Though Kennedy spent most of her time talking about Star Wars’s place on Disney+, she did offer some updates on the feature film slate. Taika Waititi is still working on the script to his Star Wars film. “Taika’s approach to Star Wars will be fresh, unexpected, and … unique,” Kennedy said. “His enormous talent and sense of humor will ensure that audiences are in for an unforgettable ride.”pic.twitter.com/e3N00xCr5i Patty Jenkins (@PattyJenks) December 10, 2020But Kennedy surprised everyone by announcing Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins would direct the next Star Wars feature, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. Set in a what Kennedy called a “future era of Star Wars,” it will tell the tale of the famed X-Wing fighter squadron. In a video Jenkins posted to her own Twitter account, she said the project takes inspiration from her father, a US fighter pilot who lost his life in service to the country. “It ignited a desire to turn all that tragedy and thrill into the greatest fighter pilot film of all time,” she explained. It is slated for release in December of 2023.Curiously, though, no mention was made of the film trilogy Rian Johnson is reportedly developing for Lucasfilm. Some Non Star Wars News from the Land of Lucas: Willow, Indy, and an Original(Photo by © Lucasfilm)Beyond Star Wars, Lucasfilm is also working on a handful of interesting projects.First, there is the Willow television series. Spearheaded by Solo: A Star Wars Story s Jonathan Kasdan and Arrow s Wendy Mericle, it will follow a new generation of heroes and a returning Willow Ufgood (Warwick Davis) on quest to save the realm. According to unconfirmed reports, Ellie Bamber, Cailee Spaeny, and Erin Kellyman will lead the series as that younger generation of adventurers. Crazy Rich Asians’ Jon Chu will direct the pilot.Kennedy also confirmed the upcoming Indiana Jones film will be the last. Harrison Ford returns once last time as Dr. Henry Jones Jr. But in a series first, Steven Spielberg will hand the director duties off to Logan’s James Mangold. The choice of director also reflects the sense of finality developing around the project. But perhaps most exciting project touted is Lucasfilm’s first new concept in decades: the company intends to adapt City of Blood Bone by Tomi Adeyemi for the big screen. The story centers on a young African girl’s quest to restore magic to her forsaken people. While Lucasfilm will always be the Star Wars company, it is refreshing to see them look to new ideas. 20th Century Studios will act as a producing partner on the project.Lucasfilm s plans presented by Kennedy suggest a robust future for Star Wars and a big turnaround from the original intention to produce a new Star Wars film every year. Surprisingly, the streaming universe seems a better fit, although, we cannot wait until it is safe to see a Patty Jenkins X-Wing movie in a theater. Nonetheless, it is hard to ignore the hard shift to Star Wars as a home entertainment brand. Of course, we imagine generations of fans clutching their action figures and DVDs will find little to complain about in this expanded, streaming Star Wars future.January 2021 Update: This report was updated to clarify that The Mandalorian season 3 is not expected in 2021. Best-Reviewed Musicals/Music Movies 2018Hollywood may not produce as many traditional musicals as it once did, but that doesn t mean films largely driven by music aren t still being made, especially when you consider this year s best-reviewed films in the category. Bradley Cooper s acclaimed remake of A Star Is Born had folks talking awards from the moment it premiered, and it leads the pack here. The order of the rank below reflects the Adjusted Score as of December 31, 2018. 1.13.4 0月喜迎2. ANDY SERKIS CONFIRMED AS DIRECTOR OF NEXT YEAR S VENOM SEQUEL It was just last week that The Weekly Ketchup reported that Andy Serkis was among the directors in the running for the sequel to Venom, based on the popular Marvel Comics anti-hero. Given that Sony Pictures has scheduled Venom 2 for release next year (10/2/2020), it probably shouldn t be surprising that the studio indeed moved quickly this week to lock in Andy Serkis as the sequel s director. Serkis has also previously co-starred as the villain Klaw (spelled Klaue in the movies) in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Black Panther, and it s not yet known whether he will also be taking a role in Venom 2. Serkis made his directorial debut in 2017 with Breathe, and also directed last year s Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle. Although Kelly Marcel (Fifty Shades of Grey) is currently credited as the writer of the Venom sequel, Serkis was quoted this week as saying that the film s star, Tom Hardy, is very involved with the writing with Kelly Marcel of the new story. As revealed by the mid-credits bumper in Venom, Woody Harrelson is expected to be the big bad in Venom 2 as the symbiote-powered serial killer Carnage.3. GEMMA CHAN MAY REPRISE HER CAPTAIN MARVEL ROLE IN MARVEL S THE ETERNALS (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection) Ever since Marvel Studios second film, The Incredible Hulk, included Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been built on the inclusion in (almost) every film of elements from other movies in the franchise. Until this week, the only apparent connections that next year s The Eternals had to previous films was that Knowhere (from Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Infinity War) was built out of the skull of one of the Celestials, and that Peter Quill s father (Kurt Russell as Ego in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) was himself a Celestial, one of which is expected to be the threat in The Eternals. Another possible connection was revealed this week with the news that Gemma Chan is now in talks with Marvel to co-star in The Eternals. Her role hasn t been confirmed yet, but Gemma Chan also played the Kree warrior Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel (other actors have played multiple roles, but it s relatively rare). Irish actor Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk) is also reportedly up for an unknown role in The Eternals, which is scheduled for release on November 6, 2020.4. DISNEY CEO CONFIRMS PLANET OF THE APES REMAINS A TOP PRIORITY FRANCHISE (Photo by © 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)As Disney was putting the finishing touches on acquiring the 20th Century Fox film properties, the focus from most writers (and rightly so, arguably) was on properties like Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Avatar, but the Fox catalog also includes Alien, Die Hard, Ice Age, and Kingsman. One of the other properties that Fox has had success with since 2011 was the rebooted Planet of the Apes, which as a trilogy had a domestic tally of 2 million (and a worldwide total of over .68 billion). Given those numbers, this week s news is probably a non-story, but it s still interesting. While talking about Disney s future plans for their Fox properties this week, CEO Bob Iger for the first time specifically mentioned Planet of the Apes as a priority franchise for the studio. Unfortunately, this news also needs to be phrased in correlation to the rest of Fox s development slate, which is reportedly being flushed to focus on bigger, higher profile titles and less on mid-range movies like this week s The Art of Racing in the Rain.5. IDRIS ELBA AND LUCAS FROM STRANGER THINGS SADDLE UP AS CONCRETE COWBOYS (Photo by Michael Gibson/STX Entertainment)Now that Fast Furious Presents: Hobbs Shaw is in theaters, and his work on Cats is complete, Idris Elba is ready for his next film. Until this week, that was expected to be The Suicide Squad, which starts filming in September, but instead, Elba is also squeezing in a smaller film in this summer. That movie is called Concrete Cowboys, and it will tell the true story of the Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club, a non-profit organization devoted to inner-city horsemanship in north Philadelphia. Idris Elba s estranged son in Concrete Cowboys will be played by Caleb McLaughlin, who is currently best known for his role as Lucas Sinclair in Netflix s hit series Stranger Things. Concrete Cowboys was also the title of a late 1970s TV show starring Jerry Reed, but the two are otherwise unrelated. Elba and McLaughlin will also be joined in Concrete Cowboys by Byron Bowers (The Chi), Jharrel Jerome (When They See Us), and Lorraine Toussaint (Selma).6. WESLEY SNIPES AND LESLIE JONES ARE COMING 2 AMERICA (Photo by Warner Bros.)We ve known for a while that Paramount Pictures had scheduled the Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall sequel Coming 2 America for December 18, 2020 (up against the video game adaptation Uncharted and the remakes of Dune and West Side Story), but it wasn t until this week that casting news really ramped up. The stars returning from the original 1988 comedy include James Earl Jones, John Amos reprising his role as the owner of the Scottish-themed McDowell s fast food restaurant, and Louie Anderson as a McDowell s employee. The new cast members will include Wesley Snipes as General Izzi, the military dictator of a neighboring nation, Saturday Night Live star Leslie Jones, Kiki Layne as Prince Akeem s American daughter, and rapper Rick Ross.7. REMAKES OF HOME ALONE AND NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM TO DEBUT ON DISNEY+(Photo by 20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Ever since it was first announced last year, we ve known that the upcoming Disney+ streaming service would be the home for some of Disney s live action remakes, including Lady and the Tramp and The Sword in the Stone. This week, we learned that Disney+ will also be the destination for several remakes of some of the 20th Century Fox properties that Disney acquired earlier this year. Although there may be (and probably will be) others, the four titles specifically mentioned were Home Alone, Cheaper by the Dozen, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and Night at the Museum. With the possible exception of Night at the Museum, these titles fit right in with the theme of Disney focusing their theatrical efforts on big movies. We already got some news about the Home Alone remake this week with the revelation that Disney reportedly hopes to cast Melissa McCarthy as Kevin s mom. The Disney+ streaming app will launch on November 12, 2019.8. KEVIN HART NOW ATTACHED TO UPTOWN SATURDAY NIGHT REMAKE (Photo by Warner Bros.)Because the development process can sometimes take several years, the reality is that there are many film projects that never get made at all. For example, back in 2002, we first heard about plans for a remake of the 1974 crime comedy Uptown Saturday Night, which originally featured the trio of Harry Belafonte, Bill Cosby, and Sidney Poitier. At that point, Will Smith had been attached to both produce and star in the remake, but in the 17 years since, Smith dropped out (he s still one of the remake s producers). In the last week, we heard first that Uptown Saturday Night will be directed by Rick Famuyiwa (Dope, Brown Sugar), and then that it is now Kevin Hart who is attached to star. It s not yet known who might join Hart in the remake, but an easy guess might be one of Hart s frequent costars, like maybe Ice Cube or Dwayne Johnson.9. SLEEPER YOUNG ADULT HIT AFTER TO GET A SEQUEL(Photo by Quantrell D. Colbert/ © Aviron Pictures)If you re from outside a certain specific target demographic, it s possible that you don t remember (or have never even heard of) the recent 2019 romantic drama After (Rotten at 18%). If that is where you fall, you might also be surprised to discover that After earned nearly million from a budget of just million. Having said that, only million of that was earned domestically, suggesting that After was more successful overseas. Regardless, the film apparently did well enough for its producers to move forward with plans for a sequel called After We Collided, based on another novel in the YA series by author Anna Todd. Josephine Langford and Hero Fiennes Tiffin are both expected to return for the sequel, which will be directed by Roger Kumble (Cruel Intentions) when it starts filming later this month.Like this? What’s potentially more ambitious and spectacular than a new Star Wars movie or series? How about taking on one of the seminal sci-fi texts that inspired George Lucas’ many journeys to a galaxy far, far away: Isaac Asimov’s Foundation books. That is just what Apple TV+ has done with its newest series, Foundation, a sci-fi drama of epic scope and deep-rooted emotion that charts a future in which warring factions and philosophies fight to lead the future of humanity. The idea for the adaptation came from The Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises story scribe David S. Goyer, who fell in love with the books as a kid after being gifted them by his father, and key to his vision was bringing the books, which reflected a post-WWII world and worldview, up to date to reflect our current times. So it is that the, well, foundations of Foundation, remain intact, but certain characters and arcs have been tweaked and fleshed out to make the story pop with currency and relevance.Rotten Tomatoes correspondent Nikki Novak spoke with Goyer about his approach to the adaptation as well as the stacked cast of audience favorites and sparky up-and-comers who helped bring it to life: Jared Harris (Dr. Hari Seldon), Lou Llobell (Gaal Dornick), Lee Pace (Brother Day), Leah Harvey (Salvor Hardin), and Alfred Enoch (Raych Seldon). During extended interviews, they talk about Goyer’s vision and its wild scope; how raw emotion, practical sets, and some very uncomfortable costumes keep their series grounded; and tease what might – and might not – be in the mysterious vault that lies at the center of the first season’s early episodes.Foundation episodes are now streaming on Apple TV+, including the first episode, which is available for free.
Jean Bentley for Rotten Tomatoes: We know that Guillermo is very devoted to Nandor, but it feels like Nandor tries a little harder in their relationship this season. Has their relationship changed at all? Or are we just going to see more of their interactions this season?Novak: I think from Nandor s perspective, he s had the rug pulled from underneath him in a way. He s gotten very used to this power dynamic, which is that Guillermo is the lowly familiar and he s holding all the cards. And suddenly that s changed [with Guillermo s discovery that he s descended from the famed vampire-hunting Van Helsing family]. I definitely felt that at the end of season two. I was like, this relationship will never be the same again. It motivates him to go, okay, have I got to be nice to this guy? Guillermo is in danger now. He s in peril. I can t pretend anymore that I don t care for him. And I think that s something of a mini revelation within himself — he doesn t want to care, but he does. That s a very human emotion to go through, where you don t want to care about something, but you find yourself compelled to care. We want to be colder than we actually are. We want to be more single-minded. We want to be more ruthless than we actually are. The human heart finds a way of letting us know that that matters, and I think that s nice to see between Nandor and Guillermo.Rotten Tomatoes: Is Guillermo in love with Nandor?Novak: Of course he is. [To Guillén] Of course you are.Guillén: After spending so much time with someone that started off as a master-and-servant relationship, the waters can get murky. I like putting Guillermo on a tightrope, and the balancing act of any given moment he could fall one way or the other where he s like, whoa, he s in love with him? Or, oh, I guess he was just really looking for a true friendship and connection with another human being. But I think that there is something there that he definitely has love for him. He would not stick around if he did not have love for Nandor. You have to love someone to stick around that long and to put up with the mistreatment. It s almost Stockholm Syndrome. What that means at the end, I don t know. We re going through that journey together. But we definitely start asking questions this season, especially about sexuality, which is a hard conversation to have in general. And given Guillermo s background and his upbringing, that s not a conversation that you have at the dinner table. And we have that conversation at a dinner table.(Photo by Russ Martin/FX)Rotten Tomatoes: Now that Guillermo knows he has this power, he feels like a bubbling pot — like he s got to explode at some point, right?Guillén: Well, everyone has their limits, right? And you can push people s buttons, but eventually you can t be surprised if they push back or they explode. Not that that s justifiable, but someone can only take so many beatings, or so many things going wrong or being mistreated, that it s human nature — you want to defend yourself. Everyone has their limits and Guillermo is definitely being pushed to his this season. And there will be a big explosion from it.Rotten Tomatoes: In the second episode of the season premiere, Kayvan ends up having to impersonate the other vampires impersonating Nandor. What was the most fun impersonation that you got to do? What was the hardest part?Novak: When I read that I was like, what have they done to me? I ve got to pretend to be all these characters and I ve got to portray them as Nandor, but it s them, but it s Nandor, but it s them. I ve got to mimic their voices, and they might be in the same room as I do it. Usually if I m mimicking someone they re a very safe distance away. But I thought that there s only one way, really, of giving myself the best shot to pull it off, and that s just asking Matt, can you record your lines for me? Because at the end of the day, I m playing Laszlo. And then the same with Mark. And then with Guillermo s scene, I didn t ask Harvey to record his lines because the scene felt more about the other person and we did it so many different ways because it was such a subtle scene.(Photo by Russ Martin/FX)Novak: I haven t actually seen this episode yet. So I m still kind of dry-mouthly waiting and going, Oh God, no, what have I done? It felt very vulnerable for me to do this because at the end of the day, the audience is going to go, Well, I know that character. And I don t believe that that s really Laszlo. Or, I don t believe that that s really Guillermo. I don t believe that s not Nadja. So it was just buckle down and go to town and go for broke, basically. A good impression for me is always about finding a groove, whether it be physically — with Matt, I started leaning on one leg and kind of like this with my hand and suddenly you re like, okay, that felt good and that felt fun. It was really contorting my face for Guillermo in a way that Harvey s eyebrows can do. Mine can t necessarily do that, but it s that worry that he constantly has of being found out. Because his heart s so involved in everything.Rotten Tomatoes: I think it turned out really well, to the point where I wondered if everyone ADR d (Automated Dialogue Replacement) your lines.Novak: I think all of my voice work s in there, apart from Nadja and Kristen [Schaal, whose character returns this season].Rotten Tomatoes: Part of the fun of the show is that the characters don t change. They re just their own self-absorbed selves. No spoilers, but this season they have a new mission that could be challenging for them. Do you want to see them change? Do you want to see them incrementally grow? Or is it fun to play people who live so long that it doesn t actually matter? A year is like a second for them.Guillén: If we look back at the first season, every episode Guillermo added a little bit of a puzzle to his trajectory, and the vampires would wrap up their story in that episode. So it s nice to see the investment in each episode leading up to something with all the characters, which is really nice. In this season I think we did that really well, especially with Nandor s character and love interests and past lovers coming up and what that does to the dynamic and how that makes people feel in the group. And also with putting Nandor and Nadja s characters in a place of power and Mark s and Matt s characters becoming friends. It shows this really nice, intimate friendship growing with them. So it is nice, and it gives you something to aspire to every episode.(Photo by Russ Martin/FX)Novak: I mean, characters that make you laugh, goofy characters, vulnerable characters, stupid characters, you never want them to lose that sense of vulnerability. The evolution of their relationships with each other is always something that is super interesting and exciting to play. I think the beauty of Laszlo, for example, and the beauty of Nadja is they will never change. And the way they live their lives with this kind of abandon and this kind of like, f k it, it s my way or the highway [ethos]. Those kinds of characters, you really enjoy that sense they give you of wow, I would love to be more like them in my real life. That fearlessness. With Nandor, he s more vulnerable. He reminds you of all the times you ve f ked up. And that s how you relate to him. With Guillermo, it s, oh my God, if I was stuck in the middle of all these mad people, I would have the same reaction. Guillermo has always got you on the edge of the seat. So I think in answer to your question without having answered it, I m sorry, is that that s the beauty of the show for me: It offers up all these different avenues and all of these different reminders of your own life. And all these different lifestyle choices that you could adopt if you wanted for a bit. And then find your own. What We Do in the Shadows season 3 premieres Thursday September 2, 2021, and new episodes air Thursdays at 10 p.m. on FX.On an Apple device? Resistance keeps certain aspects of these larger-than-life baddies grounded and relatable. We do have amazing villains. People read into the villains as villains in their own lives or they may read into them as historical villains, Henson explained. We talked about the ancient Romans as conquerors who appropriated different lands that they settled in. Those were more of our references for the villains. But [the Skeksis] are delicious villains and they re great and are very horrible and very scary. From the sound of things, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will blend a fair share of horror, fantasy and drama together that is sure to appeal to all ages. You may even need a reminder from time to time that these are puppets you re rooting for.The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance premieres on August 30 to Netflix. The Dark Crystal Cast With Character PhotosThe Gelfling:
(Photo by HBO)“The Long Night” will go down in television history as the Game of Thrones episode that made “Arya Stark” a verb.Episode 3 of season 8 started slow on Sunday night, opening as if from the backstage of a play, with all of the players grabbing their props and – “Places everyone!” – moving to their marks. It is called a theater of war, after all. The curtain raised on the first highlight of the night:1. Setting the Scene: The Frontlines(Photo by HBO)Taking their position as wight-fodder in this fight: the Unsullied led by Grey Worm, the Dothraki (including the tall one, Qhono, played by Staz Nair, in case you ever wondered), Podrick Payne, Brienne of Tarth, Jaime Lannister, Tormund Giantsbane, Ser Beric Dondarrion, The Hound, Gendry, Edd Tollett, Samwell Tarly, Ghost! (hereafter with an exclamation point), Ser Jorah Mormont.Meanwhile, Jon and Daenerys survey the scene from the distance with dragons Drogon and Rhaegal. Sansa, Arya, and Ser Davos are on the ramparts when a lone rider appears.2. Red Woman on a White Field(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Melisandre rides in out of nowhere and says, all casual, to Ser Jorah: “Do you speak their tongue? Tell them to lift their swords.”Speaking a spell/prayer in High Valyrian and grasping Quono’s arakh, she sets the Dothraki swords – all of them! – on fire. If only Ser Jorah had Heartsbane out at the time. She rides on, drops the mic in front of Grey Worm, and says: “Valar morghulis.” Grey Worm: “Valar dohaeris.” Enough said. The fact that Melisandre shows up isn’t as disturbing as what she says to Ser Davos: That he needn’t bother executing her, because she’d be dead before dawn.An aside: Watching the Dothraki flaming swords get extinguished in the dark is devastating with the final flames frantically slashing as they sputter. And that Ser Jorah and Ghost went with them is, in that moment, heartbreaking. Jorah and a few Dothraki horses and men return, but not Ghost.3. He Who Chose Edd in the Office Death-Watch Pool Wins(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Edd Tollet is the first named character to die on screen – maybe. It’s so dark, that I can’t tell wight from warrior. So many were slaughtered before Daenerys and Jon showed up with Drogon and Rhaegal and set fire to the field, we may have missed one.Brienne saves Jaime, Jaime saves Brienne, Edd saves Sam. Podrick, Gendry, The Hound – all slashing at a tsunami of undead.4. She-Bear in Charge(Photo by HBO)“Open the gate,” Lyanna Mormont screams as the live fighters retreat into Winterfell. Can’t help but think that Jorah was absolutely right: This is no place for Lyanna, the future of her house. Listen to your elders, girl. She later takes down the wight Giant with dragonglass to the eyeball when he attempts to snack on her, but dies in the process. If you were hoping she would be only mostly dead, you’d be disappointed later in the episode.5. You Had One Job, Daenerys(Photo by HBO)Sure, the Unsullied in perfect formation even in the midst of madness was an impressive sight to see, but they also look an awful lot like future wights for all their heroism. They back up against spikes in the trenches that are supposed to be set aflame. Daenerys doesn’t see the signal, flaming arrows from the ramparts keep going out before they can catch, and the wights keep taking out the runners with torches.Melisandre saves everyone’s asses (for the time being) by lighting the trench with her spell/prayer.6. 华体会官网app下载 This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Creed III, Firestarter, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2.This WEEK S TOP STORYIP MAN S DONNIE YEN JOINS JOHN WICK CHAPTER 4(Photo by Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/Getty Images)John Wick (Certified Fresh at 86%) could have just been a very well-produced action revenge thriller, but the film s star Keanu Reeves, director Chad Stahelski, and screenwriter Derek Kolstad figured out a winning formula has has led to sequels and even a spinoff series focused on its secret world of assassins. Production on John Wick: Chapter 4 has been held back a little bit by both the COVID-19 pandemic (and scheduling conflicts with Reeves other upcoming #4 sequel, The Matrix 4, scheduled for 12/22/2021), but the pieces are finally coming together for filming to happen at locations in France, Germany, and Japan this summer. Just last week, we learned that pop star Rina Sawayama will make her acting debut in a lead role in John Wick: Chapter 4, and now we know about another big addition to the cast. Hong Kong superstar Donnie Yen has recently increased his Hollywood profile with roles in films like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Certified Fresh at 84%) and Disney s live-action Mulan (Certified Fresh at 72%), and next, he will co-star in John Wick: Chapter 4 as an old friend of Wick s who shares many of his experiences and enemies. John Wick: Chapter 4 is currently scheduled for May 27, 2022. Finally, in what is probably a coincidence, both Donnie Yen and Keanu Reeves have been rumored in recent years to be in consideration for the role of Marvel s Namor the Sub-Mariner, with Yen even Tweeting this audition picture. Marvel Studios has made no official Namor announcements.Other Top Headlines1. ISSA RAE JOINS INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE SEQUEL AS SPIDER-WOMAN (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Some weeks reveal certain trends in development news, and this week, the theme involves stars on the upswing landing big new projects with the potential of expanding their careers. Let s start with Issa Rae, whose popular YouTube series Awkward Black Girl led to the acclaimed HBO series Insecure (Fresh at 96%), which likewise led to a supporting role in The Hate U Give (Certified Fresh at 97%) and lead roles in The Photograph (Fresh at 74%), and The Lovebirds (Fresh at 65%). Issa Rae will also provide the voice of Jessica Drew, AKA Spider-Woman, in the upcoming sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Certified Fresh at 97%) as the sequel s first new cast member. It is not yet known if Rae might also be in the running to play the role also suspected to be Jessica Drew in the untitled female-centric Spider-Man spinoff that director Olivia Wilde is currently developing (though it s also worth noting that there have been a few different Marvel heroes all called Spider-Woman). The Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel is currently scheduled for release on October 7, 2022. Although Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld are both confirmed to be returning, other stars like Nicolas Cage (as Spider-Man Noir) and John Mulaney (as Peter Porker/Spider-Ham) haven t yet been announced.2. DWAYNE JOHNSON AND YAHYA ABDUL-MATEEN II TEAM UP FOR EMERGENCY CONTACT (Photo by Priscilla Grant, Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is not yet a household name, but his face is becoming more and more familiar following breakout roles in two DC Comics projects, first as the villain Black Manta in Aquaman (Fresh at 65%), and then as nope-we re-not-spoiling-it in HBO s Watchmen (Fresh at 96%). Roles in US and The Trial of the Chicago 7 will also soon be followed by performances in the Candyman reboot (8/27/2021), The Matrix 4 (12/22/2021), and Aquaman 2 (12/16/2022) (for which he is currently preparing). Abdul-Mateen II and Dwayne Johnson are teaming up to produce an action movie set in Austin, Texas for Warner Bros. called Emergency Contact, in which Abdul-Mateen II will also star (it s not yet known if Johnson will have a supporting role, but it sounds like he s not the film s star). The premise of Emergency Contact is being kept secret for now, except that it s a high-concept, high-octane action film set in Austin, and that the screenwriters also worked with Dwayne Johnson on his upcoming DC Comics movie Black Adam (7/29/2022).3. SAMARA WEAVING LEADS NEW ADDITIONS TO CAST OF DAMIEN CHAZELLE S BABYLON(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Damien Chazelle, who won an Academy Award for directing La La Land (Certified Fresh at 91%), and who also directed Whiplash (Certified Fresh at 94%) and First Man (Certified Fresh at 87%), has been trying to get his movie Babylon about Hollywood in the 1920s going for a few years now (much of that delay was caused by COVID-19, obviously). Babylon is going to feature a large ensemble cast led by Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, which will now also include Samara Weaving (Ready or Not), Max Mingella (The Social Network), Lukas Haas (Witness), Eric Roberts (The Pope of Greenwich Village), and rocker-turned-actor Flea of the band Red Hot Chili Peppers. Katherine Waterston, who co-starred with Joaquin Phoenix in Inherent Vice, also joined Babylon in a separate announcement. Paramount Pictures has scheduled Babylon for a limited release on December 25, 2022 which will then platform to a wide release on January 6, 2023.4. ROBERT DE NIRO, ANYA TAYLOR-JOY, CHRIS ROCK, AND TAYLOR SWIFT AMONG NEW ADDITIONS TO DAVID O. RUSSELL S LATEST ENSEMBLE (Photo by JA/Everett Collection)Another director who is assembling an ambitious ensemble for his next project is David O. Russell, whose last film six years ago was the 2015 Miracle Mop movie Joy, starring Jennifer Lawrence. We ve known for a while now that the leads in his next film will be Christian Bale and Margot Robbie, supported by John David Washington, Rami Malek, and Zoe Saldana. This week, however, the cast list sort of ballooned to include Robert De Niro, Mike Myers, Alessandro Nivola, Timothy Olyphant, Andrea Riseborough, Chris Rock, Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Shannon, Anya Taylor-Joy, and pop singer Taylor Swift, in a relatively rare acting performance (Swift s first since Cats). Both the premise and the title of this film are currently being kept secret by 20th Century Studios. Having said that, past reports have described the lead characters as being a doctor and a lawyer who form an unlikely partnership. 5. JONATHAN MAJORS TO PLAY ADONIS NEXT OPPONENT IN CREED III(Photo by The Washington Post/Getty Images)Even lifelong Rocky fans probably have to admit that the franchise was seriously struggling before it was revived in 2015 with the spinoff Creed (Certified Fresh at 95%), which turned the focus towards Adonis Creed, the son of Rocky s friend Apollo, as played by Michael B. Jordan. That film was followed by Creed II (Certified Fresh at 83%), in which Creed squared off against another son of a famous boxer, Ivan Drago, who killed Apollo in Rocky IV (Rotten at 40%). We don t yet know the premise for Creed III (with which Michael B. Jordan will make his feature film directorial debut), but we do now know that Adonis new boxing opponent will be played by Jonathan Majors of HBO s Lovecraft Country. As expected, fans were quick to speculate about who Majors might play, with the most common guess being the son (or some other relative) of Clubber Lang, who was played in Rocky III (Fresh at 63%) by Mr. T, whose last major role was over 10 years ago in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Certified Fresh at 86%). It is not yet known how the recent acquisition of MGM by Amazon might impact the theatrical release of Creed III.6. TIFFANY HADDISH TO PORTRAY FLORENCE GRIFFITH JOYNER IN NEW BIOPIC(Photo by Michele K. Short/Universal Pictures)The recent career of Tiffany Haddish has been so prolific and ubiquitous that it might be easy to forget that her breakout role in Girls Trip (Certified Fresh at 91%) came just four years ago in 2017. Haddish hasn t had that much time to expand into other genres besides comedy, but she is indeed taking her shot at an ambitious dramatic role that will also require (ostensibly) a good amount of physical personal training, as she is producing and will star in a biopic about the life of three-time Olympic gold medalist Florence Griffith Joyner, popularly known as Flo-Jo. Florence Griffith Joyner (who died in 1998) was an American track and field athlete who in 1988 set still-standing world records in both the 100 meter and 200 meter dash, and then retired less than a year later. Tiffany Haddish will also be producing a documentary series about Flo-Jo as a companion to the narrative feature.7. GLENN CLOSE JOINS TWINS-STYLE COMEDY BROTHERS(Photo by Sony Pictures Classics)A little over a year ago, The Weekly Ketchup reported Avengers: Infinity War co-stars Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage were signed to co-star in a Twins-style comedy called Brothers for director Macon Blair (I Don t Feel At Home in This World Anymore, Certified Fresh at 89%). Before we get to this week s actual news, this is a good place to remind everyone that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now so big that its list of illustrious alumni is massive. That being said, yes, Brothers is going to feature another MCU star, and that will be Glenn Close, who appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy (Certified Fresh at 92%) as the leader of the Nova Corps. Close s role in Brothers isn t yet known, but an obvious guess is that she could be playing the mother of the two siblings played by Brolin and Dinklage. (Collider also pointed out that Glenn Close did play the mother of Ed Helms and Owen Wilson in the similarly-titled Father Figures in 2017.)8. IT: CHAPTER TWO ALUM JOINS REBOOT OF STEPHEN KING ADAPTATION FIRESTARTER(Photo by Michael Tran/Getty Images)One of the more memorable kills in IT: Chapter Two (Fresh at 62%) is the moment when a young girl is pulled under the bleachers by Pennywise the evil clown. That girl was played by 8-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who is now 11, and she has been cast as the lead in another Stephen King adaptation, the reboot of Firestarter, which was first adapted as a 1984 movie (Rotten at 37%) starring Drew Barrymore. The announcement of Armstrong s casting came along with a set photo of Armstrong in character, wearing a jacket that looks like it might have been in or around, you know, a fire. Armstrong joins a cast that includes the already announced Zac Efron as her father (originally played by David Keith) and Michael Greyeyes as the Native American government agent assigned to befriend her (controversially played by George C. Scott in the original film). Former ER star Gloria Reuben also landed a Firestarter role this week.9. ALICIA SILVERSTONE RETURNS TO HIGH SCHOOL IN REBEL WILSON COMEDY SCHOOL YEAR(Photo by ©Paramount Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)It has been over 25 years since the now-classic teen comedy Clueless (Certified Fresh at 81%), and the career of its star Alicia Silverstone has taken her a lot of places, including Gotham City as Batgirl (Batman Robin, Rotten at 12%). Silverstone, now 44, is signed to return to high school (sort of) in the Paramount Players high school comedy Senior Year. Rebel Wilson will star in Senior Year as a cheerleader who wakes up from a coma after 20 years to return to her high school to regain her status and claim the prom queen crown that eluded her. This week in TV news: a new Stephen King adaptation, a Marvel crossover, and casting updates for Joss Whedon’s HBO sci-fi project The Nevers, DC Universe s Titans, season 3 of The Sinner, and more.Stephen King s The Stand Gets a New Miniseries — and a New EndingCBS All Access has planned a limited event series based on Stephen King s The Stand, for which the author will write a final chapter not found in the book. The cast includes Westworld s James Marsden as working-class factory man Stu Redman, Aquaman s Amber Heard as the conflicted Nadine Cross, Odessa Young as the young, pregnant Frannie Goldsmith, and Henry Zaga as the deaf and mute newfound leader Nick Andros. The series takes place a post-apocalyptic world decimated by plague where the forces of good and evil, and the fate of mankind rests on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old other Mother Abagail and a handful of survivors. Their worst nightmares are embodied in a man with a lethal smile and unspeakable powers: Randall Flagg, the Dark Man, per the official description. The Stand’s previous adaptations include a 1994 miniseries that starred Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald, and Rob Lowe and a 2008 Marvel comic series. The Man Who Fell to Earth Series in the Works From Star Trek: Discovery Producers(Photo by Courtesy Everett Collection)The Man Who Fell to Earth is turning into a TV series. Based on the novel of the same name and the 1976 film starring David Bowie, the series will follow an alien who arrives on Earth at a turning point in human evolution and must confront his own past to determine our future, per the official announcement.“Walter Tevis’ visionary novel gave us a tech god Willy Wonka from another planet, brought to life by David Bowie’s legendary performance, that foretold Steve Jobs’ and Elon Musk’s impacts on our world. The series will imagine the next step in our evolution, seen through the eyes of an alien who must learn what it means to become human, even as he fights for the survival of his species,” co-showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet said in a statement. Kurtzman and Lumet are both producers on CBS All Access Star Trek: Discovery.Marvel s Runaways Meet Cloak DaggerMarvel s teen superhero shows are staging a crossover: In the upcoming third season of the Hulu drama Runaways, the main characters from the Freeform drama Cloak Dagger will meet up with the titular teen superhero team. Details about the story line have not yet been revealed.“It’s so fun being able to do something that revels in the Mighty Marvel Manner! Having these young heroes cross over allows fans of both shows to see the adventure everyone has been waiting for and we’ve only hinted at,” said Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb in a statement announcing the news.Season 3 of Runaways premieres all 10 episodes December 13 on Hulu.Evil Is More Than an Exorcism of the Week The CBS drama Evil, which follows a psychologist, a priest-in-training, and a carpenter who investigate the backlog of unexplained mysteries in the Catholic church, is — as seen in the trailer above — much scarier than any series the network has aired before. But just because it s a procedural doesn t mean the series will feel the same from week to week. We are trying to avoid exorcism of the week, co-creator Robert King told reporters at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Thursday. The second episode is about miracles. It’s about those question marks in life that you don’t quite know how they happen — a school where all the girls at the school start laughing, and it seems to be almost viral. I would say the other thing is you’re looking at life and you’re seeing evil, not with a capital E but with a small e — the boss who throws things at his employees. Where does that fit in? So that is really what our people are [doing]: Just figuring out what is genetically based villainy, if you want to use that word instead of evil, and what is something that’s even bigger, something more supernatural? But also looking at hope.
