5.23.7 0月喜迎And with the second episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the picture of the post-Blip world is coming more clearly into focus. Governments are destabilized, certain parts of the world experienced a taste of peace while half its population was gone, and, seemingly, the US had a plan for Captain America. The episode also offered a number of introductions which seem to lead the mystery away from Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl) and toward an unexpected enemy. So let s dive in and glean what we can from the program s latest episode and what a new truth might mean for Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie).Couples Therapy, and Shipping Sam and Bucky(Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)But before we get into the geopolitical aspects, let s give a few moments to Sam and Bucky s (Sebastian Stan) relationship. Yes, it is totally hetero and totally platonic, but it is interesting the way the Captain America strand of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has used film romance dynamics to charge scenes between Steve (Chris Evans) and his partners.Going by a certain reading of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Bucky is very much Steve s ex while Sam is, essentially, the new boyfriend. By utilizing rom-com dynamics, the film created a great shorthand to understand the emotions involved. And once we get to Bucky and Sam sitting in that old Volkswagen in Captain America: Civil War, their rivalry for Steve s friendship proved to be a great source for comedy. That dynamic only grows stronger as events position them into being a couple.Or, at least a couple in terms of the way the Captain America movies engaged with the romance tropes. Dr. Raynor s (Amy Aquino) choice to immediately employ couples therapy tactics on them not only lampshades that aspect of the dynamic, but plays into the characters discomfort with being a de facto couple. Also, it once again proved to be wildly funny as both Mackie and Stan play off of each other in a truly great way. Whether their dynamic is purely Odd Couple or something more just depends on how intensely you ship them. But all their discomfort does lead to one key point about Bucky: he s worried Steve was wrong about his ability to change. Presumably, this will be Bucky s objective for the rest of the season.Sam Learns About The TruthJoel MearesIn 2003, Marvel released a series called The Truth: Red, White Black. Written by Robert Morales with art from Kyle Baker, it told the story of a parallel Super Soldier program conducted on Black servicemen during World War II. Much like the real-life Tuskegee Experiments, it was conducted under false pretenses and without the explicit consent of the men involved. In the Marvel Universe, the experiment led to the deaths of at least 299 men. The one survivor, Isaiah Bradley, wound up with the full benefits of the Super Soldier Serum. Unfortunately, the wider US government was not so accepting of a Black Captain America and Isaiah was sentenced to life in prison after he went AWOL to destroy a Nazi Super Soldier lab. He is later pardoned and released, but exists as a legend known widely to Black Americans, but to few outside that community. And thanks to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, he s now a part of the MCU in the form of the great Carl Lumbly. His story has been altered somewhat – he is now a Korean War vet – but we think that context is more powerful for the MCU as the mid-20th Century is something of a blank slate for Marvel to work with. On a purely historical front, it s amazing for any modern series to even acknowledge Korea. And by placing Isaiah s story closer to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, the government s disgraceful treatment of him – locking him away for 30 years – becomes just that much starker. At no point during the movement was anyone even aware of Isaiah! Then there s the truth for Sam here: a Black Captain America came into existence in 1951 and only Bucky knew about him. That s a tough fact to process and an indication of what might ve happened had Sam just kept the shield for himself. It is pretty easy to imagine the government burying him (literally) and handing it to John Walker (Wyatt Russell).Considering how easy it was for those Baltimore Police to not recognize the Falcon, the people propping up Walker probably wouldn t have to work too hard to make Sam disappear.Flag Smashers And Power Brokers(Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)Meanwhile, in Europe, we get a better idea of where the Flag-Smashers are coming from. In the wake of the Blip ending, a Global Repatriation Council was formed to help returning people reestablish their lives. According to Walker and Lemar Hoskins (Clé Bennett), this includes reactivating Social Security numbers (for US citizens), setting up healthcare options, and more. We also learn some of the people who were displaced now live in camps. But during the five years half the world s population was gone, people like Karli Morgenthau (Erin Kellyman) experienced a taste of a world without borders, worries of overpopulation, and (we assume) corporate autocracies besides Stark Industries. Reclaiming that version of the world is her stated fight and it s hard to argue with all her points. Some, though, are easier to combat as they sound eerily reminiscent of Thanos s grim calculus. How does one reclaim a world of only 3 billion people except by killing 3 billion undesirables ? That thinking can only lead to something awful. At the same time, the sense of community she seemingly clings to can be scaled to include the returnees – unless, of course, she believes all the world leaders who also returned would object to that. That ambiguity is baked into the character, of course, as she is partially based on Marvel Comics Flag-Smasher, Karl Morgenthau, a Swiss anti-nationalist who came into conflict with Captain America, The Punisher, and even the Red Skull. Though his intentions of a world without nationalistic superiority were noble, his preferred method to further his goal, terrorism, indicated a flaw in his thinking. Cap even told him as much. For the moment, we re going to assume Karli shares this flaw. But that s presuming her stated goal is true. Perhaps the Flag Smashers are just ruse. Her apparent association with Power Broker indicates a much more fluid morality. As the name implies, the Power Broker is a person of means who offers super abilities and assets for personal gain. Curiously, the first version of the character was introduced as a satire of the health and fitness craze emerging in the late 1970s. Some of his schemes revolved around a wrestling promotion for super-powered people. He also ran afoul of John Walker and Lemar Hoskins. But perhaps the most intriguing thing about the Power Broker is his long association with Dr. Karl Malus, a mad scientist interested in the creation and application of superpowers. Is it possible they are the source of the Super Soldier Serum powering the Flag Smashers?Malus previously appeared in the second season of Jessica Jones in the form of Callum Keith Rennie. There, he was one of the IGH scientists involved in the creation of Jessica s (Krysten Ritter) powers and her mother Alisa s (Janet McTeer) more problematic life. Malus presumably committed suicide when he blew up his lab, but as it is still unclear if the events of that series really happened in the MCU, the character could be in play. Or, at the very least, he could have perfected a stable serum variant for the Power Broker before his death.Well, presuming the Power Broker is the source of the serum Karli s using and the person hounding her via text messages. The story seems to be tying these things together, but it is possible they are separate things.Meanwhile, as Bucky notes, the arrival of a stable of Super Soldiers is a definite problem. If Karli got her hands on the serum, is there more out there? If it is in the hands of the Power Broker – for the moment, we re going to assume the series is using the nameless version of the character instead of Curtiss Jackson – they could unleash a terrible force on the world.Or a terrible force for Zemo to control. But we ll consider him more next week.Of Battlestars And U.S. Agents(Photo by © Marvel Studios 2021)As mentioned above, the episode also introduced Lemar Hoskins – aka Battlestar. The character has an interesting behind-the-scenes history which is relevant to the show s running themes. In preparation for John Walker to become Captain America in the comics in 1987, writer Mark Gruenwald decided he needed a Bucky of his own. Already established as a member of the Bold Urban Commandos (BUCs for short), he chose Lemar to become the fifth Bucky and appeared as such for a short while. Eventually, writer Dwayne McDuffie explained to him Buck is a derogatory term for African Americans originating from the days of slavery. The two agreed to rename him Battlestar and a story developed for Lemar to highlight the problem and switch to the new persona. The story also firmly established Lemar as Walker s partner instead of a sidekick.Considering the way The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has highlighted the treatment of Black superheroes thus far, we expect some of Battlestar s history will come into play across the remainder of the season. At the moment, he seems pretty happy to be part of the counterfeit Team Cap, but it is easy to imagine his status could change soon. In the moments we have with him so far, it is unclear if he is Walker s partner or sidekick. Clarifying that role will be key.Of course, some of that depends on what sort of man John Walker turns out to be. For the moment, he seems forthright, but that slight suggestion of territoriality in his last moments with Sam indicates he may not be as noble as Steve. Then again, has any man ever been as noble as Steve? The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premieres new episodes on Fridays on Disney+.On an Apple device? The problem they face, and the one we face on an hourly basis, is the very concept of fairness. But as Karli eludes to in her eulogy to Donya Madani and expressly says to Sam a few minutes later, a part of the fairness she seeks is the peace and prosperity she found in the years of the Blip. Fairness is an equitable share of resources and an unprecedented freedom of movement. It is also means the chance to build things as communities united in a humanist philosophy instead of the old distinctions of race, country, and religion.Sam supports these ideals in theory, but as he missed the Blip years, he cannot really understand what it was like. Like Bucky s limited empathy with Ayo about King T Chaka s death, Sam s understanding of the Blip world falters no matter how many times he tells Karli he gets it. Admittedly, it sounds like a paradise to us, but it comes at an unacceptable cost. And as we now know Karli is willing to commit to the grim calculus, it makes their conversation all the sadder. Then there s that moment when Sam almost gets through to her before Walker bursts in. Now, the only way forward is blood for Karli and Walker.Power Broker Watch: Episode 4 Edition(Photo by Marvel Studios)We presume Sam will try to keep the peace, but like Karli, he will be fighting a war on two fronts. For Karli, that second battle will be with the Power Broker, who will be none too thrilled to learn the remaining serum vials are gone. We still don t know who the Power Broker is, however. Like last week, Sharon is still a possibility. Her free movement through Madripoor, access to satellites, and high-tech command station certainly suggest a level of clout and resources far beyond the picture she gave to Sam last week. It is possible she works for S.H.I.E.L.D. or S.W.O.R.D.; in fact, as The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was meant to stream before WandaVision, Sharon s shadiness may have been meant to lead into the agency s first appearance. Or maybe she really did break bad and fund a new Super Soldier program. A showdown between her and Karli would be unexpected. It is also possible the Power Broker will be the special episode 5 cameo showrunner Malcolm Spellman alluded to in recent days. But after all the digital ink we spilled with WandaVision s supposed cameo, we re unwilling to put a lot of thought into this possibility. If it turns out to be Victor Von Doom or Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell), we ll be pleasantly surprised. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premieres new episodes on Fridays on Disney+.

As The Mandalorian nears the end of its second season, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) must make a difficult choice in his attempt to rescue Grogu. In doing so, he also offers an unlikely opportunity for a former foe. While not as focused on the larger universe as recent episodes, this week once again proved The Mandalorian is more than capable of telling its own tales on its own terms. So let s dive into Chapter 15: The Believer and discover why writer/director Rick Famuyiwa is overdo for his own Star Wars story. The following contains spoilers about The Mandalorian, season 2, episode 7, “Chapter 15: The Believer.” Stop here if you have not watched the episode.Last Week, Grogu Was Baby Yoda–napped(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)Arriving on Tython so Grogu can use Jedi temple ruins to contact a Jedi willing to train him, Djarin encountered Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen). Fett s main concern is the recovery of the armor Djarin took from Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant) and offered to protect the child in exchange for it. Sadly, Fett and Shand s help was not enough to prevent the Imperial Remnant from abducting Grogu. Djarin quickly formed a plan to save him, but it requires the assistance of former Imperial sharpshooter, Mayfeld (Bill Burr).Din Djarin and His Accomplices Use Deadly Force To Hunt Moff Gideon(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)Instead of the prison break last week s episode appeared to tease, Cara Dune (Gina Carano) uses her authority as a New Republic Marshal to secure Mayfeld s release into her custody. As part of Djarin s plan, Mayfeld needs to use his knowledge of Imperial codes and procedures to ascertain the coordinates of Moff Gideon s (Giancarlo Esposito) light cruiser. Once he hears Grogu s life is in the balance, Mayfeld agrees to assist. Needing direct access to an Imperial terminal, he suggests setting course for the secret mining operation on Morak.Once on the planet, Hess and Djarin disguise themselves as Shoretroopers to infiltrate a refinery for highly-volatile mineral rhydonium. When attempting to access an Imperial network in the mess hall with the terminal, Mayfeld backs out after noting Valin Hess (Richard Brake) among the officers. The two have history. Desperate to find Grogu, Djarin removes his helmet so the terminal can complete a facial scan. Unfortunately, all of their mucking about attracts the attention of Hess, but the Imperial officer only wants to congratulate them, as they were the only transport team to make it back to base. Things turn sour when Mayfeld darkly reminisces about the Burnin Konn engagement of Operation: Cinder, a mission which led to the deaths of roughly 10,000 troopers. When Hess dismisses the losses, Mayfeld shoots him.The resulting firefight leads to Hess and Djarin s escape, thanks to timely assists by Dune, Shand, and Fett. Djarin recovers his armor and Dune decides to let Mayfeld go after seeing him hit one of the rhydonium transports from the Slave I hatch and blowing up the entire Imperial base.Leaving Mayfeld on Morak, Djarin sends a message to Gideon declaring war.A Change of a Hardened Heart Suggests Imperial Goons Are Not All Created Equally(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)Mayfeld s reappearance here is a surprising change from his more villainous debut last season in Chapter 6, The Prisoner — also directed by Famuyiwa. It is, nevertheless, a welcome change as Mayfeld shows a hidden depth under his quips. Concern for the loss of life is not a quality the Empire or the Remnant values, and this growing concern was clearly a key reason Mayfeld walked away from the Imps after Burnin Konn.As it happens, Operation: Cinder was part of Sheev Palaptine s contingency plan to cripple the galaxy — Rebels and Imperials alike — should he ever perish. While on its face, it was meant to bring ecological devastation to world like Naboo and Burnin Konn, the high casualty counts were also part of the design. It is doubtful Hess or Mayfeld knew the real reasons for the operation, though, or the other aspects of Palpatine s plan, the retreat of certain Imperial forces to the Unknown Regions.Nevertheless, their reactions here illustrates a distinct difference in character. Hess is a true believer in the Empire s definition of order, while Mayfeld was probably a conditional Imp at best. As seen in Solo: A Star Wars Story and intimated by Luke Skywalker s desire to leave Tatooine, people joined the Imperial military because they are out of options. Typically, the training crushes a person s spirit and turns them into loyal goons like Hess, but sometimes a moral center survives. It is clearly the point of Famuyiwa s script as Mayfeld proved to be more honorable than the other characters he introduced in Chapter 6: The Prisoner. It also suggests Famuyiwa has a longer-form Star Wars story of his own to tell. His directorial debut in the galaxy, Chapter 2: The Child, was a fabulous self-contained adventure seemingly inspired by the simple question What if Boba Fett fought Jawas? Chapter 6, his debut as a writer (with Christopher Yost), continued with the seemingly one-off stories, while introducing a compelling set of miscreants, Mayfeld included. While it is possible he will stay on Morak to help the indigenous population fend off Imps and pirates — a worthy conclusion to his tale — it is also possible Famuyiwa has found a way to highlight the struggles of more common people caught between the never-ending conflicts in the galaxy. And with Star Wars expanding its television footprint to 19 series(!) in the next few years, we have to wonder if Famuyiwa will apply his craft to, say, Rangers of the New Republic. He is a great a filmmaker, and it s clear he can do great things in the Star Wars format, so we think it is time to set him loose on a series or a feature film. He is more than capable.Although, considering Dune declared Mayfeld dead while letting him go, we also have to wonder if he will have to dodge those Rangers in the upcoming series or befriend them.Questioning The Remnant(Photo by © 2020 Lucasfilm Ltd. ™. All Rights Reserved.)While we ponder Mayfeld s future in New Republic space, we also have to consider the Remnant s place in all of this.Is Another Operation: Cinder Afoot? While Palpatine s contingency plans were meant to cripple the Remnant and the New Republic in short order, both factions endured. Is the chaos Hess said would soon happen part of another contingency? The forces that will become the First Order and the Final Order are already ensconced in the Unknown Regions by this point, so sacrificing more Imps to hobble the New Republic feels on-point for the Sith Lord. Provided he s still issuing commands in his bizarre afterlife, of course. What Is The Remnant s Command Structure? Expanding on a question we ve asked before, it is still unclear if these Imperial Remnant enclaves are working in concert or independently of one another. In the Star Wars: Battlefield II campaign, directives regarding Operation: Cinder and other aspects of Palpatine s contingency are delivered to high ranking Imps via prerecorded holo-messages from the Emperor himself. The secrecy involved suggests Palpatine may have encouraged Remnant forces to splinter as part of the plan to cripple anyone not in the Unknown Regions. At the same time, it is possible Gideon united the factions into one organized Remnant. But even if that is the case, it still leaves us to wonder if Gideon is working at Palpatine s behest or for his own ambitions. How Strong Is the ISB? The Imperial Security Bureau definitely gives our heroes pause, but its strength only seems to extend to Remnant controlled zones or specific operations directed by Gideon, himself a former ISB operative. Is the ISB a credible threat? If so, why did the ISB lose track of Djarin and Grogu following the events on Nevarro last season? Why Did the Terminal Recognize Djarin s Face? From Mayfeld s explanation of the terminal system, we expected the facial scan to be another layer of the verification process. If that is true, why did it recognize Djarin s face? The simplest explanation, of course, is that the scan is just a simple logging system instead of a security function. Which may mean Gideon will use the record of the Mandalorian s face against him. Will Djarin Really Carry On Under the Helmet? Although all the Imps who saw his face are dead and Mayfeld choose to ignore what he saw, we can t help but wonder how Djarin can continue to wear the armor after being seen. On the one hand, he s seen plenty of Mandos this season who do not live by the Way of the Mandalore. On the other, he s still a religious zealot who has yet to reconcile the Way with the evidence of his own eyes. Perhaps, like Mayfeld said, Djarin will do what he must to get Grogu back and, after retrieving him, will leave the armor with Boba Fett; in fact, that feels like the right note to end the season on. We ll know soon enough, though, as next week is the season finale. The Mandalorian streams on Disney+.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

Ghcxuf Beyond the Black Rainbow (2011) 61% First off, come on  Beyond the Black Rainbow? That s a killer title for any movie. This is the feature debut of director Panos Cosmatos, the man who successfully harnessed the power of Nic Cage and wowed the critics earlier this year with Mandy. Black Rainbow is decidedly less focused than that movie it plays more like an experimental exercise in moods and visuals but the same singular, inscrutable weirdness that split the critics is also what makes it unforgettable. The story, as it were, centers on a young woman with telekinetic powers who is held against her will in a research facility and undergoes treatment from a doctor harboring secrets of his own. Pretty standard stuff so far, even if the vaguely retrofuturistic setting and ominous synth score do a lot to set an appropriately sinister tone. But then the movie takes a pretty sharp left turn with an acid trip of a flashback, and things go really off the rails. Is it all effective? Not exactly; its story does meander a bit, and it feels a little self-indulgent from time to time. But it is extremely pretty to look at; it s one of those movies you can play in the background of a house party, just because it s chock full of fantastic imagery. And it s so good at evoking a specific sort of existential dread that you ll swear you ve dozed off and stepped into a 1980s nightmare. It s not the scariest movie out there, but it s icky, unsettling, and good for a shock or two. 😈😈

亚博全站官方下载 Hans Zimmer is one of just a handful of working movie music composers who can genuinely be called a household name. And no wonder: German-born Zimmer created the memorable scores for movies like Gladiator, The Dark Knight, and – Bwoaaaah! – Inception. Perhaps most famously, he composed the music for Disney s The Lion King, which was the first animated feature he had worked on (he would go on to compose scores for The Prince of Egypt, Madagascar, and more). Working closely with Lebo M., the South African artist whose voice many will know from the The Lion King s iconic opening chant, Zimmer created music for the Disney classic that terrified us as wildebeest stampeded through a canyon and moved us as a young lion stared at his own reflection and discovered a king staring back at him. It also nabbed him his first, and so far only, Academy Award. Zimmer recently returned to the story of Simba, Mufasa, Nala, and the rest of the Pride Lands characters for Jon Favreau s new take on The Lion King. Here Zimmer reveals what drew him back to the story, why he hesitated at first, and what s changed in the 25 years since the animated film s release.Joel Meares for Rotten Tomatoes: Someone I saw this movie with turned to me at the beginning and said, If I don t cry during the stampede, it will mean Hans hasn t done his job.” When I saw her at the end, she was bawling. So, I wanted to know how did you approach that particular scene the second time around?Hans Zimmer: Cautiously. If you think that was a dangerous comment, my oldest daughter who I d written the original movie s [music] for in the first place 25 years ago, she was still saying to me, Dad, you better not make a mess of this one. All the themes that I wrote all those years ago – I didn t know how to do animation [at the time] – so all the themes are slightly too epic and slightly too big, and they needed that little bit more space and that little bit more breath to really resonate. I mean, especially the stampede and its aftermath, I can t even put into words, you know, the benefit from having more space. More breathing room. More chance to battle. More chance to focus on the protagonist. More chance to focusing on the story.(Photo by ©Buena Vista Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection)Rotten Tomatoes: You said that your daughter said, Don t make of a mess of it. Did you yourself have any personal hesitation about coming back to a project that you haven t worked on for a very long time and that was so beloved – and was kind of perfect already?Zimmer: Well, “kind of perfect,” I never think about things like that. But “loved,” yes. I had a very short conversation with Jon [Favreau], which basically went him saying, Come down, let me show you something. And that was 100 percent committing. I went down. He put me in a black room, showed me [footage of the film’s opening]. It completely and utterly surprised me and moved me, even though I sort of knew what to expect. And we look at it differently than we looked at it 25 years ago. I mean, we truly do. I ve spent now quite a bit of time working with Sir David Attenborough. So partly, I was looking at it from the sense of where s the world heading? It felt like I was on a slightly different mission. It was, even if the story is the same, the world has changed, so the meaning of the story has changed.Rotten Tomatoes: In terms of what was practically involved with producing the score, how did you approach it differently from the first time? Zimmer: In the last 30 years… Usually, I never leave a dark windowless room, but eventually I did, and eventually I got onto a stage, and eventually I – despite stage fright – I started playing things live. And I did Lion King at the Coachella festival, and performing it, and watching the reaction of an audience and performing it, it was like these amazing musicians that I now have access to, made me realize that this isn t a normal film score. We can do this as a performance. In a normal film score, the orchestra or the players never know why they are playing the notes, because they don t know the story. Everybody knew the story [this time]. So I managed to get a commitment that was just extraordinary, and the performance, and I made it all about the performance. I think for a movie that relies that much on technology, there s a sense of improvisation and a sense of performance in this movie, far more than the original one. And a sense of humanity in the story. Everything is slightly paradox, but I think that s what gives it its great strength.(Photo by Courtesy Everett Collection)Rotten Tomatoes: And so you performed everything on the score live with an orchestra?Zimmer: Yeah. I mean, I said to Jon and everybody at Disney, Can I do this? Can I try this experiment?” You know, I had 102 people in the room. We re just going to rehearse. We re just really going to get it under our fingers, and then we re just going to go and do the whole movie for a couple of days. And don t worry about wrong notes. Next time around, we ll probably figure it out. It truly was exciting. And that s what I was trying to do, is get the authenticity of really hearing the musicians.Rotten Tomatoes: When you originally wrote the music for the stampede scene, the track To Die For in the original and new score, were you drawing from compositions or scores that you had heard before? What inspired the musical moment there?Zimmer: Not really. I mean, I ll tell you what I did draw from. It s just my childhood memories of listening to Mozart. It s like I was always slightly worried about this idea that as a German, you re sort of pillaging the culture of Africa. So one of the things I did on the first one, and I ve before with Lebo M., it s like I kept saying, I m a German, so I m going to write with a German accent, just the way we re speaking now. And let me go and take this into Africa and give it to Africa, and let them just respond with their culture, and see what happens where the two cultures collide, if another new thing can come out of it. So I think that s really part of the strength of the score.(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Rotten Tomatoes: What was it like to work with Lebo M. again on the score? Had you worked together much in the intervening years?Zimmer: Yes. We had worked on a couple of movies nobody went to see (, and we did touring together. Africa s always been important to this world, and at the same time, it s like it needs more respect. It needs more love. And Lebo s been touring with me, so we have been doing Lion King, bits and pieces of it live. Yes, we ve been comrades in arms for a long time, you know? And he s been sort of the guardian of the musical. Because he s really great at casting this thing. That sort of stuff. He s been looking after our legacy in a much more profound way than I have. So, your daughter: Has she seen the film? Did she say whether you screwed it up?Zimmer: No, but there is something which has puzzled everybody at Disney. They let me have a lot of tickets for the London premiere, and I sent them all back, and I said, I only want two tickets, because I want it to be a father-daughter date.  I hope she s still going to be speaking to me afterwards. Simple as that. But it s just going to be the two of us.Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week. The Lion King is in theaters July 19.

Another Disney animated feature has been reimagined in live-action form: Mulan revisits the studio’s 1998 version of a Chinese legend about a young woman posing as a young man in order to join her nation’s war against invaders. The new movie, which is going straight to Disney+, is mostly worth seeing for its visuals alone, according to the first batch of reviews. Critics are mixed on whether it’s a great adaptation, let alone better than the original, and there are disagreements on the performances, but most reviews praise the cinematography, the martial arts choreography, and the direction from Niki Caro. Here’s what critics are saying about Mulan:Is this one of the better Disney remakes?Mulan is the best of the live-action remakes so far.  Kaitlyn Booth, Bleeding Cool[It] knocks previous remakes of beloved Disney animated classics off their magic carpets…. thus far, Mulan is simply the best.  Nancy Wang Yuen, io9Easily one of Disney’s best live-action adaptations of their own animated catalog that unquestionably justifies its existence.  Rodrigo Perez, The PlaylistIt’s easily one of their most accomplished and affecting efforts to date.  Rob Hunter, Film School RejectsDoes it improve on the original?Unlike so many of these re-imaginings from Disney, nearly every aspect of this live-action rendition is an enhancement from its predecessor. Don Shanahan, 25YLI’ll admit I like this version of Mulan more than the cartoon one. There’s no silly talking animal sidekicks or concessions to a kiddie audience. Christopher Lloyd, The Film YapMulan manages to stand apart as its own thing. However, it still lacks a bit of the spirit that made the original film special. Adriana Gomez-Weston, The Cinema SoloistWith a longer run time and facing challenges in the storyline’s delivery, it feels a little like a dulled facsimile of a crisp original. Courtney Howard, Fresh Fiction(Photo by Jasin Boland/© 2020 Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved.)Will fans be upset about the changes?Characters recite entire lyrics in scenes from which songs have been removed. While those lines might sound natural when sung, they’re clunky when spoken. Karen Han, PolygonI had no realization of how much those catchy tunes were deeply rooted in character development and story building until they were erased. Christie Cronan, Raising Whasians[It’s] a bit of a shame, frankly: The stiffly earnest script could have used a little more showbiz pizzazz. Justin Chang, NPRYou can t say it s not trying to do something new. And some of what it s doing works quite well. Angie Han, MashableHow is the humor?Humor was such an intricate part of the animated movie… but there was not one moment where I laughed in this film. Christie Cronan, Raising WhasiansNone of the few comedic beats work. The action is so cartoonish that a bit of humor would’ve gone a long way. Rendy Jones, Rendy ReviewsMulan is serious verging on dour, so bent on presenting itself as a serious war drama that its rare moments of comedy feel almost awkwardly slotted in. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmWhat about the action?Mulan is a film bolstered by a series of jaw-dropping, wuxia-inflected fighting sequences that are genuinely thrilling… a true action epic. Kate Erbland, IndieWireSome of the early wire-work seems a bit janky, but like Mulan herself, it finds its footing in battle and thrilling action set-pieces. Rob Hunter, Film School RejectsThe wuxia-inspired action sequences are unlike anything we ve seen in other Disney blockbusters, and add a touch of unpredictability to an otherwise staid picture. Angie Han, MashableToo much parkour-type stuff for my taste, but I’m impressed by the sheer scale of the choreography and pageantry, which is positively Kurosawa-esque at times. Christopher Lloyd, The Film Yap(Photo by Jasin Boland/© 2020 Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved.)So it s a visual treat?Mulan is never not a delight for the eyes — it wouldn’t even occur to the film to stop stunning. Inkoo Kang, Hollywood ReporterFrom start to finish, Mulan is a visual feast. One of the most stunningly crafted films this year… no expense was spared in the visual impact of the film. Adriana Gomez-Weston, The Cinema SoloistThe filmmakers utilize stunning exterior locations and fill them with grand battles and expertly staged fight sequences, turning to CGI as tasteful embellishments rather than relying on them. Edwin Arnaudin, Asheville MoviesI cannot get over how all of these stunning visuals included 100% real Asian represented people on screen.. it’s a childhood dream come true. Christie Cronan, Raising WhasiansIf there’s any saving grace, it’s Caro’s direction, which binds together a disjointed script into one gorgeous spectacle of a film. Hoai-Tran Bui, SlashfilmHow is Liu Yifei in the lead?Liu Yifei truly shines as the iconic titular character… she’s a talented actress who carries the film with grace and resilience. She’s also super badass. Rendy Jones, Rendy ReviewsLiu Yifei is superb as Mulan… it s now impossible to imagine anyone else managing to do better with this role. Josh Wilding, ComicBookMovie.comLiu distinctively brings out her tough character’s subtle, softer notes of grace, gumption and vulnerability. She’s a magnetic dynamo with impressive dexterity. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionLiu has enough charisma for a lead performance, but the script gives her no depth and no meaningful relationships to work with. Inkoo Kang, Hollywood ReporterLiu’s performance is a bit flat and emotionally vacant. Christopher Lloyd, The Film YapHer performance doesn’t offer any of the internality that is required to convey Mulan’s greatest conflict: her turmoil at not being true. Hoai-Tran Bui, Slashfilm(Photo by © 2020 Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved.)And the villains?Lee and Gong Li are the stand-outs in the cast. But then, villains are always more fun. Roger Moore, Movie NationThe weak point, unfortunately, is Jason Scott Lee s big bad, Bori Khan. He s just a bad guy, with somewhat underwhelming and basic motivations, nothing that really makes him stand out. Josh Wilding, ComicBookMovie.comSplitting the villain in two complicates matters further as both need motives… neither improves upon Shan Yu’s desire to take the Emperor’s throne in the 1998 version. Michael J. Casey, Boulder WeeklyIs Gong Li s character a worthy addition? She is an addition that enhances the movie… her powers are very well presented on screen, and she is a lot of fun to watch. Kaitlyn Booth, Bleeding CoolHer tenuous physical and psychological struggles to assert her independence from a maniacal tyrant are far more fascinating than seeing the protagonist who’s 《英雄联盟手游》上线即是巅峰,能够收获如此热度,靠的不仅仅是《英雄联盟》这个大IP的加持,还离不开游戏本身极高的品质,在游戏质量和玩家口碑的双重加持下,LOL手游将会收获更高的成就,成为真正的全球爆款手游。
