bob体育网址登陆采用百度引擎9(Baidu 9)(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)There are few horror sequels that live up to their predecessors, and even fewer third installments that manage to prove their worth. Of the latter, there is one that stands tall and surpasses expectations, despite the fact that the movie that spawned it is widely considered one of the greatest horror movies of all time, not to mention one of the few that was ever nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. We re talking, of course, about The Exorcist III, written and directed by William Peter Blatty (author of the original Exorcist novel and screenplay) and set 17 years after the end of the first film, completely ignoring everything that happened in the famously panned Exorcist II: The Heretic. In contrast to that critical and commercial failure, The Exorcist III successfully pays respect to its originator without drowning in nostalgia and features legendary actors at the top of their game, all while delivering a top notch mystery and quite possibly the best jump scare in horror history. To celebrate the film s 30th anniversary, grab your crucifix and comically oversized scissors and hear us out while we explain why The Exorcist III deserves to be held up as a horror classic, just like the original.IT FEATURES POWERHOUSE PERFORMANCES FROM A LEGENDARY CAST(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)At the center of The Exorcist III is a series of grisly murders eerily similar to the those of a serial killer who died 15 years prior to the events of the film. It s a surprisingly intimate and grounded plot, considering the franchise s previous reliance on supernatural phenomena. Our main entry point into this story is Lieutenant William Kinderman, a minor character from the first Exorcist, here played by George C. Scott. Right out of the gate, The Exorcist III places a bigger focus on characters and realistic dialogue than typical horror film conventions.Scott s Kinderman spends just as much time thinking about and working on the murders as he does bantering with his good friend, Father Dyer (Ed Flanders). William Peter Blatty s dialogue feels lived-in and, enhanced by Flanders calm and warm delivery and Scott s perfectly sarcastic, curmudgeonly line readings, makes viewers feel as if they re eavesdropping on real conversations between old friends. Even as the film s plot grows increasingly dark and spiritual, the actors make the story feel like part of daily life, as if it all actually happened.THE VILLAIN IS HANNIBAL-ESQUE(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Even when The Exorcist III introduces its villain, who may or may not be the re-animated corpse of a priest possessed by the aforementioned serial killer, the film keeps it grounded by focusing on what s been said and how it s said, rather than what actually happens. Brad Dourif conjures up a masterful performance as the so-called Gemini Killer, menacing his way through vile, gnarly monologues a year before Anthony Hopkins enraptured audiences with the same methods in The Silence of the Lambs.Indeed, the short but crucial time Dourif spends on screen is reminiscent of Hannibal Lecter s presence in Silence, but Dourif separates his performance from Hopkins by playing more into the violence his character represents. He is nearly lyrical in his voice, transforming from casual and even funny to homicidal in mere seconds. The director s cut of the film goes even further, offering not one but two uniquely different yet equally enthralling performances by Dourif. While he alternates with Jason Miller, who reprises the Father Karras role from the first Exorcist here, in his scenes from the theatrical cut, really playing into the violence that lurks within Gemini, the director s cut presents a much more restrained performance that keeps the audience guessing whether they re seeing an actual serial killer or a mere madman who s been psychologically affected by a near-death experience.IT EXPLORES RELIGION AND MORALITY IN AN INCREASINGLY SECULAR WORLD(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)If the first Exorcist was a film about reconnecting with religion in the face of adversity, then The Exorcist III is all about turning one s back on spirituality, about the way madness becomes an invitation to evil. Indeed, Kinderman spends as much time talking to his friend Dyer about the movies he loves as he does questioning the existence of a loving, Christian God in the face of suffering, disease, and murder. The film is constantly looking at characters who have experienced severe trauma and who have gone through crises of faith during the events of the first Exorcist, and explores the Catholic guilt they re struggling with. Kinderman often wonders if he s done enough enough to save Father Karras 15 years ago, enough to stop the killings he s investigating, enough to protect his family and friends. For most of its runtime, The Exorcist III remains somewhat ambiguous as to whether there s anything supernatural going on. The director s cut in particular leaves the question of the Gemini Killer s identity a secret, and it completely redefines the film s ending, depending on how you view it. Is this an act of the devil, or simply human evil? To that end, the film s ending becomes not about embracing religion again, but about a man who — in the face of utter defeat — decides not to wait for a higher power to come down and help him, but to take back control, even if it costs him everything. Evil exists, the movie argues, but it s up to us to keep that evil at bay, because there may just not be an equal force of good to counteract it.IT FEATURES ONE OF THE BEST JUMP SCARES EVER PUT ON FILMIn a surprising move for a 1990s horror film, The Exorcist III features relatively little gore, and it still manages to be utterly terrifying. The film takes more of a David Fincher-styled approach to horror, using noir tropes and filmmaking sensibilities to manipulate the audience s imagination and build and maintain tension. The characters in the film discuss every graphic detail of the murder scenes, but we never really see them. In one monologue, the Gemini Killer explains that the human head can still process what it sees for 20 seconds after it s been decapitated, and he uses that time to show his victims their own lifeless bodies. It s both horrific and effective, without spilling a drop of blood on screen. And yet, none of this compares to the single scene that has arguably become more well known than the film itself — the hospital jump scare. Most of the film s legacy lies with this single scene, which is widely considered one of the best jump scares in history, and for good reason. Throughout the film, Blatty keeps his filmmaking restrained, with few camera movements. He lingers on seemingly inconsequential backgrounds, emphasizing the emptiness surrounding the characters, as he does in this scene, keeping the camera trained on a nondescript hospital hallway. Blatty raises the tension through stillness rather than with sound, making the audience wait just long enough before finally breaking the silence and releasing the tension with a shocking jump scare that works no matter how many times you see it. It s the same approach that The Conjuring films have employed, only done decades earlier, and it remains one of the most effective scares ever produced. There are many reasons why The Exorcist is still considered one of the greatest horror films of all time, and there are valid reasons why The Exorcist III doesn t reach the same heights. But there is no denying the sheer ambition in William Peter Blatty s film, and the choices he made managed to turn an intimate, small-scale story into a horror classic in its own right.Where You Can Watch It NowFandangoNOW (rent/own), Amazon Prime (streaming), iTunes (rent/own), Peacock (free with ads), tubi (free with ads), Vudu (rent/own)The Exorcist III was released on August 17, 1990.

I feel like you don t see that very often, that kind of specific bond. That s definitely a beautiful moment and Dorothy realizes she s not alone. That everyone goes through [something like] this.(Photo by DC Universe)Niles just wants to protect Dorothy, but he also wants to protect the world from Dorothy. How do you think The Candlemaker s arrival, which is teased at the end of this episode, impact their relationship moving forward?Shapiro: I can t say too much because I don t want to spoil anything … I feel like there s definitely regret on not being completely honest. But I feel like, just that moment of the candle wax exploding and The Candlemaker emerging is everything she s been hiding, everything she s been holding deep down inside her for so long. It s just bursting at the seams. All those emotions she was holding in are just exploding. The Candlemaker is all about granting wishes because, after the third one, he becomes real. What do you think Dorothy s biggest wish is?Shapiro: I think her biggest wish is really anyone s biggest wish: just to be accepted, to have a family, and to be loved.Doom Patrol season 2 is now streaming on HBO Max and DC Universe.

LeBron James suits up in the modernized update as, well, himself as he is transported to a digital realm ruled by an all-powerful A.I. named Al G. Rhythm (Don Cheadle). In order to free his son (Cedric Joe) and return to the real world, LeBron rallies a team of familiar characters Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Lola Bunny, and more to defeat Al G. s own digitized Goon Squad. Ahead of the film s release, Rotten Tomatoes correspondent Naz Perez chatted with stars Cheadle, Joe, and Sonequa Martin-Green; voice actors Zendaya and Gabriel Iglesias; and director Malcolm D. Lee about why the original cult classic endures to this day, and what it s like to continue its ahem legacy. Plus, the stars reveal who they d put on their own Goon Squad (Iglesias is a superhero fan, Cheadle wants cheaters) and Zendaya explains how similar the movie is to her own life growing up in a basketball family.Space Jam: A New Legacy is in theaters and available to stream on HBO Max on Friday, July 16, 2021. On an Apple device? 5.84.4 0月喜迎(Photo by Josh Ethan Johnson / © A24 / Courtesy Everett Collection)Many who saw Steven Yeun as the suave, stylish playboy Ben in Lee Chang-dong’s Burning were shocked not to see him among the Academy Award nominees for Best Supporting Actor in 2019. The Korean-born American actor, just a few years out from leaving his star-making turn as Glenn on The Walking Dead – the episode still crushes us to this day – had delivered the kind of charismatic, sinister, and layered performance that, had it not been in a foreign film, would have all but assured him a solid awards-season run. Yet, despite some serious campaigning from writers and industry folks who heralded his turn as the almost Ripley-esque figure, it was not to be.Burning was just one within a streak of exciting post-Walking Dead projects that have marked Yeun as one of the most interesting and unpredictable actors of his generation – and one of the Freshest. Since leaving the AMC series in 2016, he has popped up in Bong Joon-ho’s Okja and Boots Riley’s Sorry To Bother You, and he s played the lead in the ultra-violent action/horror/comedy Mayhem, all Certified Fresh; add to that some great TV voice work in acclaimed animated series Tuca Bertie and Wizards. And then there’s this year’s Minari, in which he plays an immigrant father chasing the American dream in the rural South – and dragging an unwitting family along with him – and which won top honors at last year’s Sundance Film Festival.Minari arrives in theaters with three Screen Actors Guild Nominations, including for two for Yeun for Lead Actor and as part of the ensemble, and a controversial Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, despite being a decidedly American production and story. (Pundits predict the Academy won’t be making another Burning-level oversight of his performance when Oscar nominations are eventually announced, either.) Yeun, of course, isn’t focused on the hype, but on the work, and what Minari’s success could mean for American audiences and American stories moving forward.Ahead of the movie’s release, Yeun sat for an extended chat with Rotten Tomatoes to talk about how he has charted his unique career path, playing Minari’s single-minded Jacob, and why he seeks collaborators who are like nobody else.Jacqueline Coley for Rotten Tomatoes: I really wanted first of all to congratulate you on the SAG nominations, both your individual one and the ensemble one, and again, the film s just getting so much great praise. I checked this morning – I didn t know until today – but you re on a five-film Certified Fresh hot streak. Steven Yeun: Really?Yeah. There must have been a lot of offers after The Walking Dead and you could have gone a lot of different directions, but looking at the films you did – everything from Okja and Mayhem to Sorry To Bother You and now Minari – those are specific choices. How did you decide to do those films, and why did you want to work with those filmmakers?Yeun: It s strange, because you re asking me now from a kind of a retrospective lens, and maybe I ve by this point kind of compiled a story to tell about what happened and how I made these choices, but in those moments, I don t know if I had agency like that. I probably did. I certainly said no to things that I felt were just other versions of things that I ve tried before. But I think a lot of it is, for me, I was really trying to find myself. I was really trying to find out who I was and kind of get to play in roles that allowed me the space to express the fullness of, not me per se, but of a character. As an Asian-American actor, prior to Walking Dead, if I had any opportunities at all, it was really mostly to service larger narratives or kind of be a plot point by which to weave the main character around. So I wanted to be the main character that gets to have the plot points to weave around. With Mayhem, I m so thankful to them for giving me my first chance at a leading role. It wasn t a big budget and we shot it in Serbia, but we had some really wonderful people with us. Samara s [Weaving, his co-star] incredible, Joe [Lynch, the director] is great. To flex that muscle was attractive to me.Steven Yeun in Burning. (Photo by © Well Go USA / courtesy Everett Collection)And, then Okja… who wouldn t work for director Bong? I m a huge fan. And so, him reaching out and giving that part to me was extraordinary – and painful, because K was very much something that I was at the time, just somebody straddling two worlds and being unable to service either one. And I think going through that experience – I wasn t necessarily super conscious of what I
(Photo by @ Twentieth Century Fox)With the 91st Academy Awards around the corner, we ve been wondering whether first-time nominees or veterans who’ve already won an Oscar – or been nominated – have a better chance of winning. With only four of the 20 nominated actors walking away with an Oscar on Sunday, we wanted to know how the five former winners, six prior nominees, and nine first-time nominees who make up the group of 20 will fair – according to Oscar trends. And so we dove into the data to see if there were any patterns suggesting that vets are favored over newcomers, and vice versa, and applied that to this year s nominees. To keep the data current, we decided to focus on recent nominees and winners, beginning with the 73rd Academy Awards in 2001. What we found could be crucial info when filling out your Oscar ballot.(We did go a little further, analyzing the four Academy Award acting categories going back to 1929 and discovered that 1,700 nominations have gone out to only 928 actors. Further, 364 Academy Awards have been won by just 298 actors. Multiple awards have been won by 41 actors, and 257 have only won once. That seems to tell us that, historically, the awards favor first-time winners and it’s more difficult to be a repeat winner with so much competition.)Here are some key takeaways about the 72 Acting Oscars awarded and the 360 nominations since the 73rd Academy Awards in 2001.36 Oscars have been won by actors who’d already won an Oscar or been nominated36 Oscars have been won by first-time nominees218 nominations have been given to prior winners or nominees142 nominations have been given to first-time nominees4 Actors have won multiple Oscars between 2001-2018: Cate Blanchett (2005, 2014), Sean Penn (2004, 2009), Daniel Day-Lewis (2008, 2013), Christoph Waltz (2010, 2013)5 Actors who won Oscars prior to 2001, won their second or third Oscars since 2001: Meryl Streep (1980, 1983, 2012), Denzel Washington (1990, 2002), Hilary Swank (2000, 2005), Frances McDormand (1997, 2018), Daniel Day-Lewis (1990, 2008, 2013)68 Actors have won OscarsSo what does this data tell us about who might win this year?Best Actress: Veteran Nominees – if not winners – Dominate(Photo by @ Warner Bros. )Nominees since 2001: 26 prior Oscars winners, 30 prior nominees (with no wins), and 34 first-time nominees.Winners since 2001: 4 Oscar winners, 8 prior nominees, and 6 first-time nominees.Nominated in 2019: 2 prior nominees (with no wins), and 3 first-time nominees.Glenn Close: The Wife – 6 prior nominations for The World According to Garp (1982), The Big Chill (1983), The Natural (1984), Fatal Attraction (1984), Dangerous Liaisons (1988), Albert Nobbs (2011)Melissa McCarthy: Can You Ever Forgive Me? – 1 prior nomination for Bridesmaids (2011)Lady Gaga: A Star is Born – No prior nominationsYalitza Aparicio: Roma – No prior nominationsOlivia Colman: The Favourite – No prior nominationsBased on recent trends, the advantage in this category goes to seven-time nominee Glenn Close (The Wife) and the twice-nominated Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?). Why? Seven of the last eight winning actresses had been nominated at least twice before winning, and prior nominees in the Best Actress category have the best chance to win (8 winners out of 30 nominations, or  26.6%) among the four acting categories. Also, no Oscar-winning actresses were nominated in 2019; in years when no Oscar winners were nominated (2003, 2008), the Oscar has gone to actresses with prior nominations.Another factor is that since 1927, only Shirley Booth (Come Back, Little Sheba), Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins), Barbra Streisand (Funny Girl), and Marlee Matlin (Children of a Lesser God) have won a Best Actress Oscar for their first starring roles. This hurts the odds of Lady Gaga (A Star is Born) and Yalitza Aparicio (Roma) winning because of their newcomer status.Who has the advantage? We’re guessing the seven-time nominated Glenn Close will follow in the footsteps of Julia Roberts, Helen Mirren, Kate Winslet, and Julianne Moore who had at least three nominations and zero wins when they picked up their Oscars.Best Actor: The Odds Are Split, But It Helps to Play a Real-Life Character(Photo by @ 20th Century Fox)Nominees since 2001: 24 prior Oscars winners, 34 prior nominees (with no wins), and 32 first-time nominees.Winners since 2001: 3 Oscar winners, 8 prior nominees, and 7 first-time nominees.Nominated in 2019: 1 Oscar Winner, 3 prior nominees (with no wins), and 1 first-time nominee.Christian Bale: Vice – 1 Oscar win for The Fighter (2011) and two nominations for American Hustle (2014), and The Big Short (2016)Bradley Cooper: A Star is Born – 3 prior nominations for Silver Linings Playbook (2013), American Hustle (2014), and American Sniper (2015)Willem Dafoe: At Eternity’s Gate – 3 prior nominations for Platoon (1987), Shadow of the Vampire (2001), and The Florida Project (2018)Viggo Mortensen: Green Book – 2 prior nominations for Eastern
3. Tyrion Says FarewellTyrion signs his own death warrant by letting Jaime go. At least the act gives us this touching moment between the two brothers. If it weren t for you, I never would have survived our childhood, Tyrion says. You were the only one who didn t treat me like a monster. You were all I had. They re crying, we re crying, you re crying 4. The Man Who Killed Jaime Lannister(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)In a moment so fleeting in its treatment of a major showdown that it argues (again) for at least one more episode in this too-brief final season, Euron miraculously swaggers out of Blackwater Bay at the same time Jaime arrives at the spot to sneak into the Red Keep through the exit that Tyrion told him about.Euron tells Jaime that he will be a legend if he kills a second king. Jaime: “You’re no king.” Euron has the title of king of the Iron Islands, so to a certain segment, he qualifies. Plus, he had sex with Cersei, so that makes him king of her boudoir – a petty king, by the tone of this absurd conversation.Naturally, stabbing ensues.“I got you,” Euron calls after Jaime, and with his dying breath: “I am the man who killed Jaime Lannister.”5. Cleganebowl(Photo by HBO)“You come with me, you die here,” The Hound says to Arya when they get inside the Red Keep, shooing her off. Uncharacteristically, Arya agrees, notably calling after “Sandor” to say thanks and then departs.Sandor meets his brother on the Red Keep stairwell. Cersei: “Stay with me!” Mountain eyes her. Qyburn: “Obey!” The Mountain throws Qyburn down the steps with such force that he instantly dies. (Qyburn was a brittle man.) Thus, the monster killed his maker.Cersei exits quickly and Cleganebowl is on!“Yeah, that’s you. That’s what you’ve always been,” Sandor says to Gregor after knocking his helmet off, then runs his sword through his Frankensteined brother, who removes the blade and comes at his bro.Much sword-swinging later – and a tumble down some stairs, slamming against walls, gouging of eyeballs, stabbing in the face – and The Hound realizes that skewering The Mountain just won’t end him, so he body-slams Gregor right through the wall into the fiery hellscape below. We’ve joked about Qyburn playing Doctor Frankenstein with Gregor as his monster, but the monster’s final words from Mary Shelley’s classic 1818 horror novel seem more fitting for Sandor than for Gregor:“I shall die, and what I now feel be no longer felt. Soon these burning miseries will be extinct. I shall ascend my funeral pile triumphantly and exult in the agony of the torturing flames. The light of that conflagration will fade away; my ashes will be swept into the sea by the winds. My spirit will sleep in peace, or if it thinks, it will not surely think thus. Farewell.”6. “I Want Our Baby to Live”(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Meanwhile, back in the map room, Jaime finds hysterical Cersei. We thought it was Arya sneaking up on Cersei or even wearing Jaime’s face, but no, it was a real moment between the twins.“I want our baby to live,” she cries as they find themselves trapped by the walls collapsing in around them.He calms her and embraces her: “Nothing else matters.” (Cue: Metallica.)The Red Keep becomes Jaime and Cersei’s crypt – supposedly. We’ll believe it when we see their crushed skulls.7. A Faceless Man Meets Her Match: Gravity(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)While Cleganebowl reaches its conclusion, Arya’s busy trying to save the city – or, at least, dodge the falling debris that may mean the end of her and the random people she’s tasked by the script with saving. (Unnecessary.) Finally, she wakes to an orgy of death save for one bright life standing before her.“The Bells,” apparently, traded the kingdom for a horse. What was your favorite moment of the episode? It’s been a long time since a Marvel Studios film debuted in theaters. Spider-Man: Far From Home opened on June 26, 2019 to a very different world, with Marvel planning to unveil the first of its Phase Four films the following May. Then the pandemic happened and Black Widow became one of the key markers determining whether or not release dates for big summer movies were viable across the next year and change. And after a number of false starts remember when it was supposed to open in November? Black Widow is in theaters this Friday.Yes, the film’s moment is finally here. But for busy consumers of media now taken with Fear Street, Cruel Summer, or even Marvel s own Loki television series, key details once fresh in their minds about Natasha Romanoff s (Scarlett Johansson) adventures may have been forgotten. Honestly, it is easy to lose track of an ongoing story two years later even in the best of times. Luckily, we’ve compiled the five things you should remember before heading to the theater – or drive-in, or your couch – to watch Marvel’s return to the movies. It Is Set Between Captain America: Civil War And Avengers: Infinity War(Photo by ©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)This one might seem obvious to those following the ongoing Marvel Cinematic Universe closely and waiting with bated breath for the arrival of Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors) in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. At the same time, though, there are those who might assume the film takes place in the relative present alongside WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, despite the fact that Natasha Romanoff is currently, well, unavailable, as it were. In fact, it is possible for members of either camp to so completely believe their assumptions about Black Widow that they are unaware anyone else thinks differently.Nonetheless, the film takes place a short time after Nat goes on the run following her choice to allow Captain America (Chris Evans) and Bucky (Sebastian Stan) to escape the Berlin airport in Captain America: Civil War. How much time has passed between the films is unclear, even as Marvel becomes more precise about when certain MCU events occurred. Using the film’s release date as a marker, Black Widow is set after May 6, 2016.Yes, Civil War was that long ago.On the other end, it can take place no later than April 27, 2018 – the date Avengers: Infinity War was released. Although, considering where Nat is when she first appears in that film, we’re inclined to believe Black Widow takes place in 2017. Splitting the difference between the films on either side of Black Widow seems to make the most sense. All this grousing about the film s setting along the Marvel timeline may seem like needless nitpicking, but it does matter, as it sets up Nat’s emotional arc. This is someone without her friends for the first time in a long time. And although Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) can be annoying, they are like family. Think about how quickly she bonded with Steve Rogers and you’ll see how the Nat we’re about to see in Black Widow could be, well, sad an unusual place for the character to start a journey.Natasha Was A Russian Spy(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)Of course, her training in the Red Room may allow her to keep those emotions in check. What we’ve seen of the Red Room – the ex-Soviet program dedicated to training children into spies – indicates it would force a rather extreme suppression of emotions to survive. Well, presuming her very brief admission of what occurred there in Avengers: Age of Ultron is anything to go by.But beyond the way the Red Room training might regulate her emotions, it is important to keep Nat’s status as a former Russian spy in mind because she is headed back into that world. It is a place of guns instead of lasers, bike chases instead of time heists, and darker ideas than even Thanos can imagine, though we doubt the film will delve far into the full terror of what it means to be a Black Widow. This is still a Disney picture, after all. Also, thanks to the trailers, we know part of her spy training was being part of a “family” consisting of Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Alexi Shostakov (David Harbour), and Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz). The nature of that family remains to be seen – could they all turn around and betray her? We expect resolving the nature of their bond (if one even exists), as opposed to the tale of how she defected to S.H.I.E.L.D., is a big reason for the film s setting. We ll Always Have Budapest (Photo by Zade Rosenthal/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)From the Black Widow trailers, we can see Natasha is headed back to Budapest as part of her reunion with Yelena. That city holds some special significance for Nat that, we assume, will become clearer as the film unfolds. Both she and Clint reference Budapest in The Avengers and Avengers: Endgame, although, as Nat pointed out in Avengers, Clint’s memory of the operation is very different. In fact, exposing the nature of what happened there is something Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford) tried to use against Nat in Captain America: The Winter Soldier when she prepares to expose all of Hydra’s secrets to the world.Clearly, something bad happened in the Hungarian capital while Nat and Clint both worked for S.H.I.E.L.D. Will it point to the agency’s return in subsequent Marvel movies or shows? We doubt it. If we get any additional clarity on the operation, it will be squarely focused on Natasha Romanoff. For one thing, this is her movie, not a S.H.I.E.L.D. flick. And for another, if this really is Johansson’s final turn as Black Widow, this is the absolute last chance to explain Budapest to all the Marvel fans who’ve tracked the reference across the last decade.Marvel Means Big Action (In Theaters Anyway)(Photo by ©Marvel Studios)Although the three Marvel Studios TV shows on Disney+ have been impressive in their own ways, they tend to avoid the spectacle of a Captain America: Civil War or an Iron Man 3. Instead, the shows go for more contained fights without as many explosions or car chases. Some of them can be quite thrilling, but still pale in comparison to, say, Nick Fury s (Samuel L. Jackson) attempts to evade Hydra in The Winter Soldier. From the reviews we’ve seen of Black Widow, it seems that sort of explosive action is back in a big way. And, to be fair to the TV shows, which still pulled off some great things, explosions and car chases belong to movies more than television. They have the time and budget to pull those things off more effectively. Well, at least for now, anyway.Meanwhile, we imagine if you’ve spent the last 18 months at home, the spectacle of Black Widow may be jarring. Of course, it is also possible you’ve already seen F9 and you re ready for more explosions, cars getting crushed, and the like. Nevertheless, there are some who may be startled by the level of action in this film and, if they brave the theaters, the volume of the elaborate speaker systems. It is something even avid moviegoers need to adjust to after so long a time without theatrical releases, and this is to say nothing of just being inside a theater again if Black Widow is your  first return to the movies since March of 2020. That could be a shock all its own before the film even starts.Leviathan May Resurface(Photo by Patrick Wymore/©ABC)This might be a long shot, but as we were avid Agent Carter fans, we’re never going to let this one go. The short lived Hayley Atwell series introduced a character known as Dottie Underwood (Bridget Regan). Although never outright called a Black Widow, she was trained at the Red Room Academy in Belarus in manner quite similar to the instruction Natasha would receive decades later. Initially ordered to aid in obtaining secret Stark technology, she came into contact with Peggy Carter (Atwell) and the Strategic Scientific Reserve the forerunner agency to S.H.I.E.L.D.In a curious twist, Dottie’s orders came not from Hydra, but from Leviathan, a Soviet program devoted to both scientific research and espionage. Behaving in a similar manner to Hydra – with a side order of secret society shenanigans – Leviathan seemed poised to become Peggy s main adversary in Season 3 before ABC sadly cancelled the series. But considering Endgame’s acknowledgment of the program via star James D’Arcy’s cameo as Edwin Jarvis, there is room for Black Widow to offer us some clarity on the matter, if even just to say the Red Room continued Leviathan s objectives following the fall of the Soviet Union.Again, we admit Leviathan is the least likely thing you need to remember before seeing Black Widow, but it is always possible Marvel Studios will put it into play as it fleshes out more of Nat’s past. Also, like the Red Room itself, it could still be operational in 2017, to say nothing of Phase Four’s present day.Black Widow opens in theaters and streams on Disney+ with Premier Access on July 9, 2021.On an Apple device?
