crown to finish what she started – even if Kai isn’t too keen on following through. Valerie Complex wrote in AwardsWatch, “Miss Juneteenth is written with hope in mind, and the audience will root for Turquoise. Not a tropey caricature that Hollywood likes to box Black actresses into.”Nine Days (2020) 88%(Photo by Wyatt Garfield courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: N/AAlthough divisive among some critics, many supported Edson Oda’s vision for his feature debut, Nine Days. Starring Winston Duke, Zazie Beetz, Benedict Wong, Bill Skarsgård, Tony Hale and David Rysdahl, Nine Days takes place outside the realm of this reality for a mind-bending look at birth, existence, and life. Nine Days also won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award in the U.S. Dramatic category. Brian Tallerico wrote in RogerEbert.com that the film was “one of the most unexpected experiences I ve had in almost a decade of going to Sundance.”Like this?
