(Photo by Focus Features)Yes, we know what you’re thinking: Just days after one of the most drama-filled awards seasons in recent memory, we are already looking ahead to next year. Best Picture winner Parasite is still in theaters, and we are several months away from the unofficial kick-off of the awards season in September. Still, we are already eyeing a list of hopefuls we think can go the distance in 2021. With Cannes re-emerging as a launching pad for contender films (Oscar winners Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and Parasite both premiered at Cannes last year, where the latter won the Palme d Or), the “Oscar movie” starting line continues to shift to earlier and earlier in the year. And following huge wins for genre-defying, foreign-language underdog-turned-Best Picture-winner Parasite, the very notion of an awards movie is ever-changing.After a fresh crop of films that premiered at Sundance in January, a number of new trailers from movies likely to be in the Oscar conversation, and festival circuit stops announced by others, we are starting to get excited. Read on to see our picks for Oscar contenders in 2020/2021 and why we are betting on them early.Don’t agree with our picks? Have at us in the comments.Mank (2020) 83% Cast: Gary Oldman, Amanda Seyfried, Charles Dance, Lily CollinsWhat it is:  A biopic about Herman J. Mankiewicz, the co-screenwriter of Citizen Kane, and his battles with co-writer Orson Welles. Why it could win: Director David Fincher has earned at least one Oscar nomination for each of his last four pictures, including the two-time Academy Award winner The Social Network. Following the success of his Netflix show Mindhunter and earlier films like Zodiac, many voters and critics are excited to see what Fincher   the new master of the historical thriller   has in store for this Hollywood tale of betrayal, inspiration, and intrigue.Promising Young Woman (2020) 90%Cast: Carey Mulligan, Bo Burnham, Alison Brie, Connie Britton, Adam Brody, Jennifer CoolidgeWhat it is: A revenge thriller/dark comedy about a young woman who moonlights as a vigilante, feigning helpless drunkenness at bars to bring justice to would-be sexual predators, until she meets an old classmate who helps her shift focus and confront her past. Why it could win: Carey Mulligan has been consistently serving award-worthy performances for the past few years (Wildlife, Suffragette, Mudbound). After a successful nomination campaign for Cynthia Erivo in Harriet, we are betting Focus Features has a plan to get the previously nominated Mulligan back in contention. Writer-director Emerald Fennell is also a threat for a screenplay award following her Emmy-nominated success with TV series Killing Eve.The White Tiger (2021) 91%Cast: Rajkummar Rao, Priyanka ChopraWhat it is: A man s rags to riches tale of self-determination comes to life in this adaptation of the Man Booker Prize-winning novel from India. Why it could win: Aravind Adiga s 2008 novel The White Tiger was an international bestseller, and director Ramin Bahrani has been a darling on the festival circuit since his breakout with 99 Holmes. With the addition of Priyanka Chopra in her first English-language lead role in a feature film, we are motivated to keep our eye on this one for end-of-year accolades.Nomadland (2020) 93%(Photo by Searchlight Pictures)Cast: Frances McDormand, David StrathairnWhat it is: A woman in her sixties loses everything and takes off on an exploration of the West, living in her van as a modern-day nomad. Why it could win: After the critical success of The Rider, we automatically signed up for anything Chloe Zhao wanted to do next. Before she set off to shoot Eternals for Marvel, Zhao filmed Nomadland, starring two-time Best Actress Oscar-winner Francis McDormand, who also shows up elsewhere on this list. We are similarly excited for what McDormand will do, and #Vanlife seems ripe for actorly drama.Dune (2021) 89% Cast: Dave Bautista, Javier Bardem, Rebecca Ferguson, Timothée ChalametWhat it is: An epic sci-fi adventure that chronicles the lives of the royal Atreides family as they strive to protect the most valuable resource in the universe. Why it could win: Dune has been at the top of just about every most anticipated film list since it was announced in late 2017. It may be a stretch as an awards contender, but the fact that Denis Villeneuve is one of the few directors capable of producing pure genre films that still appeal to Academy voters does work in his favor. Add the internet s boyfriend and voter favorite Timothée Chalamet, and it would not shock us if it became a serious contender for above- and below-the-line honors. The Forty-Year-Old Version (2020) 98% (Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Film Festival)Cast: Radha Blank, Peter Y. KimWhat it is: An aging playwright battling with the choice to stay broke or sell out turns to rapping about her life as a 40-year-old as a way to reclaim her identity. Why it could win: Radha Blank was a well established playwright within the theater community when she made her stunning debut at Sundance earlier this year. The film, which delighted critics, was quickly snapped up by Netflix. It s a no-brainer to compete for Best Original Screenplay, so we fully expect a fall roll-out and a heavy awards push from the streaming giant.Benedetta (2021) 85%Cast: Charlotte Rampling, Virginie Efira, Lambert WilsonWhat it is: A 17th-century nun beset by erotic visions forms a relationship with her caregiver, and the two women become engulfed in a passionate love affair. Why it could win: Paul Verhoeven, the director of Elle, is making an erotic lesbian nun love story based on a true story. Need we say more? If, by chance, you think this premise is too much for Academy Voters, we would remind you that Isabelle Huppert was nominated for Oscar and won a Golden Globe for Elle  a dark rape/revenge love story.Respect (2021) 68% Cast: Jennifer Hudson, Audra McDonald, Forest Whitaker, Tituss Burgess, Marc Maron, Marlon WayansWhat it is: A biopic profiling legendary singer-songwriter Aretha Franklin. Why it could win: Musical biopics have worked out rather well, particularly recently, for people like Renee Zellweger and Rami Malek, as well as past Oscar winners like Jamie Foxx, Reese Witherspoon, Barbra Streisand, and Sissy Spacek, so it could do the same for Jennifer Hudson as Aretha Franklin in Respect. Hudson had previously sung her way to an Oscar in 2007 s Dreamgirls, so the long-awaited feature about the Queen of Soul has promise, and thankfully, we expect it won t need much CGI like her last musical offering, Cats. The Eyes of Tammy Faye (2021) 66%Cast: Jessica Chastain, Vincent D Onofrio, Andrew GarfieldWhat it is: A drama charting the rise and fall of televangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, particularly through the lens of the latter. The film is a narrative adaptation of the 2000 documentary of the same name. Why it could win: Televangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker were reality stars before the Kardashians, and they came with more baggage. They were two of the richest, most popular personalities on television at the height of their success, and their fall from grace was tabloid fodder for decades and tailor-made for awards consideration. Throw in two-time Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain and Best Actor nominee Andrew Garfield, as well as director Michael Showalter, who directed the Oscar-nominated The Big Sick, and there s plenty of reason to think this will resonate with the Academy. In the Heights (2021) 94% Cast: Anthony Ramos, Corey Hawkins, Jimmy Smits, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Stephanie Beatriz, Marc Anthony, Dascha PolancoWhat it is: The big-screen adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda s Tony-winning Broadway musical about life in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, New York. Why it could win: The fact that the original musical won a Tony is reason enough to get excited about In the Heights, but with the addition of Crazy Rich Asians director Jon M. Chu, we have had a hard time picturing anything topping one of the new songs from this film for Best Original Song in 2020. The colorful visuals and production design we spied in the trailer also had us instantly buzzing.Hillbilly Elegy (2020) 25%Cast: Amy Adams, Glenn Close, Haley Bennett, Freida PintoWhat it is: The film adaptation of J. D. Vance s acclaimed memoir chronicling three generations of his Appalachian family. Why it could win: He has not been in the Awards conversation for over a decade, but double Oscar winner Ron Howard is always a threat, and Netflix is betting big on the memoir s long-awaited adaptation. With the inclusion of two actresses (Amy Adams and Glenn Close) who have 13 Oscar nominations but zero wins between them, there will be a lot of eyes on Hillbilly Elegy come fall.Tenet (2020) 70%Cast: John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth DebickiWhat it is: A mindbending sci-fi tale about time travel and a race to save the world. Why it could win: Christopher Nolan behind the camera alone should be enough for anyone, but Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, and John David Washington make Tenet a must-see, albeit a risky bet, for nominations morning, as Tenet might be too genre to capture Oscar voters attention. Still, Nolan earned nominations for Inception and Memento, so his latest, which looks like a cross between the two, is difficult not to picture on the Oscar stage.Greyhound (2020) 79%Cast: Tom Hanks, Elisabeth Shue, Rob Morgan, Karl GlusmanWhat it is: In WWII, 37 Allied ships cross the treacherous North Atlantic while hotly pursued by a fleet of Nazi U-boats during the lead captain s first command. Why it could win: It s hard to bet against a Tom Hanks war movie. After Hanks broke a nearly 20-year Oscar nomination drought with his Best Supporting Actor nom for A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, we like his chances for this based-on-true-events story, which he both wrote and leads on screen. The French Dispatch (2021) 80% Cast: Benicio Del Toro, Adrien Brody, Tilda Swinton, Timothée Chalamet, Frances McDormand, Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Saoirse Ronan, Léa SeydouxWhat it is: A film anthology of the stories from the final issue of an American magazine published in a fictionalized version of 20th century France. Why it could win: Wes Anderson has been nominated for seven Academy Awards and has never won not even for the beloved The Grand Budapest Hotel, which seems a downright tragedy. However, with this cast of Oscar winners and an expected glitzy debut on the festival circuit later this year, The French Dispatch is an early favorite to lead all nominations next January.Passing (2021) 86%Cast: Alexander Skarsgård, Tessa Thompson, Ruth NeggaWhat it is: Two white-presenting Black women are forced to confront their own choices, and each other, after they reunite to learn one is living as a white woman and the other as Black. Why it could win: Based on Nella Larson s award-winning novel, the premise alone has critics and film fans intrigued. Written and helmed by Rebecca Hall (an actress who s a magnet for stellar scripts built for powerhouse performances), we are anticipating a story that gives stars Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga plenty of material for an awards highlight reel.Minari (2020) 98% (Photo by A24 films)Cast: Steven Yeun, Han Yeri, Youn Yuh-JungWhat it is: A family drama seen through the eyes of a seven-year-old Korean-American boy whose father moves the family from California to rural Arkansas to learn to farm and make a better life. Why it could win: A24 s Minari left Sundance riding high on praise from critics and, as of today, it s still Fresh at 100%. A quiet story about an Asian-American family with an eccentric grandmother is what earned Lulu Wang s The Farewell the top prize at the Independent Spirit Awards this year, even if it didn t break through with Oscar voters. Starring indie darling Steven Yeun in the lead role, Minari could succeed where The Farewell and Yeun s previous awards contender Burning fell short.Thumnail images by Warner Bros. He turns into a plant. When you do a science experiment in class and you put the light to the right and you put the plant upside down and you see how the plant always grows to the sunlight. Tony is like that: he s drawn into this mobster lifestyle. Something that he doesn t want to be a part of, but he s forced into it. And he s trapped in this mobster box of feeling like he has to grow up to be this big, scary guy when really deep down he wants to do the right thing.Rotten Tomatoes: As well as working with Michael, you also worked with some pretty legendary actors. You spoke about Ray. Alessandro s also incredible in this film.Ludwig: Alessandro s so good. He s an amazing actor. The first time I was on set was the funeral scene. When I walked in, Alessandro was sitting down in this chair in the front row and he was just looking down. He captured how his character feels and he just portrayed that throughout the whole day. But when I walked up to him, when I saw him for the first time in person, he snaps out of it so fast and he goes, Hey, Michael, how are you? It s so good to see you. And we chatted for a little bit. And then I go to my spot and he sits right back down, goes back down and starts brooding again. It was really amazing to watch him do that.Rotten Tomatoes: And what about working with Vera Farmiga and establishing that mother-son relationship?Ludwig: Well, Vera is such a sweet lady. She s like a mother, really. Mattea Conforti, who plays young Janice, we taught Vera how to hit the whoa in 2019. If you can remember what the whoa is? [Author’s note: I did not, but William demonstrated.] We taught Vera Farmiga how to hit the whoa! And she told us the story about how Millie Bobby Brown taught her how to do the whip/nae nae.Rotten Tomatoes: And finally, did you get to eat any of the baked ziti on the set?Ludwig: Well, the confirmation scene with young Janice, I was shoveling penne pasta down my throat for eight hours. So I had probably the worst stomach ache I ve ever experienced in my whole life.Rotten Tomatoes: Because there s no tricks for that when the camera s on, right? You ve just go to eat and eat and eat.Ludwig: Hey, we didn t have to pay for any of it.The Many Saints of Newark is in theaters and available on HBO Max from Friday October 1, 2021.On an Apple device? 4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
The 2010s were an exciting time for comic book–based television shows. The decade began with Smallville demonstrating a superhero show could be done on a budget, pull off the occasional iconic comic book moment, and sustain an audience for ten seasons. Almost immediately after it left the air in 2012, a whole second generation emerged to prove you can be faithful to the source material and still strike out in new directions. Soon, we had a whole superhero multiverse dominating one network’s lineup, a S.H.I.E.L.D. television show offering a weekly dose of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and even a few shows proving comics can offer television prestige-caliber material.Of course, as we reflect on the decade past, only a handful of shows — or seasons of shows — can truly prove to be exemplary of the types of stories comics pioneered and still make for great TV. Some shows stand above the rest in terms of consistent quality, while others deserve recognition for the key time they got it right or advanced their genres on television. These 10 shows reveal just how wide in scope and far in storytelling we’ve come since Smallville started the 21st century’s comics on TV revolution.Watchmen: Season 1 (2019) 96%With only one season under its cape, Watchmen did two impossible things: 1.) It adapted the classic comic book by Alan Moore, Dave Gibbon, and John Higgins into something wildly different, yet wholly consistent as the source. 2.) It got AT T to pay for a long-form treatise on American racism. And even if that topic had not become relevant in the last few years, Watchmen would still feel worthy for using this specific comic book to talk about these issues. Considering how much the source embeds itself in American history, taking this angle feels like mining the original comics’ great missing chapter. Meanwhile, the show features some powerhouse acting talent with Regina King, Louis Gossett Jr, Jean Smart, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Tim Blake Nelson delivering better and better performances each week. Though the most recent entry on the list, it’s certainly earned its place.Legion 91%Though it wavered in the second season, Legion proved one can take the basic concepts behind the X-Men and make a provocative, meaty, and artistically diverse program. With its dance sequences, rap battles, and genre-bending episodes, creator Noah Hawley put his directors in the driver’s seat as they found unique ways to further the tale of Charles Xavier’s son David (Dan Stevens) and his cohort of would-be saviors. And in the end, it left us feeling as though we watched the most compelling X-Men prequel ever devised. Well, a prequel if you consider the future they showed Xavier (played by Harry Lloyd in the third season) was prevented by him founding the X-Men.Arrow: Season 2 (2013) 95% (Photo by The CW)We’ll be honest, Arrow’s quality wavers in the extreme, but its second season was a standout in terms of achievement and intent. Intended to be a season-long tale called “City of Heroes,” the show expanded its universe with the arrival of Sarah Lance (Caity Lotz), the return of Slade Wilson (Manu Bennett), and the debut appearance of Barry Allen (Grant Gustin). It was also the year its flashbacks to Lian Yu felt the most resonant. In that story, we see what turned Slade from Oliver’s (Stephen Amell) best ally into his worst enemy just as the present day story carefully built up Slade’s plan for revenge. The show would try to mine that idea the next few seasons, but the device never works as well again as it did here. Also, this season set the standard for all the Arrowverse shows to follow.Marvel's Daredevil: Season 3 (2018) 97% In its final run on Netflix, Daredevil finally found the tone it needed all along: a tense legal thriller in which the plucky lawyer just happens to be a vigilante who fights people on rooftops. Very loosely based on the classic “Born Again” comic book story line, the third season played to all of the show’s strengths by pitting Matt Murdoch (Charlie Cox) against Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) once again and pairing down all of the characters to their essentials. This technique even extended to its one major introduction: Wilson Bethel as a not-yet-Bullseye whose usually ambiguous origin becomes definitive and downright compelling. And though we previously said the series felt complete with season 3, we would have loved to see this take on Daredevil continue.Marvel's Jessica Jones: Season 1 (2015) 94%(Photo by Myles Aronowitz/Netflix)Taking its cues from the early issues of Marvel’s Alias comic book and the later Purple story line, Jessica Jones first season continues to be the most satisfying of its three-year lifespan because it is directly about something: surviving rape. Thanks to the stellar performance of Krysten Ritter as Jessica and, of course, David Tennant as Killgrave the program used superhero trappings to talk about astonishing mental anguish and what people do to cope. Consider the way Jessica avoids any sort of support while Malcom (Eka Darville) almost immediately forms a support group for Killgrave’s victims. Sure, Jessica’s ultimate answer is violent, but it is cathartic. The story also gave the series a focus it would never have again even as it continued to produce quality work.Swamp Thing: Season 1 (2019) 92%Swamp Thing was not just true to its comic book roots, it was true to a whole genre of comics DC’s horror titles of the mid-1980s and early ’90s. Moody, gothic, and as often about relationships as existential terror, they were the post-Punk books DC needed to produce. And as a short-lived DC Universe original series, Swamp Thing captured this feeling in episodes like “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” in which an old evil in the swamp returns, passing from person to person as it tries to create more death and despair. The story feels like a single issue of Hellblazer or Swamp Thing while also serving the program’s ongoing plots. The series also served up the production values Swamp Thing always deserved. Sadly, that dedication to quality and fidelity meant the series enjoyed an all-too-brief life. The Walking Dead: Season 8 (2017) 65%While the series made a number of strides since Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) woke up in that hospital — and some wavering moments in quality — season 8 and its “All Out War” story line may be the best run of the series to date. It is the last time the core characters were unified, both physically and in purpose. Say what you like about Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), but he brings people together — even if the vast majority of them united just to bring him down. And there is that magic moment when Negan met Shiva. The season also gave Rick the win he so badly needed, even if it cost him his son Carl (Chandler Riggs). For a show loathed to traffic in happy endings, this was Rick’s chance at a vanquishing a foe and the closest it could come to letting its protagonist have anything remotely “happy.”DC's Legends of Tomorrow: Season 3 (2017) 88%(Photo by The CW)Proving superheroes can be wildly funny while still saving the universe, Legends fully shed the dour trappings of its first season with this inventive and off-beat year. The initial story saw the Legends fixing time after nearly tearing it asunder the previous year. But their efforts to patch the timestream also let a literal demon into their world. John Constantine (Matt Ryan) made a few appearances to help with the magical angle while Zari Tomas (Tala Ashe) arrived to abuse her snack privileges aboard the Waverider and call out the team for their constant failures as heroes although she proves equally disposed to goofing off in the end. Also, the season gave us Beebo, and how can we resist its strange must-have-Christmas-gift power?Wynonna Earp 92%(Photo by Michelle Faye/Wynonna Earp Season 2, Inc./Syfy)Born of a somewhat obscure 1990s Image Comics title, Wynonna Earp fills a niche so under-represented that its dedicated fanbase is now as much a part of the story as the chronicles of the title character. Returning to her hometown, Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) discovers her legacy has a supernatural element and that her family is nothing like what she believed it to be. Playing loose, fast, and funny with language, mythology, and the heart, the show never shies away from its influences or weaving tension into its comedy. And as its cast grew and the world-building deepened, it did for horror tropes what DC s Legends of Tomorrow does for the DC Comics milieu. The result is a seemingly light show with the power to de

(Photo by Francois Duhamel/Columbia Pictures)Daniel Craig famously said he d rather resort to self-harm than take on another James Bond project after he completed production on 2015 s Spectre, but somebody somewhere managed to convince him to do one more, and now we have No Time to Die. This one, though, this one is really the last time he ll step into 007 s bespoke suit that s what pretty much everyone assumes, anyway. As a result, the same conversations that popped up post-Spectre about who might replace Craig in the role have resurfaced, if they ever truly went away in earnest. With that in mind, as James Bond prepares to take on his 25th assignment, we here at RT have put together a list of 25 potential candidates who could step into the role after No Time to Die, and we want to know who you think is the best fit. With all the various discussions about the possibility of passing the torch to a non-white actor or a woman, we decided to cast our net wide and offer up a wide variety of choices, from dapper gentlemen and leading ladies to brooding brawlers and even a few outside-the-box options. So cast your vote below and let us know who you think should be the next James Bond!Note: You can vote for as many of the candidates below as you want, but you ll only be able to vote for them once.

reenlit the big-screen adaptation of Downton Abbey may be getting a nice bonus for the holiday. Brad Pitt and John Rambo were no match for the Crawley family this weekend, as Downton defied expectations and topped the box office with a cool million. The hit movie also grossed more this weekend than 109 of the Focus’s 133 releases grossed total since the company debuted with Billy Elliot back in 2000.King of the Crop: Downton Abbey Lords It Over the Competition, Sets Sights on 0 MillionJoel MearesThe numbers for Downton Abbey are pretty staggering. Tracking services had it lowballed to - million at first (only to later balloon up to around double that) but it seems its fanbase was loyal enough to show up and pay for something they got free from 2010-15. Focus really pulled something special off here. The studio has certainly put out a number of critically-acclaimed films over the years, including Atonement, Lost in Translation, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – and Downton is no exception, Certified Fresh at 85% on the Tomatometer – but their highest opening weekend until now was Insidious: Chapter 3, which grossed .6 million in 2015.Downton Abbey has already eclipsed that and now has its eye on Focus’s all-time grosser. Worldwide, that title belongs to the Gerard Butler sequel, London Has Fallen, which made over 5 million, but domestically it is the Oscar-winning Brokeback Mountain, grossing million. The only big-screen adaptations to start with over million and not reach that number are the comedies Bruno (.05 million) and The Dukes of Hazzard (.27 million) and if that is possible, could 0 million possibly be on the table too? For perspective, Hustlers opened to a similar .1 million last week and dipped 49% to million for a total of million after 10 days. That puts it roughly a million dollars ahead of the 2016 Magnificent Seven remake, which topped out at .4 million. Will Downton Abbey be frontloaded or do adults finally have a nice PG-rated film they can recommend to their friends? The Top 10 and Beyond: Ad Astra Made A Smart Move, Rambo Takes One Last (?) Go at Box Office Glory(Photo by 20th Century Fox)Industry watchers had one thing right about this week’s box office race: it was a crowded top five. Coming up with a narrow victory for second place was James Gray’s Ad Astra. Originally slated for a May release with nary a first trailer out there yet in April, Fox smartly moved it to a September slot. That likely made them a few more bucks as nearly everything was being swallowed up that month by Avengers: Endgame, though they were probably hoping for an opening in the million region. A .2 million start is in the middle of Pitt’s headliners and while critics are supporting the film (it s Certified Fresh at 83%), audiences may find its introspective approach to sci-fi challenging. We’ll set the first estimate for the film between million and million, which means the international audience will have to chip in to cover the reported  million budget. The film has grossed an additional million outside North America. From one film challenging the notion of the alpha male to one that s the embodiment of it, Rambo: Last Blood in all its 78-minute glory (sans credits) hit theaters as well. (The film runs longer in international markets thanks to an opening prologue cut from American audiences.) If we consider inflation to chart the course of the series: First Blood back in 1982 would have opened to .6 million and go on to gross 5.5 million; things exploded in 1985 when Rambo: First Blood Part II opened with the equivalent of a .1 million first weekend and earned a 8 million final haul; Rambo III in 1988 would have started with .2 million in today’s dollars and finish with 6.4 million. Thirty years later, Rambo would equate to a .6 million start and a .9 million finish. Now in 2019, Last Blood has started with million and is likely to drop off with the same expediency as the fourth entry, which may get the film to between million and million.(Photo by Brooke Palmer/© 2019 WARNER BROS. ENTERTAINMENT INC.)In a strange coincidence – they re both movies about malevolent creatures terrorizing children – It: Chapter Two is right behind last year’s big-screen animated version of The Grinch after 17 days of release. With 9.17 million after a .25 million third weekend, the movie is more on par with Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds and Solo: A Star Wars Story than any of the animated and family films with a similar tally. We are dropping its final estimate slightly from last week down to 0-5 million; the film has grossed over 2 million worldwide to date. In milestones this weekend, Hobbs Shaw crossed the 0 million mark and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood passed 0 million on the international market, bringing its worldwide total to 4 million. Finally, Amazon keeps trying but has not been able to get Brittany Runs a Marathon into the top 10, where it can get some further headlines. The film finished 12th this weekend in 1,033 theaters, grossing .5 million for a total of million, the studio’s third-highest domestic grosser to date. On the plus side, that is more than Warner Bros.’ The Goldfinch, which fell 71% this weekend and has made just .5 million to date. This Time Last Year: Audiences Chose PG Chills Over Political Thrills(Photo by © Universal Pictures)As The Nun was passing the 0 million mark, Eli Roth’s PG-rated children’s film, The House with a Clock In Its Walls, opened at number 1 with .6 million, while Michael Moore’s documentary about Donald Trump, Fahrenheit 11/9, was roundly ignored and opened in eighth place with just million. That is still better than two of the lowest per-theater-averages of the year that did not even make the top 10: Amazon’s Life Itself, which made just .12 million in 2,609 theaters for a 4 PTA and Neon’s Assassination Nation, which made .05 million in 1,403 theaters for a 8 PTA. The top 10 films grossed a total of .31 million and averaged 63.9% on the Tomatometer; this weekend’s top 10 grossed an estimated 3.91 million, which is good enough for the third-best September weekend ever for the top 10 films. The Tomatometer had a nearly identical average with 63.8%.

(Photo by Pixar / courtesy Everett Collection)All Pixar Movies Ranked By TomatometerWhen Disney distributed Pixar s Toy Story as an autumn alternative to traditional 2D animated features in 1995, could the studio have predicted that it would instead set the gold standard and template for theatrical cartoons for decades to come? After all, the slide from peak Disney Renaissance had only just begun (their releases that year were Pocahontas and A Goofy Movie) and Pixar was up to that point a studio that only made commercials and shorts; a feature-length 3D animated movie was a miracle in of itself, and they were not equipped to churn out quality yearly releases like Walt Disney Animation.Pixar s follow-up took three years to hit theaters, and though A Bug s Life is looked back on in the canon as a minor Pixar effort, everyone in 1998 rushed out to see it, and it again ended up grossing more than Disney s then recent works like Hercules and Mulan. 1999 s Toy Story 2 was a cultural event, and established Pixar as the one to take animation to the highest heights in the new century. What followed was a then-unprecedented run of Certified Fresh hits and box office smashes, from Monsters, Inc. and Finding Nemo to The Incredibles, WALL-E, and Up.2011 s Cars 2 broke the streak with Pixar s first Rotten film, and the studio has since spent the past decade oscillating between returning to the sequel well (Monsters University, Finding Dory) and pulling up original property (Coco, Inside Out), closing out with Toy Story 4. For 2020, Onward was pulled from theaters after two due to the pandemic, while Soul went straight to Disney+ in hopes of salvaging a year of chaos. Now, let s take a long look at the past 25 years, ranking all Pixar movies by Tomatometer!MORE DISNEY: All Disney+ Shows and Original Movies Ranked | The 100 Best Movies on Disney+ | All Disney Animated Movies Ranked | All Star Wars Movies Ranked | All MCU Movies Ranked

Ghcxuf SURPRISE: Joker Comes out on Top with 11 Nominations(Photo by Niko Tavernise/© 2019 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. All Rights Reserved. TM & © DC Comics)We all knew it was going to be a good morning for Joker, with noms for Best Actor and Best Picture guaranteed, but few thought it was going to be this good. The movie won the day with 11 nominations, more than any other film, including Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, Sam Mendes’ 1917, and Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, which each picked up 10. Where Joker really made up its numbers was in earning nods in a number of categories where it was considered an outside chance rather than a lock: Best Production Design, Best Film Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, and Best Director for Todd Phillips.SNUB: Jennifer Lopez and The Farewell s Shuzhen Zhao Miss Out(Photo by JA, Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Be kind to J-Lo fans today, who may require the comforting warmth of a luxury fur coat after the multi-hyphenate was left off the Best Supporting Actress list – maybe the biggest single snub of this year’s Oscar nominations. Lopez was widely favored in the category for her performance as exotic dancer Ramona in Hustlers, with many pegging her as the likely winner come February. She had racked up wins all season and was mounting a killer campaign. The category was generally one of the most surprising, with The Farewell actress Shuzhen Zhao, who won hearts as Nai Nai in Lulu Wang’s The Farewell, also snubbed, and Kathy Bates and Florence Pugh, considered slight dark horses, managing to squeeze in.SURPRISE: Kathy Bates Shakes Up the Supporting Actress Noms(Photo by Claire Folger/©Warner Bros.)J-Lo’s loss is Kathy Bates’ gain. (There’s a sentence we never thought we’d be writing.) But the huge snub of Jennifer Lopez in the Best Supporting Actress race opened up the door for an outside contender, and Kathy Bates – whose performance as the title character’s mom in Richard Jewell has been widely lauded by critics – beat out other hopefuls Annette Bening (The Report), Da’Vine Joy Randolph (Dolemite Is My Name), and the ladies of Parasite to take her place in the field. Interesting side note: Kathy Bates won Best Actress in 1991 and the next year handed Best Actor to Anthony Hopkins – both winning for playing different kinds of psychopaths. Could they both take out Supporting Actor this year, for very different roles?SNUB: Put Your Bets on Adam Sandler? You Just Lost Big.(Photo by A24)With Uncut Gems racing to become A24’s biggest box officer earner ever, and Adam Sandler racking up critics groups awards over the last month, you might have thought he was looking good for his first-ever Oscar nomination. Alas, it was not to be for the Sandman, with The Two Popes Jonathan Pryce taking what was con 😈😈

The year was 1999. The summer movie season was about to kick off with one of the most anticipated films of all time. This would be the year that would see the return of the greatest franchise in cinema histo Book Club (which scored 54% and opened to .5 million) look pretty dashed. It is the second week in a row that STX failed to get a million start (including last week’s UglyDolls.)The studio picked up Poms through auction at the American Film Market last November for between million and million, and it opened this weekend to .1 million.Lionsgate’s Long Shot, meanwhile, dropped 37% in its second weekend. While word of mouth has caught up to the film a little, the drop was still to big to beat The Intruder in its second week.Fox Searchlight has opened a film in more than 1,000 theaters just 28 times in its 183-film history. The 29th time came this weekend with Tolkien. While there was enough curiosity to earn it .1 million in 1,496 theaters this weekend, the biopic’s per-screen-average of ,440 currently makes it the second-worst per-theater average among those 29 films. If the estimates hold, that is. If the number actually drops, it could fall behind the ,383 PTA that Miss March had in 2009 and become the worst. Between Tolkien (49%) and The Aftermath (27%), Fox Searchlight has released its two lowest-scored films since 2017’s back-to-back releases of Table 19 (26%) and Wilson (48%).The Top Ten And Beyond: New Releases Nothing To Pikachu About(Photo by Warner Bros.)Back in March, expectations for Pokemon Detective Pikachu were set for a million weekend and, in some circles, a 0 million domestic haul. The high predictions came back down to Earth a bit recently as WB lowballed a million start for its live-action Pokemon film. Audiences split the difference this weekend and handed over million, which is a little more than what The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian opened to. A Dog’s Journey may take a small nibble out of its staying power next week and Aladdin an even larger bite the week after. Critics have marginally put it in Fresh territory with a 63% score and a first estimate of 0-170 million for Pikachu means WB will be counting on international fans to cover its 0 million budget. The film has grossed an additional 2.4 million overseas so far. Also opening this weekend was the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels remake The Hustle, starring Anne Hathaway and Rebel Wilson. It opened to a bit less (.5 million) than Wilson’s February comedy, Isn’t It Romantic?, which started with .2 million even with a two-day head start. At 16%, The Hustle is one of the worst-reviewed films of the year, lower than the score for Hathaway’s other delayed 2019 release, Serenity (19%).This Time Last Year: Infinity War Was Also On Its Third Straight Week At The Top(Photo by Marvel Studios)A year ago, Avengers: Infinity War led the way for a third straight week with the fourth-best third weekend in history ( million.) Its two new challengers that weekend, Life of the Party with Melissa McCarthy and home invasion thriller Breaking In, duked it out for second and third with .88 and .63 million, respectively. The documentary RBG also made its way into tenth place in its second weekend with .18 million in 179 theaters. The top ten films grossed a total of 6.69 million and averaged 63.2% on the Tomatometer. This year’s top ten grossed an estimated 2.77 million and averaged 53.4%.On the Vine: John Wick Battles A Dog In Attempt To Take Down The Avengers(Photo by Summit Entertainment)Keanu Reeves returns to potentially close out a trilogy in John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum. After the disappointing returns of Long Shot, Lionsgate could use a non-Tyler Perry victory. Will this be the one to finally make it to 0 million? Will its fans be enough to overthrow the Avengers in week four? Speaking of sequels and animals Mr. Wick is fond of, Universal follows up moderate hit A Dog’s Purpose with A Dog’s Journey. Then the director of Before I Fall, Ry Russo-Young, tackles another young adult novel with The Sun Is Also A Star. The Full Top 10: May 10-12Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94% – .05 million (3.49 million total)Pokémon Detective Pikachu (2019) 68% – million ( million total)The Hustle (2019) 14% – .53 million (.53 million total)The Intruder (2019) 33% – .60 million (.97 million total)Long Shot (2019) 81% – .12 million (.73 million total)Poms (2019) 36% – .11 million (.11 million total)UglyDolls (2019) 28% – .92 million (.27 million total)Breakthrough (2019) 63% – .46 million (.10 million total)Tolkien (2019) 51% – .15 million (.15 million total)Captain Marvel (2019) 79% – .81 million (3.77 million total)
