When he did finally debut in theaters, under the guidance of Sam Raimi, he not only kicked off one of the most successful superhero franchises ever, but also helped lay the groundwork for the massive paradigm shift in Hollywood that would eventually bring us the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe, for starters. Of course, Sony Pictures efforts to retain the rights to the character have famously resulted in two reboots and a parallel animated series, but the results overall have been rather spectacular. Raimi s original trilogy starring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, the MCU-related films with Tom Holland in the role, and the animated Into the Spider-Verse have all largely been critically acclaimed money-makers, and even the first of Andrew Garfield s two outings as the famous wallcrawler is generally well regarded. Spidey may be a late bloomer compared to his DC counterparts, but he s been the most consistent solo hero of them all.5. It’s the first ever director face-off in our Vs. series, and it’s an epic battle between two of the most influential filmmakers of our time – especially when it comes to action and sci-fi cinema. In the one corner you have Sir Ridley Scott, the man who gave us Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, and… The Counselor. (Mean, we know.) In the other corner is James Cameron, the man who gave us Aliens, The Terminator, Titanic, and… Piranha II: The Spawning. (Really.) Which director comes out on top when it comes to box office, Tomatometer and Audience Score, influence, and more? Rotten Tomatoes Contributing Editor Mark Ellis is crunching the numbers and making the big calls and, as ever, if you don’t agree with the verdict, let us know in the comments.Thumbnail images by Everett Collection and ©Fox 2000 courtesy Everett Collection

7.79.8 2月喜迎Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle (2018) 53% In 2016, Disney released a live action/CGI hybrid remake of The Jungle Book, a musical adventure based on the Rudyard Kipling book of the same name, and it was a runaway success. Even before that film went into production, however, Warner Bros. had already begun development on their own adaptation of Kipling s book, with Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Naomie Harris lending their voices to the animal characters and Andy Serkis, who voices Mowgli s bear friend Baloo, at the helm as director. The end result is Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, a decidedly darker take on the source material that follows a young boy raised by wolves who must decide whether to remain in the jungle or return to civilization. The film opens in a handful of theaters this week, with an eventual release on Netflix next Friday, and according to critics, its move to the streaming platform may have been a strategic one by Warner Bros. While Serkis passion for the project is clear and the A-list cast is reliably effective, critics say Mowgli suffers from comparisons to the Disney film, both in the quality of its special effects and in the consistency of its tone, and the final product is a messy if ambitious misfire.
This week s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news (the stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering stories for titles like Fast Furious 10, Hamilton, Knives Out, and Mission: Impossible 7.This WEEK S TOP STORYSAM RAIMI IN TALKS TO TAKE OVER DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS(Photo by ©Universal courtesy Everett Collection)When it was announced a few weeks ago that Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson had dropped out of directing the sequel, many different sites published lists of possible directors (we even ran a poll here on RT). In a surprise announcement, Marvel Studios is going with a director who wasn t widely considered to be a frontrunner, despite being one of the thematically best fits imaginable. That s because it is now Sam Raimi, the director of the first three Spider-Man movies (the ones starring Tobey Maguire), who is in talks with Marvel Studios to take over directing duties on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (5/7/2021). So, why exactly is Raimi such a good choice? First off, we should note that Spider-Man is one of two major characters co-created in the early 1960s by the team of Steve Ditko and Stan Lee; the other one is Doctor Strange. Secondly, Sam Raimi first made his mark in the 1980s with the Evil Dead movies, which share a few supernatural themes with Doctor Strange, including evil magic books, possessed inanimate objects, time travel, and teleportation. In related news, rumors continue to abound that Marvel Studios is currently looking to cast the interdimensional sorcereress Clea, Doctor Strange s long-time romantic interest.Other Top Headlines1. DISNEY TO BRING HAMILTON TO MOVIE THEATERS IN 2021(Photo by Nicholas Hunt/Getty Images)Every once in a while, there will be a big movie news story that is quickly misinterpreted online, partly because people tend run with headlines on social media without actually reading the full story. This week, the big story that falls in that category is the Hamilton movie that Disney is making for release in 2021, which is only half accurate, as the rest is a twisting of what Disney is actually doing. This week, Walt Disney Pictures did indeed announce a release date of October 15, 2021 for Hamilton, except that what it actually is will be a filmed presentation of the original stage musical featuring the original cast (including Lin-Manuel Miranda), filmed at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in Manhattan. The filming was actually done in 2016, before any of the original cast had departed, so that means the movie will come out five years after it was filmed. Disney reportedly paid million for the film rights to Hamilton, but reportedly, that could also include a true big-screen version of Hamilton (i.e., something more like Les Miserables, West Side Story, and In the Heights) that could be produced at a later date.2. VIN DIESEL HINTS THAT FAST FURIOUS X MIGHT ACTUALLY BE SPLIT IN TWO(Photo by Scott Garfield/Universal Pictures)It may have happened before, but when Warner Bros decided to split Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows into two parts, they arguably established a precedent for other franchises to get an extra movie out of their profitable franchises final entries (like The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, etc). This week, while talking up the big trailer debut for Fast Furious 9, Vin Diesel revealed that Universal Pictures may split Fast Furious 10 (Fast Furious X seems a more likely title since the franchise was originally almost titled Racer X back in 2001) into two parts. This is far from a confirmation at this point, but since Universal presumably wants to keep making these lucrative films for as long (and as often) as possible, Fast Furious getting an eleventh movie instead of just 10 seems pretty likely. Fast Furious 9 comes out this summer (5/22/2020), and Fast Furious 10 (or X) is scheduled for release next spring on April 2, 2021.3. KNIVES OUT SEQUEL IS OFFICIALLY IN THE WORKS(Photo by Claire Folger/©Lionsgate)Just a few weeks ago, writer-director Rian Johnson told the Hollywood Reporter that he was eager to get a sequel to his now Oscar-nominated (for Best Original Screenplay) whodunit Knives Out going and that he was already developing a new case for Benoit Blanc, the eccentric detective played by Daniel Craig, to crack. At the time, though, there wasn t any official confirmation that such a project was on the books for Lionsgate, even if it was something of a foregone conclusion. That all changed this week, when the studio officially announced in a conference call on Thursday that it was planning to start production on a Knives Out sequel, just as the first film is on the verge of breaking 0 million at the global box office. We don t yet know when the film is scheduled for release, nor do we have confirmation that any of the cast will be returning especially considering the new film will likely take audiences through a new mystery though it s a safe bet Daniel Craig will reprise his central role.4. BRUNO MARS TEAMING UP WITH DISNEY FOR HIS OWN MOVIE MUSICALTwo separate recent trends in movie musicals came together this week in one news story that combines elements of both. On one hand, we have seen some very decent box office numbers in the last couple of years for musical biopics like Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman, and on the other, Lin-Manuel Miranda has both In the Heights (6/26/2020) and the filmed version of Hamilton, which will be released by Walt Disney Pictures, coming soon (10/15/2021). After months of discussion, Walt Disney Pictures has finalized a deal with pop star Bruno Mars for a music-themed theatrical narrative feature that Mars will star in and produce. The premise is being kept secret for now, but we do know that the music will mostly be new original songs that Bruno Mars will write, create, and perform. An easy guess would be that it might be a musical inspired by his own life story, but that s not confirmed.5. ICE CUBE JOINS FEMALE BOXING BIOPIC FLINT STRONG(Photo by Bob Mahoney/©Warner Bros.)Last summer (6/15/2019), rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube celebrated his 50th birthday, and unlike some other Gen X actors, he seems to be leaning comfortably into the transition from being a young star (the Friday franchise, for example) to taking roles that are more age-appropriate (like say, his roles in Lottery Ticket, which was 10 years ago, and the 21 Jump Street movies). Ice Cube has signed on with Universal Pictures to co-star in their boxing biopic Flint Strong as Jason Crutchfield, the real life coach of future Olympic boxing champion Claressa T-Rex Shields. The movie will basically be adapting the same story as the 2015 documentary T-Rex, except that Ryan Destiny will be portraying Claressa Shields (rather than Shields playing herself). Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Rachel Morrison (Mudbound) will be making her feature film directorial debut with Flint Strong, working from a screenplay by Barry Jenkins (the director of Moonlight).6. ARE YOU THERE, HOLLYWOOD? IT S ME, MARGARET(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)As frequently as Hollywood adapts classic novels into films, you might think that all of the biggest titles had already gotten the big screen treatment, but some (like, say, Catcher in the Rye) defy adaptation and remain unproduced. The argument can be made that one of the most famous young-adult fiction classics that fits in that category is Judy Blume s Are You There, God? It s Me, Margaret (which turns 50 this year). Without getting too far into the details, Blume s novel depicted a young lady struggling to understand the changes her body was going through, and what exactly she was expected to do about them. Now, over 50 years after it was first published, Are You There, God? It s Me, Margaret is now being developed by James L. Brooks and writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig (The Edge of Seventeen, Certified Fresh at 94%). The screenplay, which has reportedly received Judy Blume s endorsement, has been sent to various studios, and a bidding war is expected to start soon.7. DOWNTON ABBEY SHOWRUNNER ADAPTING THE WIND IN THE WILLOWSThe 1906 Kenneth Grahame children s novel The Wind in the Willows was adapted by Walt Disney Pictures in 1949 as one half of The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (Fresh at 93%), but the argument can be made that, unlike most other classic stories adapted by Disney in that era, that adaptation is not as fondly remembered as, say, Bambi or Pinocchio. There have been other attempts at adapting The Wind in the Willows over the years (including an animated movie featuring Monty Python stars), but so far, that one great definitive version hasn t happened yet. We can now report that Downton Abbey showrunner and writer Julian Fellowes has signed on to adapt The Wind in the Willows for a feature film that will be shot at Peter Jackson s production studio in New Zealand, with Jackson s WETA Digital doing the CGI work on the animal characters like Mole, Rat, Toad, and Badger. Fellowes also previously worked on a stage musical adaptation of The Wind in the Willows, which debuted on London s West End in 2016.8. SPIKE LEE TO ADAPT MUSICAL DAVID BYRNE S AMERICAN UTOPIA(Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)Spike Lee s BlacKkKlansman was one of the top contenders at last year s Academy Awards, and he s currently in the midst of production on his next film, the post-Vietnam War drama Da 5 Bloods, which will probably be released this year in time for awards consideration. It was a bit of a surprise, therefore, that a new project emerged this week which is also being planned for a 2020 release. Spike Lee has signed on to direct a feature film adaptation of the Broadway musical David Byrne s American Utopia. David Byrne (the former lead singer of the Talking Heads) and 11 other musicians are featured in the show, performing songs from Byrne s 2018 album called American Utopia, as well songs from his career with the Talking Heads. This film is being compared by one of the producers to the 1984 concert film Stop Making Sense, which also featured the Talking Heads and international musicians.9. PROMETEHUS AND IT FEMALE LEADS JOIN PETER DINKLAGE S THRILLER THE THICKET(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)Every year, there is a bit of a one-two punch in the field of independent film deals, as the Sundance Film Festival in late January is very quickly followed by the European Film Market at the Berlin Film Festival in early February. So, even as we re still covering the deals that came out of Sundance, we re also already hearing about big new announcements from Berlin. One of the movies that is looking to be sold at Berlin this year is a thriller called The Thicket, based upon a novel by Joe R. Lansdale, the mind behind Bubba Ho-Tep (Certified Fresh at 78%). Peter Dinklage has been attached to star for a while as one of his first post-Game of Thrones projects, and this week, we learned about three of his co-stars. Noomi Rapace (Prometheus), Sophia Lillis (IT), and Charlie Plummer (All the Money in the World) have all joined the cast of The Thicket. Dinklage will play a bounty hunter who is recruited by a young man (Plummer) seeking to rescue his sister (Lillis) from a violent killer named Cut Throat Bill (Rapace). The Thicket will have the same cinematographer (Galo Olivares) as last year s Best Picture nominee Roma.Like this? (Photo by New Line/courtesy Everett Collection)All Guillermo del Toro Movies Ranked by TomatometerOne easy way to get that Best Picture win at the Oscars? Spend your burgeoning directing career on strange and grotesque genre pictures, then hook up with a major studio to work on Lord of the Rings, with hundreds of millions of dollars in budget. Obviously! It worked for Peter Jackson, whose Dead Alive and Meet the Feebles movies did little to suggest he would one day get the gold trophy for The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. And it worked for Guillermo del Toro, whose success with cult cinema fanatics led him to toil for years on The Hobbit movies. Del Toro didn t win anything for those movies hell, he didn t even end up directing them. But he did get the top prize for The Shape of Water, an unlikely win for the unlikeliest of love stories, which currently puts a lovely bow on a career characterized by dark fantasy, big sci-fi, and creature features, of visions where the lines between dream and nightmare blur.Del Toro got his start in his native Mexico in the early 90s with the mythological Cronos, featuring Ron Perlman in the first of several collaborations. As with many international filmmakers with a hit on their hands, del Toro was wooed to Hollywood to do exactly his thing except, of course, with tons of studio interference, notes, and meddling. The result was the compromised Mimic, whose lackluster reception was enough to get del Toro to go back abroad for his next film. The Spain set-and-shot The Devil s Backbone was another cult hit, again enough for him to get tempted back to the States. What followed was Blade II and Hellboy, which gave the pre-Marvel Cinematic Universe era of comic book movies an unpredictable shot in the arm. The latter film reunited him with Perlman, along with physical artist Doug Jones, who he first worked with on Mimic and would be crucial on his journey towards The Shape of Water.2005 s Pan s Labyrinth was a cross-cultural phenomenon, a grim fantasy and political commentary that s still heavily watched today. Then 2008 s Hellboy II: The Golden Army had the unfortunate luck of being released a week before The Dark Knight. It took del Toro five years to return with the mech brawler Pacific Rim, which was followed by the Gothic ghost love story Crimson Peak. And then we come to The Shape of Water, his tender ode to Creature from the Black Lagoon.Del Toro is currently prepping noir-thriller Nightmare Alley for a December 2021 release. Now, we re ranking all Guillermo del Toro movies by Tomatometer!
ot new adaptation for another prestige network in today s edition of TV Talk.TOP STORYAHS GETS A FITTING RENEWAL (Photo by FX)Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk s hit anthology series American Horror Story has been renewed through season 13, FX announced. The announcement keeps the Emmy-winning campy fright fest on the network for (at least) three more seasons following the previously-ordered season 10 set to air later this year. Somehow it just feels really poetic to me that American Horror Story will have 13 seasons, Landgraf chuckled.Still, he said that Murphy hasn t revealed any details on what the themes for these new seasons will be.“It s like an annual ritual for him,” Landgraf said of Murphy, adding that he loves the act of imagination and creating something new, starting from the ground up with a concept, production design, casting, makeup hair costume. Every year, he probably has a bucket of possibilities. But every year, he kind of figures out what he’s obsessed with this year, what he thinks is relevant. Sometimes it’s classic. Sometimes it’s more responding to the moment. And then, he surprises me by telling me what it’s going to be. IMPEACHMENT DELAY(Photo by Dimitrios Kambouris/Getty Images for TIME)Despite the good news about AHS, Landgraf said that there will be some lag time with another project from Murphy (pictured) and his producing partners. American Crime Story: Impeachment, the latest chapter in the Emmy-winning anthology series based on true events, was supposed to premiere on September 27.Landgraf said that this is now infeasible for the drama, which tells the story of the Bill Clinton impeachment trial with Beanie Feldstein as Monica Lewinsky and Clive Owen as the embattled president — not because of the backlash the network faced over its intention to premiere right before the 2020 election, but because Murphy is currently filming a movie, and production won t start on Impeachment until March.“The factor determining that [hold up] is Ryan’s availability,” Landgraf said. “The fact that we won’t be done by September is determined by his availability.”Premiere Dates BonanzaIf it sweetens the blow, FX did announce premiere dates for many of its new and returning shows.Perhaps filling the ACS void is Mrs. America, a new limited series starting April 15 in which a star-studded cast depicts the women s rights movement of the last century. Cate Blanchett stars as Phyllis Schlafly, Rose Byrne is Gloria Steinem, and Uzo Aduba appears as Shirley Chisholm.New comedies Breeders and Dave premiere March 2 and March 4, respectively, while tech thriller Devs starts March 5 (more on that below). All four episodes of new docu-series The Most Dangerous Animal of All premiere March 6.The fourth and final season of Pamela Adlon s lauded dramedy Better Things starts March 5, as does the second season of weekly comedy showcase Cake. The second season of vampire mockumentary series What We Do in the Shadows starts April 15. The fourth installment of anthology series Fargo starts April 19, and season 11 of Archer starts May 6.ATLANTA SEASONS 3 AND 4 EXPECTED IN 2021(Photo by Matthias Clamer/FX)The new season of FX dramedy Atlanta is long delayed because creator Donald Glover has been busy with other projects. Landgraf said that, instead of one long season, the next 16 episodes of Atlanta will be broken up into two seasons. One is intended to premiere in early 2021 while the other will hit later that year.“They’re going to shoot them all in sequence, Landgraf said, while teasing that a good chunk of it shoots outside the United States. PARASITE SERIES HEADS TO HBO(Photo by NEON)In other TV news, Parasite writer-director Bong Joon Ho has partnered with Adam McKay on a television adaptation of his Korean-language awards hit for HBO, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It is unclear if the limited series will be some sort of follow-up to the movie or an English-language remake, THR reported.NO MORE DEVS IN DEVELOPMENTCreator Alex Garland s eagerly anticipated technology-centered thriller stars Sonoya Mizuno as a computer programmer investigating her boyfriend s mysterious disappearance. To complicate matters, they both work for a computing company run by Nick Offerman s well-whiskered and powerful Forest. But don t get too obsessed with the series. Landgraf said that, while he d be dancing an Irish jig for more of Devs, right now the plan is for it to be an actual limited series of eight episodes.A Y BY ANY OTHER NAME?(Photo by Macall Polay/FX)FX s adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra s comic-book series Y: The Last Man has gone through plenty of behind-the-scenes drama. Eliza Clark took over as showrunner from Michael Green and Aïda Mashaka Croal last year and Landgraf says he s seen five to six episodes.Even though the title Y doesn t make for good online searching, FX plans to keep it. It’s informally called Y, but we haven’t gone through the process of figuring out marketing it, Landgraf said.Like this? 亚博旗下正规的投注平台 This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Tenet, and Tom Cruise s Space Project. This WEEK S TOP STORYSONIC THE HEDGEHOG (AND PROBABLY TAILS, TOO) TO RETURN IN 2022(Photo by Paramount Pictures)We may have had to wait a few more months (from 11/15/2019 to 2/14/2020) for the character design to be redone on Sonic the Hedgehog (Fresh at 63%), but Paramount is apparently attempting to avoid too much of a wait for Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The studio has announced a release date of April 8, 2020 for the sequel, or just two years and two months after the first film, and that s even after they already factored in the various delays right now because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The sequel does not have a premise yet, but the ending of Sonic the Hedgehog teased both the debut of Tails the fox, but also the villainous return of Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik (now looking even more like his video game character). Director Jeff Fowler will return for the sequel, working from a screenplay by Pat Casey and Josh Miller, who also both worked on the first film. Ben Schwartz is also expected to return as the voice of Sonic, and he may also again be joined by James Marsden and Tika Sumpter (though neither is confirmed yet). Release dates are obviously changing all the time, but other movies scheduled within a month of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 include Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (3/25/2022), The Matrix 4 (4/1/2022), and Black Panther II (5/6/2022).Other Top Headlines1. PIXAR TRAVELS TO ITALY IN 2021 FOR THE SEA MONSTER ADVENTURE LUCA (Photo by Disney/Pixar)Movie studios are increasingly planting untitled films on the release calendar these days, especially when the title in question is a new property and not a sequel, prequel, or remake. So, we ve actually known for a while that Disney and Pixar were planning on releasing something next summer on June 18, 2021; we just didn t know anything else beyond that. Normally, Disney and Pixar might have made a big announcement at San Diego Comic-Con, but that, of course, ended up being replaced by last week s Comic-Con@Home, which had some big panels, but not as many as usual. Instead, we learned through other means (in this case, Collider) that Pixar s next movie after Soul (11/20/2020) will be a fantasy adventure set in Italy called Luca. We also have this fairly lengthy premise: Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, the original animated feature is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: he is a sea monster from another world just below the water’s surface. Some writers are already comparing Luca to both Call Me By Your Name (thanks to the setting) and Guillermo del Toro s The Shape of Water.2. JORDAN PEELE TEAMS UP WITH ISSA RAE FOR SCI-FI HORROR SINKHOLE (Photo by Priscilla Grant, MJP/Everett Collection)Ever since his breakout success in 2017 with Get Out (Certified Fresh at 98%), Jordan Peele has worn several hats (director, producer, and host) on a variety of horror, thriller, or related genre movies and shows, including Us (Certified Fresh at 93%), CBS All Access s The Twilight Zone, HBO s upcoming series Lovecraft Country, and this fall s reboot of Candyman. We can now add another project to his upcoming filmography, as he will be producing a sci-fi horror film for Universal Pictures called Sinkhole, in which Issa Rae (The Lovebirds, HBO s Insecure) will star. The premise revolves around a strange pit that appears in the backyard of what otherwise seems like a perfect home, with the added information that the original short story started as a writers group project with the theme, I married a monster, and that the story will explore themes of female identity and perfection. 3. AMY ADAMS BIZARRE WERE-DOG DRAMA NIGHTBITCH (Photo by Jef Hernandez/Everett Collection)Plenty of werewolf movies have been made since the 1920s, and along the way, the concept has certainly veered into comedy, such as with Jon Landis An American Werewolf in London, Michael J. Fox s Teen Wolf, and, one could reasonably argue, with Disney s Shaggy D.A. franchise. Now, werewolves are frequently men, but Amy Adams is now attached to star in a film called Nightbitch which will team her up with the Annapurna production company, with which she has worked four times before (The Master, American Hustle, Her, and Vice). Nightbitch, which is not technically a werewolf movie, will star Adams as a former artist who is thrust into stay-at-home domesticity after the birth of her son, who becomes increasingly worried that she may be turning into a dog. (Some versions of this story suggest it is actually the baby that is turning into a dog, but the official premise of the source novel, which comes out next summer, is pretty clear.)4. CHRISTOPHER NOLAN S TENET CHANGES RELEASE STRATEGY AGAIN(Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/©Warner Bros.)As the COVID-19 pandemic continues in the USA, movie theaters remain unsure about when they will be able to fully reopen. Last Friday, we heard that Warner Bros. was considering opening Tenet internationally first and then in the United States at a later point. That plan was confirmed on Monday when the studio released a press release that the film will be released in over 70 countries on August 26, 2020 before opening in the United States a week later, just in time for Labor Day weekend, but only in select cities. What s unclear is whether that Labor Day release will also then lead to a wider release for Tenet, or if it will end up adding something like a VOD release in lieu of a wide release (which may not be fully possible in September if not enough theaters are open in the USA by then). Of course, this also means that American movie fans will have to endure at least a week of possible social media spoilers during which the rest of the world understands exactly what Tenet is about.5. TOM CRUISE S SPACE PROJECT GETS 0 MILLION BUDGET AND MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE HELP (Photo by ©Universal Pictures)It probably was inevitable that someone would eventually want to make a big budget movie in outer space, but the when felt further away until recently. And if any movie star was going to attempt it (and do most of his own stunts), it was also probably obvious that it would be Tom Cruise. Just two months after we first found out about Cruise s plans to film a movie in outer space, the news broke this week that a deal has been made with Universal Pictures to fund the project with an atmospheric budget of over 0 million. It had already been known that the film will be directed by Doug Liman (who worked with Cruise on Edge of Tomorrow, Certified Fresh at 91%), but another name that has joined the production is Christopher McQuarrie, Tom Cruise s recent Mission: Impossible director (who s preparing to film movies #7 and #8 soon). McQuarrie will serve as one of the film s producers, and also contribute story ideas (a credit just shy of actually writing the screenplay). In related news, Top Gun: Maverick recently became just one of the many movies to have its 2020 release date delayed until next year (7/2/2021), which is almost two years after its original release date (July 12, 2019).6. BUZZFEED GETTING INTO MOVIES #14 WILL SURPRISE YOU!(Photo by Nicholas Kamm/Getty Images)In the 2000s, the popular news satire website The Onion announced that they would be getting into the movie business, but all we got was the little-seen 2008 project The Onion Movie. In that same spirit, Buzzfeed is now apparently hoping to have better success with a cinematic endeavor, as they are now partnering with Lionsgate for a theatrical film slate. Although we haven t gotten any specific examples of what a Buzzfeed movie might be exactly (documentary? drama? comedy? collection of cat videos?), the press release did say that the movies will be aimed at millennial and Gen Z audiences, so if you re over the age of 40 or so, these movies apparently won t be for you. Lionsgate and Buzzfeed expect to launch their first co-production sometime in 2021.7. COURTENEY COX WILL BE THERE FOR YOU (AGAIN), SCREAM 5 FANS(Photo by Dimension Films courtesy Everett Collection)When Neve Campbell was first announced in May to be in talks to return to the Scream franchise for Scream 5, this column predicted that we would soon hear about a few other returning cast members as well. That hunch was confirmed soon after with the news that David Arquette was returning as Deputy Dewey Riley, but it took another two months for Courteney Cox to be announced as returning as Gale Weathers. Scream 5 will be directed by the team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (A.K.A. Radio Silence), who are currently best known for last summer s horror comedy Ready or Not (Certified Fresh at 88%). So far, no new cast members have been announced, but presumably, that will soon change, and at this point, it s all but expected that Neve Campbell s return will be officially announced in the near future.8. SETH ROGEN PRODUCING PROJECT ABOUT SECRET HOLLYWOOD HUSTLER (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)It s not uncommon for directors, writers, or actors who first became famous for broad comedies to stretch out into more serious films. Recent examples of this include: Adam McKay (who went from Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy to The Big Short); Jay Roach (from Austin Powers to Recount and Game Change); and Peter Farrelly (from Dumb and Dumber to Green Book). Someone else who appears to be heading down a similar track is Seth Rogen, who is obviously best known for stoner comedies like Knocked Up, Pineapple Express, and This is the End. Rogen and his producing partner Evan Goldberg are partnering with director Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name) for an adaptation of the 2017 documentary Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood (Certified Fresh at 86%). Guadagnino will direct the adaptation about the life of Scotty Bowers, a former U.S. Marine who had a second career during the golden age of Hollywood as a pimp and hustler for many within the secret world of the studios and actors, frequently using a Hollywood gas station as a cover location. Details of Scotty Bowers life also inspired the Netflix series Hollywood. It s not yet known who will star in this film, but one has to guess that two possible candidates might be Channing Tatum (a friend of Seth Rogen) or Armie Hammer (who starred in Guadagnino s Call Me By Your Name).9. FAMOUS ACTORS TO PERFORM INTO THEIR SMART PHONES FOR WITHIN/IN (Photo by NurPhoto/Getty Images)Before 2020, most of us had presumably gotten pretty used to slick filmmaking and TV production styles, and then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and many TV shows essentially became very well publicized Zoom calls. It was probably inevitable, therefore, that there would eventually be a movie that was filmed in that style. Although Michael Bay is also producing a pandemic thriller called Songbird that may also look like it was filmed by the actors, the movie that sounds closest to that theme is called Within/In. The project is described as a made-at-home anthology film revolving around themes of confinement and isolation. Within/In will feature several established actors, including Julianne Moore, Don Cheadle, Chris Cooper, Rebecca Hall, Sanaa Lathan, Emily Mortimer, Alessandro Nivola, Rosie Perez, and Debra Winger. Since it s an anthology film, we can expect there to be several individual stories, but since it s also made at home, most of the actors also won t appear onscreen together (at least not physically). Many of the actors (including Chris Cooper and Griffin Dunne) will also be taking directing credits as they re basically directing themselves.

I m sure if you make a film in France, it will be successful. I think his words really stayed with me and really helped to persuade me. Right before filming, I met with him to tell him that I was working with [Catherine] Deneuve, and he said, Everyone says that she s so difficult, but honestly, she s the kind of actress who really wants to serve the entire film. So you ll be fine. It was very persuasive and reassuring to have him talk to me that way.RT: On that note, it seems clear how Juliette Binoche became involved with the project, being that she met with you early on, and I read that you were eager to meet with Ethan Hawke for his part right after you won the Palme d Or last year for Shoplifters. But what was the process like for casting Catherine Deneuve?Koreeda: Let s see, I had the idea suddenly in 2015 on my way back from France to Japan on an Air France flight. I had written a Japanese play for an aging Japanese actress, and it suddenly occurred to me to completely rewrite it and set it in France. And I thought, Well, if Deneuve is the aging actress, Binoche is her daughter and Ethan Hawke is Binoche s husband. That s how I start my diary entry for that day. It happened in a flash on an Air France flight. And then I had, I would say, about a total of six hours of lengthy interviews with Deneuve, and then I processed all of that, what I got from her, into strengthening and developing her character in the script. But about half of those six hours was her talking about restaurants and movies. The Truth is in select theaters and available on VOD on July 3, 2020.Thumbnail image: Everett Collection, Focus Features, Cinema Service
Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering titles such as Candyman, Pinocchio, Spider-Women, and Venom 2.This WEEK S TOP STORYGUILLERMO DEL TORO REVEALS OVER 15 MOVIES READY TO GO(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Long before Guillermo del Toro won the Best Picture Oscar this year for The Shape of Water, it was well known that he had a long list of shelved movies in his past. That little golden man on his mantle has changed a lot for GDT, including his new deal at Fox Searchlight that basically set him up with his own mini-studio for horror/genre films. This week, Guillermo del Toro took to Twitter to list over 15 unproduced screenplays that he has completely finished, which are basically ready to go projects for any studio that wants to work with him on them. The most common theme to the list is remakes, including The Count of Monte Cristo, Fantastic Voyage, The Haunted Mansion (which is Disney s), Nightmare Alley, The Witches, and Beauty and the Beast (with Emma Watson, who eventually starred in Disney s remake instead). There s also the spooky DC Comics super team Justice League Dark (featuring Constantine and Swamp Thing), adaptations of the novels Drood and List of 7, and H.P. Lovecraft s At the Mountains of Madness (which infamously almost got made with Tom Cruise, at one point). Other intriguing titles include The Buried Giant, The Coffin, Mephisto s Bridge, and Superstitious. One of them is just called Secret Project (Untitled), which might be especially interesting since, at one point, The Shape of Water was also basically known as Secret Project (Untitled). Probably the least likely of these projects to ever actually happen are Pacific Rim 2 (since it was replaced by Pacific Rim: Uprising) and a pilot episode for a once-planned Hulk TV show reboot. So, will any studios now step up to any of these?Fresh Developments1. SPIDER-VERSE SEQUEL AND SPINOFF ALREADY PLANNED(Photo by Sony Pictures)Sony s animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is still two weeks away from release, but it also already has a 100% Tomatometer from 49 reviews to date. That has to be part of the reason that Sony has announced early development has started on both a direct sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and a spinoff focusing on Spider-Women. That spinoff will focus on three generations of female superheroes with spider powers, with Spider-Gwen from the first movie likely to be one of the three. Other possibilities might include Jessica Drew (the original Spider-Woman), Madame Web, Arachne, Araña, and Spider-Girl. (To make things confusing, there have been three Spider-Women, two Madame Webs, and two Spider-Girls.) These two animated films join a growing slate of Marvel movies at Sony that also includes Venom 2, Morbius (AKA The Living Vampire), Black Cat, Silver Sable, Kraven the Hunter, Jackpot, Nightwatch, and Silk.2. TOM HANKS MAY PLAY GEPPETTO IN DISNEY S PINOCCHIO REMAKE (Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/Walt Disney Studios)2019 is going to be a big year for Disney s remakes of their animated features, with Dumbo (3/29/19), Aladdin (5/24/19), and The Lion King (7/19/19) all scheduled for release. Then, in 2020, we re also going to get Mulan (3/27/20), Maleficent II (5/29/20), and possibly another (Disney has a few untitled movies on their 2020 schedule right now). The studio shows no signs of slowing down, and this week, we received our first casting news for their Pinocchio remake. Toy Story and Saving Mr. Banks star Tom Hanks is now in talks with Disney to play the toymaker Geppetto for director Paul King, whose Paddington 2 is still Certified Fresh at an impressive 100% on the Tomatometer. In related news, Tim Allen (AKA Buzz Lightyear) recently revealed another new detail about next year s Toy Story 4 (6/21/19) while on The Tonight Show, disclosing that Keanu Reeves will be joining the Toy Story franchise as a character that sounds too much like Buzz Lightyear. The other major sequel that Keanu Reeves has coming out next year is John Wick: Chapter 3 (5/3/2019).3. RITA MORENO RETURNING IN SPIELBERG S REMAKE OF WEST SIDE STORYWhen filmmakers remake or sequelize classic films, they frequently cast one of the original stars (Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins Returns is a perfect example of that). For his remake of the 10-time Academy Award-winning 1961 musical West Side Story, Steven Spielberg is following suit. EGOT winner Rita Moreno played Anita in the original West Side Story, and she is now set to co-star in Spielberg s remake of the film. Moreno s character will be named Valentina, a reimagined version of the corner store owner named Doc (played in the original film by Ned Glass). Moreno is the second new cast member following the casting of Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) last month as Tony. It is not yet known if Twin Peaks co-stars (and the original s two male leads) Richard Beymer and Russ Tamblyn will also be cast in the West Side Story remake (Natalie Wood, who played Maria in the original, died in 1981).4. JORDAN PEELE PRODUCING CANDYMAN REMAKE FOR 2020 (Photo by TriStar Pictures)In September, we first heard that Get Out director Jordan Peele was producing a remake of the 1992 horror film Candyman. Just two months later, the Candyman remake already has a director, a studio, and a release date. MGM has kind of made remakes their thing, with recent films like Ben-Hur, The Magnificent Seven, Death Wish, Tomb Raider, Overboard, and A Star is Born. The Candyman remake will be directed by Nia DaCosta, who made her debut with the indie modern Western Little Woods (currently Fresh at 100%). MGM and Universal Pictures have scheduled Candyman for release on June 12, 2020, which puts it a week after Wonder Woman 1984 and the week before a secret Pixar/Disney film.5. DC COMICS MOVES FORWARD WITH BLUE BEETLE SOLO MOVIE(Photo by DC Comics)Since 1939, there have been three iterations of the DC Comics superhero called Blue Beetle, starting with this one, after which, for the longest run, there was Justice League member Ted Kord (best known, probably, for teaming up with Booster Gold). The first Blue Beetle was sort of like Shazam, and the second was similar in some ways to Batman, but starting in 2006, the third Blue Beetle had a symbiote that makes him sort of like Venom. That Blue Beetle is a young hero named Jaime Reyes, and this week, Warner Bros revealed their plans to make Blue Beetle the first stand-alone title to feature a Latino lead. (It should be noted that the star of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is Miles Morales, whose mom is Puerto Rican.) Blue Beetle will be written by Mexican-born screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who also wrote the upcoming remake of Scarface.6. VIOLA DAVIS BRINGING THE FIGHTING SHIRLEY CHISHOLM TO AMAZON (AND THEATERS) Although Netflix is probably the most prolific streaming service, it was actually Amazon Studios that made history in 2017 when Manchester by the Sea made it the first streaming service to be nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award. Earlier this week, the news broke that Viola Davis JuVee Productions had set up a new deal at Amazon Studios, and just three days later, we learned what their first project will be. Confirming Amazon s continued interest in producing the sorts of films that can compete for major awards, Davis has set up the political biopic The Fighting Shirley Chisholm. In 1972, U.S. Representative Shirley Chisholm made history twice as both the first African American (of either major party) and the first female Democrat to become an official candidate for President of the United States. The Fighting Shirley Chisholm will be directed by Maggie Betts (Novitiate), working from a screenplay by Adam Countee (of TV s Community, Silicon Valley, and The Mindy Project).7. DONALD GLOVER, RIHANNA, AND LETITIA WRIGHT HEADED FOR GUAVA ISLAND(Photo by Guy D'Alema/FX)This week, the first teaser trailer for next summer s The Lion King remake broke records for Disney, but the movie s star, Donald Glover, is also working on another movie for 2019 as well. Glover (a.k.a. Childish Gambino), Rihanna, and Letitia Wright (Shuri from Black Panther) reportedly went to Cuba this August to film a secret movie that was revealed this week to be called Guava Island. The first teaser trailer doesn t really reveal anything else about the project, except that it s a Childish Gambino movie directed by frequent Glover collaborator Hiro Murai, who also directed episodes of Atlanta and several Childish Gambino music videos, including This is America.8. KINGSMAN PREQUEL ATTRACTS IMPRESSIVE CAST(Photo by Giles Keyte/20th Century Fox Film Corp.)When Kingsman: The Secret Service was released in 2015, it was Certified Fresh at 75% on the Tomatometer. Last year s sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, however, did considerably poorer, scoring just 52%. With that in mind, we re tempted to call this week s news Rotten, except that it s, well, kind of cool. First, it s sounding like there will actually be two Kingsman movies filming in 2019: a prequel and a proper Kingsman 3. The prequel is the one that sparked the biggest headlines, as director Matthew Vaughn has reportedly cast (or is negotiating to cast) Daniel Brühl (Captain America: Civil War), Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister from Game of Thrones), Rhys Ifans (The Amazing Spider-Man), and Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort from the Harry Potter franchise). The Kingsman prequel will reportedly be a period drama about the actual tailor shop that serves as a front for the secret British spy agency.
