This Week s Ketchup brings you another ten headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles for this Friday the 13th as the horror reboots of Dracula and and Scream, as well as Disney s live-action remake of Peter Pan Wendy. This WEEK S TOP STORYBLUMHOUSE EYEING DRACULA AND FRANKENSTEIN REBOOTS AFTER THE INVISIBLE MAN (Photo by Jasin Boland/©Universal Pictures)Much has been written about how the relative disappointment of 2017 s The Mummy led to Universal scrapping its plans for a Dark Universe featuring their classic Universal monsters. Since then, Universal has changed course with those characters and franchises, including Paul Feig s Dark Army project, a possible Monster Mash musical, and the recent reboot of The Invisible Man (Certified Fresh at 91%), starring Elisabeth Moss. The box office opening of million for the latter (from a budget of just million) is seen as a relative success in a period in which other movies like The Call of the Wild and Pixar s Onward had openings that were perceived as more disappointing. The Invisible Man was produced by Blumhouse Productions (Get Out, The Purge, Insidious, Sinister), and it s sounding like Universal wants Blumhouse to revive their other classic Universal monsters. Blumhouse and Univeral are now teaming up on a Dracula reboot (which is bad news for Dracula Untold star Luke Evans) to be directed by Karyn Kusama (Destroyer, The Invitation). (Incidentally, the Hollywood Reporter ran a piece this week about how Dracula can be rebooted for the 2020s.) Producer Jason Blum has also been talking up his interest in rebooting Frankenstein recently, though nothing official has been reported on that film yet. In related news, Aquaman director James Wan is now developing a non-Blumhouse project inspired by Universal s monster legacy (however one wants to interpret that).Other Top Headlines1. THE TEAM BEHIND READY OR NOT ARE READY TO SCREAM (Photo by Fox Searchlight Pictures)From 2003 to 2010, Michael Bay s Platinum Dunes production company began a series of horror movie reboots that would eventually include some of the most iconic franchises, like Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Amityville Horror, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. That eventually led to other horror franchises being rebooted (like Halloween, Child s Play, and this year s Candyman), but one that has quietly still been waiting its turn is Scream, the 1996 movie that arguably first suc In 2018, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige stunned fans by announcing the studio was developing a film based on Marvel Comics’ Eternals. The assortment of late 1970s Jack Kirby characters are somewhat obscure, but Feige said the “Ancient Aliens” sci-fi trope buried in the concept made it a worthy addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe s Phase Four. Now, three or so years later, the movie is nearing release with an eclectic cast, a now Oscar-winning director, and the same sort of question marks that surrounded Guardians of the Galaxy before its 2014 release. So join us as we examine everything we know about Eternals to determine if it will contain the next Groot or, perhaps, something more mysterious.[Updated on 8/19/21]The Premise(Photo by Marvel Comics)As one of Kirby’s final projects before his he parted ways with Marvel Comics for keeps, The Eternals continues themes Kirby worked on throughout the 1970s in books like DC Comics New Gods: the origins of myths and the power of ancient beings. Debuting in 1976’s The Eternals #1, the comic book focused on a race of humans engineered by the alien Celestials to protect the Earth. Of course, things did not go as planned, and life on Earth developed along different lines. Nevertheless, the Eternals remained to protect the planet from the Deviants, Celestial experiments that also did not evolve quite as expected. The Eternals are themselves long-lived and have developed many advanced technologies; primary reasons why they stay in the shadows, let humans solve their own problems, and focus on more interstellar threats. But this philosophy was not embraced by all members of the race, and a civil war broke out that eventually led to the Eternals being able to store cosmic energy in their own bodies and use it in a variety of ways. There is also some business about a faction founding a colony on Saturn’s moon, Titan, but that couldn’t possibly matter to the film’s story, right? In the modern day, most Eternals carry on private conflicts away from the eyes of the public or act as superheroes to obscure their real intent; which makes sense for a group of Marvel characters who rarely enjoy the privilege of their own comic book. As it happens, Kirby’s version of the title ended after just two years. The title would return either as planned miniseries or short runs in the 1980s and 2000s. Neil Gaiman wrote one such miniseries miniseries in 2006.(Photo by Marvel Comics)Despite rarely enjoying the starring role, the Eternals quickly became a favorite of writers and artists who followed in Kirby’s wake. Various members of the original cast worked their way into books like Thor, and their backstory continued to deepen. Gaiman’s miniseries, for example, recast prominent Eternals like Ikaris and Thena (more on them in a moment) as millions of years old instead of the tens of thousands the Kirby original suggested. He also introduced the idea that the Eternals suffered from a collective amnesia about their origins and lived as conventional humans until circumstances forced them to remember their old lives. And though partial amnesia would explain their absence from recent battles, a teaser released in May suggests the Eternals will be in full possession of their powers and memories as the story begins. According to Marvel, the film will focus on the Eternals – who have lived on planet Earth in secret for the last 7,000 years – renewing their conflict with the Deviants sometime after the missing human population returned from the Blip. The May preview even goes so far as to mention the Eternals never interfered in human affairs until this new crisis, which means they actively chose not be part of recent events.A final trailer released in August hinted at their reasoning for standing down as the Chitauri, Thanos, and others threatened the Earth – the Celestials forbade their intervention except in cases of Deviant incursion. The preview also offered a greater understanding of the film’s take on the characters: estranged for centuries, the group must reunite to stave off “The Emergence.” The event is likened to the end of the world and somehow allows the Deviants to resume their assaults on the planet. Also, “The Emergence” is only possible because of the energy used to return all of the beings Thanos snapped away. That suggests some short-sightedness on the part of the Celestials with their non-intervention rule and, perhaps, a reason for the Eternals to go public during the course of the film. Alternatively, though, the Celestials may have wanted the Infinity Saga to occur for some obscure reason.Meet Your Eternals(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)To play these quasi-mythic characters, Marvel assembled a surprising roster of actors. Leading the pack is Gemma Chan as Sersi. Though she reportedly masquerades as a museum curator, she is really an Eternal with the ability to manipulate matter. In early discussions about the film, Feige said Sersi is the starring character, though it is unclear if this is still the case in the finished film.Angelina Jolie also appears as Thena, a warrior who uses her abilities with cosmic energy to fashion weapons. Some reports note she is in exile from the main Eternals group, so she could serve an antagonistic function even as she unites with the others against the Deviants.Richard Madden is Ikaris, a tactical genius and, back in the comics, a frequent guest star in other titles. Although Marvel is offering us a mere 7,000 years of Eternal history, we’d believe he’s millions of years old as Gaiman suggested.(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)Other Eternals include Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, a Bollywood star whose fame-seeking life suggests he may not be aware that he is an Eternal; Lauren Ridloff as super-fast scout Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, an inventor with a tendency to break the Eternals non-intervention edict; Haaz Sleiman as Phastos’s husband; Barry Keoghan as Druig, whose ability to manipulate minds and distance from the others suggests he may also be a possible antagonist; Lia McHugh as Sprite, an illusion-generating Eternal who only looks twelve-years-old and may be the source of any potential memory loss among the group; Don Lee as Gilgamesh, who can project an exoskeleton and whose name conjures up a very direct connection to ancient human myths; and Salma Hayek as Ajak, the leader of the Eternals, who can also speak with the Celestials, suggesting some of Kirby’s most out-there character designs may be featured in the film. At least, we hope some authentic Kirby weirdness will appear.Additionally, Kit Harington plays Dane Whitman, a human man who may or may not become Marvel Comics Black Knight over the course of the film.Behind the Eternals(Photo by Handout/Getty Images)On the filmmaking side of things, Chloé Zhao serves as director. Long before her Oscar-winning film Nomadland became the talk of Hollywood, her acclaimed sophomore film The Rider, her presentation to Marvel Studios, and her visual aesthetics reportedly wowed Feige. Indeed, the executive became the butt of jokes during the Spring of 2020 as he continued to praise Zhao’s use of natural landscapes to create both scope and intimacy without green screens or visual effects. But in the few moments we’ve seen of the film, those qualities definitely appear to be on display. On scripting duties are Kaz and Ryan Firpo, who’ve been with the project since 2018. Although the pair has few credits, Kaz has won awards for Refuge, his documentary on the Syrian Refugee Crisis, and a short film. Zhao also took a pass at the script.Other people on the crew include cinematographer Ben Davis – a five-time Marvel veteran who shot Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Doctor Strange, and Captain Marvel before Eternals – and editors Dylan Tichenor (Zero Dark Thirty) and Craig Wood (both Guardians films and Ant-Man and the Wasp). Providing the film’s score is Game of Thrones  Ramin Djawadi, who seems like a fitting choice – and not just because two actors from that series are in the film. Like Thrones, the Eternals concept contains a sense of closely-knit cultures, family politics, and an inscrutable enemy on the horizon. The Implications Of Eternals(Photo by Marvel Studios)As names like Ikaris, “Gilgamesh,” and “Sersi” imply, the notion that the Eternals have been on Earth all along will have far-reaching effects on the MCU. If the resolution of the film means they have to reveal themselves to the superhero community, then there’s the expectation for them to, at least, be on call in the future. It is also easy to imagine resentment could bubble up from their unwillingness to lend aid during the Battle of New York or the invasion of Wakanda. It is also possible Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) knew about them and specifically chose not to approach them; maybe he and Phastos had an understanding.Meanwhile, deepening the presence of their creators, the Celestials, in MCU lore could point to a threat worthy of a grand Avengers assemblage in Phase Five or Phase Six. The Guardians did face off against Kurt Russell s Ego, who identified himself as a Celestial even though that wasn t necessarily true of his character in the comics, in Vol. 2 and defeated him. But it s anyone s guess how even this group of active heroes and Eternals are supposed to confront an impossibly powerful Celestial like Ziran the Tester without the aid of a partial Celestial like Star-Lord (Chris Pratt).(Photo by ©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Also, looking back on the allusions to Mesopotamian and Greek mythology, establishing a superpower presence in antiquity opens up other settings for future films, namely the past beyond World War II. Imagine an MCU-set Western or something more resembling a fantasy epic in which the Eternals fight Apocalypse during his time as a pharaoh in Egypt – a very similar story already exists in the annuls of Marvel Comics history. Granted, Marvel Studios prefers its films to be contemporary, but these characters’ long lives do offer new possibilities.Of course, this is all mere speculation. Job one of Eternals is to make Sersi and the rest bankable characters, like Groot and Rocket before them. And while we’re unsure any of the them will become the smash commercial icons those characters became, we expect at least one Eternal will be a welcome sight the next time the Avengers plan a pancake breakfast or defense of the planet.Delayed Just A YearLike Black Widow before it, Eternals was planned for release in 2020 November 6, 2020 to be exact but experienced some of the sliding calendar woes both Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings faced as the pandemic significantly altered theatrical exhibition. For the moment, Eternals is set for release on November 5, almost exactly a year after its original date.Eternals is in theaters on November 5, 2021.On an Apple device? 4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: Congratulations on Occupation: Rainfall. It’s kind of an unlikely story, these guys who funded their own big-budget action sci-fi movie. How did you get involved in the movie?Temuera Morrison: Well, thank you very much. I came across these people, [director] Luke Sparke. They came out of wardrobe. That was their specialty, and they have a lot of experience in wardrobe. So these were tenacious, young people from the Gold Coast, Surfer’s Paradise. At the time, I needed to get ready for Aquaman in some way. And I think I d been a little bit quiet at that particular time and I d just been promoting Osiris Child at one of those conventions us actors go to, another great sci-fi movie out of Australia great director, Shane Abbess, but they had limited resources. The Rainfall team managed to make the movie look as big as Star Wars at times – it’s amazing what they can do from the camera to what we see on the screen. For me it was as opportunity to, again, meet young people, meet the new future, people like Luke. They have a vision, they have a tenacity. So it spun off from the first one, I guess, and that led to the second one.Rotten Tomatoes: The first movie, Occupation, started getting notice from American audiences when it landed on Netflix. Did you notice a sense when people started to pick up on it and take notice of that first film? Was there a moment where people started to talk to you about it? Morrison: Yes, I guess, well, not really in a way. I think I ve been a little bit busy now kind of moving on. But yes, it made Netflix. I know the second one was a big challenge for the producers and Luke. They really got through, so I really got to congratulate them. And I think they had a little bit more help in terms of all the technology too, for the second one, because it looks massive.Rotten Tomatoes: What is it that you like about science fiction?Morrison: There s no kind of rules. Once you see the aliens, it can turn into a comedy, a serious drama, or something in between. So yeah, you have those dimensions to explore.I m a pretty laid-back actor, and I m not one of these ones that raises the flag all the time. So I need to shake it up a little bit. It was the action kind of thing that appealed to me, too. I told Luke, Make sure I m doing some action. (Photo by Justin Lubin / ©Disney+/Lucasfilm / Courtesy Everett Collection)Rotten Tomatoes: Speaking of action, I do have to ask about Boba Fett.Morrison: My lips are sealed. I can t say too much about that!Rotten Tomatoes: Well, I will avoid The Book of Boba Fett. But for The Mandalorian, which everyone has seen, what was it like to return to that character and do that hand-to-hand combat and do things that we hadn t really seen in a Star Wars movie before?Morrison: I think that was a blessing for me in a way, in terms of Boba Fett s history. No one s actually seen him do anything besides stand there. And of course, his claim to fame was catching the man, I guess. But other than that, he was a pretty elusive bloke. So this was an opportunity again, to work with Robert Rodriguez, who gave it a little bit of an edge. And I think Robert s ability was to sort of make a good point of making this guy explode. After it, Jon Favreau come up to me and just said, Congratulations, the fans loved it. Rotten Tomatoes: Will we see more of that Boba Fett, the hand-to-hand fighting Boba Fett, in the new series?Morrison: Well, we can t say too much, but we re going to see his past and where he s been since The Empire Strikes Back. Somebody pointed out he s been kind of stuck in this one place, and now s the time to actually go back in time and check out his journey and find out more about him.But yeah, that was the advantage for me, was that we hadn t seen him do much. And along with Robert Rodriguez as director, we were able to sort of introduce him in a dynamic way, bring him back in a dynamic way alongside the Mandalorian. It was just an honor to be asked back.Hey, it could have gone anywhere. It s a new time, and I think they re looking for fresh faces. And of course, again, it was either Dave Filoni or Jon Favreau probably meeting, and then had a few discussions. I was just kind of quietly thrilled when I did do the meeting. I saw a couple of concept photos on the wall and there was a guy that looked very, very similar to me. And I kept saying, Is that me? Yeah, it must be me. Yeah, it is me!”And then of course, after having a good meeting with these guys and they outlined a few things, it was just wonderful. Again, it was nice to work with these people, and it was just a great opportunity. They brought Robert back in to direct a few more. There s some wonderful directors involved. It s hard work now, what we do now, a whole new system, with COVID in place, health and safety regulations.I just hope I meet the expectations, because you can somehow kind of feel those things. You asked me that question earlier about Occupation – could you feel or sense anything, but definitely on The Book of Boba, you can get more of a sense and a feeling for if it s working or not.So I think with being involved with that last series of The Mandalorian and having a reentry, it has created a little bit more expectation. But yeah, I feel good. We ve done some good work.Occupation: Rainfall is in theaters and available On Demand from Friday June 11, 2021. 1.88.6 0月喜迎Join us weekly as Rotten Tomatoes reports on what s opening, expanding, and coming to the specialty box office. From promising releases from new voices to experimental efforts from storied filmmakers – or perhaps the next indie darling to go the distance for end-of-year accolades – we will break it all down for you here each week in Fresh Indie Finds. This week at the specialty box office, we re leaning into documentaries with a look at the late Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison, an intimate dive into the too-short life of actor Anton Yelchin, and a careful examination of China s one-child policy and its lasting impacts. Plus, there s a new heart-warmer starring Shia LaBeouf. In the indie trailer section, we re getting our first looks at upcoming titles from Will Forte in a hilarious-looking sci-fi comedy to a taut thriller with Sir Ben Kingsley.Opening This Weekend
Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering titles such as Duke Nukem, Plastic Man, The Toxic Avenger, and Pixar s Onward. This WEEK S TOP STORYDOCTOR STRANGE SEQUEL CASTS SPELL FOR POTENTIAL 2021 RELEASERyan FujitaniWhen Marvel s Doctor Strange was released in 2016, it didn t feature any hosts of Hoggoth (hoary or otherwise), but that spell and dozens of other franchise elements remain out there for a sequel. This has been a big year for new Marvel Studios projects going into development for 2021 and beyond, including Black Widow, The Eternals, Ms. Marvel, Black Panther 2, and most recently, Shang-Chi. In the first three phases, there was a balance between original films and sequels, but as you can see from those five films, the focus in 2018 has thus far been on new properties, with Black Panther 2 being the only direct sequel. A Doctor Strange sequel was conspicuously absent, but that changed this week as director Scott Derrickson was confirmed to return for a second installment. Benedict Cumberbatch and Benedict Wong are both signed to return, and Rachel McAdams is expected to as well. Filming of Doctor Strange 2 is expected to start in early 2020, possibly aiming for a release in early May (or late April) of 2021. As for what Doctor Strange 2 might introduce to the Marvel Cinematic Universe next, there are lots of possibilities (though it probably involves either Baron Mordo or Nightmare, or both).Fresh Developments1. MARVEL S STAR-LORD AND SPIDER-MAN MOVE ONWARD FOR PIXAR IN 2020 (Photo by Todd Williamson/Getty Images)Pixar introduced the first teasers for next summer s Toy Story 4 a few weeks back, but we were still lacking details about another film scheduled for 2020, including its title. Pixar corrected that this week with the revelation that the suburban fantasy will be called Onward, will be directed by Dan Scanlon (Monsters University), and feature the voices of Chris Pratt, Tom Holland, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Octavia Spencer. Pratt and Holland are both Marvel Studios stars (Star-Lord and Spider-Man, respectively), and Octavia Spencer will co-star in Robert Downey Jr s The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, also in 2020 (1/17/2020). Although Onward is described as a suburban fantasy, it remains unclear what that means exactly. Onward is scheduled for release on March 6, 2020, which puts it a week after Fantasy Island (2/28/2020) and a week before the X-Men spinoff Gambit, starring Channing Tatum (3/13/2020). In related news, the first trailer for Tom Holland s next solo Marvel movie, Spider-Man: Far From Home (7/5/2019) debuted in Brazil this week.2. LEA SEYDOUX TO MAKE RARE RETURN FOR JAMES BOND 25 (Photo by Jonathan Olley/Columbia Pictures)One of the elements that unites almost all Bond girls to date is that the characters almost never return for a second film (although some like Maud Adams have played different characters). French actress Lea Seydoux, who co-starred in Spectre as Madeleine Swann, is going to buck the trend, however, as she will reprise her character in the 25th James Bond film. Bohemian Rhapsody star Rami Malek was reportedly considered for the film s villain, but conflicts with the filming of his TV series Mr. Robot are likely preventing him from being cast. Cary Joji Fukunaga (Beasts of No Nation, Sin Nombre) will be directing Daniel Craig in his fifth film as James Bond when it s released on February 14th, Valentine s Day, in 2020.3. GOT s KING TOMMEN INHERITS PRIME 2019 RELEASE DATE FOR 1917 (Photo by Gregorio T. Binuya/Everett Collection)Dozens of actors were featured in Game of Thrones, and next year, we re going to start to really see a deluge of new projects for them, as the show s final season has finished principal production. Obviously, some of them have already been taking work in between seasons, particularly those who left the show before season 7. One such young actor is Dean-Charles Chapman, who is not (yet) a household name, but is known to fans as King Tommen Baratheon in seasons 4, 5 and 6. Universal Pictures and Steven Spielberg s Amblin Partners have teamed up on a film called 1917, starring Chapman and George MacKay (Captain Fantastic). 1917 is the next film of director Sam Mendes, whose record behind the camera on the Tomatometer is entirely Fresh, including Certified Fresh scores for American Beauty and Skyfall. 1917 s title refers to the fourth year of World War I, the year in which the United States entered the war (4/6/1917). That McKay and Chapman are both English actors, however, suggests a British perspective. 1917 will open in limited released on December 25, 2019 (against Call of the Wild, Little Women, and Super Intelligence), and then expand wide on January 10, 2020.4. LIGHTER, BRIGHTER DC COMICS MOVIES LEADS TO BOUNCY SUPERHERO PLASTIC MAN (Photo by DC Comics)What a difference ten years can make. In 2008, director and producer Zack Snyder (Justice League, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) chided his Marvel competition, saying, we re going to have a Captain America movie if we re not careful. The positive reviews for the brighter perspectives of Wonder Woman (Certified Fresh at 93%), Teen Titans Go! to the Movies (Certified Fresh at 91%), and Aquaman (currently Fresh at 72%) suggest that critics and audiences alike want superhero movies that aren t always so grim (the verdict is still out on whether that would work for a Batman movie, of course). This week, DC Comics revealed plans for the hero who might be the lightest yet (even more so than next year s Shazam!), namely the super stretchy shapeshifter Plastic Man. First introduced in 1941, Plastic Man also had his own Saturday morning cartoon from 1979 to 1981. (Some sources are also comparing Plastic Man to Deadpool.) Although the Wachowskis (The Matrix, Speed Racer) had at one time been developing their own Plastic Man (the screenplay of which read a bit like a take on The Mask), the new Plastic Man will be written by newcomer Amanda Idoko (who also wrote the upcoming Breaking News In Yuba County, starring Laura Dern and Allison Janney).5. GRUESOME VILLAIN MR. ZSASZ JOINS MARGOT ROBBIE S BIRDS OF PREY Last month, we learned that Ewan McGregor had been cast as the villain Black Mask in the lengthily titled Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn). That will be Margot Robbie s second film as Harley Quinn, and her other teammates will include Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane) as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, and Rosie Perez as Detective Renee Montoya. This week, we learned that Black Mask won t be the only villain in BoP ( TFEOOHQ), as Chris Messina (TV s The Mindy Project) has also been cast as the insane killer Victor Zsasz (AKA Mr. Zsasz). Zsasz s most obvious physical elements are the dozens of scars he has all over his body for each of his victims, so Messina can probably look forward to a lengthy sit each morning in the makeup chair. In directly related news, Ali Wong has also been cast in the film as an associate of Renee Montoya. Warner Bros has scheduled Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn) for release on February 7, 2020 (up against another sequel, Peter Rabbit 2).6. NEW BRIGHTBURN TRAILER REIMAGINES SUPERMAN ORIGIN AS HORROR STORY(Photo by Sony Pictures Entertainment)It appears unlikely that we will ever see director James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) directly work on another Marvel Studios film, but that doesn t necessarily mean he s done with the superhero genre. In October, we learned that Gunn had been hired by Marvel s distinguished competition at Warner Bros to write the screenplay for Suicide Squad 2 (with an eye towards possibly directing). This week, the first trailer for Brightburn (which Gunn co-wrote and produced) debuted, and it revealed that the film appears to be a reinterpretation of Superman s classic origin story. Put another way, what if Kal-El was had been evil? Elizabeth Banks will play the alien kid s human stepmom when Brightburn crashes into theaters next year on May 24, 2019, up against Disney s Aladdin remake, Brad Pitt s Ad Astra, and the western biopic (Billy) The Kid.Rotten Ideas3. SHARK SEQUEL 47 METERS DOWN: UNCAGED SET FOR NEXT SUMMER (Photo by Dimension Films)Although the shark movie 47 Meters Down received a Rotten Tomatometer score of 54%, the film also earned a domestic box office take of million from a budget of just .5 million, so it s probably not surprising that it s getting a sequel. Mandy Moore, Claire Holt, and Matthew Modine won t be returning for the second film (for obvious reasons, at least for two of them), which will instead feature a new ensemble cast led by Nia Long and Corinne Foxx (daughter of Jamie). The other films swimming around 47 Meters Down: Uncaged on June 28, 2019 will be Ford v Ferrari (starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon), Limited Partners (with Tiffany Haddish, Rose Byrne, and Salma Hayek), and the untitled musical from director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire). We continue to be baffled why the sequel, once known as 47 Meters Down: The Next Chapter, refuses to embrace the admittedly obvious but far less clunky title 48 Meters Down.2. THE TOXIC AVENGER IS GETTING A BIG BUDGET REBOOT(Photo by Troma Films)Although both 1984 s The Toxic Avenger and 2000 s Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV received Fresh Tomatometer scores of 70%, the second film has an absolutely Rotten 0%, and the third film wasn t even reviewed enough to earn a score. The Toxic Avenger became such a cult fan favorite that he became the company mascot of Troma Entertainment, the super low-budget production company behind such chestnuts as Blood Sucking Freaks, Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD, and Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead. Despite its gonzo origins, The Toxic Avenger is now being developed as a new big budget superhero franchise by Legendary Entertainment, the company behind The Dark Knight, Watchmen, and Godzilla. In addition to the four feature length movies, The Toxic Avenger was also adapted as a stage musical production, a children’s cartoon TV series, and a Marvel comic. 1. ASSASSIN S CREED PRODUCER NOW WORKING ON A SUPER-UNTIMELY DUKE NUKEM (Photo by dukenukem.com)There was once a time during which video games were largely perceived as products for children or teenagers (and more specifically, teenaged boys). It was at the height of that era, in 1991, when the original Duke Nukem franchise debuted; the games are littered with certain depictions of female characters that have not aged well at all. So, one might think that Duke Nukem would absolutely not be a franchise that would ever be adapted as a movie for 2020 or later, but guess what? That s exactly what s happening. The Duke Nukem project is being produced by Jean-Julien Baronnet, who also produced the video game-based 2016 disappointment Assassin s Creed (Rotten at 17%), and all that s without even mentioning the very Rotten legacy of the nearly 50 previous video game adaptations to date.
It was all quite silly, but that is one of the show’s key strengths. It finds a compelling through-line while turning its characters into puppets or action TV stars. The episode’s Charlie’s Angels pastiche, complete with another appearance by Amy Louise Pemberton as Gideon in human form, played up all the biggest, broadest 70s TV tropes to a tee. We definitely hope the series will find a way to play around with its format like this again next year.3. The Death of Ricardo Diaz(Photo by Robert Falconer/The CW)We’ll be honest, we were never all that fond of Arrow season 6 big bad Ricardo Diaz (Kirk Acevedo). He lacked for a good motivation, he was completely devoid of menace, and he had a nasty habit of evading death. In fact, he was the first Arrow nemesis to survive a season without dying or ending up incapacitated. He entered season 7 as a wanted man before getting locked up, briefly joining the ersatz Task Force X, and then finally dying at the hands of Oliver’s half-sister, Emiko (Sea Shimooka). Now, beyond the delayed satisfaction of seeing this bad guy finally getting his comeuppance, the poetic justice of his death makes it one of the more memorable Arrow moments this year. During one of Diaz s monologues in season 6, he revealed his greatest fear: dying in prison. While we’ll never know if Emiko knew this was the death he feared the most — although it’s reasonable to think The Ninth Circle may have had some intel on this issue — she definitely served him with a brutal end to his sad life.Of course, ending his life led Emiko to becoming another bland Arrow villain, but that s a discussion for another day.2. Barry and Nora confront Thawne in 2015(Photo by Sergei Bachlakov/The CW)The Flash’s 100th episode, “What’s Past is Prologue,” offered fans a lot of wonderful remembrances of previous seasons — from Cisco’s (Carlos Valdes) hoodies to Savitar’s (Gustin) emo take on Barry — but it also featured one haunting scene amid the Easter eggs and callbacks. After their escape from a time wraith damages a badly needed piece of tech, Barry realizes he and Nora (Jessica Parker Kennedy) will have to visit Eobard Thawne (Tom Cavanagh) when he was still pretending to be Harrison Wells to get the equipment fixed. He also knows the precise time to visit because he already visited Thawne on this particular day (January 27, 2015) a couple of years ago to get insights from the Reverse Flash on stopping Zoom (Teddy Sears). Yeah, time travel on The Flash can leave you with a headache. The scene itself, though, is a master class of acting from Cavanagh, Gustin, and Kennedy. Within seconds, Cavanagh reminds the viewer of the brilliance and menace he gave Thawne during The Flash’s first season as he uncovers the real reason for Barry’s second visit and the truth about Nora. She’s not the daughter Thawne expected to meet, and as it turns out, their conversation set into motion the plan that first sent Nora on her trip to visit her parents in 2018.Again, time travel on The Flash can be hard to keep straight sometimes.Besides Cavanagh’s ease with playing Barry’s true nemesis, the scene also provides Gustin a chance to let loose as Thawne is the only person Barry absolutely hates. The fear Kennedy displays throughout the scene comes more from Nora’s reaction to Barry than the cool menace of Thawne. All of it adds up to something unsettling and pivotal. Besides a top moment from this year’s Arrowverse, it might be a contender for an all-time best moments list.1. The Monitor Ends Earth-90(Photo by Jack Rowand/The CW)One moment stands above the rest — a true twilight of the superheroes. First seen at the end of The Flash’s 100th episode, this scene takes viewers to the heretofore unseen Earth-90. There, we see that heroes including Stargirl, a Smallville-like Green Arrow, the Ray, and many more have fallen. The last surviving hero is Barry Allen (John Wesley Shipp, reprising his role from the 1990s Flash TV series), who learns his attempts to change Earth-90 into a worthy planet have failed. The apparent judge in these matters is The Monitor (LaMonica Garrett), an impossibly powerful figure who offers the Book of Destiny to various Earths as a test. But just as The Monitor reclaims the book to end Earth-90’s existence, The Flash speeds away to another reality. While meant as a teaser for the 2018 crossover “Elseworlds,” it also manages to be a great tease for the next year s crossover, “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” The red skies and dead heroes evoke imagery straight from the original comic book. More importantly, it brings the story’s epic scale to television. Nothing in the Arrowverse has ever looked quite like that scene. And the Monitor’s subsequent cameos on Arrow, Supergirl, and Legends recall his first appearance in this scene as the apparent bad guy — another callback to the character’s earliest comic book appearances. It remains to be seen if the television version of “Crisis” will be as apocalyptic as this moment. But if it is, this scene will continue to echo throughout the crossover event.Of course, these are just our top 5 choices. Other memorable moments include Lex Luthor’s (Jon Cryer) rendition of Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” in the Supergirl season finale, Iris (Candice Patton) discovering she missed the battle between King Shark and Gorilla Grodd, and Mick Rory (Dominic Purcell) revealing himself as a beloved romance novelist to a convention hall full of fans. Then there s Nora s final goodbye, of course. But as all these moments prove, the Arrowverse never stops creating breathtaking, funny, or emotional scenes. And with its biggest crossover coming next season — five parts in all, as Batwoman gets in on the action — we expect to see even more incredible moments in the fall.

The Directors Guild of America held the 71st Annual DGA Awards on Saturday at the Hollywood and Highland Center s Ray Dolby Ballroom. Alfonso Cuarón took home the top prize for Roma, while Eighth Grade director Bo Burnham caused something of an upset, winning the First-Time Feature award over A Star Is Born director Bradley Cooper. In a season that has been split for the major awards, all eyes were on the DGA to provide some clearer indications for which film might reign supreme on Oscar night. What does Roma s win mean for the Oscars? Well, Academy members and DGA members seem to share the same tastes: nine of the last 10 DGA winners went on to claim the Best Director Oscar and seven went on to win Best Picture.Follow along with all the winners of the season with our Awards Leaderboard. The full list of DGA winners and nominations are listed below.Feature Film

Gates, Nerdist“[Phoebe is] character I want to see busting ghosts in future installments.” Joey Magidson, Awards Radar“By the time the lights go up, one gets the distinct impression that all that really mattered was clearing the slate and setting this franchise up for future exploitation.” William Bibbiani, The WrapGhostbusters: Afterlife is in theaters on November 19, 2021.
Alfred Hitchcock famously made cameos in nearly all of his films. As far as trailers for those films went, though, he often made much more than a cameo – he was the star. “Hitch” led audiences on a tour through the Bates home and motel for the famous trailer for his 1960 chiller Psycho and, in a trailer for The Birds, jovially lectured us on the ways humans have helped our winged friends over the years – making hats of them, putting them in gilded cages… even making meals of them. (It was never going to end well.)For this episode of Rotten Tomatoes’ new video series, ‘Trailers Reloaded,’ we’re reliving the best of Hitchcock’s trailers – for films like Psycho and The Birds, Dial M for Murder and To Catch a Thief. It’s a journey back through time that offers a fascinating perspective on how movie advertising has changed, and one that proves the Master of Suspense was also a masterful builder of audience anticipation. In Trailers Reloaded you can re-experience your own awesome sense of anticipation for some of the biggest movies ever, with collections of trailers ranging from Hitchcock classics right through to the Harry Potter movies and Marvel’s epic teasers for the films of the MCU. In the lead up to Avengers: Endgame, we invited fans to take part in a mammoth survey to find out your favorite movies, characters, and moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe – so far! Hundreds of Rotten Tomatoes fans took part, weighing in on their favorite Avengers, their favorite villains, their most heartbreaking Infinity War deaths, and which post-Endgame movie they re most excited to see. (Because it may be the endgame this week, but the MCU will go on). We dug deep into the data to spot some fun trends, seeing if there were divides along gender lines (ladies love M Baku, who d have thunk it!?) and generations (our Millennial/Non-Millennial split told us a bunch). Check out the results and major findings below, and let us know your own answers in the comments section.Captain America and Iron Man Tie for Favorite Avenger With 53%, While Ladies Love Thor(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)In one of our survey’s most unsurprising results, the two Avengers whose relationship underpins the entire MCU came out on top when we asked Who Is Your Favorite Avenger? Some 53% of fans cast votes for Tony Stark and Steve Rogers; Thor came in a close third with 50% of respondents naming him one of their favorites.Cap was the clear overall favorite when it came to younger fans: 64% of Millennials named him one of their favorites (compared with 55% for Iron Man). Female fans were slightly less into Steve, though, with 44% of female respondents saying he was a favorite, compared with 59% of males. For the ladies, it was all about the God of Thunder: Thor got the highest percentage of female votes, with 55% of female respondents designating the Asgardian one of their most beloved heroes.Spidey was surprisingly divisive, both between the sexes and among generations. While 46% of male fans called Peter Parker one of their favorite Avengers, just 29% of female fans did the same. Not surprisingly, the youngest Avenger has some serious Millennial appeal, getting 44% of Millennials to name him a fave, compared with 36% of Non-Millennials.The top nine favorites in our survey were all characters who have had standalone MCU films (Hulk, whose standalone film did not star Mark Ruffalo, came in last amongst those). The bottom eight have not had their own films, although one is on the way for Black Widow (ranked 10th), and Scarlet Witch, Vision, Bucky Barnes, and Falcon will all appear in limited series on Disney+.Here are the full results from the question, Who Is Your Favorite Avenger? This week, producer John Davis was doing the PR rounds to promote Jungle Cruise, and he gave a surprising Flash Gordon update that might actually raise the reboot s profile considerably: Instead of being an animated feature as originally planned, Taika Waititi s Flash Gordon will be live action. Although there were three Flash Gordon serials from 1936 to 1940, the character has only headlined one live-action feature film in the 80 years since, which was the 1980 Flash Gordon (Certified Fresh at 83%), starring Sam Jones with a soundtrack by Queen. We can probably expect to wait a few years for Waititi s film, however, as he also has Thor: Love and Thunder (5/6/2022), the soccer movie Next Goal Wins, We re Wolves (a mockumentary about werewolves), and his untitled Star Wars movie all currently in the works.Other Top Headlines1. BRENDAN FRASER JOINS MARTIN SCORSESE S KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON(Photo by ©Lionsgate)Brendan Fraser recently wrapped filming of Darren Aronofsky s The Whale, in which he will play a 600 lb. man seeking to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter (played by Sadie Sink from Stranger Things). Now, Fraser is quickly moving from working with one acclaimed director to another, as he has joined the cast of Killers of the Flower Moon, the next film from Martin Scorsese. Fraser will play lawyer W.S. Hamilton in the Apple TV+ and Paramount Pictures feature film, which is based on the true crime story originally depicted in the nonfiction book of the same title by David Grann. Fraser joins a cast that includes Jesse Plemons (in a lead role) and frequent Scorsese collaborators (and Academy Award winners) Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. Brendan Fraser has also joined the cast of Brothers, the next movie from director Max Barbakow (Palm Springs, Certified Fresh at 95%).2. JOHN WICK DIRECTOR CHAD STAHELSKI TAKING ON ASSASSIN NOVEL SHIBUMI (Photo by Isa Foltin/Getty Images)Authors nowadays just don t have cool pen names as often as they used to. Trevanian was the nom de plume of an American writer who specialized in airport novels, the most famous of which was probably The Eiger Sanction, which was adapted as the eponymous 1975 assassin movie (Fresh at 68%) starring Clint Eastwood. Chad Stahelski is the stuntman-turned-director behind the John Wick franchise, which is also about a deadly assassin, so you can probably guess where this is going. Even as he s about to begin filming John Wick 4, Stahelski has started developing an adaptation of the 1979 Trevanian novel Shibumi, about an assassin who is recruited to take on a conspiracy of energy companies that secretly controls much of the western world. It s worth noting that Stahelski is accruing a large development slate, of which Shibumi is just the latest, so it will have to wait its turn alongside such projects as Ghost of Tsushima, Classified, Kill or Be Killed, and the Highlander reboot.3. HUNGER GAMES PREQUEL TO START FILMING SOON (Photo by Murray Close/Lionsgate courtesy Everett Collection)The Young Adult (YA) novel-based movie fad came and went so quickly that it might seem odd to realize that the very first installment of The Hunger Games (Certified Fresh at 84%) came out as recently as nine years ago, and the last movie was only six years ago. That four-film franchise was a huge financial boon to Lionsgate, which grossed nearly billion worldwide from it, but when it ended in 2015, it also left a big, blockbuster-sized hole for them to fill in their production calendar. Luckily for them, author Suzanne Collins published a prequel novel called The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes last year. During a quarterly earnings call this week, Lionsgate chairman Joe Drake confirmed that filming of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is expected to start in the first half of 2022, aiming for a theatrical release in late 2023 or early 2024. The prequel will tell the story of the 18-year-old (future President) Coriolanus Snow as he gets his chance to be a mentor during the Tenth Hunger Games. Presumably, whoever lands the lead role will resemble a very young Donald Sutherland.4. NICHOLAS HOULT TO STAR AS CREEPY DRACULA HENCHMAN RENFIELD (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Bram Stoker s Dracula has the distinction of being the most frequently adapted literary character in film (Sherlock Holmes is the most adapted human literary character). With that many movie versions of Dracula, there have also been dozens of portrayals of his insane, bug-munching human henchman Renfield, but usually as a supporting character. Always looking to continue their Universal Classic Monsters franchise, Universal Pictures is now developing a solo movie for Renfield, with Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, X-Men: First Class) attached to star. Chris McKay (The LEGO Batman Movie, The Tomorrow War) will direct Renfield from a screenplay by Rick and Morty writer Ryan Ridley, based on an original screenplay by Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead, Invincible). Although no specific premise details have been revealed yet, the setting is believed to be in the modern day, not in the Victorian Era England of the original novel.5. SNL S COLIN JOST CO-WRITING A NEW TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES REBOOT (Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have a way more complicated history than the casual observer might expect (and it goes all the way back to their start as a grim and gritty Daredevil spoof indie comic book). Besides the first three live-action films, there was also an animated movie in 2007 and a pair of more recent live-action movies in 2014 and 2016 with the turtles as CGI characters (and that s without getting into all the TMNT movies that didn t happen). Last year, we first heard that Seth Rogen and his frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg were developing a CGI reboot feature film with Nickelodeon, but as it turns out, that is now just one of two reboots being developed concurrently. Saturday Night Live star Colin Jost and his brother Casey Jost will also write a second Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot for Paramount Pictures. The division between the two reboots seems to be that the Jost brothers are working on a version closer to the gritty comic book origins, while Seth Rogen s is more lighthearted like the 1980s animated TV series. The Jost brothers version will also probably come later than Seth Rogen s, which is currently scheduled for August 11, 2023.6. CHRONICLE SEQUEL FINALLY HAPPENING WITH A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CAST (Photo by Alan Markfield/©20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Up above, we touched upon the came-and-went YA novel adaptation fad, and another trend that has largely fallen out of vogue is the found footage genre first popularized by The Blair Witch Project. For a while, found footage was a lucrative format that gave Hollywood a few surprise hits (such as the Paranormal Activity franchise) and the 2012 superhero drama Chronicle (Certified Fresh at 85%). There was talk for years about a Chronicle sequel, but the personal developments for some of the creatives involved seemed to decrease the chances of that happening, to the point where director Josh Trank said in 2020 that he actively worked to prevent it. As it turns out, however, Jungle Cruise producer John Davis does indeed plan on moving forward with a Chronicle sequel, although it may be a very different film than was originally planned. This sequel will be set about 10 years after the original Chronicle (suggesting filming in 2022?) and will revolve around a group of female college students who discover that they are the next generation with super powers. Davis also did not clarify whether the found footage technique would be used for the Chronicle sequel.7. POPULAR SQUISHMALLOWS PILLOWS TO EXPAND INTO FILM, TV, AND GAMES(Photo by The Washington Post/Getty Images)Some trends blow up simply by being the right idea at the right time. Consider, for example, the case of the Squishmallows, an expansive line (1,000+) of character-themed huggable pillows that first launched in 2017 as sort of a cross between pillows, anime influences, and the Beanie Baby craze of the 1990s. Squishmallows may have eventually become popular in any case, but their expansion may have been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with people seeking something adorable to hug while stuck at home for months. Jazwares, the company behind Squishmallows, is seeking to build upon their newfound success by partnering with the powerful Creative Artists Agency (CAA). CAA will work with Jazware to push the Squishmallows franchise into film, TV, video games, publishing, and live touring. So that doesn t mean that there is a Squishmallows movie project in development just yet, but it certainly sounds like it s just a matter of time.On an Apple device?
