(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp. courtesy Everett Collection)I saw Mrs. Doubtfire at the exact right moment. It wasn t on the day it came out, but maybe a year and a half later. My parents were about to embark on what would end up being a nasty divorce, and my father was no longer living at home. It was well before the 50% of marriages end in divorce world we re all deeply familiar with now, and my parents separation made me feel like an outlier in our slightly Stepford-ish Connecticut town. I didn t know anyone else whose parents were divorced. Would we survive it? It felt like the end of the world. My two younger siblings and I watched Mrs. Doubtfire for the first time on VHS, a rare universally approved pick from the local Blockbuster. Instantly, we were transfixed by Robin WIlliams effortless charisma. This was the dad that every kid wanted, and in my 9-year-old eyes, my father was a hilarious hero much like Daniel Hillard, an energizer bunny of a mostly stay-at-home dad, especially compared to my far grumpier workaholic mother. You d expect a story like this to totally villainize the mother, but what happened was something far different. The film quickly became a tender ode to modern families when love simply isn t enough, and what happens when families break apart for the better.(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp. courtesy Everett Collection)Mrs. Doubtfire showed that life could not only be okay after divorce, but that in some cases it was the best case scenario for everyone involved. It was clear that the Hillards were dysfunctional and in pain. Dan and Miranda (Sally Field) were in precarious positions and relying on slightly toxic habits to stay mentally afloat. And stuck in the middle of it were Lydia (Lisa Jakub), Chris (Matthew Lawrence), and Natalie (Mara Wilson), who were as lost and confused by this brave new world as my two younger siblings and I were, and who in many ways mirrored myself and my younger brother and sister. All of us, real or fictional, were desperately in need of our father s love and support, and rendered emotional and reactionary by all the new, seemingly unnecessary changes, complicated by a not entirely effective court system. But the film also provided us something else: a glimpse into the secret lives of parents.Look at the lengths to which Dan Hillard was going: He was willing to risk everything to see and be with his kids! I needed to believe that there was a reason why my father wasn t around, why this was all for the best in spite of it feeling like the worst. Mrs. Doubtfire s outlandish scenario gave me hope — after all, being Mrs. Doubtfire made Dan a better father (and even at a young age, I knew my father could stand to be a bit more, well, fatherly).(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp. courtesy Everett Collection)Watching it again as an adult proves the film to be even sweeter in that regard. Now a woman of 32 with much more context not only for my parents divorce, but the lives of moms and dads, I notice a real sense of compassion for both of the parents in the writing. When I m not with Daniel, Miranda admits to Mrs. Doubtfire at one point, I m better. And I m sure he s better without me, too. And we saw throughout the film how true that was: Without Miranda there to pick up the slack and give Daniel the easy out on enforcing responsibility and general childcare, he had to learn to step up. And without having to feel like a constant nag and familial buzzkill, Miranda was able to chill out a bit. Mrs. Doubtfire really did effectively co-parent with her! Being apart made them both better parents. And Daniel s speech at the court; the love he had for his kids? How badly he needed them? That he wanted them in his life even after the divorce, and would do whatever it took to do so? It s exactly what a young child wants to hear about fathers. That even when we don t see them or have them around, they re thinking about, fighting for, and caring about us, til the end. Of course, the film isn t perfect, but its heart was earnest in its intent.(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp. courtesy Everett Collection)My father did not turn out to be anything like Daniel Hillard during or after the nasty battle that followed, but the magical potential I saw in Mrs. Doubtfire of what life could be in a divorced family brought my tiny heart hope. It made the whole ordeal feel less ostracizing and more survivable. Maybe dad wasn t around because he was out there looking for a job and a good home for us to be able to visit — and after all that happened, mom would be happier, and so would dad, and we d all be okay in the end. Because there are all sorts of different families, as Mrs. Doubtfire tells Katie McCormack at the end of her children s show, but if there s love, dear you ll have a family in your heart forever. Mrs. Doubtfire was released on November 24, 1993.

k Widow 2 set in the five-year gap between Thanos s (Josh Brolin) death and Scott Lang s (Paul Rudd) return from the Quantum Realm. Would Natasha be as weary as she seems in Endgame? Why would she feel that way if she reestablished ties with Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz), and Alexi Shostakov (David Harbour). Did they get Blipped? Or did another falling out occur, leaving her to run the Avengers with occasional in-person visits from Steve Rogers (Chris Evans)? Alternatively, a sequel could see Nat and Yelena teaming up for another quip-filled adventure as the Red Room still needs further dismantling. Also, we ll point out here that another objective of Black Widow was to establish Yelena as a major Marvel player going forward, so we expect any Black Widow sequel would feature her. That said, a Marvel more comfortable with prequels could go back to the Budapest operation (even if we got the gist of what transpired in Black Widow) or even focus on a story in which Natasha is the villain during her time as a Red Room agent. More prequels mean more possibilities while still maintaining the deaths and actions of certain characters a feat even the comics can t pull off!Implications for the Hawkeye Disney+ Series(Photo by ©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)But speaking of Yelena, the film s most direct nod to Phase Four comes during the film s post-credit stinger, when the former Black Widow accepts a mission to hunt down Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), a thread that will be picked up in the upcoming Hawkeye television series. Shot in late 2020 and early 2021, the Disney+ series will see Clint training or assisting Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), a new Hawkeye with issues all her own. Also, we re pretty sure they re going to run afoul of tracksuit-loving mobsters and adopt an adorable golden retriever with a love of pizza. The project was one of Marvel Studios worst kept secrets, with its existence long-rumored and Steinfeld s part in it leaking a year before the studio made the news official and even then, photos of the actor in costume appeared on the internet a good week before studio president Kevin Feige finally confirmed her participation at the December 2020 Disney Investor s Day presentation. Another rumor about the show indicated Pugh would be making her first post-Black Widow appearance in the series. Then, in December of 2020, it was reported that Pugh officially joined the cast of the series alongside a handful of others. Just a couple of days ago, in an interview with Variety specifically about the post-credits stinger at the end of Black Widow, director Cate Shortland and Pugh essentially confirmed what everyone suspected when Pugh confessed that she didn’t ever really imagine that [her role in the MCU] would continue quite so quickly. It s worth noting, though, that as Black Widow was originally slated for release last year, the Hawkeye reference sets up something well into the Disney+ slate. It sidesteps the initially announced programs in favor of what will be Marvel Studio s sixth television program, although there is a nod to another TV show we ll talk about in a moment. As it stands now, Hawkeye will debut less than year after Black Widow, which means Yelena will be fresher in viewer s minds when she inevitably beats the living daylights out of Clint. The Contessa As Phase Four s Fury(Photo by ©Walt Disney Company)Of course, the stinger also features an appearance by Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). According to Feige, she was always meant to debut in Black Widow, with the stinger serving as a forward link to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. But since her debut ended up occurring in that series, the Contessa s appearance here has a slightly different effect it amplifies, rather than establishes, the notion that she s serving as Phase Four s answer to Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). As we theorized after TFaTWS s finale, the Contessa is collecting a team of her own. From her conversation with Yelena, we can gather that Yelena already works for her by the time she learns of Natasha s death on Vormir. But just what is the Contessa s aim in building her own Avengers? The character s comic book history offer some clues, as the character evolved into the most adept rogue agent ever trained. In her lifetime as a comic book character, she has betrayed S.H.I.E.L.D., Hydra, and seemingly Leviathan, although she could still be loyal to that group. So far in the MCU, the Contessa s subordinates include an ex-Russian spy and a failed Captain America. That doesn t feel like an accident, despite whatever promise of glory and country she feeds to John Walker (Wyatt Russell).(Photo by ©Walt Disney Company)Is it possible she runs the current incarnation of the MCU s Leviathan, the Soviet scientific research and espionage agency we mentioned in our round-up of Five Things to Remember Before You See Black Widow? Like Hydra, it was built to survive, and she could easily be its director. Then again, she could be working with Fury. The two have a long history in the comics, and she could be collecting Phase Four characters on his behalf. The motive: a further defense against whatever foe is up in space that Fury is planning for with the Skrulls (as glimpsed in the Far From Home post-post-credits stinger). But that all depends on whether or not the Contessa is in any way altruistic.Lastly, there is always the possibility that she herself is a Skrull and furthering an agenda to be revealed in Secret Invasion another Phase Four Disney+ series due next year.No matter the true answer, it is interesting to see a character assembling a new team for a shadowy purpose.Taskmaster As A Continuing Threat(Photo by Jay Maidment/©Marvel Studios)We admit this one may be built on a flimsy premise Marvel seemingly cast Olga Kurylenko for a two-line role in Black Widow. But a face as familiar as hers suggests to us that we will see Taskmaster again. For one thing, she s a great hand-to-hand foe. Imagine Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) or Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) facing an opponent who knows their every move. Try to think of the quip Clint will deliver after she squarely trounces him.But beyond the physical threat she poses to just about everyone, there is also a further story to tell about her. As opposed to her comic book counter, who is often just a mercenary, Antonia s story is one of trauma and the horrible realization that her own father put her in this situation. How will she come to terms with that? Will her freedom from mind control and apparent turn away from evil at the end of Black Widow actually stick, or will her anger lead her down the villain s path? If the latter, will she be clever enough to organize some of the villains herself, or will she fall in with someone like Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl)?(Photo by Adrienn Szabo/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Come to think of it, one of the few things Marvel Studios has yet to attempt is a villain team-up. Is it time for the Masters of Evil? Granted, they ll need a slight rebranding as that name hardly suits Zemo s style or politics.Marvel could also utilize Taskmaster as a recurring villain, which the franchise has done on occasion (not counting big bads like Thanos or Loki). Antagonists generally die or get completely de-fanged by the end of a Marvel movie, and one of comic book Taskmaster s great strengths is his resiliency. Antonia could prove more successful at the recurring villain role than Crossbones (Frank Grillo) or Batroc (Georges St-Pierre). Also, as Taskmaster fights everyone in the comics, Antonia could appear in anything from an Eternals sequel to the Moon Knight series to Blade.Black Widow is in theaters and streaming on Disney+ with Premier Access now.On an Apple device? 2.96.6 9月喜迎This weekend felt like a crucial mid-term for theatrical releases. Between the hybrid release controversies of the summer and the continued lack of attendance for non-IP originals, particularly those aimed at adults, it is still anyone’s guess what we are headed for come the holiday movie season. Barring the return of some new surge of virus infections (at least those numbers are headed in the right direction) people will hopefully feel safer filling seats at their local theaters. They certainly had a choice this weekend between staying home and buying a ticket. The latter won for one film while the former created some dismal numbers for another, casting a shadow over anything not part of a franchise the rest of the year.King of the Crop: Halloween Kills its Hybrid Release with million Debut(Photo by Universal Pictures)Before the pandemic, the focus on this weekend’s #1 movie would have been the drop from its predecessor’s million start in 2018. Halloween Kills’ million weekend is a 33.8% drop from three years ago, but even that can be put in a positive perspective looking at other sequel drops of this stature over the years. Among R-rated sequels to films opening over million, 300: Rise of an Empire (36.4%), Ted 2 (38.4%), Paranormal Activity 4 (44.8%), Sex and the City 2 (45.6%), The Matrix Revolutions (47.1%), and The Hangover Part III (51.5%) all dropped further. Alien: Covenant fell 29.1% from Prometheus but didn’t have nearly as far to fall as Halloween Kills did, leaving It: Chapter 2 (26.2%) and Deadpool 2 (5.23%) as the higher standards. The point is that this is a really terrific number for David Gordon Green’s sequel..4 million is the sixth-best opening of the pandemic. As it marks the third consecutive week of a film opening over million, that statistic may quickly become an afterthought, though it shouldn’t. Where Halloween Kills busted the ceiling this weekend was in the hybrid streaming wars. After it was announced the film would simultaneously premiere on the Peacock service the same day it premiered in theaters, its chances for widespread theatrical success appeared to be kneecapped. The first film was a rather frontloaded success story, posting just a 2.09 multiple over its opening weekend. Halloween Kills may be down 34% from the 2018 opening, but it is up 58% from the year’s best hybrid HBO MAX openings, with Godzilla vs. Kong and Space Jam: A New Legacy each in the million realm. Kong already had a two-day head start with .4 million prior to the weekend and to date is the only hybrid release (sans an additional fee) to crack the 0 million barrier. And that was a March 31 release that took over 11 weeks to reach that milestone. Halloween Kills is already halfway there in just three days.Kills also nearly doubled up The Suicide Squad (.2 million) for the best “R”-rated opening of the year in any release strategy. 54 million Peacock subscribers at last count compared to roughly 73 million for HBO MAX. (And those are late July numbers.) The five biggest WB/HBO MAX openings dropped like flies in their second weekends Godzilla vs. Kong (56.9%), The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (57.1%), Space Jam: A New Legacy (69.1%), The Suicide Squad (71.5%), and Mortal Kombat (73.2%). 2018’s Halloween fell 58.8% to .4 million in weekend two, so there’s a good chance Kills falls below million next weekend, especially if people realize they actually have Peacock on their cable service. Those who actually still have cable service.Rotten Returns: Ridley Scott s The Last Duel Reinforces a Grim Trend(Photo by 20th Century Studios)What may actually be the bigger story this weekend is the continuing failure of non-IP films aimed at adults to draw them in. Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel was speculated to at least get into eight-digit territory this weekend. Its fate was all but sealed when it opened to just 0,000 in previews Thursday night, and the final numbers were even worse than imagined. The historical drama with a cast boasting Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Jodie Comer, and Ben Affleck grossed a mere .8 million this weekend. That is less than Damon in Stillwater did this summer (.18 million) and the worst start for a Damon-led film opening in over 3,000 theaters. The previous low was We Bought a Zoo (.36 million), which nevertheless went on to gross over million over its 2011 holiday season release. There is a strong chance that The Last Duel will not even be able to leg itself out enough to outgross All the Pretty Horses (.5 million) or Stillwater (.2 million), leaving it as the third-lowest grossing Damon-led film ahead of only Suburbicon (.77 million) and Promised Land (.59 million), both of which were released in fewer than 2,050 theaters. The story is far grimmer than anything surrounding Damon’s perceived star power, though. The Last Duel represents a continuing trend in the pandemic box office for anything other than a sequel, franchise, universe-builder, or Disneyland ride to break out among audiences. Free Guy, Raya and the Last Dragon, and Old are the only films outside of those categories to gross over million this year. The Last Duel is about to become the third theatrical-exclusive film released this year in over 3,000 theaters that fails to gross even million. The Top 10 and Beyond: No Time to Die Takes Aim at 0 Million(Photo by Nicola Dove/©MGM)No Time To Die missed the opportunity to become the fifth film of the pandemic to gross 0 million in its first 10 days; instead it will take 11. With .3 million this weekend (a 56% drop) the 25th James Bond film is just shy of the milestone. That is a slightly better second weekend than F9 had ( million), though Bond is still nearly million behind its pace while also about million ahead of A Quiet Place Part II’s 10-day run. The film has a good chance to stick around the Top Five into just before Thanksgiving (and could hang on enough into that holiday) so we’ll stick with a final gross between 0-170 million domestically. Globally the film is over 7 million and could actually surpass F9’s 6 million to become the highest-grossing film of the pandemic era.Venom: Let There Be Carnage fell to .5 million (the second-best third weekend of the year), bringing its total to just over 8 million, still on a very solid pace for 0 million. That is about million below Shang-Chi’s third weekend and overall about million behind its 17-day pace. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings drove its total to over 8 million and is going to settle into the 5 million territory, suggesting that the Venom sequel will come in somewhere around the original Venom’s total of 3 million. The Addams Family 2, which is also on VOD for .99, is not far behind the pace of The Boss Baby: Family Business, which was also streaming on Peacock s subscription tiers. That animated film finished with over million. Addams looks to be in line to come in between -55 million. A24’s odd folktale, Lamb, managed to stay put in eighth place, falling from just over million to 3,000 and driving its total to million. Not too shabby, all things considered, and the studio can put this on its mantle along with the knowledge that David Lowery’s The Green Knight is going to outgross Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel.On the Vine: A Timothée Chalamet Double Feature with Denis Villeneuve s Dune and Wes Anderson s The French Dispatch(Photo by Courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures)Fear is the mind killer next week when Denis Villeneuve hopes people will take his advice and see his adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune on the big screen instead of watching it from their sofas on HBO MAX, which will begin streaming the film Thursday night. Actually theaters and the home service will be showing Dune: Part One, as the opening title card announces it. There is no release date or production start date for Dune: Part Two. Also finally opening is the animated film, Ron’s Gone Wrong, and Wes Anderson’s latest, The French Dispatch.Full List of Box Office Results: October 8-10, 2021
urth highest-grossing film of the year, and it certainly has its eye on third place. Second, however, could take a bit of work. Last weekend with an opening that rose above 0 million, the fourth Toy Story was ahead of the third film in the franchise by about million. At the end of this weekend, it is still ahead of Toy Story 3’s pace by about million even if it trails weekend two of part three .3 million to .9 million. Toy Story 3 had a run that did not see a drop of 50 percent until its 13th weekend. Part four dropped 52 percent this weekend, but also had farther to fall. The 2010 chapter fell 46.2 percent and 49 percent in its second and third weekends. Meanwhile, Toy Story 4 sits at 6 million domestic and 6 million worldwide; the sixth-highest total of 2019 to date. Of the 14 films to gross between 0-250 million after 10 days, only three of them (The Hunger Games, Spider-Man, and Toy Story 3) broke the 0 million domestic mark, but Toy Story 4 remains on track.Fresh Surprise: Yesterday Poised To Be One of Danny Boyle’s Highest Grossers(Photo by Universal Pictures)It may sound surprising to some, but Yesterday actually represents the best opening of director Danny Boyle’s career. Then again, it is only the fourth film in his career — on that has included Transpotting, 127 Hours, and Slumdog Millionaire — to open wide its first weekend. The last film of his to do that was 28 Days Later back in 2003, and it earned million. The Beach in 2000 was his previous high with .2 million, even if it remains his lowest scored film on the Tomatometer at 20% and just one of two Rotten films (including A Life Less Ordinary) in his filmography. With a 59% rating currently, Yesterday teeters on the edge of Fresh, but Universal is very likely more interested in the film s million start. (The studio partnered with Boyle on 2015’s Steve Jobs, which opened strong in four theaters but ultimately grossed just .7 million total.) Boyle’s Oscar-winning Slumdog is his crowning box office achievement with over 1 million, but it is also just one of three of his films to gross over million. Yesterday will be the fourth. Will the million–budgeted film have enough word-of-mouth to pass The Beach’s million?Top 10 and Beyond: Latest Annabelle Film Lags the First Two(Photo by New Line Cinema)Annabelle Comes Home opened this past Wednesday to .18 million. As of Sunday, it is estimated to have made .2 million, which is relatively low all things considered. Of the previous Wednesday openers that began with million or more, 47 Ronin (.61 million), Rocky Balboa (.85), The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (.36), and Magic Mike XXL (.89) were the only ones this century to not have million by Sunday. Annabelle Comes Home is the next-lowest after that with The First Purge coming in at .28 million. The first Annabelle made .11 million in its first five days. Annabelle: Creation made .15 million. They both opened on Fridays. Those other three films grossed million to million domestic. The million production has already grossed over million globally, so it is going to be just fine.Eight of the top 10 films this week are either sequels or remakes. John Wick Chapter 3 – Parabellum is approaching 0 million worldwide. It is also Keanu Reeves’ third highest–grossing live-action film after the first two Matrix films. Illuminations’ The Secret Life of Pets 2 has not picked up any international steam yet and is only at 8 million worldwide. Its path is similar to that of this summer’s Pokemon Detective Pikachu and is headed for somewhere between 1 million and 4 million — or, less than 0 million domestically below the first film. Men in Black International is doing better internationally, but much more poorly here. It is only at 9 million worldwide and still needs another 1 million to break even. The remake of Child’s Play cost 0 million less than MIBI, but is not exactly setting the box office on fire either after dropping 70 percent in its second weekend and stands at million.Far more successful is Paramount’s Rocketman. The million production has made over million domestic and 1 million worldwide — 0 million may be off the table now but it remains on track to exceed million. Disney’s Aladdin has crossed 0 million domestically, and its 4 million globally puts it in 63rd place all-time. It needs another million to break into the top 50.Lastly, we have the Avengers: Endgame record watch. Returning to theaters this weekend with new footage not seen in its first nine weeks, the Marvel title made another .9 million. At .76 billion worldwide, it is now million shy of Avatar’s all-time record. This Time Last Year: Dinos Superheroes Emerge Victorious(Photo by Universal Pictures)Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom had no challengers and won the box office for a second straight weekend with .9 million. Incredibles 2 also had nothing to threaten its second-place finish with .4 million, bringing its total to over 0 million. The best the week could offer was the sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, which opened in third with million. Also opening was the basketball comedy, Uncle Drew, which finished fourth with .2 million. The lackluster numbers below that title opened the door for Hindi film Sanju to finish in eighth place with .72 million. The Top 10 totaled 7.20 million and averaged 63% on the Tomatometer. This year’s Top 10 grossed an estimated 5.14 million and averaged 69%.On the Vine: Spider-Man Hopes for Avengers Bump, While Midsommar Chases Critical Acclaim(Photo by Sony Pictures)The next chapter of the MCU arrives when Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Will this film receive the same kind of box office bump that got Iron Man 3 over 0 million as the first one out of the gate after the success of the 2012 Avengers film? It currently has a 91% on the Tomatometer. (Spider-Man: Homecoming has a 92%, opened at 7 million, and went on to make 0 million worldwide.)Then Ari Aster returns with a new horror epic after the praise of last year’s debut, Hereditary, one of the 10 best-reviewed horror films of the decade. Based on the 85% that Midsommar has received so far, Aster (like Jordan Peele) has a shot to own two films on that list. The Full Top 10: June 28-30Toy Story 4 (2019) 97% – .93 million (6.92 million total)Annabelle Comes Home (2019) 65% – .37 million (.20 million total)Yesterday (2019) 63% – million ( million total)Aladdin (2019) 57% – .34 million (5.86 million total)The Secret Life of Pets 2 (2019) 60% – .09 million (1.20 million total)Men in Black: International (2019) 23% – .55 million (.00 million total)Avengers: Endgame (2019) 94% – .53 million (1.31 million total)Child's Play (2019) 64% – .27 million (.40 million total)Rocketman (2019) 89% – .87 million (.17 million total)John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parabellum (2019) 89% – .17 million (1.31 million total)

As the notion of January, February, and March being a cinematic wasteland begins to fade away, big movies are starting to hit theaters earlier and earlier every year. This month, for example, the two most anticipated movies by far are a pair of blockbuster animated sequels, one of which presumably marks the end of a wildly popular franchise trilogy, and early reviews indicate they re both likely to be just as successful as their Certified Fresh predecessors. After that, we ve got an effects-driven sci-fi adventure, an unusual horror-comedy-satire, and a tie between a remake of a Norwegian thriller and the sequel to a recent surprise horror hit. Read on for the Most Anticipated Movies of February, as decided by Want-to-See votes on RT and polls on our social media channels.1. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (2019) 90%(Photo by Universal Pictures)45,112 Want-to-See Votes#1 pick by our Twitter fans, #2 pick by our Facebook fans, #3 pick by our Instagram fansOpens February 22The third and presumably final entry in the How to Train Your Dragon series tops the list for February, garnering the most Want-to-See votes on RT proper by a hefy margin more than doubling runner-up The LEGO Movie 2. The primary voice cast, which includes Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, Gerard Butler, and Cate Blanchett, all return for the sequel, which finds Hiccup (Baruchel) seeking out a rumored dragon sanctuary to help alleviate the overpopulation problem on his home island, Berk. Along the way, he and his friends encounter a white Night Fury and its fearsome dragon-hunter owner (voiced by F. Murray Abraham). So far, early reviews are declaring The Hidden World another triumph, so fans hoping for another winning tale are in for a treat.Watch Trailer2. The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part (2019) 84%Ryan Fujitani21,853 Want-to-See Votes#2 pick by our Instagram and Twitter fans, #4 pick by our Facebook fansOpens February 82014 s The LEGO Movie was a risky endeavor that paid off, thanks to its stunning animation, wacky sense of humor, imaginative storytelling, and infectious soundtrack. This month, Warner Bros. attempts to pull it off again, reuniting original voice cast Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, and Will Arnett with new characters played by Tiffany Haddish and Stephanie Beatriz. The story follows Master Builder Emmet (Pratt) as he embarks on a mission to rescue Lucy (Banks) and his friends from an evil queen from the Systar System. Early reviews say that while The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part doesn t feel quite as fresh as the first film, it s still a hilarious, heartfelt movie the whole family can enjoy.Watch Trailer3. Alita: Battle Angel (2019) 61%(Photo by 20th Century Fox)1,110 Want-to-See Votes#1 pick by our Facebook fans, #3 pick by our Twitter fans, #5 pick by our Instagram fansOpens February 14James Cameron has been fascinated by the Japanese manga Battle Angel Alita for a long time, and it s taken almost 20 years since he first became interested in adapting it into feature film for us to finally get it. That said, it s Robert Rodriguez, not Cameron himself, behind the camera for this sci-fi tale that centers on a reanimated cyborg with no memory who slowly discovers the truth of her violent past. Reviews have been flowing in since its premiere, and while critics are split on the film s storytelling, most are enthusiastic about the special effects work, in true James Cameron tradition.Watch Trailer4. Velvet Buzzsaw (2019) 61%(Photo by Netflix)266 Want-to-See Votes#1 pick by our Instagram fansPremieres February 1Director Dan Gilroy re-teams with stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo, who powered his acclaimed thriller Nightcrawler, for this dark, Netflix-produced takedown of the art world. Gyllenhaal and Russo star as an art critic and a gallery owner, respectively, who become enamored with a series of paintings left behind by an undiscovered artist who died a mysterious death. Soon, the paintings begin taking on a life of their own, and the bodies start piling up. While Velvet Buzzsaw didn t get a lot of attention from our Twitter or Facebook fans, the horror-satire was the #1 most anticipated film for our Instagram users, and it garnered the fourth highest number of Want-to-See votes on the site. Critics have been divided but mostly positive on the film, but you can see it for yourself on Netflix on the first of the month.Watch Trailer5a. Cold Pursuit (2019) 68%(Photo by Summit Entertainment)109 Want-to-See Votes#4 pick by our Twitter and Instagram fans, #5 pick by our Instagram fansOpens February 8Lastly, we have a tie between two thrillers, starting with the latest entry in Liam Neeson s late-career vigilante phase, which managed to earn #4 placement in our Instagram and Twitter polls and #5 in our Facebook poll. Here, he stars in a remake of 2014 Norwegian film In Order of Disappearance, playing a snowplow driver who takes matters into his own hands when his son is murdered by a local drug lord. Reviews have already begun to come in for Cold Pursuit, and so far they say it not only delivers on its promise of action but also has a fair amount of humor and a more sophisticated storytelling than might be expected.Watch Trailer5b. Happy Death Day 2U (2019) 71%(Photo by Universal Pictures)161 Want-to-See Votes#3 pick by our Facebook fans, #5 pick by our Twitter fansOpens February 13The other film to tie for fifth most anticipated film of February is this sequel to the surprise hit from 2017 that effectively mixed horror elements into a Groundhog Day-style narrative. Set two years after the first film, Happy Death Day 2U once again follows college coed Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) as she is thrust back into the time loop she escaped in the first film. This time around, however, she discovers that her original killer has herself been murdered, and now Tree must figure out who the new killer is before it s too late. It earned the fifth most Want-to-See votes on RT and entered the top 5 in both our Facebook and Twitter polls, but it s the only film on this list that doesn t already have a Tomatometer score. You ll just have to wait until it comes out to find out how good a sequel it is.Watch Trailer
Netflix’s adaptation of The Umbrella Academy is both a delight and an often-sad look at difficult family lives and the scars of growing up with great expectations. Those expectations are even greater in the series considering that the mysteriously born children adopted by famous adventurer Sir Reginald Hargreeves were raised specifically to hone their extraordinary abilities and eventually save the world. Since the series is based on a comic book with super-powered people, it is reasonable to assume the show will have a few big fights or apocalyptic moments — and maybe some people in super-suits.As it happens, the apocalypse comes courtesy of the least likely of the Hargreeves children: seventh child Vanya (Ellen Page).Debbie DayFinally free of the drugs her father put her on and aware of her potential thanks to the mixed-up plans of Leonard Peabody (John Magaro), she decides to perform a violin solo at her concert with her full powers on display. A similar scene occurs in “The Apocalypse Suite,” the first long-form Umbrella Academy story by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá. But there is one big visual difference between the two versions of the scene: Vanya’s choice of outfit. In the comic book, her super-suit has a more traditional superhero (or supervillain) look — a form-fitting leotard with a black and white violin motif. In the television series, Vanya wears a smart, traditional suit that turns from black to white in the middle of her solo. When Rotten Tomatoes caught up with the cast a few weeks back, both Page and showrunner Steve Blackman shared some thoughts on the decision to reshape Vanya’s most powerful look and the choice to downplay many of the superhero tropes on display in the comic. For Page, that started with Vanya’s switch from the leotard to a suit.“I m tired that women always have to look a specific way, particularly in superhero sorts of things,” she said. “I m just tired of it.”His star wanted to embrace the black and white motif of the comics, but she didn t see herself necessarily in that skin-tight outfit,” Blackman explained. “It didn t feel right for her, so we respected that. We came as close as we could to the graphic novel in terms of sort of having her emotional transformation and this physical transformation. So it s just a different White Violin than the one from the graphic novel.”Page called Blackman and Netflix’s decision to back her idea a “testament” to their good faith and willingness to listen.“I have never worked on something that s of this scale and been able to wear what I want to wear and not have ridiculous, stupid, f ing conversations full of misogyny and homophobia and all kinds of things,” she said.(Photo by Christos Kalohoridis/Netflix)But even beyond Page’s strong feelings about her costume in the finale, the television show scaled down and grounded some of the fantastic imagery artist Bá brought to the comic book. Blackman acknowledged part of the decision comes from purely practical reasons: i.e., Luther’s (Tom Hopper) eight-foot gorilla body from the comics would break the budget.“It was just much harder to do it [that] way,” he explained.Instead, Luther’s body is contained in clothing that still implies the character’s unusual size and strength without requiring constant visual effects (like the Hargreeves butler, Pogo).Co-creator Way said the approach to Luther was “the best change” in terms of realizing Bá’s character designs on screen. But he admitted there was one stumbling block in talking with Blackman about the series: the deletion of the code names. In the comic book, each character is referred to by the number Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) gave them, the personal names they later adopted, and a superhero identity procured during their days as teen adventurers. Luther, for example, was known as “Spaceboy,” while Klaus (Robert Sheehan) was “Séance” and Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) was known as The Rumor. Way and Bá refer to the characters by these names, while Blackman chose to focus on the personal names.“There was a minute where they would use one of the kids real names, and I was like, ‘Who are they talking about,’ to Gabriel. ‘Oh, he s taking about Spaceboy or he s talking about Séance.’ That took some getting used to on my part,” Way said.(Photo by Netflix)However, the code names could always emerge in a subsequent season, Blackman said. He also noted that there were many times when Bá’s style worked for the series, like the striped shirt Diego (David Castaneda) wears when the family unites to confront Vanya — a direct pull from the artist s character model. He even pointed out Bá’s influence on Klaus’s on-screen look.Way added, “Klaus is a little more kind of rock and roll [in the comic] as opposed to this kind of dry goth he was in the show. There are changes like that, but I think they lend themselves to the way the actors were playing the characters.”Support of the book-to-screen changes is a sentiment definitely shared by the actors.“That s why I was interested in making [Umbrella Academy],” Sheehan said. “It’s much more interesting to show people who are supposedly super, or have these allegedly super abilities, couched in a very normal, familial, dysfunctional context.”(Photo by Christos Kalohoridis/Netflix)And even if the characters trade in a less traditional look through most of the show, superhero iconography — like the domino masks worn by the children — still permeates the show via the flashbacks to the Academy’s heyday. Also, the inclusion of Hazel (Cameron Britton) and Cha-Cha (Mary J. Blige) speaks directly to their comic book appearance in the second long-form Umbrella Academy story, “Dallas.” The duo s masks echo Bá’s design — if slightly scaled-down in stature — while their spirits largely transfer from the page to the screen. It was important to Blackman to bring those characters into the TV version of “The Apocalypse Suite” instead of waiting and adapting “Dallas” as a completely separate story.“You assume you re going to have four years or five years on television in the best of worlds — knock on wood — but I thought if I only have one season, I really wanted Hazel and Cha Cha to be a part of it,” he said of his decision to introduce those characters.(Photo by Christos Kalohoridis/Netflix )The series may downplay the costumes and code names of more conventional superheroes, but the powers of the Academy are never too far from frame. Klaus spends much of the first season reconnecting with his powers while Vanya discovers hers. One character more at odds with her abilities is Allison, whose ability to control minds is framed as a form of child abuse when the story begins. We are told throughout the series that she used her power to get her restless daughter to go to bed. Her husband happened to see it, took their child away from her, and filed for divorce. But when the audience finally sees the moment, it is not presented in a sinister light. As Raver-Lampman explained, the scene gives greater weight to Allison’s suggestion that “any parent who had my power would do the same. “I mean, that is a way of taking a little bit of the grief off of herself and the blame off of herself,” she added. “I think for her, it just was like, ‘I m gonna do it just this one time.’”To Raver-Lampman, Allison s whole struggle stems from the small uses of her power to make her life a little easier.“She got it from her father,” she said. “He was always asking her to use her power to make his life easier.”From there it snowballed it something her ex-husband definitely saw as abuse. The scene may make it a little more innocent and forgivable, but Raver-Lampan finally admitted, “If I caught my spouse doing that to our child, I would never trust them again.”(Photo by Netflix)Of course, trust is a big issue among the Hargreeves, and it remains to be seen if they can build enough of it among each other to prevent the apocalypse — another change from the definitive end of “The Apocalypse Suite.” But as the adaptation of Umbrella Academy proves, deviating from the source can yield spectacular results. The Umbrella Academy season 1 is available to stream on Netflix.

qq御剑电脑下载 (Photo by Everett Collection, Imaginal Disc and Labocine, and Touchstone Television)Four years ago, Rosa Parra wasn’t nearly as well-versed in film history as she is now. She’d just seen Wonder Woman, which sparked her interest in – now a love for – cinematic spectacles and women’s representation on- and off-screen. That was the launchpad for Parra’s film education and career in criticism – and her star just keeps rising.Parra’s passion is palpable. She’s driven not just by a love of visual storytelling, but by a desire to uplift Latinx stories. She started out writing movie reviews on a site she ran herself. In 2020, she co-founded the Latinx Lens podcast with her co-host Catherine Gonzales, where the two discuss history, icons, and recent releases. She’s also earning a bachelor’s in Film and Media Studies from Arizona State University. And that’s all on top of her day job as a lab technician. (In addition to her love of movies, she’s a self-identified “science person.”)“Everything I do with writing and preparing for podcasting, I do it after work,” Parra told Rotten Tomatoes. She dedicates her work commute and weekends to learning about film, too – sometimes with her kids, who she lovingly calls her “movie buddies.”“Having to balance it all is not easy, but if you are determined and you plan out, literally to the last minute of the day that you re awake – like, I have five minutes to do this in the morning – it s doable.”Rosa Parra is the co-host and co-founder of the Latinx Lens podcast. Find Rosa on Twitter: @rosasreviews.Have you returned to theaters? What was the first film you saw? Yes, I did. The day they opened! I had to go in there and watch something that deserved to be watched on the big screen, so I went in and watched Tenet. Man, that was an incredible experience.Do you have a favorite snack while you re watching movies?Ooh. I would probably say nachos. I love nachos. Are you pro- or anti-note-taking when you re reviewing?I will if I m at home because I have the ability to pause the film and actually take notes, and try to analyze what I just watched. If I m in the theater, I probably won t, because I don t want to miss anything that I m seeing.Do you read other people s reviews before you write your own?No, I try to do my own thing before reading someone else s thoughts. What is your favorite release of 2021 so far?So far, my favorite movie of the year is Identifying Features. It s a Mexican film that follows a mother who is seeking the whereabouts of her son who decides to cross the border and come to the United States. But then she doesn’t hear from him, so she takes it upon herself to go in search of him. It’s a smaller independent film, but it s so moving, it s so touching, and it s so riveting that it’s haunted me since I watched it.And actually, not that long ago, I watched Pig… I was like, oh, it might become my favorite of the year. But just by a little bit – by thin a margin, like a hair – it didn t make it. It s my number two, but Identifying Features still holds my top spot. What makes a good movie? It s going to differ from people to people. Because at the end of the day, film is subjective. It s an art. What I think is good, other people might not. It is a subjective medium. To me, a good movie is one that leaves me thinking about it hours, days, after I ve seen it – a movie that s re-watchable… But also that makes me feel something, whether it s sadness or it takes me back to my childhood, any childhood memories, or just makes me cry, or just overwhelms me with any form of emotion. I think that s certainly my definition of a good movie.

The first of many Certified Fresh awards came with her next movie, Rocket Science; being cast as Jessica in the Twilight franchise meant Kendrick would have a high-profile job waiting for her for years to come. Her career would soon become defined by steady versatility, appearing in a wide range of films like End of Watch, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, and Cake. Kendrick is particularly adept in comedy hybrids, as seen in in The Voices, A Simple Favor, 50/50, and Up in the Air, the last of which garnered her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nom. Meanwhile, she s been one of the 2010s most reliable musical stars – just look at Into the Woods, Trolls and, of course, the Pitch Perfect series. Her latest films were Stowaway and the Trolls sequel, World Tour. Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) 90% Although Avengers: Endgame feels like the spiritual end (it s right there in the title, after all) of the epic story that began with Iron Man back in 2008, the MCU s so-called Phase Three was always meant to conclude with the follow-up to 2017 s Spider-Man: Homecoming. Tom Holland returns as Peter Parker, who heads out with his classmates on a school trip to Europe, hopeful that he can leave the hero business behind for once. Of course, good old Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) turns up asking him for help, and he s asked to team up with another man with superpowers (Jake Gyllenhaal) to save the world from a number of elemental monsters. Critics say Spider-Man: Far from Home is a worthy step forward from Endgame that utilizes a potent blend of humor, teen romance, and action to reassure fans the MCU is in good hands. Sticky, webby hands, to be specific.
