(Photo by Paramount Pictures)The movie Airplane!, which celebrates its 40th anniversary on July 2, is routinely regarded as the crème de la crème of spoof films.Filmmakers Jim Abrahams and brothers David Zucker and Jerry Zucker’s goofy comedy is meant to be a send-up of the Airport movies of the 1970s which capitalized on large star-studded casts and even larger theatrics as well as other films. It s Certified Fresh at 97% on the Tomatometer, and decades after its release, it still regularly makes it onto people’s lists of favorite comedies, even as the spoof comedy has fallen out of vogue.Simply put, Airplane! works because it covers something that is deathly serious  an airline disaster but doesn’t take itself too seriously. In addition to an inflatable cockpit autopilot named Otto and Lloyd Bridges’ increasingly frantic control tower supervisor he picked the wrong week to quit smoking, drinking, taking amphetamines, and sniffing glue there’s a running joke centered on whether Leslie Nielsen s Dr. Rumack understands the difference between the woman’s name Shirley and the adverb “surely.”But, even prospective first-time viewers who might balk at the spoiler-heavy paragraph above would clearly have gotten a sense of what kind of film Airplane! is from its title alone. Or, more specifically, from the exclamation point in its title.“An exclamation point is usually used for a different meaning… like a strength or importance or [to get you to] pay attention,” says Mike Kaplan, a film marketing strategist also known for his extensive collection of vintage movie posters. “With Airplane!, as I remember it, it’s a satire on the other movies that have used it. It’s an interesting jumping-off point for sure.”Kaplan, who worked on posters and campaigns for films like A Clockwork Orange, says it’s not necessarily a bad thing to see punctuation used in cinematic titles or posters as long as it “works organically” and doesn’t have the “feeling that it s been manipulated.” The point is to not be bothered by it, to almost forget it’s there. Before we spoke, he said he never paid much attention to the use of the symbol. He then remembered he’d worked on a couple campaigns that used it, including director Lindsay Anderson’s 1973 dramedy, O Lucky Man!, which stars Malcolm McDowell. Kaplan participated in a documentary about Anderson in which McDowell tells the story that the film was originally meant to be called Lucky Man, but that Anderson changed the title after reading the treatment because, Kaplan says, “that’s signifying it s more important, and that a title like Lucky Man could mean… you’re lucky for different things. But O Lucky Man! gives it a universality and importance, almost a philosophical statement.” Kaplan says he remembers the exclamation point coming in around when he did the film’s first title treatment. Anderson, whom he recalls had distinct handwriting and always wrote with red Pentel pens, responded back by noting a red exclamation point next to the title. Kaplan says it was “just the icing on the cake.”(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)As with O Lucky Man!, the exclamation point in Airplane! does a lot of the heavy lifting from a marketing standpoint. The symbol is almost shouting to the audience that the film doesn’t take itself too seriously and that some zany hijinks are in store. But this wasn’t always the case. The exclamation point used to be revered, and it was only used to signify grandeur and grab your attention. You see it in the 1960s musicals Hello, Dolly! and Oliver!.Robert Lee, a musical theatre writer who is on the faculty of the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, says he doesn’t know for sure why either of those two musicals has an exclamation point in its title, although he points out that both are set in the 1800s and “trade in nostalgia.” He wonders if they’re there to channel “old-time theater handbills” from an era when literacy rates were lower and when the exclamation point was used as a sort of punctuational carnival barker on posters to grab your attention. He also adds that both are titles derived from the leads’ names and songs sung about them. Both were also known for show-stopping numbers, and their trailers create the feeling that these are films the whole family cannot miss (even though the latter’s focus on starving London orphans isn’t exactly a happy-go-lucky topic). They’re also both based on stage productions, a medium that has a long love affair with the symbol. The double-punctuated musical revue Oh! Calcutta!, which debuted Off-Broadway in 1969, has what a 2015 New York Daily News article describes as “a pair of grammatical jazz hands.” The article quotes a branding specialist who says the title for that production works because it brings urgency, excitement and humor.”(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Abrahams and the Zucker brothers wrote the screenplay for their comedic masterpiece based on the 1957 film Zero Hour!, a World War II drama from director Hall Bartlett that takes itself extremely seriously (the Zuckers bought the rights to the film, so there’s no issue of copyright infringement). A a representative for David Zucker confirms that the filmmakers kept the exclamation point in their film’s title for that reason. They would go on to use it for other screwball spoofs like Top Secret! (a parody on both musicals and Cold War-era spy films) and their TV series Police Squad! (a knock on cop dramas), the precursor to the Naked Gun films.Henry Fuhrmann is a professor at University of Southern California’s Annenberg School of Communications and Journalism and a former chief of the Los Angeles Times copy editing desk – where he had a reputation, among myself and others, for his extreme distaste for the exclamation point. During our interview, he thinks of classic front-page headlines where the exclamation point was unavoidable, such as the one for D-Day that screamed Invasion! But he also references the F. Scott Fitzgerald quote: “Cut out all these exclamation points. An exclamation point is like laughing at your own joke.”(Photo by Douglas Aircraft Co./Los Angeles Times)He says that exclamation points were usually thought to be unnecessary in formal writing, because if a sentence “has the right active, strong verb, it will connote the tenor of the drama that you’re trying to say.”Fuhrmann says it’s a testament to Airplane! that not including the exclamation point is “an obvious error to anyone” because “you just know it’s a part of the title. Brands like Yahoo!, which also uses the punctuation symbol, do not get the same kind of respect.“It definitely works in Airplane!,” he says, because “it s just a small thing with potentially great power, and that’s what makes punctuation so interesting.”But the advent of social media has made us crave an even stronger hit of punctuation endorphins. Fuhrmann points to Gretchen McCulloch’s 2019 book Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language. There, McCulloch argues that our language has evolved so that the exclamation point connotes “warmth or sincerity, rather than just excitement.” The Comedy Central series Corporate, a dark satire about white-collar desk jockeys, directly addresses this. A broken keyboard forces one of the leads to stop using exclamation points in his emails, resulting in his bosses feeling personally attacked.pic.twitter.com/EKYFzrL95B comedycentral (@ComedyCentral) February 4, 2019However, McCulloch equates the overuse of exclamation points to “hyperbolic adjectives” like the word awesome that “lose their force through overuse.” These days, an exclamation point just doesn t convey as much as it used to. Does this mean that any potential remake of Airplane! will inevitably require multiple exclamation points in its title? Surely you can t be serious.Where You Can Watch It NowFandangoNOW (rent/own), Amazon (rent/own), Google (rent/own), iTunes (rent/own), Netflix (stream) Vudu (rent/own)Airplane! was released on July 2, 1980.

This Week s Ketchup brings you seven headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as One-Punch Man, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2, and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. This WEEK S TOP STORYSONY DELAYS SPIDER-MAN AND VENOM SEQUELS, MOVES UP UNCHARTED(Photo by ©Marvel/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)This week saw a number of release date changes for some of Sony s biggest titles, beginning with the Venom sequel, starring Tom Hardy as the titular anti-hero and Woody Harrelson as (presumably) the crimson red serial killer Carnage. That movie had been scheduled for October 2, 2020, but Venom 2 became Venom: Let There Be Carnage as it got bumped back eight months to next summer on June 25, 2021 (taking the spot where The Batman previously was to have been released). Sony Pictures also quickly took advantage of the announcement to Tweet out a brief teaser of the new title. Then, late on Friday, Sony further announced that its third Spider-Man film featuring the MCU s Tom Holland, which was set to open on July 16, 2021, will be pushed back four months to November 5, the release date of Marvel s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which was itself then also pushed back to March 5, 2022. Remember that domino effect we were talking about? Holland s other big film, the video game adaptation Uncharted, was then moved forward from October 8, 2021 to replace the untitled Spider-Man sequel in the now-vacant July 16 slot. To top it all off, the sequel to the Oscar-winning animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which had been planned for April 8, 2022, was also pushed back six months to October 7 of the same year. Whew!Other Top Headlines1. WARNER BROS. DELAYS THE RELEASES OF THE BATMAN AND SHAZAM 2 (Photo by Matt Reeves)Some of the movies originally scheduled for the summer of 2020 have been pushed back because of COVID-19, which has resulted in a domino effect, with their delays leading to delays in other films. In some cases, the movies scheduled for next year that were supposed to be filming right now need that much more extra time to get filmed, get through post-production, and get released. Few movies need quite as much time as supehero movies do, so it was probably always inevitable that Warner Bros. would have to push some of their 2021 and 2022 DC Comics movies back a bit. The biggest film being delayed is The Batman, from 6/25/2021 to October 1, 2021. Shazam! 2 was to have been released on April 1, 2022, but is now scheduled for November 4, 2022. Another studio that delayed two of their big franchise movies is Paramount Pictures, which has delayed Mission: Impossible 7 from 7/23/2021 to 11/19/2021 and Mission: Impossible 8 from 8/5/2022 to 11/4/2022, which is a curious move because it means they just put their big Tom Cruise action movie right up against the Shazam! sequel that also just moved.2. ARE YOU READY FOR (MORE) SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK? (Photo by CBS Films)Lionsgate probably did not have as big of box office success with last year s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (Certified Fresh at 78%) (5 million worldwide) as they might have hoped, but the PG-13 horror film was also produced relatively cheaply ( million), and it s also one that should have a good shelf life, since it can be revived every Halloween for a new generation of kids. That is presumably part of why Paramount Pictures (taking over from CBS Films) felt confident enough with the possible new franchise as they have pulled the trigger on a sequel by hiring the same director and writers. Director André Øvredal (Trollhunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe) and writers Dan and Kevin Hageman can now spend their COVID-19 stay-at-home time working on a new set of stories from Alvin Schwartz s original anthology books for the next movie. Which stories from the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books do you think should be adapted for the second movie?3. A HUNGER GAMES PREQUEL IS IN THE WORKS(Photo by Murray Close/Lionsgate courtesy Everett Collection)Before Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace came out over 20 years ago, there was a time when people were perhaps more optimistic about a popular franchise going back a generation to tell a prequel story about the franchise s big bad villain. Now, people look back at the Star Wars prequels and many think three movies about the young Darth Vader were maybe not a great deal, but hey, another popular franchise would never make the same mistake, right? Tell that to the people who mad The Hunger Games, because author Suzanne Collins has written an upcoming novel called The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (5/19/2020) about the future villain Coriolanus Snow when he was a young 18-year-old man. Lionsgate has quickly picked up the rights to The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which will again be directed by Francis Lawrence, who directed all of the Hunger Games movies except the first one. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes tells the story of young Coriolanus Snow, who is frustrated when he discovers he has been assigned to mentor the girl tribute from impoverished District 12 (the same district that Jennifer Lawrence s Katniss Everdeen will also eventually come from).4. POPULAR ANIME FRANCHISE ONE-PUNCH MAN GETS LIVE-ACTION ADAPTATION(Photo by Viz Media)Although last year s Pokemon: Detective Pikachu was usually credited as being a success for video game movies, the argumennt could also be made that it was just as much an adaptation of anime and manga, which is another type of live-action adaptation that has mostly struggled in Hollywood to date. As with most of these situations, it s inevitably just a matter of time before someone in the industry figures out the right project, which then becomes a big enough success that it opens the gates for others. Sony Pictures is gambling that perhaps the popular anime series One-Punch Man could be exactly that, as they are now developing a live-action One-Punch Man movie, which will be adapted for the big screen by Venom screenwriters Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner. One-Punch Man tells the continuing adventures of a superhero called Saitama who has perfected his fighting abilities to the point where he can literally defeat any opponent with just one punch, but that overwhelming power has also left him bored with his life.

The DC Extended Universe has been on a roll with solo superhero movies, and now coming off the franchise’s biggest global hit yet with Aquaman, they have another winner on their hands, according to the first reactions from critics on social media. Shazam! is smaller but arguably more fun, and it’s less connected to the DCEU than past installments, which makes it especially appealing. The real sell, though, seems to be how much heart there is in this installment. It sounds like it’s not just great but totally lovable. Here’s what the critics are saying about Shazam!:Does DC have another hit?Shazam! is another win for DC. Germain Lussier, io9DC is finally building a solid run. Shazam! is a delight! Eric Eisenberg, CinemaBlendShazam! is an absolute delight! Perri Nemiroff, ColliderI LOVED every second of it. A colorful, vibrant, vital addition to the DCEU. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionHow does it compare to other DC movies?I absolutely loved Shazam! It s my favorite DC film yet.  Dorian Parks, Geeks of ColorI m gonna go out on a limb and call Shazam! my favorite DCEU movie.  Mike Ceccini, Den of GeekDC didn t try and make a movie that fits in perfectly with the larger DC Universe. They just focused on making a great Shazam movie and hit a home run.  Steve Weintraub, ColliderShazam! is DC’s most joyful and sweet movie since the era of Christopher Reeve’s Superman… as liberated a comic book movie for DC as Deadpool was for Fox-Marvel.  Jim Vejvoda, IGN Movies(Photo by Warner Bros. Scott Menzel, We Live EntertainmentIt encapsulates the wish fulfillment and wonder of superhero comics in a way that will appeal to kids whilst being filled with non stop surprises for big comic book fans too. I loved it. Rosie Knight, NerdistIt is really well balanced, gets the magical wonder of the character and his world right, and somehow never feels like it s trying too hard. Mike Ceccini, Den of GeekIt doesn’t reinvent the superhero movie wheel, but it’s undeniably fun! Jim Vejvoda, IGN MoviesIt s basically the superhero version of Big, right?Shazam! is a super-powered Big… vivid character-driven action, heartrending central relationships and fully earned, totally satisfying emotional moments.  Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionIt’s a superhero Big. It s super fun, very funny (a few times people were laughing so loud I missed dialogue). Steve Weintraub, ColliderDoes it dare to go dark?Sometimes feels like if Joe Dante or Robert Zemeckis made a superhero movie in 1985. It s a family movie, but the villain and the magical stuff is just scary enough to give it that edge, and it never swings too far in either direction. Mike Cecchini, Den of GeekReminds of me of when kids’ movies were legitimately scary (in a good way). Dan Casey, Nerdist(Photo by Warner Bros. The frontpage in 1998. One problem: Senh had left Design Reactor and taken Rotten Tomatoes with him. The site was still hosted on Design Reactor s servers, but the trio decided that Senh would leave the company to devote himself to his passion project, and be replaced by a new Creative Director. Senh left the Bay Area and went back to Sacramento, but the accumulative work burnt him out. Even Rotten Tomatoes – where everything was still manual and included treks to the library to copy review quotes from newspapers – had lost its luster. The site stopped being updated for several weeks. People wrote in asking what was happening. Perhaps, Senh thought, he’d take a crack at his original love: Filmmaking.Senh got in touch with two Sacramento high school friends: Bobby Ly, an accountant who clerked at his family s Chinese video store where Senh rented Hong Kong movies, and Binh Ngo, who at the time was working the night shift at a veterinarian clinic. Bobby would nominally update Rotten Tomatoes, while Senh and Binh set out to shoot a movie, using Robert Rodriguez’s Rebel Without a Crew – which chronicles the director’s early and frugal days in the industry – as a guide and bible. The plan was to adapt horror novelist Dean Koontz’s novel Fear Nothing, whose protagonist has xeroderma pigmentosum, a genetic disorder that causes severe sunburn and skin pigmentation after brief daylight exposure, something that would facilitate many night shoots. After a few weeks, they had enough footage to show to close friends and family, including Binh’s sister, whose response was blunt: “This is horrible.”“How did that feel?” I asked Senh.“Not good,” he says, laughing.Did negative reviews save Rotten Tomatoes? Maybe, but both Bobby and Binh had convinced Senh that Rotten Tomatoes was still worth pursuing. The three resumed work on the site. Fear Nothing remains un-adapted.Léolo, which inspired the Rotten Tomatoes name, and A Bug s Life, whose site traffic suggested RT was being making an impact in the industry. (Photo by Pixar/Courtesy Everett Collection)Cut to early 1999, with the dotcom bubble in full bloom. I could tell because I was in high school in San Jose, the heart of Silicon Valley, and traffic was getting worse every day. Modern life had evolved computers from luxury to necessity, and mass adoption of the Internet was connecting the world in an unfathomably exciting new way. And with that, new opportunities to get rich. An idea, presented well enough, was enough to get venture capitalists to rattle their bank accounts for cash to invest, as a billion dollars in frenzied speculation transformed the Bay Area.Design Reactor was growing, significantly helped along by a deal with Disney to create and maintain everything Disney Channel online. Things were going well enough that they hired a CFO, Lily Chi, and a Marketing Director, Paul Lee, who had actually been one of Design Reactor’s co-founders.Still, people weren’t exactly tripping over themselves to invest in a web design firm. It was the ’90s. They wanted edgy, extreme. Rotten Tomatoes was identified as the breakthrough Trojan horse. Senh accepted an offer from Patrick and Stephen to reunite, bringing Binh and Bobby with him. Patrick, who was the best of the group when it came to working with people and managing relationships, raised .2 million across 1999. Rotten Tomatoes aimed to be incorporated January 2000. Design Reactor and its business would be taken over by another company in San Jose at that point. All 25 of its current employees elected to make the jump over to Rotten Tomatoes the next year.Meanwhile, with Rotten Tomatoes back in the fold, Design Reactor’s Susan Nakasora was brought over to RT right away. She had an English degree, and her job was to copyedit everything on site, including the quotes from reviews that you see on a movie’s page. Binh, relatively along for the ride, was installed as Rotten Tomatoes’ first editor-in-chief, though most of the writing involved creating spotlight copy on the homepage pointing to movies around the site. This was the start of the editorial team at Rotten Tomatoes.Binh, jokingly reflecting on the job, told me: “I kept on thinking that I only wrote two sentences through all my time there: ‘Click here’ and ‘Read more. ”(It wouldn’t be until November 2004 that Rotten Tomatoes would expand into news coverage, with features, interviews, and more. The first article we posted reported on development rumors of a Halo movie. Some things never change.)During this time, publicists began inviting staff to early movie screenings. Binh and Senh recall showing up and being denied entry the first few times, as studio representatives believed their invites to be fake. Binh presumes this was because they were fresh-faced Asians in a white male-dominated field, though Senh takes a broader interpretation.“They were generally wary of online critics and treated them as second-class citizens,” Senh says. “That was one of the reasons why I wanted to feature online critics on the Tomatometer.”THE MARKET CRASHES, BUT AN OFFICE MOVE-IN, SHOWBIZ FRIENDS, AND DIABLO LATE-NIGHTS GO A LONG WAYPatrick Lee in 2017. (Photo by Maggie West)January 2000: Three months before the dotcom bubble burst. Time to incorporate Rotten Tomatoes. One investor who was part of the .2 million angel funding had gotten cold feet, but Disney paying up on accounts receivable as Design Reactor was spun off to independence netted the team another million. Early after incorporating (under the name Incfusion, because something called Rotten Tomatoes was not considered a legitimate business), Patrick brokered a deal to have mySimon.com, a price search engine, integrated onto the site. Though no one could know it at the time, the monthly income from the deal would be crucial to RT’s imminent survival. On April 14, the bubble officially burst as the Nasdaq dropped 9% in one day. By the end of the week, the loss would be 25%, and by the end of the year, .75 trillion in Internet stock will have evaporated. Traffic in the Bay Area returns to normal.A 13-digit loss in market valuation spooked investors and the money dried up from the landscape. As other startups started dying overnight, the Rotten Tomatoes team knew hard decisions would have to be made.“At the end of the day, you can’t really fight the numbers,” Paul says. “We had an all-hands meeting, where we were honest with everybody that we have to start reducing headcount. We wanted to make sure that everybody had a chance to find something else. Because everybody was doing something very important, we had to downsize in a way that wasn’t disruptive to the business.”“We had to do what we had to do to stay alive,” Patrick says. “I remember it was 25, 21, 17, 14, 11, and then seven employees.”This was Senh, Patrick, and Stephen, the founders of Rotten Tomatoes; editorial members Binh and Susan; and CFO Lily with Marketing Director Paul.Stephen Wang in 2016. (Photo by Getty Images: Bloomberg / Contributor)More drastic measures would be taken. mySimon.com was not spared its fate as a dotcom casualty, and when that monthly income went away in 2001, Patrick and Paul opted to take no salary for the next six months. Everyone else took a 30%-50% pay cut. Patrick himself decided to move into the office.“Patrick and I were living off our savings, and one day, he had this idea that rent was his biggest expense,” Paul told us in our original oral history. “Using the justification that he was a neat freak (believe me, Patrick is borderline obsessive-compulsive when it comes to cleanliness), he kind of wondered aloud whether he could just simply move out of his apartment and live in the office.”Patrick recalled: “It wasn’t bad. We had those pretty nice couches that could expand out. I had a little fold-out mattress and a sleeping bag, so I was pretty well hidden in case a security guard came through.”Weekdays, they would work expanding the site. Weekends often saw casino trips to play poker, even down to Vegas, and hitting up the buffet line because food was cheap. Jet Li invited everyone to his house and treated them to magnificent Mongolian BBQ. Stephen got to know Ebert, and would travel to Chicago at his invitation to meet at film events he organized. A former employee who landed at Pixar got them tours and screenings at their campus down the street. And those late encounters with security at the office were never hard to explain because Senh, who disliked showing up before noon, would tinker on Rotten Tomatoes deep into the night. Some would stick around to watch movies, as others set up for that great gathering of those dotcom days: LAN parties. In our oral history, Susan recalled: “For a while there was an RT guild in World of Warcraft, consisting of several current (for that time) and past employees, plus some friends. The guild’s tabard symbol was a shape that somewhat resembled a tomato splat. Binh was awesome – a gnome warrior who wore a deep sea diving helmet.”“We would all end up playing Diablo II, until like two in the morning,” Patrick tells me. “Either fall asleep in the office or go home, and then do it again. And then on the weekends, Friday night, we would play until six in the morning, until we’re literally falling asleep at our computers.”Dance Dance Revolution was another favorite party game, which Binh suspects didn t ingratiate the team with their office neighbor the floor below. The brand was on the brink, and times were rough, but everyone still believed in Rotten Tomatoes as a viable business. They were devoted to the site, but also to each other, working on this shared mission and developing a small, unique Asian-American community in this dingy Bay Area office.Patrick’s hunch to keep your friends close after graduating was right. That was the uniqueness I felt when I first arrived – a lingering philosophy of kindness and generosity. I asked if anyone considered leaving.“No, not really,” Stephen says. “I just really enjoyed working on the project during those years. I enjoyed working with Senh and Pat and Paul. Despite all of the business challenges, the site continued to grow, the user base continued to grow. It was a steady path upwards.”There was a sense of family at Rotten Tomatoes, and for some it would become literal: Senh ended up marrying Binh’s cousin, while Susan married Patrick’s brother, Bryan.BETTER LUCK TODAY: THE SITE RECOVERS AND STARTS GIVING BACK TO ASIAN-AMERICAN CREATIVES

This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Father of the Bride, Hourman, and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. This WEEK S TOP STORYZACK SNYDER CONFIRMS NO SEQUEL FOR JUSTICE LEAGUE(Photo by Clay Enos/NETFLIX ©2020)This week, years of online campaigning finally resulted in Zack Snyder s Justice League (Fresh at 75%) premiering on HBO Max, allowing fans to see Snyder s intended vision (instead of the version directed by Joss Whedon in 2017). Even so, Zack Snyder s Justice League is something of a superhero curio. Ben Affleck won t be starring in next year s The Batman (Robert Pattinson is), Warner Bros. is rebooting Superman without Henry Cavill, and Ray Fisher is done as Cyborg. To his credit, Snyder has been pretty straightforward this week when asked about the situation, with the gist being that Zack Snyder s Justice League is not to be considered a part of the DCEU canon. Snyder said that the original plan was for this Justice League to be followed by two more films, but now, Warner Bros. hasn’t really expressed any interest in making more movies with me, and that’s 100% fine. I understand.  Snyder may be done with the Justice League, but both The Flash (11/4/2022) (featuring Ben Affleck as Batman) and Wonder Woman 3 remain in active production or development.Other Top Headlines1. BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH TO STAR AS REAL LIFE WAR MAGICIAN (Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)Benedict Cumberbatch first became famous for starring as TV s Sherlock, but in the years since, his most famous role has since become Marvel Studios Doctor Strange (Certified Fresh at 89%), with Cumberbatch now filming the sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (3/25/2022). Cumberbatch s Marvel character is obviously fictional, but for his latest project, he will star as a real life British illusionist Japser Maskelyne, who assisted the World War II war effort. The film will be called War Magician, which will be the next project from director Colin Trevorrow after recently wrapping production on Jurassic World: Dominion (6/10/2022). Jasper Maskelyne famously worked with the British military to create large scale illusions to deceive and disrupt the Nazi invasion forces, such as huge balloon tanks to inflate the size of British forces, and hide escape tools like blades or maps in combs and playing cards.2. ANTONIO BANDERAS TO RETURN AS PUSS IN BOOTS NEXT YEAR (Photo by Paramount Pictures)In 2016, DreamWorks Animation was officially acquired by NBC/Universal, which was good news for some projects, but seemed to slow down others, such as the Shrek franchise in general (the most recent Shrek feature film was Shrek Forever After in 2010). This year will also mark the 10th anniversary of the Shrek spinoff Puss in Boots, starring Antonio Banderas as the feline swashbuckler, but Universal confirmed this week that another Puss in Boots will be released by the end of next year (9/23/2022). The title of the sequel will be Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and Banderas is confirmed to be returning to voice the title character, although no other voice cast have been announced. DreamWorks Animation is also developing a return to the main Shrek franchise, but it appears that Puss in Boots will get his sequel first.3. EZRA MILLER S THE FLASH GAINS A MOM AND LOSES A DAD (Photo by Warner Bros.)If you had four free hours in the last day or so to watch Zack Snyder s Justice League, you may have noticed that the film s cast (as did Joss Whedon s version) included Billy Crudup as Henry Allen, the father of Barry Allen, A.K.A. The Flash. Crudup was also one of the first actors to start negotiations to reprise the role for The Flash (11/4/2022). As it turns out, however, he is now dropping out of The Flash due to scheduling conflicts with his role on the Apple+ drama The Morning Show. It s unclear whether the role will be recast, but at the same time as Crudup is dropping out, Spanish actress Maribel Verdú (Pan s Labyrinth, Y Tu Mama Tambien) has joined the film as Barry Allen s mother. Verdú joins a growing ensemble cast that will also include Ezra Miller (Barry Allen), Kiersey Clemons (Iris West), Ben Affleck (Batman), Michael Keaton (also Batman), and Sasha Calle (Supergirl). The Flash will be directed by Andy Muschietti (IT, Mama), working from a screenplay by Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey, Bumblebee).4. THE TIME IS FINALLY RIGHT FOR GOLDEN AGE SUPERHERO HOURMAN  (Photo by The CW)The timelines and chronologies of comic book superheroes can often be confusing to follow, in no small part because so many of the characters date back over 50 years (or, in some cases, more than 75 years). One way that DC Comics has handled this is through what DC calls legacy characters, in which younger versions of superheroes are introduced over time, resulting in a family of heroes that eventually all have the same superhero name (there have been, for example, almost a dozen different heroes called Starman). One of those DC Comics legacy heroes is Hourman, who was first introduced in 1940 as a hero who acquired superpowers for one hour at a time by taking a drug (which writers later explored in the form of drug addiction). The son of the original Hourman also became Hourman (a version of which currently co-stars on The CW s Stargirl), and in the 1990s, there was a time travelling android called Hourman, too. Despite celebrating his 80th anniversary last year, Hourman has never been in a live-action feature film, but Warner Bros. is now developing a movie that will finally correct that. Warner Bros., DC Films, and Chernin Entertainment are collaborating on a Hourman movie, starting with the hiring of screenwriters Gavin James and Neil Widener, who have also worked together in the past on the (not yet produced) sequels Now You See Me 3 and San Andreas 2. It is not yet known which of the Hourman heroes from the comics will be adapted for the Hourman movie.5. BATGIRL AND ZATANNA BOTH PART OF MYSTERIOUS WB/DC PLANS(Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Back in December, Disney revealed dozens of new projects during their Disney Investor Day event, with the biggest emphasis being on Disney+ (though not exclusively). Disney s most obvious direct competition is Warner Bros. and DC Comics (as evidenced this week by the close proximity between the streaming premieres of Zack Snyder s Justice League and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier). This week, AT T (the parent company of Warner Bros.) included a tease screen of 24 DC Comics projects currently in production or development, although the presentation did not go into as much detail for each project as Disney s did. That means that there were a few projects that were confirmed without us necessarily knowing what was confirmed. Specifically, the two highest profile projects confirmed this week were Batgirl and Zatanna. This is the biggest Batgirl movie news since 2017, when Joss Whedon had been working on a Batgirl project concurrent to finishing Justice League (though he dropped out of it just a few months later). As for the magical superhero Zatanna, she s come close to making her live-action feature film debut as part of Justice League Dark in the last ten years, but this appears to be a solo Zatanna project. It s also important to note that the presentation did not specify whether Batgirl and Zatanna will be theatrically released Warner Bros. feature films, or whether they might be intended exclusively for HBO Max.  6. ANDY GARCIA TO BE LATINX FATHER OF THE BRIDE (Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Spencer Tracy and a young Elizabeth Taylor starred as the title characters in the classic 1950 romantic comedy Father of the Bride (Fresh at 90%), which received a Steve Martin-led remake in 1991 (Fresh at 70%) that was itself popular enough to get a sequel in 1995 (Rotten at 50%). Last month, Warner Bros. revealed that the studio is developing another remake with a Latinx focus, and this week, we found out who will be the titular father. That man will be Andy Garcia, who will star as the father of a Cuban-American family, with Garcia also serving as executive producer. It sounds like Warner Bros. is fast-tracking Father of the Bride, so we should hear about more casting for other members of the family soon.7. YOUNG ROYALS FROM BLACK PANTHER AND THE CROWN JOIN PROVISION (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)This may be a total (or near total) coincidence, but Letitia Wright played a Wakandan princess in Black Panther, and Josh O Connor starred in seasons 3 and 4 of Netflix s The Crown as the young Prince Charles, and now, they re both signed to star in the same movie. Wright and O Connor have both signed to star in the Irish drama Provision, which will depict the harrowing immigration process in Ireland. Wright will play a a young African woman fleeing persecution who ends up spending over two years in Ireland’s asylum system who befriends a security guard played by O Connor.8. DANIEL RADCLIFFE JOURNEYING TO SANDRA BULLOCK S LOST CITY OF D (Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/Warner Bros.)Like many of his Harry Potter costars, Daniel Radcliffe has spent most of his post-Potterverse career focusing on more indie projects (such as Swiss Army Man, in which he played a superpowered corpse), often in roles that are more ambiguous than his strictly heroic turn as Harry Potter. This week, Radcliffe signed on to star as the main villain in Paramount Pictures romantic adventure Lost City of D, starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. The premise of Lost City of D sounds a lot like the 1980s classic Romancing the Stone, as Sandra Bullock will play a romance novelist who gets kidnapped (or targeted for kidnapping) alongside the model (Channing Tatum) who poses on her book covers.9. JAMIE FOXX AND JAIME LANNISTER KNOW GOD IS A BULLET (Photo by Priscilla Grant, JA/Everett Collection)Perhaps it s an example of apophenia, but sometimes, the coincidences in casting announcements can be hard not to notice. For example, Jamie Foxx s new co-star in the action thriller God Is a Bullet is Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who is most famous for playing Jaime Lannister in HBO s Game of Thrones (the slight spelling difference between Jamie and Jaime notwithstanding). Foxx and Coster-Waldau will be leading an ensemble cast that will also include January Jones (Mad Men), Maika Monroe (It Follows), and Andrew Dice Clay. Written and directed by Nick Cassavetes (The Notebook, John Q), God Is a Bullet will tell the story of a detective (Coster-Waldrau) whose family is murdered by a Satanic cult, which leads him to quit the force to infiltrate the cult, aided by the only woman (Maika Monroe) to ever escape it. Incidentally, Nick Cassavetes father John Cassavetes himself starred in one of the most famous movies ever about a Satanic cult, Rosemary s Baby (Certified Fresh at 96%).On an Apple device?
