early part of the century with The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones opened an opportunity for fantasy to migrate from the page to the screen. And as the genre s prestige rose thanks to GoT, Pullman came to view television as a better place for his material to reach an audience. In 2015, BBC One commissioned an eight-episode adaptation of the trilogy. Expected to arrive in 2017, little else happened besides writer Jack Thorne (National Treasure) telling the press that the program was still on its way.It suddenly burst to life the following year with Logan’s Dafne Keen signing on to play Lyra, The Danish Girl s Tom Hooper agreeing to direct the first two episodes, and Lin-Manuel Miranda taking on a role later revealed to be aeronaut Lee Scoresby. Soon after, James McAvoy, Clarke Peters, and Ruth Wilson joined the ensemble. After these announcements, HBO signed on as a co-producer and BBC One ordered a second season before the first had even been filmed.According to producer Jane Tranter — who is responsible for bringing Doctor Who back to TV and is now founder of Bad Wolf Production company — that decision was made to prevent Keen and the other child actors from aging out of the characters too quickly. There is a great thing in His Dark Materials of a girl going through puberty and we wanted to be able to pace that story out age-appropriately, she explained to reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in August.  And so, that’s why everyone — HBO and the BBC — went with us for 16 episodes. Wilson plays Mrs. Coulter while McAvoy plays Lord Asriel, two characters whose shared history will no doubt surprise viewers. Peters plays the Master of Jordan College, who also serves as Lyra’s guardian as the story begins. Other cast members include Ruta Gedmintas as Serafina Pekkala, the witch played by Eva Green in the film; Anne-Marie Duff as Ma Costa; Ariyon Bakare as Carlo Boreal; Will Keen as Father MacPhail; Georgina Campbell as Adele Starminster; Lucian Msamati as John Faa; Lewin Lloyd as Lyra’s best friend, Roger Parslow; Tyler Howitt as Billy Costa; Amir Wilson as key character Will Parry; and Andrew Scott as his father, Col. John Parry.  Lending their voices to the various dæmons are Kit Connor as Pantalaimon; Helen McCrory as Stelmaria; David Suchet as Kaisa; Cristela Alonzo as Hester; and the show s lead puppeteer, Brian Fisher, providing sounds for Mrs. Coutler s otherwise mute — and unnamed — golden monkey dæmon. Joe Tandberg will voice Iorek Byrnison, the polar bear Lyra meets in the North.READ ALSO: Upcoming TV Fantasy Series That Could Be the Next Game of Thrones(Photo by HBO)HBO s plot description closely resembles that of the early Northern Lights chapters. Lyra’s search for a missing friend leads her to learn about Dust and the alternate worlds. It also goes out of its way to mention Will Parry, who will seemingly debut earlier than he does in the novel series. Based on the most recent trailer, Lyra s journey will closely mirror the one described in The Golden Compass. But with its emphasis on Asriel s conflict with the Magisterium, the preview also suggests viewers will become privy to certain motivations and issues far earlier than readers, who spend the entire first novel alongside Lyra and learning about the world(s) with her.Curiously, the controversies that dogged the film production have not returned with the series — or, at least, they have not resurfaced yet. Considering Pullman’s views on the church, it is only a matter of time before old quotes end up back in print and old opponents try to take the television series to task. If that proves to be the case, Tranter has a ready reply: [The series] is not an attack on religion. It is an attack on a particular form of organization. Which could always be true, but it is also easy to imagine HBO wants to court the controversies, which may lure viewers to watch this lavishly-produced rendition of the story. The new trailer even seems to poke at the beehive with its mentions of the Magisterium as a regressive organization. The Release DateThe long-awaited series will debut Monday, Nov. 4 at 9 p.m. on HBO.

Ryan Fujitani for Rotten Tomatoes: You ve written, what, literally hundreds of novels across various series R.L. Stine: I know. Now, let s not say the number or I ll have to go take a nap or something. It s 26 years of Goosebumps. Do you believe it? I think they are about 140 titles now. I don t know. How did it happen? The Fear Street series; there are about 80 in the Fear Street series for teenagers.RT: So you ve not only done that, but you ve done short stories, anthologies, even comics. Did you have any inkling that the Goosebumps series in particular would attract the kind of fan following that it did?Stine: No, we had no idea. And we thought we were doing something kind of dangerous. No one had ever done a scary book series for seven-to-12 year olds. It had never been done, and I was really reluctant. For one thing, Fear Street was doing really well, the teen series, and I didn t want to mess that up. I was very reluctant to do Goosebumps. And then finally I said, All right, okay, we ll try two or three. The kind of businessman I am, right? We ll try two or three. And they just sat on the shelves. It took about six months for kids to discover them. I think if it were today with computers and everything, the stores would ve pulled them off the shelf, and that would ve been it.About six months. Somehow, kids discovered them, and then started telling other kids the secret kids network and it just went crazy. There was no advertising, no hype. Nobody knew me. It was just one of those insane things that no one had planned on. Nobody.RT: Considering you were so skeptical about it working, what was it that finally made you take the plunge?Stine: Well, they kept after me, my editors, and then finally I said, All right. If I can think of a good name for the series, let s try a few. And then I tried to figure out how I could do it and not really terrify seven-to-12 year olds, and I decided I d have a blend of horror and humor.RT: It took quite a while for the Goosebumps movie to come to fruition.Stine: 23 years, it took.RT: Was it satisfying to finally see your creations on the big screen in blockbuster scale that way?Stine: Yeah, it was, and it was a wonderful surprise because I had very little input in the movie. No one wants the author around. No one wants the author around, and I just felt so lucky that the film was so good. It really was a good movie, and I was just very happy about that. And also so weird to be a character. It was all about me. How weird is that, right? So I really enjoyed it. Yeah, I had a really good time with it, and it s totally revitalized the Goosebumps book series. We re back. It s been incredible. I just signed on to do six more. Some of us don t know when to quit, right? We just keep going.Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween is available to stream and on DVD/Blu-ray now.

(Photo by ©DreamWorks/courtesy Everett Collection)150 Great Feel-Good Movies to Stream NowWhat defines a feel-good movie? It s hard to say. For some, a thrilling fight sequence or a series of Michael Bay-style explosions brings joy; for others, a jump scare does it. For others still, a satisfying mystery; for others romance is key. When putting together the below epic list of feel-good movies – a list we think will do movie lovers some good right now – we didn t overthink it. As a staff, we at Rotten Tomatoes asked ourselves a basic question: What are the movies that, without fail, leave us feeling better than we did before we pushed play.A sort of criteria emerged from our responses. Below you ll find movies that lean heavily into nostalgia – titles that evoke that comfy feeling of going to the cinema as a youngster to see films you ll later watch dozens of times on cable (Hook, The Sandlot, Mrs. Doubtfire). You ll also notice a preponderance of hilarious, and often goofy, comedies (Step Brothers, Friday, Spy), and a bit of romance, too (Crazy Rich Asians, When Harry Met Sally). You ll find big names whose decades spent atop marquees have been a kind of comfort over the years to moviegoers (Toms Hanks and Cruise, Whoopi Goldberg, Eddie Murphy). And you ll find the work of newer filmmaking voices that make us thrilled for the future of the medium (Taika Waititi, Olivia Wilde, and the team behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse).The 150 titles featured in our guide to Great Feel-Good Movies are filled with laughs and heart, and characters you root for and relate to. In times like these, we think they ll make good company. What s your favorite feel-good movie? Critics are certainly showing their appreciation for action flick Nobody, lifting the movie to a Certified Fresh Tomatometer score of 80%. That’s an improvement over Ilya Naishuller’s debut film, Hardcore Henry (52%) from 2015. Nobody also bested that film’s opening (.1 million in 3,015 theaters) with an estimated .7 million in 2,460 theaters with limited capacity. (Tom Jerry opened in 2,475 theaters.) That’s the third-best opening of the year to date behind only the family entries of T J and Raya and the Last Dragon. Is this the first good sign that adults (hopefully of the vaccinated variety) are headed back into theaters? The Little Things opened to .7 million on the last weekend in January , while also available on HBO Max. Last summer’s attempt to reopen with Russell Crowe in Unhinged netted a million wide release (1,823 theaters); the movie then slowly made its way to million. It’s going to be interesting to chart the progression of Nobody as new wide releases enter the marketplace almost every week going forward. The Top Ten And Beyond: Raya Holds On As The Courier Expands(Photo by ©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)After three weeks at number 1, Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon dropped to second place, falling 32% to .5 million for a total of .4 million to date. The year’s top grosser fell to third place, as Tom Jerry took in another .5 million for a total of .1 million. That makes it the 11th-highest-grossing film since the beginning of 2020 and the fourth-highest since the pandemic behind only Tenet, The Croods: A New Age, and Wonder Woman 1984; the latter two are still in the top 10 with The Croods sequel still creeping up on Tenet’s total. After four weeks, the long-delayed Chaos Walking has crept over the million mark after opening to .77 million. That’s a feat unattained by fellow wide March releases that opened between .5-4 million: Slither, Missing In Action II: The Beginning, Boat Trip, Unsane, 3 Strikes, Amos Andrew, and Pride. The Benedict Cumberbatch spy thriller, The Courier, added 208 theaters and fell 48% but still grossed another .04 million for a total of .48 million. That makes it the 32nd highest-grossing release in Roadside Attractions’ history, which – all things considered – is not too shabby. Especially when it will take less than just another million for it to join the company’s top 25.These Dates In Box Office History: Milestones for Logan, Rango, Horton Hears A Who!

Ghcxuf Stewart is also playing a big role as a producer in shaping this bold new adventure into unexplored Trek future. Patrick didn t want to put handcuffs on us in a way by saying I don t wanna do this, and I don t wanna do that,' Kurtzman said. He said, I want you to have the freedom to explore this character from a new perspective, and I will always know in my gut if it feels like something he would or wouldn t do. And that s a conversation that we have as we re building it scene-to-scene. We ve started to internalize his thinking about Picard. And because that conversation is literally daily, either on email or in the room in person, I think we feel confident that we re making choices that he would be happy with. And is happy with, because ultimately he s a producer on the show too and he gets as much of a say. The first thing that we all said is it has to feel grounded, he continued. No matter what choices we re making about portraying the future, it has to feel grounded. Because I think one of the things people have loved so much about Next Gen is that it is a very emotional, thoughtful, grounded piece of entertainment. The easy thing to do is come up with, you know, crazy floating skyscrapers and all the cliches of science-fiction, and we ve tried to avoid that across the board. So, in the production design, in the look of it and in the feel of it, it s always about the small, intimate, personal details that you can still connect to now even though it s taking place so far in the future. Development is well underway with shooting, starting in April, occurring in America, Kurtzman said. Given his eight-month estimate for effects on an episode, the earliest the series might hit would be in early to mid-2020.But Kurtzman wasn t willing to give up all his secrets; he confirmed that the destruction of Romulus plays into the new Picard storyline, but when asked how, he replied, No way. Click here to read what Kurtzman had to say about other titles in Star Trek s expanding universe: Star Trek: Discovery spin-off about Section 31 starring Michelle Yeoh and animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks.Reporting by Sophie-Marie Prime 😈😈

龙珠超宇宙pc Pet Sematary (2019) 57% The original 1989 Pet Sematary certainly has its share of fans, which is understandable, given its intriguing premise and a couple of indelible key moments that have seared themselves into cinematic history. Unfortunately, critics were fairly divided on the film, and its Tomatometer score pales in comparison to some of its more fondly remembered contemporaries. In other words, it was a prime candidate for the remake treatment, and to its credit, the version we got in 2019 does try to ratchet up the tension and offer a slightly different take on the story. Of course, there is a subtext to the film – a running theme about the nature of grief and loss – that it doesn t seem particularly interested in dissecting, and that s admittedly unfortunate. But we do get some strong performances, particularly from Jason Clarke and, pulling double duty as both the living and reanimated versions of daughter Ellie, Jeté Laurence, who is equally as frightening as she is endearing. Plus, the duo behind the camera, Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kölsch, infuse the film with dread at every turn. It s possibly a slower burn than many wanted or expected, it may rely a bit too much on conventional horror techniques, and it might have been interesting to see how everything would have turned out if they felt free to diverge a bit more from the previous version, but it s still a decent late-night weekend watch for anyone hankering for some thrills.

Television Christmas specials had an amazing run in the 1960s, with legendary shows like A Charlie Brown Christmas, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas! all coming out within a few years of each other. And the small screen has been chasing the dragon ever since, with repeated attempts to strike that holiday gold by creating a beloved property that will air year after year after year. Some of the specials listed here were valiant efforts, while others are noble failures, and except for some hardcore fans in various corners of the internet, they’ve been mostly left behind in the snows of TV history. Let’s give a little love to these misfit toys:Christmas Is (1970)The Lutheran Church’s ventures into TV animation went beyond their legendary Davey Goliath series – this special follows the adventures of young Benji and his sheepdog Waldo. Benji gets annoyed about being cast as one of the shepherds in the annual Nativity play, but he has an attitude adjustment after finding himself transported back to Bethlehem and watching the story play out before his eyes. (The follow-up special Easter Is scared the bejesus our of some kids who happened to see it, because of the scary sequence in which Waldo gets lost.)The Night the Animals Talked (1970)This vintage special hasn’t aired on network television in decades, although it did spark some reminiscences in 2017, when the theatrical animated feature The Star pursued a somewhat similar storyline. This half-hour cartoon portrays the legend that the animals in the stable – you know, the one where Mary and Joseph wound up gained the ability to talk to each other on the night of Jesus’ birth. The voice cast includes legendary character actor Paul Dooley (Sixteen Candles), although if you squint at it just right, this show occasionally resembles Animal Farm more than it does the Gospels.Casper s First Christmas (1979)While many of the Harvey Comics characters made the leap to film and TV animation, they rarely crossed over outside of the fold. So, if only for the fact that this special features Casper learning about the holiday from the likes of Yogi Bear and Snagglepuss, it’s got historical significance. Still, the idea of it being Casper’s first Christmas calls to mind the eternal question about the character: Was he born a ghost? Or is he the spirit of a dead child?A Family Circus Christmas (1979)A Charlie Brown Christmas became a holiday perennial because of its own greatness, yes, but it helped that it was based on a beloved comic strip that reigned supreme in American newspapers for 50 years. There isn t quite the same level of affection for Bil Keane’s The Family Circus, which in recent years has become more popular as fodder for online memes than for its hilarious jokes about Billy’s dotted line or the mischievous imps Not Me and Ida Know. Anyway, if you’re a fan, here’s Dolly and Jeffy and all the rest learning the true meaning of Christmas or whatever.Christmas Comes to PacLand (1982)What’s worse than a weekly cartoon that’s a shameless attempt to build characters out of two-dimensional video game figures? A holiday special where those two-dimensional figures help Santa Claus fix his sleigh so they can save Christmas. For all the clunky jokes and terrible animation, however, you have to commend this special for committing to the bit; we may not have ever needed a Pac-Man Christmas special, but this Pac-Man Christmas special always goes out of its way to be the most Pac-Man Christmas special it can be.Ziggy s Gift (1982)Yet another TV adaptation of a newspaper comics character, and even though one of Elliott Kalan’s running gags on the Flop House podcast is his series of pitches for a Ziggy movie, this TV special featuring the hairless, luckless Everyman actually has a devoted cult following. (It no doubt helps that it was directed by the great Richard Williams, the animator behind Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and The Thief and the Cobbler.) Ziggy gets a job as a street-corner Santa, and of course, his kindness makes holiday magic happen.Rapsittie Street Kids: Believe in Santa (2002)This 2002 special from the WB Network might well have remained completely forgotten by the public at large, had Rotten Tomatoes’ own Nathan Rabin not disinterred it for his Happy Place blog. Hideously animated, grossly padded to fill out an hour’s worth of TV time, and generally devoid of any holiday joy or magic, this is one Christmas special you have to see to believe. And even though it’s never been released on DVD (imagine that), the whole thing lives on YouTube. P.S. The voice cast includes Mark Hamill, who can now claim that he was in a holiday special even worse than the Star Wars one. (Photo by Netflix)After waiting almost two years for Mindhunter to return, Netflix dropped nine new episodes of the crime series on August 16, bringing viewers back into the bleak world of the FBI s Behavioral Science Unit. Series executive producer David Fincher directed three episodes of the new season that sees special agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) along with civilian consultant Dr. Wendy Carr (Anna Torv) continue their mission studying serial killers around the country with the goal of creating official protocols in identifying and profiling repeat murderers.Season 2 picks up where season 1 left off, with the gang continuing their killer research — and attempting to keep their personal lives from falling apart in the process. While it s clear they are better at one of those two things, it looks like the group gains some headway with the Bureau as their department profile rises within the FBI.Their main case revolves around the true-life Atlanta Child Murders, involving a serial killer who mainly targeted young black children in the 70s and 80s. As the team investigates an array of gruesome crimes, they visit new serial killers in hopes of gaining new insights into the minds of murderers. While the series is inspired by true events, season 2 introduces real-life figures including Charles Manson, the Son of Sam, the BTK Killer, Wayne Williams, and more.Find out the true story about each of those men in this rundown of the truth behind every killer portrayed in Mindhunter season 2.

龙珠超宇宙pc Gena Rowlands and John Cassavetes. [I chose this one] because of Gena, because I watched it when my mind was first opened up to what cinema could be when I was a young actress starting out and discovering the scope of film. Everything that Gena does in this, as well as in A Woman under the Influence, the way that it explores femininity and masculinity and the devastating edges of masculinity, as well as so many colors that a woman can be – her fierceness, her devastation, her heartbreak, her going mad. And then to understand a film could be shot in someone s house, that you could just do this – you could find a way to carve your own path away from prescribed studio roles. So, I chose this for the whole package. And I had the honor of working with Nick [Cassavetes, son of John and Gena] and Gena in a film that Nick directed and I saw that it was a completely different way of working than I had ever been exposed to. The collaboration between all the departments and how we were all… you hear it a lot, “we re like a family,” but in that case, it really was. Everyone was together. The relationship, for example, between me and the set designer was extremely close because Nick wanted it that way. He said, “Well, this is your character. Where would you live? Let s all do this all together.” So that makes for a more relaxed performance and it s just more fun.Opening Night is also important to me because it s about the theater. Those scenes where she s backstage and about to go on, or the scenes in the rehearsal room, but particularly when she s about to go on stage, that visceral thrill and terror, the way he catches it… theater is my heart so it combines a lot of my loves in that film.
