Production has wrapped on Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of The Witcher, and star Henry Cavill celebrated with a lengthy Instagram post about his experience filming the series. The takeaway: “All of those 3 am wake ups were worth it,” he writes. The Good Fight to Air on CBS(Photo by Patrick Harbron/CBS)The Good Fight is getting its on-air debut: CBS announced that the CBS All Access legal drama, a spinoff of its critically acclaimed legal drama The Good Wife, will be broadcast on CBS this summer. It’ll be the first series from CBS’ streaming service, which is also home to Star Trek: Discovery and the Twilight Zone reboot, to air on the network. While there are three seasons available on CBS All Access, CBS will air season 1 of The Good Fight. For three seasons, The Good Fight has been a big success for CBS All Access,” CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl said in a press release announcing the news. “We’re excited to provide our network audience the opportunity to catch up with characters they first fell in love with on The Good Wife, as well as introduce new viewers to this outstanding, critically acclaimed drama.”Alex Trebek’s Cancer Is Almost in Remission(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Q: What is good news? A: Alex Trebek’s latest announcement that his cancer is on its way out. The Jeopardy! host told People that although he was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer three months ago, he’s in “near remission” and “some of the tumors have already shrunk by more than 50 percent.”No, Really, What Just Happened??!(Photo by Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)Fox’s upcoming experimental comedy What Just Happened??! — a faux-aftershow about a fictional series, hosted by Fred Savage (playing himself), has added a few more head-scratching details. Joining Savage as “host” will be comedian Taylor Tomlinson, and the two will be joined by Best Coast as the house band. The series is dedicated to exploring the fandom surrounding The Flare, a fictional drama based on a fictional sci-fi book series by fictional author TJ Whitford, “The Moon is the Sun at Night,” which, according to the press release announcing the very meta news, “has been a favorite of Fred Savage’s since childhood. The book revolves around a solar event and its effects on Earth – specifically, the small, blue-collar town of Milford, IL – and slowly unfolds into a post-apocalyptic battle for human survival.” What Just Happened??! will feature “multiple segments, including authentic sit-down celebrity interviews, set visits to The Flare and interviews with the ‘cast,’ as well as discussions with fans and more.” It premieres Sunday, June 30 on Fox.According to Entertainment Weekly, The Flare’s cast includes Shiri Appleby, Guillermo Diaz, Kevin Zegers, Duane Reed, Sola Bamis, Tyler Ritter, Sprague Grayden, and Amy Acker.Casting News: Creepshow, The Right Stuff, and MoreThe Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot BH90210, a mockumentary-style series featuring the main cast members attempting to launch a revival of their beloved teen soap, has cast La La Anthony and Vanessa Lachey to play the wives of Brian Austin Green and Jason Priestley, respectively. Anthony is music superstar Shay, and Lachey is high-powered publicist Camille. (No word on whether Green’s real-life wife, Megan Fox, will appear in the series.)National Geographic’s adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s The Right Stuff has tapped former Suits star Patrick J. Adams to play Maj. John Glenn in the series adaptation of the bestseller. “The series takes a clear-eyed look at what would become America’s first ‘reality show,’ as ambitious astronauts and their families become instant celebrities in a competition that will either kill them or make them immortal in the quest to be a part of Project Mercury,” according to the official description. Production will begin in Florida in the fall and the series is set to premiere on National Geographic in 2020.Variety reports that The Princess Bride’s Cary Elwes and The Path’s Stephanie Hsu will appear in season 3 of Amazon Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.Downton Abbey’s Jessica Brown Findlay will star in USA Network’s adaptation of Brave New World alongside Alden Ehrenreich and Harry Lloyd. She’ll play Lenina Crowne, a resident of utopian New London, a city with a rigid social order and “culture of instant gratification and ubiquitous sex,” per the official description. But after a trip to the Savage Lands, they become embroiled in a rebellion and begin to question the lives they’ve known.Streaming service Shudder s upcoming series adaptation of Creepshow has cast David Arquette, Tricia Helfer, and Dana Gould in three different installments of the horror series. Arquette will star in Times is Tough in Musky Holler, about  leaders who once controlled a town through fear and intimidation get[ting] a taste of their own medicine Helfer will star in Lydia Layne’s Better Half, in which a powerful woman denies a promotion to her protégée and lover but fails to anticipate the fallout and Gould is in Skincrawlers, featuring a man who considers a miraculous new treatment for weight loss that turns out to have unexpected complications. Desus and Mero are set to host the 2019 TCA Awards on Saturday, Aug. 3. They follow in the footsteps of former TCA hosts Kristin Chenoweth, James Corden, Terry Crews, Key Peele, and more celebs who have emceed the annual (untelevised) Television Critics Association honors, which is held every summer in Beverly Hills. The Kissing Booth 2 has added a pair of cast members: #LegendsOfTomorrow alum @maisie_rs will play a seemingly-perfect college girl who Noah grows close to while Taylor Perez will play Marco, a new classmate who Elle simultaneously develops a close friendship with. pic.twitter.com/CO8YdWHQwd See What s Next (@seewhatsnext) May 30, 2019Development Update: Normal People and MoreHulu has ordered a half-hour series based on Sally Rooney s Normal People, about “the tender but complicated relationship of Marianne (played by Gentleman Jack s Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Connell (newcomer Paul Mescal) from the end of their school days in a small-town west of Ireland to their undergraduate years at Trinity College.”Lilly Wachowski is returning to TV for her first project post-Sense8: the new half-hour comedy series Work in Progress, which will premiere on Showtime later this year. The series debuted as part of the indie episodic program at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, and was created by Abby McEnany and Tim Mason. McEnany stars as “a 45-year-old self-identified fat, queer dyke from Chicago whose misfortune and despair unexpectedly lead her to a vibrantly transformative relationship.” Wachowski will co-write the first season and executive produce alongside the creators.Netflix has optioned three novels by YA author Sarah Dessen to be made into movies for the streaming service (following in the footsteps of the successful To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, which is getting a sequel this year). The author’s titles being adapted for the screen include This Lullaby, Once and for All, and Along for the Ride, the latter of which will be the first to become a film. This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering movies based on true stories like Boston Strangler, I Wanna Dance with Somebody, Oppenheimer, and The Woman King. This WEEK S TOP STORYCILLIAN MURPHY CONFIRMED AS CHRISTOPHER NOLAN S OPPENHEIMER (Photo by Everett Collection)Throughout Hollywood s long history of making movies about real life figures, it s a lingering complaint that actors frequently do not look like the real life figures that they are portraying. For Oppenheimer, about the life of the father of the atomic bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer, director Christopher Nolan appears to be sidestepping such criticisms by casting frequent collaborator Cillian Murphy, who played his Scarecrow in Batman Begins, as the titular scientist, and the resemblance is sort of uncanny. Universal Pictures has scheduled Oppenheimer for release on July 21, 2023, which puts it around the same late July slot when many of Christopher Nolan s films have been released (Interstellar was on 7/21/2017, and The Dark Knight Rises was on 7/20/2012). Oppenheimer will start filming in early 2022 on IMAX cameras and with a budget of over 0 million. In related news, the Peaky Blinders movie, also starring Cillian Murphy, was confirmed this week to start filming in 18 months (in 2023), after the show s sixth and final season wraps.Other Top Headlines1. KEIRA KNIGHTLEY TO STAR IN SERIAL KILLER TRUE STORY BOSTON STRANGLER(Photo by Barry Wetcher/©Warner Bros.)Although several others have possibly eclipsed his notoriety, the argument can be made that the early 1960s murders ascribed to The Boston Strangler left an indelible mark on the 1960s, including the 1968 film The Boston Strangler (Fresh at 86%), starring Tony Curtis. Filmmaker Ridley Scott is set to produce a new film called Boston Strangler via his Scott Free Productions for 20th Century Studios, and Keira Knightley is the film s first announced star as Loretta McLaughlin, the first reporter to connect the murders and break the story of the Strangler. Writer/director Matt Ruskin (Crown Heights, Certified Fresh at 77%) will adapt the Boston Strangler screenplay and direct when filming starts on location in Boston in December, 2021. The role of Alberto DeSalvo, the Boston Strangler himself, has not yet been cast.2. WHITNEY HOUSTON BIOPIC CASTS THREE KEY REAL LIFE ROLES (Photo by ©A24)The Whitney Houston biopic I Wanna Dance with Somebody (12/23/2022) is now filming at locations in Boston and New Jersey, but until this week, several key roles in Houston s life remained unfilled (or at least, unannounced). Let s start with Robyn Crawford, Houston s longtime assistant, who will be played by Nafessa Williams (Thunder on TV s Black Lightining), after the role s first actress, Moses Ingram, recently parted ways with the role. From the same announcement, we also now know that Whitney s parents, John and Cissy Houston, will be played by Clarke Peters (Lester Freamon from HBO s The Wire) and Tamara Tunie (Dr. Melinda Warner from TV s Law Order: Special Victims Unit). That news all came out on Monday, and then yesterday, we learned that the role of Houston s daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown will be played by 15-year-old Brian Danielle Singleton, who played the young Octavia Spencer in the superhero movie Thunder Force. Comedian Eddie Murphy will also be a character in I Wanna Dance with Somebody, and he will be played by Jimmie Fails, who co-starred in and co-wrote The Last Black Man in San Francisco (Certified Fresh at 92%). Those five actors join other already announced cast members Naomi Ackie (Whitney Houston), Ashton Sanders (Bobby Brown), and Stanley Tucci (Clive Davis).3. SAM RAIMI PRODUCING DYSTOPIAN THRILLER BOY KILLS WORLD (Photo by ©Universal courtesy Everett Collection)Filmmaker Sam Raimi is currently deep into post-production on his return to Marvel as the director of the sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (3/25/2022), but that isn t preventing him from occasionally producing other directors projects. Raimi s production company is just one of the partners on a new dystopian thriller called Boy Kills World, which will soon start filming on location in South Africa. Bill Skarsgard (Pennywise in IT) will play the title character, Boy, a deaf mute with a vibrant imagination who escapes into the jungle when his family is murdered. Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) will also co-star as an assassin in Boy Kills World, which will be the feature film debut of German filmmaker Moritz Mohr.4. TILDA SWINTON AND GEORGE MACKAY LEAD POST-APOCALYPTIC MUSICAL IN THE END (Photo by Olivier Huitel/Avalon Photoshot, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Sometimes, we are blessed with bizarre but amusing coincidences in the movie news world. For example, we just learned some big news about Christopher Nolan s Oppenheimer, which of course centers on a scientist who feared the end of the world. This same week, we also learned that director Joshua Oppenheimer no relation to J. Robert (we think) is preparing his next movie, and it will be a post-apocalyptic musical about the last human family on Earth. Titled The End, this will be Oppenheimer s first narrative feature; he previously directed the Oscar-nominated documentaries The Act of Killing (Certified Fresh at 95%) and The Look of Silence (Certified Fresh at 96%). Tilda Swinton will star in The End with George MacKay (1918) and Stephen Graham (Al Capone in HBO s Boardwalk Empire) as the last human family when filming starts sometime in 2022.5. THREE RISING STARS JOIN AFRICAN HISTORICAL EPIC THE WOMAN KING (Photo by ©IFC Films)We haven t seen many historical epics in recent years, but there was a time when they regularly racked up end-of-year awards and critical acclaim. One notable project still in the works despite this apparent downward trend, though, is The Woman King, about the Kingdom of Dahomey in the 18th and 19th centuries, which had an all-female military unit that may have inspired the Dora Milaje in Marvel s Black Panther. We ve known for a while that the lead role will be played by Viola Davis, and recent weeks have also seen the announcement of other actors like Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel) and John Boyega as King Ghazo. This week, the film s ensemble cast was further filled out by three rising phenoms in Jayme Lawson (Bella Real in the upcoming The Batman), Hero Fiennnes Tiffin (the nephew of Ralph Fiennes) and Masali Baduza (BBC s Noughts Crosses). The Woman King will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Old Guard, The Secret Life of Bees) for Sony/TriStar.6. EMMA STONE PRODUCING A24 HORROR I SAW THE TV GLOW (Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)There are two companies that are now arguably most identified with horror namely Blumhouse and A24 and the types of horror stories that these two companies produce also couldn t be more different. Blumhouse does big concept horror like Get Out, The Purge, and The Invisible Man, while A24 produces films that fall into either indie or folk horror (or both) like The Witch, Hereditary, and Midsommar. Emma Stone s Fruit Tree production company is now collaborating with A24 on a new horror film called I Saw the TV Glow about two teenage outcasts who bond over their shared love of a scary television show, but the boundary between TV and reality begins to blur after it is mysteriously canceled. I Saw the TV Glow will be the second feature film from writer/director Jane Schoenbrun, whose We re All Going to the World s Fair (Fresh at 88%) debuted at the Sundance Film Festival this year.7. GREEN BOOK DIRECTOR ADAPTING FRENCH TIME TRAVEL MOVIE (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)To his credit, few people probably could have ever guessed that Peter Farrelly, the director of Dumb and Dumber and The Three Stooges, would go ont to direct a film that would win three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, but that s exactly what he did with Green Book (Certified  Fresh at 77%) in 2018. With that in mind, perhaps it shouldn t be so surprising that Farrelly is now negotiating to direct an English language remake of the 2006 French time travel drama Seras-tu La. That film was about a 60-year-old widower in 2006 who gets the chance to travel 30 years backwards in time to attempt to prevent the death of his wife in 1976. In the meantime, Farrelly is currently filming The Greatest Beer Run Ever, based on the true story of a man who traveled to Vietnam in 1967 to visit his friends who were actively fighting in the Vietnam War.8. JAKE GYLLENHAAL TO STAR IN ADAPTATION OF PROPHET FROM DEADPOOL CO-CREATOR (Photo by Anne Marie Fox/TM & ©Copyright Fox Searchlight)Much can be argued about comic books of the late 1980s and early 1990s, but for the actual writers and artists who create comics, it all started to change in 1992 when a handful of the most popular young creators broke away from DC and Marvel to form their own company, called Image Comics. One of those Image co-founders was Rob Liefeld, who, during his time at Marvel, co-created Deadpool. For several years now, Liefeld has been working on getting movie deals for his own creations, and it sounds like one of them will finally start filming soon. Jake Gyllenhaal is now signed to star in Prophet, based on Liefeld s comic book of the same title, to be directed by former Marvel Studios stunt coordinator-turned director Sam Hargrave (Extraction, Fresh at 67%). Gyllenhaal will star as John Prophet, a man conscripted by Germans near the end of World War II and subjected to scientific experiments that gave him superhuman strength (basically like Captain America, if he were a Nazi) who then wakes up 20 years later in 1965. In the comics, John Prophet wears a purple-and-gold outfit with a haircut that has to be seen to be comprehended, but Jake Gyllenhaal s movie look will probably be different. On an Apple device? Between The Umbrella Academy, Doom Patrol, and Amazon’s upcoming The Boys, being a hero isn’t just about flying around, saving the day, and hiding yourself from your closest loved ones. And as The Boys teaser trailer Amazon recently unveiled illustrates, being a hero comes with plenty of “fringe” benefits: including a club where heroes can use their powers in all sorts of debauched ways, a voyeur with invisibility abilities, and various other abuses of powers. But that hedonism comes at a price as the titular Boys set out to knock some sense into the superhero community. But there’s more to The Boys than that NSFW trailer suggests. Here’s everything we know about the subversive superhero series, which debuts Friday, July 26 on Amazon Prime Video.Another Preacher Collaboration(Photo by Amazon)As the trailer boldly touts, the hourlong comic book adaptation comes from executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, who finally brought Preacher to the screen after a long gestation with other producers. But the series also comes from the same source as Preacher (pictured above): the comic books of writer Garth Ennis. With artist Darick Robertson, Ennis set out to blast the superheroes apart in 2006 with The Boys. The title was initially published by DC Comic’s Wildstorm imprint, but was cancelled after six issues. According to reports at the time, DC brass became uncomfortable with the series after noticing its corrupt superhero team bore an uncanny resemblance to the Justice League. And considering the first thing the team does is coerce an obvious Stargirl analogue into performing oral sex on them, it is hardly a surprise DC would cancel it outright.Ennis and Robertson soon found another publisher —Dynamite Entertainment — and continued their story for another 60-odd issues. Of course, as often happens with Ennis’ work, the coarseness of its initial story lines gave way to something more nuanced and considered, an element of his writing Rogen and Goldberg clearly enjoy as they keep adapting his comics into television.Cutting Down the SuperheroesThe television version stars Jack Quaid as Hughie, a blissfully happy human whose life turns to crud when his girlfriend is obliterated before his eyes by A-Train (Jesse T. Usher). The speedster hardly takes a moment to consider his actions before running off at superspeed to continue his pursuit of a perp. And while the scene was shocking to comic book readers — and will eventually be shocking to viewers — it is hardly an uncommon occurrence in the world of The Boys. In fact, a shell-shocked Hughie soon finds himself confronted with a standardized settlement agreement from Vought, the management company that represents and promotes the superheroes. He also meets Billy Butcher (Karl Urban), a government agent with a mandate to clip the superhero wings when they get too rowdy. He intends to recruit Hughie into his cadre known as The Boys because revenge is a great motivator. The team also includes Laz Alonso as Mother’s Milk, Butcher’s most trusted ally; Tomer Kapon as unstable weaponsmith Frenchie; and Karen Fukuhara as Female, a quiet killer repurposed into Butcher’s plans for the superheroes. Jennifer Esposito will also appear as CIA Agent Susan Raynor, Butcher’s somewhat unwilling accomplice within the Company. The Light of the SevenThe Boys also focuses on the exploits of those very flawed and corruptible heroes. In the comic book, Starlight (played by Erin Moriarty in the television series) becomes our window into the worldview of the superhero team known as The Seven — which we presume will carry over to television as Starlight is described as a lead role.More akin to a superstar NFL team during a winning season than the Avengers, The Seven bicker about percentages, likeness rights, and their next movie role more than they maintain the safety of the planet. Thanks to the simultaneously beautiful and grotesque artwork from Robertson, the reader is left to wonder if such a team even needs supervillains to fight. They do a great job of being their own worst enemies. As mentioned before, the team is composed of some fairly obvious Justice League stand-ins, including Homelander (Antony Starr), Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott), the aforementioned A-Train, The Deep (Chase Crawford), and Black Noir (Nathan Mitchell). From the trailer, it is easy to see corrupted versions of Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, and Batman in their aesthetics. And also like a major league sports team, The Seven’s destiny is not theirs to control. In the television series, Elizabeth Shue plays Madelyn Stillwell, Vice President of Hero Management at Vought. She plots the team’s adventures and maintains public relations for them when incidents like A-Train atomizing Hughie’s girlfriend occurs. But she is also a cog in the Vought machinery and may have motives differing from her superiors. The Significance of Simon Pegg(Photo by Astrid Stawiarz/Getty Images)In the early 2000s, capturing a celebrity’s likeness was all the rage in comic books. Marvel s The Ultimates featured Samuel L. Jackson’s visage as its version of Nick Fury well before he was cast in the role. Ultimates writer Mark Millar would continue the trick with Wanted, in which the main character bore an intentional resemblance to Eminem and the story s take on Catwoman featured a woman who looked very much like Halle Berry. On The Boys, Robertson, a big fan of Shaun of the Dead, decided to use Simon Pegg as the basis for Hughie – known as “Wee Hughie” in the book. Pegg was thrilled to become a comic book character and told fans he would gleefully play Wee Hughie in a Boys film should it ever get off the ground. Then Pegg aged out of the role, illustrating just how long it can take for a comic book to become a live action project. But Amazon thrilled fans by revealing Pegg’s presence would still be part of The Boys television destiny. At New York Comic Con last October, they announced the actor would play Hughie’s father. It is an important visual connection to the books history fans will no doubt enjoy when they finally get to see the show.Irreverence Is on Display, But It s Not All The Boys Has to Offer

4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Ancient Aliens, Indiana Jones 5, Peeps, and Saw X.This WEEK S TOP STORYPHOEBE WALLER-BRIDGE JOINS HARRISON FORD IN NEXT INDIANA JONES(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)It appears that Phoebe Waller-Bridge may not be reprising her role as the star and writer of Amazon s Fleabag beyond its first two seasons any time soon (or ever), but we will definitely see her in other high-profile projects. In addition to co-writing Daniel Craig s last James Bond film, No Time to Die (and voicing L3-37 in Solo: A Star Wars Story), Waller-Bridge will co-star with Donald Glover in Amazon Studios upcoming reboot of Mr. + Mrs. Smith.  This week, however, she landed what might be her highest profile project ever, as she will be joining Harrison Ford as what is apparently the female lead in the not-yet-titled fifth Indiana Jones (7/29/2022) movie. Although Steven Spielberg was at one point expected to direct, he will be shepherding the film as producer instead, with James Mangold (Logan, The Wolverine, Ford v Ferrari) directing the sequel instead. Harrison Ford will turn 80 years old on July 13, 2022, 16 days before the current release date for Indiana Jones 5. Lucasfilm has not yet revealed any details about the premise or setting of the movie, but based on Ford s age, one could guess that it might sometime in the 1970s or even the 1980s. We also learned this week that composer John Williams will be returning to give the classic Indiana Jones theme an update. Finally, in related news, the project that Steven Spielberg will be working on this summer instead of directing Indiana Jones 5 will be his untitled drama based on his youth in Arizona, and the latest star Spielberg has cast is Paul Dano, who will be playing the fictionalized version of Spielberg s father. Dano joins the already cast Michelle Williams as Spielberg s mother and Seth Rogen as Spielberg s favorite uncle.Other Top Headlines1. OLIVIA COLMAN TO CELEBRATE THE MOVIES IN EMPIRE OF LIGHT (Photo by Sophia Mutevelian/©Netflix)You would think, for as many movies there are about filmmaking, there would be more than just a few films that are actually about movie theaters (examples include The Majestic, Cinema Paradiso, Matinee, and partially, Inglourious Basterds). Director Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall) appears determined to increase that tally by one as he has written (in what will mark his first credit as a film s screenwriter) and will direct a romantic drama called Empire of Light, set at a movie theater in England in the 1980s. Olivia Colman will star in Empire of Light in an unspecified role, and the Searchlight Pictures film will be shot by Mendes frequent cinematographer, Roger Deakins (Revolutionary Road, Blade Runner 2049, 1918), when filming starts on location later this fall.2. NETFLIX MAKES FIVE YEAR DEAL WITH SONY THAT INCLUDES MORBIUS AND UNCHARTED (Photo by Sony Pictures Entertainment)Over the last year or two, as big studios launched their own streaming services, just a few major distributors remain that didn t follow suit (namely Sony, MGM, and Lionsgate), not counting pay TV providers like Starz (which is owned by Lionsgate, and with which Sony has had a deal since 2006). We now know why Sony never announced their own streaming service, as the studio has instead signed an exclusive five-year licensing deal with Netflix that will begin in 2022 and will include such upcoming Sony movies as Marvel s Morbius, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2, and the video game adaptation Uncharted. This deal basically positions Netflix as the main streamer that will have Marvel movies other than Disney+, as Sony will continue to have their own slate of Marvel Comics adaptations (Marvel projects in development at Sony include Jackpot, Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, Silk, and Spider-Woman). Other Sony franchises that are likely to have new films released as part of this five-year deal include Bad Boys, Ghostbusters, Goosebumps, and Jumanji. This comes just one week after Netflix acquired the Knives Out sequels in a massive 9 deal, which we learned this week included 0 million payouts to just three people: star Daniel Craig, director Rian Johnson, and producer Ram Bergman. Lionsgate, the distributor of Knives Out, did bid on the sequels but lost out to Netflix.3. AN ANCIENT ALIENS MOVIE IS IN DEVELOPMENT(Photo by Paul Butterfield/Getty Images)Even if you ve never seen any episodes of the 16 (!) seasons of the documentary series Ancient Aliens, you may have seen memes featuring wild-haired ufologist Giorgio A. Tsoukalos, or perhaps the Viceland series Traveling the Stars: Action Bronson and Friends Watch Ancient Aliens. As the title suggests, Ancient Aliens explores theories that ancient civilizations were visited and influenced by aliens as a way to explain amazing achievements, as first popularized in the 1970s by Chariots of the Gods. Just last week, Godzilla vs. Kong (Certified Fresh at 75%) featured a setting with a mysteriously unexplained ancient temple, and now that film s production company, Legendary Entertainment, is collaborating with the producers of Cobra Kai (Fresh at 93%) for a feature film based on Ancient Aliens. Luke Ryan, who served as executive producer on Harold Kumar Go to White Castle, is now working on adapting Ancient Aliens as a two-handed, globe-spanning adventure, which sort of makes it sound a bit like National Treasure, but with the Ancient Aliens guy. No casting announcements have been made yet, but we re imagining Nicolas Cage would be perfect for something like Ancient Aliens.4. HELEN MIRREN TO STAR AS ISRAELI PRIME MINSTER GOLDA MEIR (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Although there are still many large nations that have never had female presidents or prime ministers (you might be living in one right now), this was a distinction that Israel overcame as early as 1969, when Golda Meir became Israel s fourth Prime Minster. Meir s five years as Prime Minister included the Yom Kippur War of 1973, and now that period is going to be depicted in a biopic called Golda, starring Helen Mirren. Golda will be directed by Israeli filmmaker Guy Nattiv, who won an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film for Skin, working from a screenplay by screenwriter Michael Kuhn (Florence Foster Jenkins, The Duchess). Although described as a biopic, Golda will focus on how Meir led her nation during the Yom Kippur War despite infighting from her all-male cabinet. Barbra Streisand is also currently developing a TV series about Golda Meir starring Shira Haas (Unorthodox) in a more expansive story that includes her life as a young woman in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.5. BREAKOUT BORAT STAR MARIA BAKALOVA SEES BODIES, BODIES, BODIES(Photo by IngleDodd Media/Getty Images)It happens every year (although it s a little later this year), as Academy Award nominees or winners start to see new deals come their way as a result of their elevated profile during awards season. Besides the most obvious factor of the COVID-19 pandemic, another difference this year is that one of the Academy Award-nominated movies is Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (Certified Fresh at 85%), for which Bulgaria s Maria Bakalova is nominated. One might usually expect a new Academy Award nominee to sign up for something like a stuffy period film, but instead, Bakalova is attached to star in a slasher film for A24 (Midsommar) called Bodies, Bodies, Bodies. Bakalova s other main co-star will be Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give), and Pete Davidson (Saturday Night Live, The King of Staten Island) and Myha la Herrold are also in talks. No details have been revealed as of yet about the film s premise (other than it s a secret stalker that A24 has been putting together for several months now), and that it will be directed by Dutch filmmaker (Instinct, Fresh at 80%).6. LETITIA WRIGHT TO STAR AS HALF OF THE SILENT TWINS(Photo by Marvel Studios)Marvel Studios and director Ryan Coogler are expected to start filming the sequel Black Panther II in July, and one of the stars expected to return for a significant role is Letitia Wright, who played T Challa s sister Shuri in the first film. This week, we learned that one of the projects Wright recently filmed in Portland, Oregon before heading back to Wakanda is a fact-based drama called Silent Twins. Focus Features has picked up the worldwide rights to Silent Twins, which is based on the true stories of June and Jennifer Gibbons, who were identical twins who were part of the only black family in a small town in Wales. It s being reported that the sisters will be played by Letitia Wright and Tamara Lawrence, which is a little confusing since Wright and Lawrence don t really look like each other (unless, perhaps, they play the sisters at different ages?). The title Silent Twins refers to the fact that the two girls refused to talk to anyone else besides each other.7. NO KID(DING), NO PLAY(ING), HOUSE PARTY IS GETTING REBOOTED (Photo by ©New Line Cinema courtesy Everett Collection)Not all 1990s stars remain as famous as others. For example, Will Smith is still pretty much an A-list star, but knowing who Christopher Reid and Christopher Martin were will probably score you some points at your local trivia night. Together, the two Christophers were known as the hip hop group Kid n Play, and in addition to their musical career, they were also the stars of the first three House Party movies (House Party, Fresh at 93%; House Party 2, Rotten at 21%; House Party 3, Rotten at 0%). New Line Cinema and producer LeBron James have been quietly developing a House Party reboot for a few years now, and this week, the reboot got closer to filming as the two leads have been cast. The new House Party stars will be relative unknowns Jorge Lendeborg Jr. and Tosin Cole, and the director will be music video director Calmatic, who will be making his feature film directorial debut.  Jorge Lendeborg Jr. s highest profile role to date was probably as Hailee Steinfeld s friend Memo in Bumblebee, and Tosin Cole is probably best known for playing the companion Ryan Sinclair on 22 episodes of Doctor Who from 2018 to 2021.8. SAW X ALREADY IN DEVELOPMENT (Photo by Lionsgate courtesy Everett Collection)More so than any other genre, horror franchises sometimes seem critic-proof when it comes to their ability to continue getting new sequels produced in perpetuity. For example, none of the Saw movies has ever scored a Tomatometer higher than the Rotten 49% for the very first Saw, and yet, next month s Spiral: From the Book of Saw will be the ninth movie in the franchise. According to the film industry magazine Production Weekly, active development has begun on a mysterious project called Saw X, which, presumably, is exactly what it sounds like. There s not really much else to go on right now, including whether it will be a continuation of the characters introduced in Spiral: From the Book of Saw, which include roles played by Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson.9. CAN 700 MILLION PEEPS FANS BE WRONG? (Photo by William Thomas Cain/Getty Images)The bird-shaped marshmallow candy brand Peeps is obviously popular, based just on the claim that Peeps Incorporated sells over 700 million Peeps each year (admittedly a lot less than the number they make, which is reportedly over 2 billion). Having said that, Peeps is not inherently a narrative brand, since they re literally just birds in bright neon-colored marshmallow form, but that also didn t stop the Trolls dolls from getting their own animated movie (and a sequel and a spinoff series). And so, yes, Peeps is now in development as an animated movie to be produced by the team that gave us The Mauritanian (Fresh at 73%), which recently won Jodie Foster a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. A representative for Just Born, the company behind Peeps, had this to say: Peeps Chicks and Bunnies have been ingrained in American pop culture for nearly seven decades due to their instantly recognizable shapes and fan-favorite marshmallow taste, making them the perfect characters to bring to life on the big screen.

(Photo by Warner Bros. / courtesy Everett Collection)All Margot Robbie Movies Ranked by TomatometerIt only took two years after an eyebrow-raising entrance in The Wolf of Wall Street for Margot Robbie to become a big-enough known entity to cameo in movies as herself, like she did in 2015 s The Big Short. And by 2018, she was an Oscar-nominated actress thanks to I, Tonya. She ll also be a fixture at this year s ceremony: Robbie was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Bombshell, while her portrayal as Sharon Tate was one of the sentimental cruxes of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which is up for Best Picture.In-between all of this, Robbie also became one of the shining stars of the DC Extended Universe as Harley Quinn, stealing the show in Suicide Squad, with an upgrade to lead status in Birds of Prey. And she was again one of the best parts of The Suicide Squad. Now, we re ranking all Margot Robbie movies by Tomatometer!
Join us weekly as Rotten Tomatoes reports on what s indie features are streaming. From promising releases by new voices to experimental efforts from storied filmmakers – or perhaps the next indie darling to go the distance for end-of-year accolades – we will break it all down for you here each week. For the foreseeable future, the specialty box office and all theatrical releases will be on hold as we all make efforts to socially distance ourselves and reduce the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. With that in mind, we have reshaped our Indie Fresh List. This week we have a slam poetry doc, a haunted house horror film, and a biopic about Madam Curie. In our Spotlight section, we have Dave Franco s directorial debut film about a creepy Airbnb. In our Indie Trailer section, we have new clips from films starring Brenton Thwaites, Tobias Menzies, and Jackass Steve-O.Streaming This Weekend
ers. The pandemic matters. While we can probably expect another strongly-worded “I told you so” from the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) this week, the numbers do not lie. Streaming or not, since the end of June, when F9 opened, only two films have grossed more than 2.5 times its opening weekend: The Boss Baby: Family Business (3.42x), which was also streaming for free on Peacock, and The Forever Purge (3.47x), which was exclusively in theaters. Here is a breakdown of the rest.THEATER EXCLUSIVEF9 (2.43 / 7 weeks)Old (2.27 / 3 weeks)Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins (1.94 / 3 weeks)Escape Room: Tournament of Champions (2.51 / 4 weeks)The Green Knight (1.77 / 2 weeks)Stillwater (1.92 / 2 weeks)DISNEY PREMIER ACCESSBlack Widow (2.16 / 5 weeks)Jungle Cruise (1.86 / 2 weeks)HBO MAX (SINCE GODZILLA VS. KONG)Mortal Kombat (1.81)Those Who Wish Me Dead (2.59)The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2.70)In the Heights (2.58)Space Jam: A New Legacy (2.08 / 4 weeks)But let’s not let the HBO Max decision off the hook either. Repeat business seems to be at a stand still until we get a true all-clear on COVID and Delta, and streaming only doubles down on that. So the opening weekend is more crucial than ever before. The Suicide Squad is just the seventh film during this time to start with over million, joining HBO Max compatriots Godzilla vs. Kong and Space Jam: A New Legacy. The former stretched its legs through a still-wide open marketplace while vaccine hope was at its peak; the latter dropped like a stone and may end up with the worst multiple for a family film this year.We could just drop all the variables and statistics and know that in our hearts, Gunn’s film goes nowhere south of million in normal times. And that is as conservative as it gets. The top “R”-rated opening in August is still Straight Outta Compton, with .2 million, so it s hard to even suggest that a high-profile DC film whose almost universally-maligned “PG-13” effort is the highest opening weekend ever in August with 3.68 million wouldn t make  million or more. Not when both Deadpools opened to over 5 million, Joker to over million, and Logan with .4 million. The only thing we know for sure is that this year, in our current circumstances, The Suicide Squad will not be joining the 0 million club and the odds are very much in favor that nothing from the rest of Warner Brothers lineup for 2021 will be invited in either. The Top Ten And Beyond: Jungle Cruise Sailing Towards 0 Million Last week’s no. 1 film is showing some potential to eventually join the 0 million club. Jungle Cruise fell 55% to .7 million this weekend. In this environment that actually constitutes a victory given that it is the lowest drop for a no. 1 film in its second weekend since Spiral fell 47.5% from a meager start of .7 million. That puts Jungle’s 10-day toll at million, which is ahead of Godzilla vs. Kong’s .05 million at 10 days, though with that film’s Wednesday opening it only had four weekend days to accumulate that total compared to Jungle’s six. Nevertheless, it is still a better second weekend than GvK’s .88 million, so we’ll give Jungle Cruise a puncher’s chance of breaking that ceiling.M. Night Shyamalan’s Old fell back just a single spot for the third straight week. It is right in line with The Forever Purge’s third weekend of .1 million. Overall, it is still ahead of that film’s pace by almost million, so look for Old’s final tally to be in the range of million, just getting over Lady in the Water’s total and avoiding being the lowest-grossing film of Shyamalan’s post-Sixth Sense career. Black Widow dropped to fourth place with million, which is the third-best fifth weekend this year behind A Quiet Place Part II (.19 million) and F9 (.82 million). Still, it did pass F9 this week and now certainly has a lock to claim the crown of summer champion, not to mention fairly decent odds to compete for the highest-grossing film of the year, with possibly No Time to Die and Spider-Man: No Way Home as its biggest challengers.(Photo by © A24)Amongst last weekend’s adult entries, Stillwater dropped 45% to .86 million and stands total at million. It looks like Focus Features, which has put every one of its 13 films into theaters since Kajillionaire last September, is going to have its highest-grossing film of the pandemic – but just its second to pass million and one which is unlikely to hit million. The Green Knight is just A24’s third theatrical release during this time and their numbers have actually gone up. From Oscar nominee Minari (.1 million) to Zola (.1 million) and now to David Lowery’s film (the first in the company s history to start in third place), which has earned million so far.On The Vine: A Background Player and the Queen of SoulThings get a little more crowded in theaters next week. Delayed multiple times since last year, audiences can finally see Ryan Reynolds as a video game character trying to escape in Free Guy (which critics are digging). More folks are trying to rob Stephen Lang’s abusive blind guy in Don’t Breathe 2, and Jennifer Hudson takes on the role of Aretha Franklin in the biopic, Respect. All three films will be exclusive to theaters.Full List of Box Office Results: August 6-8, 2021

12. Octavia Spencer(Photo by © Neon)Octavia Spencer got her first solo starring role this year with Ma, the psycho-horror flick about a middle-aged woman who becomes creepily obsessed with a group of teens after she helps them get booze from the local liquor shop. And while the film wasn’t exactly splattered with critical acclaim, reviews sang Spencer’s praises as the super-scary “Ma” – comparisons were made to Bette Davis’s Baby Jane – and the movie made decent money at the box office, earning million worldwide off a budget of just million. Spencer proved she could draw crowds. The actor s other big 2019 release, indie drama Luce, did hit with critics: the film about a controversial school paper that leads a teacher to question the nature of an all-star student is Certified Fresh at 93%. Spencer, who plays the movie’s meddling/concerned schoolteacher, gives what many are calling a career-best performance that may put her among the Best Supporting Actress nominees come Oscar night next February.11. Billy Eichner(Photo by Jesse Grant/Getty Images for Disney)Want an impossible task? Try being the standout in a cast that includes Beyoncé, Donald Glover, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard, and James Earl Jones. Comedian-turned-actor Billy Eichner managed just that this year, stealing the whole damn show – with an assist from Seth Rogen – as Timon the meerkat in Disney’s live-action-OK-fine-it’s-really-just-animation version of The Lion King. Eichner’s ad-libbed hilarity and unique spin on the character had even those who weren’t too hot on the movie singing his praises (and his version of “Hakuna Matata”). It was a good start to the year for Eichner, too: In February, it was announced he will star in and co-write a Judd Apatow-produced rom-com, in which he will play a gay romantic lead.10. Leonardo DiCaprio(Photo by © Columbia Pictures)There were very few things people unanimously agreed upon about Quentin Tarantino’s nostalgic, laconic, violent love letter to 1969 Los Angeles, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood; portrayals of Sharon Tate, Bruce Lee, and, well, women in general, left a lot of audiences split. One thing everyone seems to agree on, though, is that Leo has lost absolutely none of his ability to light up our screens – even after four years away from them. His portrayal of fading TV star Rick Dalton is a hot Oscar favorite already, with folks particularly falling for his tender scene with young Julia Butters’ Trudi.9. Lupita Nyong o(Photo by © Universal Pictures)Hail our new scream queen! Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o, until 2019 best known for 12 Years A Slave, Queen of Katwe, and Black Panther, reached official horror icon status this year with two swift moves. First, she impressed genre fans at the Sundance Film Festival as a ukulele-strumming schoolteacher in Little Monsters, the Aussie zombie flick in which she gets drenched with blood and sings a soothing rendition of Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off”; the movie should hit theaters later this year. Then Nyong’o put herself in the Oscar conversation with the dual roles of Adelaide and her murderous doppelgänger “Red” in Jordan Peele’s terrifying and critically acclaimed Us. The movie would make a ton of money when it opened in March and leave half the country doing their best croaky “once…upon…a…time…” Nyong’o impressions.8. Shia LaBeouf(Photo by Nigel Bluck / © Roadside Attractions) Don t let your dreams be dreams! Just do it! Whoever said those words, Shia LaBeouf certainly has taken them to heart, making 2019 the year of a critical darling comeback. Once a bag-on-head puzzle – known for public drunken meltdowns and bizarre social experiments – LaBeouf has found the jelly jam to life: A little Peanut Butter and a lot of Honey to turn his prospects around. The Peanut Butter Falcon, an emphatic and rousing Mark Twain-style adventure, is Certified Fresh at 95% and has a huge Audience Score of 98%. Meanwhile, Honey Boy, based on his deeply vulnerable autobiographical screenplay, has maintained its perfect 100% score since its Sundance debut, and is due for release this November.7. AwkwafinaIf 2018 was the year the world got to know Awkwafina, 2019 has been the year it learned it was not going to forget her anytime soon. It started in January when The Farewell debuted at Sundance to rave reviews, with critics praising the actor’s first lead – and mostly serious – role; the movie would open with the best per-theater-average box office weekend of the year in July, and is slowly becoming the surprise indie hit of 2019. (It’s also 99% Certified Fresh. Not bad!) Her golden run, which includes last year s Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean’s 8, shows no signs of slowing down: already this year we’ve seen casting announcements for her upcoming roles in Jumanji 2: Welcome to the Jungle, the live-action Little Mermaid remake, Disney s new animated film Raya and the Last Dragon, and for Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Yep, the “My Vag” rapper is heading to the MCU.6. Ava DuVernay(Photo by Atsushi Nishijima/Netflix)Let’s be honest: every year since she broke through big with 2014’s Selma could be called Ava DuVernay’s year. Since releasing that Oscar-nominated film, she has become the first black woman director to helm a movie that earned over 0 million (A Wrinkle In Time), made the game-changing and acclaimed Netflix documentary 13th, signed up to direct DC’s New Gods, produced acclaimed TV series like Queen Sugar, and, through her production company Array, championed dozens of new voices and filmmakers. And yet 2019 might be her biggest year yet, thanks to When They See Us, her four-part dramatization of the case of the so-called Central Park Five.  DuVernay s acclaimed miniseries follows the arrest, trial, imprisonment, and eventual exoneration of the five young New Yorkers falsely accused of a vicious rape in Central Park, and it has been earning high-praise since landing on Netflix in May; the series is Certified Fresh at 96% and is up for 16 Emmy nominations.5. Neil Gaiman(Photo by Mike Marsland/WireImage)As a best-selling novelist, the author of Coraline and Stardust has long “ruled,” but 2019 sees Gaiman in the second season of the TV adaptation of American Gods on Starz – and that’s just to start. His collaboration with the late, beloved novelist Terry Prachett, Good Omens, was developed by BBC Studios and Amazon Studios and released this year, starring Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon) and David Tennant (Doctor Who). Like American Gods season 1, the limited series is Certified Fresh. Most recently – and to the delight of longtime Gaiman fans – Netflix announced in July that it is developing a show for graphic novel series The Sandman. “We now have the CGI, we now have the technology, and we now have an adult audience, and we have millions upon millions of people who love Sandman and would love to see it,” the author told Rotten Tomatoes in May.4. Jordan PeeleJordan Peele revealed he was more than just a funny guy when he unleashed 2017 s Get Out on unsuspecting audiences and catapulted straight to the top of everyone s Directors to Watch list. The offbeat social-satire-cum-horror-thriller signaled Peele as a fresh new voice in the genre, and he proved he wasn t a one-trick pony when his follow-up, this year s Us, debuted with a monster million opening weekend and a Certified Fresh 93% on the Tomatometer. He wasn t done there, though. At the end of March, CBS All Access premiered its reboot of seminal sci-fi mystery series The Twilight Zone (Certified Fresh at 74%), with Peele not only hosting the show as a modern-day Rod Serling, but also providing guidance as executive producer. As if all that wasn t enough, he still had time to remind everyone how hilarious he is by reuniting with his Key Peele co-star Keegan-Michael Key to steal multiple scenes in Toy Story 4 as Bunny and Ducky.3. The Russo BrothersAvengers: Endgame. Mic drop. What, you wanted more? You mean it s not enough to juggle dozens of punchy, kicky, laser-blasty superheroes coming from different power sets, perspectives, and dimensions into a cohesive, thrilling whole? To not buckle under the weight of 11 years of growing anticipation, across 21 movies – all Fresh, most Certified, and each a No. 1 box office opener – and not only meet those expectations, but exceed them? And for that to flourish into the highest-grossing movie of all-time? Well, if you needed more, just over a month after Endgame, when the blockbuster buzz was still riding high, Joe and Anthony Russo announced their next project: an animated adaptation of Magic: The Gathering, outing them as the most famous fans of the 26-year-old trading card game. Behind the camera and in career development, the Russos never fail to surprise.2. Phoebe Waller-Bridge(Photo by © Amazon Prime Video)In a year in which 11-time Emmy-winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus and her HBO series Veep have returned for awards contention, season 2 of an intimate little streaming comedy, Fleabag, and its creator and star are challenging expectations. The Amazon Prime Video series’ new season sits atop our list of the “Best TV Shows of 2019 (So Far)” with a 100% Certified Fresh Tomatometer score on 78 reviews. Season 1 also has a 100% score, making Fleabag the only series with more than one season and a title-level 100% score backed up by entirely Certified Fresh seasons. Four of Waller-Bridge’s five Emmy nominations are from this year, including for Fleabag, Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for the season 2 premiere episode. She is also creator and executive producer of 2019 Outstanding Drama Series contender Killing Eve, which was also nominated last year in the category. On top of her TV accomplishments, Waller-Bridge was tapped to work on the Bond 25 script – now known as No Time To Die – and turned in a scene-stealing voice performance as L3-37 in last year’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. The star is not just ruling 2019, she’s owning it.1. Keanu Reeves(Photo by Doane Gregory / Netflix)Still, if we have to crown one person as the true ruler of 2019 – so far – the title must undisputedly go to Keanu Reeves. Just how good has 2019 been for Keanu? Let us count the ways. He kicked it off with John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, which would be the best reviewed of the already acclaimed series and almost double the domestic and international haul of Chapter 2. He followed that with an extended cameo in the Ali Wong-Randall Park rom-com Always Be My Maybe on Netflix, and showed he had zero qualms about making fun of his image as the ideal boyfriend (he also delivered a movie entrance for the ages, and one which launched a thousand memes). Next came scene-stealing voice work as the stunt-performer toy Duke Caboom in Toy Story 4, and the announcement that he is going to star in The Matrix 4 . He s also been shooting another sequel to Bill and Ted. (He also dazzled attendees of Xbox s E3 briefing with a surprise appearance that revealed him as the star of 2020 video game title Cyberpunk 2077 — and, yes, he was breathtaking.) Between projects he’s also made headlines for just being a stand-up guy. So yes, it’s been the Year of Keanu (and we will never mention 2018 – era of Replicas and Siberia – ever again).Like this? Ghcxuf Nine Perfect Strangers, Hulu’s star-studded adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s novel, follows a group of people from various backgrounds who visit a wellness center called Tranquillum House for what they believe to be a 10-day restorative retreat. But this is not a vacation they will soon forget. Run by mysterious and ethereal Masha Dmitrichenko (Nicole Kidman) and her minions including Yao (Manny Jacinto) and Delilah (Tiffany Boone), the resort offers the promise of restoration and healing. But at what cost?As the characters and the audience begin to question Masha’s motives, the situation becomes complicated, and it grows harder for guests to leave Tranquillum House before check-out.Rotten Tomatoes spoke to the series cast and rounded up nine things you need to know about Nine Perfect Strangers before it premieres August 18.1. It’s Not a Horror Series(Photo by Hulu)Despite the premise set up with that logline — All is not well  — series director Jonathan Levine said this is a show that “really transcends genre.”“I certainly thought about horror and certainly thought about thrillers,” he said during the show’s Television Critics Association summer press tour panel. “But at the end of the day, even though we’re playing with those tropes, I think, for me, it was about character and about these beautiful people that you kind of empathize with and fall in love with.”Still, he said, “We certainly were playing with the audience s expectations and using genre as a vehicle to tell this story and to keep it compelling.”2. But It Is a Show About Pain(Photo by Vince Valitutti/Hulu)The series discusses pain, but the emotional not what you’d find in a slasher flick. Regina Hall’s (pictured) Carmel Schneider is a divorcee who hopes things like losing weight will help her issues. Melissa McCarthy’s Frances Welty is a novelist experiencing setbacks in her career and personal life.“Doing the show made you think a lot about what you do to cover up your problems,” McCarthy said at TCA, adding that “at some point, you have to get it out. So it’s like you’re already in the midst of being miserable and suffering, so make a change. And that’s so much what I think this show is about.”3. The Guests Aren t All Strangers to Each Other(Photo by Vince Valitutti/Hulu)Michael Shannon (above right) and Asher Keddie (above center) play husband-and-wife Napoleon and Heather Marconi, who are at the wellness center with their daughter Zoe (Grace Van Patten) after experiencing a loss. Melvin Gregg (above left) and Samara Weaving play married couple Ben and Jessica Chandler, who have mastered the façade of perfection. Both families are experiencing emotional strains in their relationships. At one point, during a trust exercise, Heather’s grief consumes her so much that she considers diving off a cliff.“That was really poignant for me, actually, for the character, because it really spoke to the bigger question in the show,” Keddie told Rotten Tomatoes. “And that moment, when she is quite literally on the precipice, I think she has reached a point in her life where she actually just doesn t know how to connect anymore.”Van Patten added that “when you see Zoe, she has really pushed down a lot of her emotion and trauma and has been living in her parents’ trauma more than her own.”When Zoe encounters Masha at Tranquillum, her instinct is to run, but there’s nowhere to go.4. Fleeting Fame Is Also a Theme(Photo by Vince Valitutti/Hulu)In addition to Gregg and Weaving’s social media celebrities and McCarthy’s novelist, Bobby Cannavale’s former athlete Tony Hogburn has reached that stage in his career where people feel like the recognize him — but they don’t know why.In this case, Tony would rather you don’t know who he is.“Part of that is the wardrobe,” Cannavale told Rotten Tomatoes. “I think this guy has physically transformed himself. He s gained all this weight. And he does not want to be recognized.”Cannavale describes the character as “pretty aggressive,” but “it s behavior coming out of desperation.”“Whether he realizes it or not, I think he s trying to wake himself up,” Cannavale said. “I think he s so numbed by these drugs and by how his entire life and those relationships have been clouded over by that, I think any kind of provocation will stimulate him in the right way.”5. The Show Plays with Social Media s Perceptions of Perfection(Photo by Vince Valitutti/Hulu)Weaving’s Jessica is beautiful but also lacks self-esteem and confidence. She is addicted to her phone, which she (like everyone else) must relinquish upon check-in. It pains her that she can’t Instagram a beautiful breakfast spread at the retreat.Weaving told Rotten Tomatoes that she herself has “always had terrible anxiety” that she has managed through medication and therapy.“Anxiety is such a mental state,” she said of playing Jessica. So she tried “to see how that could manifest physically. So I gave her a scratch and some ticks and rapid eye movements and things like that.”She also “did a lot of research and talked to a lot of people who suffer from body dysmorphia.”6. Tranquillum Seeks Out People Who Feel Like They’ve Exhausted All Other Options(Photo by Vince Valitutti/Hulu)Why would Jessica and Ben, who roll up in a fancy sports car, go here when they could just try couples therapy? Or when they could spend their time relaxing at a Hawaiian luxury hotel with Wi-Fi?“I think they ve done all of this stuff,” Gregg told Rotten Tomatoes. “Their life is a vacation and they tried couples therapy, but nothing is working … but she feels like the problem is bigger. So we need you need to take more extreme options.”Jacinto added, “There comes a point in all our lives where you just reach this point of desperation where you need help. You can t find it in your spouse or in your family. So you need someone to tell you that everything s gonna be OK. And, when someone is that vulnerable, there can be abuses of power and abuses of trust.”7. The Show Explores Wealth Inequality(Photo by Vince Valitutti/Hulu)Much like HBO’s The White Lotus, Nine Perfect Strangers examines the excesses and expectations of wealthy people and how some lose sight of the humanity of the staff members catering to their whims.“Diving into it more and maybe thinking about it after the project, you can’t help but sit back and think: How much money do these people have to spend?” Jacinto tells Rotten Tomatoes. “But, I mean, I’m sitting there judging them when, at the end of the day, I am such a sucker for self-improvement and for wanting to be better.”Both series embed lower-income characters into the facilities guest lists, and those characters express a degree of imposter syndrome, in which they openly remark on their worthiness to be guests. And while The White Lotus draws strict lines around its predominantly white guests and ethnically diverse staff, Nine Perfect Strangers offers more of a mix on both sides of the equation.8. Jacinto Is Here For Your The Good Place Comparisons(Photo by Vince Valitutti/Hulu)The actor, who rose to fame playing the delightful simpleton Jason Mendoza on The Good Place is aware that this is yet another series where a bunch of unsuspecting individuals arrive at a utopia lorded over by a charac 😈😈
