We learned later that the film would be a reboot instead of a sequel, and casting announcements began to roll in, starting with Margot Robbie (as Harley Quinn) and Idris Elba (who specifically isn t replacing Will Smith as Deadshot), and eventually including returning stars Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, and Joel Kinnaman. More casting announcements came fast and furious after that, but on Friday, just as this article was set to publish, Gunn himself took to Twitter to officially confirm the full cast of The Suicide Squad for the first time, along with the words Don t get too attached. In other words, we can fully expect that not all of the cast will survive to the end of the movie. The Suicide Squad starts filming this month, with a scheduled release date of August 6, 2021.Other Top Headlines1. JOAQUIN PHOENIX S JOKER WILL NEVER MEET ROBERT PATTINSON S THE BATMAN(Photo by Niko Tavernise/Warner Bros., Warner Bros.)It s a good time to be bad for Joaquin Phoenix s Joker, which currently has a Tomatometer score of 76%, won the top prize at the Venice Film Festival, and is projected to make around million at the box office when it opens in October. All of that already has pundits speculating on Phoenix s chances of replicating Heath Ledger s Academy Awards win as the Joker in The Dark Knight. So, it s not unreasonable to wonder if he might reprise the role to square off against Robert Pattinson s The Batman (6/25/2021), either in that film or in future sequels. Well, Joker director Todd Phillips was asked that exact question this week, and he replied with, No. Definitely not. Asked again a few days later, he said basically the same thing, but with a few more words, I don t see it connecting to anything in the future. This is just a movie. It s possible that the reason why Joaquin Phoenix s Joker won t tie in to other DC Comics movies is that, as far as we currently know, the DCEU version of the Joker is still Jared Leto s take from Suicide Squad. After all, Margot Robbie s Harley Quinn is still very much in play, as she s reprising the role in Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2/7/2020) and, as noted above, presumably in James Gunn s The Suicide Squad.2. MARVEL S AGENT CARTER STAR JOINS MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE FRANCHISE (Photo by The Weinstein Company/courtesy Everett Collection)Although many other franchises have come and gone since the first Mission: Impossible in 1996, last year s Mission: Impossible Fallout was the sixth in the series, and Paramount Pictures has already scheduled Mission: Impossible 7 (7/23/2021) and Mission: Impossible 8 (8/5/2022). Part of how the M:I franchise has stayed relevant is through a steady flow of new cast members, including Michelle Monaghan and Simon Pegg in M:I III and Rebecca Ferguson and Alec Baldwin in M:I Rogue Nation. The first new cast member to be announced for Mission: Impossible 7 is British actress Hayley Atwell, who probably remains best known for playing Marvel s Peggy Carter, as seen in both Captain America: The First Avenger and in the much-missed ABC series, Agent Carter. Neither Atwell nor director Christopher McQuarrie revealed in their announcements the nature of her new character, though one could speculate (and this writer is) that she might be playing a British counterpart to those led by Tom Cruise s Ethan Hunt.3. HAILEE STEINFELD LIKELY TO JOIN THE MCU AS NEW HAWKEYE KATE BISHOP(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Although she was not primarily an archer when first introduced in 2005, the Marvel Comics character Kate Bishop would go on to become the second Hawkeye and the star of one of Marvel s most popular titles when Matt Fraction s Hawkeye series debuted in 2012. Before Avengers: Endgame was released this year, it seemed from the trailers that maybe Kate Bishop would be featured in that film (the young female archer in the trailers turned out to be Clint Barton s daughter instead). Instead, the character s introduction to the MCU was confirmed at SDCC to be in the upcoming Disney+ series Hawkeye. That show isn t scheduled to be released until the fall of 2021 (and indeed, the writer wasn t even hired until this week), but Disney and Marvel may already be in talks with their Kate Bishop actress. An offer has reportedly been made to 22-year-old Hailee Steinfeld, whose recent films have included Pitch Perfect 2, Pitch Perfect 3, Bumblebee, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, in which she voiced Spider-Gwen. In addition to the Disney+ series, it s also very possible that Steinfeld could reprise the role in future MCU movies.4. UNIVERSAL CLASSIC MONSTERS TO RETURN AS DARK ARMY (Photo by Universal Pictures)It was just two years ago that Universal Pictures brought together a cast of stars to promote their new Dark Universe cinematic universe. That, however, was before the first movie in that proposed franchise, The Mummy, was released to both critical and box office disappointment. Earlier this year, Variety ran a story that confirmed that the Dark Universe concept was dead, following the news last year that Bride of Frankenstein had been cancelled. (The Invisible Man, starring Elisabeth Moss, is still coming out next year, but not as part of a cinematic universe.) Instead, it appears the next time the various Universal Classic Monsters will co-star in the same movie together will be in something called Dark Army, which started as a pitch from comedic writer-director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat, Spy). It s not yet known if Feig s frequent collaborator Melissa McCarthy will appear in Dark Army, and if she does, what role she would play (Bride of Frankenstein, perhaps?). In addition to various (but not yet confirmed) Universal Classic Monsters, Dark Army will also feature some new monsters.5. CHIWETEL EJIOFOR TO FOLLOW SCAR IN THE LION KING WITH ANOTHER VILLAIN(Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/TM and Copyright ©Fox Searchlight Pictures)It sounds like reprising one of Disney s most iconic villains as Scar in this year s CGI remake of The Lion King may have been something Chiwetel Ejiofor enjoyed, because this week, the British actor signed on for another heel role. Ejiofor has joined Mark Wahlberg in the Paramount action thriller Infinite (which Icelandic actor Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson also joined this week). Mark Wahlberg will play a man haunted by memories of past lives who then discovers that he is part of a secret society of people who have been using their past memories to shape history for centuries. Infinite (8/7/2020) started as a project for Chris Evans, as one of his first post-Captain America roles, but he subsequently departed the project and was quickly replaced by Wahlberg.6. MARGOT ROBBIE REMAKING POST-APOCALYTPIC COMEDY TANK GIRL (Photo by Warner Bros.)As the old expression goes, what I really want to do is direct, but another smart play for today s movie stars is to become a producer. Margot Robbie started her LuckyChap Entertainment production company in 2014, and since then, she s produced I, Tonya, and is also producing the upcoming Barbie, Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), and Gotham City Sirens. This week, it was confirmed that Robbie is also producing and is likely to star in a reboot of the post-apocalyptic comedy Tank Girl. Lori Petty starred in the first Tank Girl movie (Rotten at 38%) in 1995, which was, like Robbie s movie will be, based on the British comic book series. Tank Girl depicts the adventures of an outlaw tank pilot with a mutated kangaroo boyfriend (played in the first movie by a heavily made-up Ice-T), supported by counterparts like Jet Girl and Sub Girl (you get one guess each as to how they each get around). This week, Robbie hired director Miles Joris-Peyrafitte (of her recent film Dreamland) to direct her version of Tank Girl.7. TOM HANKS STILL ATTACHED TO STAR IN 1960S ACTION FIGURE MOVIE MAJOR MATT MASON (Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/Walt Disney Studios)The 1960s action figure character Major Matt Mason remains fairly obscure for most people, but it has a very influential fan in the form of Tom Hanks. Although he is now 63 years old, Hanks has long been attached to star in a Major Matt Mason movie, and this week, it was confirmed that Hanks is still attached to star, despite his age. Introduced in 1966 at the height of the space race, Major Matt Mason is an American astronaut who lives on the Moon. Tom Hanks involvement actually started in 2012 (when he was a relatively spritely 56) as a film that would have been directed by Robert Zemeckis, but it is now being adapted by screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, who worked with Tom Hanks on The Da Vinci Code and its sequel Angels Demons. Of course, it s possible that Tom Hanks advanced age might be part of the story, perhaps in the form of a twist in which Matt Mason has been living on the Moon since the space race years.8. CHANNING TATUM PRODUCING MOVIE BASED ON CHINA S ZOMBIE BROTHER(Photo by Claudette Barius/©Warner Bros.)China is increasingly becoming a factor in the box office prospects of Hollywood films, but it s still relatively rare that those movies are actually based on Chinese properties. That, however, may be slowly changing, as suggested by one new project based on the Chinese webcomic and animated series Shi Xiong (Zombie Brother). It s not yet known if he will also star in Zombie Brother, but Channing Tatum is producing the live-action film version. The first step came this week with the hiring of director Todd Strauss-Schulson (Isn t It Romantic?). Although movies featuring magic or the supernatural frequently face censorship in China, Zombie Brother skirts that issue by explaining zombies through science.9. DEFINITIVE 1990S ACTION MOVIE FACE/OFF TO BE REMADE(Photo by Paramount Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Although it feels like the 1997 action thriller Face/Off is now primarily referenced in jest, the film starring Nicolas Cage and John Travolta actually maintains an impressive Certified Fresh Tomatometer score of 92%. That, however, doesn t necessarily help this week s news, as it s commonly held that the best candidates for remakes are movies that were flawed the first time around. That s right, Paramount Pictures is now developing a remake of Face/Off, about the highly unlikely scenario in which an FBI agent and a terrorist end up wearing each other s faces after a complicated surgery. Paramount Pictures has hired screenwriter Oren Uziel, who recently worked for Paramount on their movie version of Sonic the Hedgehog, which begs the question as to whether the remake will have to be delayed several months after audiences reject the CGI faces they see in the first trailer.Like this? Here are some notable entries for 2019, followed by the full festival list.Joker is probably the highest-profile selection, a standalone supervillain story starring Joaquin Phoenix as he tracks the origins of Batman s greatest foe. Knives Out is Rian Johnson s post-Last Jedi flick, a contempo murder mystery with a decked-out cast. The Lighthouse is the latest from The Witch s Robert Eggers, a black-and-white fantasy/horror film starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe and set in the 1890s. Marielle Heller follows the Best Actor and Actress-nominated Can You Ever Forgive Me? with promise of another major performance with Tom Hanks in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, all about the legendary Fred Rogers. Kasi Lemmons is putting out Harriet, starring Cynthia Erivo as Harriet Tubman, who led hundreds of American slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad. Hustlers was made by Lorene Scafaria, and that one depicts the true story of strippers who ripped off Wall Street brokers, echoing the female-driven heist flick Widows. Wrapping up 2020 will be Paul W.S. Anderson s adaptation of popular video game franchise Monster Hunter, which will see the director re-teaming with his wife Milla Jovovich. Jovovich will co-star with martial arts icon Tony Jaa, as well as Meagan Good, Ron Perlman, and T.I., among others, and center on a group of soldiers who are transported to a world ruled by giant, deadly monsters.
In the third and final season of Marvel s Jessica Jones, the series titular character faces one of the most difficult challenges of her life: trying to be an honest-to-goodness hero. Sure, the cynical, superpowered private detective saw a form of that heroism when she teamed up with the other Manhattan Defenders to stop a bunch of ninjas, but it all looked like silly costumes and catchphrases to her. Now, however, Jessica (Krysten Ritter) is trying to make good on her mother’s final wish for her.But since this is Jessica Jones, it will not be an easy path for our heroine to walk. When Rotten Tomatoes caught up with Ritter and executive producer Melissa Rosenberg recently, in fact, the character’s difficult relationship with heroism was definitely on their minds.“I think that Jessica will continue to grapple with that,” Ritter said. “What I love about where we see her this season is seeing her apply herself, see her try, see her put one foot in front of the other in any way.”It is an effort viewers will find new and surprising for a character whose default energy expenditure is drinking whiskey. And while she still enjoys her liquor, she is trying to mitigate that by helping those in need. Not that those in need are always easy to find, of course.“Heroism is supposedly black and white, and Jessica operates in a world of grays, and sees many different facets,” Rosenberg said. “For her, it s always going to be more complicated than it might be for a traditional hero.”In fact, the season opens with Jessica handling once such case. And though Jessica tries to find her own way to be heroic, the season will also feature Trish Walker’s (Rachael Taylor) attempts to become a more traditional hero. The fans love it,” said Ritter of the scene, which appears in the Trish-focused episode she directed. “Getting to direct that was exciting because it s a bit of a turn for our show. [It is] a slight departure from where we normally spend all the time with Jessica. [We get] to dig deeper and really get inside her head, how gung-ho she is, and how laser-focused she is, and how badly she wants it.”And while the story gets into some of Trish’s addictive tendencies and how she uses heroin as a new stimulant, Ritter said light moments like her attempts to find a costume are sprinkled throughout.“We really got to do something new,” Rosenberg added. “It didn t have to fall into the same visual language, even, that our traditional episodes do. It was really, quite an exploration for us, really fun to write.”The episode also features the first attempts to humanize Trish’s mother Dorothy (Rebecca De Mornay). Ritter noted it is “surprising given that she s a child abuser,” but also a facet of Jessica Jones as a whole to give monsters human faces.“Even in season 1, having an episode where you get to know Kilgrave, and you re like, ‘I feel bad for him all of a sudden, but wait, I shouldn t because he s this monster.’ That s a cool thing about the storytelling that we do on our show and Marvel in general,” Ritter said.But will that tendency for the show to humanize people who have wronged Jessica or Trish allow them to reconcile after the latter killed Jessica’s mother at the end of season 2?“One of the things I love most about the way we tell stories is the relationship between those two women and it s really a very honest look at a female relationship. There are ups and downs and very complicated things, moments that you re pulled apart and, I think, there s a lot to overcome this season between Jessica and Trish,” Ritter said.Granted, killing your best friend’s mother ranks pretty high on the things that could test a life-long bond: “It s a hell of a journey for them,” she added.(Photo by Netflix)Nonetheless, Ritter suggested there is a possible “level of redemption for every character” extending from Jessica to Trish to Dorothy and even to Jeri Hogarth (Carrie-Anne Moss), who opens the season asking Jessica to do something she absolutely cannot agree to do. It sets off a series of events that takes Jeri closer to the heart of darkness than ever before — and that’s considering the shady deals she made in the first two seasons! Even more remarkable: she does it for love. Or, at least, Jeri’s concept of love.As Moss put it, “Here she is: successful and everything in this beautiful apartment and at the top of her game. She won all that, got [one over on] her old partners in season 2, and she s completely alone in the most vulnerable state and has no one. That s pretty horrible. But soon, she arranges to meet an old flame from college and sets her sights on becoming the most important person in her world.“Jeri wants to be with someone who reminds her of the goodness in the world,” Moss said of the character’s motivation to rekindle this romance. “But even then, Jeri just can t help herself but to manipulate and mess that one up in such an extreme way.”Teasing the outcome, Moss added, “I think [she] goes way past the line.”Also conflicted is Eka Darville s Malcolm Ducasse, who has gone from Jessica s junkie neighbor to one of Jeri s top fixers. As viewers reconnect with Malcolm, they will see someone more conflicted with his choice to join Jeri s firm than ever before.“His whole journey is around respect and finding respect for himself and then respect externally,” Darville explained. “He s seen that modeled by Jeri, who is incredibly successful and incredibly powerful and has a lot of the things that he aspires to have in the world, but is doing it in a way that goes against every one of his ethics and morals.”(Photo by David Giesbrecht/Netflix)Despite the seeming certainty Malcolm had at the end of last season, Darville said the character is still figuring out “exactly who he is in that and how far he s willing to go.” That said, his story opens this season with a fairly surprising choice: fixing a situation for a client he absolutely would not have just a year earlier. Darville imagines Malcolm found himself getting used to choices like the one he makes in “small steps” while working for Jeri. He also added that the seeming ruthlessness displayed by Malcolm in season 3 may not “necessarily be such a bad thing.”Despite their characters getting closer to an essential darkness, both Moss and Darville felt their characters find fitting ends that will satisfy fans.“I think it s a great end. I m really proud of it,” Ritter said. “We worked really hard to craft an ending that was really satisfying, I think, for our audience who have watched her and rooted for her. [And] for me, playing her for almost five years. We really spent a lot of time crafting that final chapter for her.”Of course, the end of the series is still bittersweet for all involved. Ritter and Moss both mentioned they would miss the camaraderie with the cast and crew, while Darville said he will miss working in New York. But Rosenberg, who was planning to leave the series prior to its cancellation, mentioned she will miss something more central: writing for Jessica. But comic book heroes never stay down forever, so perhaps someday, circumstances will allow Jessica Jones to return.Marvel s Jessica Jones season 3 is now available on Netflix.

As simple a statement as those two words are, they form the credo of Gregory House, the curmudgeonly antihero doctor who made Hugh Laurie a household name and central figure in House, Fox s highly successful medical procedural that ran from 2004 to 2012.House was not a likable guy. And yet, as much as the genius physician went out of his way to break rules, insult colleagues, put patients in danger, and feed into his own deeply troubled psyche — while masking his personal problems with a candy-popping Vicodin habit — there was an addictive quality in watching the man work. It s been 15 years since the show s premiere changed the face of medical dramas. Sure, the genre has continued to thrive on the small screen, but Gregory House MD was truly TV s last great doctor.His disruptive, manipulative nature intrigued us. He lured us in by flouting convention and putting his position and that of his colleagues in jeopardy, until finally that moment of epiphany promised by every episode locked us in and made us embrace this misunderstood medical madman.It s common knowledge that Dr. House was inspired, in part, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle s Sherlock Holmes. Aside from the similarities in their last names and addresses — House lived at 221B which was a direct shout-out to Holmes residence on Baker Street — both men carried with them a distaste for the general public. Instead, they were driven by investigative motivations. Holmes was a detective out to solve the most dastardly bizarre crimes; House was a doctor by label, but at the character s core, he was a medical detective. Not only does the dynamic between the chaotic internal workings of the famous detective provide engaging entertainment when met with his external brilliance, Sherlock is an iconic figure who continues to be explored in a variety of television programs to this day — from BBC s cutting-edge Sherlock to CBS s detective procedural Elementary.But what if Sherlock Holmes worked in the medical field, a realm where a calming bedside manner and unrequited trust dictate an unspoken, yet expected, relationship between the doctor and the patient? House explored the answer to that question for eight seasons, and the deeper we dug into Gregory s complex character story, the more audiences stayed on the hook.As much as we loved to watch Dr. House exercise his biting wit and insulting personality to each and every person whose path he crossed, however, a glimpse of the misunderstood hero would randomly shine through his harsh exterior. His patients knew they were in good hands. From neurologist Dr. Eric Foreman (Omar Epps) and intensive care physician Dr. Robert Chase (Jesse Spencer) to immunologist Dr. Allison Cameron (Jennifer Morrison) and Olivia Wilde s rebellious Thirteen, House regularly turned to others for assistance in solving the mysterious problem of the week. And that just adds to the character s allure. Because as much as his genius would regularly astound his colleagues and viewers alike, there was a very real theme of fail until you succeed that they faced on a daily basis.Dr. House was an antihero, but at the end of the day, he was still a hero. His goal was to fix the disease, not the patient. But when you add in the regular bits of failure that would enter into his professional and personal life — the ongoing will they/won t they between him and Dr. Lisa Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein), for example — added a welcome layer of humanity to him. The average viewer may dream of being on the same intellectual playing field as the man, but seeing the faults in the star doctor suddenly gave us all someone we could relate to, as well.Dr. Gregory House didn t always get it right. The show had its fair share of episodes where, by the end, a patient s life was lost. Take The Good Doctor, for instance: ABC s heartwarming medical drama was created by House s David Shore. The new drama, which stars Freddie Highmore as a doctor with autism, has achieved a fair share of success and was even called the inverted version of House by The AV Club s Alex McLevy.The era of the TV antihero has all but come and gone. The narrative pendulum has swung back into a territory ripe with feel-good stories. And as popular as the medical procedural genre continues to be, with the long-running soap opera drama of Grey s Anatomy, for one, providing small-screen comfort food to the masses, there s a wonder if another Dr. House will ever grace our screens again.Whatever misunderstood genius medical practitioner grabs our attention next will have some big shoes to fill, however. House the most popular TV doctor in the world, and Hugh Laurie was named the most-watched man on television by the Guinness Book of World Records.
