And while critics for the most part went gaga for it — Election is Certified Fresh at 92% — compared to other class-of-’99 highlights, it’s almost easy to understand the general public s collective confusion about it: It’s not a technological game-changer like The Matrix (88%), not a Best Picture conversation piece like American Beauty (88%), not an ambitiously sprawling drama like Magnolia, not a dorm-room philosophical manifesto like Fight Club (79%), and, even with its high-school setting, not quite what first pops into mind when we talk about ’90s teen movies (despite being co-produced by MTV).Director Alexander Payne and writing partner Jim Taylor’s follow-up to their abortion satire Citizen Ruth (80%) is not a tidy sell. The comedy, which follows an idealistic teacher (Matthew Broderick) hell bent on making sure one particularly ambitious student (Reese Witherspoon) loses the school’s presidential election, is decidedly dark yet laugh-out-loud funny and paced at a fun, confident clip. So how good is it, with the benefit of two decades’ worth of hindsight? Let us count the ways.Its Script Is Better Than the Book It Was Based on (and That’s Saying Something)Before his novels were adapted into big-deal film and TV projects (Little Children, The Leftovers), a then-unemployed Tom Perrotta, obsessed with the one-two punch of the Anita Hill hearings and the 1992 U.S. Presidential election, cooked up a brisk, very funny page turner in response. Election’s narrative setup, in which each chapter is told from the perspective of a different character, couldn t have been easy to sell on the big screen. Yet Payne and Taylor stick to it, economically and tidily introducing each main player (Broderck’s Mr. M., Witherspoon’s Flick, Chris Klein’s smiley jock Paul Metzler, Jessica Campbell’s nihilistic Tammy Metzler), usually doing something embarrassing. (See: the freeze frame of Witherspoon s unbecoming expression.)Speaking of embarrassing, Payne and Taylor’s script consistently strips away any empathy for these characters that the book had, pointing out that most of the people onscreen are essentially trash. (Just count the number of shots of refuse, or when it’s used as a major plot point). Similarly, the duo cook up new scenes, like Mr. M. being stung in the eye by a bee (humiliating) or the re-shot ending, in which spoiler alert! the now-disgraced teacher doesn’t have a sort of heart-to-heart with Flick as he does in the novel, but instead chucks a soda (trash again) at her limo when he spots her in D.C.The Casting Is Ace, with Breakthroughs, Debuts, and One Indelible Character(Photo by Paramount courtesy Everett Collection)After her turns in Fear and Cruel Intentions, Witherspoon was keen to go full-comedy, initially hoping to play Tammy Metzler, the screw-it-all sister of popular football star Paul Metzler who makes waves as a last-minute candidate in her school s student council election, running against her brother. But she was convinced to take on the role of Tracy Flick instead — and thank god for that. Beyond critical hosannas from the likes of Roger Ebert and a much-deserved Best Actress nom at the Golden Globes, the young actor displays a deft comedic sensibility and range (not to mention a killer, energetic midwestern accent) that raises Tracy Flick to icon status. In the following decade, that performance would influence Tina Fey’s impersonation of Sarah Palin, and Dan Harmon said Flick was the inspiration for Annie Edison on Community.Then there’s Flick’s nemesis, Mr. M., the most popular and beloved teacher at school. At first, Perrotta didn’t think Broderick would work for the role. But, like he proved three years earlier in The Cable Guy, the actor’s sensitive, soft-spoken demeanor is the perfect comedic foil, and as his life starts spiraling out of control (an extramarital affair here, an election sabotage there), his aww-shucks, nice-guy shell makes the whole mess he creates that much funnier.Although his role wasn’t as demanding as Witherspoon s or Broderick s, Chris Klein also shouldn’t get short shrift. Payne discovered the high school senior when he was scouting locals in Omaha, and in his onscreen debut as the sidelined quarterback-cum-student body hopeful Paul Metzler, Klein amps up the dumbness, walking around the halls with a smile plastered on his face like a clueless kid. That summer, Klein would go on to co-star in American Pie, which did 14 times the box-office business of Election and made him something of a teen-movie celeb.It Somehow Tackles Taboos and Maintains Its Comic Levity“Her p y gets so wet.”“F k me, Mr. M.”Both of those lines are in reference to Tracy. (We know. Yikes.) The first one comes from Tracy’s math teacher, Mr. Novotny (Mark Harelik), who drops the description while admitting his affair to Mr. M. The second is from “Tracy,” during a fantasy Mr. M. has while having sex with his wife. (Garbage, remember?) Payne impressively keeps the film lively and buoyant, even when delving into these dark depths, not letting anyone off the hook morally or taking a tonal left turn.The nastiness doesn’t stop there. Later, in a delightful bit of verbal sparring, Mr. M. brings up the affair, to which Tracy spits back, “I don t know what you re referring to, but maybe if certain older, wiser people hadn t acted like such little babies and gotten so mushy, then everything would be OK and I think certain older people, like you and your colleague, shouldn t be leching after their students, especially when some of them can t even get their own wives pregnant.” Broderick’s stunned, I’ve-been-bested-by-a-pupil face that follows is priceless.It Nails the Hell of High School (and A Certain Slice of the Midwest)(Photo by Paramount courtesy Everett Collection)No matter what side of the desk you’re on, high school can be incredibly boring. Payne captures that monotony throughout Election, with shots of students spacing out until the bell rings and giving half-assed answers when pushed by their teachers. As he nears rock bottom, the once-idealistic Mr. M., record-holder for teacher-of-the-year at his school, gets fed up with the routine, too. “‘Mr.McAllister. Mr.McAllister,’” he says, in a voice mocking a whiny student. “‘Can I get an A? Can I get a recommendation? Can I? Can I?’ F k them.”The midwest — or, more accurately, Payne’s hometown of Omaha, where the film takes place — isn’t spared, either. Chain restaurants playing depressing pop, cheap cars with dirt-smudged windshields, hyperbolically polite parents, and frosty, grey-skied mornings paint a picture of a very specific mediocrity. (The director also explores his native state, and similar dark-comedic waters, in Citizen Ruth, About Schmidt, Downsizing and, yes, Nebraska.)It’s Still Politically RelevantWe don’t want to get political here (this is a safe space, people), but can you talk about Election without bringing up, you know, elections? Beyond the aforementioned inspiration for Perrotta’s book, Witherspoon’s turn as Tracy Flick has drawn comparisons to too many real-world politicians to mention over the years. (Hillary Clinton, hands down, is the most referenced, and Payne claims Barack Obama told him Election was his favorite political film.) But it does say something about the film’s longevity (or maybe mankind’s predictability) that critics saw plenty of Election in the most recent U.S. Presidential face-off. From 80s franchises to 90s sitcoms, every property with a significant fan base is getting a new chance to tell more stories, so it was inevitable that we would eventually get a wave of reboots of beloved cartoons from decades past. But just because an old title is being resurrected doesn t mean it s necessarily going to be bad.If you grew up during the era of Saturday morning cartoons and after the era of toy-commercials-turned-TV-shows, then there s a big chance your favorite animated series is either getting a fresh start in the near future or has already been the recipient of a recent makeover. It s a good time to be an animation fan, so we ve prepared a list with the most exciting reboots of classic animated shows you should keep an eye out for and a few you can watch right now.AnimaniacsWhy It s Beloved: The original Animaniacs was unlike anything else in children s animation. It featured a variety show format that consisted of wildly unpredictable segments that could always surprise you, a large cast of memorable and funny characters, and references to everything from classic Hollywood movies to the big players in the industry. Oh, and did we mention the amazing songs? Animaniacs had a lot of them.How the Reboot is Different: Instead of reimagining the show, Hulu s Animaniacs reboot actually picks up right after the original series ended, with the Warner brothers Yakko and Wakko and the Warner sister Dot reawakening after 22 years to provide new stories and make fun of everything you can imagine. In other words, it retains the spirit of the original, but updates everything for a more modern audience. It was an unadulterated satirical look at Gen X, blending poignant social commentary and lowbrow humor in a way that captured an entire generation. The show was so successful that it spawned not only a spin-off, but also a feature film and a previous revival in 2011, and there s no sign of Beavis and Butt-Head stopping.How the Reboot is Different: Creator Mike Judge will be back to spearhead the Beavis and Butt-Head reboot, which will, of course, deal with meta-themes relatable to both new and die-hard fans.Clone HighWhy It s Beloved: People always love to look to the past to understand the present, so what if a cartoon actually depicted what important people from the past might do in the world today? Clone High had a phenomenal cast of historical figures and great voice actors, and it was a huge love letter to the teen drama boom of the time. Every trope of the genre is explored here, but because of its unique cast, the show was always able to put its own twist to things to hilarious effect.How the Reboot is Different: This reboot is being described as an updated version of the show that will explore high school and also coming-of-age tension through historical figures. Also, show creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street) will return to write the pilot.Daria(Photo by ©MTV courtesy Everett Collection)Why It s Beloved: Sarcasm reigned in the 1990s, and no character embodied the sentiment of the decade as well as Daria, a high schooler with incendiary wit, razor-sharp insight, and a great cast of supporting characters surrounding her. Any teen who was going through rough time with student life could see themselves in Daria, a show that touched on feminism, social class, and even race. But those teens grew up, and now so has the show.How the Reboot is Different: This one is actually getting more of a spin-off than a reboot, which is somewhat appropriate, considering Daria itself was originally a spin-off of Beavis and Butt-Head. Comedy Central will be airing a new series called Jodie, following Daria character Jodie Landon now to be voiced by Tracee Ellis Ross as she enters the workplace after graduation from college. Jodie aspires to be for Gen Z what Daria was for Gen X. It s the first in a series of planned Daria spin-offs, and it will be the first adult animated show in decades to center on a Black woman (considering Tiffany Haddish s character on Tuca Bertie was technically a toucan).Darkwing DuckWhy It s Beloved: Before we got a Batman cartoon, we had Darkwing Duck, the best anatine superhero around. He had more gadgets than the Caped Crusader, a suave personality like James Bond, a sidekick who resembled Han Solo, and a theme song you d want as your ringtone.How the Reboot is Different: Avid fans will surely know that Darkwing Duck actually appeared very recently in the DuckTales reboot (see below for that), where the character is reimagined as an actor who decides to take on the role of a caped crusader after being inspired by his favorite movie character: Darkwing Duck. It is unclear at the moment whether the upcoming reboot produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will follow this storyline or continue the original.Digimon AdventureWhy It s Beloved: Millions of kids around the world were first introduced to anime during the late 1990s, mostly thanks to two shows: Pokémon and Digimon: Digital Monsters. The latter in particular was also unique among cartoons for its serialized story that continued week by week, its flawed protagonists, and its surprisingly dark themes. It was a kids show, to be sure, but it also helped introduce those kids to more sophisticated storytelling.How the Reboot is Different: This year saw the return of Digimon with a new reboot that reimagines the original 1999 show as taking place in 2020, with all the new technology we have today. Additionally, the show does a great job of including a whole lot of mythology from latter seasons, resulting in a series that has enough surprises for fans old and new.DuckTalesWhy It s Beloved: The original DuckTales was a phenomenal adventure series that took viewers to fantastical and remote locations in stories that had fans of Indiana Jones hooked for 100 episodes. Plus, it has one of the best and catchiest theme songs around.How the Reboot is Different: For one, the Disney XD reboot has done a much better job of integrating Donald Duck into the narrative, which is a lot more serialized in this version. There is a lot of depth to the story now, and the characters are more fleshed out, finally giving Huey, Dewey, and Louie distinct personalities beyond their different-colored hats.The Ren Stimpy Show(Photo by Everett Collection)Why It s Beloved: The Ren Stimpy Show was one of the original Nickelodeon toons, a show that was as beloved as it was controversial for its raunchy, gross-out humor and sometimes dark themes. The series was purely creator-driven, aimed at kids but with adult humor that any grown up could appreciate, and featured a cast of beloved and ultra weird characters. It has since become a cult classic.How the Reboot is Different: Comedy Central announced that they will air a new reboot of Ren Stimpy, albeit without the involvement of the show s controversial creator John Kricfalusi, who retired from the business after a number of sexual abuse allegations surfaced in 2018. As of now, we don t know who is returning or what the reboot will be about, but fans of the characters may be pleased to see them back again.RugratsWhy It s Beloved: The original Rugrats was a clever show with a simple concept: What if we do everything regular sitcoms do, except through the eyes of babies? The characters were likable and hilarious, creating a Peanuts for a whole new generation. The show was even able to play with mature themes like divorce and even the death of a parent, despite also being mostly about baby talk. It was also a trailblazer at times, being one of the very first animated series with an episode focused on a Jewish holiday.How the Reboot is Different: It was originally announced in 2018 that a new film will be made as a live-action/CGI hybrid, but those plans got pulled. Then, we learned just this October that a proper Rugrats series reboot would be coming in 2021 with, yes, 3D animated characters, and it will see the return of most of the cast and the original creators. With a world constantly changing, Rugrats is a show that s always been able to boil down what s going on around us through the eyes of the youngest of us.Tiny Toon Adventures(Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Why It s Beloved: Before we were introduced to Yakko, Wakko, and Dot in Animaniacs, Buster Bunny, Babs Bunny, and Plucky Duck showed 90s kids that the Looney Tunes could still be hilarious and fresh after so many decades. The main characters were the young relatives of the famous Looney Tunes characters we know and love, and they grew to become just as beloved.How the Reboot is Different: Like Animaniacs, the upcoming reboot is more of a direct continuation, dubbed Tiny Toons Looniversity. The characters will now attend an esteemed institution of higher hijinks learning to become professional toons. RocknRolla, for example, helped sweep away the sour tastes of Swept Away and Revolver.And now The Gentlemen and Wrath of Man have arrived as counterpoint to the blockbuster bombast of Aladdin and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. And while that may leave some hoping for certain cameos disappointed, the lingering questions will continue to fuel our speculation about the overall Phase 4 story for sometime. WandaVision may have seen its series finale, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues. Let s take a look at the program s contributions to the MCU s ongoing tale.Spoiler Alert: This article reveals details from WandaVision episode 9 “The Series Finale.” Stop here if you have not watched the episode.The Scarlet Witch Was Foretold in The Darkhold — or Was The Darkhold Waiting for a Victim?(Photo by Suzanne Tenner/Marvel Studios)Suggesting the book in Agatha s (Kathryn Hahn) basement was The Darkhold may be our only correct guess during the series, but we ll take it. The book is an immensely powerful tome, as we previously discussed, and a key object for any of Marvel s magic users to obtain. But Agatha added an interesting wrinkle by telling Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) the Scarlet Witch has a whole page devoted to her. It declares she will end the world.The series seems to agree with The Darkhold as Wanda s powers grew exponentially this week and looked quite destructive. Then there s Wanda s style as the Scarlet Witch. While we re sure fans are happy to finally see her with a costume inspired by the late, great Jack Kirby — seriously, we love Kirby s penchant for thrilling headgear — it looks far more like a villain s get-up than that of an Avenger.But, perhaps, that is the point. If Wanda s abilities are as dangerous as The Darkhold suggests, then Wanda still has quite a struggle ahead of her to combat the more impulsive and destructive aspects of her soul. Look at the way she initially strangled the Westview residents when they confronted her. That was instinct. And though Wanda released them and removed the Hex, the final shot of her reading The Darkhold sure feels like a clear indication that she will be Doctor Strange s (Benedict Cumberbatch) opponent in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Or, at least, he ll have to battle the Scarlet Witch even as Wanda fights against her from inside.Maybe we ll even get a recreation of The Patty Duke Show during the film.Now that The Darkhold is an artifact in the MCU, it still leaves us wondering about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and its role in that series. Considering that series firmly established the book corrupts all who read it, will it be the true source of the Scarlet Witch s desire to end all things?Was It Ralph All Along?(Photo by Marvel Studios - episode 105)Though WandaVision s plot, and Wanda s powerset, always seemed like a great opportunity to introduce the Mutants into the MCU — Wanda s ties to the X-Men are almost as strong as her association with the Avengers — the hoped for moment was dispelled once Monica (Teyonah Parris) looked at a Water and Power statement addressed to one Ralph Boehner (Evan Peters) and one of his headshots. The fake Pietro was an actor all along! He was also Agnes s never-seen husband Ralph. Honestly, it s a nice tying of the bow as any other explanation for the guy (short of another reality s Pietro Maximoff) would require a lot of screentime.But, of course, it means no X-Men related revelations occurred in the series as a whole. And in the last month, speculation about certain cameos ran rampant. We participated, of course, and until we saw Wanda s father, Olek (Daniyar), last week we started to wonder if, perhaps, Ian McKellan would appear as Magneto at the last second just for Wanda to ask Papa? as the screen turned to black.Such a scene is still possible in some other project, of course.Unfortunately, much of the cameo game turned out to be a joke on the part of Paul Bettany, who admitted earlier this week that he was referring to himself as The Vision (more on that in moment) and not some truly earth-shattering special appearance.(Photo by Marvel Studios)Which leads to a question: Is WandaVision lesser for not having that shocking cameo? We ve striven to let the show s text guide us in our ponderings — even when it led us away from the Agatha Harkness fan theory. And while we always suggested Wanda s powers could give us the X-Men — and used the Kick-Ass joke as evidence — we re not exactly sad they didn t appear. The one thing we ve definitely held onto was Wanda s grief as the reason for the Westview Anomaly. And though the show ended on a more melancholy note than we expected, we re satisfied with the resolution to the mystery presented in the first three episodes.Those expecting Mephisto may not be so satisfied. But hope for the Devil springs eternal and Billy (Julian Hilliard) and Tommy (Jett Klyne) shouts in the last moments of the end-credit stinger should fuel the further possibility of his eventual arrival. With The Darkhold, the Dark Dimension, and a Mutliverse of madness in play, he is — like Thanos — inevitable. But he may, ultimately, have nothing to do with the twins continued existence.Vision vs. The Vision: Which Is Which?(Photo by Marvel Studios)As in the comics, the use of the definite article in regard to Vision (Bettany) is inconsistent. To be sure, he is often addressed as The Vision on comic book covers and in stories, but characters just as often drop the as he becomes more than a title — an interchangeability he shares with the Batman, oddly enough. But in the program s final cast list, it credits Bettany as both both Vision and The Vision, using that grammatical option as a way to differentiate the Vis we grew to love over the course of the series and the reanimated corpse of the original synthezoid.And we re here for it because it also speaks to the underlying conflict in their battle: the authenticity of Visions.Indeed, after their thrilling fight, they have an equally thrilling conversation about who is The Vision really is — leading to, we suspect, the proper resurrection of the true Vision. The Vision s mention of having been J.A.R.V.I.S., the AI in Tony Stark s early Iron Man suits, seems to indicate his memories, self-awareness, and autonomy are again intact. But the fact their argument ends with them both truly being Vision and not The Vision (or is that vice versa?) also indicates The Vision will need to continue soul-searching before he can obtain his true colors.Or, perhaps, that piece of the Mind Stone residing in Wanda will someday lead to The Vision becoming whole. In the meantime, we definitely love the elegant wordplay in differentiating Vision from The Vision. It s definitely better than our pitch from last week: New Vision and Vision s Corpse.All that said, we love for both versions of the character to merge some day. Well, presuming Vis didn t download his memories into The Vision already.Will Monica Rambeau Become Director of S.W.O.R.D. or Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.?(Photo by Suzanne Tenner/Marvel Studios - episode 105)While it may have been the briefest resolution in the series, we were glad to see Dr. Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) trap S.W.O.R.D. director Hayward (Josh Stamberg) so he could be taken into FBI custody. Although, we admit it would ve been nice to see him get a more just dessert — a la Agatha becoming Agnes again.Nevertheless, it puts Monica in a prime position to become director of S.W.O.R.D. But considering all that she s learned about the organization in the last week, would she want the job? The fact she s still wearing a S.W.O.R.D. shirt is a visual clue that it is indeed possible and, clearly, she could do good work there. But there is another tempting offer on the table.(Photo by Marvel Studios - Captain Marvel)In what has to be our first glimpse of Secret Invasion, a Skrull operative spirits Monica away from the scene of Hayward s crime to tell her an old friend of her mother wants to talk. In space. Now, there are two people who could be Maria Rambeau s old friend: Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) and Nicholas J. Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). In terms of Marvel Studios production chronology, we ll next see Monica in the Captain Marvel sequel, but we re going to assume Fury has invited Monica to the orbital staging platform glimpsed at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home. Which, of course, only leads to more questions about Fury.For one thing: How long has that platform been there? Considering he was erased during the Blip, he could not have put this thing together in just a few weeks. That suggests it s been there for a while and, perhaps, what he was working on before he turned to dust in 2019. But the Skrull operative leads to a new possibility — is the outpost even his? Perhaps the Skrulls put it there as part of their decades-long secret invasion.Or, possibly, the platform is a next generation S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier capable of trans-atmospheric travel. Although Fury seemingly washed his hands of the agency at the end of Captain America: The Winter Solider — or left it in Agent Coulson s (Clark Gregg) capable hands if you accept Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as canon — we doubt he d truly let it wither away no matter how disgraced Hydra left it or how many of its secrets Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) exposed.If that is the case, it leaves Monica with an intriguing choice: lead S.W.O.R.D or join S.H.I.E.L.D. Granted, we re presuming a lot about both organizations — like Fury having no stake in S.W.O.R.D. — and Monica s interest in them. One thing is clear though from what we know of her so far: an invitation into space is something she cannot refuse. And while her powers are still mysterious — is she a being of pure light now? — we have no doubt the next time we see her, it will be out among the stars.What s Next? Will Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Provide Answers?(Photo by Marvel Studios)The 20th century television sitcoms Wanda loved and emulated within the Hex took great pains to restore the status quo at the end of any given episode. On Bewtiched, Sam s magic remained hidden and Darren stayed employed. The Bradys always found family unity and their housekeeper, Alice, always found the right quip. But WandaVision eschews that tendency — and, perhaps, Wanda s greatest wish — for such tidy resolutions.Although we now know Agatha s main objective was to steal Wanda s powers because she was undeserving, she is now imprisoned as nosey neighbor Agnes. It is unclear if she will continue to live in Westview with poor Ralph or in some sort of stasis near Wanda s Sokovian cabin. And though it feels like a fitting punishment, is it really Wanda s to dole out? She evaded any accounting for her own transgressions, after all. And while she did apologize to Monica, it feels incomplete without one of the townspeople offering some sort of absolution.Then consider what Westview becomes without the Hex: dilapidated houses and a nearly abandoned downtown. It was on the brink of economic collapse before Wanda got there. And yet, the obvious pain its citizens were in, compounded by Wanda inadvertently forcing them to experience her own, means her cosmetic enhancements came at a terrible cost and further cement her as a villain. Nevertheless, Wanda is also the protagonist and by the grammar of the shows she idolized, she should be able to at least restore Westview to some prosperity as reparation. The fact she cannot is an interesting counter to the world she tried to make for herself. And in removing the Hex, she sacrificed the handful of things which brought her some joy in the weeks since the battle with Thanos.(Photo by Marvel Studios)Of course, trying to weigh that out leads back to the question of authenticity Vision and The Vision confronted. Does the pain she unleashed to create a false reality negate the grief she was in? Whose pain is the pain?That ambiguity, and the haunting foreshadowing of the Scarlet Witch as an extinction-level event, is something we ll have to live with until Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness picks up the thread. But as we were always sympathetic to Wanda s grief, we hope the character finds the help she needs and comes back from the brink.In the meantime, we ll congratulate WandaVision for using the grammar of television and the language of sitcoms to present these ideas to us. The wait for a Spider-Man: No Way Home teaser seemed like one of the longest in the still-uncertain fall and winter 2021 movie season. The film itself was delayed a couple of times due to the pandemic, and for a moment, it seemed as though Sony might decide to change its release date as it did with Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Thankfully, No Way Home is sticking with its December 17 release, and the studio finally offered fans a glimpse of the movie on Monday night. Since it will like be the next big chapter in the Marvel Multiverse story, we re taking a deeper look into the trailer to see what we can glean about both those cosmic implications of the film and the personal story of the title character.As always, we are aware that trailers sometimes omit key characters, jumble up scenes and dialogue, and attempt to obfuscate the plot of the film. At the same time, it s fun to dig into these big trailers for clues, so let s get started.Spider-Man: Threat And Menace(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)Seemingly, the film will open with Peter (Tom Holland) and MJ (Zendaya) trying to flee the fallout of J. Jonah Jameson’s (J.K. Simmons) proclamation about Spider-Man’s identity at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home. At least, we’re assuming Jameson isn’t buying all the Time Square billboards for weeks on end. Also, the shots of Spidey and MJ near the subway entrance, swinging across town, and getting surrounded by helicopters feel like they’re happening immediately after the Far From Home stinger.Nevertheless, some time will have passed, as the couple are seen on a roof discussing the latest tabloid theories about Peter. The shots of Peter, MJ, and Ned (Jacob Batalon) returning to school (and the subsequent shots of the Halloween lights) also imply Peter’s problems will drag on well into the school year even if the police and the Department of Damage Control (the DODC agent also appears to also wear a S.H.I.E.L.D. logo at 0:29) cannot hold him. But as Peter mentions, he, Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), and Ned will be under constant surveillance and scrutiny from the various agencies looking to prove Peter killed Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal).Even if he doesn’t have to lie to MJ anymore, it’s clear the weight of this will be too much for Peter to deal with, and his support system of Aunt May and friends will not be enough to help him through it. Instead of giving up on being Spider-Man, though, he does have at least one other option.Enter Doctor Strange(Photo by Matt Kennedy/©2021 CTMG)In a frozen Sanctum Sanctorum – which is either happening because Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Wong (Benedict Wong) never fixed the roof or because of a joke we haven’t seen in full – Peter asks Strange for help. Removing Mysterio’s knowledge of Peter’s identity seems simple enough, but the trailer implies it s bad idea, as Wong straight-up tells Strange not to cast the spell. Not that we re entirely convinced this is the spell Wong’s referring to in the full scene Remember the iced over Sanctum? Wong may just be worried about that.Then again, tampering with time is something Wong tends frown on. Also, Strange’s wink to Peter indicates he is being admonished for even suggesting he can change the past. We imagine Strange, for his part, is feeling pretty cocky again after saving half the universe. That attitude got him into so much trouble before and, really, being overconfident is the man’s chief flaw.Also, where is Wong headed with all that luggage? Is he relocating to Kamar-Taj on a permanent basis? Have some of the other Sanctums been rebuilt? Come to think of it, there are a number of unknowns from the first Doctor Strange film which could end up being addressed here as the subsequent shots of Peter and Strange falling through reality – and Strange giving Peter the out-of-body whammy – means he’ll be around for a good portion of the film. It’s not like Peter can re-balance the Multiverse on his own right?The Nature Of The Multiverse(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)One thing the trailer doesn’t do is offer any clarity on the issues raised by the Loki television series. Well, sure, Strange mentions the Multiverse by name, but it is quite unclear if he has any idea about the old state of play He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors) held in check. One theory of the Loki finale suggests the loss of He Who Remains is retroactive and the Sacred Timeline never actually existed from the point of view of characters like Strange. So that limited knowledge about the Multiverse s nature may be even more limited than he suspects.Which, really, makes tampering in the timeline a really bad idea. You’d think Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) debriefed Strange on what the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) told him about tangent timelines. Then again, in a Multiverse where the Sacred Timeline never existed, that rooftop discussion in Avengers: Endgame might have occurred very differently.And while we’re talking about the movies occurring differently than they did, the nature of Strange’s spell threatens to completely upend Peter’s life. If no one knows he’s Spider-Man, that means Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) never recruited him, he never received the upgraded suits and, possibly, Tony never learned the empathy necessary to have a child or volunteer to end Thanos.But perhaps we’re overthinking this, and, instead, the spell just backfires, unleashing more problems and more people who know Peter is Spider-Man.The Sinister Three?(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)The trailer gives us three villainous images to ponder for the next few months. First, there’s the yellow lightning at 2:13 in the trailer. It could be more Multiversal chaos, but it could also be Electro (Jamie Foxx). Sure, his electricity was blue in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but yellow was Electro’s classic color back in the comics. Is it possible, this isn t the same Electro from the Amazing series and, instead, the MCU version of the character? Will we see Foxx in the classic mask?Next, there’s the Green Goblin s not-quite-pumpkin bomb and his familiar cackle at 2:28. Then, finally, Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina) appears at 2:41, confirming not only his presence in the film despite Molina doing that himself months ago but also that he fully recognizes Peter for who he really is. So, at least as far as the Multiversal characters go, Peter’s original wish to be unknown will be unfulfilled.All of these teasing moments suggest half of a Sinister Six ready and able to end Spider-Man, particularly this Spider-Man. Will the others appear to help him out? That remains to be seen.That said, there may yet be at least one more villain lurking in the shadows 2:26 in the trailer. It may be Doc Ock’s extra limbs, but it could also be made of sand or even an alien symbiote.Black Suit Confirmed(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)Not that this is connected to our musing about a symbiote in the darkness, but Peter is clearly wearing a black Spidey suit at 1:15-1:18 of the trailer. The existence of the suit was spoiled by early toy line product images, but to see it in the trailer leaves one wondering why Peter would choose to wear it. He’s also seen in the more “classic” MCU suit and the Iron Spider suit from Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Perhaps it’s just another variation of costume in his arsenal, or, maybe, it is a symptom of the problem Strange suggested is caused by Peter’s attempts to be two people. Will the suit just change to black because the Multiverse is breaking down around him?Spider-Man No More?(Photo by Marvel Entertainment)Because of the complicated Spider-Man movie rights shared between Sony and Marvel, No Way Home represents Peter’s last solo adventure in the MCU for now. He is meant to make at least one more appearance in either an Avengers 5 or some other hero s film. But considering the dichotomy Strange refers to in the trailer, is it possible No Way Home will end with Peter no longer being Spider-Man? It may be the only way for him to restore peace and quiet to his loved ones. And it would explain why he’s rarely around when universe-shattering events force the MCU heroes to assemble. Perhaps Holland’s last MCU appearance will see a de-powered Peter helping out in a different way.Or, maybe, Peter will have to seek refuge in another universe…Spider-Man: No Way Home opens in theaters on December 17, 2021.On an Apple device? That bore Rotten fruit with The Village and The Happening, which set off a bum streak with big-budget sci-fi and would-be blockbusters: The Happening, The Last Airbender, and After Earth.The Visit in 2015 would be a back-to-basics, comeback horror effort. Its box office and relative critical success set the stage for the Certified Fresh Split, which brought back the dark superhero world of Unbreakable. In November, he reunited with his frequent collaborator Martin Scorsese for Casino, a companion piece of sorts to their 1990 masterpiece Goodfellas. Just a few weeks later, he shared the screen with fellow acting titan Al Pacino for the first time in Heat, Michael Mann’s cops-and-robbers epic.Yet at the time, this one-two punch wasn’t necessarily regarded as a triumph. Sky-high expectations for a de facto Goodfellas follow-up and a Pacino/De Niro team-up meant that both movies garnered a lot of reviews that were more respectable than ecstatic, and months later these two awards hopefuls received a grand total of one Oscar nomination between them for Sharon Stone’s career-best performance in Casino.Criticisms leveled at both movies at the time zeroed in on the crime-picture familiarity that now makes them feel like classics. Some came down especially hard on the idea that Pacino, Pesci, and particularly De Niro were repeating themselves. De Niro had delivered gentler, change-of-pace performances not much earlier in movies like 1990 s Awakenings and 1993 s Mad Dog and Glory, and the close proximity of Heat to Casino wound up calling attention to his characters’ similarities across the two films: Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly described him as “a scowling cipher, a forbidding synthesis of dictator and monk,” then a few weeks later noted that in Heat, “as in Casino, he’s playing an ice-minded humanoid.”It’s true that both movies find De Niro acting in a chillier register than his work in, say, Taxi Driver or The Godfather Part II (to say nothing of the genuinely sweet Mad Dog and Glory). Sam “Ace” Rothstein, the mob-affiliated casino boss he plays in the Scorsese picture, and Neil McCauley, the career criminal he plays in Heat, do their respective jobs with ruthless professionalism. McCauley offers the spiel that lends Heat its title, explaining that anyone serious about the heist business needs to be able to drop all attachments “in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner.” Ace, in the meantime, is the kind of exacting control freak who demands one of his buffet chefs put an equal amount of blueberries in each muffin. If Neil and Ace are less immediately magnetic than even some of De Niro’s more villainous characters the scene in Heat where he must rebuff the vaguely inexplicable interests of Amy Brenneman is one of cinema’s least romantic meet-cutes the tension in both movies comes when the De Niro character’s detachment is challenged.That’s visible in the famous Heat diner scene, the mid-movie sit-down when McCauley meets with cop Vincent Hanna (Pacino) over coffee. As the conversation continues, Mann catches more of each actor’s reactions, cutting to them when they’re listening, not just when they’re speaking. So much of the scene’s drama happens in the actors’ eyes, as De Niro portrays McCauley, briefly freed from the responsibilities of organizing a major heist, making thoughtful considerations as he answers Hanna’s questions about his motivations. The scene probably wouldn’t be as effective without De Niro’s unforgiving exterior, and it certainly wouldn’t be as chills-inducing with other actors.In Casino, the steely enforcer lets his guard down in an early scene where he proposes marriage to Ginger (Sharon Stone), negotiating and equivocating about how their “mutual respect” can lay the groundwork for a good partnership, even though she doesn’t love him, and says so upfront. It’s more subtle than either pleading or outright strong-arming and, as such, both heartbreaking and a little pathetic.(Photo by ©Universal courtesy Everett Collection)It’s no shock that De Niro is actually great in both of his 1995 movies, though it is a little surprising that even after their reputations grew, he still managed to be underestimated. The images Casino and Heat projected of the actor as a serious, driven professional were especially appropriate for that stage of his career a stage that these two movies helped bring to a close. His filmography is too long and varied to categorize every performance, but Heat and Casino are arguably his last two big-ticket leading-man parts in the crime genre that made him famous. Over the next few years, he would do a lot of character and supporting parts (Sleepers, Cop Land, Jackie Brown, Great Expectations) and some self-conscious riffs on his past roles (The Fan revisits both Taxi Driver and Cape Fear; Analyze This parodies his mafia parts; Meet the Parents depends on his tough-guy image). Later, he would do more comedies, often about aging and/or families, sometimes to great effect (Silver Linings Playbook; The Intern), sometimes less so (The Big Wedding; The Family).Many of these later-period movies are about bringing De Niro back down to earth, even when they’re not directly kidding his on-screen history (and a lot of them do, beyond even his two comedy franchises). Sometimes this can be read as undermining his legacy, sticking him in unserious paycheck-friendly gigs like Dirty Grandpa or Grudge Match when he “should” be doing more projects with titans like Scorsese, who took a 24-year break from casting De Niro after Casino, or big-name auteurs like Mann. While it’s true that De Niro has appeared in his share of movies that aren’t especially worthy of his talent, it often seems that he’s both willing to work and remarkably free of ego in the work itself.(Photo by ©Lionsgate)His characters in Casino and Heat are quite the opposite; they wouldn’t be caught dead doing jobs that could be perceived as beneath them. (McCauley’s promise to Hanna in the coffee-shop scene makes this more or less literal.) They’re men of discipline, yes, and certainly McCauley displays less hubris than Ace, who at one point broadcasts his own television show to settle scores with the Las Vegas gaming commission. But they’re both larger than life not because of particularly gregarious personalities, but because they loom outside what Heat refers to as a “regular-type life.” De Niro can get away with moments of unemotional minimalism because of his own towering work before these movies, especially the volcanic outbursts of Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, The Untouchables, and Raging Bull, among others. In 1995, at least, his reputation preceded him.Neither of De Niro’s 1995 movies were received as a farewell to the iconography and prestige involved with being the legendary Robert De Niro, and knowing his work ethic, they probably weren’t intended that way, either. But 25 years later, they play like De Niro has honed his most familiar tics into a sleek, efficient weapon. Heat and Casino both prepare him for middle age, and this doesn’t just mean his comic roles and character-actor parts. Look at an underseen later-period De Niro movie like Stone: It generates plenty of intensity as his parole officer character faces off against a prisoner played by Edward Norton, but this is a life-sized De Niro, his anger and violence repressed, his disappointments flattened out.This extends to his recent reunion with Scorsese, The Irishman, where he plays a hitman as an unquestioning working stiff. The film is powered by the idea that maybe those classic gangster movies were even sadder and less glamorous than viewers entirely realized at the time something else that both Heat and Casino were preparing for back in 1995, when they were met with good-but-not-great receptions. Neil McCauley orchestrates a precise and ambitious heist, falls in love, and the LAPD still catches up to him; Ace Rothstein ends his long, detailed, decades-spanning story about Vegas with a shrug as he returns to bookmaking. Maybe a lot of those beloved De Niro icons were secretly workhorses all along.Casino was released on November 22, 1995. Heat was released on December 15, 1995.On an Apple device?
