Adapted from the children s literature character that first appeared in the 1958 book A Bear Called Paddington, the 2014 film Paddington received a Certified Fresh score of 97% and its 2017 sequel Paddington 2 still holds the record as the film with the most reviews to be Certified Fresh at 100% on the Tomatometer. Paul King, who wrote and directed the first two films, has said that he would not be directing a Paddington 3 if one was to ever happen, and we already know that King s next film will be the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory prequel Wonka for St. Patrick s Day, 2023. Combined, the two Paddington movies earned over 0 million worldwide (0 million and 5 million). No casting announcements for Paddington 3 have been made yet, but the film franchise s ensemble cast (not counting film-specific antagonists) includes Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Jim Broadbent, Julie Walters, and the voices of Ben Whishaw (Paddington) and Imelda Staunton (Paddington s Aunt Lucy).Other Top Headlines1. DANIEL KALUUYA IN TALKS FOR REUNION WITH JORDAN PEELE(Photo by Universal Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)To date, Jordan Peele has only directed two feature films, but both Get Out (Certified Fresh at 98%) and Us (Certified Fresh at 93%) have been box office hits, with each coincidentally earning 5 million worldwide. Expectations are high, then for his untitled third film, which Universal Pictures is helping by calling it a horror event title scheduled for July 22, 2022. Jordan Peele is now getting his cast for that film together this week, with singer and actress Keke Palmer (Akeelah and the Bee, Certified Fresh at 85%) being the first to officially be confirmed. Peele s Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya is also in talks for one of the film s leads, but his deal hasn t yet been finalized. Similarly, Fargo and Game Night star Jesse Plemons was also in talks for a role recently, but his deal fell apart due to a scheduling conflict (possibly because he also signed with Apple TV+ this week to star in Martin Scorsese s Killers of the Flower Moon).2. JOAQUIN PHOENIX TO STAR IN ARI ASTER S NEXT FILM(Photo by Warner Bros.)Jordan Peele isn t the only director who s recently had two critical hits with his first two horror films, as Ari Aster pulled off a similar feat with Hereditary (Certified Fresh at 89%) and Midsommar (Certified Fresh at 83%). For his third film, Aster has recruited four-time Academy Award nominee and recent winner of the Academy Award for Best Actor Joaquin Phoenix to star in a film called Disappointment Blvd. The exact genre for the A24 production is unclear, as the premise is described as an intimate, decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time, which doesn t sound like a horror film, but this report describes the film as a surrealist horror film set in an alterate present. Joaquin Phoenix is expected to film Disappointment Blvd sometime later this year before moving on to star as Napoleon Bonaparte in Ridley Scott s Kitbag.3. NEW SUPERGIRL TO MAKE HER DEBUT IN THE FLASH (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)It s been 37 years since Helen Slater starred in the famously terrible Supergirl (Rotten at 9%), and in that time, Melissa Benoist has gone a long way toward making amends in the popular CW series Supergirl. That said, we re due to get yet another iteration of the character in the upcoming DCEU film The Flash. After director Andy Muschietti (Mama, IT) reportedly saw the auditions of over 425 actresses, the role of Supergirl in The Flash (11/4/2022) has gone to relative unknown Sasha Calle, who currently co-stars in the daytime soap opera The Young and the Restless. The 25-year-old Boston-born Colombian actress will also have the distinction of being the first Latina actress to portray Supergirl in any format (TV, animation, etc). The other 400+ actresses reportedly did not know what role they were auditioning for until very late in the process, at which point Sasha Calle had a chemistry reading with The Flash star Ezra Miller (over Zoom). It s not yet known in which other future DCEU films Calle might reprise her role as Supergirl. In related news, Marwan Kenzari, who co-starred as Jafar in Aladdin, has also joined the DCEU film Black Adam in an unknown role.4. PARAMOUNT TO REMAKE CLASSIC MUSICAL THE KING AND I  (Photo by ©20th Century Fox Film Corp.)In recent weeks, we ve heard about new efforts to remake both Breaklast at Tiffany s and The Wizard of Oz, and this week, we can add another classic from over 50 years ago to the list. There have been multiple adaptations of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The King and I, or the true story that inspired it, but the most famous is the 1956 film starring Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr. That film was produced and distributed by 20th Century Fox, but the remake rights have now landed at Paramount Pictures, which is partnering with Temple Hill, the production company behind recent movies like Love, Simon (Certified Fresh at 91%) and Happiest Season (Certified Fresh at 83%). The 1956 version of The King I received nine Academy Award nominations and won five: Best Actor (Yul Brynner), Best Color Art Direction, Best Color Costume Design, Best Score, and Best Sound Recording. The film was also nominated for Best Picture, but lost that year to Around the World in 80 Days. No writer or director is attached to the remake of The King and I yet, but Paramount is reportedly hoping to bring a contemporary perspective to the project and incorporate diversity and contrasting worldviews by incorporating real history and the musical into it. 5. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY TO BE REBOOTED BY HAPPY DEATH DAY SCREENWRITER (Photo by Paramount Pictures)As of 2021, it has now been six years since the sixth film in the Paranormal Activity horror franchise (Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, Rotten at 14%) was released in 2015. Paramount Pictures has been developing a seventh Paranormal Activity film since 2019, which has included scheduling it first for March 19, 2021, and then most likely delayed by COVID-19 for next year on March 4, 2022. As of this week, we now know that the seventh film will itself be a remake and/or reimagining described as an unexpected retooling of the franchise. Whatever form the seventh Paranormal Activity takes (such as, for example, whether it will still be a found footage film), the retooling will be directed by Will Eubank, whose previous work includes 2014 s The Signal (Fresh at 60%) and last year s Underwater (Rotten at 47%). Eubank will be working from a screenplay by Christopher Landon, who directed Happy Death Day (Fresh at 71%), and wrote and directed both Happy Death Day 2U (Fresh at 71%) and Freaky (Certified Fresh at 83%), all of which put a unique spin on various horror or science fiction tropes.6. REGINA KING TO STAR AS PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE SHIRLEY CHISHOLM (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)In 1972, U.S. Representative Shirley Chisholm became the first African-American to be a candidate for a major party s presidential nomination; she was recently portrayed by Uzo Aduba in the TV mini-series Mrs. America, but she also made movie news in November when Danai Gurira signed on to star in a biopic called The Fighting Shirley Chisholm. As it turns out, that s not the only Shirley Chisholm film in the works, as Regina King, who recently won her fourth Emmy for her work in HBO s Watchmen and her first Oscar for her role in Barry Jenkins  If Beale Street Could Talk, and who also recently directed the historical drama One Night in Miami (Certified Fresh at 98%), which has been in awards conversations this year, is attached to another. King is officially attached to star as Chisholm in a biopic called Shirley (not to be confused with this biopic called Shirley) to be directed by John Ridley, who has experience in the genre as director of the 2013 Jimi Hendrix biopic Jimi: All Is by My Side.7. ARE YOU THERE, GOD? IT S THE ORIGINAL CASSIE FROM ANT-MAN (Photo by Ben Rothstein/©Marvel Studios)Last year marked the 50th anniversary of the first publication of the coming-of-age novel Are You There, God? It s Me, Margaret by children s literature author Judy Blume. Although there are certain details that haven t aged particularly well, the book remains an important landmark in coming-of-age fiction, despite never being adapted as a motion picture, but that s about to change. Abby Ryder Fortson, who was the original actress to play Scott Lang s daughter Cassie in the first two Ant-Man movies, has been cast as the title character Margaret, and Rachel McAdams has been cast as her mother. Are You There, God? It s Me, Margaret will be written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig (The Edge of Seventeen, Certified Fresh at 94%) for Lionsgate and producer James L. Brooks. Lionsgate and Brooks reportedly won the right to adapt Judy Blume s novel after traveling to Florida to meet with Blume in a conference room that had been transformed into an 11-year-old girl s bedroom with pictures of executives as 11-year olds. 8. JAMES WAN S TRAIN TO BUSAN REMAKE FINDS ITS DIRECTOR(Photo by Well Go USA Entertainment)Last year s Academy Award Best Picture win for Parasite (Certified Fresh at 98%) shone a new light on the South Korean film industry, but the country s film output is broad and includes many genres. For example, the 2015 zombie movie Train to Busan (Certified Fresh at 94%) was an international hit, and it received a sequel last year called Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula (Rotten at 53%). The title tells you exactly what the movie s hook is, as it centers on the passengers of a train who find themselves surrounded by a zombie apocalypse. Back in 2018, New Line Cinema announced an English-language remake of the film with James Wan on board as producer, but this week we learned that the film finally has its director in the form of Timo Tjahjanto (The Night Comes for Us, Fresh at 91%), who is now in talks for the job. The English-language screenplay was adapted by Gary Dauberman, who has written several films for Wan s Conjuring Universe and who is also preparing to direct a remake of Stephen King s vampire story, Salem s Lot.9. DAISY RIDLEY TO STAR IN ABDUCTION THRILLER THE MARSH KING S DAUGHTER (Photo by Nicola Dove/©20th Century Fox Film Corporation)The world is still waiting on the sci-fi thriller Chaos Walking (3/5/2021) several years after Daisy Ridley was announced to star alongside Tom Holland, but this week, we learned about another new film for the former Star Wars franchise star. Ridley is now attached to star in the film adaptation of the psychological thriller novel The Marsh King s Daughter by author Karen Dionne. Ridley will play a woman who was kept hostage in a remote wilderness with her mother by her father, an infamous criminal called The Marsh King. The Marsh King s Daughter will be directed by Neil Burger, whose recent films have included the remake The Upside (Rotten at 42%), as well as all three films of the Divergent (Rotten at 41%) franchise. On an Apple device? This week s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news (the stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering new projects for Michael Fassbender, Joaquin Phoenix, and Margot Robbie. This WEEK S TOP STORYM. NIGHT SHYALAMAN WORKING ON MYSTERIOUS MOVIES FOR 2021 AND 2023 (Photo by Jessica Kourkounis / © Universal)On top of everything else in M. Night Shyalaman s Split (Certified Fresh at 77%), the most memorable scene in the movie may have come at the end when it was revealed that it was secretly set in the same world as Shyamalan s Unbreakable (Fresh at 70%), which, of course, subsequently led to this year s Glass (Rotten at 37%). Regardless of how Glass itself was received, the box office success of these movies is a reminder that, like Quentin Tarantino, Shyamalan remains one of the few directors whose name carries marquee value. So, it s little surprise that this week, Universal Pictures moved quickly to schedule two mystery projects from M. Night Shyamalan for release on February 26, 2021 and February 17, 2023. The year 2023 is relatively unclaimed so far, but that date in early 2021 is the week before the reboots of Mortal Kombat and Masters of the Universe, both of which are staked out on March 5, 2021. Although no details are given for Shyamalan s new projects, they are described as being original movies. One possibility has been suggested by Collider, which is that these movies could be a longer story split in two. M. Night Shyamalan has now directed three movies within a superhero framework. What genre might he take on next?Other Top Headlines1. FIRST DETAILS ABOUT JOAQUIN PHOENIX S NEXT FILM AFTER JOKER (Photo by Warner Bros.)Joker (currently Fresh at 75%) doesn t come out for another two weeks, but its future seems pretty bright at this point, following the film s top prize win at the Venice Film Festival and with opening weekend box office predictions in the million range. Joaquin Phoenix will probably emerge from all of this with an even more prospects for major studio prestige films, but this week he signed on to work with an acclaimed independent director first. Joaquin Phoenix s next film after Joker will be an untitled independent drama with a secret premise from writer-director Mike Mills. This will be Mills fourth film following Thumbsucker, Beginners (which gave Christopher Plummer his Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor), and 2017 s 20th Century Women (for which Mills received a Best Original Screenplay Academy Award nomination).2. MICHAEL FASSBENDER JOINS TAIKA WAITITI S NEXT GOAL WINS(Photo by Abbot Genser/TM and ©Copyright Fox Searchlight Pictures)With dozens of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and various Marvel movies from both Fox and Sony, it s nearly inevitable nowadays that actors and directors with Marvel credentials will end up working together on other projects. Taika Waititi, for example, is fitting two non-Marvel movies in between Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love and Thunder (11/5/2021). The first of those two is Jojo Rabbit (currently Fresh at 75%), in which Taika Waititi plays a ridiculous daydream version of Adolf Hitler, and the second will be a soccer underdog true story drama called Next Goal Wins. This week, Michael Fassbender, whose run as Marvel s Magneto finished this year with Dark Phoenix, signed on to star in Next Goal Wins as soccer coach Thomas Rongen, who in 2011 became coach of the American Samoan team in their effort to qualify for the World Cup. Waititi reportedly is now casting actors of Fa afafine heritage to play the American Samoan soccer players. Next Goal Wins is also based upon the 2014 documentary of the same title, which won several awards, including Best Documentary Feature at the British Independent Film Awards in 2014.3. THIS WEEK IN MARGOT ROBBIE: FOOLS DAY AND COMPETITION FOR BARBIE(Photo by Andrew Cooper / © Columbia Pictures)In addition to appearing in Quentin Tarantino s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (Certified Fresh at 85%) and starring in upcoming films Bombshell (12/20/2019) and Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2/7/2020), Margot Robbie is staying super busy in her role as producer. It was just last week that we learned Robbie is producing a Tank Girl reboot, but this week, we found out she will also executive produce (and co-star in a supporting role) a feature-length adaptation of a comedy short film called Fools Day (which you can watch on YouTube right here), about a class of 4th graders who accidentally kill their teacher (Margot Robbie) while playing an April Fools Day prank. Cody Blue Snider, who wrote and directed the original short film, will also co-write and direct Fools Day as her feature film debut. Robbie is also attached to star in the long-in-development Barbie movie (5/8/2020), and this week, that project got some indirect competition in the form of Dream Doll, a biopic about Barbie creator Ruth Handler, which will be co-produced by Rita Wilson.4. BOB ODENKIRK JOINS NEW THRILLER FROM JOHN WICK WRITER (Photo by Michele K. Short/AMC/Sony Pictures Television)While many of his contemporaries became big stars much earlier, the career of Bob Odenkirk has been more of a slow burn since the 1980s, although his status has definitely grown with the success of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul (all four seasons are Certified Fresh at 97% or higher), in which he stars. Above-title billing might be just around the corner for Bob Odenkirk with the news this week that the previously mysterious Untitled Universal Event Film scheduled for August 14, 2020 will be a revenge thriller called Nobody, starring Bob Odenkirk. Screenwriter Derek Kolstad, who wrote John Wick and John Wick: Chapter Two (and co-wrote the third film), is the mastermind behind Nobody, which is described as as a summer thriller in which Odenkirk will play a a suburban dad, overlooked husband, and all-around nobody [with] a long-surpressed rage that explodes after two thieves break into his house, propelling him on a brutal path that will uncover dark secrets he fought to leave behind. (So, basically, Nobody sounds like an adult Home Alone through the lens of John Wick, Falling Down, and Straw Dogs?)5. DIRECTOR LEE DANIELS NEXT HISTORICAL DRAMA: THE UNITED STATES VS BILLIE HOLIDAY (Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)This year marks 47 years since the 1972 biopic Lady Sings the Blues (starring Diana Ross as jazz singer Billie Holiday) was released and eventually received five Academy Award nominations. It s been six years now since director Lee Daniels produced and directed Lee Daniels The Butler (Fresh at 72%), but he s now getting ready for his next film, which will be called The United States vs Billie Holiday. Instead of a full biopic, the drama will focus on a drug sting orchestrated by the Federal Department of Narcotics led by an agent with whom Billie Holiday had a tumultous affair. Singer-songwriter Andra Day has been attached to star in The United States vs Billie Holliday for a while now, and this week, we learned that she will be joined by Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight), Garrett Hedlund (Mudbound), Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll), and Da Vine Joy Randolph (of Netflix s upcoming Dolemite is My Name). The United States vs Billie Holiday is reportedly inspired by the 2015 bestselling book Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs by Johann Hari.6. FUNKO POP! VINYL FIGURES GET AN ANIMATED FILM(Photo by Bloomberg/Getty Images)In 2014, Warner Animation had a surprise success with The LEGO Movie (Certified Fresh at 96%), which earned over 9 million worldwide, even if the subsequent sequels didn t do quite as well. Part of the formula behind the success of The LEGO Movie was that, like the toys it was based upon, the film was able to borrow characters from franchises like DC Comics, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars. Another popular franchise that is built largely upon the popularity of other pop culture items is Funko s Pop! vinyl figures, and like LEGO before them, the Funko Pop! figures are also now getting their own movie from Warner Animation. As with LEGO, Warner Bros. and Funko have a long history of licensing brands like Batman and Harry Potter, and the Funko Pop! movie is expected to draw heavily from those in-house properties. It will be a while before we get a release date for the Funko Pop! movie, but in the meantime, future Warner Animation movies will include Scoob (5/5/2020), Tom Jerry (4/16/2021), and Space Jam 2 (7/16/2021).7. WWE PARTNERING ON MONSTER WRESTLING ANIMATED MOVIE RUMBLE FOR 2020 (Photo by Glen Wilson /© Netflix)Much like the Bob Odenkirk movie above, until this week, Paramount Animation also had an untitled film scheduled for next summer on July 31, 2020. We can now report that the movie will be called Rumble, and that it will be a joint project with WWE Studios (Fighting with My Family). Rumble will be set in a world where monster wrestling is a global sport and monsters are superstar athletes, with a voice cast that includes Will Arnett (Batman from The LEGO Batman Movie), Terry Crews (TV s Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Tony Danza, and WWE wrestling stars like Becky Lynch and Roman Reigns. Other Paramount Animation movies scheduled for 2020 include Sonic the Hedgehog (2/14/2020), The SpongeBob Movie: It s a Wonderful Sponge (5/22/2020), and Clifford the Big Red Dog (11/13/2020). In related news, this week Paramount Animation also unveiled their new Star Skipper opening animation that will appear before these 2020 movies.8. THIS WEEK IN REMAKES: THE CRAFT, HOUSE PARTY, AND SET IT OFF Even if you set aside comic book movies and various big budget franchises like Disney, Fast Furious, James Bond, and Star Wars, the hunt for original movies each year is still made difficult by the abundance of remakes, and there s no end in sight. To illustrate the point, this week s headlines included remakes of The Craft, House Party, and Set It Off. First up, the cast for The Craft was announced, with Gideon Adlon, Lovie Simone, and Zoey Luna joining the previously announced Cailee Spaeny (Bad Times at the El Royale). Then, the House Party remake announced it will now be directed by Calmatic, the director of the video behind the hit country/rap song Old Town Road by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus. That movie has been in the mix for a while now, as it s one of the projects that LeBron James is producing, along with Space Jam 2 (7/16/2021). Finally, the 1996 heist movie Set It Off is also getting remade, which Issa Rae (Insecure) is now developing at New Line Cinema, with Issa Rae likely to take one of the starring roles.9. THE SOCIAL MEDIA WHIRLWIND AROUND THE PRINCESS BRIDE REMAKE (Photo by TM and Copyright © 20th Century Fox Film Corp. All rights reserved)Every once in a while, we get a cautionary tale about the power of social media, frequently at the expense of old school figures who lack the foresight to realize how badly their words can be blown out of proportion. Let s start with this Variety profile of longtime TV producer Norman Lear, who also went on to produce movies like The Princess Bride and Fried Green Tomatoes. In that piece, there are some quotes from Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra, including this one: We have so many people coming to us saying, We want to remake this show or that show very famous people whose names I won t use, but they want to redo The Princess Bride.' And that right there was enough to explode online, as people took to their phones and computers to voice their disapproval of the mere thought of remaking the beloved 1987 fantasy comedy. Those expressing said disapproval included Jamie Lee Curtis and the original film s star Cary Elwes, who simply said, There s a shortage of perfect movies in this world. It would be a pity to damage this one. The bottom line: there are people in Hollywood who think The Princess Bride should be remade, and those people should be ashamed of themselves.Like this? 1. FIRST MOVIE UNITING SCORSESE, DE NIRO, AND DICAPRIO STARTS FILMING SOON Ryan FujitaniLike many directors of his stature, Martin Scorsese enjoys working with some of the same actors repeatedly. Early in his career, the actor Scorsese worked with the most was Robert De Niro (Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, and recently, The Irishman), and in the 2000s and 2010s, that distinction more often went to Leonardo DiCaprio (The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island). For his next film, Martin Scorsese is going to double down, so to speak, by working with both Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. That film, which starts filming in March, will be called Killers of the Flower Moon, based upon a non-fiction book about a series of murders in Oklahoma in the 1920s that was one of the first major cases taken on by the then-new Federal Bureau of Investigation. Leonardo DiCaprio is expected to play one of the FBI agents, and Robert De Niro will play a local cattle rancher suspected of committing the murders of Osage tribe members.2. ALEXANDER PAYNE TO REMAKE BABETTE S FEAST(Photo by (c) Orion courtesy Everett Collection)As good as they often are, most films in a language other than English are going to face a box office handicap in the United States, so there is a very old tradition of some of those movies being remade in English. One that has arguably crossed over well in the last 30 years or so is 1987 s Babette s Feast (Fresh at 97%), a Danish film about a French woman who brings her culinary skills to a remote village unaccustomed to food that tastes good. Although he had a bit of a critical misstep with Downsizing (Rotten at 48%), director Alexander Payne has otherwise delivered a series of Certified Fresh films (including Election, About Schmidt, Sideways, and Nebraska), and he s now developing an English-language reimagining of Babette s Feast, which will be set in a religious community in small-town Minnesota.3. 2020 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL COMPETITION FILMS ANNOUNCED (Photo by Amazon Studios)For pretty much every year since the 1990s, the Sundance Film Festival has become the first place that many people hear about some of the films that later go on to become awards season contenders. (This year, those films include Clemency, Hala, and Honey Boy.) We don t have enough space here to list all of the films in Dramatic Competition next year, but we will note that the roster is one of Sundance s most diverse ever, with over half the films being directed by people of color. Some of the more famous actors in competition in 2020 include Zazie Beetz and Winston Duke (Nine Days), Daniel Dae Kim (BLAST BEAT), Meek Mill (Charm City Kings), Elisabeth Moss (Shirley), Andy Samberg (Palm Springs), Tessa Thompson (Sylvie s Love), and Steven Yuen (Minari).4. There are plenty of feature-length films heading our way, as well. The most highly anticipated, according to Rotten Tomatoes users, is Enola Holmes, the Netflix film starring Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown as Sherlock s spunky younger sister. (Sherlock Holmes, we should mention, is played by another Netflix star, The Witcher’s Henry Cavill.)The top 10 most anticipated TV and streaming movies is a good mix of scripted and documentary — both Belushi, about the late comedian Jim Belushi, and Crazy, Not Insane, about what makes a serial killer , made the list. In addition to the grown-up fare, there are a few films tailor-made for a younger-skewing audience (Disney+ original Secret Society of Second-Born Royals among them). Two high-profile remakes are also on the list — Black Beauty, with Kate Winslet lending her voice to this contemporary adaptation of the novel, and Netflix s highly anticipated, star-studded remake of Daphne du Maurier s thriller Rebecca, featuring Armie Hammer and Lily James in the first feature film take on the book since Alfred Hitchcock s 1940 version.Disagree with the survey results? It was another fight for the top spot at the box office between the Demon Slayer and the Mortal Kombatants – though this weekend s earnings suggest repeat business is not in the cards for theatrical viewings just yet. Even though the options have been limited, the big titles still continue to deal with challenges of reduced capacity and the alternative to view them at home at the time of premiere or after a few weeks. Godzilla vs. Kong, Tenet, and The Croods: A New Age are still the only films to gross more than million since the pandemic began; though, on the bright side, the million club is starting to get more crowded and it looks like last week’s releases may be headed for membership there.King of the Crop: Demon Slayer Finishes on Top of Mortal Kombat, as Both Aim To Crack Million(Photo by © Aniplex / Courtesy Everett Collection)Funimation’s hit anime Demon Slayer, which topped the box office this weekend after coming in second last weekend, had actually been slowly gaining on Mortal Kombat’s total earnings throughout the week. Mortal Kombat led .32 million to .14 million after last Sunday; by Thursday, the race closed to .85 million–.70 million. While Demon may still trail overall, congratulations is in order to it pulling out the victory this weekend by an estimated margin of .4 million–.2 million; however, you may note that is a significant drop-off from last weekend for both genre films, and with no real competition to draw people away. Up until now, the biggest drop-off for a wide release during the pandemic was the 67.1 percent fall of Wonder Woman 1984 from Christmas weekend to New Year s weekend. With a respective .4 million and .2 million each, Demon Slayer and Mortal Kombat fell 70 percent and 73 percent.That brings their estimated totals to million for Mortal Kombat and .2 million for Demon Slayer on their 10th days of release, which is higher than Wonder Woman 1984 (.43 million), Tom Jerry (.84 million), and Raya and the Last Dragon (.04 million). All of those films are now part of the million– to million–gross club at the moment — and each of them also had or have same-day streaming options. That is something Demon Slayer does not offer as of yet. Those three films also grossed between .42 million and .5 million in their second weekends. The drops could stabilize next week, but looking back to normal times, both Super Troopers 2 and the 2010 A Nightmare on Elm Street remake were the only April wide releases to drop over 70 percent in their second weekends. From their 11th days on, Elm Street grossed just an additional .6 million and Troopers Deux made only .4 million more. That was with theaters open in full and no pandemic. But it was also with more competition. So million is not out of the running for Mortal Kombat and Demon Slayer, but the numbers are suggesting they will more likely be joining the second tier. Then again, given the circumstances, they are still amongst the highest-grossing films during this difficult period in history. The 0 Million Watch: Godzilla vs. Kong Inches Towards Headline-Grabbing Milestone
Disney s first-ever theatrically released princess-movie sequel, Frozen II, is set to light up the box office ahead of the holidays when it hits theaters November 22. Ahead of the movie s release, Rotten Tomatoes correspondent Naz Perez sat down with the key returning cast (Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad, Jonathan Groff) as well as some newcomers to Arendelle (Sterling K. Brown, Evan Rachel Wood) to talk about the movie s mega new songs and musical numbers, as well as to fantasy-cast the completely inevitable Frozen live-action remake. Plus, we spoke with the duo behind Frozen s original music, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, about the challenges of getting lightning to strike twice after the phenomenon of Let It Go.
ng first appeared as 007 in 2006’s acclaimed, gritty Bond origin story Casino Royale, and according to Variety, he will be paid million for his efforts, with some reporting that he will also get a cut of the profits. Despite the earlier rumors that Craig was looking to exit the franchise, the 51-year-old appeared to be in good spirits at Thursday’s event.“The movies have been an event. For myself, I remember going to see them as a kid, and they were a moment. A new Bond coming out was incredibly exciting.”Much of the Main Cast is Also ReturningIn addition to Craig, many of Bond’s familiar allies are returning as well. Ralph Fiennes will reprise his role as Bond’s boss, M, having taken the role at the end of Skyfall when Judi Dench’s version of the character died. Rory Kinnear will return as Bond’s ally Tanner, while Ben Whishaw will once again play MI6’s resident inventor, Q.Léa Seydoux will reprise her role as Dr. Madeleine Swann from Spectre, and based on the trailer, her character will have a major part to play. Swann and Bond seemed like they were headed for happily ever after at the end of the previous film, but now Bond thinks she s betrayed him. Making things worse is Blofeld (once more played by Christoph Waltz), who tells Bond that she has a secret that will be the death of [him]. Meanwhile, Jeffrey Wright also makes a return to play Felix Leiter, the CIA agent who aided Bond in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. Naomie Harris is back playing Moneypenny as well, but Harris wouldn’t say if the character would stick with her desk job or return to the field.“I can’t say; that’s way too much information, unfortunately,” she said at the event. “You’ll have to wait and see.”Rami Malek Headlines New Cast As the Likely VillainNew cast members include Captain Marvel’s Lashana Lynch, who we learned in the trailer is another 00 agent named Nomi. This is intriguing because there were already some reports that Lynch s character would take on the iconic code number after Bond s retirement, and that the film would see Bond come out of said retirement to reclaim it. That doesn t appear to be exactly the case, but Nomi does threaten to put a bullet in Bond s knee if he gets in her way.Blade Runner 2049’s Ana De Armas, who recently co-starred with Craig in Knives Out, also joins the cast, as do Dali Benssalah and Swedish-Danish actor David Dencik, who is known for dark crime dramas like Top of the Lake. Billy Magnussen also co-stars in the new film, and it’s perhaps worth noting that he worked with director Fukunaga on the Netflix limited series Maniac.Rounding out the cast is Oscar-winner Rami Malek of Mr. Robot and Bohemian Rhapsody fame. Malek plays on opera mask-wearing villain that promotional materials have identified as Safin.  There are some theories that he’s actually playing an updated version of Dr. No, the titular villain of the first Bond movie. That would make a certain bit of poetic sense, as Craig’s Bond tenure began with an adaptation of the first novel, Casino Royale. Might he face off against the first film s villain to end it?Malek was unable to attend April’s event, but he sent an ominous video message: “I promise you all, I will be making sure Mr. Bond does not have an easy ride of it in this, his 25th outing,” Malek said.A word about #BOND25 from Rami Malek James Bond (@007) April 25, 2019Bond Will Return to JamaicaNot Jamaica, but you get the idea (Photo by Jay Maidment/Sony Pictures)Back in April, executive producer Barbara Broccoli revealed where the film would start.“Bond is not on active service when we start the film, so he is actually enjoying himself,” she said. “We consider Jamaica Bond’s spiritual home, and he starts his journey here.”Bond will come out of retirement when Felix Leiter comes calling, seeking Bond’s help in rescuing a kidnapped scientist which sets them on the trail of a villain with a deadly new technology. Though there was no footage, since primary shooting had yet to begin, the live stream ended with a shot of one of the sets, presumably Bond’s Jamaican villa. No Time to Die will also shoot in London, Norway (where filming has already been done), and Matera, an ancient, cliffside city in Southern Italy.Billie Eilish is Doing the New Theme SongIn mid-January of 2020, the official James Bond Twitter account announced that 18-year-old pop sensation Billie Eilish would be writing and recording the theme song for No Time to Die, making her the youngest artist to earn the distinction. Just a couple of weeks later, Eilish went on to win five Grammy awards, for Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist, also becoming the youngest ever to achieve that feat.Leading up to the 92nd Academy Awards on February 9, it was announced that Eilish would be participating in a special performance, leading many to speculate that she might debut her Bond theme song then. Though it turned out she had merely been tapped to sing a rendition of The Beatles Yesterday during the ceremony s In Memoriam segment, fans only had to wait a few more days before the James Bond Twitter account officially premiered her song, aptly titled No Time to Die, which you can listen to above.New Distributors Are On BoardNo Time to Die will be distributed in North America by MGM and overseas by MGM courtesy of Universal (note: Rotten Tomatoes is part of the Universal family). This marks a big change for the franchise — for a decade, Sony had distributed the Bond films, but its contract expired in 2015. (Note: The article originally said that MGM was distributing in the U.S. in association with Annapurna; it has since been corrected.)It Will Be Released in November of 2020After initially being scheduled for a November 8, 2019 release, and then a February 2020 premiere, and then an early April release, No Time to Die will now debut on November 12 in the UK and a handful of other international markets before opening on November 25 in the US and most of the rest of the world, reportedly due to concerns about global theater closures in the wake of the COVID-19 Coronavirus outbreak. The new release date comes just two weeks after the premiere of Marvel s Eternals and one week after the release of Godzilla vs. Kong, and puts it up against the Disney animated film Raya and the Last Dragon. If the Craig Pattern Holds, It Could Be Certified Fresh Craig s Bond films have followed a pattern on the Tomatometer: One critically lauded film in the 90s, followed by a barely Fresh film in the 60s. He kicked off with Casino Royale, his highest-rated film ever at 94%, and followed up with Quantum of Solace, which scored 65%; Skyfall was Certified Fresh at 92%, and then Spectre became Craig s lowest-scoring Bond film at 63%. It s worth noting, too, that all three of Cary Fukunaga s films as director have been Certified Fresh.Like this? bob全站下载 Almost 30 years after the release of the second Bill Ted movie, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter return as the goofily endearing titular duo in Bill Ted Face the Music. And now they’ve also got grown-up daughters — played by Brigette Lundy-Paine and Samara Weaving — to aid in their excellent adventures and save the universe from a most bogus fate.Does the long-awaited third installment live up to expectations? The first reviews of the movie indicate that most fans will be pleased to see that the new movie does the franchise, and particularly its main characters, justice with the right amount of laughs and heart. Here’s what critics are saying about Bill Ted Face the Music:Is it worth the wait for Bill Ted fans?Bill Ted Face the Music not only found a way to defy the odds to exist, but it also ended up working as an entry totally in line with the spirit of those older time travel tales.  Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentBill Ted Face the Music… not only gets it right, but makes it look easy. It pushes the franchise into new territory while recapturing the goofy magic of the first two films.  Angie Han, MashableThis is not the kind of late sequel that s a cash grab. It s clearly a labor of love.  Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.comBill Ted Face the Music plays out like a madcap mash-up of Excellent Adventure and Bogus Journey while avoiding all the pitfalls of simple fan service.  Sean Mulvihill, FanboyNationA perfect mix of both Excellent Adventure and Bogus Journey…Bill Ted Face the Music is the perfect conclusion.  Rachel Leishman, The Mary SueIn execution, it’s sloppy, never finding a toehold on a decent comedic rhythm or creative lyricism to make a cohesive, wholly satisfying sequel.  Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionHow does it compare to the previous two films?Bill Ted Face the Music surprisingly arises as the most enjoyable entry in the series. Chuck Bowen, Slant MagazineBill Ted Face the Music is almost exactly as good as its two big-screen predecessors. John DeFore, Hollywood ReporterLike its predecessors [it] is winningly modest and harmlessly silly. A.O. Scott, New York TimesI happened to rewatch Bill Ted’s Excellent Adventure just a few days before Bill Ted Face the Music and they feel a lot like the same movie. Mike Ryan, UproxxBill Ted Face the Music is by far the worst of the three movies. Carla Hay, Culture Mix(Photo by ©Orion Pictures)Do you need to have seen the first two, though?Absolutely, but less to understand the plot than to familiarize yourself with the Bill Ted vib. Ty Burr, Boston GlobeThe film’s opening recaps the first two films…[so] you don’t necessarily need to watch the previous films. Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the MoviesAre Reeves and Winter still excellent?[They] don’t miss a step when it comes to falling back into the surfer rhythms and signature head nods. [And] when they reunite onscreen with Sadler, it’s electric. Kristy Puchko, PajibaTheir dynamic hasn’t missed a step… It’s wonderful to see Reeves and Winter reunited and in particular, it’s lovely to see Reeves back in a comedy. Matt Goldberg, ColliderThe two actors haven t missed a beat…it’s wonderful to see [Reeves] return to humor… and it s especially enjoyable to see Mr. Winter back in a leading role. Jimmy O, JoBloReeves in particular never makes a comic misstep; he’s funny less for the lines he speaks than for his thoroughgoing physical incarnation of a character who’s at least 50 percent Golden Retriever. Dana Stevens, Slate(Photo by Patti Perret/©Orion Pictures)How are Brigette Lundy-Paine and Samara Weaving?Weaving and Lundy-Paine perfectly capture mannerisms of Bill and Ted but in their own way. Danielle Solzman, Solzy at the MoviesThe two have an appealing energy between them, nicely mirroring the harmless goofiness that made the original films more successful than they probably deserved to be. John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter[They] did a fantastic job of mimicking the behaviors of their dads, resulting in a believable and heartfelt performance… they were one of my favorite parts about the movie. Shannon McGrew, Nightmarish ConjuringsThea and Billie are essentially personality-free, and, for the most part, exist to service their fathers’ arc. They have no memorable lines and nothing to distinguish one from the other. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionBillie and Thea aren’t particularly developed as characters… with such a perfect quartet of casting of Bills and Teds, something more could have been wrung from this concept. Kristy Puchko, PajibaDoes the script make enough sense? The goal is once again to save the world with a song, for reasons about as important and easy to explain as Star Trek technobabble. Luke Y. Thompson, Superhero HypeBill and Ted may not fully understand it. The screenwriters, Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, might not either. But it doesn’t really matter. A.O. Scott, New York TimesBill Ted Face The Music doesn’t find its rhythm until [its] two storylines converge an hour in, which means that this 88-minute movie is basically over before it really begins. Katie Rife, AV ClubThe movie is overstuffed with too many bad ideas that are sloppily executed. And the end result is an uninspired mess. Carla Hay, Culture MixConsidering the writers had decades to tinker with the screenplay, the story is surprisingly labored. Mara Reinstein, Us Weekly(Photo by ©Orion Pictures)Is it heartwarming? The secret ingredient, as in all these films, is the open-heartedness with which it embraces the journey. Angie Han, MashableThere’s not a mean bone in all of this series, and the sense of sweetness that continues to carry through means more to these films than people may realize. Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentFor a movie in which the world could end at any moment, Bill Ted Face the Music is awfully sweet and cheery. Steve Pond, The WrapBill Ted Face The Music has more heart than the previous two movies… this sequel [reaches] a tender spot that wouldn’t have been expected at the end of Bogus Journey. Sean O Connell, CinemaBlendBut is it funny?Face the Music does know how to be funny. Perhaps not a film full of huge laugh moments, but there’s a charm here I was happy to pick up on. Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentTime spent with Bill and Ted now may not always be gut-bustingly hilarious, but it’s comfy and familiar. Luke Y. Thompson, Superhero HypeThe movie’s so intent on rushing along that the barrage of jokes grow fuzzy and indistinct in the third act. Eric Kohn, IndieWireAnthony Carrigan is just exceptionally funny. Jimmy O, JoBloHow s the music? The high point of the movie is a harpsichord and Stratocaster duet played by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Jimi Hendrix, a nicely conceived and executed demonstration of how genius recognizes genius. A.O. Scott, New York TimesThe universe-saving song has a bouncy hook I’ve been humming throughout the writing of this review. Dana Stevens, SlateThe movie has painted itself into a corner, because they’ve gotta play the song but no song can be so bodacious that it instantly unites the world. Steve Pond, The Wrap(Photo by Patti Perret/©Orion Pictures)Should they make more Bill Ted movies?Face the Music is probably the last Bill Ted movie we’ll get, and it makes the trilogy most triumphant. Matt Goldberg, ColliderI’m not sure if this will kick off a new franchise with the daughters but if so, I’m all in. Shannon McGrew, Nightmarish ConjuringsIs this the best movie for the moment?Bill Ted Face the Music is the movie that 2020 needs. Rachel Leishman, The Mary SueBill Ted Face The Music is the movie we need right now. Norman Wilner, NOW TorontoFace the Music has a good message about the healing power of music and the comforting simplicity of friendship, and comes at a time when the world could use some good vibes. Adam Graham, The Detroit NewsIn its way, this closing chapter of the Bill Ted trilogy is an allegory for the status of Gen Xers in the dystopic landscape of 2020. Dana Stevens, SlateThis is the movie we really can use right now. Jimmy O, JoBloBill Ted Face the Music opens in select theaters on August 28.Thumbnail image by ©Orion Pictures
