Beasts of the Southern Wild debuted at Sundance in 2012, cementing Benh Zeitlin as a uniquely imaginative filmmaker. The movie blew audiences away and wound up with four Oscar nominations, including one for Best Picture. Fans couldn’t wait to see what this new auteur would deliver next. Well, Zeitlin took eight years to finish his sophomore feature, the Peter Pan-inspired Wendy, and it just premiered at Sundance to mixed reviews. I definitely encouraged it when Adam McKay was directing Anchorman. With The Forty-Year-Old Virgin, Steve is such a master at it that whatever scene we were doing we would always leave time to shoot the script but then also to really play. And that s how we did the chest-waxing scene. It basically was an extended improvisation. The Scene: Andy Gets His Chest WaxedOne moment, one line really – “Kelly Clarkson!” – remains the most cherished among a series of wonderful moments in this landmark comedy (though the final musical number, a post-coital “Age of Aquarius,” comes close). In this unique makeover scene, Andy (Carell) gets his chest waxed, and in order to capture the moment in its visceral, wince-inducing glory, Apatow simply let his four cameras roll.“Someone came in and said, ‘I act and I wax!’”“We wanted to do some version of a makeover sequence, but we knew that had been done a ton of times. So we were trying to think of original scenes for a makeover montage. Then one day Steve said, ‘What if you waxed me but you did it for real?’ Now at the time, I thought Steve made it up and had never been waxed, but since then I realized that he had been waxed many times in his life and was pretending that he had never been waxed before. I know that by the shape of his chest hair. But at the time, I thought, wow, what a crazy idea. Who ever gets waxed? So we hired a woman who was a professional chest-waxer to do it in the movie. And I also think it works the same way a horror movie works, which is: you think something s gonna happen, then it finally does, but not at the moment you think it will – and it makes you scream and hide your face. It has a little horror to it as well.”THE IMPACT: A New Kind of Comedy Virgin was a box office success – it’s currently the 16th highest-earning R-rated comedy of all time – but more than that, it reshaped our idea of movie comedies, particularly those with a romantic bent. Gross-out laughs could be followed by moments of genuine sweetness. Romantic leads could be dorkish, a little schlubby, and, at least for much of the film – very hairy. Silliness could be whip-smart. As long as it was all grounded in reality. Apatow would go on to direct landmark comedies like Knocked Up and Trainwreck, and produce the likes of Bridesmaids and HBO’s Girls, all of which bear some of the markings of what made Virgin such a smash: characters you love and moments you will never forget, because they make you cringe, gag, and leave the room, but also make you swoon and cry.“I m sure it seemed very self-involved. But it was why the movie worked.”“A lot of our crew didn t get what we were doing. That was at a time when there weren t a lot of movies that were shot the way we were, with all of this improvisation, and a lot of the crew just seemed annoyed we were doing so many takes. The main characters from Aquaman are not expected to appear in The Trench, which suggests that the horror movie may instead focus on surface dwellers who come into contact with the monsters separate from any involvement with Atlantis.MARCH: CAST ANNOUNCED FOR CHRISTOPHER NOLAN S AMBITIOUS ACTION MOVIE TENET(Photo by JA, Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)Although we obviously knew what Dunkirk was about way before release (the title gives it away), director Christopher Nolan also has a history of starting his movies with mystery premises (we re thinking here of Inception and Interstellar in particular). In March, pretty much the only thing we knew about Nolan s next film (revealed in May to be called Tenet) was that Warner Bros had scheduled it for release on July 17, 2020 (up against Bob s Burgers: The Movie). In March, we learned that Nolan had cast John David Washington (Denzel s son and the star of Spike Lee s BlacKkKlansman) as the film s lead, as well as Robert Pattinson and Elizabeth Debicki (Ayesha from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2). Since then, the cast has expanded to include Kenneth Branagh, Clémence Poésy (In Bruges), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron), and frequent Nolan collaborator Michael Caine. Most recently, the first trailer for Tenet debuted online just last week in a surprise move from Warner Bros., and it included a six-minute prologue preview attached to IMAX screenings of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.APRIL: SHAZAM! 2 TAKES OFF, AND DWAYNE JOHNSON GETS BLACK ADAM GREENLIGHT TOO(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)After this year s Shazam! had only been in theaters for a week, Warner Bros. went ahead and announced that they were moving forward with plans for a sequel, even despite the film opening much lower ( million domestically) than similar movies like Captain Marvel (3 million) and Aquaman (.8 million). We don t know the premise of the sequel yet, but the mid-credits tease give a clue about the possible villain. A few weeks ago, we learned that Shazam! 2 is now scheduled for release on April 1st, 2022. This news came after Dwayne Johnson s long-in-development Black Adam movie (based on the popular Shazam! villain) will start filming soon and is scheduled for release on December 22, 2021. The timing suggests that the Black Adam movie might directly lead to Dwayne Johnson also reprising the role in Shazam! 2. Warner Bros. is also directly positioning Shazam! 2 against Marvel movies, as Sony s Spider-Verse sequel comes out a week later (4/8/2022) and Black Panther II comes out a month later (5/6/2022), followed by DC Super Pets on 5/20/2022.MAY: ROBERT PATTINSON TAKES OVER THE BATMAN (Photo by Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)Although some superhero movies are slow burns when it comes to news, others, especially the biggest movies (Avengers, or in this case, Batman) can happen in what feels like a relatively brief amount of time. Specifically, just eight months ago, we knew nothing about who would be in the 2021 reboot The Batman (6/25/2021). That all started to change in mid-May, beginning with the news that the shortlist included Nicholas Hoult and Robert Pattinson, the latter of whom secured the role two weeks later. In the meantime, details started to trickle forth about who the villains in The Batman would be. In September, as the Joker hype express was well under way, it was confirmed that there were no plans for Joaquin Phoenix s Joker to crossover with Robert Pattinson s Batman (which is not to say that the Joker won t be in Batman movies, just not Phoenix s specific version). Two weeks later, there was talk about Jonah Hill possibly taking on a villain role, which ultimately didn t work out, as both the Penguin and Riddler went to other actors. In October, Paul Dano (Love and Mercy) landed the role of the Riddler and Zoe Kravitz became the next actress to portray Selina Kyle, A.K.A. Catwoman. Last month, The Batman found two more of its ensemble cast members as Colin Farrell (who also played the villain Bullseye in Daredevil) was cast as the Penguin, and Andy Serkis was cast as Bruce Wayne s butler, Alfred Pennyworth. And lastly, there was also news last month suggesting that Warner Bros. might give villains like Catwoman, The Penguin, and The Riddler their own Joker-style spinoff movies.JUNE: DISNEY BEGINS CASTING LIVE-ACTION THE LITTLE MERMAID (Photo by Leon Bennett/Getty Images)Walt Disney Pictures has yet to announce a release date (or even a release year) for its live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, but we can be fairly certain that it s actually happening, because the studio made lots of splashes about it this year. Going into July, we had already known for a while that The Little Mermaid will be directed by Rob Marshall as his next Disney project after last year s Mary Poppins Returns. The casting news started in late June with word that Melissa McCarthy was in early talks to play the evil, tentacled sea witch Ursula. (It s not yet known if Ursula will be fully CGI, or possibly part live action with animated tentacles.) This was soon followed by the casting of Awkwafina (Ocean s Eight) and Jacob Tremblay (Room) as the voices of the animated animal characters Scuttle the seagull and Flounder (who s not a flounder), respectively. Next up and again, this was all basically in the same week was the casting of Ariel herself, who will be played by R B singer Halle Bailey, who, with her sister Chloe, makes up the singing group Chloe x Bailey. For a while, Harry Styles of One Direction was also in talks to play the romantic lead Prince Eric, but that role ultimately went to relatively unknown actor Jonah Hauer-King.JULY: MARVEL MAKES MASSIVE PHASE FOUR ANNOUNCEMENT AT COMIC-CON(Photo by Kevin Winter/Getty Images)In recent years, Marvel Studios has sometimes stayed relatively quiet at San Diego Comic-Con, but that was definitely not the case in 2019, when they had arguably the biggest superhero movie news event of all time. Part of the reason for that has to do with the way that Phase Four will involve not just movies, but also various shows on the Disney+ streaming service as well. Without getting into every detail (since doing so would involve a column as long as this one for the entire year), we ll just mention that the (movie) announcements included: Black Widow (5/1/2020), The Eternals (11/6/2020), Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2/12/2021), Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (5/7/2021), Thor: Love and Thunder (11/5/2021), Blade (presumably Phase Five), Fantastic Four (Phase 5), and X-Men (Phase 5). In August, we also found out that Kit Harrington will be joining The Eternals as long-time Avengers member Black Knight, and that Black Panther II is scheduled for May 6, 2022.AUGUST: GUILLERMO DEL TORO S STAR-STUDDED NIGHTMARE ALLEY CASTS UP(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)After years and years of attempts to get several different projects off the ground, director Guillermo del Toro is ultimately using his post-Shape of Water clout to get something completely different going, namely a remake of the 1947 carnival thriller Nightmare Alley (Fresh at 100%). By the time August rolled around, seven-time Academy Award nominee Bradley Cooper had already been attached for the role originally played by Tyrone Power for some time, but that month, we finally saw the casting of two of his female co-stars. Cate Blanchett, who s a seven time Academy Award nominee and two time winner (for Blue Jasmine and The Aviator) ultimately landed a key supporting role, while Toni Collette, who received an Academy Award nomination herself for The Sixth Sense, secured the female lead role of the psychiatrist and hypnotist who teams up with Cooper s carnival con man. Later, in September, a key role also went to Rooney Mara. Fox Searchlight is expected to schedule Nightmare Alley sometime in prime awards season in late 2020.SEPTEMBER: SONY AND MARVEL COME TO TERMS ON SPIDER-MAN DEAL(Photo by Sony Pictures)You may remember that last summer, there was a big uproar about the fact that talks between Sony Pictures and Walt Disney Pictures (and their Marvel Studios) had fallen apart over future Spider-Man movies starring Tom Holland within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Reportedly, Disney and Marvel had wanted a 50% cut of future Spider-Man movies in exchange for Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios working on the movies for Sony. After all of the attention and feedback from the fans, the relevant parties started up talks again, resulting in the big news in September that Sony and Marvel would indeed work together on a third solo Spider-Man film starring Tom Holland, to be released on July 16, 2021 and directed by Jon Watts, who directed the first two. The financial compromise calls for Disney to receive 25% of the film s profits (leaving 75% for Sony), down from their original request of 50%. As part of the new deal, Tom Holland will also appear as Spider-Man in one more MCU movie, the title and premise of which hasn t been revealed yet.OCTOBER: JOHN WICK IS GETTING HIS OWN CINEMATIC UNIVERSE(Photo by @ Lionsgate)When John Wick was first released in 2014, it became something of a pop culture phenomenon that helped Keanu Reeves stage a mid-career comeback and led to two sequels (thus far) and continuing box office success. Lionsgate scheduled John Wick: Chapter 4 for release on May 21, 2021 a while ago, and in October, we learned that Lionsgate is not limiting their John Wick plans to just Keanu Reeves movies. Instead, the studio is moving forward with plans for a female-centric John Wick spinoff called Ballerina about a young female assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family. Although the premise doesn t specify a nationality for the Ballerina, there is something of a trope involving Russian ballerinas who become super spies or assassins (mainly we re thinking here of both Red Sparrow and Marvel s Black Widow). The Ballerina character was briefly seen in John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum, played by newcomer Unity Phelan, but it s possible/likely that another actress will star in Ballerina. And then, earlier this month, Warner Bros. effectively did something huge that raised the profile of John Wick: Chapter 4 at the same time as it directly competed with it, announcing that they had scheduled their own Keanu Reeves sequel, The Matrix 4, for May 21, 2021, the same release date as John Wick: Chapter 4. Both Carrie-Anne Moss and Reeves are attached to return in their roles as Trinity and Neo in that film.NOVEMBER: SPIDER-VERSE 2 AND BLACK PANTHER II ANNOUNCED FOR 2022(Photo by Sony Pictures)As mentioned above, Marvel Studios put on a big, big panel at San Diego Comic-Con this past summer, but the dates were only specific for 2020 and 2021. Since then, Marvel has also announced a release date of May 6, 2022 for Black Panther II, but November s biggest news story painted an image of 2022 that promises an ambitious slate comparable to that of 2019. Sony Pictures has confirmed plans for a second animated movie starring the Miles Morales version of the web-crawler as seen in last year s Academy Award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The Spider-Verse sequel is now scheduled for April 8, 2022, just shy of a month before Black Panther II on May 6, 2022. Although they re not yet dated, two other Marvel movies that might be scheduled for 2022 are the Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali and the Fantastic Four movie mentioned at Comic-Con that would finally bring Stan Lee s original Marvel super team into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As for what we might see in Spider-Verse 2, the final scenes of the first movie did hint at both Spider-Man 2099 and the finger-pointing Spider-Man 67.DECEMBER: KUMAIL NANJIANI S ETERNALS BODY BLOWS UP THE INTERNET LIKE BABY YODA(Photo by @kumailn/Instagram)Like any Marvel Cinematic Universe movie with pretty much an entirely new cast, next year s The Eternals (11/6/2020) has been the focus of multiple casting news stories this year. Individually, we re not sure any of them would have been enough to make our list of top stories for the year. And then, Kumail Nanjiani posted the images you can see on his Instagram account. When Nanjiani was first cast in The Eternals, it was probably safe to assume that he would basically look like the Kumail Nanjiani we ve grown accustomed to seeing in other projects like The Big Sick, Stuber, and HBO s Silicon Valley, so it was something of a shock to see him looking absolutely shredded. His co-stars in The Eternals include Angelina Jolie (Thena), Salma Hayek (Ajak), Gemma Chan (Sersi), and Game of Thrones stars Richard Madden (Ikaris) and Kit Harrington (The Black Knight), but we haven t heard yet about whether they re that buff yet. (Photo by HBO)Expectations for the final season of Game of Thrones were higher than the Red Keep’s tallest spire, and, unfortunately, fans and critics alike were not universally impressed with the way creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss ended the story. Unlike the previous seven seasons — all of which are Certified Fresh with Tomatometer scores well into the 90s — season 8 is not only the lowest-scoring season on the Tomatometer, it is also the first-ever Rotten season of HBO’s fantasy series.How does that work? Let s do a bit of math: While the average score of each of season 8’s episodes is a Fresh 68%, a number of season-level reviews (those that consider the season in its entirety) published following the finale have brought the overall season score down into the Rotten range.“This final season was all about big-huge set pieces, and a lot of the complexity burned away,” wrote Entertainment Weekly’s Darren Franich of the season as a whole. And Slate’s Willa Paskin noted in her review of the series finale, “Benioff and Weiss organized their entire series around an ending that they didn’t write to.”But Thrones is not the only beloved series that critics felt whiffed its final at-bat. Series with high expectations for their final episodes include everything from HBO’s bro-tastic showbiz satire Entourage to PBS’ prestige TV detective drama Sherlock. And though those expectations might not have been quite as high as the dizzying, dragon-y heights that GoT needed to live up to, both of those series similarly seemed to let down longtime viewers.Below, Rotten Tomatoes has gathered a list of beloved series whose early seasons were high-scoring and usually Certified Fresh — meaning they all received a large number of reviews, with many from top critics, and a score of more than 75% on the Tomatometer — and whose last season or two descended into Rotten territory. Some shows, like The Office, The West Wing, or How I Met Your Mother, managed to turn Rotten penultimate seasons around into Fresh final ones (which is why those three are not included below). As season 8’s Critics Consensus put it, “With Entourage s best stories behind it, the series finale feels like a merciful end.”Prison Break 60% (Photo by Fox)Highest-rated season: Prison Break: Season 1 (2005) 77%Final season: Prison Break: Season 4 (2008) 50%Drop: 27%The Fox drama’s self-explanatory title meant that the series was always going to have to fight against its own premise — there are only so many prisons to break out of, after all — but after a Certified Fresh debut season and a second installment that maintained the series’ “propulsive momentum,” per season 2’s CC, things went downhill. The third and fourth seasons were both Rotten at 50% — and while the original series finale delivered closure for fans, “the season s ludicrous, plot-breaking twists betray the feeling that this saga should have ended a jailbreak or two before.” Fox’s 2017 revival nearly a decade after the series’ original end, didn’t fare much better: “familiar faces and frenetic action aren t enough to make up for a plot that manages to bore while beggaring belief,” per the Critics Consensus.Like this? YORGOS LANTHIMOS ADAPTING HORROR WESTERN THE HAWKLINE MONSTER (Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)Not counting the recent rerelease of his 2005 film Kinetta, Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos is in the midst of a run of critically acclaimed films including The Lobster (Certified Fresh at 88%) and last year s The Favourite (Certified Fresh at 93%). Next up, Lanthimos is expected to direct a long-in-development crime drama based on the Jim Thompson novel Pop. 1280, but this week, he also boarded another project that dates back to the 1970s. Yorgos Lanthimos is now in talks to direct The Hawkline Monster, an adaptation of a novel by Richard Brautigan that combines elements of cowboy westerns and the gothic horror genre as two gunslingers investigate strange goings-on. The Hawkline Monster was a long-time project for director Hal Ashby (Being There, Harold and Maude) until his death in 1988, and the actors he hoped to direct as the gunslingers included Jack Nicholson, Dustin Hoffman, and brothers Beau and Jeff Bridges. It s not yet known whom Yorgos Lanthimos might cast, but one of his (relatively) frequent collaborators is Colin Farrell (The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer).2. KUMAIL NANJIANI S GETS RIPPED FOR MARVEL S THE ETERNALS (Photo by @kumailn/Instagram)When Kumail Nanjiani was first announced as being cast in Marvel s The Eternals (11/6/2020), a safe assumption may have been that he would basically look a lot like we ve seen him in other projects like The Big Sick, Stuber, and HBO s Silicon Valley. After all, most previous Marvel Cinematic Universe stars look basically the same as they do in other previous movies (we re looking at you, Paul Rudd). This week, Nanjiani took to Instagram to show off exactly what a year s worth of Marvel-backed personal training and nutrition have done for him. (You can read about his training and diet here.) Nanjiani s co-stars in The Eternals also include Angelina Jolie (Thena), Salma Hayek (Ajak), and Game of Thrones stars Richard Madden (Ikaris) and Kit Harrington (The Black Knight), but we haven t heard yet about whether they re that buff yet. For example, sometimes articles provide inspiration, as recently happened with Hustlers, which started as a New York Magazine piece. Just a year after her spectacular 2018 breakout (with Ocean s Eight and Crazy Rich Asians), Awkwafina is already working on guiding her own path by producing new roles for herself, as she is now attached to produce and star in an untitled adaptation of this Topic.com article, titled, How Chinese Food Fueled the Rise of California Punk. The film will tell the true stories of how early Los Angeles punk bands in the 1970s were able to find unlikely allies in Chinese restaurants in cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco (for example, bands like Fear, The Bags, and X played at L.A. s Hong Kong Cafe in June, 1979). It s not yet known if Awkwafina will be playing one of the punk rockers, or one of the young promoters who connected these two otherwise disparate communities.4. TOTALLY EXTREME JACKASS PRANKSTERS TO RETURN IN 2021 (Photo by Sean Cliver/©Paramount Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Next October will mark the 20th anniversary of the October 1, 2000 debut on MTV of the groundbreaking stunt comedy series Jackass, which soon after led to a series of successful movies. Not counting Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa, the most recent Jackass movie was Jackass 3D in 2010, which came out just a year before core Jackass performer Ryan Dunn s tragic death in 2011. Paramount Pictures announced this week that Johnny Knoxville and his fellow stuntmen will return for Jackass 4, which is now scheduled for release on March 5, 2021 (up against the Masters of the Universe reboot).
The 46th annual Telluride Film Festival wrapped this Monday and for the first time in recent memory, a pair of stars prompted the typically celebrity-averse attendees to throw convention out the window. The quiet rustic town, nestled high up in the Colorado mountains, is so small that hiding behind a velvet rope is nearly impossible; since it s one of the most in-demand stops on the fall awards circuit, A-listers typically walk the street with little fanfare. This year, however, first-time attendee Adam Sandler and Telluride alum Adam Driver were the toast of the town. Both were mobbed by uncharacteristically star-struck festivalgoers, and both just smiled through the attention.Billy Madison and Kylo Ren may have caused a brief departure from the norm, but this year s program remained unchanged in one way audiences were treated to exceptional films from auteur filmmakers. Sandwiched between the Toronto International and Venice Film Festivals, the laid-back fest remains a coveted stop on the way to Oscar glory, with eight of the last 10 Best Picture winners screened in Telluride. From what we heard and saw on the ground there, coupled with our Venice Scorecard tracking reviews for films premiering at that festival, some of our Ridiculously Early Oscar Predictions are looking more likely, while other Oscar hopefuls left their chances high atop the mountains. With a shortened season, the frontrunners will have to come out of the gates strong if they plan to stay in contention, and we can already see early trends and storylines emerging. Here are our key takeaways from this year s Telluride Film Festival as we head into Toronto.A Tale of Two Adams: Sandler, Driver In the Best Actor Race(Photo by © A24)Adam Sandler and Adam Driver took Telluride by storm. Sandler, who made the trek for the first time with the Safdie brothers Uncut Gems, was rewarded with the best reviews he s earned since Punch Drunk Love. As we mentioned in our Telluride preview, Uncut Gems enjoyed a buzzy world premiere, with much interest in what Sandler and the Safdies could bring, following the directing duo s breakout hit Good Time. The film stars Sandler as a fast-talking celebrity jeweler and places the audience in a state of constant tension for 135 minutes – a staple of the Safdies directing style. Sandler chatted, joked, and mingled with the festivalgoers as critics heralded his equally charismatic and frantic performance as the best work of his career. Uncut Gems is still Fresh at 100% on the Tomatometer, and many are signaling that the SNL alum could make his second visit to the Golden Globes (his first was for Punch) and maybe further.Though Sandler was clearly living his best life in Telluride, perhaps no one had a better weekend than Adam Driver. In addition to screening his two awards contenders, The Report and Marriage Story, the Star Wars star was also honored with a tribute handed to him by none other than Martin Scorsese. Scorsese, who directed Driver in Silence, proclaimed him to be the greatest actor of his generation, and the praise for Driver did not stop there. He garnered positive reviews for both of his films, though Netflix s Marriage Story, from Noah Baumbach, is clearly the stronger play for him to earn a Best Actor Oscar nomination at this point. Following his first nomination last year for BlacKkKlansman, the marine-turned-thespian is launching right back into the season with the full weight of the Netflix awards team behind him. Given the fact that he will also be right in heart of the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker press tour during the height of the awards season, Adam Driver will be the name on everyone’s (and every voter’s) lips.International Cannes Favorites Continue to Wow Critics(Photo by Dominique Charriau/WireImage)After their glamorous premieres on the French Riviera at the Cannes Film Festival, Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite and Céline Sciamma s Portrait of a Lady on Fire continued to wow critics at Telluride.Back at Cannes, Justin Chang of the Los Angeles Times compared Parasite to Jordan Peele’s Us: An escalating freak show of tension, surprise and class rage, Parasite would make a terrific double bill with Us, which it matches and perhaps even surpasses in impact. Also in May, Stephanie Zacharek was equally favorable to Portrait of a lady on Fire, calling it a great example of how a well-told story, with vivid characters, can seep right into your bones and keep you thinking for days afterward and the pleasure felt while watching it isn t negligible either. The overwhelmingly positive receptions out of Cannes came as no surprise to most, but the frenzied quests to see the films at Telluride were slightly unexpected. As word grew of the dual masterworks, screenings were reportedly turning people away. The last showing of Parasite turned away over 600, an astonishing number for the intimate festival. Bong, who many think will pull a Best Directing and possibly a Best Picture Oscar nomination for Parasite (a rare feat for an international film), appears to be very much undaunted by all the hype. When we chatted with him at Telluride, he was most interested in the other films on the slate, adding modestly, “I am just happy people like it. Like is a gross understatement for either film, both of which will have sizable awards campaigns, so don’t be surprised if they show up in the newly dubbed Best International Film category in 2020.Ford v. Ferrari Revs into the Oscar Voters ViewFord vs. Ferrari is the quintessential Hollywood Oscar movie. A true-life period-piece? Check. An A-list cast of Oscar winners/nominees? Check. A prestige director? Check. Aimed at older Oscar voters? Checkmate! With Ford v. Ferrari, director James Mangold and stars Matt Damon and Christian Bale look to repeat the same formula that spelled success for Clint Eastwood and Bradley Cooper in 2014 with American Sniper. The story of how the Ford motor company s Carroll Shelby (Damon) and Ken Miles (Bale) battled corporate interference, the laws of physics, and each other to topple racing Goliath Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans is very much on-brand for Oscar voters. It s this year s Moneyball with race cars, and Tomris Laffly of RogerEbert.com raved that it s a 60s-set adrenaline rusher with top-shelf technical craftsmanship. This one will look to pull accolades for those in front of and behind the camera.The Comeback Kid Preps for a Cinderella Story(Photo by JEAN-BAPTISTE LACROIX/AFP/Getty Images)Not to be outdone by Adams Driver and Sandler, Renée Zellweger also made a memorable trip to Telluride with Judy, whose positive reception confirmed our very own Bridget Jones has indeed returned. Zellweger is unrecognizable as the tragic starlet Judy Garland, and the performance (including the singing and dancing) is uncanny. As Gary Oldman did in Darkest Hour, Zellweger fades away, and you only see Judy, a part many are saying the Texas native was born to play. Erik Anderson of AwardsWatch said of Zellweger, [She] knows a bit about being chewed up and spit out by the Hollywood machine and the gaggle of media that want to focus on every flaw, every alleged surgery or unsuccessful marriage. It s part of what makes her the perfect choice to play Garland. After a string of sometimes downright nasty media coverage over the last few years, we are thrilled that Zellweger has reemerged better than ever in this second act of her storied career with two very different projects. Earlier this year she played a Gordon Gecko-styled femme fatale in Netflix’s What/If, and this week at Telluride we saw her inspired take on one of the world’s most beloved singer-actresses. Perhaps there’s really no need to call it comeback, but we re happy about it nevertheless.And the Oscar Goes to Netflix (Maybe)(Photo by © Netflix)Moments after Roma screened at Telluride in 2018, anyone who had the privilege to see it instantly understood why Netflix bristled at anyone discounting its cinematic brilliance. The hands-down favorite to win Best Picture on Oscar night, Alfonso Cuarón s semi-autobiographical retelling of his adolescence ultimately lost to Green Book, and many saw the decision as a rejection of the streaming giant Netflix, as opposed to a victory for the Peter Farrelly dramedy. The same scenario is taking shape for several Netflix films in 2020, as Marriage Story, The Two Popes, The King, Dolemite is My Name, and Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman are all poised to make deep runs this season. The question is, will it be enough for any of them to take home the top prize? The Academy rejected a rumored plan that would require a four-week streaming window for Oscar eligibility, but even campaigning from Martin Scorsese himself could persuade theater distributors AMC, Regal, and Cinemark to compromise and screen his film at their theaters. Regardless of where you land on the streaming debate, the final word may be given on Oscar night, and we can’t wait to watch.Awards Season Forecast Clears Up (And Waves makes a splash)(Photo by © A24)Prior to festival season, most awards predictions are about as scientific as tossing darts at a list of names; few films in the conversation have even screened before Telluride or Venice. Post-Telluride, however, the landscape pulls into focus. There’s always that one film no one saw coming, like Moonlight, or a film that surpasses all expectations, like Lady Bird, and more often than not, these films premiere at the Colorado festival. (It’s worth noting Lady Bird and Moonlight shot into the awards conversation due in large part to their rapturous Telluride debuts.) This year’s discovery is undoubtedly Waves by Trey Edward Shults, the seemingly fearless filmmaker behind horror movie It Comes At Night whose unconventional stories are wholly unique. Sheri Linden of The Hollywood Reporter proclaimed Waves as further evidence that Shults, at 30, is one of the most versatile and gifted young filmmakers working today. Little was known about the plot or premise of Shults sophomore effort, but following the premiere (for all those who seek to watch it, we advise going in blind), there was no shortage of praise for stars Sterling K. Brown, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and newcomer Taylor Russell. Waves is a dark horse contender for end-of-year awards, but still very much in the race.Like this?
