2. 公平游戏环境
The CW reshaped the status quo of its comic book–based programming on Thursday by releasing a bevy of information during its annual Upfront presentation to advertisers. Besides trailers for the upcoming Batwoman and Katy Keene series, it also unveiled a new fall schedule obscuring the prevalence of superheroes on the network and teased the coming of “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” the annual fall Arrowverse crossover which will prove to be the most epic yet devised. So let’s take a look at what The CW’s comic book future will look like in the 2019-2020 season. No Legends of Tomorrow Until 2020Starting with the saddest bit of news — no, not the imminent end of Arrow — the network has postponed DC’s Legends of Tomorrow until mid-season. We’re big fans of the scrappy, goofy, time-traveling series. Despite the roughest of starts for any of the CW superhero shows, it found its voice in humor and the wilder aspects of the DC Comics library – from the most unlikely band of heroes to recurring spots for characters like John Constantine (Matt Ryan), and the demon Neron. Then again, those qualities make it much more a CW mid-season series than a headliner like The Flash or Riverdale. Consider off-beat series like My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and iZombie and the placement makes much more sense. While it proved to be a nice change of pace from the dour Arrow this season, it also doesn’t need the connection to the main Arrowverse series like it once did. Perhaps the series will flourish in iZombie’s place.Alternatively, we may soon be sad to discover Legends will take another cue from iZombie and plan for its fifth season to be its last.Batwoman Gets a Fall PremiereIn one of the bigger surprises, Batwoman will arrive on The CW in the fall. The series seemed destined to replace Arrow on the schedule, but giving it a big fall debut signals the network has a certain confidence in the program. The series stars Ruby Rose as Kate Kane, Bruce Wayne’s cousin. Three years after Batman disappeared from Gotham City, crime has once again run rampant, and Kate’s father Jacob (Dougray Scott) attempts to hold back the tide as the head of Crows Private Security. But with the Alice in Wonderland gang kidnapping his own officers, Kate returns to town only to discover Alice’s latest victim is her ex-girlfriend Sophie Moore (Meagan Tandy). Tired of this state of affairs, Kate learns the truth about Bruce and takes up the cape and cowl as her own – even if her father despises masked vigilantes. Also, it is entirely possible Kate has a closer tie to Alice (Rachel Skarsten) than she realizes. The premise continues a certain progression within the Arrowverse as it gets closer to the main DC superheroes. Also, Batwoman is a pretty great character in her own right thanks to a complex inner life and mythology devised by Greg Ruka, J.H. Williams III, and W. Haden Blackman. From the trailer released by The CW on Thursday, some of these elements are already on display; like Kate’s dishonorable discharge from military school and Alice herself. Sadly, some of the elements we love from the comic book – Jacob as Kate’s version of Alfred and a ongoing relationship with Maggie Sawyer – will not be part of the series, but knowing the love these programs have for the source material, we expect those things will be honored in some way.The series will be paired with Supergirl on Sundays, a move which seemed fated from the moment word of a potential Batwoman series first made the rounds last summer. This seemed like such an obvious pairing, we were shocked to learn in last year’s “Elseworlds” crossover that Kate lives on Earth-1 and not Kara’s (Melissa Benoist) Earth-38. But with the coming Crisis, their pan-dimensional addresses may change.Arrow Joins The Flash on Tuesdays(Photo by JSquared Photography/The CW)Though The CW has a bevy of superhero shows (and two more shows based on comic books), it makes an attempt not to be known as the comic book network. One of the tactics they employ to obscure its superhero reliance is doubling the shows up on two key nights. In fall 2019, Tuesday will once again serves as the anchor night for this scheme as Arrow spends its final days as The Flash’s lead-out.And based on the way season 7 ended, it seems the eighth and final year will see Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) on one last mission to not only save his city, but the entire Multiverse. In a way, it seems mind-boggling that a show once so grounded as Arrow would end with its lead character saving all of creation. Then again, it also seems like something Oliver would take upon himself even if he hadn’t made that deal with The Monitor (LaMonica Garrett) during last Fall’s “Elseworlds” crossover. Presumably, this last mission will take place within the Arrow context — that is to say, a grounded story without super-powered shenanigans — before the Crisis takes Ollie to the cosmos. We’re also going to presume Legends will take Arrow’s Tuesday night slot in 2020. Black Lightning, which has held the Tuesday 9 p.m. slot since it debuted, is moving to Monday’s following All American in the Fall.Katy Keene Also Gets a Mid-Season SlotWith Riverdale seemingly heading toward an endgame — at least, its season finale heavily suggested a series-ending twist for next year — its world will finally expand with Katy Keene, a series based on the Archie Comics character set for a mid-season debut. The network previously developed Chilling Adventures of Sabrina as a Riverdale expansion before it quickly found a new home at Netflix. Compared to that show, it is easy to see why Katy Keene is a better fit for the network.Starring Lucy Hale, Ashleigh Murray, Jonny Beachamp, and Julia Chan as four up-and-comers in a New York as magical and timeless as Riverdale is murky and corrupt, the series was initially pitched as a musical dramedy, but that terminology has disappeared from all official descriptions of the series. Music will still be a big part of the series as Murray imports her Riverdale character Josie McCoy to Katy Keene. In fact, supporting characters from the Josie and the Pussycats comics like the Alexander and Alexandra Cabot will feature regularly on the series in the forms of actors Lucien Laviscount and Camille Hyde. The series will also feature Zane Holtz as Katy’s longtime boyfriend KO Kelly – another Archie Comics import – and Katherine LaNasa as Katy’s “demanding” boss Gloria. While seemingly light as air, the show hints at a dark edge with Chan’s Pepper Smith described as a mysterious player in town with dubious connections and even more dubious wealth. Considering the series was developed by Riverdale and Sabrina executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the show is almost guaranteed to have a dark heart beating under that veneer of glamour. In the meantime, though, it looks like a near-perfect intersection of The CW’s most successful programs. It would just need a member of the Gossip Girl cast to show up as a speedster to be really perfect.Riverdale, meanwhile, will remain its Wednesday 8 p.m. time slot. We would not be surprised to see Katy Keene become its lead-out come winter. The Crisis Is Nearly Upon Us(Photo by The CW)But there was one key happening the network was excited to tease during its presentation: the 2019 Arrowverse crossover, “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” The title is borrowed from the historic 1985 miniseries published by DC Comics, in which the company celebrated 50 years of its rich history while also ending the DC Universe as it existed up to that point. As the marketing at the time stated, “Worlds will live, worlds will die, and nothing will ever be the same.”In calling the 2019 crossover “Crisis,” we expect it will have similar ramifications. As it happens, Barry Allen and Kara Zor-El famously died in that story – and in rare display of fortitude in comics, both stayed dead for quite awhile – a possible ending for their TV counterparts hinted at during “Elseworlds.” But more importantly, the story ended with several DC Comics Earths merging into one new Earth. Considering this was one of the original Crisis on Infinite Earths’ lasting legacies for nearly two decades, we would not be surprised to see Kara become a permanent resident of the same reality as Barry Allen. This may be why Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes) was so quick to give up his powers. In 10 months’ time, there will no longer be a Multiverse to vibe into.As a television event, “Crisis” will span for three episodes prior to the customary CW winter hiatus, then resume with two more episodes in January 2020. But considering the way the Arrowverse programs will be doubled-up on Sundays and Tuesdays, it is unclear how each of the five parts will air. The previous crossover were stripped across three-to-four days, so that will like be the case again, with Black Lightning switching nights with one of the other shows or taking part itself – though the network has made no suggestion the show will finally become part of the Arrowverse. In fact, its story lines are so tightly paced, we have no idea how it could pause to help Barry (Grant Gustin) save all of time and space. Nonetheless, we d still love to see the Pierces standing alongside the heroes of Earth-1 and Earth-38 when they face off against the single greatest existential threat to ever laugh at the DC superheroes.亚博登录注册鱿鱼游戏手游怎么下载,有不少的玩家都想知道答案,今天小编就为大家带来鱿鱼游戏手游下载方法,希望可以帮到玩家。

(Photo by Leon Bennett/Getty Images for Essence)Certified Fresh romance Love Basketball was the breakout hit for director Gina Prince-Bythewood. It has become a hallmark of Black cinema, and impacted the industry by blending romance and sports in a new way. Since then, she has worked on projects in other genres because she refuses to be pigeonholed – both in TV and film. (Though she did return to romance, triumphantly, in the acclaimed drama Beyond the Lights.)Her latest film, the big-budget adaptation of Greg Rucka s graphic novel, The Old Guard, was perhaps her biggest departure yet. Starring Charlize Theron, Kiki Layne, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and more, the action flick hit Netflix last year after a planned theatrical release was scuttled by the COVID-19 pandemic. Action is a genre that few women get the opportunity to tackle, and there are even fewer Black women at the helm of big-budget action features. Prince-Bythewood may have pushed the door open a little further: The Old Guard was a huge success for the streaming service, with 72 million views in the first month of release and talk of a sequel. She is following it up with The Woman King, starring Viola Davis as General Nanisca of Dahomey, who leads all-female unit known as the Dahomey Amazons who fought back against the French in the 19th century.Read more: Filmmaker Selects: Alma Har el s 10 Movies (and a Series) for Women s History MonthRead more: Filmmaker Selects: Issa Lópex s 10 Movies For Women s History MonthAs part of our “Filmmaker Selects” series for Women’s History Month, Prince-Bythewood shared 10 films from creatives that inspired her, and spoke with Top Critic Valerie Complex about what makes her tick, her favorite directors, and what the future is looking like for women filmmakers.Gina Prince-Bythewood on the set of The Old Guard. (Photo by Mohammad Kamal © Netflix 2020)Valerie Complex for Rotten Tomatoes: Do you miss the movie theater?Gina Prince-Bythewood: Yes! I love the collective theater experience of sitting with a group of people I don’t know, yet we all laugh/cry at the same thing. I love sitting in the theater when those opening credits come up. Especially when it s a movie that I’ve done and it s an exciting moment we all have to miss right now. What was the first film that made you really want to become a director?Prince-Bythewood: It s interesting because I didn t have that epiphany watching a movie. I had that epiphany that I was a director working on a movie. I was working on a student film at UCLA. I was on set and looked around then it hit me in that moment: you re a director. From then on, I worked on improving the craft and watching great films, which is the benefit of film school. You get to see so many movies that you normally wouldn t be able to. As time moved forward, I became more and more enamored with the craft and the power of filmmaking.Being on set, what were some of the challenges you remember having when shooting your first feature Love Basketball?Prince-Bythewood: While in school, you’re given room to fail, but for Love Basketball, that was my first shot. I worked on the script for so long and fought hard to make it. I was in a constant state of anxiety that I couldn t fail. It was the fear of: If I blow this, I’ll blow my entire career. Working on the film, the crew developed a sense of family, and everyone there wanted me to win, which helped fuel me to see it through to the end.Gina Prince-Bythewood and Sanaa Lathan while making Love Basketball. (Photo by © New Line Cinema)When you talk about that collective anxiety about failure, where does that stem from for you? Is it like a collective thing of being a woman, and being a woman of color? Was it being new in the industry? All of the above?Prince-Bythewood: It’s history. Women, Black folks, and people of color don t have the luxury of failure in this industry. It is very hard to get a second film, and a third film. Suddenly, you look around and you don t see anybody that looks like you – and I learned this pretty early on in my career. Are there any particular women filmmakers that you admire?Prince-Bythewood: Well, there is Kathryn Bigelow, and Euzhan Palcy – she is someone who looks like me, and is working with people like Marlon Brando. Then there is Kasi Lemmons who directed Eve s Bayou. It’s a film I respect immensely and was so different from anything that had come out before it. When Eve s Bayou came out, it was on such another level. The craft, the storytelling, the performances inspired me. The two sisters and their story, the performance that she got from Journee Smollett and Meagan Good, that movie stayed with me. I thought it was such an incredible debut from Kasi. I’ll never forget when I met Kasi before directing Love Basketball, and she was so giving of her time, support, and encouragement.Adepero Oduye in Dee Rees Pariah. (Photo by © Focus Features)What new filmmakers are you into right now?Prince-Bythewood: There are also some dope young women out there. I get excited, not only by their work and their talent, but the fight. I know what it takes to get a film made, and for them to have the grit to get it done is impressive. There is Dee Rees, her film Pariah blew me away. I loved Tina Mabry’s film Mississippi Damned; Little Woods by Nia DaCosta, and looking forward to her next film Candyman; and Channing Godfrey Peoples, who impressed me with Miss Juneteenth.Miss Juneteenth is such a great film.Prince-Bythewood: The movie took me into a world that I had no idea existed. There are a couple of scenes in there that are devastating to watch in the best way. Peoples did phenomenal world-building, which brought me into this small Texas community and taught me something. I cared about Turquoise (Nicole Beharie) and her daughter Kai (Alexis Chikaeze). She wants a better life for them both, and will do what it takes to change her circumstance. I just think Peoples created something special.I hear you really enjoyed Mati Diop’s first feature film, Atlantics, as well. I saw that one at Cannes in 2019.Prince-Bythewood: There was a lot of buzz about it, and I finally got a screener to watch it. I’m glad I didn’t know much about the film because it was exciting to experience that way. It s a quiet, beautiful movie, and I was just so invested in the love story. It’s beautiful, surprising, and heartbreaking.Radha Blank in The Forty-Year-Old Version. (Photo by © Netflix)And one of your favorites of last year is The Forty-Year-Old Version, which is written and directed by Radha Blank.Prince-Bythewood: Blank created something with all the elements: There’s drama, comedy, and an honest depiction of one woman s life who works in the creative arts. She has a fresh voice and clear vision that’s dope, dynamic, and bold. And shooting in black-and-white? A brilliant touch. I also loved the music and how it helps tell the story. It’s the best kind of humor because it comes from a place of truth.Your portfolio is super diversified. Like you got action, drama, romance. Do you like to do it all? Do you want to experiment with horror next? What s coming?Prince-Bythewood: I love every genre except for horror and westerns. I can t even tell you why. That s not to say I can t recognize a great western or horror film, but it s not my thing. Personally, I crave to do another love story. That is my favorite genre. However, I certainly want to see women, particularly Black women, creating in every genre. The next thing I am working on is The Woman King with Viola Davis. It s a historical epic. I m so hyped about the project because it’s a beautiful story, and we don’t often get epics of this caliber with women at the forefront.Kiki Layne with Gina Prince-Bythewood on the set of The Old Guard. (Photo by Amy Spinks / © Netflix)Do you think, since you directed Love Basketball, that the industry has changed for women filmmakers?Prince-Bythewood: It s interesting you asked that, because I came across an interview I did 21 years ago during the press tour for Love Basketball, and I talked about my hopes for the future, and the fact that we re still having those conversations 21 years later is wild to me. When I shot The Old Guard I thought to myself that few women get the opportunity to do big tent-pole and action films. When I was in film school we had Kathryn Bigelow. She was the only woman I knew doing big-budget movies. This past year, seven of us – and the majority of us, women of color – got the opportunity to do the high title films. However, you can’t get too excited though because you see the actual numbers and it s like, Oh my God, how is this still happening? How are we at 12% of anything?! But it’s important to remember there are so many great films by a fantastic group of women that are in the awards conversation this year and it s long overdue.Kathryn Bigelow on the set of Point Break in 1991. (Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)What do you hope to see for the future for not just women directors, but for Black women specifically? Paint a picture of how that would work if you had it your way.Prince-Bythewood: More Black women in the director s chair. I had this conversation with Regina King for another publication and we talked about that, what we bring as Black women to our storytelling. Hollywood needs to understand that we all bring something different, that we are not a monolith. We don t all share the same experiences, so we need women who are bringing different things, in different genres to the table. My life experiences are what s important to me and a large part of my work. Things are wide open, and there are so many stories and different perspectives to share. I want all of these women to have the opportunity to tell a story that no one else can tell.Gina Prince-Bythewood s The Old Guard is available on Netflix; Love Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees, and Beyond the Lights are available on Vudu and FandangoNOW. Nearly 60 years ago in 1962, King Kong and Godzilla squared off in Japan, and King Kong shoved a giant tree into Godzilla’s mouth. The two would engage in a back-and-forth battle that featured atomic breath and lightning strikes, and King Kong would ultimately leave the grueling brawl victorious. The Ishirō Honda-directed film, King Kong vs. Godzilla, was the third Godzilla film produced by Toho Studios, and it was a wildly ambitious crossover event that was a smashing success in Japan, as it sold 11.2 million tickets during its initial theatrical run. In other words, audiences went bananas for it.Decades later, both Godzilla and King Kong have appeared in dozens of movies and animated series that have seen them battling three-headed monsters, genetically-modified roses with sharp teeth, and New York concrete. The two haven’t shared a screen together since that colossal battle in 1962, which is why the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong feels like such an epic event. To get to this brawl, Legendary Studios embarked on a kaiju-sized film series called the “MonsterVerse” that kicked off in 2014 with Godzilla (2014), then continued with Kong: Skull Island (2017) and, most recently, Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019). The three films have set the chess pieces, and now the two gigantic titans will tussle for the ultimate checkmate.(Photo by Everett Collection)In honor of their rematch, we rewatched the King Kong vs. Godzilla Versus episode that was released in 2019 and analyzed their filmographies in an attempt to crown a statistical champion based on box office receipts, property destruction, amount of screen time, and Tomatometer and Audience scores. Two monsters (and their many variations) enter, and only one leaves (unless there’s a tie, in which case, come back for the rematch).*Quick note Not all of the King Kong and Godzilla films have Tomatometer scores or reliable box office data. That’s why the numbers fluctuate in each round. Also, we’re sticking to feature-length films, and leaving out the animated series that both have appeared in.Round 1 TomatometerGodzilla: 61.8% average (32 films)King Kong: 55.8% average (8 films)Highest rated: Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995), 100%Lowest rated: King Kong Lives (1986), 0%(Photo by TriStar courtesy Everett Collection)It’s only fitting that we kick off the battle with an incredibly close match-up in which the Tomatometer averages are separated by a measly 3.8%. Both franchises started off really well as 1933 s King Kong (Certified Fresh at 98% on the Tomatometer) and 1954 s Godzilla (Certified Fresh at 93%) were both blockbusters that wowed people with their innovative photography and beautiful miniature sets. However, the quality of the films began to mirror one of Godzilla’s fights He’s winning! He’s losing… He’s winning! He’s losing…What sealed the deal for Godzilla’s victory is the 0% score for 1986’s King Kong Lives. The movie famously tells the story of what happens after Kong survives the fall from the Empire State Building. In short, he gets a heart transplant, eats some alligators, finds a soulmate, and fathers a child. Today s Ketchup brings you another set of headlines from the world of film development news, covering movies with new roles for Richard Madden, Jessica Chastain, Michael Rooker, Elisabeth Moss, and more. This WEEK S TOP STORYMARVEL S YONDU May SNAP HIS TEETH INTO THE SUICIDE SQUAD AS KING SHARK(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Ever since Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn signed on to direct Warner Bros. and DC Comics The Suicide Squad, there have been rumblings that at least one of his Marvel stars would join him. For a while, there was word that might be Dave Bautista as Peacemaker, until recent news that the role will likely go to fellow professional wrestler John Cena instead. Today, we learned that James Gunn still might reunite with one of his Guardians stars, with Michael Rooker now in talks to play the monstrous villain, King Shark. If you re a fan of TV s The Flash, you might recall that King Shark has had some pretty cool scenes on that show. The Suicide Squad cast will also include Idris Elba, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Warner Bros. has scheduled The Suicide Squad for August 6, 2021. Gunn is expected to return to Marvel Studios for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after he wraps on the DC flick, suggesting a Guardians release date no sooner than 2022.Fresh Developments1. The biggest story for a Game of Thrones favorite this week however was for someone whose last episode was nearly six years ago. Richard Madden, who played Robb Stark, the onetime King in the North, is now in talks with Marvel Studios about starring in The Eternals. If he signs on, Madden would be playing Ikaris, who, in the comics, has been a leader of the Eternals in the past. Angelina Jolie is also starring in The Eternals as Sersi (a long-running member of the Avengers in the late 1980s and early 1990s). Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick, HBO s Silicon Valley) and South Korea s Ma Dong-Seok are also attached to play unknown characters. There have also been reports that Marvel is looking to cast an openly gay Asian actor, but that role appears to have not yet been cast. The Eternals will be directed by Chloe Zhao (The Rider, Songs My Brothers Taught Me), whose two films to date both have Tomatometer scores above 90%. There is no official release date for The Eternals yet, but if the filming start dates align with the Marvel s put out, it might be November 6, 2020 (after Black Widow, which might come out May 1, 2020).2. DISNEY SCHEDULES NEW STAR WARS MOVIES FOR 2022, 2024, AND 2026 (Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Every once in a while, a massive story will come out which is actually several all rolled into one. This week, Disney announced dozens of release dates (or changes), including some pretty seismic revelations. Last September, we heard that Disney planned on slowing down the release of their Star Wars franchise, and we now officially know that there will be a three year gap after this December s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Then, starting with December 16, 2022, there will be Star Wars movies every two years; the next two will arrive in theaters on December 20, 2024 and December 18, 2026. What we don t know is what these Star Wars movies actually are. It s known that Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi) has plans for a new Star Wars trilogy. Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss are also developing a trilogy which is rumored to be set in the Old Republic period most seen to date in various video games. (You can check out a breakdown of five places we think the Star Wars franchise can go in the 2020s here.) We think that some of the release date changes are Rotten Ideas, so please continue to that section to read more.3. BLACK PANTHER’s CHADWICK BOSEMAN TO SLASH AGAIN AS SAMURAI YASUKE (Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Chadwick Boseman has starred in a few movies now where he was a first. Boseman played baseball groundbreaker Jackie Robinson in 42, he played Thurgood Marshall (the first African American Supreme Court Justice) in Marshall, and of course, Black Panther was a significant first. This week, Boseman signed on for another first in the historical drama Yasuke, in which he will portray the first African samurai in Japan. The historical Yasuke was a Portuguese retainer of Mozambique heritage who was brought to Japan as a slave in the 16th century, making him the first black man to set foot on Japanese soil, [as] Yasuke’s arrival aroused the interest of Nobunaga, a ruthless warlord seeking to unite the fractured country under his banner. It s not yet known who will be directing Yasuke.4. Jane Campion is Back, with Doctor Strange and a Handmaid in Tow(Photo by ©Apparition/courtesy Everett Collection)Marvel Studios has tapped so many top stars (and helped others become stars) that a bunch of new films feature those names. Acclaimed New Zealand director Jane Campion (The Piano) hasn t directed a feature film in 10 years (2009 s Bright Star), and she is now preparing to direct The Power of the Dog, an adaptation of the 1967 novel by Thomas Savage. For this film, Campion has cast Benedict Cumberbatch (Marvel s Doctor Strange) and Elisabeth Moss of the acclaimed Hulu series The Handmaid s Tale. Like 1994 s Legends of the Fall, The Power of the Dog is a story of ranchers in Montana, with Cumberbatch playing a wealthy Montana rancher who engages in a relentless war against his brother s son from a secret marriage to a local widow (played by Moss). The brother and son characters have yet to be cast.5. IT: CHAPTER TWO STAR JESSICA CHASTAIN TO PUT ON THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE (Photo by Kerry Hayes/ © EuropaCorp USA /Courtesy Everett Collection)Nearly 20 years before acclaimed celebrity documentaries like Won t You Be My Neighbor? and RBG, one of the most successful early documentaries in that style was 2001 s The Eyes of Tammy Faye, about televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. Fox Searchlight is preparing to produce a dramatic biopic about Tammy and husband Jim, to also be titled The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Attached so far are Jessica Chastain (IT: Chapter Two, Dark Phoenix) and Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man). Director Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) will be working from a screenplay adapted from the documentary.  There s no word yet about which makeup artist will be hired to work on The Eyes of Tammy Faye, but whomever it is might automatically be in the running for a Hair and Makeup Oscar.6. CHRIS HEMSWORTH AND TIFFANY HADDISH TEAMING UP FOR BUDDY COP COMEDY (Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Universal)Chris Hemsworth is proving himself a master at comedic chemistry – witness the splendor of  Lebowski Thor – and a great foil to a strong female co-star (he will be back on screen with Ragnarok co-star Tessa Thompson in Men in Black: International this summer). The latest female star to sign on to test Hemsworth’s on-screen charisma and comedic chops is Tiffany Haddish, whose career has been blowing up ever since 2017 s Girls Trip. Haddish and Hemsworth will costar together in the buddy cop comedy Down Under Cover, with Haddish playing a cop who teams up with an undercover male stripper police detective.#7. Dark Knight Writer David S. Goyer Rebooting HellraiserJoel MearesBack in the early 2000s, Spyglass Entertainment was a prolific production company which provided Disney s Touchstone with many of its hits, including The Count of Monte Cristo, Shanghai Noon, and 1999 s The Sixth Sense. Spyglass is back in business again as an independent company called the Spyglass Media Group and in the market for new franchises. Their first major project was announced this week: a reboot of the prolific horror series Hellraiser, featuring the erotic horrors of Pinhead and his Cenobite collaborators. When Hellraiser came out over 30 years ago in 1987, there was nothing like it, but since then, movies like Saw and Hostel have made the torture porn horror subgenre almost ubiquitous. Hellraiser is poised to make a big return, and the job of adapting Hellraiser for a new generation is going to David S. Goyer, the screenwriter behind comic book adaptations like Blade, The Dark Knight, and Man of Steel, and this year s Terminator: Dark Fate. It s not yet known exactly how Goyer will reboot Hellraiser.Rotten Ideas2. DISNEY S MASSIVE RELEASE DATE DUMP REVEALS VAST CHANGES(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Pretty much every week, there are new release dates or changes for upcoming movies, but usually it s only for a handful of films. This week, Disney announced such a massive slate of new dates and changes that it s had sort of a tsunami-like impact on the calendar. Disney recently finalized its acquisition of Fox s film properties, and part of its ongoing plan is to slow Fox releases down to 5-6 films a year (cut in half from 12 in 2018). Many Fox films are therefore being delayed or outright canceled. For example, The New Mutants (the last Fox/Marvel movie before Marvel Studios takes over the X-Men and Fantastic Four) was originally scheduled for 2018, and now it s not scheduled to come out until April 3, 2020. Harrison Ford s Call of the Wild (February 21, 2020) is one of the other films pushed back into 2020, as is the long-in-development YA novel adaptation Artemis Fowl (May 29, 2020), though that has always been a Disney movie. Dora and the Lost City of Gold has already swept in to take over Fowl’s original August 9, 2019, release date. Disney s slate is also significant for what it doesn t have, such as Fox s various Marvel movies, like Gambit (with Channing Tatum attached), and projects like X-Force, X-23, Kitty Pryde, and James Franco s Madrox the Multiple Man.1. AVATAR 2 PUSHED BACK TO 2021 (SEVEN YEARS AFTER ITS ORIGINAL 2014 RELEASE DATE) (Photo by @ 20th Century Fox)Up until this week, it was believed that Avatar 2 would be released next year, on December 18, 2020, following years of delays from its original release date in December 2014. This week, as Disney also revealed an every-two-years rotation of Star Wars movies in 2022, 2024, and 2026, they did the same thing for the upcoming Avatar sequels. The four Avatar sequels (yes, James Cameron is really working on four sequels) are now scheduled for December releases in the odd years: Avatar 2 (December 17, 2021), Avatar 3 (December 22, 2023), Avatar 4 (December 19, 2025), and Avatar 5 (December 17, 2027). Paramount Pictures took quick advantage of the vacuum left by the Avatar 2 move, pushing their own sequel, Coming to America 2, back to December 18, 2020. By doing that, Paramount also made room for the science-fiction drama Infinite, starring Chris Evans, on August 7, 2020. For their own part, Disney also replaced Avatar 2 with their own films, the double feature of Steven Spielberg s West Side Story remake on December 18, 2020, followed by Cruella (the live-action 101 Dalmatians starring Emma Stone), five days later on December 23, 2020. We can expect the next few weeks to have more release date changes from Disney s competitor studios.Like this? With that in mind, we have reshaped our Indie Fresh List to reflect the specialty box office releases that are newly available on streaming services and VOD. This week we have a story about an aspiring chef who uses food to unite his family, a Sundance standout about high school cliques, and a gory, dark comedy about patricide.

The documentaries at this year’s Sundance Film Festival shared stories of good versus evil, of hard work and cutting loose, of reflections on life and death, of sharing never-before-seen stories and keeping viewers informed. With so many documentaries to choose from, it can be easy to get lost in all of the options. Fortunately, if you missed the film industry’s annual trek to Park City, many of these award-winning films will soon make it to a streaming platform or screen near you.Boys State (2020) 94%(Photo by Thorsten Thielow courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: Apple TV+, A24First-time director Amanda McBaine made the jump from producing to collaborate with her The Overnighters director Jesse Moss for an incisive look at U.S. politics through the eyes of young boys in Texas. The result is an astonishing documentary that examines how young people are shaping politics and how campaign strategies affect our own views – even on the scale of a boys civics camp. On awards night, Boys State won the U.S. Grand Jury Prize in its category. Jordan Raup wrote in The Film Stage, “This extraordinary portrait of a democratic process in microcosm is both a testament to how Washington, D.C. and the rest of the country could achieve bipartisanship as well as a look at what has led to such a fractured political system.”The Truffle Hunters (2020) 97%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: Sony Pictures ClassicsDirecting team Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw set their sights on Northern Italy, where a secret society of village elders and dogs protect their ritual of hunting for rare Alba Truffles from prying eyes. Although demand for the truffles is high, the group resists giving out their locations and even hunts at night to avoid detection. The documentary is at once a delightful character study and a meditation on greed versus the need to keep the tradition alive. Lee Marshall of Screen International wrote, “A slow-burn watch, The Truffle Hunters is a film as distinctive and lingering as the scent of the rare tuber that inspires it.”The Dissident (2020) 96%(Photo by Jake Swantko courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: N/AOscar-winning documentarian Bryan Fogel investigates the mysteries surrounding the death of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi after he entered the Saudi Arabian consulate in Turkey and never returned to his fiancée, Hatice Cengiz. The film retraces his steps through new footage and the testimonies of those who knew him for an intimate portrait of a man whose work continues to spurn the Saudi Arabian officials who tried to silence him. Eric Kohn of Indiewire said, “Fogel assembles a sturdy compendium of talking heads to explain how Khashoggi managed to speak truth to power for so long, and why his fate reverberates for other Saudis who share his sentiments.”Mucho Mucho Amor: The Legend of Walter Mercado (2020) 100%(Photo by Giovan Cordero courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: NetflixCristina Costantini and Kareem Tabsch had just finished filming their documentary about famed Puerto Rican astrologer Walter Mercado when he died in November of 2019. At the height of his fame, Mercado reached around 120 million people with his messages of love and hope – before he mysteriously went off the air in the 2000s. The result became Mucho Mucho Amor, a tribute to the man behind many sequined capes that reveals what happened to Mercado before and after his time as one of TV’s most charismatic personalities. Writing for The Wrap, Carlos Aguilar called Much Mucho Amor “a tribute as inspired and jubilant as its majestic subject, a true original.”Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets (2020) 93%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: N/AIn the waning months of 2016, documentarians Bill Ross IV and Turner Ross filmed the closing night of a local Las Vegas bar, capturing the patrons’ tearful goodbyes and plenty of dazed stares from one too many drinks. Only, the premise was actually a set-up: the bar is still open (and located in New Orleans), and everyone involved was instructed to behave as if the set-up were true. Nevertheless, the film is full of genuine emotions coming from normal people, blurring the lines between documentary film and traditional narrative. Amy Nicholson of Variety wrote, “It s The Bachelorette wed to The Iceman Cometh: the setup is staged, but the tears are real.”Dick Johnson Is Dead (2020) 100%(Photo by John Wakayama Carey courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: NetflixWith her feature debut, Cameraperson, Kirsten Johnson emerged as one of the documentary world’s most exciting new voices. Her next project, Dick Johnson is Dead, is radically different but no less inventive, challenging the way we talk about and imagine faith, aging, death, and the afterlife. As Johnson follows her own father s struggles with memory loss, the two confront the inevitable with plenty of laughs and heartfelt moments. Nick Allen of RogerEbert.com called it “a gorgeous blend of truth and fiction, with a guiding sense of humor that allows her film to always be honest and hilarious.”On the Record (2020) 99%(Photo by Becca Haydu courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: HBO MaxAlthough Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering’s documentary On the Record may have first caught the national spotlight after the departure of one of its top producers and a distributor, they bounced back at the Sundance Film Festival with a rapturous premiere screening. Their movie follows Drew Dixon as she recounts in vivid detail the night Russell Simmons assaulted her and processes the impact it eventually left on her career, wrestling with the pressure of coming forward in the wake of the #MeToo era. Her story was later painfully corroborated by several women who Simmons also harassed or assaulted. Beandrea July wrote in The Hollywood Reporter, “The overall result is an intimate look at what is at stake when rape victims decide whether or not to tell their stories.”Welcome to Chechnya (2020) 100%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: HBODavid France heads to closed-off Chechnya to meet the LGBTQ activists bravely combating the government-sanctioned violence against their community and helping others escape almost certain death. The documentary captures their struggle against the persecution of LGBTQ individuals and anyone seen supporting them, as the international press is shut out and the Russian government turns a blind eye to the carnage. Alonso Duralde of The Wrap called the film “a chilling examination of both the brutality that the Chechen LGBT community is forced to face on a daily basis and the difficulty of leaving the country for peace and safety.”The Painter and the Thief (2020) 96%(Photo by Barbora Kysilkova courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: N/AAfter two of Barbora Kysilkova’s paintings are stolen from an art gallery in Oslo, the artist approaches one of the men accused of stealing them, Karl-Bertil Nordland, and offers to paint his portrait in the hopes of learning where her still-missing paintings may have gone. Instead, the two strike up an unlikely friendship over several years. Benjamin Ree’s The Painter and the Thief won the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Creative Storytelling at the Sundance Awards on Saturday. Esther Zuckerman said in Thrillist, “Norwegian documentary filmmaker Ree paints a remarkable portrait of two lives that become intertwined.”The Fight (2020) 99%(Photo by Sabrina Lantos courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: Magnolia PicturesCo-directors Elyse Steinberg, Josh Kriegman, and Eli Despres reunite after their first project together, Weiner, to film the ongoing saga of what it’s like to be an ACLU lawyer in the Age of Trump. It’s a behind-the-scenes look at headlines and the high-stakes battles for freedom behind closed doors. The film won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Social Impact Filmmaking at the Sundance awards ceremony. Kate Erbland wrote in Indiewire, “The unfussy stuff, the human stuff, is what works best, both for The Fight and the very people it follows.”Feels Good Man (2020) 95%(Photo by Christian Bruno courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: N/AFirst-time filmmaker Arthur Jones follows the riveting transformation of the viral Internet character Pepe the Frog from an innocent comic figure to a symbol for internet trolls and the far right. Pepe’s creator, Matt Furie, now wants him back, but is it too late to save the frog’s reputation on the internet? Feels Good Man explores the unruly nature of internet meme culture and reveals how few rights creators have over their creations once they’re online. Jones won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Emerging Filmmaker. Angie Han of Mashable wrote, “Jones demonstrates an insatiable curiosity about his subject, speaking with everyone from a former Trump campaign insider to a collector of Rare Pepes to an expert on the occult.”Collective (2019) 99%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute)Distributor: Magnolia PicturesAs one of the standouts in the festival’s Spotlight section, Collective remained a must-see title, as director Alexander Nanau documents the step-by-step unfolding of a tragedy with in-depth details and breathtaking footage. After a devastating fire at a night club killed many and seriously injured several dozens more, investigative reporters discovered the government blocked survivors from life-saving treatments and covered up health code violations that led to the loss of several more lives. The harrowing account raises questions about who should be held accountable, if anyone will be at all. Vikram Murthi wrote for The Film Stage, “Collective sports a procedural-like pace that keeps the information legible and the action linear. It doesn t preclude a lighthearted touch nor get bogged down in misery to underline its points.”Like this? After a deadly virus wipes out the majority of the world s population, two groups of survivors end up picking sides — with 108-year-old prophet Mother Abigail (Whoopi Goldberg) or the demonic Randal Flagg (Alexander Skarsgård) — in a supernatural battle between good and evil to decide the fate of mankind. That, in a nutshell, is the gist of Stephen King s The Stand. The author s iconic novel is considered by many to be one of his best works — it has been updated multiple times by King and was adapted into an Emmy Award-winning mini-series by Mick Garris in 1994. Now, a new version of the story is hitting CBS All Access on Thursday, December 17, in the form of a nine-episode mini-series.This highly-anticipated series, which was brought to life by Josh Boone, Benjamin Cavell, and Taylor Elmore, features a packed cast, including Goldberg, Skarsgård, James Marsden, Odessa Young, Jovan Adepo, Amber Heard, Owen Teague, Henry Zaga, Brad William Henke, Greg Kinnear, Irene Bedard, Katherine McNamara, and Nat Wolff. It s been two-and-a-half decades since we ve seen Mother Abigail face-off against the Dark Man — that mini-series is Certified Fresh on the Tomatometer with a score of 71%. Will this new adaptation of Stephen King s novel fare better than its predecessor? Or will it end up dead-on-arrival? Here s what the critics are saying about CBS All Access s The Stand. How Faithful Is It to the Book?(Photo by © CBS All Access) This adaptation – developed by Josh Boone and Benjamin Cavell – takes the unique approach of telling the story in a nonlinear fashion, one that introduces viewers less to the pandemic itself more to the characters, the hearts and souls that the story is ultimately about. It s a move that may not sit well with some die-hard King fans, but it s one that injects a new life into the story. Starting with people, not with plague and it immediately sets the series out on a much better foot and almost immediately will hook audiences. — Nicole Drum, ComicBook.com If you are familiar with the first mini-series, there are a lot of scenes that looks eerily similar in the new iteration, but there is so much more. Those that have read the novel will find this adaptation does better justice to the massive cast of characters. But, you may not like all of the changes. — Alex Maidy, Jo Blo s Movie Network This new format also asks a lot of its viewers, particularly those who aren’t Constant Readers. With all of this leaping around, so much of the characterization draws upon an inherent knowledge of the source material. Relationships are formed without much connective tissue, narrative beats are well underway with nary a point of origin, and references are dropped at a brisk pace. Again, all of this will likely make for a disorienting experience for newcomers in King’s Dominion. — Michael Roffman, Consequence of SoundHow Is the cast?(Photo by Robert Falconer/CBS ©2020 CBS Interactive, Inc. All Rights Reserved.) Skarsgård does for Randall Flagg what his brother Bill did for Pennywise. This Randall Flagg is the force of evil that Matthew McConaughey failed to evoke in The Dark Tower. This Flagg is more than a monster but a true force of evil. Goldberg was also born to play Abigail Freemantle and brought me to tears during this series. — Alex Maidy, Jo Blo s Movie Network This version of the story more richly develops some of the key characters from the novel and indeed even the previous live-action adaptation. Frannie Goldsmith (played by Odessa Young), for example, is fleshed out in a more grounded and realistic way while Tom Cullen (Brad William Henke) is given more humanity than perhaps we ve seen before. It helps that both Young and Henke deliver solid performances that feel less like archetype characters and more like people we can easily identify from our own lives. — Nicole Drum, ComicBook.com The cast mostly doesn t rise much above the level of competence – nor, to be fair, drop much below it. The notable exceptions are Brad William Henke (Orange Is the New Black) making his mentally challenged character Tom Cullen impossible not to love; Alexander Skarsgård (True Blood) projecting a palpable sense of evil as Randall Flagg, the baddest of the bad guys; and Henry Zaga, who pulls off a nearly impossible assignment in portraying Nick Andros, a man who can t hear or speak and can barely see. — Glenn Garvin, Reason Online If there s a standout here it s Teague, who plays Harold as an incel sociopath who can just pass as an ordinary, happy citizen. In one of his best moments he fakes his way through the rebuilding utopia with a smile that tries to look winning but mostly looks like Jim Carrey in full manic mode. — Keith Phipps, TV GuideIs the World-Building Epic Enough?(Photo by James Minchin/CBS) Because things are moving at such a rapid clip, it’s hard to really get a grasp on what’s at stake, and that feeling extends towards much of the world building. At times, it’s a very claustrophobic experience with so much of what’s happening in this world being told rather than shown. And while some of this exposition is wisely left to our own imaginations, most of these comments feel like tossed in signposts, leaving the narrative feeling often hollow. — Michael Roffman, Consequence of Sound The series’ first couple of hours, premiere “The End” and second episode “Pocket Savior,” build an exquisite amount of tension: The shifting locations capture the permeation of the outbreak; each cough and sniffle portends upcoming doom; and the series’ makeup department should be commended for making the physical effects of “Captain Trips” very, very gross. But after those initial world-building episodes, The Stand never feels dirty enough — neither in its presentation of the physical and emotional impact of all this sickness, loss, and death, nor in its consideration of the lure of Flagg’s totalitarianism-as-hedonism rule in his New Vegas bacchanalia. — Roxana Hadadi, Variety The series generous budget keeps its post-apocalyptic America convincing and its tense moments deliver the scares. If these first four episodes offer li
