全国真人网采用百度引擎0（Baidu 2）o the MCU. And as Feige put it at the 2019 D23 Expo, “You will meet her in her Disney+ series and see her in our films,” a commitment to what Ms. Marvel fans have wanted for ages. At the same time Bisha K. Ali was revealed as the series showrunner. In September of 2020, Bad Boys for Life filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, documentary short Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Meera Menon emerged as the list of directors for the program. Shortly there after, Iman Vellani won the starring role of Kamala Khan. In February of 2021, Laurel Marsden reportedly joined the cast, which includes Vellani, Rish Shah, Mohan Kapur, Zenobia Shroff, Yasmeen Fletcher, Saagar Shaikh, and Matt Lintz. Production wrapped in early May. Despite Feige claiming the series would stream in late 2021, it is unclear if the program will debut immediately after Hawkeye in late December or start just after the New Year. How It Fits in the MCU: The series will reportedly feature some Inhumans besides Kamala, suggesting Marvel Studios will attempt to revive the concept after Marvel Television’s Inhumans seemingly poisoned the well. Also, Feige’s promise that Kamala will appear in films following her debut leaves us wondering if there will be some sort of Young Avengers type film by 2025. In the meantime, Vellani will appear in The Marvels alongside WandaVision’s Teyonah Parris.Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, © Marvel Studios)Release Date: March 25, 2022What We Know: Director Scott Derrickson finally signed on to return in December of 2018, but his involvement with the film ended in early January of 2019 when he departed the production, citing “creative differences.” His replacement is Spider-Man and The Evil Dead’s Sam Raimi, making a return of sorts to the Marvel universe. Benedict Cumberbatch returns as the Sorcerer Supreme with Elizabeth Olsen joining him as the Scarlet Witch in what Derrickson originally called the first scary MCU movie though some believe Marvel’s unease with that mission statement led to his departure. Raimi’s bonafides as a horror director suggest the film may still have some scares, but the script is being reworked by Loki head writer Michael Waldron and may yet conform to the Marvel house style. As teased at the end of the first film, Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) will return, as will Rachel McAdams and Benedict Wong. The film, which is still a ways from beginning production, is now set for release in March 2022 following multiple changes to Marvel Studios schedule. At the December 2020 Disney Investor Day presentation, Feige confirmed Xochitl Gomez will play Young Avengers favorite America Chavez. Production wrapped in mid-April. In May, writer Michael Waldron told Vanity Fair he wrote the script “from scratch” following Derrickson’s departure. In June, he added that film will lean into a “scarier direction,” even though he also mentioned it is not a horror film. How It Fits in the MCU: The addition of America Chavez all but confirms reality-hopping will matter greatly in the coming years – that ability is a key part of her skill set. The events of Loki and WandaVision (to say nothing of what’s teased in the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer) also suggest Strange will discover the real enemy lurking in the Multiverse as he deals with both Wanda’s actions and his own. Those who saw the fourth episode of What If…? may even wonder if that enemy is Doctor Strange.Thor: Love And Thunder(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, © Marvel Studios)Release Date: May 6, 2022What We Know: Shortly before Comic-Con 2019, Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi signed on to return for a fourth installment in the God of Thunder franchise. Chris Hemsworth will return as the wandering Odinson but not necessarily as Thor. In a surprise move, Marvel revealed Natalie Portman is returning to the series as the new Mighty Thor, a twist pulled from an excellent Thor comic book series by Jason Aaron, Russell Dauterman, and others. Meanwhile, Tessa Thompson will return as Valkyrie, the king of New Asgard who must find a Queen, and we assume Loki (Tom Hiddleston) – in either of his manifestations – will return to mercilessly tease his now nameless brother. As 2020 began, Christian Bale emerged as a potential new member of the cast – Marvel subsequently confirmed he will play the main antagonist, Gorr the God Butcher. In February that year, Someone Great filmmaker Jennifer Kaytin Robinson reportedly joined Waititi as a co-writer. That March, Vin Diesel revealed the Guardians of the Galaxy will make some sort of appearance – which we’ve always assumed would be the case – but the addition of Chris Pratt to the cast, announced in November of 2020, confirmed the Guardians will be along for the ride. Production began in early 2021 with all manner of Guardians characters reportedly spotted on set and Jaimie Alexander said to be returning as Lady Sif, who must have been away from Asgard during the events of Ragnarok. In April of 2021, Russell Crowe seemingly confirmed he is playing Olympian god Zeus during a radio call-in show. In June of 2021, Chris Hemsworth took to Instagram to share a photo of himself and Taika Waititi, in costume and on set, to announce that filming had officially wrapped on Love and Thunder. How It Fits in the MCU: Now that we know where Loki is in his own series, it remains to be seen if he’ll even be able to take part in the film. Nevertheless, it is possible the Multiverse will make its presence known even if the former God of Mischief is missing for the first time in the Thor film series. Also, as the film will predate Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, you can expect Rocket (Bradley Cooper) to offer a tearful goodbye as Odinson leaves the group to deal with his loss of name and status.PHASE 5 AND BEYONDDuring the 2019 Comic-Con presentation, Kevin Feige made a few strategic teases about Phase 5, which was set to begin after the release of Love and Thunder. MCU Phases are not set in stone, though – and can even be changed after the fact – so a 2021 teaser of upcoming Marvel Studios films appeared to move the change of phase to 2023. For the moment, though, we’re going to keep the following projects as Phase 5 until Feige appears on stage with an updated calendar. Also, not everything is officially on the release schedule, but we have our guesses as to when some of the features will be released – check them out below.She-Hulk (series)(Photo by © Marvel Studios, © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Premiere Date: 2022What We Think Might Happen: According to Feige, “Bruce Banner is no longer the only Hulk in the MCU.” Based on fan favorite She-Hulk, the Disney+ series will focus on Bruce’s cousin Jennifer Walters. As the Marvel chief put it, “She’s a Hulk and she’s a lawyer.” Fans of a 2014 run by Charles Soule and Javier Pulido hope some of its irreverent tone and legal action will filter its way into the series. Though She-Hulk was the last series announced at the 2019 D23 Expo, it also became one of the quickest to come together with head writer Jessica Gao – a Rick Morty veteran whose appointment suggests the series will be more comedic – director Cat Coiro, and star Tatiana Maslany, who joined the series in September of 2020, signing on. At the December 2020 Disney Investor Day Presentation, Feige confirmed Maslany as the star, and announced Mark Ruffalo and Tim Roth will appear as The Hulk and The Abomination, respectively. Also, when referencing Jen’s day job, Feige said, “you never know what Marvel characters are going to up” in the courtroom, leaving many to speculate what it means for Marvel’s other well-known superhero lawyer. A.P. Bio veteran Anu Valia will also direct episodes. In January of 2021, Ginger Gonzaga reportedly joined the cast as Jennifer’s unnamed best friend. Considering that role is typically filled by Marvel Comics character Patsy Walker – a.k.a. Hellcat – it is possible She-Hulk will offer the first concrete change from the old Marvel Television programs. On Jessica Jones, Patsy was better known as Trish and played by Rachael Taylor. In April, Renée Elise Goldsberry joined the program as a character reportedly called “Amelia. “In June, Jameela Jamil reportedly joined the series as Titania, a super-strong woman who has tussled with Jennifer in the comics from time to time. How It Fits in the MCU: Besides Jennifer’s familial relationship to Bruce, she’s been known to take on well-known Marvel characters as clients and even tussle with Daredevil in court. In fact, depending on the timing of the She-Hulk TV series, Matt Murdoch could make his return to the MCU within the series. Also, we imagine the series will address why Bruce isn’t hulked out in the Shang-Chi mid-credit stinger.Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Whether it s the hit Fallout video game franchise or horror films like The Return of the Living Dead and Robert Rodriguez s Grindhouse installment, Planet Terror, the trope of a chemical disaster and the monsters it births into the world is a subgenre that has kept audiences entertained for decades. Those examples are far enough removed from the real world, giving viewers an escapist perspective filled with zombified humans and mutated beasts to battle. It s an easier pill to swallow when such a catastrophic event is flooded with a plethora of supernatural goodies. Then there s HBO s Chernobyl.Creator Craig Mazin s (The Hangover Part II, Identity Thief) bleak five-part mini-series does away with the expected horror tropes audiences have become familiar with and, instead, delivers an up-close, completely terrifying, and grotesquely personal look at Ukraine s infamous 1986 power plant explosion — including the government cover-up and devastating calamity that followed. Here, no undead hordes or mutant hounds can be found shambling about the vacated Soviet roads. Instead, the big bad of the historical drama is largely unseen. It s everywhere and nowhere at the same time, only making itself known to unsuspecting passersby once it s too late. The agonizing visuals of skin melting off living innocent bodies is just the tip of the aesthetic iceberg here, and really nails home the extent of the damage caused. The tons of toxic poison seen billowing out of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant s exposed roof is the ominous villain here. The unseen monster, followed by the even more damaging accomplice of the lies the government tells to save face, come together in a way so catastrophic, so heartwrenching, and so unbelievable that we can t help but label Chernobyl as the scariest thing we ve seen on TV in years — and maybe even ever.It s unsurprising then, that critical praise collected along the way had given the series Certified Fresh status with an impressive 96% on the Tomatometer with 47 reviews.SPOILER ALERT: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS DETAILS ABOUT THE FIRST THREE EPISODES OF CHERNOBYL. STOP HERE IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED.(Photo by HBO)In the closing moments of episode 2, titled Please Remain Calm, three brave men, fully outfitted in protective suits and gas masks, wade through the flooded tunnels beneath the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. With the reactor core exploded and exposed, pouring tons upon tons of nuclear materials into the air, these men — dubbed by history as The Suicide Squad — ventured into the bowels of the building to open the pipes in order to drain the water (which, upon hitting the open core, would allegedly create lava that would drain into Europe s main water source). Their bravery stopped a full-blown meltdown from occurring. It s a horrifying moment and one that is fully brought to claustrophobic life through nothing more than dim lighting, the men s belabored breathing, and their radiation detectors constant ticking sound: an ominous reminder of just how embedded in the chaos they really are. The scene is so stifling that we d be hard-pressed not to mention our own shortness of breath upon viewing the episode. While we ve seen instances of such events play out in big-budget action films, it s worth noting here that before 1986 the world had rarely faced a catastrophe like this, one whose impact on humanity and mother nature would reverberate on such a mind-boggling scale. And that detail brings with it an even more baffling truth: No one knew how to fix it.Soviet nuclear physicist Valery Legasov (Jared Harris) and Soviet Minister of Energy Boris Scherbina (Stellan Skarsgård) are brought in to investigate and ultimately clean up the mess, rightfully carrying the story as the chemicals and news of the accident spread. It really is a rousing spectacle when you take a step back and view the miniseries from afar. The addition of Emily Watson s Ulana Khomyuk — who Mazin said is a fictional character, created as an amalgamation of the nuclear scientists called in to fix things — adds an insightful layer to the world-building of Chernobyl. It was five years before the Soviet Union crumbled, meaning in 1980s Russia women were rarely seen in such scientific roles. The antiquated nature of the gender roles portrayed here gives clarity to a society and time we Americans only know passing information about. It s probably worth noting that the Chernobyl accident happened the same year the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded and the news of that tragic instance quickly dissipated.

Never mind that the last two have had Rotten Tomatometer scores; these things keep making hundreds of millions of dollars. The latest is The Lion King, and it’s one of the most anticipated movies and most pre-sold releases of the year. Fortunately for the fans, critics are mostly positive on this one so far. The effects and voice performances are all stunning, according to reactions out of this week’s premiere, and while it’s not a necessary redo, it’s definitely worth seeing. Here’s what critics are saying about The Lion King on social media:Is this one of the good live-action Disney remakes?Whatever your feelings on Disney remakes, this one will blow you away. Jenna Busch, Legion of LeiaIt’s easily the best of Disney’s remakes. Laura Prudom, IGN MoviesLoved loved loved The Lion King. Drew Taylor, MoviefoneBetter than I thought it’d be! Ben Pearson, SlashfilmBut is it necessary? It’s a good Disney remake, but was it necessary? Maybe not, but it’s enjoyable. Peter Sciretta, SlashfilmDid we need a live-action version of The Lion King? Maybe not… but this version is beautifully crafted by Jon Favreau…gives me all the feels on being back on Pride Rock. Kit Bowen, We Live EntertainmentWhile it s a story you know, it s soooooo well done. Steve Weintraub, ColliderThe Lion King will be a touching introduction to a timeless story for a new generation, but I’d never rewatch it over the original. Laura Prudom, IGN MoviesRyan FujitaniSo we ll like it if we like the original?Really, if you’re hoping this will be a near-exact adaptation of the animated movie with some absolutely jaw-dropping visual effects, you’ll get what you’re looking for. Terri Schwartz, IGN MoviesThe Lion King is a wonderful adaptation of an iconic classic. It has a few small changes which enhance what was already great and everything else is right on point. Germain Lussier, io9The Lion King does a really excellent job of honoring the original movie but also adds touches for this modern version. Those touches are a lot of fun and totally welcome. Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comI still really miss the exaggerated emotions of the characters from the original, but you get occasional flashes in this. Ben Pearson, SlashfilmThe Lion King is exactly as advertised: a beat-for-beat remake of the original… it’s more nostalgic rehash than fresh reimagining. Angie Han, MashableNostalgia hits HARD with The Lion King. It’s wonderful to see the story again on the big screen presented in a different way. The cast is amazing and to hear James Earl Jones as Mufasa again put a huge smile on my face. Oh yea, that stampede scene still gets me. Wendy Lee Szany, Schmoes KnowThe Lion King has always been my favorite Disney animated movie and this new rendition is a beautiful reminder why. Happy to welcome back familiar chills, emotions and tears. Perri Nemiroff, ColliderHow is Beyoncé?Beyoncé is good in The Lion King — really good! Nala’s role is indeed bigger, and Bey suits it perfectly. There’s a moment when she tells Simba he’s ‘disappointed’ her, and reader, the way Bey bit the ’t’ in that word chilled me and thrilled me. Adam B. Vary, BuzzFeed NewsBeyoncé is a spirited Nala. Angie Han, MashableBeyoncé and Donald Glover are fine if underused. Terri Schwartz, IGN Movies(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)How about the comic relief?Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen as Timon and Pumbaa stole the show and made me laugh so hard I almost cried. Shannon McGrew, Nightmarish ConjuringsTimon and Pumbaa steal the show. Chris E. Hayner, Hollywood ReporterTimon and Pumbaa are everything. Perri Nemiroff, ColliderThe vocal performances are largely good enough to make up for the rest [of the criticisms]. Eichner and Rogen steal the movie. Ben Pearson, SlashfilmJohn Oliver is an ideal Zazu. Angie Han, MashableAre there any other standouts?Chiwetel Ejiofor is brilliant as Scar! Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comIf you thought [Florence] Kasumba stole that scene in Civil War, just wait. In a movie full of great performances, she was the stand out. Daniel Radford, Screen JunkiesYoung Simba JD McCrary stole the goddamn show. He’s so charming and brings great energy to, again, the cutest goddamn baby Simba you can hope for. Terri Schwartz, IGN Movies(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)How are the visual effects? It’s the most beautiful effects movie I’ve seen. Like next level, the game has changed kind of thing. Mike Ryan, UproxxThe Lion King is a landmark *visual* experience. I’ve never seen anything like it, and I think it’s going to change how we look at movies forever. Adam B. Vary, BuzzFeed NewsThe attention to detail by Jon Favreau and the VFX team on The Lion King is just incredible. Beyond incredible. It looks so real so often. Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comVisually, it’s stunning an unparalleled technical achievement that’s like watching a nature documentary. Laura Prudom, NerdistIt’s a visual masterpiece that will leave you smiling and crying the whole time. Beatrice Verhoeven, The WrapA breathtaking visual cinematic achievement. I can’t believe this is a CG animated movie. Peter Sciretta, SlashfilmMy fear was realistic animals wouldn’t have the charisma of the cartoon, but they’re very good. Chris E. Hayner, Hollywood ReporterThe Lion King does illustrate the limitations of projecting human emotions onto photorealistic animals that can t convey human expression. Alisha Grauso, Film School RejectsThe CG can be slightly distracting at times but the emotion quickly covers that. Germain Lussier, io9How is the soundtrack? The Lion King might be the first animated movie to win the same Oscar twice. Jim Vejvoda, IGN MoviesThe Lion King’s story and music are great because they’re the same, and the few minor updates are all smart and well-placed. And unlike Beauty and the Beast, they cast people who can sing without auto tune. Laura Prudom, NerdistFor the first time in maybe my entire life as the movie started I got really emotional. Just hearing the music wrecked me. Steve Weintraub, ColliderSome of the song/choreo arrangements don’t work as well as the original but still a really fun flick. Chris E. Hayner, Hollywood Reporter(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Are there any problems? As an *emotional* experience…I’ll put it this way: It turns out lions can’t really emote. Adam B. Vary, BuzzFeed NewsThe hyper realism wasn’t a problem for me at all, the characters were still expressive, but your mileage may vary. Danielle Radford, Screen JunkiesAre audiences going to respond to this?Families are gonna love it. Peter Sciretta, SlashfilmNot sure I ve ever heard as much clapping during a movie as I did tonight at The Lion King. Was like being at a rock concert. Movie is going to make so much money. Steve Weintraub, ColliderThe Lion King opens everywhere on July 19.

Join us weekly as Rotten Tomatoes reports on what s indie features are streaming. From promising releases by new voices to experimental efforts from storied filmmakers – or perhaps the next indie darling to go the distance for end-of-year accolades – we will break it all down for you here each week. For the foreseeable future, the specialty box office and all theatrical releases will be on hold as we all make efforts to socially distance ourselves and reduce the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. With that in mind, we have reshaped our Indie Fresh List to include VOD and select drive-in releases. This week we have three horror films one about a killer rideshare, one about a stranded astronaut with a secret, and a punk rock slasher horror-comedy. In our Spotlight section, we have a documentary about a political experiment with the youth of Texas and a chat with the film s directors, award-winning documentarians Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine. Finally, we have new trailers featuring Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield, Robin Williams, and Janelle Monáe.New This Weekend
This Week s Ketchup brings you seven headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Community, Hellraiser, and Stephen King s Salem s Lot. This WEEK S TOP STORYJOEL MCHALE SAYS THE COMMUNITY MOVIE MAY STILL HAPPEN(Photo by Mitchell Haaseth/©NBC courtesy Everett Collection)The hashtag #SixSeasonsandaMovie is now frequently used by fans of lots of different TV shows who hope for success for a given show, but it actually had its origins with NBC s Community. That ensemble sitcom was cancelled after just five seasons before it eventually got its sixth season through the short-lived Yahoo! Screen streaming service, but there s never been much movement about a movie. Things are looking up, however, for the future of Community. In addition to recently being added to Netflix, many Community creatives have gone on to great things (Dan Harmon and Rick and Morty, and Joe and Anthony Russo have directed some of Marvel s biggest movies). Joel McHale (who, earlier this week, was the host of the Tiger King reunion special) was asked about the possibility of a Community movie, and his response was, There’s way more rumblings than there used to be. Alison [Brie] tweeted that she got a phone call from Sony. They still haven’t called me; maybe Matthew Lillard will take over. But I would say there’s a better chance than there’s ever been. It s not yet known if the Community movie has been written yet, or who might direct, or who indeed from the cast would return for it.Other Top Headlines1. STEPHEN KING S VAMPIRE EPIC SALEM S LOT RESURRECTED AS MOVIE (Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Dozens and dozens of Stephen King novels and stories have been adapted as movies, especially from the first 20 years or so of his career. Yet, while this period is very well represented on film, two of his biggest novels from that time were only ever adapted as TV mini-series, not as movies. The Stand is currently in the works as a new mini-series for CBS All Access, and we can now confirm that Salem s Lot is also in the works as a movie. Salem s Lot (short for Jerusalem s Lot, hence the apostrophe) was a vampire novel in 1975 that became a two-part CBS mini-series in 1979 starring David Soul and directed by Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Poltergeist). New Line Cinema has hired screenwriter Gary Dauberman to direct their adaptation of Salem s Lot from his own screenplay. Dauberman made his directorial debut last year with Annabelle Comes Home (Fresh at 65%), and as a screenwriter, he worked on films like Annabelle, The Nun, and both IT and IT: Chapter Two. Presumably, the next step we will hear about will be the casting of the human male lead and the Austrian vampire leader Barlow.2. FIRST IMAGES FROM DENIS VILLENEUVE S DUNE SURFACE ONLINE(Photo by Chiabella James/Warner Bros. Entertainment)With the movies originally scheduled for April, May, June, and most of July now being pushed back because of COVID-19, the marketing strategies for the movies scheduled for later in 2020 are also facing new challenges. Many of these movies will probably end up being pushed back to 2021, but one film that appears to be standing its ground is Warner Bros. new adaptation of (the first half of) Frank Herbert s classic science fiction novel Dune. First adapted to film by David Lynch in 1984, Dune is a sweeping epic with dozens of characters, which lends itself well to having a huge star-driven ensemble cast, and that s what the new Dune (12/18/2020) from director Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Sicario, Blade Runner 2049) promises. Vanity Fair got the scoop on the first cast images, which include our first glimpses in character (in order) of Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Javier Bardem, Oscar Isaac, and Jason Momoa, among others.3. JENNIFER LOPEZ TO STAR IN ANOTHER TRUE CRIME STORY AS THE GODMOTHER (Photo by JA/Everett Collectio)Sometimes movie stars who do biopics bear a striking resemblance to the real life personalities they portray, and sometimes they don t. Let s start this story with this mugshot of Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco Restrepo from 1997 when she was 54, so you can quickly see where we re going with this, because Jennifer Lopez is now attached to star in The Godmother, the biopic about the life of Griselda Blanco. The film is being produced by STXfilms, the same company behind Lopez recent hit, Hustlers (also based upon a true crime story), and it will be directed by Reed Morano (I Think We re Alone Now, The Rhythm Section, TV s The Handmaid s Tale) from a screenplay by William Monahan (The Departed, Kingdom of Heaven).4. LEONARDO DICAPRIO OFFERING WALK-ON ROLE IN MARTIN SCORSESE S NEXT FOR CHARITY (Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures) Martin Scorsese s next film as director, the serial killer true story Killers of the Flower Moon, is currently experiencing some issues with its budget, which is rumored to be in the 0 million range. Paramount is possibly getting nervous, and both Apple and Netflix are being seen as streaming options. While all that continues to get figured out, the film s stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro are now partnering with an organization called the All-In Challenge to raise money for charities like Feeding America, Meals on Wheels, No Kid Hungry, and World Central Kitchen. Donors will be entered for a chance at both a walk-on role in Killers of the Flower Moon, as well as a trip to the film s eventual world premiere.5. JAMES GUNN CLAIMS NO DELAYS FOR THE SUICIDE SQUAD AND GOTG 3 (Photo by Jay Maidment/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)The current COVID-19 pandemic is causing so many films to be delayed and events to be cancelled that there is a strong argument to be made that the only real news these days is when something is not delayed or cancelled. That s exactly why we re drawing your attention this week to this update from director James Gunn, who said that there is no reason for his next two films to be delayed in any way. Those films are, of course, The Suicide Squad (8/16/2021) and his return to Marvel with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Of course, there is some irony in Gunn saying that the release date for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 won t be delayed since there isn t currently a release date for the film in the first place.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019) 95% You d be forgiven for thinking A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood was a biopic of American children s television icon Fred Rogers, especially considering an acclaimed documentary about the man was released just last year and Tom Hanks, who plays him in the new film, is plastered across all of the marketing. Directed by Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), the based-on-true-events story actually follows the account of journalist Tom Junod, who was assigned to profile Rogers for Esquire magazine and ended up forging a close friendship with him. Matthew Rhys plays a stand-in for Junod named Lloyd Vogel, a cynical writer who approaches the interview with the intent of rooting out a flaw and publishing a juicy exposé. Instead, Rogers gets Vogel to open up about his troubled past, and the two come to a mutual understanding as Vogel s mistrust melts away. Critics say A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is, as expected, powerful and moving in its portrait of Fred Rogers, but it s also clever in the way it filters the larger-than-life icon through the eyes of a skeptic. Tom Hanks is appropriately charming, and Matthew Rhys is equally effective as the man whose walls gradually come down, and Marielle Heller s direction offers just enough surprises to ensure the emotional charge of the film feels more authentically sweet than cloying. Just make sure to bring the tissues for this one.

Toy Story 4 is nothing if not sincere. During a one-and-a-half-day visit to the Pixar campus in Emeryville – part of the California East Bay golden triangle of art-driven cities including Oakland and Berkeley – over a dozen supervisors, writers, and digital artisans hosted workshops and seminars about their upcoming June movie to answer the question that s on all our minds: Why? Why make another Toy Story? Especially when Toy Story 3 felt like the end; Andy passing his toys on to the next generation as he moves to college, the camera panning up to the sky, a bookend with the same clouds that opened the Toy Story back in 1995. Toy Story 3 delivered a mint-in-box rarity in today s world of tempting serialized storytelling and cinematic universes: A sense of finality, and closure. Why mess with that?Minor spoiler warning: This article describes the opening scene of Toy Story 4!It started in 2014.We re sitting in a board room with Pixar character modelers, directing animators, and story supervisors and artists. Like the rest of the world, they tell us, Pixar had moved on from Toy Story, not expecting to see the franchise s characters on the screen again, outside of shorts and television specials. Monsters University had just released. They were gearing up for the one-two punch of Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur in 2015. Amidst the streamlined chaos, an impossible idea persisted: That there was still more Toy Story to tell, and it deserved to be on the biggest screens possible across the world. The idea turned to talk, turned to pencil against paper, turned to cursors across monitors, turned into crews and planning and development, until Toy Story 4 moved into The Steve Jobs Building, the campus section where movies are officially in production.BO PEEP FINALLY GETS HER DUEPixar story supervisor Valerie LaPointe tells the room that there are people at Pixar who, as children, had their world expanded watching Toy Story in theaters in 1995, who now get to work on the fourth, and understand the legacy they re molding on their computers every day. To LaPointe s left are five women, who minutes before had each spoken about their role on TS4, nodding in agreement. They are a crucial creative force at Pixar, and instrumental in forging the emotional ace of the new movie: Bo Peep. The porcelain lamp with her flock of sheep (voiced, as always, by Annie Potts) had a minor but memorable role in the original Toy Story as Woody s flame, with less to do in Toy Story 2. And while the main characters got their glorious (seeming) sendoff in Toy Story 3, Bo wasn t there at all, having been reduced to a sacrificial plot point to motivate and illuminate her boyfriend s emotional pain. Clearly, there was more story to tell, because her story hadn t been told at all.Toy Story 4 opens with a flashback. It s nighttime at Andy s house, in the middle of a downpour, set a bit before Toy Story 3. R/C is outside caught in a gutter torrent, spinning his wheels to keep from getting sucked into a sewer drain. Bo and Woody, always the contingency planners, execute a rescue mission that saves R/C and leaves Woody momentarily underneath a car in the driveway. Everything looks photo-decadent: the rain, the lighting, the subtle scuff on Buzz s plastic armor plating. Pixar has found new vistas to paint once again. Then, the bombshell: Molly, Andy s sister, is growing up and Bo s watch has ended – she s being carried in a box to the car, and soon to be off into the great donated unknown. Bo has accepted her fate, having long since known a porcelain lamp doesn t have quite the shelf life of a talking cowboy or space commando. Woody is frantic, and he attempts to get her out of the box. Bo does the opposite, offering a place beside her. Just as Bo knows her destination, Woody knows his is entwined with Andy, and as the car peels off, he s left in the driveway splintered by the rain. It s not quite Up territory in terms of Pixar opening-scene tearjerkers, but considering we ve known these characters for nearly 25 years, it s damn close.EYES PEELED FOR PLENTY OF PIXAR EASTER EGGSFor eagle-eyed viewers, something may catch your attention: The car s license plate – always cinematic fertile ground for easter eggs, especially in Pixar films. RMR F97, the plates read. But what does it mean? It is an easter egg! director Josh Cooley laughed during our press conference. On Toy Story 2, there was someone who worked on the show that accidentally deleted the movie from the render farm, producer Mark Nielsen said, who worked modeling and shading on Toy Story 2. That was the command on the computer that deleted the film. Galyn Susman, who was an early producer on this film, was on maternity leave and had a backup of the movie at her house, and brought it back to Pixar and restored it, added producer Jonas Rivera. It felt appropriate that the license plate on the car that takes Bo away would be the same that killed Toy Story 2. From the filmmakers words and the footage and material shown, it becomes apparent Toy Story 4 will probably become the most easter egg-laden movie the studio has ever produced. At one point, Woody and Forky – a spork with googly eyes and pipe-cleaner arms come to life, who exists as his own existential quandary – end up in an antique store. Full of neat knick-knacks and weathered baubles, it s a set piece that puts Pixar s detailed creativity on full display, not to mention plenty of references to their past.Look for a sign that says Papa Rivera s, a reference to the aforementioned producer. The Eggman Movers truck, around since the first Toy Story, makes a comeback, long known to be tied to art director Ralph Eggleston. From Finding Nemo, you can see the tiki heads from the fish tank on some shelves. There s steel decoration for Catmull s Brews, named after Ed Catmull, who s been with the company since the beginning and is retiring the month after Toy Story 4 is released. The Catmull sign hangs over a pinball machine whose interior has been turned into a miniature nightclub; Tinny, from the 1988 short Tin Toy, is the bouncer. (And for you pinheads out there, the machine was modeled after Bally s 1977 Black Jack – and we saw that tucked away in a room at Pixar HQ when we were doing a workshop making our own Forkys.)A FEMALE VILLAIN, FULL-ON BODY HORROR, AND BOO?Elsewhere in the antique store, Woody and Forky meet Gabby-Gabby, an angelic 50s doll and the first female antagonist of the series. Gabby Gabby commands a league of dapper and wholly unsettling ventriloquist dummies who do her bidding, like trying to rip out Woody s voice box to replace her own broken one. To set the body horror mood, Gabby Gabby puts on a record playing music from Coco, the vinyl pressed on the prestigious Chalupa Records. And that s not the only Coco reference. Part of the road trip includes visiting a carnival fair across the street from the antique store, which is where Woody reunites with Bo, who has been leading a joyous, independent, if not occasionally challenging life as a lost toy. One of the carnival game prizes is the guitar from Coco. And who s joined in among the festivities? A teenage Boo from Monsters, Inc, who appears to have not changed her style since 2001. Hey, purple shirts and scrunchies are eternal! And all those easter eggs were from less than 30 minutes of footage. As Toy Story 4 has been in the works for the last five years, the studio has seen some major changes. Ed Catmull is retiring. Beloved animator Bud Luckey passed away (he was all over the classic Boundin short). And founder John Lasseter left in scandal. It’s been a different time from their heyday, when Pixar racked up 11 Certified Fresh movies between Toy Story and 3; then a record, now overtaken by Marvel Studios current 14. During the visit, it s clear here was a movie being made by people both filmmaker and fan, who see this as a continuation of the golden age. Maybe they re always like this with their movies. For anyone born after 2010, this is the first chance to watch a new Toy Story on the big screen. It could even be their first movie theater experience ever. That s quite the gift. It s the same one Pixar offered in 1995, and many people who took it back then, grew up, got a job there, made Toy Story 4, talked to a bunch of press, and now get to offer it up to a new generation. Returning to the toy cowboy who s devoted to the joy of others, Pixar has become the studio it always was: A house of toil and dream, where old things find new life.Like this? PRETTY MUCH EVERYONE WANTS TO WORK WITH JOHN BOYEGA (Photo by Everett Collection)It s not uncommon for Hollywood celebrities to voice their political opinions, and when they do, there are sometimes unintended consequences. Recent Star Wars alumnus John Boyega took to the streets in London this week for a Black Lives Matter protest in support of the movement against police brutality, which sparked up again dramatically following the death of George Floyd at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis, MN on May 26. During an impassioned speech, Boyega acknowledged the risk inherent in an entertainment figure speaking out in such a manner, saying, Look, I don t know if I m going to have a career after this, but f that. As it turned out, he didn t have anything to worry about, because a deluge of support came in from Hollywood filmmakers eager to work with Boyega on future projects. The list includes Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us), who said, We got you, John Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie); Lin-Manuel Miranda, who said, Oh god I WISH Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz), who said, Have before and would again Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep); Olivia Wilde (Booksmart), who said, Absolutely Peyton Reed (Ant-Man), who said, Anytime at all and also the official Star Wars Twitter account. Boyega s next two films are likely to be an action thriller called Rebel Ridge and a legal drama called Naked Singularity, but it looks like he ll have no shortage of options after that.2. J.K. SIMMONS CONFIRMS RETURN TO SPIDER-MAN(Photo by (c) Columbia courtesy Everett Collection)For the most part, the Spider-Man movies starring Andrew Garfield and now Tom Holland have gone their own way with casting the supporting characters. However, fans were surprised at the end of last year s Spider-Man: Far from Home (Certified Fresh at 90%) to discover that Marvel Studios actually brought back J.K. Simmons for a brief cameo as J. Jonah Jameson, the role he played Sam Raimi s three Tobey Maguire-led Spider-Man films. The cameo seemed to tease a potential premise for Tom Holland s third solo Spider-Man movie, and this week, Simmons confirmed that he is indeed signed to return for more Spider-Man sequels (note the plural there). There was, however, some doubt in his statement, because Simmons said, I don’t know if I would use the word ‘expect' when asked if fans can expect to see him in the next film. The next Spider-Man doesn t have an official title (though it s rumored to possibly be Spider-Man: Home Run), but it does have a release date scheduled for November 6, 2021 (pushed back four months from next July due to pandemic-related production delays).3. THE FIRST FEMALE STAR WARS DIRECTOR GETS READY TO KILL THEM ALL (Photo by Jesse Grant/Getty Images)As director J.J. Abrams was preparing to return for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Rotten at 52%), one of his key creative decisions was to make history by hiring actress-turned-filmmaker Victoria Mahoney as his second unit director, making her the first ever woman to serve as a director on a Star Wars film. Mahoney is now signed with Paramount Pictures for what will be her first film as a director (not counting second unit, obviously) since her 2011 debut drama Yelling to the Sky, and it will be an action movie called Kill Them All. The screenplay by screenwriter James Coyne will be an adaptation of an Oni Press graphic novel described as a love letter to 1990s action movies about a hard-drinking former cop who wants his job back and a betrayed murderess who team up to take down a vicious Miami crime lord.4. SCORSESE HAS REWRITTEN DICAPRIO S ROLE IN KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON(Photo by ©Warner Bros./courtesy Everett Collection)For pretty much the entire time that Martin Scorsese has been developing his adaptation of the true crime novel Killers of the Flower Moon, about an early serial killer case investigated by the F.B.I., he was planning on working with frequent collaborators Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. Along the way, we learned that De Niro was to play the serial killer, and that DiCaprio would be playing one of the lead F.B.I. agents investigating the case. Unfortunately, having Leonardo DiCaprio in a lead role may have led the film s budget to balloon past 0 million. In an effort to keep that cost down, Scorsese has reportedly made changes to DiCaprio s role, which will now instead be a villain (or anti-hero) who is a nephew of De Niro s character and leaves the door open for another (cheaper) actor to play the federal agent. The revelations of these changes came out due to Apple taking over Killers of the Flower Moon from Paramount Pictures. Paramount will still release Killers of the Flower Moon theatrically, and then the film will move to Apple+ for streaming.5. TITO PUENTE BIOPIC NOW BEING DEVELOPED BY EDWARD JAMES OLMOS (Photo by Everett Collection)Thanks to the recent success of Bohemian Rhapsody (Fresh at 60%), Rocketman, and Judy, we re currently in the midst of a mini-boom for musician biopics. The pandemic has obviously delayed film production and release, but two movies that will come out soon are the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect (starring Jennifer Hudson) (12/25/2020) and Baz Luhrmann s Elvis Presley project (11/5/2021), while other musicians with biopics in development include the Bee Gees, Boy George, Whitney Houston, Bob Marley, and Amy Winehouse. Thanks to Edward James Olmos, we can also now add Tito Puente, the King of Mambo, to that list, as Olmos is now working with Puente s family and estate on film and TV projects based on Puente s life and legacy. Before his death in 2000 at the age of 77, Tito Puente had a 50+ year career that included six Grammy Awards (including a lifetime achievement award) as a mambo and Latin jazz musician, band leader, songwriter, and record producer. Puente s most famous song was probably Oye Como Va (thanks in part to Santana also recording the song for their 1970 album Abraxas).6. MORBIUS DIRECTOR TAKING ON THE TRUE STORY OF THE EXECUTION (Photo by Jasin Boland/©Universal courtesy Everett Collection)Before the current pandemic caused industry-wide production delays, Sony s adaptation of the Marvel Comics vampire character Morbius (starring Jared Leto) was to have been released next month on July 10, 2020 (it s now scheduled for March 19, 2021). Morbius was directed by Daniel Espinosa (Child 44, Safe House), who this week entered into a deal to develop The Execution, which is described as a narrative drama about the background to the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, the Saudi Arabian-born dissident and Washington Post columnist who was killed in Istanbul in 2018. The true story behind The Execution will be adapted by screenwriter Petter Skavlan, who also worked on 2012 s Kon-Tiki (Certified Fresh at 81%), which was based on the true story of Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl s expedition across the Pacific Ocean on a raft.
