That is more money than the combined total of the  number 1 film at the box office for the last five weeks. It is around million more than what every film has made for the last two weekends. Granted, that is a five-day total since Wednesday, but whether it is million or .9 million (its three-day weekend haul), Godzilla vs. Kong has provided some life for theatrical prospects. Especially after besting Wonder Woman 1984’s entire domestic gross in just five days. Who would have guessed that three of the best four theatrical openings over the past year would be films also concurrently available on HBO Max for home subscribers? Warner Bros. has to be feeling particularly good about that, grabbing the best of both worlds after some serious criticism with the sudden move for their 2021 lineup to the dual-opening strategy back in December.Before everyone starts date-shaming the umpteenth-shifting No Time To Die for moving from this weekend, we’ll have to see how Godzilla vs. Kng holds over the next several weeks. Warner Bros. already pushed back Mortal Kombat a week to give GvK an additional week at number before that takes over. WB’s HBO Max titles are likely to be on top of the box office for six straight weeks. More theaters and chains are opening this month, which could reduce the weekly drops a little. While Wonder Woman 1984 dropped over 67% after Christmas weekend, the last three WB releases have fallen between 53.2% and 56.3% and done (to date) 2.50-3.17 times their opening grosses. The last film in the MonsterVerse series, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, had a 3-day opening of .7 million (.1 million in five days) and finished with just 0 million domestic and 6 million internationally. GvK is practically there with theaters at limited capacity and some chains still closed. The mere thought that we could even be talking about a 0 million picture again, let alone one that has already grossed 5 million worldwide, is a day many probably thought was much further down the road and provides real hope that we are on the road to recovery — if we can just hold out a bit more and continue to get vaccinated.Versus vs. Versus: Which Is the Highest-Earning and Freshest Movie Showdown?

Last week we were all easing back into a brief period of seeming normalcy with Warner Bros. finally launching Christopher Nolan’s Tenet stateside. We were also still hedging our bets and putting kid gloves on while reporting what, if anything, the movie s numbers meant about the state of moviegoing. This column has offered its own vision on how to look at them in the short term, but the studios are once again starting to look at the long game King of the Crop: Tenet Takes In .7 Million, But Calculating What That Means Is a Nolan-esque Mindbender(Photo by © Warner Bros.)Warner Bros. was choosing not to release daily breakdowns on the Tenet numbers and for the second week in a row adopted the strategy of only releasing estimated totals for the film on Sunday morning. Based on reporting last week, we had a number of .2 million, which would have been a pretty on-target expected haul for the first (one-time-expected) blockbuster released since March, given what we had seen out of Unhinged and The New Mutants. However, further reporting revealed that the weekend number may have been more in the vicinity of just million, with the rest of that .2 million coming from previews going back to the previous Monday. We knew some of the haul had come from earlier days last week, but may not have expected only 60% of that .2 million to have come over the four-day holiday. That brings us to this weekend.According to the studio, Tenet led the box office this weekend with .7 million. That would be a 66.9% drop from the initially reported .2 million. However, if we look at the guesstimated breakdown to million, that would be just a 44.2%. Except for the fact that Warner Bros. is saying that Tenet dropped just 29% this weekend, which by most accounts is a very solid hold bringing its domestic total to .5 million. But if that is true that means the three-day weekend haul last week was more between million and million, with the additional money being made on the Monday holiday.That is less than half of what the average expectations were for Nolan’s film s opening weekend, which is why rumors began to surface on the eve of the Dune trailer launch that WB was going to be pushing back Wonder Woman 1984 from its October 2 slot; on Friday, they did just that, pushing the superhero flick to December 25, 2020.(Photo by George Kraychyk / © TriStar Pictures / Courtesy Everett Collection)Universal was the next to act, moving its Candyman remake into sometime in 2021. That leaves Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile and Sony’s animated Lord and Miller production, Connected, opening on October 23, as the next major studio releases on the schedule. On the semi-bright side, Tenet is up to 7 million worldwide, surpassing WB’s Birds of Prey (1 million) for fifth place on the decimated 2020 chart, behind Bad Boys for Life, The Eight Hundred, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Dolittle.The only new release of the week was The Broken Hearts Gallery. Sony decided to adopt the WB method and kept its numbers from the record until this morning: the movie made .1 million in 2,204 theaters. That’s a 9 per-theater-average. Even if we apply our rule of 2.5-to-3x for the multiple, that would mean the movie would be on track to earn .75-to-.3 million total in normal times. Or, to put it in September release terms, a number between what was earned by last year’s The Goldfinch and 1988’s Moon Over Parador.Last week, Mulan grossed a reported .5 million from more than 1.1 homes with its $US29.99 Premium On Demand release on Disney+. This weekend, it made another .2 million opening in China for an international gross of .6 million. (That comes with a blackout on local press covering the film there due to several controversies.) Also last week, the column suggested The New Mutants was headed for a final tally between .9 million and .3 million; its total this weekend stands at .3 million. Unhinged is not putting up big numbers, but they are a little better when compared against the August releases we had it in league last week. With .8 million total, it just outgrossed 2014’s Sin City: A Dame to Die For. Fifteen years ago, in 2005, Wedding Crashers passed 0 million on its 59th day of release with 8,000, making it the sixth-highest–grossing “R”-rated film ever at the time.September 12: In 2015, Marvel’s Ant-Man made it to 5 million, grossing 1,713 on day 58. But it was this day in 2002 that was part of one of the most historic runs in box office history: With .05 million, My Big Fat Greek Wedding made it to 0 million on its 148th day of release.What Should Have Been This WeekendThis was to be the weekend of the latest film in The Conjuring universe. The James Wan-less The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It was going to be battling A Quiet Place Part II for number 1 at the box office when that film initially moved from March to September in what looked like a pretty horror-centric month. Tarantino and Robbie push back.Wednesday, May 22: The buzz and spectacle of the Once Upon A Time in Hollywood premiere undoubtedly stole some attention away from Parasite’s impressive debut: two days after the fictionalized retelling of the Manson Family murders debuted, it s still dominating the festival headlines. Reports broke late on Tuesday night that hundreds of ticket holders were turned away from the premiere; as some had paid as much as ,200 to secure one ticket to the starry event, and many members of the press were among those turned away, the festival was forced to issue an apology for the mixup. Then Wednesday afternoon Tarantino continued to make headlines during a press conference when he rejected the hypothesis of a question that said Margot Robbie had limited dialogue portraying the Manson Family murder victim, Sharon Tate. The Aussie actress, however, was quick to counter the assumption saying,  I think the moments I was on screen gave a moment to honor Sharon, I think the tragedy was the loss of innocence. To show the wonderful sides of her could be done without speaking. I did feel like I got a lot of time to explore the character without dialogue, which is an interesting thing. (Photo by Daniele Venturelli/WireImage)Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Gets Six-Minute Standing Ovation, But Tarantino Doesn t Want to Know the Tomatometer ScoreTuesday, May 21: The moment that all of Cannes – and just about everyone else – had been waiting for finally arrived on Monday night, when Quentin Tarantino premiered his ninth studio film, Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood (2019) 85%, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie. Before the curtains parted for the screening of the Hollywood drama that s loosely based on the Manson Family s murder of Sharon Tate and others, Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Frémaux reiterated (in English and French) Tarantino s plea to avoid spoilers when discussing the film. It s debatable if such precautions were needed, but as of yet, most critics are keeping the key plot points out of reviews. Angeleno Tarantino was six years old when the Manson Murders rocked Hollywood and the nation, and critics are calling Once Upon A Time in Hollywood a deeply personal and violent ode to the summer of 69. While 1960s Hollywood played out on the screen, today s Hollywood looked: Timothée Chalamet, Chloe Sevigny, Diego Luna, Xavier Dolan, Tilda Swinton, Dakota and Elle Fanning, Chris Tucker, and Adrien Brody were all spotted at the premiere. Tarantino s close friend and Grindhouse co-director Robert Rodriguez was also on hand to congratulate and celebrate with cast and crew and gave us his one-word review: Outstanding! After enjoying a six-minute standing ovation at the premiere, Pitt, DiCaprio, and Tarantino headed to a glitzy after-party at the JW Marriott joined by most of the star power on the Rivera. During the party, Tarantino chatted with guests about film, Cannes memories, and was in high spirits. When we caught up with him, we asked if he wanted to know the Tomatometer score for the film (which we had just revealed), and he quickly recoiled as if we were about to shout a spoiler to his film. Oh God, no! he said, laughing.  If they re bad I wanna enjoy my night, and if they re good, it s a gift. A gift I will happily unwrap – tomorrow. Tarantino Asks Viewers Not to Spoil the Hollywood EndgameMonday, May 20: Everyone is worried about spoilers these days – even legendary director Quentin Tarantino. After a script for The Hateful Eight leaked before production began, forcing the director to make significant changes, Tarantino is taking no chances with his latest film. Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood (2019) 85%, the A-lister–stuffed 60s period feature starring Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Margot Robbie, premieres Tuesday and has been shrouded in mystery. Little is known of the plot, save that it will feature numerous late 60 s icons such as Bruce Lee, Steve McQueen, Sharon Tate, and her infamous murderer Charles Manson. Speaking to Rotten Tomatoes to promote his film The Mustang earlier in the year, costar Bruce Dern said, “All I can say is — this is me telling you — he’s a magician, because in this movie, he did something mad. It’s probably the most unique endeavor I’ve seen a director undertake and do. Without ruining the movie for you — I can’t tell you what that is, but the minute you get to see it, you will say, ‘Bruce Dern is absolutely right. ” Hoping to keep the movie s surprises under wraps as long as possible, Tarantino posted an open letter asking those that see it first to be mindful of spoilers, adding, The cast and crew have worked so hard to create something original, and I only ask that everyone avoids revealing anything that would prevent later audiences from experiencing the film in the same way. And all these people have a certain amount of baggage that they bring.Woodson was the son of a slave, so his vulnerabilities are different than, say, Atticus [in Lovecraft Country]. Atticus came from Chicago, Atticus has always been a free man, and his journey up to that point was that of isolation, even within a majority group. And so he goes to war, he also has to find this video file, so he s an imaginative character. But in Korea, what you see in Korea, that climate was different, that conflict was different. Or coming out of the Vietnam War. So he has all that stuff bagged up too.The cheat sheet is they re people first. First, they re people and they have all their baggage, they have all their circumstances. And then they enter into the war. So how they fight is how they fight, but all that is dependent on where they came from. And it’s contemporary, because everybody has those things — everybody has a father, everybody grew up in some type of community. And that s when it s contemporary. The relationship between Paul and David in Da 5 Bloods (pictured) and Atticus looking for your missing father in Lovecraft Country are prime examples. As both a parent and a son, do you source from your personal experiences to shape these performances?Majors: Yes, and I continue to. It s right there. The best type of acting is when you don t have to act. You can just say someone else s lines with your experience in it. And so yes. I mean, with David in particular — my father being a military man, my personal relationship with him of mystery, chasing, wondering and some feelings of abandonment — all those things David shares. David shares those steps, and we’re alike in that way. And so I’m pulling directly from my life, and then you take that raw material and you got to say, OK, yes, but we re also in a Spike Lee joint, so let s shift this here, move this here. David s from New Orleans, I m from Texas — let s shift this here. But everything that s inside the character is coming from my personal experience. There are things that you have to pull from. I m not a teacher, I don’t teach Black studies like David did. That s homework. I ll just go get that, you know what I mean?And then when it comes with Atticus, the way he is — that s a different element. And one of the things I do often is to try to think of what s like the ideal situation to be with your father or with your child. And usually the play or the film is not going to give you that, right? And so that s what you re pushing for in the scene. With Montrose [Atticus’ father], Atticus is always trying to get some affection, some approval from him. That s the perfect world for Atticus; that s what he wants.And so I also look at my child and I see that that s what she wants from me. So I m 30 years old now, and I think I ve got my own s going on. I know what I want; I don t need anybody s approval. But the truth is you need your parent s approval at some point in your life. And when you re stuck in that relationship, and that s your primary relationship — father-son, child-parent — that is, to the Nth degree, important.(Photo by Elizabeth Morris/HBO)It seems like you gravitate towards visceral, male familial relationships in your roles as well, such David and Paul in Da 5 Bloods, Mont and Jimmie in The Last Black Man in San Francisco, and Atticus and George in Lovecraft Country. What draws you characters like this?Majors: I think, for me, I work from what I know and what I ve experienced. I grew up playing sports; I grew up in the South. For better or for worse it s a very masculine culture, it s a very gendered culture, unfortunately. But I am a son of that, I grew up there, that s where my people come from, and I m proud of that.And so in just living those relationships, the men in my life, I ve bumped up against them a lot, a whole lot. Whether it d be homies that you meet in detention or your classmates or your coaches Now, as a Black man, I do find that in cinema we don t get portrayed fully. Something that Delroy Lindo has been saying a lot is that it’s a corrective; Da 5 Bloods is a corrective to the American-Vietnam War conflict. And so I m not here to teach nothing, but I do want to enlighten folks. You can enlighten a group of people who aren t a part of that group, right? That gives them intelligence, where they say, Oh, OK. This group is not just this. As Mont says, We re not just one thing. And then you enlighten them and then you empower your own group, because you begin to expand the scope of that group s identity.And so I understand it deeply. As I said, I d grown up skinny, a theater nerd, played on the B team for a while, I finally made it to varsity. I understand the ins and outs of it. And I think [these relationships are] quite romantic. When I say romantic, I mean Roman in that way, that fraternal love that men have for each other without any pejorative ideas placed on it. Men are capable of great affection with each other. They re capable of great aggression towards each other. And I think when you show both of those, you enhance the entire human experience.(Photo by Stammtisch.604)Community is important now more than ever. You’re an alumni of Yale School of Drama along with Black actors such as Lupita Nyong’o, Brain Tyree Henry, Winston Duke, Yahya Abdul Mateen II, and many more. How have those relationships helped you navigate your career?Majors: Each actor is individual. And that community I mean, you kind of spread out of home. There s a phrase or a passage that says, A prophet that has no dignity in his hometown. You got to get the f out of school and you enter into the world. And so I found myself to be more akin and more on the shoulders of Courtney B. Vance, who plays George [in Lovecraft Country], or Angela Bassett, the work of August Wilson, the pedagogy of Lloyd Richards.I think the cool part about it is that we re all in the game now. And that s for the world to talk about, where the Black Yalie is, what an actor from Yale is. But I think we re all clearly individual, and have very different approaches to the work. Again, like the characters, we all come from different backgrounds, but there is a shared DNA as we all spent three years in New Haven. They’re all like siblings of mine. Like, you already checked to see what they re doing because you re doing your own thing.But it means a lot, though, because we all don t live together now. We actually have spread out. I m in Santa Fe, Yahya s wherever he is, being somewhere else, being someplace else. We re all over the world, all over the country. So [it’s a] long web. Because regardless of what your experience was at the school, et cetera, you re connected. So that community does happen. And the people looking up, it s like, Oh, wow. If I want to be an actor If I want to be a young Black actor, as I did, you look to see where the guys went. And so it s a privilege to continue the lineage of Courtney B. Vance and Angela Bassett, we can keep going. But it s a privilege.It is best that we stay separate in order to continue to build out our community. And it didn t land on me, and it broke my heart because I was like, Oh, I got this, sure. I got this, sure. But my first year in the profession I got very, very, very close to playing a role in Detroit, Kathryn Bigelow’s film. And I had flown out — I was shooting When We Rise; it was my first show ever and I had flown down to LA. I was in San Francisco; I d flown down to LA, and I did a table read with Bigelow.I mean, I love the cast who s there, [but] it seemed as if I had the role It was me. I had to fly back — I was still in school at the time — I d fly back to New Haven to graduate. And the day before I graduated, I got a phone call from my agent saying, “We don t know what happened, but they re going to go in a different direction.”And I was completely just destroyed. I mean, it was great. It was Kathryn Bigelow, I was doing a TV show, it was like a huge feature. I then went off to do Hostiles [pictured above], which I don t regret at all. But, yeah, that was a kick in the gut.Lovecraft Country premieres on Sunday, August 16 at 9 p.m. on HBO
