The American Radium Factory employed a group of young women to paint the dials of watches with glow-in-the-dark paint that contained radium, unaware of the dangers of working so directly with the element. Before the side-effects were known to the public, the girls would dip and lick brushes containing the toxic substance, causing catastrophic physical effects and eventual death. The Radium Girls, as they were dubbed, did fight back, however, and sued their employer, who they suspected knew about the deadly effects long before any of them started getting sick. Joey King and Abby Quinn star as sisters in the based-on-true-events historical drama that Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter says fulfills a vital function with its dramatization of an important chapter in America s history of labor reform. Certainly 20 to 25 times. What do you think is the biggest misconception about critics? We re lucky to get paid for what we do. And that is also a truism.Yeah, we are lucky. We re not digging ditches, we re not doing manual labor, but we get paid to watch bad movies. I found out particularly when I started getting recognized from being on television and people would stop me and say, You got the best job in the world. I said, Well, it s a great job, but you know, some days it feels like a job. Then people s eyes glaze over. When you get paid to watch movies, no one wants to hear complaints, and I get that. What do you think makes a good movie? They say a smart person can hold two opposing thoughts in their mind at the same time. On the one hand, I m tempted to say originality and freshness, and yet there s some movies I like a lot, very good movies, that follow a ritual for a genre and wind up being really good. What is your preferred seat in a movie theater?Aisle seat, midway down the aisle. What is your favorite screening snack?Popcorn. No butter. When reviewing, do you go in cold? The only way I go. I actually studiously avoid reading or seeing anything about a movie. I don t even watch the trailers. The less I know about a movie going in, the better experience I have. Are you pro- or anti- note-taking?Neither. There are times when note-taking is crucial. I don t write lengthy reviews, so I find as long as I log-in either that night or the next morning when I get home, that does it for me.What is your personal record for most movies watched in a day?Seven. May I add with an asterisk: That was the day I discovered definitively that it s not the eyes that go first, it s the tush. What s your favorite film from your childhood?Oh gosh, so many. No one has ever asked me that.At age seven, my parents took me to see a film called The Golden Age of Comedy, which was a compilation of great moments from silent film comedies with Laurel and Hardy and Charlie Chaplin and others. I even remembered the theater where I saw it in Manhattan, and it literally changed my life.

This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering new films from the Academy Award nominated directors of Black Swan and American Hustle, and more. This WEEK S TOP STORYCHRIS EVANS TO RETURN TO THE MCU, BUT HOW?(Photo by Jay Maidment/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)When it comes to big-budget superhero movies, press releases will frequently keep some details hidden or vague in the interest of not spoiling the film s premise or story beats. This week s big news, however, was possibly a rare example of film speculation run amok. Let s start with the baseline story, which is that Chris Evans is expected to return for at least one more Marvel Studios film after ostensibly leaving the role of Captain America in Avengers: Endgame (Certified Fresh at 94%). Most sources reporting the announcement filled in the blanks to assume Evans was returning as Steve Rogers, but the original story didn t actually say that. The other possibility to consider is that Evans could be reprising his role as Fantastic Four member Johnny Storm, A.K.A. The Human Torch, possibly in a small cameo role. Kevin Feige confirmed just a few weeks ago that he is currently casting the Fantastic Four reboot, and we ve also heard recently about the next Spider-Man movie bringing in actors who played villains in the Spider-Man movies starring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. So, it seems plausible that alternate realities or a multiverse could be at play in the future of the MCU, and Chris Evans could have a cameo as someone other than Captain America (it would also explain why Evans tweeted News to me in response to the Captain America speculation). Having said that, if Evans is returning as Captain America, the obvious explanation would involve time travel. We already know from the Loki trailer and the casting of Jonathan Majors as the time-traveling villain Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania that the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will likely feature be very wibbly wobbly timey wimey. We ll just have to wait and see.Other Top Headlines1. ROBERT DE NIRO, RAMI MALEK, CHRIS ROCK, ZOE SALDANA, ANYA TAYLOR-JOY JOIN BIG ENSEMBLE(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Jason Mendez/Everett Collection)Director David O. Russell doesn t always work with big ensemble casts filled with famous names, but he definitely has done it a few times (American Hustle and I Heart Huckabees, for example). We still don t have a title for his next film yet, which has already signed Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and Tenet star John David Washington. The cast expanded twice this week, starting on Wednesday with the news that Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) and Zoe Saldana (Marvel s Gamora) had signed on. The very next day, the cast grew even bigger with the additions of Robert De Niro, Mike Myers, Alessandro Nivola, Timothy Olyphant, Andrea Riseborough, Chris Rock, Matthias Shoenaerts, Michael Shannon, and Anya-Taylor Joy (The Witch, The Queen s Gambit). The project is currently filming in Los Angeles, but details are being kept vague as to what it s actually about, except that Christian Bale and Margot Robbie are playing a doctor and a lawyer (not necessarily respectively). Whatever the movie ends up being titled, the end result will be distributed by 20th Century Studios, possibly as a late 2021 awards season release.2. DARREN ARONOFSKY CASTS BRENDAN FRASER AS THE WHALE (Photo by ©Lionsgate)After taking a few years following his most recent film, 2017 s mother! (Fresh at 68%), director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, Black Swan) appears to be getting closer to filming his next, an adaptation of the 2012 play The Whale by playwright Samuel D. Hunter. For the lead role, Aronofsky has cast Brendan Fraser to play a six hundred pound recluse hiding away from the world and slowly eating himself to death. A24 will be distributing The Whale, but the project does not currently have an announced production start date, so we don t have a firm idea of when it might be released, either.3. BEN AFFLECK JOINS DISNEY TO DIRECT KEEPER OF THE LOST CITIES (Photo by Universal Pictures)Author Shannon Messenger s 2012 children s fantasy novel Keeper of the Lost Cities has become a series of nine books (and counting), including a few New York Times bestsellers. Walt Disney Pictures obviously hasn t gotten out of the live-action fantasy movie business, but aside from something like Artemis Fowl, many of their films in that zone lately have been remakes of their animated classics. In that light, it makes total sense that Disney is moving forward with a Keeper of the Lost Cities movie, but what s more surprising is that it s Ben Affleck (Argo, Certified Fresh at 96%) who they ve hired to direct and co-write the adaptation. Studio-wise, the hiring of Ben Affleck is sort of a get for Disney, since he has worked quite a bit for Warner Bros. in recent years, including appearance in a few recent movies (and an upcoming HBO Max mini-series) as Batman.4. THE GOOD WIFE WRITER TAKING ON SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN BIOPIC (Photo by Robert Spencer/Getty Images)This coming August 25th will mark the third anniversary of the death of U.S. Senator John McCain, whose other accomplishments include surviving five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam and his two campaigns for president in 2000 and 2008. McCain s life has been detailed in a number of books, and this week, three of them (The Luckiest Man: Life with John McCain, Faith of My Fathers, and Worth the Fighting For) written by former McCain speechwriter and chief of staff Mark Salter were optioned by Stampede Ventures to be adapted into a bigraphical feature film. Stampede Ventures is also the production company currently developing Frosty the Snowman starring Jason Momoa and the Walter Cronkite drama Newsflash. Salter will also co-write the adaptation with producer Craig Turk (TV s The Good Wife, F.B.I.), with McCain s widow Cindy McCain acting as the project s executive producer. Faith of My Fathers was adapted as a TV movie in 2005 with John McCain portrayed by Shawn Hatosy, and Ed Harris also co-starred as McCain in the HBO film Game Change (Fresh at 67%).5. FIRST FEMALE DIRECTOR ALICE GUY-BLACHÉ GETTING HER OWN BIOPIC (Photo by Everett Collection)We recently started a new year, which also could have offered a good jumping off point for the #52FilmsbyWomen challenge, during which movie fans commit to watching at least one movie from a female director every week for a full year. Although male directors ha obviously dominated the industry for much of the last 120+ years, the very first female film director, Alice Guy-Blaché, made her debut in 1896 with the short film The Fairy of the Cabbages (note: in 1896, all movies were short films). The life of Alice Guy-Blaché is now being developed as a biopic from the same filmmakers who also adapted her life story as the 2018 documentary Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blaché (Certified Fresh at 95%). At the time a secretary for the Gaumont studio, Guy-Blaché was actually in the room when the Lumiere Brothers held their very first public screening in 1895, and within a year she was making her own movies. This eventually led her to America, where she directed over 1,000 short films during the Silent Film Era, working with stars like Lionel and Ethel Barrymore. Jodie Foster narrated the Be Natural documentary, but it s not yet known if she will also be involved with the biopic.6. CARDI B TO MAKE HER LEAD ACTING DEBUT WITH ASSISTED LIVING (Photo by Stephane Cardinale - Corbis/Getty Images)Rapper and pop star Cardi B has had a lot of success in her musical career, but it has been less than three years since her first studio album came out, and only 16 months since she made her feature film acting debut in Hustlers (Certified Fresh at 87%), starring Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu (admittedly, Cardi B s screentime in Hustlers is almost blink-and-you ll-miss-her). With all that in mind, she s ready to take on a lead role, as she is now signed to star in a Paramount Pictures comedy in the vein of classic funny films like Tootsie, Sister Act, and Mrs. Doubtfire called Assisted Living. Cardi B will play a small-time crook on the run from the law who finds refuge disguising herself as an elderly resident at her grandmother s nursing home. Assisted Living got its start at Paramount as a spec script by TV producer and writer Kay Oyegun (This is Us). Cardi B will also have a supporting role in Fast Furious 9 (5/28/2021, tentatively).7. ANNA PAQUIN JOINS SHAZAM! STAR IN FOOTBALL BIOPIC AMERICAN UNDERDOG (Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)One of the last films to have a wide release in the USA in 2020 before COVID-19 shut down theaters was the faith-based romance I Still Believe (Rotten at 51%), which still managed to earn back its production budget (.4 million against million). That film was the first from a new faith-based production company called Kingdom Story Company, and their second and third movies will both feature Shazam! star Zachary Levi. The teen drama Unbreakable Boy is currently filming, and production will soon start on the football biopic American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story. Zachary Levi will star as Warner, who overcame a series of hurdles (including having the bad luck of trying out for the QB job for the Green Bay Packers early in Brett Favre s career) to become the only person inducted into both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Arena Football Hall of Fame. The news this week is that True Blood and The Piano star Anna Paquin has also signed on to co-star as Brenda Warner, Kurt Warner s wife. American Underdog will be directed by Andrew and Jon Erwin (who also directed I Still Believe) and the film will be distributed by Lionsgate.8. MICHAEL PEÑA JOINS ROLAND EMMERICH S DISASTER MOVIE MOONFALL(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)After trying a few other genres (Anonymous, Stonewall), disaster movie specialist Roland Emmerich has been getting back to his roots more recently (Independence Day: Resurgence and the war movie Midway), and will especially do so with Moonfall, which is about exactly what it sounds like. The Moonfall ensemble cast will include Halle Berry, Charlie Plummer, Donald Sutherland, Patrick Wilson, John Bradley (Samwell Tarley from Game of Thrones), and until this week, Transformers star Stanley Tucci. Tucci had to drop out of the production due to recently imposed travel restrictions preventing him from flying from the U.K. to Canada where the film is being produced. Instead, Ant-Man MVP supporting actor Michael Peña has signed on for Tucci s role as a a wealthy car dealer who is married to the ex-wife of Patrick Wilson s character. Presumably, some of those used cars are about to get demolished by some big old moon rocks.9. ARMIE HAMMER DROPS OUT OF J.LO ROMCOM SHOTGUN WEDDING (Photo by Daniel Smith/Warner Bros.)Armie Hammer became the focus of an online controversy this week, the nature of which we won t get into. The news came out just before Hammer was about to spend four months in the Dominican Republic filming the romantic comedy Shotgun Wedding with Jennifer Lopez, but the production will now need to recast the role, as he has dropped out. This will actually be the second time the role will be recast, as it was originally supposed to be played by Ryan Reynolds (who is still executive producing Shotgun Wedding). Lopez and whoever-replaces-Armie-Hammer will star in Shotgun Wedding as a couple having a destination wedding in the Caribbean who then begin to get cold feet, just as everybody in the wedding party also gets taken hostage. Shotgun Wedding will be directed by Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect, Sisters) from a screenplay by Liz Meriwether (No Strings Attached) and Mark Hammer (Two Night Stand), who as far as we can tell, isn t related to Armie Hammer. On an Apple device? ogical ones. Family comes in all shapes and forms, and I think that s beautifully portrayed in this story. Eve, who plays Bly Manor gardener Jamie, agrees: I think it s the connection that they all need. And they re all hoping for it, but don t realize they need it. It creeps up on them that they are a part of this [sort of] union they had no idea they were lacking. And that kind of completes them as human beings in a way. 3. There s a Lot Going On Behind Peter s Steely Gaze(Photo by EIKE SCHROTER/NETFLIX © 2020)One of the more secretive characters in the season is Peter Quint, played by Jackson-Cohen, whose performance in Hill House as the Crains damaged, drug-addicted son/brother Luke brought the actor wide acclaim. The character he plays in Bly Manor is vastly different.Described in Vanity Fair recently as a calculated business associate of the uncle s who tends to take whatever he wants from Bly Manor, regardless of permission, Peter was taken directly from The Turn of the Screw. He s still a man of mystery, however. When pressed about Peter s steely-eyed gaze in the show s official trailer, Jackson-Cohen sidestepped spoilers about his character and his relationship with Dani to reveal what makes his character s countenance so engaging. I was born looking like that, Jackson-Cohen joked, adding, Peter is a really, really interesting character — there are so many sides to him. You [eventually] get to see an awful lot more of where he s from, and why he s the way he is — I m really excited. 4. Bly Manor Was Just as Grand as It Looks on Screen (Photo by EIKE SCHROTER/NETFLIX © 2020)The Haunting of Hill House set the bar high for set design, especially considering what Flanagan and his crew accomplished in the installment s sixth episode, Two Storms. But given that the new series takes place in a completely new era and location, we asked just how grandiose and detailed the Bly Manor set was. The sets were absolutely [stunning], Eve, who plays gardener Jamie, said. We had the ground floor in one studio and the top floor in another studio and outside was a separate place, completely. But it certainly was still big that you felt the kind of the grandness of the house as you were walking through it. Miller, who appears as housekeeper Mrs. Grose, agreed, quoting one of this season s catchphrases: It really was perfectly splendid. The little details that we don t always get to see on screen — the art department did such an amazing job. The littlest of things that I recognized from my own childhood that were around in the ’80s, as well, the artwork, the furniture it was such a tactile set, and you just wanted to touch everything and open drawers and cabinets — and there were things in them! It was just a brilliant, great set. 5. The Series Is Too Scary for Amelie Bea Smith and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth To Watch(Photo by EIKE SCHROTER/NETFLIX © 2020)Amelie Bea Smith, best known as the voice of the titular character in animated hit Peppa Pig, and newcomer Benjamin Evan Ainsworth play the young siblings and were both thrilled when they learned they booked the roles. It was just one scene. It was one self-tape that we had to do, Ainsworth explained. There wasn t a callback or anything. Just straight to offer, which is so crazy and amazing. So that night, I was just so chuffed with myself and happy, and we were all celebrating, so it was really fun. As excited as the young actors were in booking these roles, they don t fall into Bly Manor s target demographic. Smith is just nine years old, and Ainsworth is a couple of years older. I think I m allowed to watch little bits of it, but I think I d be terrified watching some of it, because I don t watch many scary movies, the young actress said. It s not my cup of tea. The same is true for Ainsworth: I am so scared by scary movies. So I don t think I ll be allowed to watch them. [I was even] creeped out on set. 6. The Dolls Hold the Keys to Bly Manor s Secrets(Photo by EIKE SCHROTER/NETFLIX © 2020)Flanagan has previously talked about Bly Manor s dolls, telling Vanity Fair, I think for kids, it’s about control. Kids have such little agency. Dolls provide that. But there’s also a darker side to it. Ownership, claiming someone, ceasing to look at them as a human, and instead, looking at them as an object, as a doll…we can draw lines to all sorts of toxic romantic relationships that way, and get into gender politics and the objectification of women in particular by this genre.”Asked about the odd little toys in the series and the giant dollhouse she got to play with, Smith revealed their bigger purpose in the series: They re just really amazing little dolls. But the dollhouse, itself, is a clue to the whole house. It has lots of secrets and Flora uses it to protect everybody. 7. Mike Flanagan Has Built a Soul Family of His OwnLook at Flanagan s work over the past decade, and you ll see some faces pop up again and again. One example is his professional partnership with Thomas, who, aside from appearing in Bly Manor as estranged uncle Henry Wingrave, has played young Hugh Crain in The Haunting of Hill House, Tom in Netflix s Gerald s Game, and took on the iconic role of Jack Torrance in the big-screen adaptation of Doctor Sleep that Flanagan wrote and directed based Stephen King s sequel to The Shining.Flanagan s tendency to reuse talent on multiple projects is reminiscent of a theater troupe or a stage family, which lines up perfectly with the ongoing familial component featured throughout his work. It s beneficial because you re already comfortable, Thomas said. There s a trust there in the sense that he knows what I can do. I know how he works, and it s a very comfortable way to work, actually, as an actor. A lot of times, getting to know you might stretch into a whole shoot, in terms of director-actor relations. It s a really good feeling. And it s nice to kind of build a friendship with the people that you re working with. When you see each other again at work, it s like seeing your own family at the office. The Haunting of Bly Manor launches on Friday, October 9, on Netflix.Correction: The quote It was just one scene. It was one self-tape that we had to do previously attributed to Smith has been corrected to be attributed to Ainsworth. On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.
“I will show you terror in a handful of dust” was the tagline DC Comics used to introduce its readers to The Sandman in 1988. Like Swamp Thing before it, it was a reinvention of a relatively obscure DC character by an up-and-coming British talent – in this case, writer Neil Gaiman. Also like Swamp Thing, it was pitched as a horror title, but grew into so much more. The series became a massive success with readers outside the comic book marketplace and proved arty comics could work right alongside the superheroes. Its ideas, scope, and characters are also perfect for television adaptation, but it took a long time for the rights-holders to make that realization. As Gaiman recalls, he was first asked about adapting The Sandman into a film in 1991 and – barring a long extension of the worldwide pandemic – a Sandman television series will finally debut on Netflix 30 years later. Why did it take so long? Let’s consider everything we know about The Sandman television series and unravel the story of its long gestation.[Updated on 9/25/21]The Story Basics: Meet Morpheus and the Gang (Photo by DC Comics)The Sandman tells the tale of Morpheus – a.k.a. Dream of the Endless – an impossibly old being who is also the living personification of dreams. He lives in a realm called, appropriately enough, The Dreaming, where he tends to the REM state of being all over the universe; of course, this means he spends a lot of time near Earth, courting gods, inspiring fools to become authors, and occasionally arousing waking terrors. As the series begins, in 1916, an exhausted Morpheus is captured by an immortality-seeking magus. He eventually escapes in 1989 and sets out to put his broken kingdom back in order. From there, the series expands into a group of novels detailing Morpheus s long-term plan to make up for past misdeeds and escape from his other confinement – which we won’t spoil as it is a key element of the series. In each major story, we also meet characters like Rose Walker, the immortal Hob Gadling, the Dreaming s wisecracking janitor Mervyn Pumpkinhead, Matthew the Raven, the crafty Thessaly, and Lucifer Morningstar – all of whom are as fascinating as Morpheus himself. We also learn about the troubles within Morpheus family, the Endless. Each is the personification of some essential concept – Destiny, Death, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium (formerly Delight) – with personalities to match. Well, except for Death and maybe one other, but that is another of the series great surprises. Though designed as a horror title at launch, the series ends as a grand exploration of myths, storytelling, and being true to oneself, beautifully rendered by artists like Sam Keith, Jill Thompson, P. Craig Russell, Charles Vess, and Mike Allred.Naturally, it has been almost impossible for Hollywood to adapt it.False Starts: From Harry Potter–like Franchise to HBO Series(Photo by Mike Marsland/WireImage)After Gaiman resisted the 1991 inquiry about a film, Warner Bros. would begin developing a Sandman feature four or five years later. The first attempt boasted director Roger Avary (The Rules of Attraction) and writers Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean). Reportedly, the script reworked elements from the first two major storylines, Preludes Nocturnes and The Doll s House, into one plot. In subsequent years, Gaiman was complimentary about the script, but Superman Returns producer Jon Peters fired Avary after the two could not find a common creative vision.Peters continued to develop the project with other writers. A 1998 draft by William Farmer (who received story credit on Jonah Hex) was leaked to Ain’t It Cool News – one of the site s earliest big scoops. As AICN reported, the script reworked Morpheus into a slasher movie villain, set up a new protagonist, and recast Lucifer as Morpheus’ brother. The action-heavy plot also involved the then-upcoming turn of the millennium, which would’ve immediately dated the project had it gone forward. To read about it now, it sounds oddly similar to the eventual Constantine feature starring Keanu Reeves and the liberties it took with its source material. (Which many of us didn t mind at all.)Gaiman would remember it as “not only the worst Sandman script I ve ever seen, but quite easily the worst script I ve ever read,” and told fans at a San Diego Comic-Con 2007 event that he would “rather see no Sandman movie made than a bad Sandman movie.” Reality seemed to take Gaiman s advice as Peters project came to naught. In 2014, a new version of the project emerged with producer David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight), actor-director-producer Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gaiman, and writer Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials). Intended to be separate from the emerging universe of the DC films, The Sandman was to be released by New Line Cinema under the Vertigo label seen at the start of V for Vendetta. It was hoped the film would inspire several sequels and, perhaps, a Harry Potter–sized franchise. In March 2016, Eric Heisserer (Arrival) signed on to rewrite Thorne’s draft, but soon after, Gordon-Levitt left the project citing creative differences – granted, it was never clear if he was going to play the title role or just serve as a producer. Heisserer turned in his script in November of that year, but also left the production, suggesting The Sandman should be an HBO series. As it happens, an attempt to do just that also occurred.Logan’s James Mangold pitched a Sandman series to HBO sometime in 2010. It was not successful, obviously, but it led to Warner Bros. Television developing a Sandman TV show concurrently with the film. Supernatural’s Eric Kripke pitched a concept, but Gaiman later revealed it wasn’t quite right. And with the Goyer production looking like it was going to happen, WBTV backed off the show.Which only goes to show how much timing matters. The Sandman could never be a film series, and television was simply not prepared for it until the streaming age, when things finally came together.Netflix Steps In With an 11-Episode Commitment and Wonder Woman Talent(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)In June 2019, Netflix announced it was developing The Sandman as a television series. Wonder Woman screenwriter Allan Heinberg (pictured above with The Catch actress Sonya Walger) will serve as the showrunner and Gaiman as a producer. When asked on Twitter about his level of involvement in the series, the whimsical author said, “Much more than American Gods. Less than Good Omens. The former is the troubled Starz adaptation of his 2001 novel – known more for drama behind the scenes than what s going on onscreen – the latter is the Amazon series based on the novel he co-wrote with the late Terry Pratchett. Gaiman ultimately served as that program’s showrunner and is apparently in no hurry to take on that amount of responsibility again. Goyer is still on board as a producer and all three worked on the pilot script. Also, unlike previous attempts to bring The Sandman to the screen, the show has an 11-episode commitment.Who Is in the Cast? (Photo by Netflix)Like most of the various would-be Sandman adaptations, the first season will adapt “Preludes Nocturnes,” and, according to Gaiman, “a little bit more.” We assume this means at least one episode will directly adapt issue #8, “The Sound of Her Wings,” which introduced Morpheus’ sister, Death, into the story. But since the comic delighted in non-linear storytelling, it is possible other episodes in the season will feature (seemingly) standalone tales of people coming into contact with Morpheus or one of his subjects. An entirely animated episode based on issue #18, “A Dream of A Thousand Cats,” would be an amazing thing to watch. We also imagine Gaiman s little bit more will include the introduction of The Corinthian; a wayward and murderous dream who becomes the series first major antagonist, but does not appear until the comic book s second storyline. In January 2021, Netflix announced the first of the cast and their roles:• TOM STURRIDGE is DREAM, Lord of the Dreaming• GWENDOLINE CHRISTIE is LUCIFER, Ruler of Hell• VIVIENNE ACHEAMPONG is LUCIENNE, chief librarian and trusted guardian of Dream’s realm• BOYD HOLBROOK is THE CORINTHIAN, an escaped nightmare who wishes to taste all that the world has in store• CHARLES DANCE is RODERICK BURGESS, Charlatan, blackmailer and magician• ASIM CHAUDHRY is ABEL and SANJEEV BHASKAR is CAIN, the first victim and the first predator, residents and loyal subjects of the Dream Realm.(Photo by Netflix)In May 2021, Netflix announced a new batch of cast members, including Jenna Coleman, Stephen Fry, Patton Oswalt, David Thewlis, and
This week s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news (the stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering such titles as Halloween Kills, the next Spider-Man, and the Treasure Island remake. This WEEK S TOP STORYJORDAN PEELE SIGNS AMBITIOUS NEW DEAL WITH UNIVERSAL PICTURES(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Universal Pictures served as the distributor for both Jordan Peele s 2017 breakout psychological thriller Get Out (Certified Fresh at 98%) and this year s slasher film Us (Certified Fresh at 93%). This week, Universal solidified their relationship with Peele with a five-year deal with his Monkeypaw Productions that ensures they will release all of his films. This new deal includes two features that Peele himself will write and direct within those five years, but no details have been revealed about either. In addition to this new deal with Universal Pictures, Jordan Peele is also still producing The Twilight Zone for CBS, the upcoming series Lovecraft Country, and next summer s remake of Candyman (6/12/2020).Other Top Headlines1. THIS WEEK IN TOM HOLLAND: SPIDER-MAN 3 AND UNCHARTED FIND DIRECTORS(Photo by Jon Kopaloff/Getty Images)Last week s biggest news was all about the new deal between Disney and Sony for Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige to remain involved in future Spider-Man movies starring Tom Holland. That news, however, also broke on Friday afternoon, and the story continued to develop over the weekend after last week s Ketchup column ran. In the seven days since, that movie, and another Tom Holland project, both received updates. Jon Watts, who directed both Spider-Man: Homecoming (Certified Fresh at 92%) and this year s Spider-Man: Far from Home (Certified Fresh at 90%) is now in talks with Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures to return for a third installment (7/16/2021). It s not yet known which villain will appear in the next Spider-Man, but the final scenes of Far from Home suggest it could be a J. Jonah Jameson-related threat, like the Scorpion or the Spider-Slayer robots. In related news, it was also revealed that Tom Holland himself played an integral behind-the-scenes role in making the new deal possible. In addition to the third Spider-Man scheduled for the summer of 2021 (7/16/2021), Holland also remains attached to star in Sony s video game adaptation Uncharted (12/18/2020). That project has gone through a few directors now, but this week, we learned Travis Knight (Bumblebee, Kubo and the Two Strings) is now in talks to take it on.2. THE ORIGINAL HALLOWEEN NURSE RETURNING FOR 2020 S HALLOWEEN KILLS (Photo by Universal courtesy Everett Collection)Last year s soft reboot of Halloween (Certified Fresh at 79%) went a long way to disregard most of the sequels and establish itself as a direct follow-up to the original film, including the return of Jamie Lee Curtis but without the details established in later films. As the next two planned movies get closer to being filmed back to back (Halloween Kills on 10/16/2020 and Halloween Ends on 10/15/2021), the casting news has focused on the returns of other characters from the first movie, including the casting of Anthony Michael Hall as the adult Tommy Doyle, who was the kid Laurie Strode was originally babysitting. We can also now report that Nancy Stephens, who played Nurse Marion Chambers in the first Halloween, will also return for Halloween Kills. Nurse Marion had a crucial role in the original Halloween, as it was her car that Michael Myers stole as part of his escape from the Smith s Grove Sanitarium. (She also had a key role in Halloween 2, but these new films act like that movie never happened.)3. DISNEY ANIMATION DEVELOPING FOUR NEW PROJECTS AS PART OF NEW INITIATIVE (Photo by Walt Disney Studios)The next movie from Disney Animation Studios is going to be this December s sequel, Frozen II, but it appears that the studio s future will be mostly original stories for at least the next few years. (Having said that, the only confirmed title past Frozen II is next year s Raya and the Last Dragon, scheduled for 11/25/2020.) This week, Disney confirmed that they are now developing not one but four new animation projects as part of the studio s commitment to diversity and inclusion. The four directors now working on these untitled Disney Animation projects are Carlos Lopez Estrada (Blindspotting, Certified Fresh at 94%); Suzi Yoonessi (Unlovable, Fresh at 81%); Josie Trinidad (credited as a story writer on Zootopia); and Marc Smith (a longtime animator who worked on movies like Big Hero 6 and Zootopia). No premises have been revealed about these four projects, including whether any of them might be adapted from existing classic stories.4. CLINT EASTWOOD S RICHARD JEWELL TO BE RELEASED JUST SIX MONTHS AFTER FILMING STARTED (Photo by Keith Bernstein/Warner Bros.)Clint Eastwood is one of those directors who can get movies produced very quickly. This week s news, however, is one of the most surprising examples of his expediency. After a long development phase (which included a time when Jonah Hill might have starred, before his recent weight loss), Eastwood started filming Richard Jewell, about the 1996 bombing at the Atlanta Olympic Games, in June of this year. The start date was June 14, 2019, which is one day shy of six months before the December 13, 2019 release date that Warner Bros announced for the film this week. Paul Walter Hauser, who was arguably the breakout star of I, Tonya, will star as Richard Jewell when it s released, up against Jumanji: The Next Level and the remake of Black Christmas (which was also produced really quickly this year). Warner Bros. also released the first trailer for the film this week, which will be attached in many theaters to Joker.5. PIPPI LONGSTOCKING TO BE REBOOTED BY PADDINGTON PRODUCERS (Photo by ©G.G. Communications courtesy Everett Collection)Although Swedish author Astrid Lindgren s original Pippi Longstocking books were originally published from 1945 to 1948, the super strong female children s book character has had a decades-long legacy that has included multiple movies and TV shows. Having said that, the mainstream influence of Pippi Longstocking in the USA has been relatively thin for decades, and hasn t been updated for over 20 years. That appears likely to change relatively soon with the news this week that a new Pippi Longstocking movie is now being developed by the producers of Paddington (Certified Fresh at 97%) and its even better-received sequel (Certified Fresh at 100%).6. WONDER STORY TO BE CONTINUED WITH WORLD WAR II PREQUEL WHITE BIRD (Photo by Dale Robinette /© Lionsgate)Children s author R.J. Palacio had something of a runaway hit with her 2012 novel Wonder, which was then adapted in 2017 as a well-received live action movie (Certified Fresh at 85%) starring Jacob Tremblay and Julia Roberts. This week, Lionsgate picked up the feature film rights to Palacio s upcoming graphic novel called White Bird: A Wonder Story. That book will tell the World War II story of a young Jewish girl in Nazi-occupied France who would go on to become the grandmother of Julian, the central character of Wonder. It is not yet known if White Bird will be adapted as live action (like Wonder) or in animation in the style of the graphic novel.7. TREASURE ISLAND TO BE REBOOTED BY HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON DIRECTOR (Photo by Buena Vista Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)It was just last week that we learned that the Micronauts adaptation (6/4/2021) will be directed by Dean DeBlois, who spent most of the last ten years working on the various How to Train Your Dragon animated movies. Now that the How to Train Your Dragon franchise is finished, DeBlois agents are apparently working double-time to find him new projects, because there s another one this week. Universal Pictures and Mandeville Films (Beauty and the Beast, Warm Bodies) are now developing a new adaptation of the classic pirate novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, which was most famously adapted as a live-action Walt Disney film in 1950 (Fresh at 100%). Dean DeBlois is reportedly attached to direct the new film, which is being adapted by screenwriter Evan Spiliotopolous (co-writer of Beauty and the Beast and The Huntsman: Winter s War). With Micronauts already scheduled for 2021, Treasure Island will probably be released no sooner than 2022.8. SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK DIRECTOR SET FOR DRACULA SPINOFF (Photo by Columbia Pictures)For trivia fans, the Demeter has long been a little gem to keep in one s back pocket, as it is the name of the deserted ship on which Count Dracula sails to England from Transylvania in Bram Stoker s original 1897 novel. Fans of movie development news might also recognize that ship s name as part of Last Voyage of the Demeter, a long-in-development (since 2001) horror film about the on-board massacre as Dracula and his vampire cohorts killed the ship s sailors on their way to England. Basically, Last Voyage of the Demeter attempts to fill in one of the story beats that Bram Stoker left as an untold spooky side-story. We can now report that Norwegian director André Øvredal (Trollhunter, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark) is now in talks to direct The Last Voyage of the Demeter. At one point, Viggo Mortensen was attached to star in the film as the Demeter s captain, but it s not yet known if he is still attached nearly 10 years later.9. BORAT CO-WRITER WORKING ON HOME ALONE REBOOT FOR DISNEY+(Photo by 20th Century Fox)The growth and popularity of streaming services continue to pose an interesting challenge for how they re reported on (are they movies, are they TV, or are they something completely unrelated?), but when the streaming feature is intriguing enough, we still report on them here from time to time. Netflix is obviously the big player in this realm, but the Disney+ streaming app (which launches next month) is also looming out there with some very promising projects. In August, Disney CEO Bob Iger mentioned several potential Disney+ feature films, and this week, one of those was confirmed to be moving forward in development. Borat co-writer Dan Mazer is now working on adapting the original Home Alone (starring Macaulay Culkin) as a new children s feature film for the Disney+ streaming app. The reboot is expected to be a twist on the original premise, as the young boy will now be the thief who has stolen something from a married couple (and apparently, no adult thieves are involved this time around). It s not yet known who Disney will cast as the married couple.Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week.

Initially, Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were hired for the project, but in October 2019 it was announced that franchise vet Ted Elliott and Chernobyl writer Craig Mazin were taking over writing duties. No word on cast and director or on whether Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) will be a part of the new story.New Pirates of the Caribbean MovieDirector: TBDStarring: Margot RobbieThe above Pirates film should not be confused with the one set to star Margot Robbie. This film, which The Hollywood Reporter says will be penned by Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson, will reportedly be female-fronted and be its own story that will introduce new characters beyond those already part of Jack Sparrow s orbit.29 DatesDirector: Richard WongStarring: TBDThis young adult rom-com, which is based on the Melissa de la Cruz novel, will appear on Disney+. While no cast or writer has been announced, we know that this story centers on a 16-year-old Korean exchange student who meets a host of eligible bachelors from around the globe. It has been compared to author Jenny Han’s To All The Boys I ve Loved Before series.© Walt Disney Studios Motion PicturesHunchbackDirector: TBDStarring: TBDM. So is actor Josh Gad but so far just as a producer, even though he did Tweet a fun image of himself outside of the famous French cathedral.© Walt Disney Studios Motion PicturesJungle Book 2Director: Jon FavreauStarring: TBDJungle Book writer Justin Marks told Rotten Tomatoes that he and Favreau co-wrote the sequel to their blockbuster film in December 2017, but they had to wait until the director finished work on the revival of The Lion King before they started production. And while Neel Sethi, who starred as Mowgli in the 2016 film, has said that he s down to return, Marks stressed that the character has aged along with the young actor. Jon and I saw The Jungle Book story as a coming-of-age story and the second movie continues in that direction, Marks says. Really, if it’s done right, it should break some hearts with where it goes.” He added that the sequel will pull in more animal characters from author Rudyard Kipling s book because (duh) there’s such a wealth of characters in that world.” © Walt Disney PicturesLilo StitchDirector: Jon M. ChuStarring: TBDAnother fan-favorite Disney film to ride the waves of the live-action/CG trend, this upcoming adaptation of the Hawaiian-set film about friendship and family is being produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of the live-action Aladdin. No cast or has been announced, but rising star Mike Van Waes is reportedly writing the script and Variety reported in 2020 that Crazy Rich Asians Jon M. Chu was in talks to direct.Marvel StudiosCaptain America 4Director: TBDStarring: TBDThe Hollywood Reporter broke the news in 2021 that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series showrunner Malcolm Spellman was working with Dalan Musson to develop a script for a fourth Captain America movie. While no director or casting has been announced, it s to be assumed that Falcon co-star Anthony Mackie will appear in the film. Rick Famuyiwa SadéDirector: TBDStarring: TBDOne of the handful of original properties in the works for Disney, this live-action fairytale centers on an African princess who must accept her newly discovered magical powers and protect her kingdom when its threatened by a mysterious evil force. Ola Shokunbi and Lindsey Reed Palmer are writing the script and Dope director Rick Famuyiwa is one of the producers, but a director and cast have not been named. The film was announced a few months after Disney saw both massive success for its Marvel film, Black Panther, and allegations of whitewashing its The Princess and the Frog heroine, Princess Tiana, in a promo for its animated film, Ralph Breaks the Internet. (The character was redrawn for the film’s release). © Buena Vista Pictures/courtesy Everett CollectionSister Act 3Director: TBDStarring: Whoopi GoldbergAnother classic IP that’s getting a modern rendition, the third chapter in the Sister Act franchise is written by Regina Hicks (HBO’s Insecure) and Karin Gist (Fox’s Star) and will air on streaming service Disney+. Plot and cast details are scarce, but it was confirmed during The Walt Disney Company s December 2020 investors day that original star Whoopi Goldberg would return to star and produce and that Tyler Perry was also producing.Starlight (20th Century Studios)Director: Joe CornishStarring: TBDDeadline reported in 2021 that Attack the Block s Joe Cornish would be writing and adapting a film based on the Mark Millar comic. The article explains that the plot centers on a space hero who saved the universe 35 years ago but when he came back to Earth, no one believed his fantastic stories. He married, had kids and settled into old age. But then his old rocket ship shows up and he is called back for one fantastic adventure. According to the article, this film will be a completely different take on the project than the 2003 flop. It was later reported that Lakeith Stanfield and Tiffany Haddish would star in the film. It was recently announced Owen Wilson and Rosario Dawson would be joining them.© Walt Disney PicturesThe Sword in the StoneDirector: Juan Carlos FresnadilloStarring: TBDAnother live-action version of an animated Disney favorite, this film is also awaiting a release date on the Disney+ streaming platform. It was announced during the December 2020 The Walt Disney Company investors day that Tom Hanks would star as woodworker Geppetto. In March 2021, it was announced that Benjamin Evan Ainsworth would play the title character, Cynthia Erivo would play the Blue Fairy, Keegan-Michael Key would play Honest John, and that Joseph Gordon-Levitt would play Jiminy Cricket. The film will air on Disney+.© Walt Disney PicturesShrunkDirector: Joe JohnstonStarring: Josh Gad, Rick MoranisLooks like we re getting the gang back together again. 1997 Special Edition. The music and the muppet-ness of the original band give a certain authenticity even as it remains one of the cheesiest things in the Original Trilogy.31. Tarkin Takes Credit for Krennic’s Work – Rogue OneOrson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) is a wonderful view into the way the Empire truly operated. Dogged and relentless, he proves the Death Star s main weapon will work after years of delays only to see Grand Moff Tarkin (a CGI Peter Cushing) assume command and take the credit. His composure melts as he screams about “my work” to an unimpressed gaggle of moffs and generals. It might be Mendelson’s talent for playing officious middle managers, but Krennic became one of our favorite Imps in this moment.30. Bail Organa Gets Involved – Revenge of the SithFrom his appearance in Attack of the Clones, Bail Organa (Jimmy Smitts) is a nameless anomaly in a film comprised of awkward introductions. But he makes his mark in RotS by investigating a fire at the Jedi Temple. In doing so, he becomes a leading figure in the Rebellion and the adoptive father of one of its most important heroes. His actions prove to be quietly heroic, but have far reaching effects.29. Leia Strangles Jabba the Hutt – Return of the Jedi(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Among the chaos Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) sowed to rescue Han from Jabba the Hutt, he left dealing with the gangster to the capable hands of Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher). In using the very chain Jabba employed to make her his pet, she made a statement at least one member of Jabba’s retinue understood before the end. Never shy to make statements, it is one of Leia’s most impressive and direct scenes of action in the Original Trilogy.28. Han Fails To Fool The Empire – Star WarsThough known for his swagger, Han’s dopiness keeps him from being an insufferable character. And this may be the greatest example of his dopiness getting the best of him. Thanks to his time in the Imperial Army, he should know the proper procedure to keep the Imps at bay during the jailbreak, but the ruse collapses thanks to a hasty “how are you?” It’s funny, character-revealing, and a great way to ratchet up the tension.27. Leia Senses Luke Is In Trouble – The Empire Strikes BackWhile it is clear Lucas decided to make them siblings after Empire was released, it is almost impossible to read this late moment in the film as anything but foreshadowing of Luke and Leia’s true relationship. If you can see it another way, it reveals Leia as someone who may not be Force-sensitive, but attuned enough to receive Luke’s telepathic call. Or, as it now text, she is also strong in the Force, but untrained. In any of these readings, it is a powerful moment for Leia with a nice slice of comedy at the end thanks to Lando Calrissian’s (Billy Dee Williams) reaction to her orders.26. Palpatine vs Yoda – Revenge of the Sith(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)The better of the Prequel Trilogy’s two Yoda battles, this one derives its power from actor Ian McDiarmid going full cackling Republic serial villain. He has the high ground and relishes it with each laugh and each Force-push of a delegate conveyance. The symbolism of Palpatine smashing the Senate might be a little too on the nose, but he’s not worried about subtlety here. He’s won, which also makes Yoda’s retreat surprisingly poignant and their fight all the more important.25. “We Would Be Honored If You Would Join Us.” – The Empire Strikes BackIn a film stuffed with reversals, Darth Vader’s (voiced by James Earl Jones) dinner date with Leia, Han, and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) is one of the best. Lando’s duplicity is revealed. Boba Fett proves Han cannot escape his grasp. And in their only direct confrontation, Han learns he’s definitely no match for a Sith Lord. It’s quick, it’s punctuated by blaster fire and Chewie’s growls, and it’s just a great scene.24. R2-D2 Reactivates The Hyperdrive – The Empire Strikes BackThroughout most of the saga, astromech droid R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) has had plenty of chances to save his humanoid friends. Without him, the Naboo delegation would never have made it to Tatooine. But this may be his most heroic action because of the stakes involved and C-3PO s (Anthony Daniels) nagging about his leg. Without R2 reconnecting one cable, the history of the galaxy might be very different.23. Luke Finds Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru’s Remains – Star Wars(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)The most gruesome scene in Star Wars overall is also one of its most pivotal. According to the principles of screenwriting, Luke has refused the call to action. He needs a powerful motivator to accept the call and go on his adventure. In this case, it is the sight of his uncle and aunt’s charred remains among the blasted ruins of their homestead. It is a shocking moment worthy of its unsettling imagery. Short of a bloody arm a few minutes later, Star Wars films would never do something this graphic again.22. Rey Pulls The Lightsaber Through The Air – The Force AwakensIn a film filled with fan wish-fulfillment, this may be most fans’ fondest – to reach out with the Force, pull a lightsaber through the air, activate it, and hold their own against a Sith Lord. Yes, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) may not be a true Sith – and Rey (Daisy Ridley) is no Jedi here – but that’s beside the point. This is a moment every Star Wars fan has played out in their backyard, schoolyard, or imagination, and it suddenly lives inside a Star Wars movie.21. Boba Fett’s Entrance – The Empire Strikes Back“No disintegrations.” With this directive from Vader, bounty hunter Boba Fett became Star Wars’s greatest man of mystery. Surrounded by intriguing bounty hunters like IG-88, Bossk, and Zuckuss, Fett stood out – and not just because he was an early release Empire action figure. His response, “As you wish,” suggests disintegrations have been a problem in the past, or something Vader specifically hired Fett to do previously. Either way, it gave Fett a mystique so powerful, it rivals Vader’s.20. Vader Promotes Piett To Admiral – The Empire Strikes Back(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Many fan theories online suggest Admiral Ozzel (Michael Sheard) was revealed as an Alliance spy as a way to explain his gross negligence in the search for Luke. But whether an enemy saboteur or a grossly incompetent Imp who peter-principled his way to the admiralty, his death is both hilarious and disturbing thanks to the reaction of his junior officer, Captain Piett (Kenneth Colley), who Vader immediately elevates to command the fleet. We like to imagine Piett spent his entire career waiting for his superiors to anger Vader so he could accept these quick promotions. Call it the Piett Principle.19. Vader Attempts To Board The Tantive IV – Rogue OneVader as Jason Voorhies. A late addition to the film during its infamous reshoots, Vader’s attempt to secure the Death Star plans from the Rebels as they raced to the blockade runner Tantive IV is the best example of what the Sith Lord looked like to rank-and-file members of the Alliance. He’s a horror movie slasher with a laser sword and magic powers. But most importantly, he’s unstoppable. Consequently, it is one of the most effective scenes in the film despite the lack of the entire main cast.18. Obi-Wan’s Debut – Star WarsFirst, he convinces the Tusken Raiders that a Krayt Dragon is nearby. Then he attends to the unconscious Luke. When R2-D2 comes out of the shadows to investigate, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) removes his hood and offers a warm, bemused “Well, hello there.” With each expansion of the character’s past, this moment – and the following scene with Luke – takes on more meaning, but these three words offer so much of the character: his wisdom, his playfulness, and the prototype image of a Jedi we use to this day.17. Vader Force-Chokes General Motti – Star Wars(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)While Obi-Wan made the Force sound amazing a few scenes earlier, Vader gave it its visceral power with this moment. As Lucas would later claim, this is Vader’s lowest point. He is below Tarkin in the Imperial power structure and faces a gaggle of disbelieving generals like Motti (Richard LeParmentier), who mocks the Sith Lord’s “sad devotion” to the Force with every muscle in his face. Vader chokes him from afar and the soundtrack offers a haunting rumble. And in that moment, every kid wanted to wield the power of the Force.16. Lando’s Introduction – The Empire Strikes BackFeigning anger at the arrival of the Millennium Falcon in Cloud City proves a key thing about Lando Calrissian: he is a shrewd sabacc player. It makes Han feel at home and sets up Lando s later betrayal when Vader reveals himself to the rebels. But it also reveals Lando’s playful side. More than any other character in the Original Trilogy, he wants to have fun. Even if he has to sell out a friend, he will find a way enjoy it. Well, at least until the deal is altered.15. Obi-Wan vs. Darth Maul – The Phantom MenaceAs the first glimpse of Jedi and Sith in a live-action duel, this was one of The Phantom Menace’s defining sequences. Maul (Ray Park) meets his match in Ewan McGregor s Padawan, who uses his anger to counter the Sith Lord. But Maul is ultimately unprepared for Obi-Wan’s awareness of the environment around him – the “Living Force” Qui-Gonn wanted him to be mindful of at the start of the film. Between the great choreography and the story point, it proves to be one of the best fights in the whole series.14. Luke Brushes Dust Off His Robe – The Last Jedi(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)For all the might the Force gives a Jedi, there was always the suspicion a true master could defeat his enemy with just a few gestures. This is that moment for Master Jedi Luke Skywalker. The boy who sought swashbuckling adventure was always destined for the sort of composure and interior strength required for this sickest of burns. It puts his opponent off his footing and allows the Resistance to escape – the real victory to be found in this confrontation.13. “Judge Me By My Size, Will You?” – The Empire Strikes BackYoda’s view of the Force was proof there was more to it than lifting rocks. But it would take this dramatic moment, in which the Jedi Master raises Luke’s X-Wing from the muck, to prove the energy field binding the universe defies all underlying perceptions about reality. A hyperdrive-capable snub fighter is no heavier than a pebble to one truly allied with the Force. That this lesson is offered by one of Star Wars’s smallest characters gives this line of thinking its exclamation point.12. “This Is How Liberty Dies To Thunderous Applause” – Revenge of the SithPalpatine’s first public appearance as Emperor is filled with strange moments. He looks like bleached hamburger. He calls out the Jedi as would-be usurpers. He announces the Republic will be “reorganized” into the First Galactic Empire in lieu of a complete change in the government. And he promises a more “secure society.” Despite the odd framing and phrasing, it is a genuinely chilling moment punctuated by Padme’s comment: a warning of just how easily republics can fall.11. “It s Time to Let Old Things Die” – The Last Jedi(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)While Kylo’s speech to Rey could still be a dodge about her true parentage, his repudiation of the Jedi and the Sith in that moment speaks to anyone who sees the absolutism of those philosophies as the root of the galaxy’s problems. Sure, the Jedi are generally in the right, but they did nothing to alleviate slavery in the Outer Rim. And that surely contributed to Anakin Skywalker’s (Hayden Christensen) fall as much as any of his own actions. Outside of the film, it is also a call to the future of Star Wars – provided they stick the landing with The Rise of Skywalker.10. Luke And the Emperor’s Verbal Sparring Session – Return of the JediLuke’s “Your overconfidence is your weakness,” immediately followed by Palpatine’s “Your faith in your friends is yours” may not only be the best exchange in Episode VI, it may also be the key to understanding the difference between the Sith and, well, everyone else. Evil in the Star Wars galaxy is about being uniform even though it proves to be the very reason the Sith and the Empire fall. A sense of fellowship, meanwhile, allows the Alliance to thrive. Luke and Emperor become the embodiment of these philosophies and it is ultimately Anakin who must choose between them.9. Leia Saves Their Skins – Star WarsPresuming her to be a damsel in distress, Luke quickly learns Leia just needs a blaster and a window of opportunity to save herself. Oh, and she helps out these dopes who barged into the Death Star detention block. And much to Han’s dismay, she takes immediate control of a situation he thought was his. It may have led to the garbage smasher, but it was still a successful strategy. Also, her quick wit and quick thinking prove why she will always be our princess.8. The Alliance Attacks Scarif – Rogue One(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)The concluding fight above Scarif is, without a doubt, the best space-fight realized in a live-action Star Wars project thus far. Taking all of the techniques learned since 1977, it brings us back to that general look, but ups the ante with colliding Star Destroyers, callbacks to both Red and Gold Leaders, and a cameo by key Star Wars Rebels spaceship the Ghost. All the while, terrific photography and editing give it an exceptional verisimilitude. In many ways, it is the battle kids who grew up with Star Wars have been dreaming about since the 1980s.7. Palpatine Tempts Anakin In the Opera Hall – Revenge of the SithThe most accomplished scene in the film centers on Sheev Palpatine tempting Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) with the power to save Padme (Natalie Portman) and teasing the audience with the answer to Anakin’s parentage. Told as a parable on the dangers of Sith power, McDiarmid is at his subtlest – even if Sheev is a cartoon villain – as he relishes a well-written speech. It is also here that we finally see the seductive allure of the Dark Side Yoda eventually warned Luke about.6. The Trench Run – Star WarsA triumph of model work, editing, score, and scripting, the original Star Wars trench run is the battle scene from which nearly all other Star Wars space fights derive. Itself inspired by battles in World War II movies (and footage from the conflict itself), the sequence also proved Luke was a more accomplished pilot than his father. Although, viewers just wouldn’t know it for twenty years.5. “You were my brother, Anakin! I Loved You.” – Revenge of the Sith(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)While the long-awaited duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan fails to be one of the great fights, its immediate aftermath may be the most emotionally resonant moment in the whole Prequel Trilogy. Obi-Wan watches, heartbroken, as Anakin succumbs completely to the Dark Side. Slding toward a lava flow, the tortured Anakin shouts “I hate you!” And just before the heat sets Anakin aflame, Obi-Wan reminds him of their bond. In a literal sea of CGI lava, it is the most human moment to be found in the first three episodes.4. “I Know.” – The Empire Strikes BackHarrison Ford’s well known skepticism of Star Wars dialogue gave rise to Han’s best moment of swagger. Facing the carbonite freezer, he breaks away for one last kiss with Leia. She finally admits her love to him and instead of telling her to remember that (as scripted), Ford uttered the swagger-filled “I know” during one take. It impressed director Irvin Kershner and cemented Han’s cool factor for generations. It also gets a worthy callback when Leia says it to Han in the next film.3. The First Jump To Light Speed – Star WarsAs an early critic of the film noted, Star Wars brought speed to science fiction. Previously, spaceships lumbered slowly across the screen, but here they darted at impossible speeds. Thankfully, the Industrial Light Magic geniuses were able to visualize this sense of velocity with one of the greatest visual effects in all of cinema; it propels the viewer as much as it takes the Falcon to hyperspace and became the only way for the rest of us to imagine lightspeed.2. The Mos Eisley Cantina – Star WarsFor as much as Star Wars is about the Hero’s Journey and the creation of a modern mythology, it is also about exotic creatures. Before Lucas realized he could sell that imagery to kids in the form of action figures, he and the talents at ILM worked long and hard to sell this first major reveal of aliens from a thousand worlds. Backed by composer John Williams’ now-classic Cantina Band song, it offered viewers their first glimpse into a larger world.1. “No, I am your father.” – The Empire Strikes Back(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Not just the best Star Wars moment overall, but one of the great twists in all of cinema. The entire Skywalker saga revolves around this moment in which Vader tells Luke the truth about his paternity. And Luke responds in the exact way we would: an ugly cry. In terms of classical screenwriting, it is the protagonist confronting his lowest point. But the emotion involved – including the sense of betrayal involved – speaks to people at a genetic level. It is the single greatest Star Wars moment for a reason and we doubt it will ever be topped.Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week.
