Some of those questions will no doubt concern “Crisis,” but we expect each group will have something to share bout the crossover even the Black Lighting team, who stay out of the crossovers. If you love these shows and want to see the Marvel Studios presentation, make your choice early and camp out in the appropriate hall.Syfy and IDW Entertainment: Wynonna Earp (Indigo Ballroom, 5 p.m.)It’s been a crazy year for Earpers. At Comic-Con 2018, the cast and crew announced they would be back for a fourth season. But just as production was supposed to start, it smacked up against a long delay and obscure studio politics. But the show is coming back, and stars Melanie Scrofano, Katherine Barrell, Chantel Riley, Greg Lawson, and Michael Eklund – along with executive producer Emily Andras and Wynonna creator Beau Smith – return to Comic-Con once more to tease the definitely soon-to-be-in-production fourth season. Of course, if you’ve ever been to a Wynonna Earp panel, you know they tend feature a lot of fans expressing their love for the show. It will get loud.DC Universe Series Sneak Previews And Q A (Indigo Ballroom, 7 p.m.)DC Universe is gearing up for its second year and it s bringing previews of the upcoming Harley Quinn animated series, the second season of Titans, and more to its two-hour Comic-Con presentation. Talent and producers of the various series will appear and there will probably be a few surprises. We’re hoping we’ll get confirmation about Doom Patrol’s second season and even a last-second reprieve for Swamp Thing, which was cancelled before its second episode debuted, but continued to air the entirety of the first season and turned out to be our favorite comic book show of the early summer.Sunday(Photo by Marc Hom/The CW)Riverdale Special Video Presentation and Q AThe cast and crew of Riverdale close out Comic-Con’s Comics on TV presence with their yearly Hall H appearance. Expect fans to swoon over stars KJ Apa and Cole Sprouse. Also expect executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa to offer a bit of info which seems important, but ends up quite tangential to the Season 4 mystery. Will Jughead (Sprouse) be dead by spring break? Will Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos) exact his revenge on Veronica (Camilla Mendes)? The two would engage in a back-and-forth battle that featured atomic breath and lightning strikes, and King Kong would ultimately leave the grueling brawl victorious. The Ishirō Honda-directed film, King Kong vs. Godzilla, was the third Godzilla film produced by Toho Studios, and it was a wildly ambitious crossover event that was a smashing success in Japan, as it sold 11.2 million tickets during its initial theatrical run. In other words, audiences went bananas for it.Decades later, both Godzilla and King Kong have appeared in dozens of movies and animated series that have seen them battling three-headed monsters, genetically-modified roses with sharp teeth, and New York concrete. The two haven’t shared a screen together since that colossal battle in 1962, which is why the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong feels like such an epic event. To get to this brawl, Legendary Studios embarked on a kaiju-sized film series called the “MonsterVerse” that kicked off in 2014 with Godzilla (2014), then continued with Kong: Skull Island (2017) and, most recently, Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). The three films have set the chess pieces, and now the two gigantic titans will tussle for the ultimate checkmate.(Photo by Everett Collection)In honor of their rematch, we rewatched the King Kong vs. Godzilla Versus episode that was released in 2019 and analyzed their filmographies in an attempt to crown a statistical champion based on box office receipts, property destruction, amount of screen time, and Tomatometer and Audience scores. Two monsters (and their many variations) enter, and only one leaves (unless there’s a tie, in which case, come back for the rematch).*Quick note Not all of the King Kong and Godzilla films have Tomatometer scores or reliable box office data. That’s why the numbers fluctuate in each round. Both franchises started off really well as 1933 s King Kong (Certified Fresh at 98% on the Tomatometer) and 1954 s Godzilla (Certified Fresh at 93%) were both blockbusters that wowed people with their innovative photography and beautiful miniature sets. However, the quality of the films began to mirror one of Godzilla’s fights He’s winning! He’s losing… He’s winning! He’s losing…What sealed the deal for Godzilla’s victory is the 0% score for 1986’s King Kong Lives. The movie famously tells the story of what happens after Kong survives the fall from the Empire State Building. In short, he gets a heart transplant, eats some alligators, finds a soulmate, and fathers a child. Of course, any happiness they do find is going to come sprinkled between a lot more suffering and loss, and that continues in the premiere. The Alexandrians are not only forced to rebuild much of the community after that destructive showdown with the Whisperers, but they’re frighteningly low on food supplies, with more mouths to feed.Some, like Aaron (Ross Marquand), think they need to push through and get the crucial repairs to the walls completed, while others think they need to go on a massive food hunt so they can provide sustenance for that hard physical labor. Maggie (Lauren Cohan) even knows the exact place they can find all the food they’ll need for the near future, but, like with anything in their world, it’s going to require a dangerous mission to retrieve it.Which brings up the question of how, after all they’ve been through, all the tragic losses, all the times they’ve had to start over and rebuild, how do Maggie and company find the gumption, the physical, mental, and emotional energy to keep going after all these years?(Photo by Josh Stringer/AMC)“I think for our people, they have just been struggling and struggling to survive, [but] they remember that there have been times that are good,” Kang said. “So they re reaching for that. I think all of those folks who are parents, all the characters that just, regardless of whether they have people who are related by blood, they are all bonded together as friends and as people who ve traveled a long, hard road together. And I think even for characters that don t feel the gumption in themselves, I do think a lot of them feel the drive to help those that they love. And that s, in some ways, what s keeping them growing during a time when it feels like so much hope is lost.“After everything they ve been through, to have it fall apart after this long, it is really quite crushing for many of the characters. But I think a lot of them find themselves asking the question, ‘Can we actually rebuild from this when it s just worse? We ve been brought so low.’ So that s just one of the things that they re all grappling with as the season goes on,” she said.(Photo by Josh Stringer/AMC)Maggie, in particular has a lot, and then some, on her plate. When she tells her friends about this source of food she can take them to, it requires finally sharing with them her most recent trauma, and, without spoiling specifics, let’s just say that particular trauma may not be in her past.And speaking of bad things not in her rearview mirror, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is very much still on Maggie’s mind, since she’s now living in the same community with the man who brutally murdered her husband right in front of her. Negan’s redemption was easier to buy since Maggie was out the picture, but as much as his friendship with Judith (Cailey Fleming) has helped us see him in a different light, seeing him through Maggie’s eyes, reminded of what he took from her and little Hershel Rhee (Kien Michael Spiller), has made it easy to understand why all she wants to do avenge Glenn’s death every time Negan enters her path.And, again, no spoilers, but when they’re thrown together in the premiere, there are murderous thoughts all around. She wants him dead. He knows it (not like she’s trying to hide it). He knows the only way he’s going to survive is to change her mind about him, or make sure she dies first. Bottom line, it’s tough to see how both of them are still standing by series’ end.(Photo by Josh Stringer/AMC)Which brings us to the goals for this final season of the original series — the spin-offs, including the upcoming Kang-led sequel featuring Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride), will go on. What do the writers hope to wrap up? Where do they hope to leave the group in general?“The thing that s interesting is, when we started work on the season, we didn t know that we were starting work on what was going to wind up being the last season of the show,” Kang said of the supersized season, which will consist of 24 episodes, released in batches of eight each, through 2022.“But hopefully whenever we re writing, we re always writing with the viewpoint in mind of like, ‘We have to tell a story that feels really, really cool. We hope it leaves people wanting more,’ she said.“As we get further into the season, there are definitely places that we want to land people at the end of the series. But plotting that out is not even entirely different from what we try to do every year, which is think about, ‘Where are our characters at? Where do we want to leave them when we end the season?’ It s just that, obviously, it takes on a different level of importance, so we really spent a lot of time talking about each person and what their journey might be,” she said.(Photo by Josh Stringer/AMC)And how did Kang and the other writers and producers think about the season, and how it would end, in terms of Walking Dead fan expectations?“I find that our fandom, it stretches across different people with different taste, so depending on the person you ask, I really think you re going to get a very different answer,” said Kang, who’s worked on TWD since she was hired as a story editor in season 2. “I think the core of what holds the fans together is that they care about the characters and want to feel that they re watching a story about them that allows them to understand more about what they re thinking and what they re working through and how hard they re fighting to survive. And I think obviously they do like that there s a sense of adventure stakes, like the scares, and, yet, feeling like people can overcome when they need to by standing together.“Those of us that work on the show, all of us love the show, we love the comics, we love the genre. So I think we lean toward our internal sense as fans ourselves of what s entertaining for us and what we find moving or scary. Hopefully, those feelings are aligned with the audience, but we don t always know, and we can t always control that. We hope that people have a good time and get something out of it, even if certain fans go, ‘You know what? I didn t really resonate with that particular episode, but then the next one I really love.’ And a lot of that is us realizing we re writing for a variety of people. Even within our own writer s room, there are certain stories or certain characters that people are really drawn to, or they go like, ‘Ah, that s OK for me, but I really, really like this other thing.’”(Photo by Josh Stringer/AMC)The first two episodes of the season, “Acheron: Part I and II,” feel like one feature-length story, and should include something for every fan’s taste, from an opening reminiscent of a certain iconic Tom Cruise movie scene and all the Maggie/Negan drama to a sweet reunion (Daryl hugs!) and that aforementioned ending for episode two.“We definitely have a sense of ongoing story that also carries through some of this,” Kang said. “But as with every season we do, the show kind of reinvents itself every so many episodes. So we have some arcs that are more contained. And then within that, we sometimes have episodes that feel almost like their own little movie, and then we have some stories that are running (across) many episodes. So it s a mix of all of that, over 24 episodes.”The Walking Dead season 11 premiere is now streaming on AMC+ and airs at 9/8C on Sunday, August 22 on AMC.

9.66.3 2月喜迎Sterling K. Brown Waves (2019) 84%Who doesn’t love Sterling K. Brown? The This Is Us star has charmed his way into the hearts of America with his moving and hilarious portrayal of Randall on the hit NBC drama. Even more impressive, the actor managed that while filming his performance in the third effort for up-and-coming indie favorite Trey Edward Shults – that s right, he shot a full feature film while the weekly drama was still in production. Waves is a film that is best enjoyed when you go in knowing as little as possible, so we don’t want to give too much away here, but the Emmy winner s turn as the stern and demanding father to Kelvin Harrison Jr.’s model minority son is frightening, charismatic, and gut-wrenching. Perhaps the largest obstacle in the way of Brown making it to Oscar night will be how the Academy reacts to the film s distinctive narrative style.Tom Hanks, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019) 95%It is fitting that the nicest and most beloved man in Hollywood would portray the nicest man to ever grace our television screens. Fred Rogers was an icon of children’s television and a relentless advocate for the value of carving out a safe space for children on our airways. Since the first trailer was released back in July – and sometime before that, if we re being are honest – Tom Hanks has been on just about every prognosticator’s shortlist for Oscar glory. (Though the same was said of his performance in The Post back in 2018, and he failed to garner a nomination.) Marielle Heller, who directed Richard E. Grant and Melissa McCarthy to dual Oscar nominations last year in Can You Ever Forgive Me?, is poised to maybe do the same for Hanks and lead Matthew Rhys in 2020. Perhaps after a couple of nominations for Heller’s film, we can finally get over the fact the Mr. Rogers documentary Won t You Be My Neighbor? failed to make it to Oscar night this year.Joe Pesci and Al Pacino, The Irishman (2019) 95%(Photo by Netflix)Last year, during the Oscars ceremony, as Netflix was racking up multiple wins from its 15 nominations, the studio opted to play a teaser for Martin Scorsese s upcoming and long-awaited film The Irishman. It was a signal to the Academy and anyone who was watching that regardless of what happened that night, they were just getting started. With the movie currently Certified Fresh at 97% on the Tomatometer, Scorsese and company are set to rack up multiple nominations, including likely dual nominations for Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. The latter came out of retirement to play quietly menacing mob figure Russell Bufalino in the film, while Pacino portrays the teamster boss Jimmy Hoffa. Both men are operating at the height of their powers for this new mob epic based on a script by Steven Zaillian. The only thing standing in the way of Pacino or Pesci taking home the top prize is Brad Pitt, but more on that later.Jamie Foxx, Just Mercy (2019) 85%(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)The Academy is particularly fond of films that pair riveting performances with a timely message (see BlacKkKlansman and Get Out for recent examples). Just Mercy is a true-life adaptation of Bryan Stevenson’s book chronicling the Harvard Lawyer s founding of the Equal Justice Initiative and his attempts to navigate the perilous world of death row incarceration and bring exoneration to those wrongly convicted. Set in the heart of Alabama, the book and movie from director Destin Daniel Cretton both shine a light on the systematic racism of our criminal justice system, which so often unjustly incarcerates African-Americans. One of Stevenson’s first and most high-profile clients, Walter McMillian, is the focus of the narrative and is brought to life by Jamie Foxx. Foxx is powerful and tragic as the downhearted inmate just months away from execution, and he is getting his best reviews since his Oscar-winning role in Ray. Foxx’s history with the Academy and the film s subject matter place him as a strong contender, though if there were any real justice in this world, his co-star Rob Morgan would be right there in contention with him for his brief but powerful depiction of another death row inmate.Brad Pitt Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood (2019) 85%With such a stacked field, star power could be the thing that tips the vote – and no one has more star power than Brad Pitt. Now that we are confident the A-lister is competing for the supporting category and not for lead, we are placing our money on his chances for a nomination and potentially winning it all. This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Black Canary, The Matrix: Resurrections, and Nosferatu.This WEEK S TOP STORYANYA TAYLOR-JOY REUNITES WITH ROBERT EGGERS FOR A NOSFERATU REMAKE(Photo by James Devaney/Getty Images)Although most people first saw The Witch in 2016, the film actually had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival a year earlier in January, 2015, where it was very well received. In between that premiere and its theatrical release, director Robert Eggers was able to begin development on a dream project, a remake of the 1922 vampire horror film Nosferatu (Certified Fresh at 97%), which Werner Herzog previously remade in 1979 (Certified Fresh at 95%). Since then, Eggers has instead directed The Lighthouse (Certified Fresh at 90%) and the upcoming Vikings epic The Northman (4/8/2022), but it s sounding like his Nosferatu movie might finally start filming soon. Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen s Gambit, The New Mutants), who first came to prominence as the star of The Witch, revealed this week that she will be reuniting with Eggers for Nosferatu.  More immediately, however, Taylor-Joy will be starring in the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa (as Charlize Theron s character), for which she has been learning to do some of her own high-speed stunt driving.Other Top Headlines1. DISNEY CASTS YOUNG MUFASA AND SCAR IN THE LION KING PREQUEL (Photo by ©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)The success of The Lion King (Certified Fresh at 93%) in 1994 led to an entire franchise consisting of sequels and TV shows. The CGI remake in 2019 (Rotten at 52%) was also a huge box office success with over .6 billion worldwide, but instead of a sequel, Disney is going the prequel route this time. The first two stars to be announced for the Lion King prequel are Kevlin Harrison, Jr. (The Trial of the Chicago 7) as the young Taka (aka Scar) and Aaron Pierre (The Underground Railroad) as the young Mufasa. Director Barry Jenkins (Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk) has started production on the prequel, which Disney describes as being live action, though it s probably more likely to be photorealistic CGI (since Disney also called the 2019 movie live action despite most of the movie actually being CGI animation).2. SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME CONFIRMS RETURN OF DOC OCK AND OTHER VILLAINS (Photo by Marvel Entertainment)Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige started the week by coyly telling Collider that the first trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home (12/17/2021) would definitely come out before the movie does. What Feige couldn t have predicted was that within 24 hours, someone would leak a version of the trailer online, albeit filmed off someone s phone and missing most of the special effects. That led soon after to the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer being officially released, special effects in place and everything. The trailer sets up the One More Day-style premise pretty clearly (which is also leading to a certain long-simmering fan theory), as Peter Parker seeks Doctor Strange s help after his identity goes public, ruining his life and that of those closest to him. The trailer also shows the return of Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus, and also seems to tease the returns of other villains like the Green Goblin, Sandman, and others. The trailer proved extremely popular, as it even broke the 24-hour record previously held by Avengers: Endgame.3. THE MATRIX: RESURRECTIONS TITLE AND PREMISE REVEALED(Photo by ©Warner Bros.)We don t have a trailer yet for the long-awaited sequel known until this week as The Matrix 4, but at the CinemaCon event for theatrical exhibitors, Warner Bros. revealed that the title will be The Matrix: Resurrections, and by showing them the first trailer, we also got our first synopsis. As the trailer starts, Keanu Reeves is back to being Thomas Anderson again, who tells his psychiatrist (Neal Patrick Harris) that he s been having strange dreams, for which he starts taking blue prescription bills, until a mysterious man (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) gives Anderson a red pill. Along the way, we also see Anderson meeting a woman played by Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity), and that most of the people around him live their lives staring at their phones. Warner Bros. will likely release the trailer to the online public soon, but we don t know for sure when that will be yet. The Matrix: Resurrections is currently scheduled for release on December 22, 2021.4. CHRISTIAN BALE TO PREACH TO THE CHURCH OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY  (Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/©Paramount)Hollywood hasn t completely given up reading source material other than comic books. Every once in a while, we still hear about mid-range dramas adapted from magazine or newspaper articles, such as the 2019 Vanity Fair article The Church of Living Dangerously: How One of America s Biggest Pastors Became a Drug Runner for a Mexican Cartel. And in the spirit of the very best subtitles, that one also basically tells you exactly what the movie The Church of Living Dangerously is going be about. Christian Bale is now attached to star in the film adaptation as Oregon preacher John Lee Bishop, whose church became so large it took up an 8,500 square foot former K-Mart superstore, before he eventually became a drug smuggler. The Vanity Fair article will be adapted for the film by screenwriter Charles Randolph, who previously worked with Christian Bale on another true story, The Big Short (Certified Fresh at 89%).5. IN THE HEIGHTS STAR COREY HAWKINS JOINS THE COLOR PURPLE MUSICAL REMAKE (Photo by Steve Mack/Everett Collection)In 1985, Steven Spielberg directed the drama The Color Purple (Fresh at 81%), adapted from the novel of the same title by Alice Walker. Starting in 2005, The Color Purple was also adapted as a Broadway stage musical, which Warner Bros. is now adapting into a movie. Corey Hawkins, who recently starred in the movie adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda s In the Heights (Certified Fresh at 95%) is the first actor announced for the movie musical, reportedly as the character named Harpo, the character married to Oprah Winfrey s Sofia in Spielberg s film. (Side note: Harpo also happens to be Oprah spelled backwards, and it s the name of her production company.) Warner Bros. is now testing actresses opposite Corey Hawkins to play his wife. The Color Purple will be directed by Ghana-born filmmaker Blitz Bazawule, who previously directed Beyonce s Black is King (Certified Fresh at 94%).6. JAKE GYLLENHAAL JOINS ROBERT KIRKMAN S OBLIVION SONG (Photo by Anne Marie Fox/TM & ©Copyright Fox Searchlight)Comic book writer Robert Kirkman has also had success with the adaptations of both The Walking Dead (and its spinoffs) and the recent Amazon Prime animated series Invincible. Kirkman also created the comic book Oblivion Song, set in a world where 300,000 residents of Philadelphia suddenly disappear mysteirously. Jake Gyllenhaal is now attached to produce and star in an adaptation of Oblivion Song, as a man who makes daily trips to Oblivion , the part of Philadelphia from which the people went missing. Gyllenhaal has two wrapped films opening soon: The Guilty (10/1/2021) and Michael Bay s Ambulance (2/18/2022).7. BLACK CANARY TO GET HER OWN SPINOFF MOVIE AFTER LAST YEAR S BIRDS OF PREY (Photo by Claudette Barius/©Warner Bros.)One of the last major movies released just before movie theaters shut down last year was the DC Comics movie Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (Certified Fresh at 79%). It remains unclear if that film will ever get a direct sequel, but one of the characters is now likely to receive her own solo spinoff. Jurnee Smollett is attached to reprise her character for Black Canary, which is being developed by Lovecraft Country showrunner Misha Green for HBO Max. It s not yet known if any other Birds of Prey characters will return for Black Canary, or when the film might debut on the streaming service.8. TIFFANY HADDISH JOINS ANIMATED/LIVE-ACTION COMEDY ABOUT AN IMAGINARY FRIEND(Photo by Michele K. Short/Universal Pictures)Tiffany Haddish has been keeping so very busy and prolific that one could easily forget her big breakthrough role in Girls Trip (Certified Fresh at 92%) was only four years ago in 2017. Haddish has three wrapped films awaiting release (The Card Counter, Easter Sunday, and Nicolas Cage s The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent), and is also attached to star in Disney s next Haunted Mansion movie. She isn t slowing down, either, as this week she signed with Universal Pictures to star in their animated/live-action hybrid family comedy I.F. (shot for Imaginary Friend), although it s unclear whether she s playing the imaginary friend or the human character. I.F. will be directed by Mike Mitchell (Shrek Forever After, Sky High) from a screenplay by Darren Lemke (Goosebumps; co-writer of Mitchell s Shrek Forever After). I.F. also has competition at Paramount with Imaginary Friends, a comedy with a similar premise that may co-star Ryan Reynolds and John Krasinski.9. JASON MOMOA AND DAVE BAUTISTA HOPE TO DO A BUDDY COP MOVIE WITH DAVID LEITCH(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, JA/Everett Collection)Most new movie projects are announced via the rather old fashioned route of press releases and articles in trade publications like Variety or The Hollywood Reporter. This week, Jason Momoa decided to go a very different route, as he broke some big news during an interview on The Late Late Show with James Corden while promoting Sweet Girl (Rotten at 16%). Momoa told Corden that he and Dave Bautista (who are both in the upcoming Dune remake) plan on doing a Lethal Weapon-style buddy-cop movie with director David Leitch (Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde), who reportedly called the pitch interesting (though that is far from a confirmation that Leitch will actually direct it).On an Apple device? A group of people enter to clean up the place, some who harbor dark histories. Sound like a set up for classic dark and stormy Gothic tale? Not so with Session 9. What kind of clean up crew would work at night? Come on, this is a horror movie: Logic is king here. A slow atmospheric burn with minimal gore until its final minutes, but even when things go to hell, the blood is bathed in New England sun.9. Freddy s Coming For You in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) 95%Time for a victory lap: Hop into the convertible on this bright school morning having vanquished the tormentor of fatal dreams, turn around and wave goodbye to your mom standing on the porch. Suddenly, the top slams down and the car peels down the street, as mama is sucked through the front door window. The nightmare has only just begun. The original Friday the 13th s Jason Voorhees made the last-second jump scare a mandatory inclusion for 80s slashers and beyond. Freddy Krueger may have perfected it.8. Michael Myers Stalking in Halloween (1978) 96%John Carpenter s classic did a lot of things right. Gave us a classic creepy synth score. Destroyed suburbia s manicured image as a stronghold of safety and comfort. And it rolled out the red carpet to let masked killer Michael Myers to wander and stalk his prey in broad daylight. The shot of Myers staring up at you from among the billowing laundry sheets hung to dry in the yard remains an iconic and violating image.7. The Day After in The Hills Have Eyes (2006) 52%The Carter family is subjected to a litany of brutal terror over the course of 24 hours. During the initial day, they re led off-road and their car gets mangled in the desert. The family separates in search for help. A dog gets gutted. The gas station attendant commits suicide. And always mutants are watching them from afar in the brush and rocks, leading to a long night of crucifixions, immolation, rape, murder, and baby-snatching. And then the next day, the cannibals feast on sun-cooked flesh. It s a torturous chain of events that transforms the remaining Carters into out-for-blood hunters in a highly questionable, deeply satisfying revenge ending.6. Randy s Death in Scream 2 (1997) 81%You knew director Wes Craven wasn t fooling around when he killed off know-it-all cinebuff Randy, portrayed by Jamie Kennedy as someone as smart and cynical as the audience. How could he have fallen for the afternoon masked killer in the local news van with noisy nearby breakdancers? Oldest trick in the book! But it s also series most shocking homicide outside of Drew Barrymore s, the one that tells the oh-so-smart audience that no one was truly safe. The Arquettes, Courteney and David as Gale and Dewey, frantically search for the killer in the college square by accosting students with their new-fangled mobile phones, presenting on screen when awful taunting calls escaped the constraints of landlines and curly cords, and into a new world of free-roaming terror.5. The Ceremony in The Wicker Man (1973) 88%Midsommar owes a blood debt to this provincial classic: the unsettling tale of an uptight Christian cop investigating a young girl s disappearance on an island of decadent mystic pagans has thematic and visual parallels to Aster s film. Likewise, nearly the entire movie is set during the day among verdant nature and maypole celebrations and foreshadowing musical rhymes that seem to follow the officer everywhere he goes. It s far too late when he realizes the true nature of his work, leading to a fiery climax in the friscalating dusk light.4. The Premonition in Final Destination 2 (2003) 48%Some of the best horror wedges its way into the normal, degrading the routine and humdrum into a morass of paranoia and fear. Final Destination 2 does that with the daily morning commute, because what could be more humdrum than getting in our 1,000 lb. metal husks every day, navigating them manually down the road as cars careen towards us in the opposite direction separated only by capriciously painted lines on the ground? Suddenly, something as innocent as a flatbed of loose tree logs becomes a rolling thunder revue of broken windshield, splattered heads, and Michael Bay–style auto explosions.3. The Opening Chase in 28 Weeks Later (2007) 71%28 Days Later s famous opening features calm shots of the hero wandering an empty London metropolis depopulated by zombies moments we would consider eerie, almost beautiful, but not scary. 28 Weeks Later takes the opposite approach. It s set in the countryside, as a band of infected descend upon defenseless survivors. The camera is in your face, the footage choppy and frantically (but not confusingly) edited, save for a gliding crane shot as our new hero flees across the field and towards a waiting river boat. The fact that he just abandoned his wife to the zombies moments earlier contribute to the gut-punching bleakness of the situation. Now that we consider scary.2. Leatherface Appears in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) 89%Like a rusty chainsaw, Tobe Hooper s horror masterpiece takes a moment to rev up. But once it gets going, the movie is relentless, grinding down the viewer s endurance up until the famous ending of Leatherface cutting the rising sun light in boiling anger. It s a great final appearance, but his first introduction is even better. Hapless travelers, in search of gas for their thirsty boogie van, approach a piquant homestead, oblivious that its inhabitants are cannibal freaks who have no qualms doing their dirty deeds in daylight. Leatherface suddenly appears from out of a hallway, smashes his victim s head in with a hammer as the body crumples and twitches on the ground, and then slides the slaughterhouse door shut. Looks like meat s back on the menu, boys!1. The Beach Attack in Jaws (1975) 98%The scene that made a generation of filmgoers terrified of open water. It s immaculately crafted pop horror and it still works today. Steven Spielberg uses a collage of beach crowd noise and throngs of people innocently rising to disorient the viewer, telling us to be just as alert as Roy Scheider s police chief. Spielberg famously had to use every filmmaking tool he knew to overcome critical obstacles like a malfunctioning shark, and here heightens and stylizes reality as Jaws approaches the beach. A split diopter lens shot puts an obtrusive face and a possibly drowning distant swimmer in equal focus. A dog is discovered missing. We get that terrifying first-person viewpoint as Jaws picks his victim, and the incessant John Williams theme building on the soundtrack. Then a dolly zoom as terror dawns on Schieider s face. A geyser of blood erupts out in the ocean as pure pandemonium breaks out, and a frantic mother loses her son. The movie is Certified Fresh at 95% and made a cool .2 billion at the global box office in its first weekend. It could very well turn out to be the biggest movie ever – and one of the most beloved. The key to its success? Critics say it s all about giving the MCU s loyal fans what they want. Eric Eisenberg of Cinema Blend was typical in his assessment, calling Endgame,  A wonderful gift to all those who have spent the last decade-plus emotionally engaging with the lives and adventures of these characters.” It s stacked with f k yeah moments and delights, the best of which make callbacks to early films in the franchise.And one of those movies is more important than any other.So, hear us out: Endgame owes much of its success to that under-sung hero of the MCU, Avengers: Age of Ultron. While one of the least popular entries in the MCU, and the lowest-rated Avengers flick on the Tomatometer at 75% (which is still not bad!), Ultron deserves credit as the foundation on which the entire second half of the MCU was built. And we re about to make a spoiler-filled case as to why, breaking down the story beats and relationships that Ultron established and that Endgame would use to such great effect – so be warned if you ve not seen Endgame, Ultron, or both.Major spoilers for Avengers: Endgame follow. Hulk Taking Control of Both Sides? It Started With Ultron.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Around the time of Age of Ultron, there was still hope at Marvel that they would be able to make a deal for the Hulk and start a string of Hulk-only movies. Universal still owned the rights to the character for all standalone films, but behind the scenes, there were talks. When it became clear that a deal was not going to be forthcoming, Marvel spread the planned events for a standalone Hulk film throughout Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor: Ragnarok, and the Infinity War two-parter. That’s right, the seeds of the fantastic Hipster Hulk payoff in Endgame were first sewn in Ultron. Think back to the Hulk/Banner in Ultron; he’s held back from the team at times to make sure he doesn’t do too much damage. Then, after a wave of the finger from Scarlet Witch, he wreaks havoc. Throughout Ultron, Banner is always questioning whether the team needs a ‘code green.’ He knows the Hulk s a powerful weapon, but he s terrified that he s not in control. By Endgame, we ve finally seen the complete character arc from this struggle in Ultron, to the Hulk completely taking over in Thor: Ragnarok, to Banner s inability to summon the green guy in Avengers: Infinity War, to the eventual blend of the Hulk s might and Bruce s mind in the new movie. (The latest incarnation is a play on a storyline that first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #377, in which Banner finally has control of both the monster and his mind – adding hipster glasses with a huge cardigan is just a lovely bonus.)The Start of a Beautiful and Pivotal Relationship: Wanda and Vision, a.k.a. WandaVision.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)The WandaVision relationship, as well as their powers, would become crucial to the MCU and especially to the Infinity Saga. It is also central to two of the saga s biggest moments: it s Vision s death in Infinity War that breaks our hearts, and it s Wanda s moment of revenge and power in Endgame that gives us such great feels. And that all started with Ultron. From her first encounter with Vision in Age of Ultron, Wanda is drawn to his mind; even when we still didn t know if he was good or evil, her first words about him were, “I can read him… his mind. Ultron introduces Wanda and her brother to his creation in the final stages of completion and even before his birth, Vision s mind called out to her. Talk about a meet-cute.When we finally learn Thanos master plan to gather all the Infinity Stones, we realize quickly that Vision will be in danger. The Mind Stone is the origin of his powers – it s literally fused to his head using whatever tech stuff Shuri was talking about in Infinity War. That connection sets up what might be the Infinity Saga s ultimate and most painful sacrifice: Killing Vision in Infinity War as a last-ditch effort to thwart Thanos turns out to be a pointless and heartbreaking effort – with a twist of the Infinity Gauntlet, it is all undone. We watched them fall in love, beginning in Ultron, and witnessed their tragic end in Infinity War. When she appears in Endgame, summoning her powers in fury, it s a completely satisfying bookend to everything Ultron began.Who is worthy? THE PERFECT SETUP FOR CAP S BIG HAMMER MOMENT.In one of the best scenes in Age of Ultron, the Avengers pal around with a few drinks at an afterparty. What is played as an entertaining comedic break, with the various members trying to lift Thor’s hammer, Mjölnir, actually sets up one of the biggest moments of Endgame. Iron Man, War Machine, Hawkeye, and – comically – Bruce Banner all try to lift the hammer and prove themselves worthy. None are successful, but for one brief moment, Captain America tugs at Mjölnir, and it quivers. The movement wipes a confident smirk off Thor’s face and signals that maybe Steve Rogers could one day wield the hammer. So it’s no surprise in the finale of Endgame to see who is lifting Mjölnir. Thor even exclaims, “I knew it!” (It s actually another direct pull from the comics: Captain America is one of the few worthy enough to wield the hammer forged in the heart of a dying star – we re still getting goosebumps just thinking about it.)Clint Barton, Hawkeye, and the farm.According to Ultron director Joss Whedon, there were several creative differences between him and Marvel Studios during the filming of Age of Ultron, none more contentious than the debate over the trip to the farm to meet Clint’s family. Marvel brass were apparently not into giving Hawkeye a familial backstory – having seen Endgame, we re thankful they lost on that one. The broken, singularly focused, vigilante Ronin that Hawkeye becomes in Endgame doesn t have the same resonance if we haven t spent time with his family. (And what about that opening scene?!) The device of the farm is also used to further establish the closeness between Natasha and Hawkeye, as in Ultron we learn that she is the only one with prior knowledge of the farm and his family life. These quiet moments raise the emotional stakes of the fight we see between Clint and Natasha in Endgame, as they do battle over who will sacrifice themselves for the Soul Stone. Without the Ultron setup, those stakes would not be so high.Tony vs. Cap: A Civil War begins.Civil War may have been the first battle between the Avengers, but some early, quiet shots were fired in Ultron. The argument on the farm during which Steve scolds Tony for creating, and especially for not telling him about, Ultron, is one many will point back to as the start of their fracturing. Then there is the physical fight between Captain America and Iron Man that happens later in Ultron, while Tony tries to finish his Vision . Steve and Tony come to blows about it just before Thor harnesses lighting to finally birth Vision. The Russo brothers told us in our extended interview that the Avengers failed in Avengers: Infinity War because they were divided, and the cracks of that fatal divide first began to appear in Ultron. Even direct quotes from Age of Ultron reappear in Endgame with Tony repeating his warning, “We’ll lose – adding Steve’s reply of “We’ll lose together” is of little solace. That broken version of Tony, ripping his core from his chest, was perhaps even harder to watch than his heroic end.Tony, always trying to get ahead of things.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)It starts and stops with Tony. The whole plot of Ultron comes from one driving force: Tony’s fear of the next thing from space trying to annihilate the earth. That up there, he quips, pointing to the sky and referencing the alien invasion of New York. That s the endgame. And it was, in every sense of the word. Thanos does come to destroy the earth, and that threat is what the Avengers were created to stop. Tony, in creating Ultron, was trying to win a war before it started; during the wood cutting argument, Steve astutely reminds him, “Every time someone tries to win a war before it starts, people die.” Before the events of Ultron, Tony created Veronica just in case they ever lost control of The Hulk (or a lullaby didn’t work). The Hulkbuster back-up plan kind of worked. That drive to plan ahead, to be prepared, may have been a fatal flaw with Ultron, but it also allowed Tony to outsmart Thanos in Endgame. The glove Tony installs on his suit to steal the infinity stones is just that type of planning. He was reluctant to join the second fight and the visions of defeat he saw in Ultron still haunt him, but he was, in the end, able to use that fear to defeat their most formidable foe. It s a complete bookend to the character and his essential motivation.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)And there are so many smaller Ultron setups:Ragnarok: Heimdall first teases Ragnarok and the fact they will lose in Thor’s vision before he later heads to a cave to get more answers. Thor sees the Infinity Stones and the gauntlet for the first time. More breadcrumbs to our final battle.Avengers Assemble: The “Avengers Assemble” line that Captain America calls out in the final battle was first teased in Ultron. A near synonymous tag line for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, it is a line comic book fans have been waiting to hear. We cut to credits before Cap could call it out in Ultron, but we finally get it in Endgame.Wakanda: In a quick scene with Ulysses Klaw, we first hear reference what would turn out to be the key destination in the highest-grossing superhero movie ever – before Endgame. Part of what marginalization from cinema does to the self-perception of an underrepresented community is that it tricks us into believing we were absent from its larger history. But though equity remains distant – especially when thinking about the greater diversity within a single ethnic group – our work has long uplifted and helped evolve the art form.Pioneers of Hispanic descent in the United States have been lending their wide-ranging talents to the medium of film since its earliest days in ways that have impacted the dominant culture. On the occasion of Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15), we are celebrating some of these groundbreaking mavericks who, through their craft and vision, accomplished boundary-pushing firsts in their field or dared to go against the current of established conventions and laid the foundation for others to follow in their steps.These 10 names can’t fully encompass the breadth of more than a century of contributions, but their momentous triumphs provide a sense of our outsized contribution to and influence on cinema. Her debut performance in 1914’s Salomy Jane, as a woman after revenge, launched a streak of successes. Before the decade was out, she had starred in 16 features playing roles that challenged the conventions for women at the time that featured horseback riding and fight scenes. Beyond her allure in front of the camera, she was also an entrepreneur, deeply involved in the moviemaking process, who eventually became the co-owner of a studio, the California Picture Company, with husband George E. Middleton. No picture since motion pictures came into being has more of beauty, action and heart interest than this masterpiece at a single bound Beatriz Michelena, the star of the Western idyl, has assumed a place second to none as a motion picture actress. Early in his career as an animator, he was involved in some of Walt Disney Animation Studios most iconic 1940s features, including Pinocchio, Bambi, and Dumbo. Yet, his most substantial contribution to the medium and culture at large was ushering Charles Schultz’s Peanuts comic strip characters from the pages to the screen with the blessing of the creator. Over a 50-year career, he directed numerous television specials featuring the gang, most notably the classics A Charlie Brown Christmas and It s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. (He is directing young voice actors for the latter in the photo above.) Director Bill Melendez concentrates on atmosphere more than anything else; he sets up unrelated jokes, or simply enjoys watching the autumn leaves fall gently to the ground. Anderson, Combustible CelluloidRoberto Gavaldón(Photo by courtesy the Everett Collection)A prolific director during the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema who worked with some of the era’s most prominent stars, Roberto Gavaldón began his career in film as an extra for studio productions in Los Angeles. Upon returning to Mexico in the 1930s, he climbed his way to the director’s chair wearing many hats behind the scenes. In 1955, after success at home, Gavaldón directed his only American film, The Littlest Outlaw, which was a Disney production with an all-Mexican cast lead by Pedro Armendáriz. His 1960 effort Macario, grounded in the Day of the Death tradition, became the first Mexican film to be nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. Director Roberto Gavaldón takes this basic situation and weaves skillful action, centering his story on Andres Velasquez, whose performance has seldom been equaled by a child thesp in point of appeal. Romero(Photo by © Orion/courtesy Everett Collection)The influence of Night of the Living Dead in horror cinema is so immeasurable that it’s difficult to conceive it was George A. Romero s first film. Considered the father of zombie movies, the visionary artist, whose father was Spanish, made that defining production with a minuscule budget through a production company he founded with friends: Image Ten. With his subsequent output in the genre, Romero built a catalogue of brilliantly disturbing fantasies that includes The Crazies, Dawn of the Dead, and Creepshow. Presumed lost for decades, his 1973 film The Amusement Park was ultimately undead : Restored from a 16mm print unearthed in 2017, it was finally released earlier this year, almost half a century later. Night of the Living Dead gets through by tapping some real apprehensions A true piece of modern American gothic, the film has the wit to use horror instead of being used by it.  Review of Night of the Living Dead by Penelope Houston, The Spectator, June 20, 1970Gregory Nava(Photo by ©New Line Cinema/courtesy Everett Collection)Responsible for some of the most emblematic and beloved movies about Hispanics in the U.S., director Gregory Nava has repeatedly broken new ground. Although best known for My Family, an ensemble epic across borders that deals with the mass deportations of people of Mexican descent in the late 1920s and 1930s, and Selena, a biopic on the late Texan singer that catapulted Jennifer Lopez’s acting career, his 1984 drama El Norte made history. The lyrical story of two Guatemalan immigrants in Los Angeles was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, and it’s one of the few films by a U.S.-born Hispanic director to be part of the National Film Registry and the Criterion Collection. The film is sweet but never cloying. The continuity doesn t break because the actors all excellent convincingly resemble the others who played the same characters in the past. [Full review in Spanish] Review of Mi Familia by Rene Jordan, El Nuevo Herald (Miami), May 9, 1995Joseph B. Vásquez(Photo by © New Line/courtesy Everett Collection)For Afro-Latino writer-director Joseph B. Vásquez, filmmaking came into his life when he got his hands on a Super 8 camera at the age of 12. Fighting his own battles with mental illness as a child raised around addiction, he turned his creative lens to the complexities of life in the South Bronx, first with projects he developed by sheer determination. The pinnacle of this thematic exploration came with Hangin with the Homeboys, a semi-autobiographical work produced by New Line Cinema that drew from his own experiences as a biracial young man in NYC. (A portrait of the cast is seen above.) The comic drama, which won the Screenwriting Award at the 1991 Sundance Film Festival, starred John Leguizamo in one of his first major roles and follows a diverse group of friends. Vasquez open-hearted view toward his characters redeems even the hoariest clichés of this otherwise engaging and admirable addition to the guys-night-out sub-genre. Review of Hangin with the Homeboys by Gene Seymour, Newsday, May 24, 1991Lourdes Portillo(Photo by Amanda Edwards/WireImage)Straddling the culture line between Mexico and the United States, documentary filmmaker Lourdes Portillo has aimed her inquisitive gaze at social justice issues across the Americas since the late 1970s. For her 1985 feature, The Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo, which focuses on a group of fearless women demanding answers from the Argentine government about their disappeared loved ones, she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary as co-director with Susana Blaustein Muñoz. Portillo’s profoundly personal and artistically bold work The Devil Never Sleeps, which chronicles the mysterious death of her uncle, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 1995. [Lourdes Portillo] manipulates her film intercutting it with Mexican soap operas, projecting interviews onto the frames of sunglasses to point to the melodrama her family mystery has become. The effect is breathtaking. Review of The Devil Never Sleeps by Hazel-Dawn Dumpert, L.A. Weekly, Nov. 2, 1995Patricia Cardoso(Photo by eff Kravitz/FilmMagic, Inc)A native of Bogota, Colombia, Patricia Cardoso had a previous existence as an anthropologist before venturing into cinematic storytelling. In 1996 she became the first Hispanic woman to win a Student Academy Award for her short film The Water Carrier. That milestone was followed by what would become her most notable work to date, the coming-of-age story Real Women Have Curves. Telling a cross-generational saga centered around Mexican-American women, this landmark film – recently added to the National Film Registry – was based on the play by Josefina Lopez and gave America Ferrera her first-ever role. (The director is pictured with Ferrera above.) Cardoso also became the first Hispanic woman to win the Sundance Audience Award for this singular take on womanhood. Firmly entrenched in Mexican American culture without the insistent need to be about the culture, it s one of the best Latino films ever made.  Review of Real Women Have Curves by Omar L. Gallaga, Austin American-Statesman, Oct. 25, 2002Ramón Menendez(Photo by © Warner Bros. / courtesy the Everett Collection)Cuban-American director Ramon Menéndez s first behind-the-scenes credit was as an assistant director on Oliver Stone’s Salvador. His breakthrough came in 1988, helming Stand and Deliver, a moving drama about real-life teacher Jaime Escalante that earned Edward James Olmos an Oscar nomination. For his work, Menendez won two Independent Spirit Awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay (with co-writer Tom Musca). This inspirational tale, now in the National Film Registry, also won the prize for Best Feature and has become a staple at schools across the nation.  Menendez was also one of the screenwriters behind Tortilla Soup, a heartfelt comedy about a Hispanic chef and his three daughters that became a box-office success. Director Menéndez has skillfully captured both the school and the kids home environments. Nothing is prettified. We are given barrio life in its beautiful-ugly rawness. Casting choices for the kids are generally brilliant. Review of Stand and Deliver by Ruben Martinez, L.A. Weekly, Mar. 17, 1988Robert Rodriguez(Photo by ©Columbia Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)Back in the early 1990s when El Mariachi was released, the story of its making (with a jaw-droppingly modest price tag of ,000) instantly put the spotlight on Robert Rodriguez for being a fiercely resourceful talent in independent cinema. The feat had even greater value considering his action-packed debut was in Spanish and shot in Mexico. Since then, the Mexican American director has continued to dismantle preconceptions about what Hispanic stories can be with the success of the Spy Kids franchise and titles such as Sin City and Machete. Throughout his many projects, he’s made it a mandate to cast U.S. born Hispanics as well as Latin American and Spanish talent, helping names like Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas break into the Hollywood machine. [Robert Rodriguez s] brio is infectious – not just because he s so willing to try anything but because he has a born comedian s superb sense of timing. For all its gunplay and dead bodies, his movie works like an expertly honed stage farce.
