Howard took Howard Prime s place in a Berlin that fell into disarray after a devastating plague that the Prime world blamed on the Alpha world.Season 2 of Counterpart premieres on Sunday, less than a year after the first season. That’s because Starz was so confident in Counterpart they ordered two seasons back to back. Now she’s going on spy missions with a sense of doubt about whether her mission is truly just.“As the season goes on, you’ll see how that doubt plays out between her and Peter and the baby and the decisions they have to make, together and individually,” Boniadi said. “It’s a huge season of self-discovery for Clare. Yes, people can crack under pressure, but I think people can also let things slip out when they’re comfortable. I think she definitely employs, at different moments, both tactics.”Naya is also dealing with her own personal crisis upon finding out the other universe exists.“I think there’s the awareness, the shocking awareness that there is this other version of her, but she doesn’t know who and where she is and what she does in her life,” Gabriel said. “She could be in a very different line of work. She could be part of a different religion. Who knows?”The arrival of Naya complicates the season for every Prime character trapped in our world.“The whole season 2 is about everybody from the other world being on the run,” Boniadi said. “Clare and Howard Prime have to worry about that.”4. EMILY WAKES UP(Photo by Starz)A big part of Howard s domestic life revolves around visiting the hospital to read to his comatose wife Emily (Olivia Williams), who wakes up in season 2. Marks offered a few clues about the secrets a waking Emily could reveal.“Emily and Emily Prime [are] both chasing after the Emily of the past,” Marks said. “So you have the present with two counterparts and then you’ve got this past that is a whole other version of oneself.”5. JAMES CROMWELL JOINS THE CAST, AND HE S GOT BAD NEWS FOR BOTH HOWARDS(Photo by Starz)Oscar nominee James Cromwell (Babe) joins Counterpart in episode 3 as the character Yanek, an officer at the Echo facility with whom Howard interacts quite a bit.“It was awesome,” Simmons said of sharing scenes with Cromwell. “He came in and really had the vast majority of the heavy lifting in most of our scenes together, certainly in our first couple of episodes. I was almost a spectator sitting there watching him, because my character just doesn’t have a lot to say early on in our relationship, and his character does.”Horowitz explained a little more about Yanek.“The Cromwell character with Howard as his prisoner furthers what I think the Howard/Howard stuff was doing in season 1,” Horowitz said. “[It] continues to have our Howard learn more about himself through seeing himself through his other character who is his peer in some respect.”Yanek’s theory is that when there are two of anything, one must ultimately destroy the other.“We call it the Highlander theory, ” Marks joked, referring to the 1986 film in which There can be only one, among a murderous group of immortals that pick each other off. “Now he may not be right, but he’s certainly got some really good points.”In the case of Clare, one already has destroyed the other, but Boniadi doesn’t feel every counterpart will meet a violent end.“It’s like you have two voices in your head or there’s two sides of you,” Boniadi sad. “Eventually for there to be some kind of resolution or survival, one has to win over the other one.”Naya has not met her counterpart, but she’s not out to destroy Naya Prime either.“I think ultimately there’s a spirit of reconciliation in her,” Gabriel said. “I think she wants to believe that two possibilities can exist so perhaps that applies to how she would approach her counterpart. I think she would be more curious in her other and more interested than threatened.”6. THE DOOR IS CLOSEDAfter the terrorist attack on our world, the door to Prime world remains shut. While politicians work toward a diplomatic reopening, many counterparts are stranded in their others’ worlds.“Both Howards are stuck on the other side,” Simmons said. “When season 2 opens, they are both in their other’s world and neither one is entirely happy about it.”This means there will be few scenes with two Howards, but each Howard will learn more about the other on their own.“We also elevate the stakes of the world through Management, which was introduced briefly in season 1 and is really the big player in season 2,” Horowitz said. “We really get a sense of what that hierarchical structure is of the worlds and who’s actually controlling and pulling the strings between those two worlds. I think that has really interesting effects on Howard and that core pursuit of which Howard is the true Howard.”Marks wouldn’t reveal exactly when the door might reopen, but teased, “Nothing can stay closed forever.”7. NAYA’S RELIGION AND FAMILY WILL PAY OFF(Photo by Starz)As introduced, Naya regularly prays to Mecca as part of her Muslim practice, and Gabriel said her religion remains a prominent theme in season 2.“It’s not leaned into too heavily, which I think is a good thing,” Gabriel said. “It is very much about her relationship to God and how that’s being challenged with the awareness of this other world; that she’s primarily there to do her jobm so we’ll see that more and more, her getting closer to the truth.”Naya also reveals to colleagues that she’s a mother. Boniadi said the new season’s eighth episode is just as significant.“It doesn’t go into backstory, but it’s an evolution to Clare,” she said. “It was a very raw and meaningful episode. Episode eight is more about who is Clare? The real Clare, not the one that was made that she thought she was or believed she was. That’s what begins to unfold for her in episode eight.”9. THEY SAVED SOME OF THE BIGGEST TWISTS FOR SEASON 2 (AND HOPEFULLY 3)The two-season order allowed the creators of Counterpart to parse out some of the plot twists over two seasons. Even though they’re still waiting to hear if there will be a season 3, they have the confidence to hold a few more surprises.“Also there were things that we were going to reveal in season 2 that now we’re just like, ‘Well, let’s hope for a season 3, and we’ll hopefully get to reveal it then,’” Marks said.Simmons certainly hopes Counterpart continues, but he’s not putting any pressure on Marks.“Obviously people like to have jobs, but both creatively and — whatever — lifestyle, it’s very much a one-season-at-a-time mindset,” Simmons said. “At least for me and I know for Justin as well.”10. COUNTERPART TALENT HAVE GINORMOUS PROJECTS IN THE WORKS(Photo by Starz)Counterpart stars and producers have some major upcoming projects; for one, Simmons hopes to reprise his role as Commissioner Gordon in Matt Reeves Batman film, The Batman.“I have not met with Matt as of yet,” Simmons clarified. “I know that I signed up to do as many as three moviesm and I would love to get a chance to expand on Commissioner Gordon. I kind of dipped my toe in that water — so yeah, I hope so. There’s a lot of DC stuff going on so I hope it’s the Matt Reeves Batman. If not, I hope it’s something else.”Horowitz is producing Damien Chazelle’s upcoming Apple TV series.“It will be ambitious and interesting and will hopefully approach the TV space in a new way and find a fresh way of using that medium to tell story in a way that hopefully you haven’t seen told before,” Horowitz said.The show won’t be about music like Chazelle’s Whiplash and La La Land were, but music will always be a factor.“I think music is always going to be a part of Damien’s filmmaking,” Horowitz said. “Even in First Man, I think, music is a huge part of that film even though the film isn’t specifically about a musician or music itself.”Horowitz is also producing the movie Star Girl for Disney’s Streaming service, based on the YA novel by Jerry Spinelli.“It’s really a story about two kids in high school and ultimately about young love and not being afraid to be the person you want to be,” Horowitz said.Marks, a screenwriter on Top Gun: Maverick, has already completed a screenplay for The Jungle Book 2. He told Rotten Tomatoes that he and Jon Favreau co-wrote the sequel to their blockbuster film in December 2017, but they have to wait until the director finishes work on The Lion King revival before they start production. Marks revealed that the character Mowgli has aged along with the young actor, Neel Sethi, who starred in the 2016 film and has said he s up for a sequel.“Jon and I saw The Jungle Book story as a coming-of-age story and the second movie continues in that direction,” Marks said. “Really, if it’s done right, it should break some hearts with where it goes.” He added that the sequel will pull in more animal characters from author Rudyard Kipling’s book because “there’s such a wealth of characters in that world.”Boniadi stars in Hotel Mumbai, based on the 2008 terror attack on the Taj Hotel. Her character is a composite of two real guests at the Taj during the attack. Armie Hammer plays her husband.“It’s a story of what we do when we are faced with such tragedy and how are able to set aside our differences and band together just to survive,” she said. “Bullets don’t discriminate based on religion and ethnicity and race. She’s a Muslim woman, so these Islamic terrorists and extremist don’t stand for what she has been raised to believe is her religion. More than that, it’s about the resilience of the human spirit to overcome and set aside differences.”Gabriel will appear in Human Capital from director Marc Meyers, based on the book by Stephen Amidon. The actor went so far as to give his blessing to the new crew and say his goodbyes to Candyman on Twitter. It turns out rumors of a new actor wielding the honey-coated hook were premature (at one point, Peele’s Get Out star Lakeith Stanfield was rumored to be taking over the role). Peele and DaCosta are positioning the new movie as a direct sequel to the 1992 film.Star Abdul-Mateen II is playing grown-up Anthony McCoy, the baby kidnapped and used as bait by Candyman in the original film (Stanfield was rumored to be up for this role as well). Original star Vanessa Williams also reprises her role of Anthony’s mother, Anne-Marie McCoy.Virginia Madsen Is Not Back, But Helen Is(Photo by TriStar Pictures)At the end of the 1992 Candyman (spoiler alert), Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) – the graduate student studying urban legends who revives the ghostly killer – dies from burns she receives when Candyman attempts to immolate the residents of the Cabrini-Green public housing project where the film is set. The final scene shows her distraught husband Trevor (Xander Berkeley) saying her name 5 times in front of a mirror, inviting a scarred Helen to appear and murder him with a hook.Although Madsen is not returning for the sequel, the character of Helen Lyle is, this time played by Cassie Kramer. Is she an apparition? Were the events at the end of the original some kind of strange dream sequence? Or will the new film incorporate flashbacks to the past? We’ll have to wait and see.Candyman Has New Abilities(Photo by Universal Pictures)The ending of the original played on a key theme in the work of author Clive Barker – that of the protagonist becoming the thing they are running from or tracking down (see also: Nightbreed and The Midnight Meat Train) – as the film ends with Helen literally becoming a new “Candywoman.” The new trailer seems to hint that Candyman has upped his game a bit. Rather than appear as a physical being, he seems to exist only in reflections and shadows, and judging from the shot where Abdul-Mateen II sees himself as Candyman in a mirror, Anthony McCoy doesn’t appear to become a Candyman surrogate like Helen, but actually the man himself.Gentrification Is a Key ThemeRyan FujitaniThe final building of what once comprised the Cabrini-Green housing project on Chicago’s North Side was demolished in 2011. Sandwiched between two wealthy Chicago neighborhoods, Lincoln Park and the Gold Coast, Cabrini-Green had always butted up against encroaching gentrification. The attempt to pave over a dark past with trendy cafes and art galleries seems to be a main theme for the new film, which takes place in a now-gentrified neighborhood where Cabrini-Green once stood.Peele has been very upfront about maintaining the tensions of race and class in the new film. “The original was a landmark film for black representation in the horror genre,” he said in a statement released after the film was announced. “Alongside Night of the Living Dead, Candyman was a major inspiration for me as filmmaker — and to have a bold new talent like Nia at the helm of this project is truly exciting. I think my issue with fandom is that it’s really problematic. It’s probably the most problematic thing facing the genre.” He went on to indicate how this may come into play in Candyman.“I think what we’re trying to do with Candyman is both be mischievous in how we address the relationship to the first film but also be very satisfying.”There Will Be Familiar MusicLike the use of a modified version of The Luniz s I Got Five on It in Us, one of the best parts of the new teaser – as indicated by the #SayMyName hashtag trending on Twitter minutes after it dropped – was the way Destiny’s Child’s 1999 hit “Say My Name” was remixed with composer Philip Glass’ original score for the first Candyman.Glass released a new recording of the Candyman score in 2016, but it’s unlikely the 83-year-old will have an active role in the new film. Producer Michael Werner Maas is credited as providing the trailer music, and will likely be involved in remixing at least parts of Glass’ score for inclusion in the new film.There Will Be Nods to the Original Story(Photo by Universal Pictures)As a child in Liverpool, England, the four-year-old soon-to-be-horror author Barker was given some kindly words of advice by his dear, sweet old Nana that would stay with him for the rest of his life. My grandmother warned me, I remember, about going into public toilets because there were men who went around in public toilets and cut the genitals off little boys. This was difficult for a four-year-old to take in, Barker recalls in the making-of documentary Sweets to the Sweet. It terrified the wits out of me. That was the origin of Candyman. Candyman would take the lead in Barker s 1984 short story The Forbidden, which would in turn inspire screenwriter Bernard Rose to take the story of a hook-handed urban legend haunting a rundown housing estate in downtrodden, industrial 1970s Liverpool and re-set it within the walls of the equally troubled Cabrini-Green housing project outside Chicago in the 1990s.The original publication (in a collection called Books of Blood) featured haunting illustrations from artist John Stewart, which appear to get a visual shout-out via some of the graffiti glimpsed in the new trailer.It Doesn t Have a High Bar to Cross, Financially Speaking(Photo by Universal Pictures)Candyman wasn’t a monster box office success in 1992 (it made about .8 million in its domestic release), but it did well enough to earn a theatrically released sequel in 1995’s Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh (29%), which only grossed .9 million. The final entry was a forgettable 1999 straight-to-video installment called Candyman: Day of the Dead (10%). Despite that, the original film, which stands at 75% on the Tomatometer, and the character himself have become iconic in their own right, so while the new film could easily best the box office performance of its predecessors, it will still have to pass muster with adoring horror buffs who may be prone to eye the new project with, at best, cautious optimism.Candyman opens on August 27, 2021.
Living With Yourself star Paul Rudd was tested by having to act opposite himself in the new Netflix comedy. One of the main challenges Rudd faced in playing both versions of Miles, a man who must confront his clone when they meet, was coming up with the actual method of getting in front of the camera and doing it. I would record both parts as audio and I would play the character that was driving the scene, the Marvel Avenger told reporters at the series premiere in Hollywood. [ ] I d look at the tape we had made, and study what I had done, and then I would just be the other guy and try to act opposite that and those movements. It was a bit frantic, to say the least. The show, from former Daily Show writer Timothy Greenberg and now Certified Fresh on the Tomatometer, tells the story of Miles, a middle-aged man struggling with the everyday stresses of life. The mundane-ness of it all, mixed with personal and professional pressures, leads Miles to an odd spa — a referral by his co-worker Dan (Desmin Borges) — which provides a mysterious service that touts the rejuvenation of one s mind and body.(Photo by Netflix)In a world where cutting-edge, quirky self-improvement trends seem to cloud the marketplace, this pricey trip — Miles spends ,000 in cash to fix his life — sounds plausible enough. That is, of course, until he wakes up in a freshly dug grave, wrapped in plastic, in the middle of the forest, only to discover another version of himself at home getting cozy with his wife, Kate (Aisling Bea).While, at first glance, Living With Yourself may be a bit reminiscent of other mishap-riddled clone-themed comedies like the Michael Keaton–starrer Multiplicity, the Netflix series strives for more than just the expected laughs. The eight-episode season delves into thought-provoking concepts like free will, one s own pursuit of happiness, and the rather existential question: Am I a good person? What if there were another you? Greenberg, who also acts as the show s executive producer and showrunner, told Rotten Tomatoes. And what if that other you was the better version of yourself? That simple question is the crux of the story, and one that was prompted by Greenberg’s recurring childhood nightmare. I m sitting at the dining room table and the door would open and there was another me standing there, he explains. My family would be around, and they d be laughing and think it was funny, but I would be terrified. I started being more concerned about what kind of person I was, in general, but also with [my wife and kids], he continues. Why am I sometimes a better or worse version of myself? That became, sort of, a daily concern of mine. After Jon Stewart announced his exit from The Daily Show, Greenberg faced a career conundrum that had him panicked about his next step. I realized I could take this sort of daily concern of how I self-analyze on a day-to-day basis and marry that to these more fantastical elements of, What if there were another you? And What if that other you was the better version of yourself,' he said.Rudd was always at the top of the list of talent Greenberg wanted to play the lead roles, and while Greenberg never dreamed the Marvel Avenger would be interested in the job, Rudd explained that the combination of the writing and the challenge of playing two parts drew him to the series. Normally it seems, with shows, there are one or two episodes written and then the rest is like a one or two-page description of where they re going to take it, Rudd said. This was unique in that all of them were written. And they were all written by one person. So the point of view was very clear. I thought they were funny, inventive, and I loved what it was kind of talking about: this weird, existential dilemma. There s no putting Paul s face over another person s body or anything like that, co-star Aisling Bea said. It s all Paul doing two parts and remembering where he was. It s like a copied and pasted thing — but there s a surprising not amount of special effects. And there s a lot of Paul s acting doing it. Some days, the actor would have to switch back and forth between both characters multiple times, a balancing act that was about as exhausting as it sounds, the actor confirmed. Much of Rudd’s recent experience is in the movie-making world with longer production schedules. On the series, they had roughly three months to shoot what equates to essentially a four-hour movie.Oscar-nominated husband-and-wife directing duo Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine) helm the entire first season. The perspective that this is really one long movie helped lure them away from the arthouse movie-making they re known for. What was sent to us was like eight episodes, Faris said. So, it kind of felt like reading a movie script. And the idea that we could direct all of them made it feel more like a transition from doing a film into episodic, so we didn t really think of it as episodic television. That was really fun, she continued. But the way the show plays with structure and time made it really different from anything we ve ever done. The episodes sort of change perspective and, you know, go back in time and repeat things. Abrams iconic series Lost was a major risk for ABC. It was expensive, it was long, and it left plenty of questions about the group of plane crash survivors who landed on a mysterious island. Now, it s clear that Lost didn t just change the way audiences watched television — it forever altered the way TV shows are created.The show s epic pilot showed audiences and networks alike just what type of stories can be told in primetime. Up until that point, procedural staples (like CSI, Law Order, or House) and multi-camera sitcoms (think Two and a Half Men and Will Grace) were the go-to styles of programming. But Lost presented a plethora of deep concepts in a story format mostly unseen by television audiences. On the surface, it was a primetime soap opera about a diverse group of castaways as they fought for survival after a violent plane crash. But underneath that was a layered exploration of the human condition — with the concepts of free will, good vs. evil, and faith regularly playing an important part in this deeply mythologized journey.It was the beginning of a Mystery Box trend in programming, all thanks to Abrams vision and ace showrunners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. Seven years after Lost premiered, and one year after its polarizing series finale, another ambitious program hit television: Game of Thrones.While there are stark differences between the two programs, one can easily draw a straight line from Lost to Game of Thrones.Hear us out: Yes, George R.R. Martin s books existed long before the series even entered development at HBO. Lost, on the other hand, was cobbled together in such a haphazard manner that its success was baffling to Lindelof and ABC. The channel had been struggling for a hit and, after network exec Lloyd Braun watched the Tom Hanks movie Cast Away, he had an idea. What if there was a plane that crashed and a dozen people survived, and nobody knew each other, Braun told Grantland. Your past was almost irrelevant. You could reinvent who you were. You had to figure out — how do you survive? What do you use for shelter, for water? Is it like Lord of the Flies? How do we get off the island, how do you get home? And I start to get very excited about the idea, and I start thinking about the title Lost. Combine that high cost with how the ongoing story was told, processed, regurgitated, and theorized, and the only other program in recent memory to capture the same caliber of attention was Game of Thrones. Swap out the Dharma Initiative, the Smoke Monster, and the Others with White Walkers, dragons, and the Dothraki and the similarities become clearer. There s also the fact that every episode in GoT s final season cost million apiece. It cost HBO about million to produce each episode in the show s previous two seasons. That s pretty crazy when you think about the budgetary restrictions television producers had to work with just a decade ago.Lost featured an ensemble of mostly unknown actors who were cast without a finalized script (which is a head-scratch–worthy detail unto itself). But the characters were instantly iconic and their International diversity became an important component to the story being told as well as the representation it provided for the global audience with which the series ended up connecting. Charlie (Dominic Monaghan) was British, Claire (Emilie de Ravin) was from Australia, Mr. Eko (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) was Nigerian, Sun (Yunjin Kim) and Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) were from South Korea, Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick) was Scottish, and let s not forget the former Iraqi Republican Guard member, Sayid Jarrah (Naveen Andrews).The diverse nature of the cast not only appealed to a global fandom, the characters helped break down preconceived notions regarding citizens from certain parts of the world.(Photo by © ABC/Courtesy Everett Collection)While the majority of Game of Thrones cast may be white (and British), there is a similarity here in the sense that both shows gave their actors celebrity status the world over. Going from barely getting recognized to packing Hall H at Comic-Con is a feat worth recognition.The cinematic style of Lost also put ABC in a spot it wasn t expecting to be in. Suddenly the network, which boasted plenty of reality programs and game shows, was competing with premium cable entertainment like The Sopranos or The Wire. It was a high concept risk that almost never saw the light of day, and once it did ABC scrambled to bring in Lindelof and Cuse to keep the show afloat.Before HBO offered its own standalone streaming service, and before Hulu was a word that even existed, ABC made new episodes of Lost available to watch on its website just one day after broadcast. This type of digital availability of programming wasn t something audiences or networks were used to. But ABC experimented with this early business model. In 2005, as free episodes became available to watch online, the network invested its time in a new means of storytelling: the podcast. With Cuse and Lindelof regularly appearing on the Official Lost Podcast, along with members of the cast, to provide insight to the drama and mysteries as they unfolded, a new means of engaging with fans was born. Lost premiered during a time when Facebook and MySpace were the social networks of choice. The iTunes Store was in its infancy, and it would be a few more years before Twitter launched (and Game of Thrones fans would subsequently harness the platform to discuss episodes in real time). And yet the character drama, intricate puzzles, and island mythology that unfolded on ABC s groundbreaking series connected with audiences on a level unlike ever before.Lindelof and Cuse (or Darlton, as the internet began to call them), helped start the trend of putting showrunners in the spotlight. Before Lost, viewers weren t granted such a peek behind the proverbial curtain. D.B. Weiss and David Benioff became the faces of Game of Thrones like Lindelof and Cuse before them. The actors were no longer the only celebrities in the room.ABC broke ground with Lost, giving us an odd string of numbers, a mysterious hatch, and an island full of possibilities to ponder week in and week out. It was an existential story that plucked heartstrings and inspired wonder. This layered exploration of life vs. death and good vs. evil captured the imaginations of audiences and content creators alike. Once Lost ended, HBO took the mantel with Game of Thrones, further breaking down the barrier of what is possible to achieve on the small screen.Like this?
