亚博登录入口采用百度引擎5(Baidu 7)What do the four most successful – if not beloved – video game movie series have in common? They feature exclusively Rotten movies! But that doesn’t mean the Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider, and Resident Evil films don’t pack in the kind of fun set pieces and memorable characters that fans of their origin games are looking for, and which have kept those fans coming back for more. In the latest episode of Vs., Mark Ellis is powering up and deciding which long-running video game movie series is the best of all, despite what critics might say. He’s breaking it all down in five rounds: Box Office, Tomatometer and Audience Score, Characters, Best Foot Forward, and a special wild card round. Will it be the terrifying zombie action of the Resident Evil films or the bloody fatalities of Mortal Kombat? Or will Lara Croft swing in from nowhere to take the W? (We’d throw in a hypothetical Street Fighter win, but… let’s be real here.) Don’t agree with Mark’s ultimate call? “Finish him”… non-brutally, in the comments. On an Apple device? This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Tenet, and Tom Cruise s Space Project. This WEEK S TOP STORYSONIC THE HEDGEHOG (AND PROBABLY TAILS, TOO) TO RETURN IN 2022(Photo by Paramount Pictures)We may have had to wait a few more months (from 11/15/2019 to 2/14/2020) for the character design to be redone on Sonic the Hedgehog (Fresh at 63%), but Paramount is apparently attempting to avoid too much of a wait for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The studio has announced a release date of April 8, 2020 for the sequel, or just two years and two months after the first film, and that s even after they already factored in the various delays right now because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The sequel does not have a premise yet, but the ending of Sonic the Hedgehog teased both the debut of Tails the fox, but also the villainous return of Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik (now looking even more like his video game character). Director Jeff Fowler will return for the sequel, working from a screenplay by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, who also both worked on the first film. Ben Schwartz is also expected to return as the voice of Sonic, and he may also again be joined by James Marsden and Tika Sumpter (though neither is confirmed yet). Release dates are obviously changing all the time, but other movies scheduled within a month of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 include Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (3/25/2022), The Matrix 4 (4/1/2022), and Black Panther II (5/6/2022).Other Top Headlines1. PIXAR TRAVELS TO ITALY IN 2021 FOR THE SEA MONSTER ADVENTURE LUCA (Photo by Disney/Pixar)Movie studios are increasingly planting untitled films on the release calendar these days, especially when the title in question is a new property and not a sequel, prequel, or remake. So, we ve actually known for a while that Disney and Pixar were planning on releasing something next summer on June 18, 2021; we just didn t know anything else beyond that. Normally, Disney and Pixar might have made a big announcement at San Diego Comic-Con, but that, of course, ended up being replaced by last week s Comic-Con@Home, which had some big panels, but not as many as usual. Instead, we learned through other means (in this case, Collider) that Pixar s next movie after Soul (11/20/2020) will be a fantasy adventure set in Italy called Luca. We also have this fairly lengthy premise: Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, the original animated feature is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: he is a sea monster from another world just below the water’s surface. Some writers are already comparing Luca to both Call Me By Your Name (thanks to the setting) and Guillermo del Toro s The Shape of Water.2. JORDAN PEELE TEAMS UP WITH ISSA RAE FOR SCI-FI HORROR SINKHOLE (Photo by Priscilla Grant, MJP/Everett Collection)Ever since his breakout success in 2017 with Get Out (Certified Fresh at 98%), Jordan Peele has worn several hats (director, producer, and host) on a variety of horror, thriller, or related genre movies and shows, including Us (Certified Fresh at  93%), CBS All Access s The Twilight Zone, HBO s upcoming series Lovecraft Country, and this fall s reboot of Candyman. We can now add another project to his upcoming filmography, as he will be producing a sci-fi horror film for Universal Pictures called Sinkhole, in which Issa Rae (The Lovebirds, HBO s Insecure) will star. The premise revolves around a strange pit that appears in the backyard of what otherwise seems like a perfect home, with the added information that the original short story started as a writers group project with the theme, I married a monster, and that the story will explore themes of female identity and perfection. 3. AMY ADAMS BIZARRE WERE-DOG DRAMA NIGHTBITCH (Photo by Jef Hernandez/Everett Collection)Plenty of werewolf movies have been made since the 1920s, and along the way, the concept has certainly veered into comedy, such as with Jon Landis An American Werewolf in London, Michael J. Fox s Teen Wolf, and, one could reasonably argue, with Disney s Shaggy D.A. franchise. Now, werewolves are frequently men, but Amy Adams is now attached to star in a film called Nightbitch which will team her up with the Annapurna production company, with which she has worked four times before (The Master, American Hustle, Her, and Vice). Nightbitch, which is not technically a werewolf movie, will star Adams as a former artist who is thrust into stay-at-home domesticity after the birth of her son, who becomes increasingly worried that she may be turning into a dog. (Some versions of this story suggest it is actually the baby that is turning into a dog, but the official premise of the source novel, which comes out next summer, is pretty clear.)4. CHRISTOPHER NOLAN S TENET CHANGES RELEASE STRATEGY AGAIN(Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/©Warner Bros.)As the COVID-19 pandemic continues in the USA, movie theaters remain unsure about when they will be able to fully reopen. Last Friday, we heard that Warner Bros. was considering opening Tenet internationally first and then in the United States at a later point. That plan was confirmed on Monday when the studio released a press release that the film will be released in over 70 countries on August 26, 2020 before opening in the United States a week later, just in time for Labor Day weekend, but only in select cities. What s unclear is whether that Labor Day release will also then lead to a wider release for Tenet, or if it will end up adding something like a VOD release in lieu of a wide release (which may not be fully possible in September if not enough theaters are open in the USA by then). Of course, this also means that American movie fans will have to endure at least a week of possible social media spoilers during which the rest of the world understands exactly what Tenet is about.5. TOM CRUISE S SPACE PROJECT GETS 0 MILLION BUDGET AND MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE HELP (Photo by ©Universal Pictures)It probably was inevitable that someone would eventually want to make a big budget movie in outer space, but the when felt further away until recently. And if any movie star was going to attempt it (and do most of his own stunts), it was also probably obvious that it would be Tom Cruise. Just two months after we first found out about Cruise s plans to film a movie in outer space, the news broke this week that a deal has been made with Universal Pictures to fund the project with an atmospheric budget of over 0 million. It had already been known that the film will be directed by Doug Liman (who worked with Cruise on Edge of Tomorrow, Certified Fresh at 91%), but another name that has joined the production is Christopher McQuarrie, Tom Cruise s recent Mission: Impossible director (who s preparing to film movies #7 and #8 soon). McQuarrie will serve as one of the film s producers, and also contribute story ideas (a credit just shy of actually writing the screenplay). In related news, Top Gun: Maverick recently became just one of the many movies to have its 2020 release date delayed until next year (7/2/2021), which is almost two years after its original release date (July 12, 2019).6. BUZZFEED GETTING INTO MOVIES #14 WILL SURPRISE YOU!(Photo by Nicholas Kamm/Getty Images)In the 2000s, the popular news satire website The Onion announced that they would be getting into the movie business, but all we got was the little-seen 2008 project The Onion Movie. In that same spirit, Buzzfeed is now apparently hoping to have better success with a cinematic endeavor, as they are now partnering with Lionsgate for a theatrical film slate. Although we haven t gotten any specific examples of what a Buzzfeed movie might be exactly (documentary? drama? comedy? collection of cat videos?), the press release did say that the movies will be aimed at millennial and Gen Z audiences, so if you re over the age of 40 or so, these movies apparently won t be for you. Lionsgate and Buzzfeed expect to launch their first co-production sometime in 2021.7. COURTENEY COX WILL BE THERE FOR YOU (AGAIN), SCREAM 5 FANS(Photo by Dimension Films courtesy Everett Collection)When Neve Campbell was first announced in May to be in talks to return to the Scream franchise for Scream 5, this column predicted that we would soon hear about a few other returning cast members as well. That hunch was confirmed soon after with the news that David Arquette was returning as Deputy Dewey Riley, but it took another two months for Courteney Cox to be announced as returning as Gale Weathers. Scream 5 will be directed by the team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (A.K.A. Radio Silence), who are currently best known for last summer s horror comedy Ready or Not (Certified Fresh at 88%). So far, no new cast members have been announced, but presumably, that will soon change, and at this point, it s all but expected that Neve Campbell s return will be officially announced in the near future.8. SETH ROGEN PRODUCING PROJECT ABOUT SECRET HOLLYWOOD HUSTLER (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)It s not uncommon for directors, writers, or actors who first became famous for broad comedies to stretch out into more serious films. Recent examples of this include: Adam McKay (who went from Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy to The Big Short); Jay Roach (from Austin Powers to Recount and Game Change); and Peter Farrelly (from Dumb and Dumber to Green Book). Someone else who appears to be heading down a similar track is Seth Rogen, who is obviously best known for stoner comedies like Knocked Up, Pineapple Express, and This is the End. Rogen and his producing partner Evan Goldberg are partnering with director Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name) for an adaptation of the 2017 documentary Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood (Certified Fresh at 86%). Guadagnino will direct the adaptation about the life of Scotty Bowers, a former U.S. Marine who had a second career during the golden age of Hollywood as a pimp and hustler for many within the secret world of the studios and actors, frequently using a Hollywood gas station as a cover location. Details of Scotty Bowers life also inspired the Netflix series Hollywood. It s not yet known who will star in this film, but one has to guess that two possible candidates might be Channing Tatum (a friend of Seth Rogen) or Armie Hammer (who starred in Guadagnino s Call Me By Your Name).9. FAMOUS ACTORS TO PERFORM INTO THEIR SMART PHONES FOR WITHIN/IN (Photo by NurPhoto/Getty Images)Before 2020, most of us had presumably gotten pretty used to slick filmmaking and TV production styles, and then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and many TV shows essentially became very well publicized Zoom calls. It was probably inevitable, therefore, that there would eventually be a movie that was filmed in that style. Although Michael Bay is also producing a pandemic thriller called Songbird that may also look like it was filmed by the actors, the movie that sounds closest to that theme is called Within/In. The project is described as a made-at-home anthology film revolving around themes of confinement and isolation. Within/In will feature several established actors, including Julianne Moore, Don Cheadle, Chris Cooper, Rebecca Hall, Sanaa Lathan, Emily Mortimer, Alessandro Nivola, Rosie Perez, and Debra Winger. Since it s an anthology film, we can expect there to be several individual stories, but since it s also made at home, most of the actors also won t appear onscreen together (at least not physically). Many of the actors (including Chris Cooper and Griffin Dunne) will also be taking directing credits as they re basically directing themselves.

Gates and engage in more historical nonsense. Let’s hope Disney forks over another 0 million so he can finish the trilogy, whether that happens in theaters or on Disney+.4. SEAN BEAN LIVES! (Photo by (c) Touchstone courtesy Everett Collection)We’ve been programmed to accept that Sean Bean always dies in a spectacular fashion (e.g., Goldeneye ouch), and when his Ian Howe doesn’t fall prey to a Templar trap or an ancient catapult in National Treasure, it’s beautifully unexpected. While it would have been appropriate for Gates to let loose a one-liner  something like “I’ll treasure this moment” or “Prepare to meet your forefathers” as he sent Howe to an elaborate death, it doesn’t happen. In the end, Howe is simply arrested, which leaves him on the chessboard for future installments. After watching Bean die in (spoilers ahead!) Game of Thrones, Black Death, Equilibrium, Don’t Say a Word, The Island, Patriot Games, and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, just to name a few, it’s nice to know one of his fictional characters is still alive. Early scenes between Ben and Ian show us that the two genuinely like each other, and Ian isn’t happy about his sudden heel turn. As the film progresses, Ian turns out to be a suitable antagonist who is always one step behind, but never far. Plus, the more you watch the the movie, the more you begin to like Howe s henchmen, namely Phil, Shaw, Powell, and Shippen, if only because they seem friendly with Ben, and they aren’t completely terrible at being henchmen.5. IT HELPED FILL THE INDIANA JONES VOID(Photo by (c) Touchstone courtesy Everett Collection)Smack dab in between The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and four years before Indiana Jones helped coin the term “nuking the fridge” in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, National Treasure filled a much needed void. The constant travel, puzzle solving, justified thievery, and ancient treasures satiated our thirst for globetrotting adventure; from grounded ships in the Arctic to the reflecting pool in Washington D.C., the frantic pace and constant clues made the most of a proven crowd-pleasing formula.Throw in the fact that Benjamin Franklin Gates, Patrick Gates, and John Adams Gates (Christopher Plummer) are named after American forefathers, and you have a movie that embraces history and isn’t subtle about it. Plus, the 0 million budget, the use of actual landmark locations, and the wonderful production design by Norris Spencer ensured the film would age surprisingly well over time. These types of films don’t really exist anymore, and that’s one of the reasons why we still love it now. Also, we think Indy himself would approve of the way Gates and his crew made sure the treasure was shared with the world, because “it belongs in a museum!”National Treasure was released on November 19, 2004.

It is rare that the box office has an upset of the magnitude of this weekend s. It s even rarer that such a surprise victory does not come with the normal spoils one might expect from it. All the projections showed the adaptation of Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep leading the pack with a haul in the mid-20s to as much as million. Roland Emmerich’s WWII FX-laden updating of Midway was trailing even behind Last Christmas among most projections. Nevertheless, Midway bucked the odds – or the typically wrong tracking services – and pulled out a victory with .5 million, albeit one that is the lowest-grossing number 1 in November since 2012 when The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 – in its third weekend and in the doldrum weekend post-Thanksgiving – grossed .4 million.King of the Crop: Midway Causes Major Upset, But Faces A Battle to Profit(Photo by © Lionsgate)Midway s surprising victory at the box office does come with some caveats. Aside from the Twilight statistic noted above, Midway’s .5 million is the lowest opening weekend for Roland Emmerich since Stargate in 1994 (.6 million) and it seems unlikely to stretch to .5 million as that film did. (Though if this weekend taught us anything, it s that we should prepare for surprises.) That would then make it Emmerich’s lowest-grossing wide release since 1992’s Universal Soldier made .2 million. It will gross more than that but in the history of November only two wide releases – not rated “G” or “PG” – have ever opened to less than million and grossed over million. They were Martin Scorsese’s Cape Fear (.09 million) and A Bad Moms Christmas (.11 million).Lionsgate can surely promote Midway as “the number 1 film in the country” this week but it is still staring down a 0 million price tag with not a lot of international appeal for its American victory tale. Michael Bay’s Pearl Harbor grossed 0 million in international dollars. Lionsgate has only had nine films make as much as 0 million overseas: four were Hunger Games films and one was the final Twilight film. (The other four Twilights were released by Summit before Lionsgate acquired them.)Rotten Returns: Dark Fate indeed, for Terminator, but its Tomatometer score is rising (Photo by © Paramount Pictures)Paramount is not having the greatest of weeks. Their family film, Playing With Fire, is the worst-reviewed (24% on the Tomatometer) of the new releases this week; the nearly million-budgeted film grossed .8 million, which is hardly a disaster – and better than some projections – but not a rousing success, either. It is last week’s release of Terminator: Dark Fate, though, that is just not looking good; it dropped 63% to .8 million in its second week. A solid haul is not unheard of from here: Dark Fate is just a million behind Paramount s own Daddy’s Home 2’s 10-day gross (.21 million) just two years ago as it went on to squeak out over 4 million. But its second weekend is over .5 million less than what the Farrell/Wahlberg sequel earned in its second weekend. Dark Fate is also about a half-million ahead of The Muppets, which had a massive fallback in its second weekend back in 2011 and grossed over million. Terminator’s second weekend is also slightly behind that one (.08 million). However, an optimistic million finish means nothing without a stronger international showing and to date it sits at just 0 million when it is going to need more than 0 million outside the U.S. to break even. On the plus side, Dark Fate is one of those rare films whose Tomatometer score is actually getting better as it expands and more critics see it: it is currently Fresh at 72% after spending time in the 60s.The Top 10 And Beyond: Doctor Sleep Fails to Shine, Joker Enters The All-Time Top 50Doctor Sleep this week became the victim of too-lofty expectations. The numbers are truly disappointing though, which has pundits asking if Warner Bros. should have sold its connections to The Shining more forcefully – and whether there was an appetite for more Shining in the first place. Only four Stephen King adaptations have ever opened to over million – and two of them were this year with It: Chapter 2 and the Pet Sematary redux. (1408 and the first It were the others.) Inflation notwithstanding, Doctor Sleep had the 10th best opening for a King adaptation and at 73% on the Tomatometer ranks as the 11th best-reviewed theatrical release of a film based on the author s work.1980’s The Shining grossed approximately 9.5 million in adjusted dollars. Doctor Sleep’s .1 million start trails behind even Dreamcatcher, which opened to .02 million back in 2003. If you gave The Lawnmower Man an inflation boost from 1992, it would have grossed million today, right around what Mike Flanagan’s Ouija: Origin of Evil sequel opened to (.06 million) – though we should note that was 10 days before Halloween in 2016. The trouble for Doctor Sleep might have been with the release date. Horror is not a popular genre in November these days. Not a single horror film has grossed over million from a November start since before 2000. The Mist, a 2007 Stephen King adaptation released over Thanksgiving (and the 12th-highest–rated King adaptation at 72% on the Tomatometer) took in what equates to about million in ticket sales today on its first weekend. Also not a great genre in November: romantic comedies. At least, successful November rom-com releases have been pretty sparse. There have been some moderate numbers over the years for films like The American President (.07 million) and Love Actually (.69 million). Shallow Hal grossed .8 million, but that was sold more on its high-concept premise than as a traditional rom-com. Paul Feig’s Last Christmas began with .6 million this weekend. That puts the film likely in the - million range. As for those who are surprised Universal put out a Christmas movie in November, rather than December, it s not uncommon practice – and has worked well for some releases in the past. These November releases with Christmas in the title show the release strategy can succeed wonderfully, and fail spectacularly:How the Grinch Stole Christmas (.08 million opening / 0.04 million total)A Christmas Carol (2009) (.05 / 7.85)Four Christmases (.06 / 0.14)Christmas with the Kranks (.57 / .78)A Bad Moms Christmas (.75 / .1)This Christmas (.95 / .12)Arthur Christmas (.06 / .46)Almost Christmas (.13 / .15)A Very Harold Kumar 3-D Christmas (.95 / .06)Ernest Saves Christmas (.71 / .2)A Christmas Story (.07 / .29)All I Want For Christmas (.64 / .81)One Magic Christmas (.66 / .67)I’ll Be Home For Christmas (.89 / .21)The Man Who Invented Christmas (.35 / .52)In better news for Warner Bros. this week, Todd Phillips’ Joker has passed more milestones. Its 3 million domestic and another 0 million internationally gives the film 4 million. That means it has now joined the list of the 50 highest-grossing films of all-time. Say goodbye to Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (and say it soon to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and The Jungle Book once Frozen II and The Rise of Skywalker open) as Joker enters the list this weekend at 44th place; it is also headed soon to become the 44th film ever to reach billion.Maleficent: Mistress of Evil has had a bit of a rebound lately. It is going to pass 0 million at home sometime this week and it is now over 0 million worldwide. But it is still going to need about another 0 million before getting out of the red. The Addams Family is now well into profit with over 4 million worldwide, million of that domestically. United Artists Releasing (a combo of Annapurna, MGM, and Orion) had some rough box office results earlier this year with Booksmart and Laika’s Missing Link, but they have been more recently putting out movies that have been turning profits, like their remakes of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (a.k.a. The Hustle) and Child’s Play. The Addams Family will be their biggest earner to date.Check out Harriet star Cynthia Erivo s Five Favorite FilmsHarriet dropped 38% and made .2 million in its second weekend. Between that and its .46 million gross to date, the film is in the vicinity of Allied and Stranger Than Fiction, which each managed to just get over the million line. That could make it just the 18th film in Focus Features history to reach that mark.Fox Searchlight expanded Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit from 256 theaters into 802 and it just missed hitting the top 10 with .9 million. That puts the film squarely between the studio’s (500) Days of Summer, which went from a third weekend of .77 million in 266 theaters to .73 million in 817 theaters, and Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird, which made .51 million in 238 theaters in weekend three and jumped into 791 theaters the next week to gross .05 million. Those films had .35 and .72 million, respectively, after 24 days. Jojo Rabbit is at .1 million.Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite moved into an “official” wide release this week, expanding into 602 theaters. It grossed another .5 million, which is better than The Farewell’s move to wide release from 409-to-704 theaters in its fifth weekend, where it grossed .09 million. The Neon release also has a slightly better per-theater-average (,152) than Boyhood had (,900), when it jumped in the same period from 310-to-506 theaters. The Farewell had .2 million after 31 days; Parasite has .2 million (and another .5 million internationally); Boyhood had .5 million and grossed over million. I, Tonya is Neon’s highest-grossing domestic film to date with .9 million.Check out Parasite star Song Kang-ho s Five Favorite FilmsFinally, in limited release news, Amazon’s release of Shia LaBeouf’s autobiographical Honey Boy grossed 8,825 in four theaters. That is the second-best per-theater-average (,206) for Amazon to date, ahead of both Late Night (,576) and Beautiful Boy (,722), also each released in four theaters. The 2018 Suspiria remake had a ,019 average in just two theaters. It is also the fourth-best PTA of 2019 behind Parasite, The Farewell, and Avengers: Endgame. This Time Last Year: The Grinch Kicks Off Holiday Season With Plenty of GreenThe second weekend of November 2018 brought us Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, from Illumination. The feature-length animated version of the classic story opened to .57 million. Hanging strong was Bohemian Rhapsody, grossing .2 million and just getting over its first 0 million in 10 days. In third place was the Nazi monster film, Overlord, with .2 million and back in sixth place was Claire Foy taking over the role of Lisbeth Salander in The Girl In the Spider’s Web, which made just .8 million. Just before the weekend, Venom passed the 0 million mark. A Star is Born rose to 8 million and David Gordon Green’s Halloween was at 6 million. Marvel hasn t had a new movie in theaters in over a year, but the MCU is definitely still alive and kicking – just in a different venue. WandaVision, the first in a string of highly-anticipated streaming series from the studio, is set to hit Disney+ next week. A select group of TV critics and journalists was invited to take a peek at the first few episodes of the show, and the good news is that reactions on social media are overwhelmingly positive. (Full reviews will drop in the next few days.) Not only are Scarlet Witch/Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) back together again, but the show leans fully into the epic weirdness of it all and gives a wonderful hat tip to the classic American sitcom in the process. Here’s what critics are saying on social media about WandaVision season 1:IS IT WORTH THE WAIT?It is zany, precise, fresh, funny (cue laugh track) counterintuitive. The bigger picture will be revealed (we only get glimpses so far that all isn t right in Westview) but I m in no rush to leave town. – Nikki Novak, FandangoThe reason the #MCU is king of the hill is @Kevfeige’s amazing leadership and willingness to take risks like what you ll see in Wandavision . – Steven Weintraub, ColliderA terrific blend of big strangeness and aching heart. – Alex Biese, USA TodayThis show is banana pants crazy in the best way possible! – Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyHOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE BACK IN THE MCU?(Photo by © Marvel Studios)Weird, fun, and simply amazing, it feels so very good to be back in the MCU! – Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyMarvel is really going wild with its, well, vision. – Tanzim Pardiwalla, Mashable India#WandaVision is a weird way to return to the MCU (remember, it was MEANT to be the fourth project of of Phase 4) and will take some adjustment for those seeking a traditional superhero story, but I think it will grab people more and more if they accept it’s doing its own thing. – Eric Goldman, FandomDOES IT WORK AS A CELEBRATION OF CLASSIC SITCOMS?(Photo by © Marvel Studios)It is a blast to watch. It is so committed to the sitcom structure of story telling that it feels like a bold risk but it pays off and builds a mystery. – Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comIt is not a parody or snarky take on classic sitcoms. It’s the most respectful, sincere celebration of that art form that I’ve seen . Ever? – Brett White, DeciderIt’s great, weird, loaded with sitcom tropes and, what I wasn’t expecting, kinda scary. I’m dying for more. – Chris Hayner, GameSpotFans of vintage sitcoms will adore its commitment to the details, while still being genuinely funny. – Peter Sciretta, SlashFilmAlso — and I cannot stress this enough — hooray for half hour (more or less) episodes! Storytelling confident enough to be concise is one of my favorite things. – Alex Biese, USA TodayHOW ARE PAUL BETTANY AND ELIZABETH OLSEN?Aaron PrunerPaul Bettany absolutely deserves to be submitted for Best Actor in a Comedy at every awards ceremony.– Brett White, DeciderBettany is especially having a good time it shows. – Brandon Davis, ComicBook.comElizabeth Olsen’s performance is truly outstanding and one of those “Man, if awards shows weren t snobby about superhero stuff, she would likely get an Emmy nomination” situations. – Eric Goldman, FandomElizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany have never been better as these characters and I cannot wait to see where it goes from here. – Alex Biese, USA TodayALL THE EMMYS FOR ELIZABETH OLSEN IN #WandaVision – Ash Crossan, ET OnlineThe first two episodes of WandaVision will premiere on Disney+ on Friday, January 15. At the center of it all is Zendaya’s (Spider-Man: Far from Home) Rue, a 17-year-old drug addict who, as we learn in the program s pilot, suffered an overdose and was only saved because her younger sister found her in time. Rue s drug problem goes deep, and it s a perspective of addiction that TV hasn t really explored much. It s been nearly 18 years since the 9/11 terrorist attacks inflicted a deep wound into the fabric of America, but while we tend to focus mainly on the political aftermath and various military actions we ve been involved in since, not much attention has been given to the generation who grew up in this new reality.Stories following teens who are disconnected from their parental adult counterparts are nothing at all new, but positing Rue s introduction to the world with the fall of the Twin Towers playing out in the background helps to supply subtext to the challenges her and other young people have had laid out before them. And as her emotional issues begin to form, her parents are quick to have any and every diagnosis handed her way until she s juggling multiple medical fixes for multiple anxiety disorders — none of which are really proven to be sound diagnoses to begin with.Debbie DayInstead of handling the underlying problem, well-intentioned adults teach young Rue that the best way to cure what ails her is to treat her symptoms. As her relationship with her mother becomes fractured, and her father falls victim to cancer, it was shown as an inevitability that she d eventually graduate from medically-assigned prescriptions to her own experiments in self-medicating — all just to find the happiness that has, somehow, eluded her this entire time. There are other characters featured in the show, and yes, we re about to get to them. But it s necessary that we really explore Rue s struggles and motivations because, not only is Zendaya the lead of the show, her performance is the program s backbone. She is the ongoing narrator, walking us through the misadventures of her peers, giving us a fly-on-the-wall perspective of the bigger picture, as the series begins to unfold. And as Rue even admits, she s not the most reliable narrator. You know, because she s always high.(Photo by Eddy Chen/HBO)She may be out of rehab, but Rue s not at all into staying sober. As she s integrated back into high school life, we re introduced to a handful of her peers, all carrying around their own potentially traumatic baggage. Transgender teen Jules (Hunter Schafer) finds a version of solace in random sexual encounters with older men — except maybe it’s a form of self-harm — while high school jock Nate (Jacob Elordi) has extreme anger issues, leading him to extreme acts of violence. In episode 2, we learn that his flashy flavor of toxic masculinity is indeed masking some deep-seated sexual insecurities, all brought on at a young age after he discovers explicit videos of his father s secret homosexual escapades. Mix in the sordid connection that the older man Jules hooked up with is actually Nate s dad Cal (Eric Dane) and the show really takes shape into something even Bret Easton Ellis would envy. Then there s Kat (Barby Ferreira), the nerdy girl who loses her virginity on a drunken dare at a house party. From the initial shame brought on by discovering that her sexual awakening was caught on video, and distributed across the school — even prompting a brief body-shaming interlude with the school principal — she quickly learns of the connective power of sex and the internet. For the first time in her life, she s the object of desire and that discovery changes her entire life.(Photo by HBO)Euphoria is a show that is out to press people s buttons. Cut from the same unsettling cloth as angsty teen movies like Harmony Korine s Gummo and Larry Clark s Kids, Levinson — who has gone on the record about tapping into his own history with drug abuse to write this story — gives us a program that sounds a warning siren about the dangers teens continue to face in the real and online realms, especially for complacent parents everywhere, who are alerted to get involved in their kids lives and pay attention. The series features adults, but when they make their appearance, their roles are mostly presented as background fodder. Euphoria actually has a lot in common with the 2014 indie horror hit It Follows; the parents aren t really in the picture, the overall environment has an inescapable muted quality of a suburban purgatory, and the teens in both that film and this TV series are stalked by their own demons — of course, the ones in the HBO series aren t STD zombies out to commit post-coitus murder. But we digress.(Photo by Eddy Chen/HBO)All this said, there are definitely gripes with the show s tone and subject matter. Levinson has both writing and directing credits here, but at times it does feel as if his vision is a bit disconnected from the 2019 reality these kids are living in.Writing in The New York Times this weekend, health care correspondent Margot Sanger-Katz and Indiana University School of Medicine professor of pediatrics Aaron E. Carroll observed: HBO’s new series Euphoria portrays a youth bacchanal that’s a stretch even for Hollywood. The show suggests that our modern society, with its smartphone dating apps, internet pornography and designer drugs, has made teenage life more extreme and dangerous than ever before. Actually, nearly the opposite is true. Many of the problems these teens face, though, tend to be of the eternal variety, because, really, the trials and tribulations of disaffected youth will always be a thing. Rue s Hunter S. Thompson–style recollections inject an oddly engaging Fear and Loathing quality, giving Euphoria a pointed and visually stunning perspective.(Photo by Eddy Chen/HBO)Rue knows drugs are bad. But her self-hatred runs deep. This drive to be happy, along with her predisposition to despise herself, sets the foundation for the polarizing nature of the whole show. While it may be difficult for many of Euphoria s adult audience to completely relate to her struggles — and that of Jules, Nate, Kat, and the rest — certain visceral elements punch their way through the veil, reminding us of bullies from the past, of the suffocating pressures of adolescent life, of the burdening weight of societal expectations, and the primal need to be loved and accepted that drives each and every one of us to move on, if not exactly forward.Like this? 亚博登录入口 Zack Snyder confesses that he’d still be working on Zack Snyder’s Justice League if HBO Max’s release date didn’t put a hard deadline on the project – he’s a perfectionist! – but when he did finally put “pens down” on the film and characters that have been with him for so many years, it was a moment of catharsis. (And a time to open a few bottles of wine.) In an extended interview with Rotten Tomatoes Editor-in-Chief Joel Meares, Snyder went deep on his journey to Zack Snyder’s Justice League, recalling the most moving moments of the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign, why it was so important to put Ray Fisher’s Cyborg at the center of his story, the joy writing and directing Jared Leto and Ben Affleck for a new Joker/Batman scene, and what he wants the world to know about the passionate DC and Snyder fans who made the #SnyderCut a reality.Watch the interview above and read it below.(Photo by HBO Max)Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: You ve been with this project for so long, in so many different ways, and with these characters for even longer than that. And I m wondering, with that in mind, what was the “pens down” moment where you were like, Okay, this is it. This is the finished product. And how did you feel in that moment?Zack Snyder: We all had a glass of wine and toasted each other, the whole group – Debbie and I, and my visual effects team and my editorial team. I called a bunch of my friends who have worked on it, and we all just kind of had this cathartic moment where we said, Okay, it s done. It was funny because it was kind of a schedule [thing] – the schedule made it happen, thank God. If the pandemic… or if this movie was due to release in another month or two, we d still be working on it, I m sure. Thank God because they put us up against the clock; it was cool, it was a nice way to stop.Rotten Tomatoes: So you were tempted to keep going and tinkering?Snyder: Oh my god. I don t think we ever would ve stopped if we [didn’t have that deadline].(Photo by HBO Max)Rotten Tomatoes: I want to take you back to another moment – when you got the call from Toby Emmerich and the studio said, It s a go. We re going to do this. Can you talk a little bit about that call and what the feeling was to know that it was finally going to happen?Snyder: There was an initial call that said, Do you want to release the movie right off of your laptop, just as it is? I was like, Yeah, I don t think I want to do that. That doesn t really seem like it s going to be good for anybody. And then I said, Hey, let me just come into the studio and tell you what I would do. I went in and I just told them about the scope and scale and what I thought I could achieve. And then they all came over to the house and watched the movie that I had, down in my theater. And they were like, Okay, let s do it. First of all, it was a huge undertaking – it was a moment of dread and a moment of adulation. We had definitely reached a kind of cathartic tipping point where we felt like healing could start for all of us.(Photo by HBO Max)Rotten Tomatoes: “Scope and scale” – it s huge. What was it like to paint on this size of canvas and with this length to give the room to tell these stories as fully as you wanted to, and have – I don t know about complete artistic freedom – but to really stretch that muscle?Snyder: I mean, not to say we didn t have any oversight – we had the budget, we had these other things, constraints of COVID, there s a lot of things that did kind of keep us in the box, thank God. But as far as just me doing what I thought was cool, it s a hundred percent that. This is the cut that I completed in January of 2017 – give or take a little bit of squishing, but essentially that s it. So, to come back to it and sort of re-experience it was also quite a sort of reunion, if you will. And to see how it was going to – with all the visual facts and the design and everything – really be realized.(Photo by HBO Max)Rotten Tomatoes: You’ve said that Cyborg is really the heart of the movie, and you do absolutely get that sense watching it – to the extent that the title lands on this beautiful shot of Ray. And you get so much of this story about this man. Why was it important for you to really center Ray s character, Victor, in your story?Snyder: Chris Terrio and I, we had long conversations about it when we were getting ready to write the script for Justice League. When we were banging out the story, we felt like Cyborg as a character was really the one we wanted to focus on. We felt like he s an incredible character in the DC universe, he s an important character in the DC universe, and he just really needed his story told in a way that – in context of these other Gods – that established him in that pantheon. And that was really a thing we just, we really focused on from the beginning, and then it s really fun to see it realized because Ray does an incredible job.Rotten Tomatoes: Have you spoken to Ray and the others? I assume some of them have seen the film in its complete form – what s the reaction been like to seeing this vision?Snyder: Ray hasn t seen it yet, he s seeing it hopefully the next couple of days. But yeah, they ve been really supportive and incredibly enthusiastic about the film and about me being able to get it finished.(Photo by HBO Max)Rotten Tomatoes: So, we wouldn t be here without the fans and the huge campaign that brought us to this point. There are so many amazing stories of what happened during that campaign, and I m wondering, is there a moment, an interaction – I don t know if it s the retweets or it s the billboard or what it is – that really stands out to you as the thing that you ll take with you from this #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign?Snyder: Yeah. So many memories really, to be honest. I remember when there was the Comic-Con bus stops, that kind of started it. And then there was that big, gigantic billboard in Times Square. I think that made me really start to go, Wow, I don t know what these guys are up to, but this is legitimate caring. And whether it be the airplanes flying around Warner Bros. towing banners, or the million fruit baskets delivered to Ann Sarnoff when she became president of Warner – I think it was a combination of all those things really. But I really think in the end, it s just how supportive they ve been of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and mental health awareness. Really that is the jewel in the crown of what they ve accomplished. For me, it s better than any movie – the persistent campaign that these guys have mounted in regard to suicide prevention and mental health awareness. That s really it. I mean, they ve saved lives with their campaign and that s the bottom line. It’s fun to make a movie, but that s really cool stuff.(Photo by HBO Max)Rotten Tomatoes: Yeah. And that probably bleeds into what I assume you might say about the next question. But a lot of the discourse around fandom does, recently at least, tend to focus on “toxic” or negative fandom. And I m talking to you from Rotten Tomatoes, and we are part of the story in some ways – some fans don t like the scores on some of the films, etc. But for those who only focus on the negative side of fandom, what do you want people to know about fans of DC and fans of yours and what they ve been doing?Snyder: Listen, I think the fans… and, of course, you can t throw a blanket over the entire thing because this is a bunch of individuals. These people aren t professionals they re not paid to do anything they re just fans of the movies and, in my case, they just want the movie out there that I had designed and created originally. Then, along the way, they got involved in my cause for whatever reason; they had some sort of empathy or they had an experience themselves. And it s a combination of those things that I think has made the fans, this community that I interact with, what they are.Are there occasions of fandom where it gets out of control? Absolutely. We all know that. But the reality is that these fans used their voices to change the course of a giant corporation and to basically get a movie released that [might never have been released]. Someone would say, Oh, are you ever going to make a sequel? I m like, Well, there s no plan and Warner Bros. really has no interest in making a sequel with me. But is it more likely that a sequel to this movie would have been made than what happened? And the answer to that is yes. It just speaks to their actual power and I m proud to be associated with them.(Photo by HBO Max)Rotten Tomatoes: One of the scenes that s going to really impress fans, I think, is one at the end, towards the end… but I don’t know are we allowed to talk about this in context at this point, or…Snyder: I don t know. You tell me.Rotten Tomatoes: Okay, so you bring together two iconic characters. You ve obviously dropped the hints of what s happening. As a fan and as somebody who s worked on this for a long time, what was it like to put them together and write that script and shoot something new for this film?Snyder: The scene was important to me because I felt like, if this is the last gasp of Zack Snyder s DC universe, which is fine –Rotten Tomatoes: It s more than a gasp. It s a booming shout!Snyder: The last “booming shout,” then, fair enough. I really wanted to say, I have a little bit of unfinished business and that is to bring these two characters together. And also I m a fan of, and very excited by, the Knightmare post-Darkseid world and love it. I have always loved the concept and was working my way here as best I could with these movies. It’s always fun to sort of dabble in that world – really fun to get to write and do a little scene setting.(Photo by HBO Max)Rotten Tomatoes: I want to talk to you about director s cuts in general and how important you feel it is for directors in your position to be able to get their vision out into the world. You ve had a few instances where you ve been able to give us alternative cuts and things, and there are rumors of other cuts of DC movies and other movies flying around. For you, who has a fandom that’s really interested in your vision, why is it important they get to see get to see a film as intended?I ve made director’s cuts of almost every movie I ve ever made, except for, I think, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole and Man of Steel. And I would argue that the Sucker Punch director s cut isn t really the full movie – that s the one movie I would say, Oh yeah, there s a cut of that movie that no one s ever seen. But otherwise… Watchmen director s cut, I prefer the BvS Ultimate Edition, which is the director’s cut; I prefer it because I just feel like it s less encumbered by the studio and by the notes and just by the constraints of what they think a movie has to be and its length. “Nobody wants to see a three-hour movie” – I don t agree with that a hundred percent. As far as other filmmakers go and their experience with director s cuts, I can t say exactly. It s personal to me, the way I ve dealt with it, it s a way I kind of justified making changes to the movies that I worked on – it’s knowing that I can always just release a director’s cut and at least these feel like, Okay, well, there s the real movie. (Photo by HBO Max)And I understand the balance between art and commerce – that you do have to strike a balance sometimes. The theatrical cut of Watchmen is based entirely on the maximum running length of film in IMAX. The film could be no longer than two hours and 20 minutes, or it would have fallen off the spool. That s where you see the sort of two things coming together, and you have to accept that if you want the movie that way [in IMAX]. And I did, so I m fine. My point is only that it is a business and so, “What will the market bear?” is a real question. Is it my hope that this movement might generate a little bit more power for some directors that are in a situation where they re not sure if they re going to get their movie completed? That d be great. But this is a very particular situation, I think, in that the breadcrumbs lead directly to a narrative that the fans were able to put together and turn into a rallying cry. It was a perfect storm of all those things. And the charities and their cause and the whole thing has a kind of blended reality that I think would be hard to duplicate. But would I hope that someone benefits from this? Absolutely, that would be great.Rotten Tomatoes: Finally, will you be going to Rotten Tomatoes when the reviews are posted?Snyder: I m only human.Zack Snyder s Justice League is available on HBO Max from Thursday, March 18, 2021.On an Apple device? ages for Film Independent) We all have those markers in our lives, whether that s a swimming lesson, or a bike riding lesson, or getting to college and meeting Barry Jenkins. “I first saw the film from start to finish as a rough cut screening that we had in Los Angeles months before we presented at Telluride. The swimming scene definitely stood out to me, almost like a marker within the entire narrative that kind of stuck with you, as these important moments do. I think we all have those in our lives, markers that we can all kind of recall as adults now that shape our journey on some level, whether that s a swimming lesson, or a bike riding lesson, or getting to college and meeting Barry Jenkins – or whatever these things are that find ways to change and alter your own personal narrative are wonderful. I feel very lucky, again, to have met Barry when I did.
