And the black, armor-padded one glimpsed in the teaser echoes the look of Spider-Man Noir from the comic book of the same name (and the inspiration for the character featured in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), though it also shares some similarities to the “Dark” suit which first appeared in Spider-Man/Deadpool #8. For incredible plot reasons, that suit came into being because Peter talked to Mephisto, the demon who erased Peter’s memory of his marriage to Mary Jane Watson (a very, very long story). The padding also recalls an early armored suit from the 1990s. Spider-Man has had a lot of suits over the years, which means the feature films have a lot of latitude in what they can do with Spider-Man’s look.Also, it seems as though his Stark Industries suit also had an upgrade. It appears to be black and red, with the red taking on a darker hue than before. It looks great on film and we re going to assume its a replacement for the one he will presumably lose in Endgame. Y know, once he returns from nothingness.5. Happy Is Cool With Aunt May(Photo by Sony Pictures Entertainment)Happy (Jon Favreau) makes two appearances in the trailer. In the latter moment, he seems to be giving Peter some sort of pep talk about saving his friends. But the earlier moment has a lot going on. For one thing, he’s flirting with Aunt May. Granted, just about every straight male in the MCU ends up flirting with her at some point; it is a constant joke in Homecoming. But the silliness of the moment obscures a potentially key detail.Just before the flirting starts, Happy walks into the homeless shelter’s kitchen with a 0,000 novelty check from Synchrony Bank – purveyors of Marvel’s credit card here in the real world – signed by Pepper Potts. On the check, she is listed as “Co-Founder and Chair, Stark Relief Foundation.” While the organization has been part of the MCU since the Battle of New York (as referenced in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Homecoming), Happy’s appearance and Pepper’s large signature both point to a strange absence in Peter’s world. Where is Tony Stark?That question puts the teaser – and any trailer that might appear before Avengers: Endgame’s April 26th release – in a precarious spot. Should Tony sacrifice himself for the sake of the universe in Endgame, Peter will feel that loss and, presumably, reference it at some point in Far From Home. But the happy-go-lucky feel of this first teaser works around that possibility. It also suggests the rumored Endgame time-jump may also not occur. Unless, of course, Far From Home is set before Infinity War. But the teaser also features some glimpses of a world still rebuilding itself after The Snap and whatever happens in Endgame, so maybe Tony s absence is just a ruse for those looking too closely. You too will be assimilated.For all of its reinvention, Westworld’s season 3 is Certified Fresh at 79%, with its first six episodes averaging 82%. The season fell victim to the Game of Thrones curse, however, with its final two episodes earning Rotten scores, and the finale, “Crisis Theory,” garnering the lowest episode score of the entire series.“Though the third season often succumbed to mission drift, the show did at least follow through on the likelihood that the cost of freedom would be oblivion. Evan Rachel Wood drove the past two seasons exquisitely as the Hostess with the most-est. Maybe this is just personal preference, but the idea that you can’t keep a good woman down holds a lot of appeal. She could be patched together from the pieces of her memory that she stashed in other Hosts. Or, given the data redundancies required in corporate life even now, it seems too simplistic to think that the Dolores on the slab under Rehoboam with her memories being systematically deleted represented the very last version of her consciousness. Surely, she was backed up to the Cloud.2. What Bernard Lowe Discovered in the Sublime(Photo by HBO)What does robot bliss look like? In season 2, we saw it as a human ideal: a bucolic dreamscape of rolling green vistas. In the post-credits scene, Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) returned to the human reality covered in dust, and season 4 will tell us if that was a time-jump and those layers of dirt represented years having passed or a nearer future in which the destruction of the first human exterminations has begun. Before Bernard went under, Stubbs (Luke Hemsworth) — no doubt now moldy in the bathtub — asked him what he hoped to find in the Sublime. An answer, Bernard replied, to what comes after the end of the world. But does he mean in the physical world or in the Sublime?3. Maeve and Caleb: Is There a Place for Them? (Photo by HBO)Are Maeve and Caleb now BFFs? Or has she simply committed herself to his well-being? At the end of the finale, Maeve was shining her maternal light on him hard. Are you ready, darling? she purred. He was skeptical: For what? She: This is the new world, and in this world, you can be whoever the f you want. Skyscrapers burned in the background. This story is just beginning. Maeve embraced Dolores plan in the end — or, at least, didn t stand in the way of it — and protected Caleb by turning on Rehoboam-puppet Serac (Vincent Cassel). The question is: To what end? If Maeve drank Dolores Kool-Aid, will she promote Caleb as the leader of the future s human resistance? Does she even know what Hale-bot has in the works? Season 4 no doubt will feature Maeve wrestling with the human cause and her own interests.4. Charlotte Heading Up Skynet(Photo by John P. Johnson/HBO)Crispy Charlotte told Dolores Prime that, no, she s not mad; she s just hell-bent on securing the Hosts place on Earth. Now that she s replaced white-straightjacket human William with Man in Black Host William, she has a ruthless robot general to marshal her robot army. Or not. One thing is for certain: Charlotte (Dolores-lite) will be responsible for the mass casualty events promised by Rehoboam s predictions: at 1–3 years, 6–10 years, and 12–16 years, with a population collapse at 23 years and the end of human civilization in 50–125 years. Do fans want to see what that 50–125 year period will look like? Will Delos Inc. be renamed Skynet ?5. Artificial Intelligence Becoming Aware of Its Own Emotional Intelligence(Photo by HBO)During a finale fight with Maeve, Dolores revealed that she was the first of their kind who worked — that, like Adam and Eve, the others were made from her metaphorical rib bone. Perhaps that is why Dolores is so ahead of the curve, forging a path over the course of the series from puppet, unaware of the strings controlling her, to vigilante, seeking violent retribution for the crimes against her, to martyr, sacrificing herself for the (possible) good of the many. Westworld viewers need to see Charlotte and her thugs struggle toward the last part of that existential crisis as the war for self-determination between humans and robots rages.What do you think Westworld has in store in season 4? This month has always been a better one for animated films than August has ever been with the first two Hotel Transylvanias and the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs films opening between -49 million for the best four animated openings ever. But Abominable’s start falls behind Open Season, Storks, and last year’s Smallfoot. History has shown that an animated opening over million can still get you over million (as both The Boxtrolls and Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole can attest) but that is not great for a million production like Abominable. Even Smallfoot (which cost million) grossed .2 million domestic and another 0 million overseas, and it still came up in the red. Abominable has grossed a total of million so far.The Top 10 and Beyond: Downton Abbey and Rambo: Last Blood Drop Significantly, Judy Aims for an OscarLast week’s historic #1 for Focus Features, Downton Abbey, fell 57% this weekend to second place with .2 million. No worries, though, as it now has the 17th best September total ever after 10 days with .5 million and finds itself ahead of both The Maze Runner and Eagle Eye, which grossed 2.42 1.44 million, respectively. We’ll see if it can maintain that pace through next weekend, but it is looking good that it will become Focus’ all-time highest domestic grosser. It is over 7 million worldwide as well.Also making a run for the 0 million finish line is Hustlers, which moved back up to third place with .4 million. That is higher than the .7 million that The Equalizer grossed in its third weekend, which brought its 17-day total to .8 million. Hustlers is currently at .6 million and The Equalizer finished with 1.5 million. Approaching the 0 million line is It: Chapter Two which held on to fourth place with .4 million. James Gray’s Ad Astra fell 47% to .1 million, putting it squarely between The Lego Ninjago Movie and Resident Evil: Retribution after ten days. That suggests a final gross someone in the vicinity of -55 million. The -100 million budgeted film has grossed million worldwide to date. Then, over to Sylvester Stallone and Rambo: Last Blood, which fell even further at 55%, putting its total at .1 million. That puts the macho man just ahead of female-led hits Easy A and A Simple Favor, though Rambo’s second weekend is more than million behind nearly both of them, meaning their million grosses are out of reach. To come full circle, it is just a couple million ahead of Riddick which, like the fourth Rambo film, finished between -43 million.Roadside Attractions is having a pretty solid weekend themselves. First off they debuted Renee Zellweger in Judy in the first step to securing that Oscar nomination for her. In 461 theaters, the film finished in 7th place with million. Why is that a significant number? Well, only four other films since 2000 have opened between 400-499 theaters and grossed that much. Among those four were Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (.43 million), Closer (.7), Sicko (.5) and No Manches Frida 2 (.8). Only the latter grossed less than million, so this suggests promise for Judy s eventual expansion and becoming one of Roadside’s biggest grossers to date. That would make two of their films entering their all-time top five in 2019, along with The Peanut Butter Falcon, which, in a real upset, has now won the battle between the festival darlings of the summer. Lionsgate’s Hell Fest opened a month for Halloween and paid the price with just a .13 million start. Funimation’s anime My Hero Academia: Two Heroes was just in 508 theaters but still opened in 11th place with .38 million. While all the anticipation is on Greta Gerwig’s adaptation this holiday, there was nevertheless a 2018 version of Little Women, which opened to just 5,063 in 643 theaters. Night School represented 29.58% of the Top Ten gross of .14 million though the films averaged just 51.8% with critics. This year’s Top Ten grossed an estimated .17 Million and averaged 68.2%.

Only one of them is currently available on streaming too. Certainly there is some focus on the big franchise crossing a milestone in pandemic-record time, but the more hopeful story may be the studio’s acquired franchise showing that family films could be on the rise. Or that nobody realized it was also available for free on Peacock.King of the Crop: F9 Pumps Its Brakes but Still Leads the PackIt was definitely a family kind of weekend all around, with BBQs, fireworks, and the Toretto gang holding on to its #1 spot at the box office, though it was a good news/bad news situation. Starting with the obvious good is that F9 cleared 0 million in just eight days. That’s a full week better than Paramount’s A Quiet Place Part II and about 10 weeks faster than it took Godzilla vs. Kong. Exclusive company to be sure, though F9 would certainly like to join the ranks of its predecessors and set new milestones for the box office going forward.Making million this weekend is almost million better than A Quiet Place Part II’s second go-round. The big difference is that Quiet debuted on a holiday weekend with .5 million and fell to .2 million. If F9’s million start last week was even more impressive, then we must also conclude that barely beating Quiet in week two with a Monday holiday is less so. Nearly 6 million through Monday is still nothing to sneeze at during these times but the 10-day total of 7 million is putting F9 further on course with the fourth entry, Fast Furious, than any films since. (Hobbs Shaw excluded.) The reunion of Vin Diesel Paul Walker in that fourth film had grossed 6.4 million by its tenth day, the result of a .2 million second (non-holiday) weekend. F9 does have the summer weekday advantage in its favor (F F opened in April) which could be the difference in getting over the 5 million that #4 grossed. However, anything under 6 million would still be a + million drop for The Fate of the Furious’ final gross. Still, F9 has become the highest-grossing film worldwide during the pandemic with over 1 million.The Top Ten And Beyond: The Boss Baby and The Forever Purge Complete a Universal Sweep of the Top ThreeWhen it was announced that Universal was putting The Boss Baby: Family Business on its Peacock service the same day as its theatrical release, it appeared to be another white flag that the studio had recognized the limited returns currently of the family market. Lo and behold, the film still managed to gross .3 million over the weekend and an estimated million through Monday. That is still a far cry from the .1 million the original film opened to in 2017, but aside from the “PG-13” Cruella (.4 million) this is the best true family opening to date since last year’s Onward, which opened just a week before everything started getting shut down. It should also surpass Peter Rabbit 2’s total by next weekend. That’s the half-full version of the opening. The half-empty one is imagining what could have been achieved without the streaming option that costs nothing more beyond a Peacock subscription, which starts as low as a month. An even darker timeline might wonder just how many families subscribed to the service this week just to get The Boss Baby sequel.The other Universal title taking up residence in the top 3 this week is The Forever Purge (aka Supposedly The Last Purge.) This entry had the lowest start yet with .7 million over the weekend. The .8 million estimated through Monday is a full million less than the .23 million that The First Purge (aka the last Purge film aka the fourth one) did in its first four days after opening on Weds, July 4 in 2018. Nevertheless that film still outgrossed the original 2013 film’s .47 million with .48 million. All of the Purge films grossed between -80 million; this one may be hopeful to top out somewhere around -45 million.Everything is under million from here, but leading the pack of that group once again is A Quiet Place Part II, which is now headed to over 0 million possibly by next weekend. It should at least have the distinction of being the first film during the pandemic to hit that milestone while also surpassing last year’s Sonic The Hedgehog to become the second-highest grossing film (to only Bad Boys For Life) in 2020-21. F9 will make a run to claim that spot but it will not happen by next weekend, and if it continues to drop fast, do not be shocked if John Krasinski’s sequel keeps the race close.Down in tenth place is a nice story with Janicza Bravo’s Zola from A24, grabbing .2 million over the weekend and million since opening last Wednesday. The Sundance favorite from 2020 opened in 1,468 theaters compared to 1,433 for its fellow Sundance ’20 competitor, The Courier, which made .19 million in its first five days of release and ended up grossing .6 million. Certified Fresh at 86%, Zola has the tenth best score among wide releases of 2021 and is estimated at .44 million through MondayOn The Vine: Marvel s First Big Screen Outing of Phase FourThe film that was supposed to open more than a year ago finally arrives in theaters. Marvel’s Black Widow with Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh and David Harbour will hope to move the box office to the next level before August’s own big comic book film gives it a go. The weirdest, most bizarre movie of the year, and one that just screams Fantastic Fest. You probably already have an idea of what this movie is about based on the title, but Butt Boy is so much more than a gross-out comedy. Yes, it is a one-joke movie about a guy who becomes addicted to putting anything and everything up his butt, but it is also a near-homage to David Fincher, with director Tyler Cornack delivering a pulpy crime thriller involving a cat-and-mouse chase between a hardboiled detective and our titular Butt Boy. Critic Germain Lussier wrote for io9: “Butt Boy is a wholly entertaining and engaging film that dashes expectations at every single step. By the end, you may even shed a tear and absolutely won t judge a movie by its title ever again.”No release date has been announced yet. Sweetheart (2019) 95% A bit of an anti-Shape of Water, J.D. Dillard’s sophomore feature is a terrifying and monstrous survival story of a woman stranded on an island. Think Cast Away, but instead of a volleyball our protagonist’s only companion is a man-eating sea monster. The survival aspect of the movie allows breakout performer Kiersey Clemons to give us full gritty determination in a largely mute role, while the sea monster element allows for impressive creature design and terrifying and bloody confrontations. “One woman, one gilled foe, one gorgeous escape ploy that rations tension as to sustain all 90-ish minutes,” wrote /Film’s critic Matt Donato, and critics agree that the film’s fast pace, creature design and terrific performances make for an entertaining and engrossing aquatic thriller.Universal will release Sweetheart digitally on October 22.

NOT BLOODY LIKELY (Photo by Steve Mack, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Almost certainly because of Election Day (or Election Week, as it were), this was actually sort of a slow week for movie news out of Hollywood proper, but England made up for it. One of the projects announced across the pond is Not Bloody Likely, which is described as a romantic comedy (though not necessarily a traditional rom-com ) set during the original 1914 stage production of George Bernard Shaw s Pygmalion. If you re not familiar with that title (or the 1938 movie starring Leslie Howard and Wendy Hiller), you might know the 1964 remake My Fair Lady (starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison), or maybe one of the loose remakes like She s All That. Pierce Brosnan will star in Not Bloody Likely as George Bernard Shaw opposite Helena Bonham Carter, who will play an actress that Shaw is determined to cast in the play, but partly just as a ploy to rekindle their past romance. Helena Bonham Carter will soon be seen reprising her role as Princess Margaret in Season 4 of Netflix s The Crown.7. COLIN FIRTH WILL STAR IN A ZOMBIE COMEDY(Photo by Giles Keyte/©Universal Pictures)We may have already gotten to the point of a zombie movie potentially having anybody as its star with Warm Bodies (Nicholas Hoult), The Dead Don t Die (Adam Driver, Bill Murray), and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (where does one even start), but if those films all form some sort of arthouse zombie subgenre, well, we got news of another entry this week. Academy Award winner Colin Firth has signed to star in the tentatively titled zombie movie New York Will Eat You Alive, which will be an adaptation of the Chinese digital comic Zombie Brother. New York Will Eat You Alive will be directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson (Isn t It Romantic, Fresh at 70%), and one of the producers will be Channing Tatum, though it s not yet known if Tatum will also take a role in the film. The exact nature of Firth s role isn t clear, but it will reportedly be a chance for him to show off his deadpan humor (get it, because it s a zombie movie, and right, moving along).8. ELLEN PAGE TO STAR IN ESPORTS MOVIE 1UP (Photo by James Atoa/Everett Collection)Hollywood is still slowly working on improving its critical relationship with video game movies, but things have started to get better recently with movies like this year s Sonic the Hedgehog (Fresh at 63%). One of the reasons Hollywood is compelled to keep trying is that video games continue to be a major pop culture phenomenon (with many younger fans never knowing a time when they weren t). Recently, eSports has grown in popularity for the unfamiliar, the term refers to organized competitive gaming similar professional sports, including leagues, huge arenas filled with spectators, sponsorship deals, and celebrity players. As big of a deal as eSports has become, it hasn t been the center of a major Hollywood film yet, but that will soon change. Ellen Page and Paris Berelc are now signed to star in 1UP, an underdog comedy set in the world of competitive eSports. 1UP will be directed by Kyle Newman (Fanboys, Rotten at 32%) for BuzzFeed Studios as part of that company s new efforts to expand into film production. Paris Berelc will play a gamer who quits her college eSports team over the sexism of her male teammates, and Ellen Page will play the coach of her new all-women s team (who s dealing with her own recent experience with a GamerGate-style scandal).On an Apple device? King of the Crop: Aquaman On Top For Third Weekend, Eyes Global BillionJoel MearesAquaman is not going anywhere. Not at least until Glass dethrones what should be a four-week run atop the box office on January 18. The last film to do that was Black Panther. While Aquaman won’t quite reach the heights of last year’s box office champion, it is fixing to do something that not Batman, Superman, nor even Wonder Woman could do in DC’s extended universe. For the first time since Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight films, a DC property is going to reach the billion mark worldwide. Aquaman is the sixth-highest grossing film ever in December after 17 days and is looking at a final domestic gross somewhere in between Peter Jackson’s The Two Towers (9 million) and The Return of the King (7 million.) James Wan’s film had a better third weekend (and first week of January) than either of those films, and its international total currently stands at 0 million. Not only will it be the fifth film released in 2018 to cross the billion dollar mark, but it will be the fifth film in Warner Bros. history to do it after the final Harry Potter chapter, the two Dark Knight sequels, and the first Hobbit film.The Rest of the Top 10 and Beyond: Escape Room Manages a Break Out(Photo by @ Sony)Sony went a little Blumhouse on us this weekend with the low-budget and respectable opening of Escape Room. Critics weren t too harsh on the million production – especially for a horror flick released in January – giving it a 53% on the Tomatometer, and it grossed million this weekend. That puts it in between 2010 s Legion and 2004 s The Butterfly Effect for January horror openings. Audience response suggests it could fall in the same final range of those films, between million and million. Sony’s success continues with Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse which will be heading into profit soon with a final estimate that continues to rise; the film now looks to finish with around 2 million. But on the other end of the spectrum for Sony, Holmes Watson is proving to be a real embarrassment. It could become just the second film to open on Christmas Day with more than million and not reach million. Holmes Watson’s had a million production budget and has currently earned .4 million.Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns is still hoping to forge a path to clear 0 million. As of now it should have no problem passing comparable past December opener Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows’ 6 million, but it is going to need some solid daily holds to maintain the pace of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, which opened mid December in 2011 and finished with 9 million. Ralph Breaks the Internet has a clearer path to the milestone, likely finishing somewhere between 0 and 5 million. There is also some good news for Clint Eastwood’s The Mule. Only one December film has ever reached million in its first 24 days and not finished with over 0 million; that was WB’s 2008 film, Yes Man, with Jim Carrey (.6 million). The Mule, which has not yet opened outside the U.S., will need roughly million internationally to get into the black for the studio.In limited release, Destroyer led this week’s per-theater-average with ,335 in six theaters, followed by Cold War (,500 on the same number of screens) for totals of 0,012 and ,000, respectively. Focus’ On the Basis of Sex expanded into 112 theaters and grossed .67 million, a ,920 average per screen. Then there was Stan Ollie with a ,022 average in eight theaters. A few scandals later and STX is now finally releasing the remake of 2012 s The Intouchables, one of the most successful films of all time in France. It will go up against Keanu Reeves in the sci-fi clone film, Replicas, which was filmed back in 2016 and is likely to arrive with a thud. Then Charles Martin Smith, the actor-turned-director who helmed Air Bud and the Dolphin Tale films, brings us A Dog’s Way Home, not to be confused with 2017’s A Dog’s Purpose, nor its 2019 sequel, A Dog’s Journey. Lowball projections on The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (84% on the Tomatometer) were at million with an uptick to a potential million. That estimate was reasonable given the diminishing returns of the series: 2014’s The Lego Movie (95%) opened to million and finished with over 7 million; 2017 spin-off, The Lego Batman Movie (90%), also opening in February, began with million and ended with 5 million; and in the same year, the September release of The Lego Ninjago Movie (56%) grossed a total of just million, but had little connection to the other films. This is why the .4 million start for the sequel is such an eye-raiser.The million production has history on its side for at least cracking the 0 million mark. The only animated film to open with more than million and not reach the milestone was the R-rated Sausage Party. But anything less than 0 million total is going to feel like a real disappointment. The first two Lego movies were bigger successes in North America than internationally with totals that came in at 9 and 1 million, respectively. So if the law of diminishing returns is any indication, The Second Part is not going to reach the 0 million worldwide it is going to need to break even. Hopefully, they will see better returns for their creepy-doll film than their creepy-kid film this weekend. The Prodigy opened to just million, which is weak even for February horror. Last year’s Winchester made .3 million over Super Bowl weekend. Hell Fest (.1 million opening) and The Possession of Hannah Grace (.4 million) each failed to reach million total. But million is still a decent start for the million production from Paramount. The film should see a Valentine’s Day bump on Thursday even with competition from Rebel Wilson s Isn t It Romantic and finish with over million. The final new release of the week, the darkly comic revenge tale Cold Pursuit, an American remake of Norwegian film, In Order of Disappearance, made .8 million, which is less than recent Liam Neeson films, The Commuter (.7 million) and Run All Night ( million). The latest film’s 74% Tomatometer score is Neeson’s best starring vehicle with critics since 2012’s The Grey (79%), however — though the actor did appear in acclaimed films Widows (91%), The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (91%), Silence (83%), and A Monster Calls (86%).M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass, which had led the box office for the past three weeks, dropped to fifth place for a total gross of .4 million so far, which is nearly million behind the pace of The Village, but the film is well into the black for Universal and Blumhouse with over 1 million worldwide. The Upside jumped over Glass on the chart this week after just an 17% drop, and with nearly million, it will be taking a serious run at 0 million. Then on Thursday comes Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel, which was pushed from its December release date and hopes to generate enough interest worldwide to cover its budget, reported to be as high as 0 million. It should perhaps not come as a surprise then that WandaVision director Matt Shakman is moving on to a movie franchise that got its start as an adaptation of a classic 1960s TV show. Matt Shakman has signed with Paramount Pictures and J.J. Abrams Bad Robot to direct their next Star Trek feature film, working from a screenplay by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (co-writer of Captain Marvel, Tomb Raider), whose involvement makes this Star Trek the first of the franchise s films to be written by female screenwriters. The premise of this Star Trek film is still being kept secret, including whether it will feature previous Kelvin Timeline stars like Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, and Zachary Quinto. This project should also not be confused with the Star Trek to which Quentin Tarantino was once attached. In related news, Lindsey Beer is also currently filming her directorial debut, which will be a prequel to the 2019 remake of Stephen King s Pet Sematary (Rotten at 57%).2. BILL MURRAY JOINS WES ANDERSON S NEXT (Photo by ©Fox Searchlight Pictures)Although Bill Murray did not appear in director Wes Anderson s very first movie, Bottle Rocket (Certified Fresh at 85%), beginning with Rushmore, he has been in all of Anderson s films since. Two weeks ago, another of Anderson s frequent collaborators, Tilda Swinton, was the first to be announced for his untitled next film, which is described as some sort of love story possibly set in a desert landscape (which is filming in Spain). Naturally, Bill Murray has now also joined the project, although we don t know anything about his character (or, for that matter, Swinton s). Both Murray and Swinton co-star in Wes Anderson s next film, The French Dispatch (10/22/2021), which just held its world premiere at Cannes earlier this week.3. THIS WEEK IN JOHN WICK: IAN MCSHANE RETURNING FOR #4 (Photo by David Lee/©Summit Entertainment)Some movies quietly get made with relatively little hullabaloo about casting, while other publicity departments turn the casting process into an ongoing campaign. One movie currently filming that has been consistently making the news because of its casting is John Wick Chapter 4 , which has been covered here at least three times recently (for the castings of Rina Sawayama, Donnie Yen, and, just last week, Lance Reddick). This week, John Wick Chapter 4 made the news twice, first for Chilean stunt actor Marko Zaror (From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series), and then for Ian McShane, who will be reprising his franchise role as Winston, the proprietor of the Continental Hotel, a neutral zone where assassins can come to recuperate but must refrain from conducting any business. 4. HENRY CAVILL IS LATEST TO TAKE ON THE ROSIE PROJECT (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Plenty of movie projects take years and years to get made, but generally, these loops tend to affect certain types of films (remakes, sequels, etc.) the most. One genre that seems to be making a comeback, though, is the romantic comedy (partly because Hollywood doesn t make these as much anymore). The Rosie Project is a rom-com that has been bouncing around since 2014, with people like Jennifer Lawrence, Ryan Reynolds, and Jake Gyllenhaal potentially slated to star, and directors like Richard Linklater and the team of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were once attached. Ultimately, it appears the film will be a vehicle for Henry Cavill, whose spy movie Argylle was just our Top Story last week, as The Witcher star signed on to The Rosie Project this week. Cavill will play an an unlucky-in-love university professor who creates an elaborate questionnaire in an effort to find a wife, but the woman he falls in love with doesn t match his criteria. The Rosie Project will now be the directorial debut of its screenwriter, Steve Falk.5. MICHAEL B. JORDAN S REMAKE OF THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR STILL IN DEVELOPMENT (Photo by JA/Everett Collection)For better or worse, some movies get seem to get remade for each new generation (A Star is Born, for example). Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway starred in the original 1968 art heist romantic thriller The Thomas Crown Affair (Fresh at 72%), which was then remade in 1999 (Fresh at 70%) with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo. Back in 2016, we first reported that MGM had started development of a third version with Michael B. Jordan attached to produce and star, but since it s been five years, it would have been reasonable to assume the project was shelved. Instead, remaking The Thomas Crown Affair is reportedly still very much a high priority for MGM, which this week hired screenwriter Wes Tooke (Midway, Rotten at 41%) to adapt the concept for Michael B. Jordan.6. ANNA KENDRICK AND LOKI STAR ANSWER ALICE, DARLING (Photo by Jason Mendez/Everett Collection)Academy Award nominee Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air, Certified Fresh at 90%) and Wunmi Mosaku (Hunter B-15 from Loki) are now in Canada filming a psychological thriller for Lionsgate called Alice, Darling. Kendrick is playing the title character, who is behaving strangely, keeping secrets about her mercurial boyfriend (Charlie Carrick) from her two best friends (Wunmi Mosaku and Kaniehtiio Horn). Alice, Darling will be the directorial debut of Mary Nighy, the daughter of British actor Bill Nighy, Coincidentally, there is also an actress named Alice Darling, but she doesn t appear to be co-starring in Alice, Darling. Too bad.7. AMAZON S WHEEL OF TIME TO GET AGE OF LEGENDS TIE-IN TRILOGY (Photo by Tor Books)When fantasy author Robert Jordan died in 2007 at the age of 58, he left behind his popular Wheel of Time series yet unfinished, and another writer eventually finished it off. Wheel of Time is now being adapted as an Amazon Prime series to premiere later in 2021, but given exactly how big Jordan s series is, it might be unlikely that the Amazon show could ever adapt it all. With that in mind, Radar Pictures has hired screenwriter Zack Stentz (co-writer of Thor, X-Men: First Class) to adapt the screenplay of the first of a planned trilogy set during the Age of Legends as a prequel set thousands of years before Jordan s Wheel of Time series. The Age of Legends trilogy is being planned to compliment the Amazon Prime series.8. TOP GUN: MAVERICK DIRECTOR TO TAKE ON TALKING CAR CHARIOT (Photo by ©Universal Pictures)The Fast Furious franchise has obviously become a box office juggernaut ( billion and counting, worldwide), but other attempts at adapting super fast cars to the big screen have frequently stalled. Specifically, movie versions of the TV show Knight Rider, the video game series Spy Hunter, and the toy line Hot Wheels have all been in and out of development over the last 20 years, but none of them has been made yet. This week s news seems to promise another movie along those lines, as it s an adaptation of the indie comic book series Chariot, about a criminal who discovers a Cold War-era super spy s weaponized car, only to learn that the agent s consciousness now controls the car (hence our comparisons to Spy Hunter and Knight Rider). Warner Bros. won an auction for the rights to Chariot, with Joseph Kosinski (Oblivion, Tron: Legacy) attached to direct. Kosinski s next films will be Top Gun: Maverick (11/19/2021) and the Netflix movie Escape from Spiderhead, starring Chris Hemsworth.9. REVEALED THIS WEEK: CHADWICK BOSEMAN ALMOST STARRED IN L.A. CONFIDENTIAL SEQUEL (Photo by Marvel Studios)In addition to all of the stories that are officially announced each week, there are also things going on behind closed doors that we as the moviegoing public wouldn t normally hear about. The death last year of Chadwick Boseman has made the non-realization of one such project even more bittersweet. In an interview this week, screenwriter Brian Helgeland revealed that he and L.A. Confidential author James Ellroy had pitched Warner Bros. on a sequel that would have been set decades later in the 1970s. In addition to returning stars Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce, the sequel would have introduced a young L.A.P.D. police officer played by Chadwick Boseman (who had previously worked with Helgeland on the Jackie Robinson biopic 42, Certifed Fresh at 81%).On an Apple device?
