Movie theaters are reopening in New York City — some of them anyway. And to 25% capacity. Vaccination levels are exceeding estimations from January and now we have been told that vaccines will be available for every American by the end of May. Normalcy is seemingly coming and people can sense it, especially those at the movie studios who continue to make schedule moves. The waters are being tested. After the numbers posted by Tom Jerry last week does the performance of Raya and the Last Dragon tell us anything more? Well, yes. And no.King of the Crop: Raya s .6 Million Opening Might Be A Sign Of Hope – And Not Quite As Soft As It Seems(Photo by ©Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture)Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon is yet another test of the theatrical/streaming model. Back in September the studio tried Mulan on for size with its Premier Access pricing on Disney+. The result was not nearly as lucrative as they had hoped and it surely has been a factor in the way they have weathered the storm with the release of Black Widow, still scheduled for May 7 in theaters.Mulan only played overseas in theaters and the response to the film was mixed in general (it s Certified Fresh on the Tomatometer but has a Rotten Audience Score of 49%). So we did not have quite the same measuring stick of a day-and-date release with streaming on top of theatrical. That changed with the Warner Bros./HBO MAX deal and began with Wonder Woman 1984 over Christmas weekend. That film opened to .7 million over the holiday with COVID spikes still raging and an option to sit at home comfortably with a HBO MAX subscription for the cost of less than a single ticket price in some markets. That film went on to gross million to date (with another 7 million internationally) and is the third-highest grossing film U.S. theaters have had since last March.(Photo by Warner Bros.)The same studio’s delayed Tenet grossed .9 million and The Croods: A New Age has grossed over .6 million and most of that actually came after it hit VOD on its 24th day of release. It grossed .02 million in theaters up to that point. Flash-forward to last weekend – the first non-holiday weekend since March 13-15, 2020, to post an overall gross of over million, and just the third overall, when Tom Jerry opened to .1 million. That was the second-best opening of that timespan to Wonder Woman 1984’s .7 million. (Tenet’s .2 million also included previews from Tuesday and Wednesday of earlier that week.) That means despite the availability of the HBO MAX option, folks still opted to give those films the best openings of the pandemic era. This brings us to the latest family offering from Disney.Disney – and, frankly, the whole industry – would have loved to have seen a million opening for Raya and the Last Dragon. Even just a few million above Tom Jerry would have sufficed – something to show that, as vaccinations increase and major markets begin to open again, the numbers are headed in the right direction. An .6 million start is not what anyone had hoped. After all, a premium price tag at home is double what a month’s subscription to HBO MAX costs and Tom Jerry opened around 70% higher just a week earlier. (Par for the course, Disney has not released any figures on Raya’s streaming performance.) Sure, Tom Jerry is an established property over the new world-building of Raya, which also opened in 400 fewer theaters, partially thanks to Disney unable to come to terms with bookings at Cinemark, but can it still be spun as a positive?(Photo by Warner Bros.)Another way to look at it is simply within the numbers produced by a similar theater output. Tom Jerry opened in 2,475 theaters with a ,701 per-theater-average. Here are the best openings for films opening between 2,400-2,500 theaters from 2010-2020: Into the Woods (.05 million), Tyler Perry s A Madea Family Funeral (.06), All Eyez On Me (.43), Heaven is For Real (.50), Legion (.50), Death at a Funeral (.21), The Crazies (.06), Den of Thieves (.20), Tom Jerry (.11), Nobody s Fool (.74).Not bad considering Tom Jerry opened with theaters operating at minimal capacity and none opened in New York City. The animated/live-action hybrid grossed another .6 million this weekend. That’s a 53% drop from its opening. The WB/HBO MAX hybrid releases, Wonder Woman 1984 and The Little Things dropped 67.1% and 55.3%, respectively, in their second weekends, so those numbers are headed in the right direction for WB. Tom Jerry’s total stands at .9 million, just behind The New Mutants’ .8 million gross – the fourth-highest during the pandemic. Now let’s look at Raya and the Last Dragon, which opened in 2,045 theaters with an estimated ,205 per-theater-average, and the films from 2010-2020 that also opened between 2,000-2,100 theaters: Think Like a Man (.63 million), The Best Man Holiday (.10), Tyler Perry s Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor (.64), Tyler Perry s Acrimony (.17), Jumping the Broom (.21), Super Troopers 2 (.18), Harriet (.67), Annihilation (.07), The Hundred-Foot Journey (.97), Cloud Atlas (.61), Baggage Claim  (.03), The Witch (.80), Raya and the Last Dragon (.6), The Switch (.43), Black and Blue (.37), Wanderlust (.52).It s a little bit further down the list, but again, theaters are mostly working with 25% capacity on the nearly one-year anniversary of the worst pandemic in 100 years. Raya and the Last Dragon is only the fifth film to open in over 1,000 theaters during this time to post a per-theater-average over ,000. In normal times that would be a disaster. Now, it’s a hopeful sign that we have had that happen two weeks in a row. That’s where we are. In a week-by-week game now seeking the signs that normalcy is coming and each week shall be judged accordingly.Lesser Returns: Chaos Walking and Boogie Fail to Pull People From Their Homes(Photo by © Lionsgate)Family films and wannabe blockbusters are the only films garnering moviegoer’s interest enough right now to get them to leave the house. Chaos Walking may have once believed itself to be the latter, but it was not to be. In a glass-half-full way of thinking, .8 million is the fourth best opening of 2021 behind Tom Jerry, Raya and the Last Dragon, and The Little Things (.7 million), but that s with a 0 million price tag and no streaming profits to think of yet. The basketball drama, Boogie, had the sixth best opening of the year behind those four films and Liam Neeson’s The Marksman (.1 million), starting with just .2 million. On these Dates In Box Office History (Photo by @ Universal)March 5: Two years ago, How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World grossed .6 million on this day to cross the 0 million mark on its 12th day of release. A big record was broken in 2010 when Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland posted the highest Friday opening ever in the month of March with a .8 million start. That bested the three-year record of Zack Snyder’s 300, which opened to .1 million. Alice lost the record two years later to The Hunger Games and currently ranks fifth behind that, Batman v Superman, 2017’s Beauty and the Beast, and Captain Marvel.March 6: The only major milestone crossed on this day also occurred in 2010 when The Blind Side grossed 6,218 on day 107 of its release to cross the 0 million line. Sandra Bullock had won the Oscar for her performance just one week earlier.March 7: In 2017, The Lego Batman Movie made 0,416 to pass 0 million at the box office on its 26th day. It was also the day that Alice In Wonderland became the first film ever in March to gross over 0 million in its opening weekend. Its 6.1 million remains the fifth best opening ever in this month. What Should Have Been: A Different Tom Holland Sci-F Epic And More PranksRaya and the Last Dragon was originally supposed to open over the Thanksgiving holiday last year on November 25. Originally, we were supposed to get the fourth entry in the Jackass film series and a different Tom Holland science-fiction epic in Uncharted. Jackass 4 is now slated to arrive on September 3 and the video game adaptation is now charted for February 11, 2022.Full List of Box Office Results: March 5-7, 2021 When the children s cartoon Avatar: The Last Airbender aired on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008, it was unlike anything kids or adults had ever seen. The show was praised for its art direction, soundtrack, cultural references, humor, and most importantly, its themes, as Avatar was not afraid to explore concepts rarely touched on in youth entertainment. And now, with the show arriving on Netflix after what feels like a 100-year sleep, it is about to be introduced to a whole new audience while simultaneously reminding hardcore fans what made it so special. And to go along with the show s reemergence into the pop culture mainstream, Rotten Tomatoes’ Mark Ellis is delivering five titles you may have missed that tackle many of the same themes, have similar animation styles, and contain characters that follow a similar journey.

2. 公平游戏环境
This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Metal Gear Solid, The Toxic Avenger, and Van Helsing. This WEEK S TOP STORYWARNER BROS. TO DEBUT ENTIRE 2021 SLATE IN THEATERS AND ON HBO MAX SIMULTANEOUSLY(Photo by Chiabella James/©Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.)Just over a year ago, when Disney+ first launched on November 12, 2019, it may have seemed crazy that any streaming app could ever compete with Netflix, which has shows like The Crown, Stranger Things, and The Umbrella Company. That, of course, was before anyone had seen The Mandalorian, and before we knew much about Warner Bros. HBO Max app, the scope of which exploded with this week s big news. Just two weeks after the revelation that Wonder Woman 1984 will debut on HBO Max on December 25, 2020 on the same day it premieres in theaters, Warner Bros. has announced that their entire theatrical slate for 2021 will also debut day-and-date simultaneously on the HBO Max app, at no additional cost (besides the monthly subscription rate), due to the continuing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on movie theaters. We re talking here about 17 movies, both big and small, including Mortal Kombat (1/15/2021), Tom and Jerry (3/5/2021), the Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark (3/12/2021), Godzilla vs Kong (5/21/2021), The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (6/4/2021), Lin-Manuel Miranda s In the Heights (6/18/2021), Space Jam: A New Legacy (7/16/2021), James Gunn s The Suicide Squad (8/6/2021), Dune (10/1/2021), Baz Luhrmann s Elvis (11/5/2021), and The Matrix 4 (12/22/2021), among others. Super unsurprisingly, HBO Max also ended their free trial promotion yesterday. This surprise announcement also came just a week after the news last week that Netflix had offered Warner Bros. 0 million for the streaming rights to Godzilla vs Kong alone. Warner Bros. announcement also left an immediate impact on movie theater exhibition stocks yesterday, the leaders of many of which had the expected negative-to-mixed reactions (the most negative of which came from AMC). You can see new logos for many of these films here, and the official announcement trailer right here. As for what this means for the future of the movie theater business past 2021, no one really knows, but Variety explored some of those questions here.Other Top Headlines1. MARGOT ROBBIE IN TALKS TO REPLACE EMMA STONE ON DAMIEN CHAZELLE S BABYLON(Photo by Andrew Cooper/©Columbia Pictures)After reuniting with his La La Land star Ryan Gosling for the moon landing drama First Man (Certified Fresh at 87%), director Damien Chazelle has been planning on also reuniting with the former s other star, Emma Stone, for Babylon, about Hollywood s transitional period between silent films and the talkies of the 1920 and 1930s. In a surprise move this week, however, Stone has dropped out due to scheduling conflicts (it s unclear what film the conflict is with), with Margot Robbie now in talks for the role, which is believed to be the original It Girl, silent star Clara Bow. If Robbie does sign on for Babylon, the movie will effectively become a reunion project for another film set in Hollywood s past, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (Certifed Fresh at 85%), as the Babylon male lead is Brad Pitt. In related news, actress Li Jun Li (TV s Quantico, The Exorcist) has also been cast as early Chinese American movie star Anna May Wong. Paramount Pictures has scheduled Babylon for an awards-qualifying limited release on Christmas Day, 2021, followed by a wide release on January 7, 2022.2. OSCAR ISAAC TO STAR IN METAL GEAR SOLID ADAPTATION(Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/Netflix)Although his run as Poe Dameron in the final three Star Wars chapters is over, Oscar Isaac continues to stack up new franchises, which before this week s news already included The Addams Family (in which he voices Gomez), the Dune remake (10/21/2021), and the MCU with his Disney+ role as Moon Knight. We can add to that list the long-in-development video game adaptation Metal Gear Solid, in which Isaac will star as franchise star and super spy Solid Snake. With over a dozen main franchise games published since the 1990s, Metal Gear Solid has the potential of being a multi-film franchise on par with Resident Evil. Metal Gear Solid has long been a dream project for director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island, The Kings of Summer), who will be working off a screenplay by Derek Connolly (Safety Not Guaranteed; co-writer of Jurassic World). Other projects Oscar Isaac has in the works include the Ex Machina comic book adaptation The Great Machine and the Hollywood true story Francis and the Godfather.3. GAL GADOT MOVES FROM SUPERHERO TO SUPER SPY WITH HEART OF STONE (Photo by RCF/Everett Collection)As we get closer to the Christmas Day premiere of Wonder Woman 1984 on HBO Max and in theaters, Gal Gadot has found another lucrative genre to add to her filmography in addition to superheroes and (formerly) the racing action of the Fast Furious movies. Gadot has finalized a deal for upwards of million with Skydance Media to star in the spy thriller Heart of Stone, which is being described as a potential franchise-starter in the style of James Bond and Mission: Impossible. Tom Harper, who directed Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones in the hot air balloon adventure The Aeronauts (Certified Fresh at 72%) is currently in talks to direct Heart of Stone from a screenplay by comic book writer Greg Rucka (Netflix s The Old Guard, Certified Fresh at 81%) and screenwriter Allison Schroeder (co-writer of Hidden Figures, Christpher Robin). Other projects Gal Gadot has in the works include her starring role in Cleopatra and the Netflix action movie Red Notice, along with Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds.4. PETER DINKLAGE TO WIELD THE MIGHTY MOP OF THE TOXIC AVENGER(Photo by HBO)For years now, whenever fans speculate about the casting of a possible Alpha Flight movie, one of the inevitable picks is Peter Dinklage as Puck (because of their similarity in height). Instead, when Dinklage did actually make his debut in a Marvel Studios movie, it was in X-Men: Days of Future Past (Certified Fresh at 90%) as the scientist Bolivar Trask, and that role was later followed by a turn as Eitri, King of the Dwarves, in Avengers: Infinity War (Certified Fresh at 85%). As it turns out, however, Dinklage s first true superhero role will be one with indie filmmaking roots far outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe: in the remake of Troma s The Toxic Avenger (Fresh at 70%). Troma s Lloyd Kaufman is co-producing the reboot for Legendary Pictures, the same production company that gave us Christopher Nolan s Dark Knight trilogy and Warner Bros current Godzilla franchise. Dinklage s reboot of The Toxic Avenger will reportedly subvert the superhero genre in the style of Marvel s Deadpool, which makes sense when you find out that it will be directed by actor Macon Blair (Blue Ruin), who made his directorial debut with I Don t Feel at Home in This World Anymore (Certified Fresh at 89%).5. HARRIET STAR CYNTHIA ERIVO TAKES ON ANOTHER 19TH CENTURY BIOPIC (Photo by Eli Winston/Everett Collection)Broadway star Cynthia Erivo was one of last year s Best Actress nominees for her role as Harriet Tubman in Harriet (Fresh at 74%), and now she s found another biopic set in the 19th century, as she is attached to produce and star in an untitled film about the life of African princess Omoba Aina (A.K.A. Sara Forbes Bonetta), who was enslaved and then eventually became the goddaughter of Queen Victoria of England. The film will be partly adapted from the biographical book At Her Majesty s Request. Benedict Cumberbatch will also be one of the project s producers, but it s not yet known if he will also take on one of the film s historical roles.6. RON HOWARD S THAI CAVE RESCUE DRAMA THIRTEEN LIVES TO START FILMING SOON (Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/©Universal Pictures)Just a couple of weeks after the Netflix premiere of his latest film as director, Hillbilly Elegy (Rotten at 25%), Ron Howard is already getting ready for his next film as director. That movie will be Thirteen Lives, about the cave rescue effort in Thailand in 2018, which will start filming in Australia in March, 2021. Howard s Thirteen Lives now also stands out as the possible winner in a race to get a major movie about the incident produced after a surprising six different projects were confirmed to be in development within a few months of the disaster. Thirteen Lives will be a joint production between Howard and Brian Grazer s Imagine Entertainment and MGM. No casting has been announced yet.7. UNIVERSAL S MONSTER MOVIES REBOOTS WILL INCLUDE VAN HELSING (Photo by (c)Universal courtesy Everett Collection)Universal s attempts to move on from the Dark Universe idea got rolling in style earlier this year with The Invisible Man (Certified Fresh at 91%), and they continue to develop films based on their classic monster lineup almost more intensely than they did before. The 2004 Hugh Jackman action movie Van Helsing (Rotten at 24%) was a famous misfire, but the vampire-hunting Dracula character himself appears to still have fans at Universal, because the studio is moving forward with plans for a Van Helsing reboot. Universal Pictures is teaming up with producer James Wan (Aquaman, The Conjuring) for a new Van Helsing film to be directed by Julius Avery, who in 2018 gave us the Nazi zombie movie Overlord (Certified Fresh at 81%). It s not yet known what sort of tone the new Van Helsing will take, or whether it will directly connect to other Universal monster movies (either before or after Van Helsing). Julius Avery will also be rewriting a pre-existing Van Helsing reboot screenplay draft written by screenwriter Eric Pearson (Marvel s Black Widow; co-writer of Thor: Ragnarok).8. THIS WEEK IN JASON STATHAM: EASTERN PROMISES SPIN-OFF, MOVIE WITH AUBREY PLAZA (Photo by Universal Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Every once in a while, an actor will be lucky enough to have two new movies announced in the same week. This week, it s Jason Statham, and neither movie is a sequel to any of his recent hits like The Meg or Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw, but one of them was almost a sequel. Jason Statham is in advanced talks to star in the Russian crime thriller Small Dark Look, which was originally developed as a sequel to the Viggo Mortensen drama Eastern Promises (Certified Fresh at 89%). It sounds, however, like elements of the movie have been changed (notably, probably changing the character from the one played by Viggo Mortensen), so that it s no longer a sequel. The other Jason Statham movie to make the news this week is an untitled thriller to be directed by Guy Ritchie, whose first two features, 1998 s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (Certified Fresh at 75%) and 2001 s Snatch (Fresh at 73%), helped launch Statham s movie career. The new project, which was previously titled Five Eyes, will team Statham up with Parks Recreation star Aubrey Plaza as an international super spy who must work with a high-tech CIA expert on a globe-trotting mission to infiltrate a billionaire arms broker. This project appears to be one that Ritchie is taking on while others, including Disney s live-action sequel to 2019 s Aladdin (Rotten at 57%), continue to be developed. On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.亚博竞彩网站In Josephine Decker’s bitingly dark Shirley, Invisible Man star Elisabeth Moss plays novelist Shirley Jackson, most famous for The Haunting of Hill House and a notorious New Yorker story that made her, at one stage, the most reviled writer in America. Moss is earning major acclaim for her performance in the Sundance breakout – and some early awards buzz. With the movie now available to stream, Moss sat down with Rotten Tomatoes to talk about her approach to playing a version of Jackson that was true to her essence, but which allowed room for her own interpretation. And it all started with a herniated disc.

The stand-out episode of Netflix s latest horror hit The Haunting of Bly Manor draws inspiration from a Henry James short story that, according to series creator Mike Flanagan, had not previously been adapted.A follow-up to The Haunting of Hill House, the new series explores several tragic love stories as it follows American au pair Dani Clayton (Victoria Pedretti), who accepts a job in England looking after orphaned siblings Miles (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) and Flora (Amelie Bea Smith) while supernatural phenomena swirl around her. If the scenario sounds familiar, the season was primarily inspired by James much-adapted classic novella The Turn of the Screw. But other works by the iconic author add to the story layers that unfold at Bly.(Photo by EIKE SCHROTER/NETFLIX © 2020)Episode 8 takes the same name as the previously overlooked James tale, The Romance of Certain Old Clothes,  and acts mostly as a standalone episode that detours to the 18th century to reveal the origin of Bly Manor s ghost story. Flanagan called it more aggressive and vicious than anything else Henry James ever wrote, during a virtual press conference for the series.Unlike his work with Hill House, Flanagan made a concerted effort to remove himself as the sole creative force behind every episode of Bly Manor. But for the season s penultimate episode of, he admits he did everything in his power to be on set every day. I was never more anxious to get to set just to sit at the monitor and watch than I was during episode 8, because it was so cool. It was the kind of episode I just wanted to see as a fan, Flanagan said. The Romance of Certain Old Clothes is a brooding gothic romance and tragic love song to the genre, with visual storytelling to make fans of classic horror cinema rejoice. The episode is the most haunting hour of TV you ll see this year. Here s why.SPOILER ALERT: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS DETAILS ABOUT EPISODE 8 OF THE HAUNTING OF BLY MANOR. STOP HERE IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED THE EPISODE.It Gives a Heartbreaking Backstory to Bly Manor s Curse(Photo by EIKE SCHROTER/NETFLIX © 2020)Flanagan said he had planned to explore the origins of Hill House’s hauntings, but that production didn t have the budget or time to see its backstory brought to life. After the series remarkable reception on Netflix, however, Flanagan clearly had more flexibility for his next The Haunting series.Episode 8 throws us way back in time to recount the lives of Viola (Kate Siegel) and Perdita (Katie Parker), sisters left with an uncertain future in the manor after their father passes away. Practical Viola marries her distant cousin Arthur, heir to the manor (since it was illegal for women to inherit property).A true romance blossoms between the two, and soon their daughter Isabel is born. But, as with most gothic romances, the story takes a tragic turn, and Viola falls ill with tuberculosis. While Viola is locked away in a room, coughing up blood, romance between Arthur and Perdita develops and tensions rise between the sisters. One day, it all comes to a head, and Perdita murders Viola in her bed.(Photo by EIKE SCHROTER/NETFLIX © 2020)Perdita marries Arthur, of course, and the two raise Isabel, but financial struggles leave the couple s relationship strained. Perdita wants to sell Viola s fine jewelry and clothes that are locked away in a chest in the attic, but Arthur refuses. He made a promise to Viola that Isabel would receive those treasures once she was of age. But Perdita goes against his wishes and opens the truck, and Viola s enraged spirit chokes her sister to death. After Arthur finds Perdita dead, he deduces that the trunk is cursed and throws it into the lake, before taking Isabel and moving far away from Bly Manor. The sisters ghosts remain stuck to the property, however, to form the haunting foundation that the rest of the season s unfortunate events are built upon.Like Episode 6 of The Haunting of Hill House, This One Is a Standout(Photo by Steve Dietl/Netflix (The Haunting of Hill House)) The Romance of Certain Old Clothes holds just as much importance to the Haunting franchise as Hill House s sixth episode, Two Storms, did two years ago. This episode doesn t come with all the bells and whistles that made Two Storms such a milestone — you won t find any 18-minute-long tracking shots here and that episode focused on the generational trauma that permeated the Crain family, both in their present and in their past. It was a poignant exploration of grief that relied on some dazzling camera work and blocking to tie everything together.(Photo by EIKE SCHROTER/NETFLIX © 2020)Bly Manor is a different beast — at its core, even more of a ghost story than Hill House’s exploration of family trauma. Carla Gugino s narrator figures prominently in this episode, and her comforting diction, along with the detailed set dressing, intricate costume design, and the guidance of up-and-coming director Axelle Carolyn — who Flanagan calls a student of black-and-white horror cinema — The Romance of Certain Old Clothes delivers the context that connects the past and present of the series. Everybody was always looking at episode 8 as our chance to do what we love the most, Flanagan admits. It s what made us want to do The Haunting and to look back at [director] Robert Wise and [director of The Innocents] Jack Clayton. These incredibly influential movies from the early ’60s, which were done so perfectly, they ve rendered it pointless to try to do a faithful feature adaptation of these texts. So it was one of those episodes, much like episode 6 in season 1, that we were preparing for and building up to the entire time. We shot it last. Kate Siegel s Lady of the Lake Is the Terrifying Key to Bly Manor s Mysteries(Photo by Netflix)The episode s timeline charges forward once Viola dies, showing the manor succumbing to decay and plague victims taking shelter under its roof. Throughout, Viola s ghost is anchored to that chest underwater, her afterlife focused on reunification with her daughter.Viola emerges from the water nightly to roam the grounds, eventually losing her face as the memory of who she was fades. When she disappears entirely, the monstrous Lady of the Lake emerges. The faceless being we see earlier in the season kills without remorse, taking out anyone who gets in her path as she makes her way up to the manor s bedroom, looking for young Isabel.

Charlize Theron and Renee Zellweger. (Photo by Robyn Beck/AFP via Getty Images)The Academy Awards held its annual nominee luncheon Monday at a new location, the Dolby Ballroom at the Loews Hotel in Hollywood. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts Sciences made the decision two years ago to shorten this year s awards season by two weeks, which resulted in the loss of their preferred home for the event, the Beverly Hilton.Recommended: The Full List of 2020 Oscar NomineesRecommended: Oscar Nominees Gallery – See the Stars with their Certified Fresh trophiesA final chance to socialize with fellow honorees and snap the iconic class photo, the AMPAS luncheon is often touted as a highlight of the season. Littered with stars like Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Charlize Theron, it s hard to walk three steps without bumping into an iconic filmmaker. We spotted Matthew A. Cherry, director of animated short favorite Hair Love, snapping a picture with Knives Out director Rian Johnson and chatting animatedly with double-nominee Cynthia Erivo (Best Actress, Best Song), and Robert De Niro laughing with co-star Al Pacino in front of the DJ booth. But the event isn t just about star-gazing – though it definitely is that. Read below for our recap of highlights from this year s Oscar nominees luncheon.A shortened season keeps some stars awayCynthia Erivo and Brad Pitt. (Photo by Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images)As always, the luncheon was a star-studded affair, but it was hard not to notice the note-worthy names who opted to stay home. Supporting Actor nominees Tom Hanks, Joe Pesci, and Anthony Hopkins did not attend, while Best Actor noms Antonio Banderas, Adam Driver, and Joaquin Phoenix also skipped the lunch. Banderas is still on the stage in Spain, while Driver just finished a week at SNL, and our media-shy Oscar frontrunner Phoenix (an advocate for the luncheon s choice to feature a plant-based menu) is likely taking a breather before the last stretch. Bombshell nominee Margot Robbie, who s currently on the Birds of Prey press tour, and Saoirse Ronan were also absent. Most shockingly, double nominee Scarlett Johansson stayed away from her first invitation to the event. Another unfortunate casualty of the shortened awards season is that many stars are likely too exhausted from the non-stop stream of parties, screenings, awards shows, and speeches.1917 embraces its frontrunner statusDean-Charles Chapman, Krysty Wilson-Cairns, and George MacKay for 1917. (Photo by Bryan Beasley)1917 stars George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman showed up to celebrate with cinematographer Roger Deakins, director Sam Mendes, composer Thomas Newman, and co-writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns who, were all nominated. The lack of acting nominations didn t dampen the two young actors spirits, either.  Are you kidding? Today s great! said MacKay when we asked how he was doing before the event kicked off. And he has reason to be optimistic: 1917 has been raking in the hardware, recently adding a Producers Guild win and a Directors Guild win for the one-shot WWII epic. Mendes also seems to have finally embraced his frontrunner status; gone is the shocked expression he gave after his Best Director and Best Drama wins at the Golden Globes. The Skyfall director walked into the luncheon beaming, later snapping a comical photo with fellow nom Rian Johnson, who forwarded it to friend Edgar Wright, who then affectionately posted it on Twitter. Cinematography favorite Roger Deakins also took his buzz in stride, as is his famously laid-back nature; he has been here before, he joked, adding, I just try to enjoy the day. Parasite team continues to woo voters and rack-up frequent flyer milesTaika Waititi and Bong Joon-ho Joel MearesLast year, Lady Gaga was the biggest source of fascination for the Oscar elites. This year, that distinction falls to Parasite director Bong Joon-ho and his ever-present translator and fellow filmmaker Sharon Choi. Choi, who has been everywhere with Joon-ho this season delivering perfectly timed translations, joked that she might stumble at the finish. She told Rotten Tomatoes, I am almost scared the Oscars is where I might finally mess up. We re betting that won t happen, but we re all but assured to see Choi on the Oscar stage and the film s team will undoubtedly continue to own every room they step in. A constant of the season has been that when Team Parasite arrives, everyone – from Brad Pitt to Quentin Tarantino – takes notice. Parasite helmer Bong had to hop a flight to Rotterdam straight after the luncheon, where he is set to premiere a black-and-white print of his socio-political thriller at the Rotterdam Film Festival.QT looks to make history with another Screenplay winQuentin Tarantino. (Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)Once Upon A Time In Hollywood writer-director Quentin Tarantino also made an entrance, sporting a throwback bowling shirt and a pretty happy disposition considering the grind of the season. With a steady energy that hasn t wavered over the past weeks, the two-time Oscar winner chatted animatedly with his fellow nominees and the assorted press. He told Rotten Tomatoes that he obviously hopes the film wins in every category, but the Best Original Screenplay Oscar would be especially meaningful for him. It s a historic thing only one other guy has won three Original Screenplay Oscars, he said. If he wins for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, he would join Woody Allen (he s the one other guy ) and be on track to maybe surpass him with his rumored final film. And the class favorites are
Although superhero shows make up the bulk of Comics on TV options, the format can get a little tiresome at times. Whether it be repeated plot points or uninspired antagonists – we’re looking at you, Ricardo Diaz – the grind of a superhero show can lead to a certain amount of fatigue. This goes double for a casual viewer less interested in the crossover potential of the Arrowverse or the late, lamented Marvel universe on Netflix. But the first half of 2019 has seen a number of startling and well-produced superhero shows redefine and revitalize what the genre can be. Instead of season-long big bads strung across 22-episodes, the heroes face existential crisis in shorter seasons. And in at least one case, Amazon’s adaptation of The Boys, the supers are anything but heroes. In fact, the series, and its unique take on super-powered people, has revitalized the superhero show as a whole in just 8 episodes thanks to its adventurous storytelling. So let’s take a look at some of the ways it uses capes, heat vision, PTSD, and old-fashion love stories to give the superhero genre a fresh perspective.Spoiler Alert: The following discusses plot points from the entire first season of Amazon series The Boys. Stop now if you haven t watched every episode. It Adapts Finite Source MaterialOne of the key things setting The Boys – and some of the other 2019 debuts, in fact – apart from an Arrowverse or a Marvel show is its source material, the 72-issues series (and some special releases) by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The finite nature of the original comic book makes it more like a novel than the never-ending battle in the pages of The Flash or X-Men. This means the show has a sense of direction even the Marvel series on Netflix could not necessarily claim beyond the first season of Jessica Jones and, to a certain extent, the third season of Daredevil. And it is the sort of thing unheard of in the shows of the Distinguished Competition.Knowing the shape of the full story ahead of time means the chance to properly plot it. In the case of The Boys, this is best illustrated in the way Hughie (Jack Quaid) comes to know the other members of Billy Butcher’s (Karl Urban) team, how they all meet the Female (Karen Fukuhara), and how most them come to rely on a super in critical moment. It is different from the books, but it delivers characters precisely when they are need — particularly Frenchie (Tomer Capon). Yes, not every plot point is expertly timed across the first season, but for the most part, The Boys asks questions and answers them with a rare precision. It Knows When To Walk Away From That AdaptationModern finite comics share more in common with novels than the ongoing travails of Superman and Spider-Man. It is a definite benefit to comic book storytelling overall, but it means fans of titles like The Boys will expect certain moments to appear in the series almost verbatim. When Rotten Tomatoes talked to executive producer Eric Kripke about key scenes, he said balancing those expectations with the understanding that TV is a different format is key to producing a good adaption.“Luckily, I m a huge fan of the material, so the scenes that are important to the fans, and that the fans love, I love too,” he explained. At the same time, it was important to break down the comic and determine “what scenes fit in the particular version of the story we re telling and fit the tone and fit the style.” Kripke expected at the time that “there will inevitably be fans that are unhappy with some things that I didn t include. But, he continued, “it s my responsibility to tell the best story that I know how to tell, and I try to use as many of the pieces of the book as I can, but some of them just don t fit in our version of the story.”Sometimes, elements of a story change for more practical reason, like Butcher’s dog Terror. Glimpsed in one or two flashbacks on the television series, Terror was almost an extra appendage of Billy’s in the comic. But when facing the realities of having a dog on set among all the other technical challenges of a superhero show, Kripke made a tough decision. “It literally would have been impossible to finish the show on our schedule with our ambition if, on top of everything else we were doing, we had a dog,” he explained.Of course, at Comic-Con, Kripke suggested there may be a chance for Terror to be part of Billy’s present-day life in season 2.Beyond purely practical concerns regarding Terror, readers of The Boys will note a change in tone. The darkness and despair beautifully rendered by Robertson in the pages of the comic book have been toned down for a brighter world. It also introduces Starlight (Erin Moriarty) in a position of strength, re-casting her as the story s heart from the get-go. That greater focus on the light in the initial episodes counterpoints the darkness in the hearts of characters like Homelander (Antony Starr) and A-Train (Jessie T. Usher), while making Hughie’s entry into Butcher’s world more inviting. At least, inviting to viewers ready to look at the violence Hughie witnesses with a more satirical slant. It Quickly Complicates the CharactersThanks to that strong sense of direction, characters accrue a level of complication at A-Train’s pace. Consider how corrupt he seems at the onset or when he kills his secret girlfriend. But the sense he is a one-note character is soon shattered when a reality show producer asks him to omit the painful gang-related truth in his origin story. And as his body continues to break down from the effects of Compound V, we see he is as much of a victim of Vought’s machinations as Annie (Moriarity) or Hughie. Sure, a viewer might walk away from the season still hating A-Train’s guts, but at least it comes from a richer understanding of his situation. He is getting ground inside the machine. As the season progresses, we see the caricatures of episode 1 give way to more complex characters with each passing scene. Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott) goes on an odyssey to realize her lost optimism. She may not resemble the hero Annie is turning into, but even those few words of encouragement she offers at the end of the season indicate a positive change. Or, at least the sort of positive change we can hope to see from these characters. But that also means Maeve could easily fall back into her old ways when we see her again next year.Meanwhile, Butcher defies traditional classifications of hero and anti-hero. He’s doing this all in memory of his wife, but at some point, one gets the impression he just needed the excuse in order to start killing. He may not grin the way Homelander does while offing an enemy, but a similar satisfaction is present. And considering the season ends with the two of them at the same place, we can expect some discussion of their commonalities during an uncomfortable backyard barbecue.

Netflix’s new series, Jupiter’s Legacy, is a breed apart from many superhero series. The program focuses on the Union of Justice, a group of superheroes who began working together in the 1930s, but lived well into the 21st century and now face the prospect of handing their work off to their children; a second generation of various talents, constitutions, and interests.Although some of its iconography will seem familiar, the story sets out to be a family drama of powers, resentments, high expectations, and at least one masterplan worthy of a Lex Luthor or Hydra. And viewers coming fresh to the series will find a number of unexpected things.Rotten Tomatoes spoke to some of the cast and Jupiter’s Legacy co-creator Mark Millar to determine the five things you need to know before venturing into the show.1. It Is a Generational Saga(Photo by Netflix)The notion of generational superheroes – that is, parent and child (or a close relation) sharing abilities and a costumed identity – is not exactly a new idea in comic books. Titles like Starman and The Flash dived deep into the idea in the 1990s. Also, the more recent Flash TV series broached the topic a few years ago while still fighting a villain of the year, and Superman Lois sees Clark learning how to be there for his teenage sons. But in the case of Jupiter’s Legacy, facing the reality that a younger generation needs to step up is very much the theme of the show.“[It’s] a metaphor for how you can pass on traditions, how you can pass on family values, how you can pass on love and connection,” as star Josh Duhmel, who plays the premiere hero Utopian, put it. “I think that there s a lot to be said for how you raise your kids and how important it is to connect with them or there s a good chance you lose them.”Indeed, the possibility of losing his children quickly becomes one of Utopian’s concerns.(Photo by Marni Grossman/Netflix)As the program begins, his son Brandon Sampson (Andrew Horton) – aka Paragon – makes a choice Utopian disapproves of, setting into motion a lot of soul searching among the Union and their children about what they really want for the future.“I think Brandon puts an enormous amount of pressure upon himself, which definitely doesn t help things,” Horton said when asked about Utopian’s expectations for his son. Brandon and [his sister] Chloe are told by their father that these gifts are to help other people less fortunate. That s an onus on them to use their powers for good and to maybe follow in their parents footsteps. But it s never explicitly said within the show that this is what you must do: You must be the same as us.' Nevertheless, Brandon takes onboard the idea that he should be just like his father and “trips himself up because he s a more flawed human being.”In Horton’s mind, he s kind of always going to be set up for failure when you ve got the Utopian as someone to follow. And to some extent, that fear of failure leads to the choices his sister Chloe (Elena Kampouris) and their cousins make both before the story begins and after Brandon s tactical error.2. It Uses the Concept of the Justice League as Familiar Grounding(Photo by Netflix)Although the original members of the Union have similar abilities, aspects of their look and more specialized powers will remind viewers of DC Comics’ Justice League of America. According to Millar, using that group’s dynamic over, say, the Avengers, is a completely intentional choice.“That s a perfect entry point for the mainstream audience,” he explained. “Those kinds of characters we grew up with also stretch all the way back 5,000 years to the Greek myths and then, really, the Egyptian myths, [and] in some ways go back to Sumer as well, 11,000 years ago — Babylonian myths.”The archetypal stature means a character like Utopian is immediately recognizable even if he has longish white hair and a beard when he first arrives on the scene.“The world is very, very plugged in to the idea of [this] bunch of people: You know, there s a Superman-like guy, there s a Wonder Woman–like woman, in the same way we had Zeus and Jupiter and we had Aphrodite and everything,” Millar said. “These archetypes have been around for a long time, in a way that other superheroes don t really have. There s a pantheon of gods that the Justice League really feels like [and] that people get.”Of course, testing those archetypes via their children becomes one of the key sources of tension within Jupiter’s Legacy.3. It Challenges a Very Specific Code of Superhero Conduct(Photo by Netflix)Taking their cues from pop culture antecedents like the Justice League, the first generation Union members adhere to a strict code Sheldon Sampson (Utopian s civilian name) put down during their founding nearly a century before the story begins: their powers must always be used to help others, they must never govern over the nation, and they do not kill. The code is rooted in Millar’s appreciate of the American culture he grew up experiencing via imported television, film, and music, but it also sets down three easy-to-understand concepts that, nonetheless, lead to a lot of heartache when one must live by them.Duhamel, as himself, admitted he has some issues with the code, but absolutely agrees with his character that super-powered people should not use their powers to force a role in government.“If you give somebody [that] much power, that s just dangerous. They should just be there to serve,” he said.Nevertheless, the prohibition against killing left Duhamel with more angst because he can see situations where lethal force is understandable. One hypothetical he offered will strike a chord with parents: “If somebody is going to take my son out, I m going to take them out first, no matter what.”Conversations with the writers and producers put him more at ease with Sheldon’s absolutely belief that there is always a better way and, as viewers will see, Sheldon always adheres to the code.(Photo by Marni Grossman/Netflix)Mike Wade, who plays original Union member Fitz Small (aka The Flare), thinks his character’s appreciation of the code changes across the 60 or so years he operates as a superhero.“Fitz, I would say, sees Sheldon as an older brother; somebody that Fitz looks up to. A lot of people look up to Sheldon, he explained. So initially, Fitz felt that [same way about the code as Sheldon], but through battle and through sacrifice, [he] might ve changed and might not feel so strongly about the code like a lot of other people do.”Tenika Davis plays Fitz’s daughter Petra – the new Flare – and represents the younger generation on the issue.“Things like the code have to be amended and changed as things develop and grow,” Davis said. “I think the code is one of those things that is a bit outdated. So we respect it for the foundation it provided, but at the same time we re like, Yeah, it probably needs a few updates.' (Photo by Steve Wilkie/Netflix)And, as viewers will see, there is no easy answer on how to respect the code or augment it to meet the challenges both generations of the Union face in the series.“I think it s such a complex issue,” Leslie Bibb added. Bibb plays Grace Sampson, a hero in her own right — the beloved Lady Liberty — and Utopian’s wife. While both the actress and her character see the code as a way of preventing the supers from becoming judge, jury, and executioner, they also understand why some of the younger generation will chafe against it as they face more powerful and ruthless adversaries.“I don t think it s black and white. I think that that s sort of what Grace s dilemma is [as the story unfolds],” she said. “I think that is a cool thing about the show. It doesn t really give you an answer. It poses these questions and hopefully, you walk away and you start thinking, and maybe it starts a conversation about something bigger.”4. It Is Not Ashamed of Superhero Costumes(Photo by Steve Wilkie/Netflix)Another cool thing about the show: it literally wears the pulpy inspiration of the 1930s and ’40s superheroes on its sleeves. Sure, the younger generation may go for the black leather look of modern heroes, but the original Union members proudly wear garish colors into the 21st century.“When I think about my favorite costume ever, costume design ever, in a movie, I would say it s [from the] 1978 Superman,” Millar said. The suit, designed by Yvonne Blake, highlighted the design worn by the Man of Steel in the comics during the 30 years prior to the film. “She didn t really rethink it. She just thought, ‘What does Superman look like?’ and just made that work in real life. We did the same with this, we made it look like the heroes of that period. So the Golden Age heroes would have looked weird if they d had armor or oddly textured, metallic costumes, he said. They just look like superheroes in the very traditional sense, which I love. Nevertheless, the costumes may look strange to viewers as the program begins, but remember: the first generation Union members still represent a 1930s ideal of superheroes.5. It Will Surprise Readers of the Comic Book(Photo by Netflix)While the series is quite faithful to the comics – and its companion piece, Jupiter’s Circle – it will contain a few surprising changes as it unfolds across its eight episodes. But even before those developments transpire, readers may find they like Sheldon’s brother Walter (Ben Daniels) a lot more than they did in the comics.Although Daniels denied any conscious attempt to bring viewers to the character s side, he definitely wanted to convey “what it was like to have Clint Eastwood as your brother, who sails through life when you find it incredibly difficult.”In both the comic book and the show, Walter tends to be the first to naysay Sheldon – even after they get their powers – but as Daniels saw it, “He feels very downtrodden. He s a highly volatile person and highly sensitive person, and he has trouble regulating those emotions.”And though much of his anxiety melts away after his powers give him an almost universal telepathic range, the scars of his younger days remain.“I don t think it s about making him sympathetic. I think it s about making his actions 100 years later more understandable,” he added.

Gamers, rejoice! The Last of Us is getting series treatment from HBO. Taika Waititi is joining forces with Netflix for two animated series based on Roald Dahl s Charlie and the Chocolate factory, Christopher and Bobby will host a Sopranos podcast, and the coronavirus strikes TV — all in this week s top headlines.TOP STORYThe Last of Us Film Set Aside for HBO Series AdaptationAward-winning video game writer Neil Druckmann and Emmy-winning Chernobyl writer and creator Craig Mazin will adapt video game The Last of Us for an HBO series.“From the first time I sat down to talk with Craig, I was equally blown away by his approach to narrative and his love and deep understanding of The Last of Us,” said Druckmann, creative director of Naughty Dog, the game development studio behind The Last of Us and Uncharted game series and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment.“With Chernobyl, Craig and HBO created a tense, harrowing, emotional masterpiece. I couldn’t think of better partners to bring the story of ‘The Last of Us’ to life as a television show. I’m beyond excited to collaborate with them,” Druckman said in a statement.Originally planned as a film from Sony and Screen Gems, that effort was abandoned as even Druckmann expressed his own disenchantment with the project.HBO provided the series description in a statement:The story takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival. The HBO series will cover the events of the original game, which was written by Druckmann, with the possibility of additional content based on the forthcoming game sequel, The Last of Us Part II, which will release on May 29, 2020.Druckmann and Mazin will write and executive produce; Carolyn Strauss (Emmy-winner for HBO’s Game of Thrones and Chernobyl) also executive produces along with Naughty Dog President Evan Wells. The project is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television and in association with PlayStation Productions. The Last of Us is the first television series from PlayStation Productions.Taika Waititi Will Develop Two Animated Series Based on Charlie and the Chocolate FactoryNetflix has found the golden ticket: The streaming service will host two animated series from JoJo Rabbit Oscar winner Taika Waititi, both offering fresh takes on the Roald Dahl classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The first series will be set in the world of Willy Wonka, with characters from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, while the second ‘toon will specifically feature Waititi’s version of the Oompa Loompas, those singing Wonka delights.“If (Roald) Dahl had created a character of a filmmaker to adapt his work, I’m pretty sure he would have created Taika,” Netflix Vice President of Original Animation Melissa Cobb said in a statement. The Wonka projects are far from Waititi’s only upcoming works on TV. He will also reportedly return to work on season 2 of Disney+’s The Mandalorian (after directing the first season finale), and will also return for the sophomore season of FX’s comedy What We Do in the Shadows, after serving as co-writer, director, and executive producer on the series’ debut season. As previously reported, he’s also working with Jude Law to develop The Auteur, a half-hour horror-comedy series for Showtime, about a movie producer whose last release flopped, sending him into a desperate state during which he accidentally traps his cast and crew on a backlot with serial killer.Coronavirus Disrupts TV Production and Events(Photo by Monty Brinton/CBS)The coronavirus (Covid-19) not only has film studios rescheduling their features, it is leaving its mark on the TV industry, as well.First Amaz
