He’s a larger-than-afterlife presence, making him an excellent foe for Fraser’s enthusiastic determination. It Shares the Same Exaggerated Gung-Ho Sense of Exploration(Photo by Universal Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Indiana Jones is a bad archeologist, but he’s an amazing hero. Same with O’Connell and Evie, who are destructive grave robbers even by 1920s standards. That’s not the point of these films, though. The point is to go on an adventure, using the past and exaggerated mysteries of foreign lands as inspiration.Watching O’Connell scream into a decomposing mummy’s face or watching Indy knock a Nazi into some propellers is a hoot, but the battles aren t necessarily what make the films so memorable. It’s the journey into the unknown, following our friendly heroes into archaic, unfamiliar terrain. The matinée serials and pulp magazines both franchises draw from harken back to a very specific era for exploration, one that didn’t ever truly exist as it appears in pop culture, yet feels very nostalgic. The characters of Indiana Jones and The Mummy both live at a turning point of world history, right at the cusp of what we’d recognize as the modern world. It doesn’t seem like there’s much new to discover, so instead, archaeologists Indy and Evie turn to history. And in the world of these films, there’s far more buried in the past than the modern world expects. It’s a romanticism of sorts, one that’s not without its problems, but it makes for an exciting adventure at the crossroads of the past and the present, the intersection of the known world and the unknown. Both The Mummy and Indiana Jones are Way More Violent Than You Might RememberEven though The Mummy is more of an action-adventure romp than a horror movie like its classic predecessor, there are still plenty of scares and suspenseful moments. Indiana Jones operates on a similar level, because it wouldn’t be as exhilarating to see Indy whip his way through danger unless viewers, on some level, really feared that danger. Still, even if you re aware that The Mummy boasts a few scary moments, if you haven’t rewatched it in a while, you might be shocked at just how violent it is.Raiders of the Lost Ark literally melts a dude’s face off during its climax when the Nazis open up the Ark of the Covenant, and who can forget the horrific sight of Mola Ram extracting a still-beating heart from a poor man s chest with his bare hands in Temple of Doom? Taking a page from the same playbook, The Mummy blasts a bunch of excavators with acid, and that’s just a warm-up. Imhotep steals eyes and tongues from his victims, flesh-eating beetles gorge themselves as they crawl beneath the skin of their victims, and there’s plenty of torture. That the movie is technically pretty bloodless only makes the extent of the other gore even more shocking to watch.Raiders of the Lost Ark is infamously rated PG, as the PG-13 rating hadn’t yet been introduced. The Mummy, on the other hand, does sport a PG-13 rating, but in classic Indiana Jones fashion, it pushes the limit. Archaeology is dangerous, violent business, or so these movies would have you think. But for those of us slogging through our decidedly less exciting everyday lives, adventures like The Mummy and the Indiana Jones franchise before it provided thrills and ignited our imaginations like few others did. We don t get a lot of movies like The Mummy any more, and that s perhaps why lots of folks still remember it with unparalleled affection. The Mummy opened in theaters on May 7, 1999.

4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)If the footage from the Avengers: Endgame trailers is to be believed, the original Avengers will be reunited to avenge the loss of their friends, and well, half of the universe. To do this, they’ll need a clean shave (lookin’ at you Cap), new haircuts (Hello Hawkeye), and superheroes from every Phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to help them. We don’t know what will happen after the dust settles (or reforms into our favorite superheroes), but we do know it will be a colossal conclusion to the successful 10-film third phase of the MCU.In honor of the grand finale to Phase 3, and in preparation for a new wave of heroes taking over, we’ve done a Tomatometer deep dive into the 21 films that make up the three phases of the MCU so far. The result? Eighteen fascinating – we hope! – stats about the MCU, covering every one of the Marvel Studios films released since 2008. Dig in below, and let us know in the comments whether you agree or disagree with the Tomatometer s findings.1. THE AVERAGE TOMATOMETER AND AUDIENCE SCORES FOR THE ENTIRE MCU ARE ALMOST IDENTICAL — JUST 1.7% APART.(Photo by Zade Rosenthal/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Average Audience Score: 82.1% | Average Tomatometer Score: 83.8% The average Audience Score for every film in the MCU is 82.1%, while the average Tomatometer score is 83.8% — so much for pretentious critics! A 1.7% split is almost unheard of with single films at Rotten Tomatoes, let alone when averaging out scores across 21 movies. Critics and fans: Assemble!2. THE IRON MAN, THOR, AND CAPTAIN AMERICA TRILOGIES EACH HAD DIFFERENT TOMATOMETER TRAJECTORIESIron Man (93%) | Iron Man 3 (79%) | Iron Man 2 (73%)Thor: Ragnarok (92%) | Thor (77%) | Thor: The Dark World (67%)Captain America: Civil War (91%) | Captain America: Winter Soldier (90%) | Captain America: The First Avenger (80%)It’s fitting that franchises featuring playboy billionaires, Asgardian gods, and a clean-cut super soldier would have Tomatometer trajectories as distinct as their titular heroes. The Iron Man trilogy started super Fresh (93%) and its sequels couldn’t recapture the first installment s glory, whereas Thor and Captain America finished very strong (91%, 92%) with the highest Tomatometer-rated movies in their trilogies. Only Captain America avoided a sophomore slump with Captain America: Winter Soldier (90%), while Thor: Ragnarok (92%) totally redeemed its franchise by making a 25% improvement after the near-Rotten Thor: The Dark World (67%).3. BLACK PANTHER IS THE TOMATOMETER KING.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)When looking at the Tomatometer averages for superheroes who have been in at least three MCU movies, they don’t get any better than T’Challa’s 91% Tomatometer average. He has appeared in Captain America: Civil War (91%), Black Panther (97%), and Avengers: Infinity War (85%). Also, the 97% Tomatometer score for Black Panther is the best in the MCU.4. Iron Man has the highest Tomatometer and Audience Score combined average: 92%.Talk about strong beginnings: 2008’s Iron Man comes out on top when you average out each film’s Tomatometer and Audience Score. The Tomatometer score for Iron Man is 93% and the Audience Score is 91%, making for an average between the two of 92%. We know a certain “genius, billionaire, playboy philanthropist” who would be very happy to hear this.5. THE BEST TOMATOMETER STREAK HAPPENED BETWEEN 2017 and 2018. Phase 3’s Spider-Man: Homecoming (92%), Thor: Ragnarok (92%), Black Panther (97%), Avengers: Infinity War (85%), and Ant-Man and the Wasp (88%) all have above-average Tomatometer scores for the MCU (the MCU average being 83.8%) and average a stellar 90.8% on the Tomatometer. It’s a Pixar-level run that was capped off by Black Panther receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture.6. THE WORST TOMATOMETER RUN HAPPENED BETWEEN 2008 and 2012.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Nowadays, after all of the Tomatometer success the MCU has enjoyed, it’s hard to believe that The Incredible Hulk (67%), Iron Man 2 (73%), and Thor (77%) couldn t muster Tomatometer scores above 80%. Those scores aren’t bad at all, but by modern MCU standards, they’re a little lacking. We can’t be too rough on these films though, because the MCU was still in Phase 1, and the next films released were Captain American at 80% and the 92% Tomatometer-rated The Avengers.7. Guardians of the Galaxy is the most loved brand in the MCU, according to the average Audience Scores for their movies (89.5%).Other brands — heroes with one sequel or more — still don’t fare too badly: Captain America (85%), Ant-Man (81%), Iron Man (80%), and Thor (79.6%).Turns out people love A-holes who save the galaxy while listening to awesome music. The James Gunn-directed movies have a totally different vibe to their MCU counterparts (OK, Thor: Ragnarok gives us some GOTG feels), and audiences have latched onto it. You have to admire how Gunn,  the maestro behind Super and Slither, has managed to bring some of his trademark oddness — a severed toe, Jackson Pollock paintings, and a villain who named himself “Taserface” — into the mainstream superhero movie domain.8. Captain America is on the best roll: Tomatometer scores have improved for each successive Cap’ movie (80%, 90%, 91%). (Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel)It is the only series in the MCU (and among other superhero trilogies) to see this trend. The Captain America series reigns over all MCU trilogies (Iron Man, Thor) when it comes to Tomatometer scores — its three-film average of 87% bests the rest. Also, it is the only superhero trilogy ever to start Fresh and get better with each installment. This is something Thor, Iron Man, Batman, Spider-Man, Blade, Wolverine, and the X-Men can’t claim.9. THE TOMATOMETER AVERAGES DROP WHEN DIRECTORS COME BACK TO DIRECT A SECOND OR THIRD FILM (89% first 82.5% second or third)Joss Whedon (Marvel’s The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron), James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Iron Man 2), Peyton Reed (Ant-Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp), and the Russo Brothers (Captain America: Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War) have directed 11 of the 21 released MCU films. The average for their first features is an excellent 89%; however, the average for the second or third films is 82.5%. All of their follow-up films were Fresh, mind you. And we re excited to see if Black Panther director Ryan Coogler can give the 82.5% average a boost when he returns to direct the sequel.10. THIRD MOVIES IN FRANCHISES HAVE THE BEST TOMATOMETER AVERAGE.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)Captain America: Civil War (91%), Thor: Ragnarok (92%), Iron Man 3 (79%), and Avengers: Infinity War (85%) have an excellent 86.75% Tomatometer average. On its own, the 86.75% average would be impressive, but when compared to the 85% and 79% averages for first and second franchise films in the MCU, it proves that the third time s a charm — according to the Tomatometer.11. Critics and audiences prefer MCU films that are over two hours.More is more in the MCU: The 15 movies in the collection that run longer than 2 hours have a much higher Tomatometer average than their five under-120-minute counterparts (86.7% compared to 76.6%). It’s a coincidence, but it’s worth noting that The Incredible Hulk (67%) and Thor: The Dark World (67%) are the lowest Tomatometer-rated movies and both have 112-minute running times. Good omen: Avengers: Endgame is apparently 182 minutes.12. MCU movies featuring human villains have a higher Tomatometer average.(Photo by © Marvel / © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Human Villains: 88.75% | Enhanced Humans: 80.8% | Non-Humans: 80.8%Unlike MCU movies involving villainous gods or bad guys who turn themselves into wild creatures, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Black Panther all feature human villains who don’t have special powers (to begin with) and work on the fringes in order to implement their plans. Critics seem to like this approach. Perhaps these villains connect because of their relatable, human motivations — Erik Killmonger wants to right worldly wrongs, Zemo seeks revenge, Michael Keaton s Vulture is after his version of the American Dream, and no one is getting in his way. Hela, on the other hand, wants to rule the universe — something only a couple of critics we know could relate to.13. FEWER DEATHS = BETTER TOMATOMETER SCORES.Of the 21 films in the MCU, only Spider-Man: Homecoming (92%) and Ant-Man and the Wasp (88%) feature fewer than 10 deaths perpetrated by the heroes or villains, and their Tomatometer average is 90%. On the flip side, the Tomatometer average for the six most carnage-heavy MCU movies – among them, Avengers: Infinity War, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Thor: The Dark World – is 84.8%. That s dragged down by The Dark World, but still, maybe Thanos should’ve only killed an eighth of the population.14. PHASE 3 CURRENTLY HAS THE HIGHEST TOMATOMETER AVERAGE OF THE MCU PHASES, WITH AN AWESOME 88.3%.(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, @ Marvel Studios)It’s kinda crazy that the first nine films of the eventual 10 films that will make up Phase Three of the MCU have an average Tomatometer score of 88.3%. The creative team at Marvel has been able to fine-tune its formula to the point where the lowest score of the Phase 3 movies belongs to the Certified  Fresh Captain Marvel, at 78%. The highest score belongs to the wildly popular Black Panther (97%). Phase 1 has an average Tomatometer of 80.3%, and Phase 2’s average is 80.6%. If the pattern of phase-on-phase growth were to continue, look for Phase 4 to pull off the near-impossible and collect an average of close to 100%. (Unless they break the Tomatometer, it ain’t gonna happen).15. COMEDY-HEAVY MCU MOVIES HAVE A HIGHER TOMATOMETER AVERAGE THAN MORE SERIOUS MCU FILMS (87.1% 82.2%).The main reason we wanted to drop this statistic is so we could discuss the greatness of Luis in the Ant-Man franchise. Sure, we love Korg (Thor: Ragnarok), Ned (Spider-Man: Homecoming), and Mantis (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), but they don’t have the storytelling chops that Luis has. Michael Peña’s portrayal of the ex-con who becomes a security consultant is pitch perfect and we can’t get enough of his truth-serum arguments and one-punch knockouts. It won’t happen, but we hope Luis pops up in Avengers: Endgame and saves the day — or at least drops some funny one-liners.16. MCU movies featuring female superheroes have higher Tomatometer (85%) and Audience Score averages (83.5%) than the MCU movies that don’t (80.8%, 78.6%).(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Captain Marvel is the only female-led superhero film in the MCU and won’t have any company in that tier until Scarlett Johansson s Black Widow hits theaters in 2020. However, movies featuring Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton), Okoye (Danai Gurira), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), Lady Sif (Jaimie Alexander), and/or Gamora (Zoe Saldana) have higher Tomatometer and Audience Scores on average than their more male-dominated counterparts.17. MCU movies featuring at least five superheroes teaming up have a higher Tomatometer average (87.3%) than their lone-wolf counterparts (82.1%).MCU movies that feature at least five superheroes teaming up to form a supergroup have a solid 87.3% Tomatometer average. These films include The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, Captain America: Civil War, Thor: Ragnarok (yep, we’re considering Heimdall in our count), and Avengers: Infinity War. It’s hardly a surprise these movies score so well. The best moments of the MCU often come from the camaraderie of super crews as they battle various hordes, or each other, and the universe’s big “wow” moments are usually big team-ups — think of the “gang’s all here” slow-motion shot at the beginning of Avengers: Age of Ultron, or seeing Ant-Man steal Captain America’s shield from Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War.18. Tony Stark = Box office gold.(Photo by Industrial Light & Magic/©Paramount/Courtesy Everett Collection)So, this isn t a Tomatometer stat, but it s damn impressive. The Iron Man trilogy may not have the highest Tomatometer average, but it is the highest grossing trilogy with a massive .7 billion worldwide haul (counting inflation). Seems that audiences love Robert Downey Jr.’s take on Tony Stark, and his appearances in non-Iron Man specific movies always guarantee success. He appears in five of the six highest-grossing Marvel movies (The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3, Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War), and, with Avengers: Endgame coming up, his worldwide tally will easily pass billion. If Avengers: Endgame is Robert Downey Jr.’s Marvel swan song, no one can say the team at the big M didn’t get their money’s worth from him.Like this? 4.71.6 6月喜迎It s been a while since Jennifer Lopez has generated Oscar buzz, so the kind of praise we re seeing for the actress out of the Toronto International Film Festival may surprising at first. But her performance in Hustlers (2019) 87% is the talk of the town following its premiere Saturday night. Fortunately, the movie itself is getting positive reviews overall, too. The first batch of reviews from the festival note that this crime drama, adapted from a New York magazine article about a group of NYC strippers with a more-than-entrepreneurial streak, is not what it looks like based on the advertising. Hustlers is a classic underdog story and an award season crowdpleaser through and through. Its inspirations are far more Scorsese than Showgirls. Here’s what critics are saying about Hustlers:Wow, so the movie is better than expected?“Everything you’ve seen so far is what is known as a ‘cheat’ in the marketing business…[this] is much deeper than all that glitters on the surface.” Gregory Ellwood, The Playlist“Hustlers is a lot smarter than it initially looks.” Stephen Whitty, Screen International“Hustlers is never anything less than energetic, freight-train-fast, and impeccably plotted…it’s also a welcome twist on the crime thriller genre and the ripped-from-the-headlines, can-you-believe-this-is real drama.” Kate Erbland, IndieWire“There are so many immediate pleasures and vicarious thrills to be had in Hustlers, a giddy, gaudy blast of a movie.” Benjamin Lee, GuardianWe re hearing Goodfellas comparisons: True?“An incisive commentary on women in the workplace…surprisingly enough, it shares cinematic DNA with the 1981 juggernaut 9 to 5.” Beandrea July, Hollywood Reporter“[It] does for a gang of New Yawk bad girls what Goodfellas did for the mob…adapted by writer-director Lorene Scafaria at her most Scorsese.” Peter Debruge, Variety“Scorsese in stilettos, Goodfellas slathered in frosty lip gloss and body glitter, this is a must-see Girl’s Night Out movie.” Courtney Howard, Fresh Fiction“Scafaria’s direction is equally confident [with] an opening that’s Martin Scorsese by way of Paul Thomas Anderson.” Stephen Whitty, Screen International “Hustlers soon blossoms into the kind of snappy sendup producer Adam McKay might make, with a deft and definite feminine touch.” Kate Erbland, IndieWire“Hustlers is a crowdpleaser to its core.” Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm

You know what s cool? A billion dollars. And in this town, it s true. A movie making that minimum seven figures isn t cool, it s a box office bomb. But 10 figures? Now we re talking. Cracking a billion dollars globally requires a mighty recipe of the hottest stars, the shiniest filmmaking technology, and an engaging plot with twists and turns that never becomes super-duper complicated. And, of course, you ll need an audience willing to turn out in droves the world over, from America to Lebanon to Zambia. Now we ve compiled all of the movies that have achieved just that and ranked them by Tomatometer. It s a compelling window into our era of blockbusters and inflation. The Transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean series each have multiple entries, in the years before the franchises were run into the ground. Alice in Wonderland showed the way for Disney and these newfangled live-action remakes. The last Lord of the Rings was rewarded by fans with the highest gross of the trilogy, goodwill that transferred into The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and then evaporated after that. The presence of the Jurassic and Star Wars movies, along with Skyfall, shows you can still wring plenty of money out of long-in-the-tooth franchise. Then there s the superheroes. The Dark Knight movies officially ushered in the era of big business for those who take their comic-book moviemaking seriously. Marvel took a lighter step, focusing on interconnected stories that create serious FOMO for those who skip the multiplex line, in movies like Avengers, Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, and Black Panther. And now as Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker forces itself into the mix, we re ranking every movie that reached billion by Tomatometer ! And if you want to go more in-depth, check out our article on The 50 Highest-Grossing Movies Ever, which includes some of those lesser specimens that couldn t quite break a billion.

(Photo by Warner Bros./courtesy Everett Collection)All Joaquin Phoenix Movies Ranked by TomatometerAfter making three movies in the 80s credited as Leaf and then disappearing, Phoenix returned to the public eye, this time under his birth name Joaquin, for 1995 s To Die For. In that Gus Van Sant erotic thriller, Phoenix plays a high schooler seduced by Nicole Kidman to murder, thus beginning the actor s penchant for performing disturbed, frequently mordant characters, carried further through the 90s in movies like Clay Pigeons, 8MM, and U-Turn.Phoenix became a near-household name after playing sword-and-sandal scumbag Commodus in Best Picture-winner Gladiator, in which he got his first of three Oscar acting nominations. But for several years after, Phoenix remained in character actor mode, taking supporting roles if he found the movie compelling (Quills, Hotel Rwanda, Signs), in between lead star parts such as in Buffalo Soldiers and The Village. In 2005, Phoenix broke into that echelon of truly transformative actors, owning the Johnny Cash role in Walk the Line, which walked him right into a second Oscar nomination. A long period of reunion collaborations has followed, working frequently with clearly favored directors: To Die For s Gus Van Sant (Don t Worry, He Won t Get Far on Foot), James Gray (Two Lovers, We Own the Night), Rwanda s Terry George (Reservation Road), and P.T. Anderson for Inherent Vice and The Master, the latter marking the most recent time he became an Oscar nominee. His last film, Joker, rampaged into theaters riding a wave of controversy and buzz, all the way to become the biggest-grossing R-rated movie ever. So put on that smile as we rank all of Joaquin Phoenix s movies by Tomatometer!

There are certain faces who are iconic to the second-wave feminist movement from the 20th century. Ms. magazine co-founder Gloria Steinem, with her aviator glasses and her outspoken views on relationships and birth control, is a hero to many. Betty Friedan’s book, The Feminine Mystique, was, arguably, the pin in the movement’s explosive grenade. And then there’s Phyllis Schlafly. Schlafly used all the techniques that these women did to get her voice heard, such as publishing her own newsletter and speaking eloquently to the masses and to legislators about her agenda. She, too, was routinely undermined and pushed aside by those with more power who thought they knew better. But the difference is that she was working for the other side, arguing against the Equal Rights Amendment and for sticking points like “family values”; she is, therefore, not remembered as favorably by feminists as her counterparts. So it’s an interesting choice that the new Hulu miniseries Mrs. America — which premieres the first three episodes on April 15 — will tell the story of the people of this era with Schlafly as an entry point, documenting her own struggles for acceptance in a man’s world, while also looking at the dichotomy of how (and at who’s cost) she achieved recognition.(Photo by Sabrina Lantos/FX)“As a writer, I like the challenge of getting inside the mind of a character who is completely different from me and who, ideologically, I completely oppose,” creator and showrunner Dahvi Waller (Mad Men) told Rotten Tomatoes about her series, which features an all-star cast that includes Cate Blanchett as Schlafly, Rose Byrne as Steinem, Tracey Ullman as Friedan, and Uzo Aduba as politician Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress and the first black candidate to receive a major party s nomination for U.S. president.“I do want the audience to be rooting for Phyllis, certainly at the beginning,” because, she said, “if we re going to understand women like Phyllis, who had quite a bit of influence on the polarization of the country, then we have to understand her appeal.”Women who had worked with Schlafly, who died in 2016, told Waller that she had been their Joan or Arc. But, both on the show and in real life, Schlafly used contradictory rhetoric, telling her followers to stay home and be with their husbands and children while she left hers to tour the country.“She’s such a polarizing figure and quite contradictory, but it’s undeniable that she’s a contemporary woman who’s really changed the course … of the American political landscape,” Blanchett told Rotten Tomatoes and others during a phone conference. “And I think she did that by shifting the language. She really did move the notion of anti-abortion, which then became pro-life, as a central plank into the Republican party and labeled everything ‘pro-American’ and ‘pro-family’ and characterized the feminist movement as being anti-family.”(Photo by Pari Dukovic/FX)Mrs. America concentrates on a timeline starting in 1971, when Schlafly got involved in striking down the ERA, to when Waller says Schlafly completed “her greatest goal, which was to be appointed to [the] Reagan cabinet.” It is also not a straight historical biopic and comes with a disclaimer. Still, all language and events are taken from documented speeches or biographies, including Schlafly’s penchant for fudging the truth; in one instance in the series, she tells her husband, Fred — played by John Slattery — that she was accepted to Harvard Law School, even though the institution didn’t accept women until some years later. The series is also careful with potentially libelous material, such as not outwardly stating that Schlafly was a racist, because the writers and researchers couldn’t find any documented evidence of such views beyond innuendos and rumors that she was a member of the John Birch Society. They also didn’t speak with movement leaders who are still alive, like Steinem, or speak with family members.(Photo by Sabrina Lantos/FX)It’s also hard to ignore the parallels between the era in which Mrs. America is set and today’s political climate. In the show’s third episode, Chisholm is urged repeatedly to drop out of the Democratic race for president lest they risk splitting a vote and giving the White House to the Republicans — not unlike the threats lobbed at senators and 2020 presidential candidates Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders.“One of the reasons you want to focus particularly on the four days in the [1972] convention was because it had so many parallels to today and that tension within the Democratic party between pragmatism and idealism,” Waller told Rotten Tomatoes. “Should you go for what you believe to be right and true? Or do you go for what you think you can get? You know, that is still so relevant today.”Similarly, she says it was important to include Republican faces in the feminist movement, such as Jill Ruckelshaus (played by Elizabeth Banks), as a reminder that the women s movement used to be bipartisan and that there were a lot of Republican feminists leaders. Other people, like Brenda Feigen-Fasteau (played by Ari Graynor) may not have been major players in a miniseries just about the feminist movement, but Waller and her team found her important to include because she and her husband debated the Schlaflys.(Photo by FX on Hulu)All of this may make it seem puzzling why, given her ambition, Schlafly didn’t seem to publicly acknowledge how much the ERA – which set out to given equal protection to all U.S. citizens regardless of gender — would have helped her.Blanchett says Schlafly grew up in a household where her mother was the breadwinner, but her frequently-unemployed father was still considered the patriarch and that she used to say of Fred that he “saved her from the life of a working girl.”“I think that she had a foundational understanding that she needed to be able to take care of herself; that she needed to be incredibly capable and able to earn a living should she be abandoned should be left alone,” Blanchett said of the mother of six. “So she was always the most overqualified person in the room.”This isn’t to say that one cannot learn anything from Schlafly — or her tactics.“The thing that Phyllis did identify, perhaps more roundly and more realistically than the feminists [at that time], is that in order to reach equality, certain white men power are going to have to share their privileges,” Blanchett said, adding that “she knew which side she was going to stand on.”Mrs. America launches on Wednesday, April 15 on Hulu. Join us weekly as Rotten Tomatoes reports on what s opening, expanding, and coming to the specialty box office. bob娱乐体育官网 surroundings. The show itself created all of these little definitions and buzzwords to categorize when people do certain things (“close talker,” etc.) that has since given us a lexicon to understand that behavior. It also encouraged us to do that in our own lives, so it not only created this vocabulary to understand the world but inspired us to expand it. And it, of course, deeply entertained us with each new reminder how times may change, methods of communication change, how we process the world may change, but what we do within that understanding really doesn’t change all that much. Which feels like a suitably bittersweet lesson for the show’s misanthropic view to impart.Allison Keene,  TV Editor, Paste Magazine: The nothing-ness of the show encompasses all of the little universal experiences and pet peeves and desires that transcend its time and place. Seinfeld is wacky, hilarious, and incredibly smart, but the conversations and arguments and observations remain with us because we ve experienced them, too. The touchstones of the series — whether it be low-talkers or seeing someone sneeze while naked or the results of The Contest, etc. — all speak to the fleeting, mundane thoughts we have, but here they are augmented into something important and meaningful. Seinfeld gave context and importance to life s weirdness, and that s why it still resonates today.(Photo by Castle Rock Entertainment/Courtesy Everett Collection)Liz Shannon Miller, freelance TV critic for Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, and The AV Club: It s strange to look back at Seinfeld and realize just how much of an impact it had on pop culture, an impact that still resonates today with phrases we use. They re real and they re spectacular is still something I say on a semi-regular basis, just because after 20 years or so, certain phrases get hardwired into not just our brains, but society itself. In the future, as we cluster around trash fires in the ruins of civilization, someone somewhere will probably tell a friend, No soup for you! Even if the context is lost, the meaning will endure.Peter Mehlman, writer and producer for Seinfeld: For the most part, [the show s most quotable lines] just came organically. In the case of double dip … it doesn t take any big genius to come up with that. With some of the others, like master of my domain and sponge-worthy, they were more creative and brilliant — they just came up as a natural bit of writing. It wasn t a concerted effort to come up with new terms for things. There was no poignant moment ever in a script — it was all about just being funny.Jennifer Keishin Armstrong, author of Seinfeldia: How a Show About Nothing Changed Everything: In many ways both social media and streaming have bolstered Seinfeld s legacy. The show and its characters lend themselves well to memes, and several sites, artists, and internet personalities have dedicated themselves to keeping Seinfeld alive. In 2013 a street artist named Jayshells made a reproduction of the poster for Rochelle, Rochelle, one of Seinfeld s fake movies, and put it up in Manhattan. Photos of it went viral online. We had @SeinfeldToday on Twitter, which pitched ideas for plots that could be on a modern version of Seinfeld. And we still have @seinfeld2000 on Twitter, an internet character obsessed with getting Seinfeld back on the air. (He s a creation of a TV producer named Jason Richards.)The characters were hilariously specific and oddly relatable(Photo by Columbia TriStar Television/Courtesy Everett Collection)Gilchrist: Their personalities don’t always translate directly to ourselves or our circle of friends, but the behavior of Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer is deeply recognizable to us, and quite often in an unflattering way. We’ve all made choices, had social gaffes, and discovered little superficial patterns of behavior that became ridiculous pet peeves among both the people we cannot stand and the people with whom we’re the closest. We become our own obstacles to happiness because we can’t put aside those things — discarding friendships, relationships, and business exchanges because of an infringement that crossed an imaginary line in the sand. We may even be technically right to do so! But the wonderful thing about the show is that as entertaining as it is for us to watch, those decisions very seldom brought the characters greater or lasting happiness. Mostly, just the opposite.Tom Nunan, Oscar-winning producer and lecturer at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television: It s so funny because these characters are so relatable. And everything about them seemed kind of right down-the-middle: The way they dressed and where they lived, everything was pretty ordinary-looking. They never tried to make it feel like fantasy. The Friends apartment just seemed like a fantasy version of being 20 years old in New York. Everything about Seinfeld s world was really kind of drab, and I think that s why we relate to it so much more. It was obviously a super-sophisticated, brilliantly-executed show, but they made it all look so normal, and I think that s what makes it so popular.Rick Porter, staff writer, The Hollywood Reporter: Because it was so huge in its time, it seeped into the larger culture in a pretty big way, from yada yada to master of your domain and having fundamentally unlikable people be the center of a show. It probably doesn t get enough credit for the last part, but the characters were all low-key awful a good half-decade before The Sopranos.Armstrong: As horrible as they were, why did we love them? They re just really well-defined. Part of the reason people loved @SeinfeldToday so much was that they loved imagining these characters in modern scenarios, and that s because we know them so well that it s easy to imagine what Kramer might do with Amazon or Elaine might get into on Tinder. These characters — and many who came after them — are proof that viewers aren t particularly interested in watching characters because they re good people. They want to watch characters who are interesting, and interesting people are often somewhere between imperfect and awful.Mehlman: It was before political correctness got completely out of hand, you know? There was a certain kind of innocence about it. Because it s all about just being funny, and just observing the world and not really making points. Characters on shows now are basically so good to each other and if they are not, they apologize. On Seinfeld, they screwed each other over every single week and remained best of friends the next week.Seinfeld disrupted the TV sitcom formula(Photo by Columbia TriStar Television/Courtesy Everett Collection)Nunan: The ambition that Jerry and Larry had for this — these multiple story lines and multiple scenes per episode — mixed with a cast that was a murderer s row of phenomenal, superstar comic talent … that kind of magic is rare. And then there s that old saying that this is a show about nothing. In other words, it s not about family cohesion; it s not about romantic comedy; it s not about politics. It s about what Jerry Seinfeld became known for as a comedian before ever signing onto his own show, which was about the little observations in life — these little things that are universal and that we all share in common.Thompson: It wasn t really about nothing. It was just about different things that television generally didn t deal with. It was about the kind of details of daily life that people go through. For example, the classic Chinese Restaurant episode that was not something about nothing, it was about something we very much deal with on a daily basis: waiting in line for a restaurant.Mehlman: You know, we didn t have a writers room. You basically pitched ideas to Larry and Jerry for each of the characters. They d say, I like that, or, I m not crazy about that. And you d go off and write on your own. The very first script I wrote for the show [was The Apartment ]. It was the first outside script they produced and it was just about Jerry absentmindedly telling Elaine that an apartment opened up in her building. That was the whole thing that they sent me off with. I added in this whole story about George going to a party wearing a wedding ring to see if it would really attract women. I just added that in as I was writing. And Larry and Jerry had no idea what that was going to be.The jokes were the priority, and no topic was off-limits(Photo by Columbia TriStar Television/Courtesy Everett Collection)Porter: I think it s the template for most of the hangout comedies that followed it. Stakes are never terribly high, which allows more room for jokes and bits of character work and giving everyone in the core cast their time to shine. You can see its DNA in everything from Friends to Happy Endings to The Big Bang Theory. The low stakes and jokes-over-all ethos of the show also gives it a more timeless feel. They all have landlines and stuff, but with a handful of exceptions, stories don t hinge on things that are so of their time that it feels dated. There s a B-story in one episode where Jerry taped a Mets game and doesn t want to know the score before he gets home to watch it, which How I Met Your Mother riffed on in a Super Bowl–themed episode and this still plays well in the current spoiler-phobic era.Mehlman: It was a very male-centric show. I think the big upside of that is that you got to see conversations in mixed company that you never saw before. You know, we got to talk about anything. So I think that made a lot of people feel kind of liberated. It was kind of a very male show, yet, I always felt that if you didn t have a good Elaine story, or if Julia didn t have a big part in an episode, there was no way it could be a great episode. All the great episodes needed to have really strong Elaine stories or you were in trouble.Seinfeld is available to watch by subscription on Hulu and to purchase in its entirety on FandangoNow, Amazon.com, iTunes, and other sites where you buy video on demand.
