ALFRED MOLINA TO RETURN AS DOC OCK IN NEXT TOM HOLLAND SPIDER-MAN MOVIE(Photo by (c) Columbia courtesy Everett Collection)Well before Disney made their dozens of announcements yesterday about almost every other Marvel movie, the next Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland (we ll just call it Spider-Man 3 for now) repeatedly popped up in social networking news. Having said that, it might be important to look at the various stories with caution, as not all of them have been confirmed. Let s start with the most official announcement, which is that Alfred Molina will be reprising his role as Spider-Man 2 (Certified Fresh at 93%) villain Doctor Octopus. Setting aside his apparent death in that film (sorry for the spoiler, but you only had sixteen years to see the movie), Molina s character also comes from what we could consider a separate movie reality (in which Tobey Maguire plays Spider-Man) than that of Tom Holland s Peter Parker, in the same way that Jamie Foxx s Electro was in a movie starring Andrew Garfield s Peter Parker (The Amazing Spider-Man 2). Many writers are interpreting these particular announcements as possible confirmations that the next Spider-Man could be a live-action take on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Certified Fresh at 97%), including stories like this one that state that Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, Kirsten Dunst, and Emma Stone are returning as well. In truth, none of those actors has been officially announced yet, though it is worth mentioning that Emma Stone recently dropped out of Damien Chazelle s Babylon due to scheduling conflicts; we just don t know what those conflicts were. Elsewhere, it was also rumored that Charlie Cox, who played Daredevil in the popular Netflix series, might also appear in the film, but again, it s still just a rumor until it s confirmed. Sony Pictures has scheduled the next Spider-Man for December 17, 2021; you can read our own in-depth breakdown here.2. PLASTIC MAN GETTING  FEMALE-CENTRIC  REVAMP (PLASTIC WOMAN?) (Photo by DC Comics)The idea of the original super-stretchy superhero Plastic Man (who predates, say, DC Comics own Elongated Man, Mr. Fantastic of the Fantastic Four, Elastigirl of The Incredibles, and Ms. Marvel) getting his own movie has been bouncing around since the 1990s when the Wachowski siblings wrote a Plastic Man screenplay as a potential project to take up after The Matrix. Warner Bros. has once again revived the Plastic Man project, but this time, it s being described as female-centric, although it s unclear what exactly that means (for example, will Plastic Man now be a woman, or will there be another lead character who s a woman?). The new creative lead on Plastic Man (Plastic Woman, maybe?) will be relatively new screenwriter Cat Vasko, who has worked on several not-yet-produced projects, including Fierce Kingdom, Margot Robbie s Queen of the Air, and an adaptation of the award-winning comic book series Lumberjanes.3. DIRECTOR STEVEN SODERBERGH IS MAKING A SEX, LIES VIDEOTAPE SEQUEL (Photo by Outlaw Productions)It s difficult to imagine now, with all that has happened and changed in the last few decades, but there was a time (1989, to be precise), when the Sundance Film Festival was a relatively sleepy little film festival up in the mountains that wasn t besieged every year by the film industry and aspiring filmmakers. The movie that arguably started the indie revolution of the 1990s was Steven Soderbergh s debut feature film, sex, lies videotape (Certified Fresh at 96%), starring James Spader, Andie MacDowell, Peter Gallagher, and Laura San Giacomo. Over 30 years later, Soderbergh revealed this week that he is now working on a sequel to that film with its two female leads, Andie MacDowell and Laura San Giacomo, both agreeing to reprise their roles as sisters. Soderbergh didn t reveal anything else about the sequel, except that one of the sisters now has an adult daughter who is about the same age as the characters were in the original 1989 film.4. DREAMWORKS TO ADAPT POPULAR DOG MAN GRAPHIC NOVELS (Photo by Scholastic)Although Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (Certified Fresh at 87%) may have been unfortunately titled (since it has yet to be followed by a second epic movie), the film also has a Fresh Audience Score of 61%. (Instead of a sequel movie, the story continues on Netflix as The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants, which is now in in its fourth season.) The good news for Captain Underpants creator Dav Pilkey this week is that another of his popular children s graphic novels is now being developed as an animated feature film as well. DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures have acquired the rights to Pilkey s graphic novels series Dog Man for a feature film that will be directed by Peter Hastings, who has previously worked on the popular animated TV series Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain. As the title suggests, Dog Man is a canine superhero who fights crime alongside his kitten sidekick Li l Petey. The various Dog Man graphic novels have sold nearly 40 million copies in print to date and have been translated into 40 different languages.5. JENNIFER HUDSON TO STAR IN HER OWN CHRISTMAS MUSICAL (Photo by Derek Storm/Everett Collection)If the COVID-19 pandemic had never happened, the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect, starring Jennifer Hudson, would have come out this past August, instead of its new release date of August 13, 2021. While we all wait for that movie to come out, it sounds like Jennifer Hudson might already be preparing her next movie musical, as she is now producing and expected to star in a new project for New Line Cinema. The untitled musical comedy will revolve around Christmas songs both classic and new ones written for the movie  in a story about a down-and-out singer’s life being turned upside down when she is mistaken for writing the next Christmas hit. The untitled Christmas comedy is currently being written by TV writer Ira Madison III (Daybreak, Nikki Fre$h).6. CHRIS PRATT TO EARN THE BLACK BELT IN MARTIAL ARTS COMEDY (Photo by Chuck Zlotnick/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)This was obviously a big week for all things Marvel, but one of their stars lined up a project this week completely separate from all things superhero-related. Chris Pratt will star in the independent coming-of-age martial arts comedy The Black Belt, which he will also produce. The premise, written by TV writer Randall Green (Billions, The Perfect Date), revolves around a shy teenage boy who s trying to learn karate, with Chris Pratt attached to play the uncle who serves as a mentor in the boy s quest. Chris Pratt s Indivisible Productions will partner with a relatively new company called Monarch Media, which recently wrapped production on its first feature film, A Week Away. Other projects on Chris Pratt s schedule include the science fiction action movie The Tomorrow War (7/23/2021), the recently wrapped sequel Jurassic World: Dominion (6/10/2022), a supporting role as Star-Lord in Thor: Love and Thunder (5/6/2022), and, as of yesterday, a Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special for Disney+ in late 2022, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 sometime in 2023.7. KINGSMAN PRODUCER REVEALS PLANS FOR SEVEN MORE SUPER SPY MOVIES (Photo by Giles Keyte/©20th Century Fox Film Corp.)It was just eight years ago when comic book writer Mark Millar first published his indie series Kingsman: The Secret Service, but since then, those comics have given us Kingsman: The Secret Service (Certified Fresh at 74%), Kingsman: The Golden Circle (Rotten at 51%), and coming soon, the prequel The King s Man (3/12/2021). Talking about his company s ambitious expansion plans, Marv Group CEO Zygi Kamasa revealed this week that producer and director Matthew Vaughn has plans for something like seven more Kingsman films, as well as a Kingsman TV series, and two or three other franchies. It s unclear what those seven additional Kingsman movies might be, but it could be that the prequel The King s Man, starring Gemma Arterton and Ralph Fiennes, could serve as a launching point for additional prequels, in addition to further Kingsman movies starring Taron Egerton. Kingsman could also inspire spin-off movies, and Mark Millar s comics are part of a Millarworld shared universe that also includes Kick-Ass (Certified Fresh at 76%), which, incidentally, Vaughn also directed.8. JURASSIC PARK SCREENWRITER GOING OLD SCHOOL WITH THE GREEN HORNET AND KATO (Photo by ©Columbia Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Although we regularly hear about new movies based on comic books and video games, it s been quite a while since this writer remembers writing about a new project based upon a radio serial from the 1930s. That, however, is exactly what Universal Pictures is now developing as The Green Hornet and Kato (titled thus to put emphasis on the martial arts expert sidekick), which has its roots both as a radio serial and as a short-lived-but-well-remembered 1960s TV series starring Bruce Lee as Kato. Universal s new project should not be confused with Sony s 2011 comedy The Green Hornet (Rotten at 44%), directed by Michel Gondry and starring Seth Rogen, which was considered a box office bomb and failed to launch a franchise. To get The Green Hornet and Kato revved up, Universal Pictures has enlisted one of their heavy hitter screenwriters, David Koepp, whose impressive filmography includes the first Jurassic Park, the first Spider-Man, David Fincher s Panic Room, and Tom Cruise s War of the Worlds (he s also also currently working on Harrison Ford s Indiana Jones 5 (July, 2022) and a remake of Bride of Frankenstein). Universal won the rights to The Green Hornet following a bidding war in January.9. CHRISTOPHER NOLAN (AND OTHERS) RESPOND TO WB S HBO MAX ANNOUNCEMENT(Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/Paramount Pictures)Last week, Warner Bros. made the monumental announcement that their entire 2021 theatrical slate will also premiere day-and-date on the studio s HBO Max streaming service. That slate of 16-17 movies actually does not include Tenet (Fresh at 71%), since that movie already came out this past summer, but that hasn t deterred the film s director, Christopher Nolan, from speaking out against the move. Nolan described the HBO Max move as a bait and switch  against filmmakers who thought they were making big screen experiences for what Nolan called the worst streaming service. Other directors who voiced dissatisfaction with the deal included Patty Jenkins, Aaron Sorkin (The Trial of the Chicago 7), Judd Apatow, and the Directors Guild of America. Of the directors whose films are included in the 2021 move, the most vocal has probably been Denis Villeneuve, who was quoted as saying that Warner Bros might just have killed the Dune franchise. As for Christopher Nolan, there is now concern and speculation that Warner Bros. might lose the acclaimed director who gave them such films as Inception and the three Batman movies starring Christian Bale. All that being said, there are also people who back Warner Bros, especially considering that the COVID-19 pandemic is limiting theater attendance anyway, with director Steven Soderbergh being among them. (Never mind the fact that Soderbergh signed a three-year deal with HBO back in January.)On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

(Photo by © Warner Brothers)Hear Us Out is a semi-regular column in which guest contributors and editors venture forth a take that’s sure to get fans talking. It s been 15 years since Warner Brothers remake of House of Wax arrived in American theaters, gave slasher fans the brief thrill of seeing Paris Hilton speared through the head with a metal pipe, and quickly melted from people s memories to live in obscurity with most of the 2000s horror output. The movie, directed by Jaume Collett-Sera – who went on to make bats t killer- kid movie Orphan, a bunch of Liam Neeson action flicks, and Disney s upcoming Jungle Cruise – was largely lashed by critics (its Tomatometer is 26%) and ignored by audiences. To the extent that it comes up in conversation, it s mostly thanks to Hilton and her gory on-screen demise. On the anniversary of its May 6, 2005 release, we think the movie – and yes, even Hilton s turn in it – deserves a second look. (And if you re anything like this writer, a third, fourth, and fifth.) The 2000s was a mostly rough time for studio horror, especially slashers. The decade had its bright spots, though they often weren t recognized as such at the time: The Strangers and the 2006 remake of The Hills Have Eyes were neither hits nor critical darlings upon release, but have taken on cult status as audiences discovered their sinister charms over the years. House of Wax is due for a similar rediscovery. The movie is only a very loose remake of the 1953 Vincent Price film of the same name, which surely put the critics off right from the outset; there is a disfigured killer murdering people to use in wax displays, and there is a museum, but the similarities are faint-to-nonexistent from there. The 2005 House of Wax is actually more a reworking of 1979 s Tourist Trap, a far less revered property. A group of road-tripping teens is divided when one of their cars runs into trouble and a couple of them go searching for help only to discover a deserted town with a very strange old museum at its center. Cue the demented murder-twins-slash-wax-artists.It s hardly original stuff – a kinda remake of one movie and reworking of another, all stitched together with a bunch of cliches – but the execution is thrilling. Here are just five reasons why you should take the time to revisit this house, or dare enter for the first time.DIRECTOR JAUME COLLETT-SERA KNOWS WHAT HE S DOING(Photo by © Warner Brothers)Since House of Wax, director Collett-Sera has made a reputation for doing a whole lot with not much. His Liam Neeson films – Unknown, The Commuter, Non-Stop, Run All Night – always feel a cut above the average action programmer, and he managed to direct Orphan – yes, the one in which the kid turns out to be a 33-year-old prostitute – into near-Fresh territory (its Tomatometer is 56%). He shows his skill with elevating thin material throughout House of Wax, playing with once-tired slasher tropes like stalker cam to gleefully suspenseful ends. A scene set inside a movie theater, in which Final Girl Carly (Elisha Cuthbert) hides among wax figures, is expertly crafted nail-biting stuff. Also, Collett-Sera has a great eye for casting: the creepy truck driver we meet early on is played by Damon Herriman, who would go on to impress as Dewey Crowe in Justified and blow minds as Charles Manson in Mindhnunter. THE PRODUCTION DESIGN IS INNOVATIVE AND GENUINELY CREEPY(Photo by © Warner Brothers)A movie titled House of Wax lives or dies by its titular location: Audiences walk in expecting a creepy-as-hell museum made of wax – it’s why they ponied up to the box office in the first place – so you sure as hell better give it to them. Collett-Sera and the production designers deliver, and then some, with not just a house of wax, but an entire town. The central museum is an inspired house of horrors, entirely made of wax, with a smooth Art Deco exterior, threatening gallery rooms inside, and a memorable warren of tunnels and dungeons below, their walls lined with wax-covered bodies for maximum freakout effect. The finale, in which the entire museum melts down like a giant candle, is wonderfully realized, with Cuthbert and co-star Chad Michael Murray sinking into soupy stairs and a soupier bed as they escape their stalker – the wax in the scene is actually peanut butter – before clawing their way out through the building’s softening exterior walls. The town of Ambrose itself is unlike the usual tiny towns that slasher victims discover on their ill-advised short cuts; it feels self-consciously Art Deco and eerily well-preserved, like a section of a theme park playing at being classic, a place that is hiding from the world rather than forgotten by it. The vibe comes courtesy of producer Joel Silver, who directed the production designers to take inspiration from the Eritrean capital of Asmara, which is known for Modernist buildings built by Italian colonizers in the 1930s.IT DELIVERS MEMORABLE SLASHER AND TORTURE-PORN MOMENTS(Photo by © Warner Brothers)House of Wax arrived at a strange time for studio horror, and by most people’s assessments, not a time particularly marked by quality output. The slasher revival kicked off by Scream in the mid-to-late 1990s had not really delivered a “revival” at all, with imitators from I Know What You Did Last Summer to Urban Legend offering such diminishing returns that audiences stopped showing interest. Meanwhile, “torture porn” had officially arrived, buzz-saws and head cages in tow: just six months after House of Wax was released, the second Saw movie opened, and a few months after that Eli Roth’s Hostel took things up a notch.Wax was one of a few mid-2000s slasher remakes with a town-of-hicks angle – The Hills Have Eyes and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre among them – that tried to straddle both genres, mixing scenes of knife-wielding maniacs chasing girls up (sometimes melty) stairs with scenes of young hot things trapped in metal contraptions and tortured. And the film managed to conjure memorable moments in both styles. We’ll never forget the genuinely suspenseful sequence in which Carly, trapped underground with her lips glued shut, tries to get her brother’s attention by waving a finger at him through a metal grate in the floor, only to have maniacal Bo snip it off with cutting pliers. Just as memorable: Moments later, Carly rips apart those glued-together lips to scream for help. (Cuthbert insisted the production use real glue on set – though it was a softer variety than Crazy Glue.)Equally, torture-porn set pieces devoted to the art of turning a young tourist into a wax figure linger, with Collett-Sera sparing us no detail as Jared Padalecki’s Wade is injected with a paralyzing agent, stripped of his hair, set up in a hilariously elaborate gothic device, and blasted with boiling wax.PARIS HILTON DOESN T EMBARRASS HERSELF – IN FACT, SHE S GOOD(Photo by © Warner Brothers)Of course, the most memorable moment in House of Wax belongs to then ubiquitous socialite Paris Hilton, who – after a satisfying chase scene – is impaled by a metal pole thrown at her like a javelin. Warner Brothers’ marketing had gone out with the slogan “See Paris Die!” and Collett-Sera made sure to fulfill the promise, keeping his camera trained on the actress as her head – or at least a prop version of it – slides down the pole. Like videos of wet sand or slime on YouTube, it’s “oddly satisfying” to watch. The thing that often gets lost in the focus on Hilton’s big death scene, though, is that she’s actually pretty good as Paige in the scenes that require her to do more than scream and run for her life in red lingerie. (Yes, she dies in her knickers.) Like, well, Paris Hilton herself, the character of Paige is detached and narcissistic, but there’s something fascinating about her – a flatness that draws you on. She’s also given a bit more story than the slasher sidekick blonde often is, and when called for it, she shows a sharp sense of humor about herself and her public persona. (Side note: Hilton was totally on board with the “See Paris die!” tagline, and even asked WB if she could make T-shirts with the slogan herself.)IT S AN UNINTENTIONAL LOVE LETTER TO THE 2000s IN THE MOST COMFORTING WAY(Photo by © Warner Brothers)And not just because of the Paris factor. Like the town of Ambrose itself, House of Wax is a time capsule, and watching it today is strangely comforting – especially if you’re longing for the simpler days of playing Snake 2 on your NOKIA. The movie came out just before technology evolved to a level where a plot like this would strain credulity (OK, strain credulity even more than it already does): there’s no smart phone GPS to instantly tell them where they’re lost; no Waze to tell the secondary players how to get to the stadium and avoid the traffic jam; no quick and easy way to Google what the hell happened in this town of Ambrose; no Yelp! to discover the presumably awful reviews this museum has been getting. Instead we have old-school flip phones, wielded by the stars of some of the MOST mid-2000s TV shows: Cuthbert of 24; Padalecki of Gilmore Girls; Murray of One Tree Hill. And velour tracksuits (guess who?). And in a glorious final flourish, My Chemical Romance over the credits. The only thing House of Wax is missing is a pair of blood-splattered UGGs.But then it would be perfect, and imperfection is a big part of this slasher gem s charm.House of Wax was released on May 6, 2005. While 2019 will be stuffed with a diverse array of content from Stargirl to The Boys, the future of comic books on television looks to be an even wider field of genres and characters. Let’s take a look at some of these live-action projects and their current status.UPDATE 2/4/19: FX has officially ordered a series based on the comic Y: The Last Man that is set to debut in 2020. Titled simply Y, the series stars Diane Lane, Barry Keoghan, Imogen Poots, Lashana Lynch, Juliana Canfield, Marin Ireland, and Amber Tamblyn, and was co-created and written by Michael Green and Aïda Mashaka Croal. According to FX, Y takes place in a post-apocalyptic world in which a cataclysmic event has decimated every male save for one lone human. The new world order of women will explore gender, race, class and survival. Keep reading to find out more about this title and others.Jupiter’s LegacyPremise: While a generation of superheroes who came to prominence in the 1930s embrace their twilight years, their children find taking up their legacies far more difficult than they ever imagined. Based on the comic book by Millar and Frank Quitely.Status: One of the two Millarworld television shows Netflix announced in July 2018. Steven S. DeKnight, who produced the first season of Daredevil, will adapt the comic book into an eight-episode series. In February of 2019, the streaming service announced the primary cast, which includes Josh Duhamel as The Utopian — aka Sheldon Sampson — the leader of a superhero team known as The Union who finds himself disconnected from his family and, increasingly, the modern world. Leslie Bibb will play his wife Grace. She is one of the most powerful people on the planet, but regulates that power while trying her best to balance Sheldon’s ideals with the difficult modern world. Ben Daniels will play Sheldon s brother Walter— aka Brain-Wave — a smart man, as his superhero name suggests, who is willing to use the sort of violence Sheldon avoids. Other cast members include Elena Kampouris as Sheldon and Grace’s rebellious daughter Chloe, Andrew Horton as their son Brandon, who is trying his best to become the next Utopian, Mike Wade as Fitz Small, a former hero who keeps The Union running, and Matt Lanter as George Hutchence, The Utopian’s former friend and principle antagonist who goes by the name Skyfox.American Jesus(Photo by Image Comics)Premise: When a 12-year-old boy discovers he is the Second Coming of Christ, he is forced to grow up very quickly and deal with the fate of the world. Y’know, the typical pre-teen problems. Based on Millar’s ongoing comic book with artist Peter Gross.Status: The second of the Millarworld shows for Netflix. Luke Cage veteran Everardo Gout and brother Leopoldo Gout will executive produce the six-episode series.Katy Keene(Photo by Archie Comics)Premise: Based on Archie Comics characters, the potential series will follow Katy Keene (who has yet to appear on Riverdale) and three others as they pursue big, exciting lives in New York City. While Riverdale only gets to be a musical once a year, this spin-off will be a musical dramedy.Status: The CW ordered a pilot written by Riverdale mastermind Roberto Aguirre-Sacassa and Michael Grassi.Secret Six(Photo by DC Comics)Premise: Based on the popular early-2000s DC title by Gail Simone and Dale Eaglesham (for the most part) and an earlier DC Comics concept, Secret Six centers on six criminals forced to work together under the direction of the mysterious Mockingbird. Though their personalities initially chafe, they become a lovable ersatz family.Status: Announced in October, CBS plans to develop the series with Rick Muirragui set to write and executive produce.(Photo by Macall Polay/FX)Premise: Following a devastating event, Yorick and his pet monkey Ampersand are the last mammals on Earth with the Y chromosome. Alongside a former government agent and a geneticist, they set out on a journey across the partially collapsed United States to secure the future of the species. Based on the DC/Vertigo series Y: The Last Man by Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra.Status: FX announced on Feb. 4 that it ordered the project, called simply Y, to series. It stars Diane Lane and Barry Keoghan as Yorick. Other stars include Imogen Poots, Lashana Lynch, Juliana Canfield, Marin Ireland, and Amber Tamblyn. Described as a “a cracked mirror to look at our own very cracked world,” it will debut in 2020.American Flagg!(Photo by First Comics)Premise: Taking its cues from the Howard Chaykin comic book, the series will follow Reuben Flagg, a former TV star turned policeman who witnesses widespread corruption in mall the size of Chicago run by an exiled US government and various corporate sponsors. Believe it or not, it is meant to be a satire.Status: The television distribution arm of EuropaCorp s (producers of Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets) obtained the rights to Flagg! in 2017, but little has changed since then except the production company s own financial woes. In December, it announced 1 million loss and 42 percent drop in revenue and a renewed focus on core business in feature films. The company also sold its French TV division, so Flagg! s fate may not be good.Locke Key(Photo by IDW Publishing)Premise: Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriquez’s great comic book centers on the family of a slain San Francisco man who move to his ancestral home in Massachusetts. There, his youngest son discovers the house confers special abilities to the residents by unlocking certain rooms with specially designed keys. But a demon hiding in the nearby well wants those powers for itself.Status: After two pilots — one for Fox in 2011 and one for Hulu last year — the series is finally coming to fruition in a 10-episode Netflix series. While Jackson Robert Scott returns as younger son Bode, many of the actors from the earlier pilots have been replaced. Carlton Cuse, who executive produced the Hulu pilot, will remain as showrunner with Haunting of Hill House s Meredith Averill joining him for the Netflix version.Astro City(Photo by Image Comics)Premise: Based on Kurt Busiek, Brent Anderson, and Alex Ross’ expansive series of comic book stories, the series will center on the lives of ordinary people and the super-powered individuals flying above them. All of them will face Earth-shattering calamities and human-sized versions of great comic book upheavals. They also have to figure out to make a living in this crazy men-in-tights world.Status: FremantleMedia North America, the company that produces American Gods, acquired the rights in March of last year. Busiek is set to write the pilot with Rick Alexander, while Gregory Noveck is executive producer.Dylan Dog(Photo by Sergio Bonelli Editore)Premise: Don’t let his resemblance to Rupert Everett fool you, Dylan Dog is not a film star, but a fantastic paranormal detective. Granted, he gets personally involved with his clients and the paranormal often gets the best of him, but the important thing is that he means well. Also, his best friend may or may not be Groucho Marx. Based on comics by Tiziano Sclavi and a number of other writers and artists.Status: In August of last year, Dylan Dog publisher Sergio Bonelli Editore announced plans to form its own entertainment arm and develop an English-language Dylan Dog television show. The 10-episode series is expected to also launch a number of other Bonelli characters into television — provided the company ever finds production partners and an outlet willing to air or stream the show.Survivors Club(Photo by Vertigo/DC Comics)Premise: Many years after a demon possessed twins Jason and Jennifer and killed their mother, the siblings join a support group for the ex-possessed. But then a new evil arises, forcing the group to become a demon-hunting team. Based on the DC/Vertigo series by Lauren Beukes, Dale Halverson, and Ryan Kelly.Status: Because apparently six series based on DC Comics properties isn t enough, The CW announced plans to develop Survivors Club back in November with Sweet/Vicious’s Jared Frieder writing the pilot.MIND MGMT(Photo by Dark Horse Comics)Premise: Based on Matt Kindt’s comic book, true crime writer Meru’s attempts to understand a mysterious plane flight leads to a world of powers and secret organizations. The production company and Dark Horse s partnership also includes titles like Harrow County and Concrete. With their first collaboration, The Umbrella Academy, about to debut on Netflix, it is possible any of those titles could prove to be a worthy follow-up.LazarusPremise: The Greg Rucka and Michael Lark comic book takes place in a near future controlled by 16 rival families attempting to gain more power, territory, and resources. To combat various threats to their status quo, each family has a chosen defender known as a Lazarus. One such Lazarus is Forever Carlyle, protector of the family in control of much of the world’s food supply, who is starting to doubt her place in the world.Status: Amazon picked up the rights during a spending spree in 2017 that included options on the science fiction novels Ringworld and Snow Crash. Rucka was said to be writing the script, but considering Amazon’s commitment to a massive The Lord of the Rings TV universe, it is unclear if there is still money for these sci-fi ideas.Quantum and Woody(Photo by Valiant Entertainment)Premise: Brothers Eric and Woody Henderson have fantastic superpowers, but they must “klang” their power bands together once a day or the energies they contain will kill them. For two years, they live and are worshipped. Then they die. This time around, they look and act like pop stars. But their cycle of death and rebirth may be coming to an end. But like most of the comic books UCP optioned in the last few years, there has been no news since. Considering it took four years for UCP to get Umbrella Academy to series, there is hope yet.

The networks continued their big Television Critics Association (TCA) presentations this week, with Showtime making the biggest splash thanks to new details on its Dexter reboot, New Blood, and some frank admissions about how the original series ended. Not to be outdone, ABC made news with an historic first for Dancing with the Stars. Plus there are tons of new trailers – including a look at the second season of Apple TV+ s The Morning Sow – and big casting news, including LaKeith Stanfield s return to scary stories as the lead of the adaptation of hit thriller novel, The Changeling. Check out all the week s biggest stories below.TOP STORYUpcoming Dexter Limited Series: Showtime President Says ‘I Think This Is Going to Be Brilliant’(Photo by © Showtime)One of the best things about Showtime’s upcoming Dexter: New Blood limited series is that it finally gives all us Dexter devoted a chance to see a proper ending for the serial killer of serial killers. And it turns out viewers weren’t the only ones dissatisfied with the 2013 original series finale, which saw Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) faking his death … and going off to work for a lumber company in the northwest.“You know what? Dexter is a jewel in the crown of Showtime, and we didn t do it justice in the end, I think,” Showtime president of entertainment Gary Levin said during the network’s Television Critics Association (TCA) presentation on Tuesday. “And that has always been a burr under my saddle.”Hall also said viewers’ unhappiness with the original series was a big reason why he finally said yes to revisiting the role that earned him five Emmy nominations.“I think a lot of what was mystifying or dissatisfying to people is a lot of what creates the appetite that we re hopefully satisfying now,” Hall said during the New Blood TCA session. “The show did not end in a way that was definitive for people or gave anybody a sense of closure. We didn t hear from Dexter. He didn t say anything to us when the show ended, and I think it left audiences, if nothing else, (in) a sense of suspended animation. Yeah, I think a big part of our motivation was to definitively answer the question of what happened to this guy.”Levine said he thinks they nailed it this time. “We always wanted to see if there was a way to do it right,” he said. “I have to say, we finally got to a place that I am just – I can t wait to show it to you and the world.  I think this is going to be (brilliant).”And we can confirm the limited series – or “special event series,” as the network is officially calling it – gets off to a good start. Picking up about a decade after Dexter went off to live his lumberjack life, in New Blood he’s now residing in a small town in upstate New York, going by the name Jim, and ingratiating himself with the townsfolk while he successfully resists the urges of his Dark Passenger. For a while, anyway … and that’s all we’ll say about that. The 10-episode event series was filmed in Massachusetts during the pandemic, with original series showrunner Clyde Phillips (who left the series before it ended) back on board, and is intended as a one-off. But would a great ratings performance for the show mean Dexter could become a regular visitor to the Showtime lineup?“You re way ahead of me,” Levine said. “I m trying to finish producing the special event series. Expectation is so high for it. And, again, the series is so special to our network and to me, that that s my focus right now. Let s make it great. The future will take care of itself.”Dexter: New Blood premieres on Showtime Nov. 7.More from Showtime: Your Honor Gets Surprise Second Season as the Ray Donovan Movie Lands a Date(ish)(Photo by Skip Bolen/Showtime) Though the finale of the Bryan Cranston thriller Your Honor was quite definitive, Showtime announced the limited series will return for a second season, after Cranston became intrigued with a storyline idea from writer and showrunner Peter Moffat. Levine said he is still “completely in the dark” about that idea, but Season 2 is a go anyway. The Ray Donovan movie that will wrap up that series after its abrupt cancelation with multiple storylines left dangling, is tentatively planned for a 2022 winter premiere. Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight return as Ray and Mickey, with most of the rest of the cast also return, according to Levine. The last five episodes of Billions Season 5 premiere Sept. 5, and Levine said despite their pandemic delay, they “come back just shot out of a cannon, and you are immediately thrown back into the story.” Season 6 is scheduled to premiere in January. Desus Mero was renewed for a fourth season. Levine said Showtime swapped a long-in-development Halo series for The Man Who Fell to Earth with Paramount+ because Halo was always “an odd fit” with Showtime’s drama-heavy lineup. The Wood writer and director Rick Famuyiwa is teaming up with The Chi and Snowfall writer Justin Hillian to adapt the 1999 comedy movie as a potential Showtime series. At ABC, The Connors Are Set to Go Live, Kevin Hart Swims with Sharks, and A First for Dancing with the Stars(Photo by Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic) During its TCA panel, ABC revealed the first two contestants for Season 30 of Dancing with the Stars: Olympic gold medalist gymnast Suni Lee, and, in what will be the competition’s first-ever same-sex pairing, pop star JoJo Siwa, who will compete with one of the female pro dancers. The rest of the cast will be revealed on Sept. 8, and the season premieres live on Sept. 20. The Connors’ cast is doing live Season 4 premieres for the East Coast and West Coast on Sept. 22. Kevin Hart will be a new guest shark on Season 13 of Shark Tank, which premieres Oct. 8. John Carroll Lynch’s character didn’t make it out of Big Sky’s first season alive, but Lynch has been confirmed as a returning presence for Season 2. His character, it’s important to note, did have a twin … The Goldbergs Season 9 premiere will give George Segal a proper send-off, with a storyline that includes the death of his character. Steve Harvey will star in a primetime court show called Judge Steve Harvey.NEW TRAILERS: The Morning Show Season 2 Trailer Reveals a Surprise New Cast MemberThe Morning Show, Season 2, finds even more drama surrounding the UBA network’s morning show, as Jennifer Aniston’s Alex and Reese Witherspoon’s Bradley appear to no longer be co-hosts! The movie is Certified Fresh at 95% and made a cool .2 billion at the global box office in its first weekend. It could very well turn out to be the biggest movie ever – and one of the most beloved. The key to its success? Critics say it s all about giving the MCU s loyal fans what they want. Eric Eisenberg of Cinema Blend was typical in his assessment, calling Endgame,  A wonderful gift to all those who have spent the last decade-plus emotionally engaging with the lives and adventures of these characters.” It s stacked with f k yeah moments and delights, the best of which make callbacks to early films in the franchise. And one of those movies is more important than any other. So, hear us out: Endgame owes much of its success to that under-sung hero of the MCU, Avengers: Age of Ultron. While one of the least popular entries in the MCU, and the lowest-rated Avengers flick on the Tomatometer at 75% (which is still not bad!), Ultron deserves credit as the foundation on which the entire second half of the MCU was built. And we re about to make a spoiler-filled case as to why, breaking down the story beats and relationships that Ultron established and that Endgame would use to such great effect – so be warned if you ve not seen Endgame, Ultron, or both.Major spoilers for Avengers: Endgame follow. Hulk Taking Control of Both Sides? It Started With Ultron.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Around the time of Age of Ultron, there was still hope at Marvel that they would be able to make a deal for the Hulk and start a string of Hulk-only movies. Universal still owned the rights to the character for all standalone films, but behind the scenes, there were talks. When it became clear that a deal was not going to be forthcoming, Marvel spread the planned events for a standalone Hulk film throughout Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor: Ragnarok, and the Infinity War two-parter. That’s right, the seeds of the fantastic Hipster Hulk payoff in Endgame were first sewn in Ultron. Think back to the Hulk/Banner in Ultron; he’s held back from the team at times to make sure he doesn’t do too much damage. Then, after a wave of the finger from Scarlet Witch, he wreaks havoc. Throughout Ultron, Banner is always questioning whether the team needs a ‘code green.’ He knows the Hulk s a powerful weapon, but he s terrified that he s not in control. By Endgame, we ve finally seen the complete character arc from this struggle in Ultron, to the Hulk completely taking over in Thor: Ragnarok, to Banner s inability to summon the green guy in Avengers: Infinity War, to the eventual blend of the Hulk s might and Bruce s mind in the new movie. (The latest incarnation is a play on a storyline that first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #377, in which Banner finally has control of both the monster and his mind – adding hipster glasses with a huge cardigan is just a lovely bonus.)The Start of a Beautiful and Pivotal Relationship: Wanda and Vision, a.k.a. WandaVision.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)The WandaVision relationship, as well as their powers, would become crucial to the MCU and especially to the Infinity Saga. It is also central to two of the saga s biggest moments: it s Vision s death in Infinity War that breaks our hearts, and it s Wanda s moment of revenge and power in Endgame that gives us such great feels. And that all started with Ultron. From her first encounter with Vision in Age of Ultron, Wanda is drawn to his mind; even when we still didn t know if he was good or evil, her first words about him were, “I can read him… his mind. Ultron introduces Wanda and her brother to his creation in the final stages of completion and even before his birth, Vision s mind called out to her. Talk about a meet-cute.When we finally learn Thanos master plan to gather all the Infinity Stones, we realize quickly that Vision will be in danger. The Mind Stone is the origin of his powers – it s literally fused to his head using whatever tech stuff Shuri was talking about in Infinity War. That connection sets up what might be the Infinity Saga s ultimate and most painful sacrifice: Killing Vision in Infinity War as a last-ditch effort to thwart Thanos turns out to be a pointless and heartbreaking effort – with a twist of the Infinity Gauntlet, it is all undone. We watched them fall in love, beginning in Ultron, and witnessed their tragic end in Infinity War. When she appears in Endgame, summoning her powers in fury, it s a completely satisfying bookend to everything Ultron began.Who is worthy? THE PERFECT SETUP FOR CAP S BIG HAMMER MOMENT.In one of the best scenes in Age of Ultron, the Avengers pal around with a few drinks at an afterparty. What is played as an entertaining comedic break, with the various members trying to lift Thor’s hammer, Mjölnir, actually sets up one of the biggest moments of Endgame. Iron Man, War Machine, Hawkeye, and – comically – Bruce Banner all try to lift the hammer and prove themselves worthy. None are successful, but for one brief moment, Captain America tugs at Mjölnir, and it quivers. The movement wipes a confident smirk off Thor’s face and signals that maybe Steve Rogers could one day wield the hammer. So it’s no surprise in the finale of Endgame to see who is lifting Mjölnir. Thor even exclaims, “I knew it!” (It s actually another direct pull from the comics: Captain America is one of the few worthy enough to wield the hammer forged in the heart of a dying star – we re still getting goosebumps just thinking about it.)Clint Barton, Hawkeye, and the farm.According to Ultron director Joss Whedon, there were several creative differences between him and Marvel Studios during the filming of Age of Ultron, none more contentious than the debate over the trip to the farm to meet Clint’s family. Marvel brass were apparently not into giving Hawkeye a familial backstory – having seen Endgame, we re thankful they lost on that one. The broken, singularly focused, vigilante Ronin that Hawkeye becomes in Endgame doesn t have the same resonance if we haven t spent time with his family. (And what about that opening scene?!) The device of the farm is also used to further establish the closeness between Natasha and Hawkeye, as in Ultron we learn that she is the only one with prior knowledge of the farm and his family life. These quiet moments raise the emotional stakes of the fight we see between Clint and Natasha in Endgame, as they do battle over who will sacrifice themselves for the Soul Stone. Without the Ultron setup, those stakes would not be so high.Tony vs. Cap: A Civil War begins.Civil War may have been the first battle between the Avengers, but some early, quiet shots were fired in Ultron. The argument on the farm during which Steve scolds Tony for creating, and especially for not telling him about, Ultron, is one many will point back to as the start of their fracturing. Then there is the physical fight between Captain America and Iron Man that happens later in Ultron, while Tony tries to finish his Vision . Steve and Tony come to blows about it just before Thor harnesses lighting to finally birth Vision. The Russo brothers told us in our extended interview that the Avengers failed in Avengers: Infinity War because they were divided, and the cracks of that fatal divide first began to appear in Ultron. Even direct quotes from Age of Ultron reappear in Endgame with Tony repeating his warning, “We’ll lose – adding Steve’s reply of “We’ll lose together” is of little solace. That broken version of Tony, ripping his core from his chest, was perhaps even harder to watch than his heroic end.Tony, always trying to get ahead of things.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)It starts and stops with Tony. The whole plot of Ultron comes from one driving force: Tony’s fear of the next thing from space trying to annihilate the earth. That up there, he quips, pointing to the sky and referencing the alien invasion of New York. That s the endgame. And it was, in every sense of the word. Thanos does come to destroy the earth, and that threat is what the Avengers were created to stop. Tony, in creating Ultron, was trying to win a war before it started; during the wood cutting argument, Steve astutely reminds him, “Every time someone tries to win a war before it starts, people die.” Before the events of Ultron, Tony created Veronica just in case they ever lost control of The Hulk (or a lullaby didn’t work). The Hulkbuster back-up plan kind of worked. That drive to plan ahead, to be prepared, may have been a fatal flaw with Ultron, but it also allowed Tony to outsmart Thanos in Endgame. The glove Tony installs on his suit to steal the infinity stones is just that type of planning. He was reluctant to join the second fight and the visions of defeat he saw in Ultron still haunt him, but he was, in the end, able to use that fear to defeat their most formidable foe. It s a complete bookend to the character and his essential motivation.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)And there are so many smaller Ultron setups:Ragnarok: Heimdall first teases Ragnarok and the fact they will lose in Thor’s vision before he later heads to a cave to get more answers. Thor sees the Infinity Stones and the gauntlet for the first time. More breadcrumbs to our final battle.Avengers Assemble: The “Avengers Assemble” line that Captain America calls out in the final battle was first teased in Ultron. A near synonymous tag line for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, it is a line comic book fans have been waiting to hear. We cut to credits before Cap could call it out in Ultron, but we finally get it in Endgame.Wakanda: In a quick scene with Ulysses Klaw, we first hear reference what would turn out to be the key destination in the highest-grossing superhero movie ever – before Endgame.
