But it’s also a high-octane, rollicking adventure and fitting homage to sci-fi genre classics (in case you’re into that sort of thing, too). Season 2 was largely seen as a creative misstep, but with Moonlight Oscar winner Mahershala Ali leading season 3 (and a team that professes to have learned from its mistakes), we highly recommend tuning in for its January 13 return.Where to watch: Amazon, FandangoNOW, Google Play, HBO Now, Microsoft, VuduCommitment: Approx. 17 hours (for the first two seasons)Star Trek: Discovery 84% (CBS All Access)What it is: Star Trek: Discovery is set 10 years prior to the original series and in the same universe as Kirk, Spock, and the Enterprise, and sees the titular ship venturing out to discover new worlds and quell violent alien forces. HBO picked it up to series in 2016 and largely retained the comedy s original format, just made its episodes longer.Why you should watch it: While there are plenty of primetime programs that paint a great snippet of present-day NYC, few get the full picture the way High Maintenance does. That’s because each episode features various characters who — whether they’re hosting a swingers party, rebelling against their ultra-religious parents, or sitting home alone collecting cans of La Croix — are from such disparate walks of life that they end up inadvertently highlighting the similarities between all dwellers of the concrete jungle. (And we promise those similarities go beyond enjoying the green.) Pulling semi-autobiographically from her own experience as a working mother, the series is smart, unflinching, and funny. Better yet, the twice Golden Globe–nominated series’ runtime and episode count make it very easily bingeable. What follows for the young magician is a collision between our world and a threatening fantasy world with nothing less at stake than reality as we know it.Why you should watch it: The Magicians has all the straight-up drama that comes with magic, secret academies, and battles between good and evil — and it s a whole lot of crazy fun, too. Irreverent but relatable, honest but larger than life, this hit comedy series about two twentysomething Brooklynites just trying to keep it together tapped into the cultural zeitgeist with gutsy and goofy hot takes on matters of the moment. The CW series hits a big milestone this week: the airing of its 300th episode, Lebanon. It is a rarity in television, considering the number of seasons a series needs to hit such a landmark. As star Jensen Ackles told Rotten Tomatoes when we visited the set recently, only 23 other scripted primetime television shows have reached the 300 mark, a milestone practically unheard of in the realm of genre television — except for a certain British show about a time traveler, of course.We caught up with the cast and producers just before they began production on the episode. At the time, thoughts about the milestone left them a little bewildered. As star Jared Padalecki put it, “it’s a weird juxtaposition of feelings” landing between “humility and pride at the same time.”According to Ackles, the milestone episodes “sneak up on you.” At the time of the 200th episode in 2014 — the musical episode “Fan Fiction” — he thought the show might be winding down, but it just kept getting picked up.“The seasonal pickups then dictate the episodic counts. Then you start stepping back and we re like, ‘Wait a minute, we re going to hit 300 next season?’”(Photo by Dean Buscher/The CW)Naturally, the occasion led to some reflection. Executive producer Robert Singer said he enjoys the emotional and character-forward episodes because the show is firing on all cylinders when it reaches “that combo of being kind of a good horror show, but having a lot of heart.”Executive producer Eugenie Ross-Leming in particular loved the addition of Mark Pellegrino to the cast. Initially joining the series as a temporary vessel for the Prince of Darkness in season 5, Pellegrino returned through Supernatural means to play Nick, the human forced to contain Lucifer time and time again. After years in a recurring role, season 14 marked the actor’s first season as a regular.Pellegrino, for his part, really enjoyed playing Lucifer across the years — though actors including Padalecki, Misha Collins, and Rick Springfield have also played the role.“My favorite memories are when I first came onto the show and played apocalyptic Lucifer and sort of built the mythology of Lucifer, he told Rotten Tomatoes. It s just sort of been a nice creative little journey going through the various character changes that Lucifer s gone through over the years.”When Lucifer (caged within Nick) was defeated last season, Pellegrino thought “dead was dead,” but then he remembered “it’s Supernatural,” and there is always a way back. When we talked to him, however, he was still uncertain how Nick survived the Archangel Blade.“I have theories,” he teased.One of producer Brad Buckner’s favorite moments was the decision to create the Men of Letters bunker in season 8.“[It] was a fantastic thing because it gave them roots on a show that had been rootless for so long,” he explained. “It really gave them a base of operation. Now it s a hangout place where people congregate, and I think that increased the feeling of the family dynamic that I think is really the attraction of the show.”(Photo by The CW)While still focused on Sam and Dean, the series expanded to include key characters like Castiel (Collins) and a larger world (and then a second world) beyond the Winchesters; a tradition that continues with the arrival of Jack (Alex Calvert), the son of Lucifer and a genuine Nephil — a human-angel hyrbid.“Alex is just a wonderful addition to the core cast, and he seems to fit in and blend so well,” Buckner said. “You don t get lucky like that too often, and we ve been lucky multiple times.”As one of the most recent additions to the show, Calvert has enjoyed fan interactions most of all.“Comic-con was very cool,” he said. “But another great memory that I had was last year we got to go see the Scoobynatural presentation in Hollywood, which was so cool, because we got to watch it with 1,000 fans.” He appreciated the vibe, which he said felt like “we were doing a midnight screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show.”For Danneel Ackles, who recurred in season 13 as Sister Jo and the angel Anael, her favorite memory revolves around the moment she finally understood her husband’s least favorite part of the job: outdoor shoots in the dead of winter.“He ll call me and I m chasing all these children around, and he s like, ‘It s freezing. You don t understand, I ve just been doing a scene outside for seven hours,’” she said. Her go-to response: Don t be a baby, you re an actor. There s a cheese plate coming. That changed after she did a scene with Pellegrino in extreme conditions.“It was like 20 below zero and the wind s blowing and we re just — I ve never been so cold in my life, she said. I had heat packets stuffed in places I can t tell you about. I was like, ‘Oh, I get it, I get the show.’”One thing fans definitely get about the show is Castiel. The character has become a popular cosplay subject at comic conventions — even if his costume resembles a certain other trench coat enthusiast with ties to the mystical. But the confusion led to one of Collins’ favorite off-set memories.“I often on Halloween see kids dressed as Castiel, because it s now become a thing, Collins said. My family was eating at this pizza place and I saw this kid dressed as Castiel and I went up to his table. He was about 10. I put my face right in his face and I said, What are you dressed as, young man? And he looked at me horrified and said, ‘Constantine.’ Then his dad said, ‘Get away from my son.’”Supernatural s 300th episode airs Thursday, Feb. 7 at 8/7C on The CW.

With that in mind, he s now set to work with the guy who helped re-establish Keanu Reeves as an action star: David Leitch (John Wick, Atomic Blonde, and the aforementioned Deadpool 2). Pitt has signed with Sony Pictures to star in an action thriller called Bullet Train that will be directed by Leitch, whose most recent film was last year s Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw (Fresh at 67%). Bullet Train will be an adaptation of the Japanese novel Maria Beetle by Kotaro Isaka and will tell the story of five assassins who find themselves on the same train from Tokyo, which undoubtedly leads to lots of shooting and stabbing and kicking and punching. JUDE LAW IN TALKS FOR CAPTAIN HOOK IN DISNEY S LIVE-ACTION PETER PAN WENDY(Photo by Alex Bailey/©Focus Features)It certainly seems like there have been a lot of live action takes on J.M. Barrie s Peter Pan in recent years, including films as 2003 s Peter Pan (Certified Fresh at 77%), 2015 s Pan (Rotten at 27%), this year s Wendy (Rotten at 37%). One of the companies that has stayed out of the live-action Peter Pan business until this point has actually been the one that would ve seemed the most obvious choice, which is Walt Disney Pictures. Disney s 1953 animated Peter Pan is arguably the play s most famous adaptation, and that film s version of Tinker Bell became an icon for Walt Disney Pictures, used in various opening credit animations over the years. On top of that, Disney is very much in the ongoing process of adapting its most famous animated films into live-action ones. The live-action adaptation of Peter Pan will be called Peter Pan Wendy, and it will be directed by David Lowery, who previously directed the live remake of Pete s Dragon (Certified Fresh at 88%). We don t yet know which young actors will play the title characters (or Tinker Bell, for that matter), but this week, the news broke that Jude Law is in talks with Disney to play the villain, Captain Hook. If he signs on, he will take on a role previously played by the likes of Dustin Hoffman (Hook), Jason Isaacs (Peter Pan), and Hugh Jackman (Pan).2. THE INVISIBLE MAN DIRECTOR ALSO IN TALKS FOR RYAN GOSLING S WOLFMAN (Photo by Saeed Adyani/©Columbia Pictures/courtesy Everett Collection)Australia s Leigh Whannell is a producer, director, and screenwriter who got his start collaborating on Saw with future Aquaman director James Wan in a career arc that most recently included Universal Pictures reboot of The Invisible Man (Certified Fresh at 91%), starring Elisabeth Moss. That film happened after Universal Pictures scrapped their previous Dark Universe plans for rebooting their classic monsters, which would have included Johnny Depp starring in The Invisible Man and rumors of Dwayne Johnson possibly starring in Wolfman. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic happening just as The Invisible Man was opening in theaters, the film was otherwise a financial success, so Univeral Pictures is moving forward with similar reboots, including Wolfman. Just about a month ago, the news broke that Ryan Gosling was the studio s top choice to star in Wolfman, and it now appears that Gosling has indeed signed on, as Universal Pictures is in talks with Leigh Whannell about writing and directing Wolfman to continue the thread between The Invisible Man and their ambitious werewolf movie. Whannell and Gosling have reportedly wanted to work with each other for some time. 3. OPRAH WINFREY LAUNCHES PARTNERSHIP TO ADAPT PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING THE 1619 PROJECT (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Last year, The New York Times Magazine began a new series called The 1619 Project, named after the arrival of the first ship of enslaved Africans to the coast of the colony of Virginia. Producer Oprah Winfrey is now collaborating with Lionsgate and The New York Times on a series of feature films and television projects that will be based on The 1619 Project. Journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for The 1619 Project, and she will be a key participant in the projects Oprah Winfrey has planned. It is not yet known which of the true stories documented in The 1619 Project will be adapted as feature films, but the Variety s news item references titles like, America Wasn t a Democracy Until Black Americans Made It One and American Capitalism is Brutal: You Can Trace That to a Plantation. The 1619 Project scope will reportedly include multiple feature films, TV series, documentaries, and other cross-platform content for a global audience. 4. MAZE RUNNER AND JOJO RABBIT STARS SOUGHT FOR PETER FARRELLY S NEXT FILM(Photo by Dee Cercone, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Before winning an Academy Award for Best Picture for Green Book (Certified Fresh at 77%), director Peter Farrelly was probably best known for comedies like Dumb and Dumber and There s Something About Mary. For his next film, Farrelly is returning to the 1960s setting of Green Book with an adaptation of the non-fiction book The Greatest Beer Run Ever, about a young man who traveled to Vietnam to reunite with friends who were soldiers in the war. The first actor to sign on for The Greatest Beer Run Ever a few weeks ago was Viggo Mortensen, who also starred in Green Book. This week, Mortensen was reportedly joined by Dylan O Brien, one of the stars of MTV s Teen Wolf (who s speculated but not confirmed to be playing the lead role). For the female lead, producers are also reportedly eyeing Jojo Rabbit co-star Thomasin McKenzie, but she s not signed yet.5. TIFFANY HADDISH WILL TRAVEL TO AFRICA TO BE CROWNED HOMECOMING QUEEN (Photo by Michele K. Short/Universal Pictures)Once a separate Hollywood studio, the former DreamWorks SKG, co-founded by Steven Spielberg, has in recent years been divided a few times over, with the live-action production company now being called Amblin Partners (not to be confused with Spielberg s own Amblin Entertainment). Some of the recent films produced by Amblin Partners have included First Man, Best Picture Oscar-winner Green Book, and ten-time Academy Award nominee 1917. Amblin Partners is now developing a comedy for Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip, Night School) called Homecoming Queen to be written by Raamla Mohamed, a TV writer who s worked on Scandal and Little Fires Everywhere. Haddish will star in and also produce Homecoming Queen, which is reportedly inspired by Haddish s own experience traveling to Africa thinking she was royalty, only to find out that that designation means something completely different there. Other upcoming movies that share an African royalty theme include Eddie Murphy s sequel Coming 2 America (12/18/2020) and Marvel s Black Panther II (5/6/2022).6. JANELLE MONAE S ACTIVELY PETITIONING TO BE MARVEL S STORM IN X-MEN REBOOT (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Most sites reporting on movie development news try to avoid stories that hew too close to rumors, but every once in a while, a big enough star will actively campaign for a role that it will inevitably become a story, even if there s no deal in negotiation. The most recent example of this came just this week from singer and actress Janelle Monáe (Moonlight, Hidden Figures), whose horror film Antebellum is among those that would have originally been released in theaters if not for the COVID-19 pandemic. In a recent interview, Monáe revealed that one of the roles she hopes to take on is the mutant superhero Storm of Marvel s X-Men, who has previously been played in film by both Halle Berry and Alexandra Shipp (in X-Men: Apocalypse). Monáe said she brought it up while talking to director Ryan Coogler (currently working on Black Panther II, scheduled for 5/6/2022). While the country has been largely spared from the worst effects of the COVID-19 pandemic (one of the reasons so many Hollywood productions have set up shop there), audiences were still cautious about large indoor gatherings, and snap lockdowns to snuff out small COVID-19 outbreaks – even in the low single-digits – were a regular occurrence in major cities. But Bana, his fellow producers, and distributor Village Roadshow felt sure they had something special in their adaptation of Jane Harper s hugely popular book of the same name, the kind of Australian movie that might just bring Australian audiences back to cinemas in big numbers. And it turns out they were right.The Dry follows Bana s Melbourne-based detective, Aaron Falk, who returns to the rural town in which he was raised to attend the funeral of a childhood friend who appears to have killed his wife and child in a murder-suicide. Reconnecting with friends and sparring with enemies from his youth, Falk becomes sucked into the case which, it turns out, has links to another mystery from 20 years ago – one in which he may have played a part. These dual twisting threads, Bana s stoic and layered work as Falk, and an incredible look that splays the baked Australian landscape across the screen to stark and arresting effect, made The Dry a hit in Australia. In January and February, it became the movie to see there, a might-have-been-indie-thriller that tapped into the popular consciousness like a big-budget Hollywood action flick, and it now ranks as the 15th biggest Australian movie ever at the local box office. (Fun if unsurprising fact: Crocodile Dundee is number one.)Talking with Rotten Tomatoes, Bana is clearly chuffed with the film s success Down Under, and excited for American and international audiences now to be transported to Kiewarra, the fictional farming community in which The Dry s twin mysteries unfold. The movie opens in theaters here on May 21. From his home in Melbourne, the star of Troy, Munich, and Romulus, My Father – his last Aussie film before The Dry – opened up about the sudden popularity of Australian movies in Australian cinemas (The Dry was part of a high-earning crop of recent films including High Ground and Penguin Bloom), scouting the perfect locations to bring Kiewarra to life, and what he hopes will be the impact of so many overseas productions shooting in his backyard. It was a great experience and I have to let you know that you re actually responsible for getting my mother a date: we were in the lobby before the movie and I d gone to get popcorn and when I came back a man had come up to her with a notepad. She introduced me, and she said, This is John and he s giving me his number. Eric Bana: This might be my favorite theatrical story yet from The Dry.Rotten Tomatoes: She took the number and he walked away, but he also said, I had to say your mother was beautiful and I had to shoot my shot. And mom hadn t been to the movies in 10 years! There s not really a question there, but I guess: How do you feel making love happen?Bana: That is pretty spectacular. I love that story. It s in a lot of ways symbolic of, as you mentioned, so many people going back to the cinema for the first time. Not only I guess regular cinema goers, but we ve found that there are a lot of people who, for whatever reason, just really felt compelled to see this film on a big screen, which is so rewarding for us because it s exactly what our intention was. The way that that energy was picked up on by the Australian public was beyond what we had obviously expected, so it was amazing.Rotten Tomatoes: It was a very strange thing to be back in Australia and have the likes of network morning TV talking about this Australian film as a phenomenon. Our films sometimes struggle to cut through the clutter back home. And at the same time as The Dry, cinemas were filled with more Aussie films: Penguin Bloom and High Ground and Rams and all these other films were out. Was it a kind of exciting moment to see Australians going to the movies to see Australian films?Bana: Yeah, it was. It was exciting because it was a deliberate thing. We wanted the film to be commercial. We knew that it had the hallmarks of an indie – with dark themes. But on top of that, there was a potential to try and lure people in with a more commercial sell, which is why [distributor] Village Roadshow were such good partners for us.But you re right, it was the beginning. The release date was really scary when we got it, January 1. [Editor’s note: COVID-19 cases were down in low single and double-digits in Australia at the time, but cinemas were only newly operating at capacity and snap lockdowns were regular occurrences in Australian cities.] It was sink or swim. But we felt really confident in the film and that it helped set up this trend of people going, Yeah, we really want to get behind these Australian films. It has changed the language around theatrical releases for Australian films, which is the thing that I m most excited about and that all the producers are excited about: That we can start seeing the potential for Australian films and think about them differently.(Photo by Courtesy of IFC Films. An IFC Films Release.)Rotten Tomatoes: It s exciting to be here back in America now and seeing these films being released and embraced here. The Dry struck me, though, as quite particularly Australian in some ways – it deals with issues that we face, I think, more acutely than some other nations, like the drought and the problem of gambling; and it also gave me a lot of Wake In Fright vibes with the aggressive macho-ness that your character faces at the pub. But in what ways do you feel the movie is universal, and what are you hoping that international audiences are going to get from this film?Bana: Look, we were really lucky that Jane Harper chose to set the story in a fictitious Victorian town of Kiewarra. The key elements of the thriller/whodunit would have worked in any country, in any landscape, with her writing. But we felt like the worst thing we could have done was set this film in Texas, because the hyper-Australian-ess and the attention to detail of the characters and locations are what makes it so specific and is what makes it unique, and that s what made the book unique.That was playing to our strengths, because it was language we understood, it was characters we understood, it was locations and landscape that we understood. It enabled us, in terms of producers, directors, actors, crew, cinematography, to elevate our game to the highest possible level in a local landscape. By making it hyper-Australian in terms of its detail, I think it helps amp up all those other aspects of an already completely solid story and whodunit, which would have worked like I say in any landscape around the world, but fortunately for us it was set here.To answer your question, I hope the audience enjoys being transported. We re really excited about the idea that Americans will feel like they ve spent two hours in Kiewarra at the end of the film. I m really, really excited to see Americans reactions, because it s a depiction of – as you know – rural Australia that we don t always get in cinema. It s usually quite a caricature. It s usually the Outback. It s not usually these towns, which is how – I don t know about you – but how I identify with rural Australia is through these little country towns.Rotten Tomatoes: And they re towns that are changing, they re affected by a number of impacts. I found the choice for John Polson s character to live in that isolated McMansion/new monstrosity very interesting.Bana: Yeah.(Photo by Courtesy of IFC Films. An IFC Films Release.)Rotten Tomatoes: That said, we do also get these amazing vistas and we do get this beautiful – somewhat despairing if you think about the drought that underlies it – striking imagery. From what I understand, you were part of the location scouting for this film. What was that process like and visually what were you going for in terms of the locations?Bana: We really wanted to try and capture the essence of what Jane had written in the book. We knew that area, the Wheat Belt of Victoria, which is about five hours away from the city in which I am now, Melbourne. There was no one town that could do the job so we based ourselves in a place called Warracknabeal and then we had about an hour-and-a-half circle from there that we could cherry pick all these tiny little towns to stitch together our Kiewarra. So, we use the pub from Minyip, we ll use the main street from Beulah, we ll use the house from here, and so forth.It was a lot of different locations to get the greatest possible visual consistency with what was in the book. Stefan Duscio, our Director of Photography, did an amazing job. He is from the country and really understands that landscape. Because you had to believe that the dryness and the tension and the mental scarring that comes from people not only living through a severe drought, but also being dependent upon rainfall in order to survive financially and emotionally as well.We shot the beginning of 2019, at the peak of the drought and just as the bush fires were starting. It just felt, it did, it felt like it was never going to rain. It did rain after we left, which is traditional for film crews, of course, but it was very important to us.Rotten Tomatoes: You’ve spoken about what was important to you as the producer of this film. I m wondering, as you look at what you re going to produce next, and as you develop a body of work that you ve produced, is there a guiding principle or something you re looking to do with the projects that you want to shepherd now?Bana: They tend to be projects that I want to be very closely involved in myself. I don t want to be someone who just attaches their name to things for the sake of it. So, it will generally be stuff that I m intrinsically involved with. I was fortunate enough that in this case, Bruna Papandrea, the producer who acquired the rights some years ago, was someone that we knew well and wanted to get involved with. That was wonderful to learn from her and my co-producer, Robert Connolly, who is our director as well, who is just so experienced and fantastic.I guess, yeah, it s stuff that I really feel that I can have a solid contribution to and have a voice in. The Dry was a “gimme” because it was in my backyard. I knew the area; we were working out of our office and post-production was just a two-minute walk away, so it was fantastic in that sense.(Photo by Courtesy of IFC Films. An IFC Films Release.)Rotten Tomatoes: It s great to see Australian movies at the cinemas, but the other thing that s happening in Australia at the moment is that it feels like every American production in the world is currently based there on the Gold Coast or in Byron Bay – largely thanks to COVID being fully under control and some generous tax incentives. I m wondering, what do you hope the impact of all this activity that s happening now will be for the local industry? There is a fear I see when speaking to some people that everyone is going to pack up once the pandemic ends and things settle back to normal, and tax incentives won t be enough to keep this level of production in the country. Is there a hope you have or something you re thinking about in terms the impact of all this production happening right now?Bana: I think the volume is such that definitely there will be a slight legacy there – that more people will feel comfortable traveling to Australia to film. I m confident that there will be some kind of continual, residual value in people being comfortable with Australia as a shooting location, even when we lose our ultra-competitive edge due to COVID and the situation being back to normal. Obviously, the UK is a long way off being back online in that strong production sense. We will lose some production, eventually, so hopefully we can regain some of that.But it s really important that we strike the right balance and that we make the most of the theatrical energy that came out of this year with Australian cinema. We re starting to get government to really pay attention now, which is great, both on a state level here in Victoria and on a federal level with the offset remaining at 40% – which was super, super important.I hope that there is a long tail. I think we have to be prepared for that drop-off that you talk of, when the rest of the world goes back to normal and every other shooting location becomes available. But hopefully there will be a bit of a legacy here and people go, “Actually, it was great shooting down there. Studios were great in all the different cities. Australians made us feel welcome.”You d like to think it s not just a tax break that lures someone to a shooting location. And I ve been on the receiving end of that myself. I ve worked in a lot of international cinema that s shot in tax-break locations, so I get it and I ve benefited from that, so I can t criticize that process too much. But at the same time, what makes those locations something that you want to go back to are the crews and the conditions and how great those cities are to be in – it makes a really big difference.Hopefully, we can get our way into people s hearts and all these directors, producers, actors want to keep coming back here. That s what we have to try and concentrate on.(Photo by ©Dendy Films/Courtesy Everett Collection)Rotten Tomatoes: You hadn’t made an Australian film for quite some time before The Dry. Are you focused on staying there at the moment and working on Australian stories? Or are you still open to what tickles you, wherever it happens to be?Bana: It s not a driving principle for me. Since Romulus, My Father (pictured above), Rob [Connolly, who directed Romulus and The Dry] and I have been looking to find something to do at home because this is where we live and it s obviously hugely advantageous. I don t have to fly 24 hours to go to work; it was novel to shoot something at home!It has to compete with everything else on the pile. I don t feel like a patriotic sense of “I must do this many Australian films.” I d much rather do the greatest work I can possibly do here when it comes along. That, I think, is a more important contribution. I don t have a personal quota or anything like that. Obviously, if I found something else to do here that was of that quality, I d do it tomorrow.But the pool is much smaller here, obviously. The Australian pile is much smaller, and it s much harder for me to find films of that quality here at the same frequency as I do. So, there s no real priority given to it, but obviously it s hugely rewarding when it does come along.Rotten Tomatoes: And just finally, I know you said it s a very particularly Australian story and that s what elevates it. But also because of its interesting structure, this dual mystery, it has a hook where I can see it could be remade. They could take this idea and set it somewhere else as a remake. I m not saying that anyone s suggested that, but it did pop into my head. How would you feel about potentially having a remade version of this in another location or country?Bana: I m good with accents! [Laughs]. I ve had people ask me about a sequel; I haven t had people ask me about a version in another country. I ll just go play Aaron in Denmark or Germany! That s not something I ve heard, yet. Let s hope that the specific nature of this one means that people would rather experience the original and not have the accent subtitled even in English. Let s hope they can understand what the hell we re saying and enjoy. Enjoy our wonderful Australian accents for a change. It s not often Australians get to play Australians in international cinema. I m happy for them to get a real taste of Australia through this film.Rotten Tomatoes: My favorite accent moment in any film, by the way, happens to be Leslie Mann making fun of how you say No in Funny People.Bana: [Laughing] Yeah, it was pretty special. Just over five years ago at the 88th Academy Awards, Alejandro González Iñárritu won the Oscar for Best Director for The Revenant (Certified Fresh at 78%), which also won Best Cinematography and Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, and this week, Iñárritu was finally able to start filming his first feature film in the five-plus years since. The project, called Limbo, is now filming on location in Mexico City. Iñárritu also wrote the film, which doesn t yet have an official synopsis, except that it explores the political and social modernity of Mexico. Iñárritu s choice to film in Mexico City following his Hollywood success with The Revenant could also be compared to Alfonso Cuaron s Roma (Certified Fresh at 95%), which was filmed in Mexico City following his own Hollywood success with Gravity (Certified Fresh at 95%). No casting announcements have been made yet for Limbo.Other Top Headlines1. J.J. ABRAMS HIRES FIRST FEMALE STAR TREK FEATURE SCREENWRITER(Photo by Paramount Pictures)It was just last week that producer J.J. Abrams and his Bad Robot production company hired award-winning writer Ta-Nehisi Coates to work on the new Superman reboot (featuring an actor of color as the lead, for a historic first). This week, Abrams moved forward with another first as Bad Robot has hired screenwriter Kalinda Vasquez to work on the next Star Trek feature film. This project should not be confused with the Star Trek that Quentin Tarantino was announced as partnering with Abrams and Bad Robot in 2017 (as that one appears to have cooled down in the years since). If Vasquez s work on this project makes it to production, she will become the first woman ever to write a Star Trek feature film. In addition to serving as executive producer on shows like Runaways, Star Trek: Discovery, Once Upon a Time, and Fear the Walking Dead, Kalinda Vasquez has also written episodes of all of those shows, plus four episodes of Prison Break and seven episodes of Nikita. It is not yet known if her Star Trek project will introduce a new cast or use one of the previous casts (like say, the Kelvin crew of Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, etc.) Paramount Pictures does not currently have any Star Trek feature films on the studio s release schedule.2. ANNETTE BENING TO PORTRAY RECORD-BREAKING SWIMMER DIANA NYAD (Photo by Suzanne Tenner/©Focus Features)Diana Nyad is a record-breaking long distance swimmer whose accomplishments include swimming from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage, swimming from Jamaica to Florida, and swimming around the island of Manhattan in under 8 hours. Nyad s amazing life is now set to be adapted as the biopic Nyad, with four-time Academy Award nominee Annette Bening attached to star. Nyad will mark the narrative feature film directorial debut of the team of Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, who won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for their 2018 documentary Free Solo (Certified Fresh at 98%), which depicted a similar form of endurance sport (free solo mountain climbing). Nyad is being adapted from her autobiography Find a Way, with filming expected to start sometime this summer.3. RUSSELL CROWE TO STAR AS ABSTRACT ARTIST MARK ROTHKO (Photo by © Universal Pictures)There have obviously been dozens of biopics about famous painters, but so far, we have relatively few to date about abstract painters (Pollock, Certified Fresh at 80% starring Ed Harris, is a notable exception). That field will soon expand as the life of artist Mark Rothko is about to be portrayed by Russell Crowe in Rothko. Mark Rothko is best known for his color field paintings of large fields of bright colors in squares or rectangles. Rothko will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey, Nowhere Boy). The Rothko cast will include Irish actress Aisling Fraciosi (as Rothko s daughter), Jared Harris, Michael Stuhlbarg, and the director s husband Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Pietro from Marvel s Avengers: Age of Ultron). Adapted from the book The Legacy of Rothko by Lee Seldes, Rothko will focus on the protracted legal dispute between Kate Rothko and the painter’s estate executors and the directors of his gallery, Marlborough Fine Art, which you can read more about here.4. MELISSA MCCARTHY TO PORTRAY MAJOR MARVEL VILLAIN IN THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER SORT OF (Photo by Hopper Stone/©Columbia Pictures)Some of the funniest surprises in Taika Waititi s Thor: Ragnarok (Certified Fresh at 93%) came early in the film when we first saw some Asgardian actors depicting the events of earlier Thor movies, including Matt Damon as Loki, Sam Neill as Odin, and Chris Hemsworth s brother Luke Hemsworth as Thor. There has been a fair amount of new coverage of actors like Matt Damon returning to Australia for filming of the fourth movie, Thor: Love and Thunder (5/6/2022), but this week, we actually heard about someone new. Several photos have emerged online this week of comedic actress Melissa McCarthy in costume on the sets in Australia as the villainous character Hela, as portrayed by Cate Blanchett in Thor: Ragnarok, with the other actors-playing-actors like Matt Damon also on set with McCarthy. In similar news, we also learned this week that the upcoming sports comedy sequel Space Jam: A New Legacy (7/6/2021) will also feature cameo appearances by some of Warner Bros other film properties, including Batman, Mad Max, and Casablanca.5. THIS WEEK IN MUSICAL BIOPICS: BOB MARLEY, AND ROBBIE WILLIAMS (AS A MONKEY?) (Photo by Everett Collection)Although both films are now a few years old, the box office successes of Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman (Certified Fresh at 89%) continue to have a ripple effect on other musical biopics getting produced. That includes musical biopic projects which have languished in development for years, or in some cases, decades. The life story of famed reggae musician Bob Marley is one such example. Paramount Pictures is finally getting closer to production with the news this week that the studio has hired director Reinaldo Marcus Green, who comes to the Bob Marley biopic even as he continues work on another biographical film, King Richard, about the father (played by Will Smith) of future tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams. In a sad coincidence, the movement on the Bob Marley biopic comes in the same week that saw the passing of Marley s musical partner Bunny Wailer at the age of 73. British pop star Robbie Williams is also getting a biopic called Better Man to be directed by Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman). In a bizarre revelation, this week, Deadline reported that the role of Robbie Williams will be portrayed by a CGI monkey, apparently, quite seriously.6. DUNGEONS DRAGONS MOVIE CASTS DETECT EVIL SPELL ON HUGH GRANT (Photo by Jay Maidment/©Warner Bros. Pictures)Actor Jeremy Irons has had a film career with many great heights, but one of his lowest lows may have come in 2000, when he starred as the evil villain in the first Dungeons Dragons feature film (Rotten at 10%). One has to speculate that Hugh Grant is hoping for a better result with his decision this week to take the role of the main villain (called Forge Fletcher) in the new Dungeons Dragons movie (5/27/2022). Sophia Lillis, who has recently starred as both Nancy Drew and Beverly in the IT movies, has also take a role as a character named Doric (neither of these names seem to point towards popular characters from existing D D stories). This new Dungeons Dragons reboot is being written and directed by the team of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who also collaborated on Game Night (Certified Fresh at 85%). It is not yet known if the Dungeons Dragons movie will be set entirely in a fantasy world, or if some part of it might also depict real world players. Hugh Grant and Sophia Lillis are joining a cast which already includes Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton), Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and Justice Smith.7. WRINKLE IN TIME STAR STORM REID MAY GET LOST IN SEARCHING 2 (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Although it wasn t a box office blockbuster, the independent social media mystery drama Searching (Certified Fresh at 92%) was still a surprise hit relative to its budget. Jon Cho and Michelle La starred as father and daughter in the first Searching, but apparently for the upcoming sequel, a new cast is being sought as the formula will be applied to a new family and setting. We don t know specifically how different or similar the sequel s premise will be, so we have relatively little to guess on, but we can report that 17 year old actress Storm Reid is now in talks for a lead role in Searching 2. Reid made her feature film debut in 12 Years a Slave, had the lead role in A Wrinkle in Time, and is also one of Zendaya s co-stars in HBO s Euphoria.8. HELLO KITTY FINALLY GETTING HER BIG SHOT AT THE MEOW-VIES (Photo by Saban International courtesy Everett Collection)The Japanese design company Sanrio has had over 45 years of success with their popular Hello Kitty character, including in the United States, but for the most part, attempts to carry Hello Kitty over in formats like TV or the movies have not taken off outside of Japan. Back in October of 2019, we reported that New Line Cinema had acquired the film rights to Hello Kitty, but we hadn t heard much since then. This week, we finally got confirmation that the studio is actively developing a Hello Kitty feature film that will combine live action and animation (like this week s Tom and Jerry). New Line Cinema has hired two directors for their Hello Kitty movie: Jennifer Coyle and Leo Matsuda. Coyle s credits as director include 23 episodes of DC Super Hero Girls and 13 episodes of Bob s Burgers, while Matsuda s credits are mostly as an animator or story artist on projects like The Simpsons Movie, Wreck-It Ralph, and Zootopia.9. JONATHAN MAJORS TO STAR IN MILITARY DRAMA 892(Photo by The Washington Post/Getty Images)One of the shows that premiered right in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic when many people were hungry for something to binge was HBO s spooky Lovecraft Country, starring Jonathan Majors. In the months since, Majors was able to translate that show s success to a new gig at Marvel Studios as one of the company s most prolific super villains, Kang the Conqueror, in the sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (TBA 2022). This week, Majors signed on for another project, which will be a drama called 892 about a marine war veteran who suffers from PTSD. In somewhat related news, following recent allegations, rapper-turned-actor T.I. will not be returning for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania after co-starring in the first two Ant-Man movies. It is unclear if this was always the plan, or if Marvel Studios is making the change based on the allegations against T.I. and his wife Tameka Tiny Harris. Likewise, we also don t know if the other Ant-Man supporting characters played by Michael Peña and David Dastmalchian will be returning or not.On an Apple device? I mean, I was always, personally, like, does Eric really have to follow this guy? It definitely went against the grain for me, I’ve got to say. A place where I thought we could be together again… and then you go and drop a stadium on the White House.The Evolution of their RelationshipMcAvoy: I don t feel like it s that different [now]. Do you know what? We had more to do together in First Class and Days of Future Past, less so in Days of Future Past, but we had more to do with each other in every film in the past; Apocalypse there was less to do. Until finally, we find ourselves in this movie saying like three words to each other. So that s how it s changed massively; we don t get to do it. I think it s a great travesty, and one of the great missed opportunities of this incarnation of the X-Men saga.Fassbender: Agreed. We do get to play a game of chess in this last one.McAvoy: We do. We do.Fassbender: We come full circle.(Photo by © Twentieth Century Fox)Reflecting on Each Other s PerformanceMcAvoy: My favorite performance of his in [the X-Men films] is definitely First Class because I think that was really, truly, actually a great film balancing an ensemble and giving everybody an arc and stuff, but in terms of who that film is really about, that was the origin story for Magneto in essence. And just getting to see him rock this… not just mutant leader figure, which he wasn t yet, but actually imbue it with a sort of James Bond, espionage, spy-like quality as well. That was just a wicked thing to do with your character.Fassbender: I would say Days of Future Past. Because you really go through the ringer in that one. And just in general, something with James, which is pretty impressive to see, is like, he s got a really good understanding of storytelling, like where the character is in the journey of the character and where it should end up at the end. Just that sort of awareness of a character journey. So much so that what we see in this last film – the germ of it was there in First Class, which was this idea that you had we ve always seen Professor X in such a positive light. He s always so giving and generous, and you were like, well, there s a flip side to that, you know. That there was an element of his ego that was there and to be explored, and of course, we see the whole effect of it here in this movie. So that s been cool to watch over four movies. That s impressive.Team Magneto or Team Professor X?McAvoy: There s a great line in Braveheart from the late actor, great actor, Ian Bannen, who said to Robert the Bruce when he s trying to caution him and say, don t go off and fight with William Wallace, right, even though it s the right thing to do, don t go and do it. He says, It s really easy to like him, isn t it? Because uncompromising men are easy to like. And it s true. Erik s so uncompromising, you re drawn to him. But also, he s always right as well. Humanity is going to stab us in the back, he says. And they do. They always do. So, I think I would go with Erik.Fassbender: I think I m going to go with Charles just because I think in order to move forward, you have to integrate. Remember when we were storming that building in Russia, and we were laying in the long grass just chatting. It was like a scene in Out of Africa or something.McAvoy: Oh, in between takes.Fassbender: Yeah. And that s where, I think, it all started.Making Cherik a Throuple – with an MCU Hero or One of the X-MenFassbender: [After understanding the throuple question] I m going to go Sophie [Turner}, Jean Grey. Because she s the most powerful mutant out there. Well like, you know, if we re going to have a team, we re solid.James: I would definitely want to go with somebody who s a psychic because I think we could have some crazy, mind-bending fun. It s not easy to explain the premise of Netflix s newest epic fantasy series, Shadow and Bone, to a newcomer. After all, it s based on not one but two different book series set in a sprawling fictional universe with complex narratives and different timelines. But we asked the stars and co-creator of the series, which premieres April 23, to try. It s a fantasy show — it has the Harry Potter elements, it has the Game of Thrones elements, it has Lord of the Rings elements, it has elements of Star Wars, star Archie Renaux said. But really at its core, I think it s a coming-of-age story about a girl discovering she has this power that could really unite her country, which has been divided in two by this expansive, massive darkness called the Shadow Fold. Honestly, it s a pretty great elevator pitch for the eight-episode drama, which is based on Leigh Bardugo s Shadow and Bone/Grishaverse trilogy and its companion duology, Six of Crows. The series follows teenage soldier Alina Starkov, an orphan from the Russian-inspired land of Ravka who discovers an unharnessed magical power that could be the key to helping fight the supernatural forces that have been dividing her country via a dense darkness called the Shadow Fold.(Photo by David Appleby/Netflix) At first glance, it is your traditional dark versus light massive-scale fantasy allegory in a war-torn world in which some of the characters, the Grisha, have magical abilities, star Ben Barnes explained.Plus: heists! The world has a czar-punk Russian aesthetic mixed with an industrial revolution vibe, which means you have early trains and guns and revolvers mixed with magic and swords and horses and capes. And complicated love risks and unspoken feeling and massive amounts of of tension between all of the characters and their individual agendas and politics of power, Barnes said.Barnes and Renaux star alongside Jessie Mei Li, who plays heroine Alina. An orphan since she was a young girl, Alina s closest ally is her BFF and fellow orphan Mal (Renaux). Although in the books Alina is from Ravka, in the show she s half Shu Han — which adds another layer of depth to her struggle, considering Ravka has been in conflict with its neighbors Shu Han and Fjerda. With the supernatural Shadow Fold blocking most of Ravka s access to the True Sea (and thus all trade), Ravkans must make their way through the terrifying area in order to survive.Barnes, Renaux, and showrunner Eric Heisserer (the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Arrival and Netflix fave Bird Box, among others) spoke to Rotten Tomatoes about what fans can expect from the first season of their series, including the star power of Li, green-screen acting, some romance, and even some spoiler-free details about what could happen in season 2, should Netflix give it the green light.
