This Week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering new films from the Academy Award nominated directors of Black Swan and American Hustle, and more. This WEEK S TOP STORYCHRIS EVANS TO RETURN TO THE MCU, BUT HOW?(Photo by Jay Maidment/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)When it comes to big-budget superhero movies, press releases will frequently keep some details hidden or vague in the interest of not spoiling the film s premise or story beats. This week s big news, however, was possibly a rare example of film speculation run amok. Let s start with the baseline story, which is that Chris Evans is expected to return for at least one more Marvel Studios film after ostensibly leaving the role of Captain America in Avengers: Endgame (Certified Fresh at 94%). Most sources reporting the announcement filled in the blanks to assume Evans was returning as Steve Rogers, but the original story didn t actually say that. The other possibility to consider is that Evans could be reprising his role as Fantastic Four member Johnny Storm, A.K.A. The Human Torch, possibly in a small cameo role. Kevin Feige confirmed just a few weeks ago that he is currently casting the Fantastic Four reboot, and we ve also heard recently about the next Spider-Man movie bringing in actors who played villains in the Spider-Man movies starring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. So, it seems plausible that alternate realities or a multiverse could be at play in the future of the MCU, and Chris Evans could have a cameo as someone other than Captain America (it would also explain why Evans tweeted News to me in response to the Captain America speculation). Having said that, if Evans is returning as Captain America, the obvious explanation would involve time travel. We already know from the Loki trailer and the casting of Jonathan Majors as the time-traveling villain Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania that the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will likely feature be very wibbly wobbly timey wimey. We ll just have to wait and see.Other Top Headlines1. ROBERT DE NIRO, RAMI MALEK, CHRIS ROCK, ZOE SALDANA, ANYA TAYLOR-JOY JOIN BIG ENSEMBLE(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Jason Mendez/Everett Collection)Director David O. Russell doesn t always work with big ensemble casts filled with famous names, but he definitely has done it a few times (American Hustle and I Heart Huckabees, for example). We still don t have a title for his next film yet, which has already signed Christian Bale, Margot  Robbie, and Tenet star John David Washington. The cast expanded twice this week, starting on Wednesday with the news that Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) and Zoe Saldana (Marvel s Gamora) had signed on. The very next day, the cast grew even bigger with the additions of Robert De Niro, Mike Myers, Alessandro Nivola, Timothy Olyphant, Andrea Riseborough, Chris Rock, Matthias Shoenaerts, Michael Shannon, and Anya-Taylor Joy (The Witch, The Queen s Gambit). The project is currently filming in Los Angeles, but details are being kept vague as to what it s actually about, except that Christian Bale and Margot Robbie are playing a doctor and a lawyer (not necessarily respectively). Whatever the movie ends up being titled, the end result will be distributed by 20th Century Studios, possibly as a late 2021 awards season release.2. DARREN ARONOFSKY CASTS BRENDAN FRASER AS THE WHALE (Photo by ©Lionsgate)After taking a few years following his most recent film, 2017 s mother! (Fresh at 68%), director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, Black Swan) appears to be getting closer to filming his next, an adaptation of the 2012 play The Whale by playwright Samuel D. Hunter. For the lead role, Aronofsky has cast Brendan Fraser to play a six hundred pound recluse hiding away from the world and slowly eating himself to death. A24 will be distributing The Whale, but the project does not currently have an announced production start date, so we don t have a firm idea of when it might be released, either.3. BEN AFFLECK JOINS DISNEY TO DIRECT KEEPER OF THE LOST CITIES (Photo by Universal Pictures)Author Shannon Messenger s 2012 children s fantasy novel Keeper of the Lost Cities has become a series of nine books (and counting), including a few New York Times bestsellers. Walt Disney Pictures obviously hasn t gotten out of the live-action fantasy movie business, but aside from something like Artemis Fowl, many of their films in that zone lately have been remakes of their animated classics. In that light, it makes total sense that Disney is moving forward with a Keeper of the Lost Cities movie, but what s more surprising is that it s Ben Affleck (Argo, Certified Fresh at 96%) who they ve hired to direct and co-write the adaptation. Studio-wise, the hiring of Ben Affleck is sort of a get for Disney, since he has worked quite a bit for Warner Bros. in recent years, including appearance in a few recent movies (and an upcoming HBO Max mini-series) as Batman.4. THE GOOD WIFE WRITER TAKING ON SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN BIOPIC  (Photo by Robert Spencer/Getty Images)This coming August 25th will mark the third anniversary of the death of U.S. Senator John McCain, whose other accomplishments include surviving five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam and his two campaigns for president in 2000 and 2008. McCain s life has been detailed in a number of books, and this week, three of them (The Luckiest Man: Life with John McCain, Faith of My Fathers, and Worth the Fighting For) written by former McCain speechwriter and chief of staff Mark Salter were optioned by Stampede Ventures to be adapted into a bigraphical feature film. Stampede Ventures is also the production company currently developing Frosty the Snowman starring Jason Momoa and the Walter Cronkite drama Newsflash. Salter will also co-write the adaptation with producer Craig Turk (TV s The Good Wife, F.B.I.), with McCain s widow Cindy McCain acting as the project s executive producer. Faith of My Fathers was adapted as a TV movie in 2005 with John McCain portrayed by Shawn Hatosy, and Ed Harris also co-starred as McCain in the HBO film Game Change (Fresh at 67%).5. FIRST FEMALE DIRECTOR ALICE GUY-BLACHÉ GETTING HER OWN BIOPIC (Photo by Everett Collection)We recently started a new year, which also could have offered a good jumping off point for the #52FilmsbyWomen challenge, during which movie fans commit to watching at least one movie from a female director every week for a full year. Although male directors ha obviously dominated the industry for much of the last 120+ years, the very first female film director, Alice Guy-Blaché, made her debut in 1896 with the short film The Fairy of the Cabbages (note: in 1896, all movies were short films). The life of Alice Guy-Blaché is now being developed as a biopic from the same filmmakers who also adapted her life story as the 2018 documentary Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blaché (Certified Fresh at 95%). At the time a secretary for the Gaumont studio, Guy-Blaché was actually in the room when the Lumiere Brothers held their very first public screening in 1895, and within a year she was making her own movies. This eventually led her to America, where she directed over 1,000 short films during the Silent Film Era, working with stars like Lionel and Ethel Barrymore. Jodie Foster narrated the Be Natural documentary, but it s not yet known if she will also be involved with the biopic.6. CARDI B TO MAKE HER LEAD ACTING DEBUT WITH ASSISTED LIVING (Photo by Stephane Cardinale - Corbis/Getty Images)Rapper and pop star Cardi B has had a lot of success in her musical career, but it has been less than three years since her first studio album came out, and only 16 months since she made her feature film acting debut in Hustlers (Certified Fresh at 87%), starring Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu (admittedly, Cardi B s screentime in Hustlers is almost blink-and-you ll-miss-her). With all that in mind, she s ready to take on a lead role, as she is now signed to star in a Paramount Pictures comedy in the vein of classic funny films like Tootsie, Sister Act, and Mrs. Doubtfire called Assisted Living. Cardi B will play a small-time crook on the run from the law who finds refuge disguising herself as an elderly resident at her grandmother s nursing home. Assisted Living got its start at Paramount as a spec script by TV producer and writer Kay Oyegun (This is Us). Cardi B will also have a supporting role in Fast Furious 9 (5/28/2021, tentatively).7. ANNA PAQUIN JOINS SHAZAM! STAR IN FOOTBALL BIOPIC AMERICAN UNDERDOG (Photo by Jason Smith/Everett Collection)One of the last films to have a wide release in the USA in 2020 before COVID-19 shut down theaters was the faith-based romance I Still Believe (Rotten at 51%), which still managed to earn back its production budget (.4 million against million). That film was the first from a new faith-based production company called Kingdom Story Company, and their second and third movies will both feature Shazam! star Zachary Levi. The teen drama Unbreakable Boy is currently filming, and production will soon start on the football biopic American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story. Zachary Levi will star as Warner, who overcame a series of hurdles (including having the bad luck of trying out for the QB job for the Green Bay Packers early in Brett Favre s career) to become the only person inducted into both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Arena Football Hall of Fame. The news this week is that True Blood and The Piano star Anna Paquin has also signed on to co-star as Brenda Warner, Kurt Warner s wife. American Underdog will be directed by Andrew and Jon Erwin (who also directed I Still Believe) and the film will be distributed by Lionsgate.8. MICHAEL PEÑA JOINS ROLAND EMMERICH S DISASTER MOVIE MOONFALL(Photo by @ Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)After trying a few other genres (Anonymous, Stonewall), disaster movie specialist Roland Emmerich has been getting back to his roots more recently (Independence Day: Resurgence and the war movie Midway), and will especially do so with Moonfall, which is about exactly what it sounds like. The Moonfall ensemble cast will include Halle Berry, Charlie Plummer, Donald Sutherland, Patrick Wilson, John Bradley (Samwell Tarley from Game of Thrones), and until this week, Transformers star Stanley Tucci. Tucci had to drop out of the production due to recently imposed travel restrictions preventing him from flying from the U.K. to Canada where the film is being produced. Instead, Ant-Man MVP supporting actor Michael Peña has signed on for Tucci s role as a a wealthy car dealer who is married to the ex-wife of Patrick Wilson s character. Presumably, some of those used cars are about to get demolished by some big old moon rocks.9. ARMIE HAMMER DROPS OUT OF J.LO ROMCOM SHOTGUN WEDDING (Photo by Daniel Smith/Warner Bros.)Armie Hammer became the focus of an online controversy this week, the nature of which we won t get into. The news came out just before Hammer was about to spend four months in the Dominican Republic filming the romantic comedy Shotgun Wedding with Jennifer Lopez, but the production will now need to recast the role, as he has dropped out. This will actually be the second time the role will be recast, as it was originally supposed to be played by Ryan Reynolds (who is still executive producing Shotgun Wedding). Lopez and whoever-replaces-Armie-Hammer will star in Shotgun Wedding as a couple having a destination wedding in the Caribbean who then begin to get cold feet, just as everybody in the wedding party also gets taken hostage. Shotgun Wedding will be directed by Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect, Sisters) from a screenplay by Liz Meriwether (No Strings Attached) and Mark Hammer (Two Night Stand), who as far as we can tell, isn t related to Armie Hammer. On an Apple device? The odds were stacked against German sci-fi mystery series Dark, even though it boasts both a 94% average Tomatometer score and a 94% Audience Score. After all, it had to overcome challenges from The Crown, Mindhunter, and Peaky Blinders just to advance to the championship round. On the other hand, Black Mirror only narrowly defeated Stranger Things in the semifinal round, and with its cultural impact, one would have imagined it would pose a greater challenge to Dark than it did. In the end, Dark won the match-up by an avalanche, securing 80% of the votes. As always, thanks to everyone who voted in each round and rallied your friends and neighbors to participate we tallied over 2.5 million votes across all of the match-ups! 3. 激战团竞模式
For 2021, DC FanDome was a nearly four-hour livestream updating fans on the latest DC films, TV series, comics projects, and video games. Even just watching it for the film and TV content was a task worthy of Earth’s Mightiest Mortal, and categorizing the announcements is the sort of thing you might set Brainiac 5 to do. Nevertheless, we tried to live up to Shazam and Brainy, watching all of it and compiling everything related to film and television at DC FanDome 2021 from the look of Blue Beetle’s costume to Ace the Bat-Hound’s drinking habits. To say there is a lot of DC Entertainment material on the horizon is an understatement. Just take a look at what we learned:DC’s Film Roster Is Amazing: The Flash, Black Adam, And The Batman (Oh My!)DC Entertainment made a big push with its feature film slate this time around. With two films shooting, one completing production, and two in pre-production, there was a lot to talk about even if only The Batman had a proper trailer to unveil during the event.FanDome began with a look at Black Adam, featuring a scene of the title character (played by Dwayne Johnson) being awakened from millennia of slumber by archeologist Adrianna Tomaz (Sarah Shahi). Of course, her team of explorers came with an armed detachment, so bullets start flying and Adam calls down the lightning. Literally. Combined with some behind-the-scenes footage, it at least confirms that the film – in development for over a decade – will actually come out next year.Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom also offered some behind-the-scenes footage and a first-look at Black Manta’s (Yahya Abdul-Manteen II) upgraded costume. Eagle-eyed viewers also spotted a black variant of Arthur’s (Jason Momoa) classic costume. Shazam: Fury of the Gods also unveiled a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel with co-star Asher Angel confirming the end of principal photography. The film sees Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu playing goddesses arriving in Philadelphia to tangle with the Shazam Family. It s due out in 2023.(Photo by DC)Over on the HBO Max side of things, the principal creatives and stars of Batgirl and Blue Beetle offered the briefest of teases, including design art of the title characters’ respective costumes and a broad sense of what the films will be. Batgirl star Leslie Grace said the character is a “girly girl, but she’s capable and strong and determined… She’s sincere and wants to prove herself.” Co-director Adil El Arbi also confirmed the character will have red hair and use a cowl as part of her outfit (some recent Batgirl costumes favor goggles instead).“It’s going to be crazy, but it also has feelings,” Blue Beetle screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer said of the project. “It contains all that’s great about Blue Beetle.” Things like the scarab, Jaime Rodriguez’s (Xolo Maridueña) costume, and his family were referenced as key elements Dunnet-Alcocer and director Angel Manuel Soto wanted to bring to the screen. “He’s a Mexican-American kid who wants to be a part of this world, but he’s hitting the same obstacles a lot of us face,” the screenwriter said. He also added that the closeness of family is part of what sets him apart” from other superheroes – noting he has no way of keeping his suit or powers a secret from his parents.(Photo by DC)And as for the suit? “I know for a fact we have the best suit, and I haven’t seen it yet,” Maridueña said. There is one animated feature on the roster, DC League of Superpets, which sees Johnson giving voice to Krypto the Superdog while Kevin Hart voices Ace the Bat-Hound. In a brief clip, Ace can be seen, well, relieving himself while Krypto looks on in dismay. The film will also feature the voices of Kate McKinnon, John Krasinski, Vanessa Bayer, Natasha Lyonne, Diego Luna, and Keanu Reeves. It is set for release on May 20, 2022.(Photo by DC)But perhaps the most impactful presentation outside of The Batman trailer was the first-look at The Flash. The long-in-development film which has missed half-a-dozen release dates at this point – genuinely looks amazing from the footage director Andy Muschietti compiled for FanDome. For one thing, Barry’s (Ezra Miller) new suit(s) looks incredible, and the teases of Supergirl (Sasha Calle), Batman (Micheal Keaton), and a second Flash (also Miller) provided some of the best moments of the whole four-hour event. Capping it off: a shot of Barry examining the Batmobile as it hides under a tarp.Curiously, though, director Patty Jenkins offered no updates on Wonder Woman 3 while chatting with Lynda Carter about the character s 80th anniversary, other than to reconfirm she is working on it.HBO Max Is The New Center Of The DC MultiverseIf there’s one thing this year’s FanDome made clear, it is that HBO Max is the new hubworld for DC’s expansive multiverse. Beyond Batgirl and Blue Beetle’s eventual debuts on the service, Pennyworth – previously an Epix exclusive – will be moving to Max for its third season late in 2022. The previous two seasons will become available to subscribers early next year.Additionally, most of the DC Universe orphans Max adopted  Titans, Doom Patrol, and Harley Quinn  will return for subsequent seasons next year with fourth seasons of Titans and Doom Patrol confirmed at the event. Harley Quinn will return “sometime in 2022,” according to Harley (Kaley Cuoco) herself. The last of the rescued DC Universe shows, Young Justice, debuted two episodes of its fourth season (subtitled “Phantoms ) on Max immediately after FanDome concluded. If all of those shows weren’t enough, Peacemaker’s premiere date was also announced during FanDome: January 13, 2022. Creator James Gunn also unveiled a teaser trailer which suggests Peacemaker (John Cena) may actually grow a little on his next adventure. That said, the star said the hardest part of playing the character is “becoming a super a hole. I’m usually a regular a hole.” Gunn wrote all eight episodes and directed five, extending his time in the DC Multiverse. In fact, Cena expressed a wish to continue playing Peacemaker in subsequent seasons, which may mean more of Gunn’s sensibility in the future.Although HBO Max’s focus is on the DC superheroes, it will also be the home of DMZ, a four-part limited series based on a comic published by DC Comics now-defunct Vertigo imprint. Ava DuVernay directs Roberto Patino’s adaptation of the book, which stars Rosario Dawson as an outsider who may tip the scales in the US’s second civil war.But for all the hour-long live action DC shows calling HBO Max home, Green Lantern was conspicuously absent from FanDome. The program, from Arrowverse mastermind Greg Berlanti, is set to star Jeremy Irvine as Golden Age Green Lantern Alan Scott and Finn Wittrock as 1980s fan-favorite Guy Gardner and sees the characters in their respective time periods facing social issues and weird space threats. Also absent: Berlanti’s Strange Adventures anthology series, first announced at HBO Max’s initial public unveiling, and any mention of J.J. Abrams’ live-action projects.Batman: The Animated Series Is Getting A Spiritual Successor(Photo by Everett Collection)One project Abrams did promote, though, is the upcoming Batman: Caped Crusader. Produced and developed by Abrams, Batman: The Animated Series’ Bruce Timm, long time DC animation executive producer James Tucker, and The Batman director Matt Reeves, the series will go back to what Timm called the “original principles” of Batman: TAS with fewer broadcast restrictions. Set in the early days of Batman’s war on crime, it will feature a version of the character who uses Bruce Wayne as a mask to hide his activities as the Caped Crusader.“It’s just Batman,” added Reeves. “No Justice League.”And because the series takes place so early on in his career, animated Batman audiences will see him in a lower-tech situation than usual. According to Tucker, “We find him discovering these things.” That means viewers may see several iterations of the Batmobile and, quite possibly, the trial-and-error involved in creating Batarangs. Tucker added that as the series begins, no one trusts the Batman and vice-versa. He also teased that some of the Dark Knight’s traditional relationships may not form. “Nothing is assumed in this series,” he said.Reeves and Timm agreed the series will lean heavily in to the 1940s noir style, but the characters will be more modern in terms of inclusivity. Timm also added that the program will be, overall “more Batman: The Animated Series than Batman: The Animated Series.” It is unclear when the series will debut, but it will be available on both Cartoon Network and HBO Max.Caped Crusdaer isn’t the only word on DC animation, though, with an HBO Max Superman animated series, My Adventures with Superman, in production, the preschool-targeted Batwheels preparing for release, the currently running Aquaman: King of Atlantis, and a stellar upcoming lineup in the dependable DC Animated Movie direct-to-video range.Indeed, DC FanDome was the occasion to debut a trailer for Catwoman: Hunted, an upcoming DC Animated Movie featuring Elizabeth Gillies as Catwoman and Stephanie Beatriz as Batwoman. The pair must team up to take down the organization known as Leviathan in a stylish, anime take on the characters. Other DC Animated Movies set for release in 2022 include Green Lantern: Beware My Powers, Battle of the Super Sons, and a compilation of the 2022 DC Showcase shorts headlined by Constantine: The House of Mystery. Matt Ryan will, of course, reprise his role as magician and con man John Constantine. Before all of that, though, is the release of Injustice, a DC Animated Movie based on the video game and comic book of the same name. During FanDome, a clip was released featuring Joker’s (Kevin Pollak) “masterpiece” – a brutal act of violence which sets Superman (voiced by Justin Hartley) on a dark path. The scene is surprisingly grim and offers those less familiar with the DC Universe Animated line an idea of the sorts of films available. Injustice debuts on home video platforms this Tuesday.Gwendoline Christie Leans Into The Bowie Look For Sandman’s LuciferAlthough not part of the HBO Max lineup, The Sandman received a little recognition via the debut of Gwendoline Christie’s Lucifer in a first-look photo. The image recalls the Bowie-esque appearance the Prince of Darkness assumed in his first Sandman comic book appearance. Its unclear if Christie will keep the look in subsequent appearances or evolve like her comic book counterpart. Curiously, though, Lucifer’s initial androgyny gave way to a more masculine countenance as The Sandman’s story wore on. Perhaps that will also be part of the changes writer Neil Gaiman and his collaborators have in mind for the adaptation of his comic book.Shortly after the Lucifer reveal, Gaiman took to Twitter to clarify that the series will debut on Netflix sometime in 2022. Initial messaging about the series suggested it could launch in late 2021, leading to some confusion and Gaiman’s exasperation in the tweet.DC’s other Netflix-based show, Sweet Tooth, was represented by star Christian Convery answering fan questions. The program, already renewed for a second season, will also remain on Netflix.Barry Will Finally Get Gold Boots On The Flash TV SeriesIn one of the earliest announcements of the event, The Flash TV series star Grant Gustin revealed Barry is finally getting gold boots like his comic book counterpart. “It’s always been the final element that I think has been missing from our suits,” Gustin said. “The suit we have now is the closest we have to a lot of the [comic book] iterations … but I always thought the gold boots would be the final touch.” DC released a close-up image of the boots and a look at the suit with the footwear added. As Gustin intimated, the boots have long been a running joke behind the scenes. They will debut when The Flash begins its eighth season in November.Beyond the long-awaited kicks, the Arrowverse was also represented at DC FanDome via an assortment of special videos. Batwoman stars Javicia Leslie and Rachel Skarsten teased Batwoman and Alice’s state-enforced team-up while the cast of Supergirl looked back their six seasons. DC’s Legends of Tomorrow celebrated 100 episodes in 100 seconds and the cast of Superman and Lois presented a tour of the Kent farmhouse. And although not technically an Arrowverse show (it takes place on the Post-Crisis Earth-2, after all), Stargirl took an extended look at this week’s upcoming episode, which sees Courtney (Brec Bassinger) trapped in the Shadow Lands, where she runs into the Golden Age Dr. Mid-Nite (Alex Collins). But to cap off the Arrowverse presence at FanDome, Naomi star Kaci Walfall debuted a first look at the program, in which she stars as a high schooler who discovers her connection to the DC Multiverse is more staggering than she can imagine. And as the scene shown during FanDome revealed, it all begins with a Superman sighting.Naomi will debut on The CW sometime in 2022.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News.

ng of the West, the Indian-American War, that was a different mindset. And all these people have a certain amount of baggage that they bring.Woodson was the son of a slave, so his vulnerabilities are different than, say, Atticus [in Lovecraft Country]. Atticus came from Chicago, Atticus has always been a free man, and his journey up to that point was that of isolation, even within a majority group. And so he goes to war, he also has to find this video file, so he s an imaginative character. But in Korea, what you see in Korea, that climate was different, that conflict was different. Or coming out of the Vietnam War. So he has all that stuff bagged up too.The cheat sheet is they re people first. First, they re people and they have all their baggage, they have all their circumstances. And then they enter into the war. So how they fight is how they fight, but all that is dependent on where they came from. And it’s contemporary, because everybody has those things — everybody has a father, everybody grew up in some type of community. And that s when it s contemporary. You re just playing the moment without any context around it.(Photo by David Lee/Netflix)Speaking of fathers, your characters also have complicated parental relationships. The relationship between Paul and David in Da 5 Bloods (pictured) and Atticus looking for your missing father in Lovecraft Country are prime examples. As both a parent and a son, do you source from your personal experiences to shape these performances?Majors: Yes, and I continue to. It s right there. The best type of acting is when you don t have to act. You can just say someone else s lines with your experience in it. And so yes. I mean, with David in particular — my father being a military man, my personal relationship with him of mystery, chasing, wondering and some feelings of abandonment — all those things David shares. David shares those steps, and we’re alike in that way. And so I’m pulling directly from my life, and then you take that raw material and you got to say, OK, yes, but we re also in a Spike Lee joint, so let s shift this here, move this here. David s from New Orleans, I m from Texas — let s shift this here. But everything that s inside the character is coming from my personal experience. There are things that you have to pull from. I m not a teacher, I don’t teach Black studies like David did. That s homework. I ll just go get that, you know what I mean? And then when it comes with Atticus, the way he is — that s a different element. And one of the things I do often is to try to think of what s like the ideal situation to be with your father or with your child. And usually the play or the film is not going to give you that, right? And so that s what you re pushing for in the scene. With Montrose [Atticus’ father], Atticus is always trying to get some affection, some approval from him. That s the perfect world for Atticus; that s what he wants. And so I also look at my child and I see that that s what she wants from me. So I m 30 years old now, and I think I ve got my own s going on. I know what I want; I don t need anybody s approval. But the truth is you need your parent s approval at some point in your life. And when you re stuck in that relationship, and that s your primary relationship — father-son, child-parent — that is, to the Nth degree, important.(Photo by Elizabeth Morris/HBO)It seems like you gravitate towards visceral, male familial relationships in your roles as well, such David and Paul in Da 5 Bloods, Mont and Jimmie in The Last Black Man in San Francisco, and Atticus and George in Lovecraft Country. What draws you characters like this?Majors: I think, for me, I work from what I know and what I ve experienced. I grew up playing sports; I grew up in the South. For better or for worse it s a very masculine culture, it s a very gendered culture, unfortunately. But I am a son of that, I grew up there, that s where my people come from, and I m proud of that. And so in just living those relationships, the men in my life, I ve bumped up against them a lot, a whole lot. Whether it d be homies that you meet in detention or your classmates or your coaches Now, as a Black man, I do find that in cinema we don t get portrayed fully. Something that Delroy Lindo has been saying a lot is that it’s a corrective; Da 5 Bloods is a corrective to the American-Vietnam War conflict. And so I m not here to teach nothing, but I do want to enlighten folks. You can enlighten a group of people who aren t a part of that group, right? That gives them intelligence, where they say, Oh, OK. This group is not just this. As Mont says, We re not just one thing. And then you enlighten them and then you empower your own group, because you begin to expand the scope of that group s identity. And so I understand it deeply. As I said, I d grown up skinny, a theater nerd, played on the B team for a while, I finally made it to varsity. I understand the ins and outs of it. And I think [these relationships are] quite romantic. When I say romantic, I mean Roman in that way, that fraternal love that men have for each other without any pejorative ideas placed on it. Men are capable of great affection with each other. They re capable of great aggression towards each other. And I think when you show both of those, you enhance the entire human experience.(Photo by Stammtisch.604)Community is important now more than ever. You’re an alumni of Yale School of Drama along with Black actors such as Lupita Nyong’o, Brain Tyree Henry, Winston Duke, Yahya Abdul Mateen II, and many more. How have those relationships helped you navigate your career?Majors: Each actor is individual. And that community I mean, you kind of spread out of home. There s a phrase or a passage that says, A prophet that has no dignity in his hometown. You got to get the f out of school and you enter into the world. And so I found myself to be more akin and more on the shoulders of Courtney B. Vance, who plays George [in Lovecraft Country], or Angela Bassett, the work of August Wilson, the pedagogy of Lloyd Richards.I think the cool part about it is that we re all in the game now. And that s for the world to talk about, where the Black Yalie is, what an actor from Yale is. But I think we re all clearly individual, and have very different approaches to the work. Again, like the characters, we all come from different backgrounds, but there is a shared DNA as we all spent three years in New Haven. They’re all like siblings of mine. Like, you already checked to see what they re doing because you re doing your own thing. But it means a lot, though, because we all don t live together now. We actually have spread out. I m in Santa Fe, Yahya s wherever he is, being somewhere else, being someplace else. We re all over the world, all over the country. So [it’s a] long web. Because regardless of what your experience was at the school, et cetera, you re connected. So that community does happen. And the people looking up, it s like, Oh, wow. If I want to be an actor If I want to be a young Black actor, as I did, you look to see where the guys went. And so it s a privilege to continue the lineage of Courtney B. Vance and Angela Bassett, we can keep going. But it s a privilege. It is best that we stay separate in order to continue to build out our community. We have fun together, whatever party we get to go to, whatever reunion there is.(Photo by Lorey Sebastian /© Entertainment Studios Motion Pictures /Courtesy Everett Collection)Is there any role that you wanted but didn’t get?Majors: In drama school there s a play, Coriolanus, the Shakespeare play, and I was in the class to play Coriolanus, allegedly. And it didn t land on me, and it broke my heart because I was like, Oh, I got this, sure. I got this, sure. But my first year in the profession I got very, very, very close to playing a role in Detroit, Kathryn Bigelow’s film. And I had flown out — I was shooting When We Rise; it was my first show ever and I had flown down to LA. I was in San Francisco; I d flown down to LA, and I did a table read with Bigelow.I mean, I love the cast who s there, [but] it seemed as if I had the role It was me. I had to fly back — I was still in school at the time — I d fly back to New Haven to graduate. And the day before I graduated, I got a phone call from my agent saying, “We don t know what happened, but they re going to go in a different direction.”And I was completely just destroyed. I mean, it was great. It was Kathryn Bigelow, I was doing a TV show, it was like a huge feature. I then went off to do Hostiles [pictured above], which I don t regret at all. But, yeah, that was a kick in the gut.Lovecraft Country premieres on Sunday, August 16 at 9 p.m. on HBO

1.38.3 0月喜迎In a Golden Globes ceremony full of jaw-dropping surprises and bunch of moving speeches (some personal, many political), a few moments stood out from the pack on Sunday evening. From grumpy uncle Ricky Gervais on hosting duty to tears from America s sweetheart Tom Hanks and Phoebe Waller-Bridge reminding us that Fleabag has a special relationship with a former president, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association s 77th annual party gave viewers plenty of shocks and awwwws and – host network NBC a few good bleeps.(See the full list of winners here.)Read on to learn about those big wins and more of the best moments of the night.Ricky Gervais Gives Not One F in His Opening MonologueIt was his fifth time hosting, and Ricky Gervais hit the stage with guns blazing, taking aim at the HFPA, NBC, Felicity Huffman, and many of the guests assembled for the awards ceremony.“Let’s go out with a bang. Let’s have a laugh at your expense,” he warned, then said that his limo’s license plate was made by Huffman, who served 11 days in jail for her role in the college admissions scandal. Tepid laughter and uncomfortable smiles everywhere. He called Joe Pesci “Baby Yoda” and the room generally “perverts,” suggesting that Ronan Farrow was coming for them. He said that Martin Scorsese was too short to go on amusement park rides, which The Irishman director agreed with.Tom Hanks’ face during the monologue was everything.tom hanks is killing the meme game tonight #GoldenGlobes pic.twitter.com/8Yl5bgaRQp ellie (@griiffinskane) January 6, 2020Gervais plugged his own streaming show, After Life on Netflix, after offering the streaming giant all the awards. Gervais attacked Cats, of course, saying that James Corden is a fat pussy (and also starring in the film) and Dame Judi Dench likes licking her private parts, which he followed with a hairball joke. He paused midway through that last joke because it was so rough he almost couldn t deliver it.He accused Apple of running sweatshops in China and name-checked Amazon and Disney in the same breath along with ISIS. His point: winners should keep their speeches short, because out-of-touch actors and filmmakers have no business lecturing the public about politics (which many actors and filmmakers, of course, went on to do later in the program – moments which you can find online but which we ve left out here).Shocking Upsets Hit in First Acting Awards of the NightAfter insulting them for working with Apple, Gervais turned the stage over to Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. What were expected to be easy wins for Bill Hader for Barry and Jared Harris for Chernobyl, the first two awards of the night, for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy and Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television, went instead to Ramy star Ramy Youssef and Russell Crowe for The Loudest Voice.“This is thanks to God and Hulu. Look, I know you guys haven’t seen my show. Everyone’s like, ‘Is this an editor?’” Youssef joked, in an earnest speech that helped cut the tension in the room. “My Mom also, by the way, was rooting for Michael Douglas. Egyptians love Michael Douglas. I don’t know if you know this.”Crowe hadn’t flown in for the event. Aniston noted that he remained in Australia to protect his family from bushfires and delivered a message from him attributing the devastation in his country to climate change. The surprises would continue in the male acting categories with Chernobyl’s Stellan Skarsgård, who attributed his win to his eyebrows, taking Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television, a category most prognosticators expected to go to anyone but him.Parasite Director Bong Joon-ho Makes a Case for Foreign-Language Films(Photo by Paul Drinkwater/NBC)In a night full of surprises, one of the least shocking moments came when Korea’s Parasite was named Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language. The movie, which is an Oscar frontrunner for Best Picture, was as sure a thing as you could get. Nevertheless, the win did give us a surprisingly touching moment (at least if you haven’t seen moment-making writer-director Bong Joon-ho on stage before). Joon-ho took the stage with a translator and delivered one of the biggest applause lines of the night, telling the audience and the world watching: “Once you overcome the one-inch–tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.” On a night when foreign-language film contenders included incredible movies like Pain and Glory, Portrait of a Lady On Fire, The Farewell, Les Misérables, and his own Parasite, the point hit ho
For a star under 40, Anna Paquin is exceedingly accomplished: She won a Best Actress in a Supporting Role Oscar at 11 years old for her role in The Piano; starred in one of HBO s biggest hit series, True Blood; and played teen superhero Rogue in four films of the blockbuster X-Men franchise. On her latest series, Pop s Flack, Paquin is responsible for saving celebrity reputations from turmoil, sometimes recovering their stardom from boredom or plateaued intrigue. She plays Robyn, a take-no-s publicist for the biggest crisis-management — sorry, challenge-management — company (aka public relations firm) in England. The lurid scandals and frenzied social media fallout Robyn deals with on Flack feel undeniably timely, but Paquin, who also executive produces the series, promises that Robyn is absolutely not based on her Hollywood experiences with publicists or public relations reps. Creator Oliver Lansley told reporters at the show s Television Critics Association panel in February that Paquin s character is actually an amalgamation of people he s met, not just publicists. All of the stories came from a nugget of truth,  Langsley said of the nightmare scenarios Robyn has to manage, from Freudian slips to botched cosmetics and extramarital affairs.Robyn and her fellow publicists regularly trade personal information for professional security, something Lansley said is quite common in the industry. Flack is all about how celebrity clients trade one scandal for another, conveniently wielding shame and sympathy to protect or regain their status.Ahead of Flack’s premiere, Paquin shared what she admires about Robyn and hinted just how wild the show’s ride will be. But first, she tells us what shows she deems binge-worthy.(Photo by courtesy Pop)What’s appointment viewing for you?Oh, I don’t have any… I don t even know what day or time things are on, but I m presuming it s either when my children are going to bed or when I already would like to be asleep. What’s in your streaming queue?(Photo by Netflix)I like documentaries. The darker the subject matter, the better. I m a big true crime [fan].Are you going to watch new Ted Bundy special on Netflix?I’ve already watched it. It’s fascinating, if you’re into that genre. But I also listen to those podcasts about stuff like that so…Like Dirty John?Oh my god, that was great. But again, I didn t know it was a TV show until I listened to the podcast and I was like, Oh, I feel like there s posters up for some, is it the same thing?  I m a little bit in my mother bubble. What shows are on your DVR?(Photo by Showtime)We are currently watching Escape at Dannemora… We re up to episode five, so if you ve seen the rest of it, don t spoil it.What’s coming soon that you’re excited for?(Photo by Pop)Flack. I’m serious. If I wasn’t in it, this would be a show I would be obsessed with. I mean, that opening scene’s pretty killer, right?Sophie-Marie for Rotten Tomatoes: What drew you to the character of Robyn? What s not to love? I mean, she s talented, smart, troubled and really good at her job — and morally ambiguous in all kinds of ways that I think are very real, raw, and authentic. And she gets some really, incredibly fun, smart, well-written dialogue. It kind of ticks all the boxes for me.What makes her so good at a job that requires her to kind of walk a moral line, or jump right off the moral cliff, so often? She had a really f -d up childhood, you know? I mean, she basically raised her younger sister because their mother was mentally unwell. … You end up finding out more about that as the series goes on. But there s also kind of a fight to survive-ness, like,  I will do whatever I need to do because I don t have a safety net. She s someone who has grown up in a household where mood stability was not a given and the ground rules changed all the time, because that s the nature of living with someone who s an addict or who has mental health issues. So that s not abnormal for her. So, one sister ends up with this sort of perfect, by-the-book family life and [Robyn] ends up [being] someone who isn t really sure who she is without the job of making other people s illusions a reality.

Ghcxuf character and be like, bloody hell, no wonder women wanted to liberated because this is miserable. But yeah, if especially you re a young actress and they just get you into a corset then automatically you re like this treasured, virginal, ingenue.RT: It struck me while watching that I’ve actually never seen you in anything where you use your own accent — you’re always playing an American.Cooke: Yeah I was really worried going in cause I m doing a very posh English accent, and I m worried that I can t do this now. I m worried that I can t act in something that is close to my own accent!RT: I think it worked out. How did you feel?Cooke: I don t hear American and I don t hear my own accent, so I think I m all right.(Photo by Robert Viglasky/Amazon)RT: What did you like about Becky?Cooke: She s just so naughty and so mischievous and conniving. She says exactly what she thinks and she s so unapologetic for her actions. I think playing someone like that is usually only reserved for the men. And I think of a Fleabag or a Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Veep — these women that I m so drawn to have these qualities where they re incredibly flawed people but they kind of know it as well, and they re using that to their advantage. Especially with Becky, [it was] a time when women didn t have jobs unless you were a very, very low status. She s using her wit and her charm and her skills as seductress to get by in life and to rise to the ranks of society. I just think she s pretty clever and she s pretty conniving for doing that.RT: Had you read the novel this series is based on?Cooke: When I got sent the scripts and they signed off on me, and I signed on, I read the book. It s a really incredible book. It gives you a visceral sense of the time, but also William Makepeace Thackeray has written these incredibly flawed women, Amelia Sedley and Becky Sharp, who are at two opposite ends of the spectrum. Neither one of them is this archetype or vision of what a woman should be in life.(Photo by Robert Viglasky/Amazon)RT: Reviews of the show have mentioned that it makes the story relatable for a 21st-century audience. Would you agree?Cooke: I do, and I think all of us made a bit of a conscious effort because we weren t there at this time in the early 1800s. You don t really know what people act like. Gwyneth Hughes has done such an amazing job of adapting the book and really making it her own, in a sense, as well. The dialogue is there on the page, but in terms of physicality we don t have to act with a big rod up our asses. You can be a bit more silly. You can be a bit more frivolous with your performance and more flamboyant. I think it works. Also, we adopted this motif of giving the occasional glances to camera in order to let the audience in and let it be a little more accessible and a bit more conspiratorial. So they re in on the plotting and the conniving with Becky, and I think other period dramas sometimes hold the audience at arm’s length because it does feel too foreign, the way people live. But with this it s a bit of a nudge-nudge, wink-wink, you re on the same level as me.RT: What’s next for you?Cooke: I did an episode of the anthology Modern Love for Amazon. So Amazon is keeping me employed, which is nice. And then I did a film in summer with Riz Ahmed called Sound of Metal, directed by Darius Marder.Vanity Fair is available Friday, Dec. 21 on Amazon Prime. 😈😈

亚博正式官网 When audiences discover The Umbrella Academy on Netflix, they will be introduced to a very different sort of superhero family. As actor Aidan Gallagher, who plays the time-lost Number Five, put it when Rotten Tomatoes spoke with the cast, “[The characters] are not seen at great heights.” Instead, the series focuses on the group, formerly a teen superhero team with fantastic abilities, at “rock bottom a lot of times.”As in the graphic novel series by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba upon which the show is based, the characters face the legacy of a choice made by their adoptive father Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore). In the series backstory, a number of children were born at the same time on the same day despite the fact their mothers — themselves not connected in any way — had not been pregnant when the day began. Already a famous adventurer, Hargreeves tries to adopt these special children, and succeeds at collecting several of them. He surmised that they would have extraordinary abilities and prove instrumental in saving the world.

(Photo by Sarah Shatz/Netflix)Author Jenny Han is an expert on crushes, romances and meet-cutes. In addition to other titles in her catalog, her To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before book trilogy is an international best-seller that has inspired three Netflix movies – the last of which, To All the Boys: Always and Forever, was released February 12 on the streaming channel. Peppered with references, both vague and blatant, to its rom-com ancestors, the films follow Lana Condor’s high schooler Lara Jean Covey and her commitment to baked goods, her sisters, and, eventually, her near-perfect boyfriend, Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo). So it isn’t really a surprise that Han is frequently asked about her favorite romantic comedies.“I ve gone back and forth over it, but for me, my favorite that I can turn on and it puts me in a good mood and it s just comforting is Bridget Jones s Diary,” Han says of the Renée Zellweger film. “I think it s a gold standard. And I mean, there s a reason she (Zellweger) was nominated for an Academy Award for that.”And, as anyone who has read Han’s books or seen the To All the Boys movies knows, she says she “love(s) love triangles.” Han says that the one in Bridget Jones particularly works because the two potential suitors, Colin Firth’s Mark Darcy and Hugh Grant’s Daniel Cleaver, both “feel like legitimate options, even though Daniel is a cad.”This isn’t to say that Han has seen every romantic comedy ever. She tried watching Broadcast News on a plane and failed and says that “I don t think I fully appreciated” Heartburn because she saw it as a kid when a friend’s older sister had rented it. Han remembers that she “drifted away from the television” thinking that the relationship dynamic between Meryl Streep’s Rachel Samstat and Jack Nicholson’s Mark Forman “seems messed up.” (She was not wrong.)It’s even debatable whether or not those two movies are even romantic comedies – something that also happens a lot to movies about teens.“For instance, I would say that Breakfast Club gets shelved in romantic comedy,” Han says. However, “I don t really think it s that romantic. I think, with a teen love story, oftentimes it s a lot more about their whole life and family and stuff. And I think, oftentimes, with adult romantic comedies, it s really more about the romance. And so I think coming-of-age can be shelved also in romantic comedy.”Read on for a list of some movies (and one TV show!) that are some of Han’s favorite romantic comedies – even if her definition of the term may be up for debate.
