In another time the weekend would have been billed as the battle between the Joker and the Gemini Man. This is not that time. While nobody seriously gave the new Will Smith film a chance to dethrone the comic-book spinoff film, many assumed it could at least beat The Addams Family. It is a story about three stories at the box office this week and none of them involve Jexi. But the story of Joker is shaping up to be a bigger one than anyone truly imagined.King of the Crop: Joker Keeps on Smiling with Record-Breaking Second Weekend(Photo by © Warner Bros. )Warner Bros.’ Joker showed no real signs of a slow-down this week and set a new record on top of it. Initial estimates on Friday suggested a weekend just under million. As of Sunday morning the projections had jumped to million, which handily bests the .1 million that Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity made to have now the best first and second weekends ever for a film opening in October. With 2.73 million total domestically through 10 days it is also well ahead of Venom’s 2.1 million and Gravity’s 2.3 million. That second number is significant since Cuaron’s film is the highest-grossing October film of all time and Joker now finds itself just million behind. Todd Phillips’ film also joins an elite group of movies opening to million or higher and dropping less than 44% in their second week: Star Wars: The Force Awakens, 2002’s Spider-Man, Shrek 2, 2016’s The Jungle Book, Wonder Woman, Inside Out, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, The Passion of the Christ, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones.Gravity was a marvel of consistency, never dropping more than 37% through its first seven weeks. Joker fell only 42.8% this weekend and could even challenge Gravity’s record-setting million third weekend. On the all-time 10-day chart, Joker is more than million ahead of Phillips’ own The Hangover Part II (7.87 million), a film which fell 63.5% in weekend two down to .38 million and ultimately finished with 4.46 million. Gravity’s final domestic haul was 4 million, but now Joker is in a group of 63 other films with 0 million or more after 10 days (Joker is 62nd), and only five of those films failed to reach 0 million. The lowest-grossing film among them was The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1, with 1.28 million – which would be good enough to secure October’s highest-grossing film ever. Worldwide Joker is up to 1 million.Fresh Surprise: Addams Family Spooks Up A Strong OpeningUnited Artists Releasing, which has become the roof over the heads of Annapurna, Orion and MGM, had a good weekend, and their animated version of The Addams Family is going to be their highest-grossing film to date. Addams took home a .3 million opening weekend, looking to surpass UA’s The Hustle (.41 million total) in a few days and Annapurna’s Vice (.83 million) before its 10th day. This may be less than Adam Sandler’s Hotel Transylvania films, which began between million and million each, but is now the third-best October start for an animated film behind Shark Tale (.6 million) and Puss in Boots (.07 million). They went on to gross 0 million and 9 million, respectively. Or, is it better if three different directors each tackle different films in a trilogy? With the wildly successful John Wick: Chapter 3 Parabellum marking the third Certified Fresh John Wick collaboration between director Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves (with a fourth on the way!), we decided to do a Tomatometer deep dive into theatrically released trilogies helmed by single directors. We wanted to know how the Tomatometer scores and domestic box office numbers for trilogies like Francis Ford Coppola s The Godfather, Jay Roach’s Austin Powers, and The Wachowskis’ Matrix films compare to trilogies directed by two or three separate directors.Is consistency actually key?After comparing the Tomatometer and box office data of 83 different trilogies we learned that when one person (or a duo like the Wachowskis) directs all three films, their trilogies make more money on average and have much higher Tomatometer averages than the trilogies in which two or three different people direct the entries. There are exceptions to the rule, of course, but the numbers favor The Dark Knight, Spider-Man, and Back to the Future trilogies, which were lucky enough to have Christopher Nolan, Sam Raimi, and Robert Zemeckis see them all the way through.If you’re interested in reading about the trilogy selection process, and seeing the list of selected franchises, you can check them out below. The 68% Tomatometer average for trilogies with a single director or directing team isn’t super Fresh, but it’s well ahead of the 54% and 49% averages of the trilogies with multiple directors. The Fresh average can be attributed to exceptional franchises such as Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy (97.6% average Tomatometer score), How to Train Your Dragon (94.6%), and The Lord of the Rings (93%), trilogies that received multiple Academy Awards and include no films with Tomatometer scores lower than 91%. The sequels that contributed to the Fresh Tomatometer averages throughout the series are classics like John Wick: Chapter 2 (89%), Evil Dead 2 (98%), Spider-Man 2 (93%), Before Midnight (98%), The Dark Knight (94%), The Trip to Spain (82%), and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (93%). The coolest (or nerdiest) fact here is how similar the Tomatometer averages for the trilogies directed by two or three people are until their third films (45% compared with 35.5%). It helps that eight of the 36 (22.8%) series with a single director or directing team, including the Star Wars prequels and The Hobbit trilogy, made over billion domestically after adjusting for inflation. The 1 and 1 million box office averages for the other groups of trilogies are very respectable. However, only six of the 58 trilogies (10.3%) in the other two categories made over billion domestically; these multi-director trilogies include Iron Man, Beverly Hills Cop, and the original Star Wars trilogy. Trilogies directed by one person also had the smallest box office drop between each film; the million (30%) box office drop from the first to third film is smaller than the 5 (45%) and 6 (60%) million drops for trilogies with two directors and three directors, respectfully.ARE THERE EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULE? Colbert/Universal Pictures)Of course, when it comes to Tomatometer ratings, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has proven with their Iron Man (two directors), Thor (three directors), and Captain America (one single director and a directing team) trilogies that it sometimes doesn’t matter how many directors helm the movies. Also, the Pitch Perfect, Hannibal, Star Trek (2009-2016), Meet the Parents, X-Men, Beverly Hills Cop, and Wolverine trilogies pulled in huge amounts of money and had multiple directors. So, trilogies can absolutely work with multiple directors. HOW DID WE PICK THE TRILOGIES?(Photo by Lionsgate)Since John Wick tells the continuing story of Keanu Reeves s titular assassin killing hundreds of henchmen on his quest for revenge, we stuck with trilogies that told a continuous story featuring the same character(s) or plot lines throughout three films. Examples are Richard Linklater’s Before trilogy, and Todd Phillips Hangover trilogy, which saw the exploits of the same characters to a conclusion. We didn’t include trilogies with loose-connections (Noriko Trilogy), similar themes (Three Colors), or actors (Cornetto Trilogy) tying them all together. Also, you may notice that some of the trilogies we included such as the Pirates of the Caribbean, Jason Bourne, Jurassic Park, and Scream franchises went on to have more than three films. We included them because they had three-film narrative arcs that were completed with the third installment (e.g., Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade). Some of these films had fourth (or fifth or sixth installments), but most of these later installments were meant to be part of a new trilogy (e.g. Jurassic World and Scream 4, which was supposed to be the beginning of a new trilogy). If a trilogy did not have complete Tomatometer scores they weren’t included. That’s why you won’t see the Infernal Affairs or Samurai trilogies below. The trilogies also needed to have been released in theaters. They re the lines you ve worn on T-shirts and Photoshopped into memes. They re the lines you re maybe a little sick of, but can t stop loving. Before they were famous, though – before they were parodied on SNL and printed onto ironic mugs – they were words on a page and then words in a movie you were hearing for the first time, and they stuck. Maybe they were hilarious (poor Gretchen, fetch never happened), or maybe they were chilling ( I see dead people ). Maybe they were delivered just right ( Why so serious? ). Here, we re looking back at the 21 most memorable lines from the movies since August 1998, the year that Rotten Tomatoes came into this world. If we missed a favorite of yours, let us know in the comments. The Sixth Sense (1999) Neither M. Night Shyamalan nor Haley Joel Osment knew that the intensely whispered “I see dead people” would become the center of Disney’s marketing push for The Sixth Sense – and the subject of parodies for decades. Talking recently to Rotten Tomatoes, Osment said he was just thankful Twitter hadn’t been invented at the time the film came out, when he was 11. Notting Hill (1999) When you pair America’s sweetheart with Britain’s reigning rom-com king, you have to bring your A-game, and writer Richard Curtis did just that for Notting Hill. With this heartbreaking line, he manages to somehow get us rooting for one of the world’s richest and most glamorous movie stars, and screaming with frustration at the regular “fairly level-headed bloke” whose love she’s asking for. American Pie (1999) Paul and Chris Weitz’s surprisingly sweet teen sex comedy gave us one of the late ’90s most indelible movie images (the pie!), and chased that up with one of the decade’s most memorable movie lines. And one that’s got a sex-positive ring: “What?” asks Alyson Hannigan’s Michelle flatly after revealing where she sometimes puts her flute. “You don’t think I know how to get myself off?” Fight Club (1999) From Chuck Pahalniuk s pen to Brad Pitt s mouth and into the minds of college students all over the country Galaxy Quest (1999) It was only appropriate that this cult spoof of Star Trek and its legion of Trekkie fans would have its own live-long-and-prosper–style catchphrase. It is delivered with Shatnerian levels of cheese and determination by Tim Allen, playing Jason Nesmith, who’s playing Commander Quincy Peter Taggart. Office Space (1999) We could run through an entire stack of Post-Its writing down our favorite lines from Mike Judge’s cult favorite, but this chipper, grating, morning greeting wins out – an encapsulation of the deep, smiley rage suppression that gives Office Space its kick. Erin Brockovich (2000) When Ed (Albert Finney) asks Julia Roberts’ Erin Brockovich, “What makes you think you can just walk in there and find what we need?”, she fires off this line and a look that says, Seriously, you need to ask? The resourceful real-life Erin Brockovich has said she did use the line with the real-life Ed – probably more than once. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) Some consider it blasphemy that Peter Jackson added this line as a climax to Gandalf’s defiant verbal smackdown of the fiery Balrog; in the original Tolkien book, Gandalf only says “you cannot pass” (which he also says, though less iconically, as he starts his speech in the film). Jackson’s addition became one of the best “f—k yeah!” moments in the original movie trilogy and went on to spawn thousands of memes. Training Day (2001) Denzel Washington won an Oscar for playing corrupt narcotics cop Alonzo in Atonine Fuqua’s Training Day, and it might have been his delivery this line – puffed-up and chest-pounding as he realizes power is slipping away – that got any hesitant Academy voters across the line. The Incredibles (2004) It’s unfair to say that Edna Mode (voiced by Incredibles writer-director Brad Bird) steals Pixar’s superhero smash – there are too many awesome elements and characters for one to dominate – but she comes very, very close. She’s full of one-liners and shady zingers, but it’s her golden rule (“No capes!”), and the various anecdotes that led to it (R.I.P. Thunderhead), that people remember most fondly. Mean Girls (2004) Mean Girls’ Regina George (Rachel McAdams) is the queen bee of her group, and this was perhaps her sharpest stinger. Irony is, while “fetch” didn’t happen, this line caught on in a big way. 300 (2006) On paper, there’s nothing particularly special about this line – it’s kinda just a statement of fact (it is Sparta, after all – not Athens or Thermopylae, and definitely not madness, nor blasphemy). But coming out of Peak Gerard Butler’s mouth as a kind of gravelly scream for the ages, and accompanied by that iconic slow-mo kick, it’s gone down in film history. Watching this moment, we are all Sparta (even those of us without six packs). Black Panther (2018) This greeting of the Wakandan people, and the accompanying gesture, infiltrated popular culture following the release of mega-hit Black Panther in February 2018. (The film’s stars were asked to do the gesture so frequently on red carpets and during interviews, memes began to circulate showing a bored-looking Chadwick Boseman – who plays the titular hero – giving a perfunctory version of the cross-armed symbol.) Interestingly, the most memorable use of the phrase might come in Infinity War, and not Black Panther, when T’Challa shouts the phrase as he leads his Wakandans into battle against Thanos’s forces. Brokeback Mountain (2005) When Jake Gyllenhaal said these words to Heath Ledger while shooting Brokeback Mountain, he probably had no idea what a life they would go on to have: first as a wrenching moment between their characters, Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar; then as a source of parody and a meme (mostly among those too immature to cope with the film); finally, and most recently, as a shorthand for the film itself, and what it meant to the LGBTQ community to see a gay couple portrayed authentically and without judgment in a major release. The Hunger Games (2012) There are plenty of action-packed, effects-enhanced, and completely thrilling moments throughout the Hunger Games franchise, but few are as simultaneously inspiring and terrifying as the quiet scene in which Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) steps forward to take her young sister’s place in the Games. The line is lifted directly from the same scene in first book of Susanne Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy. Snakes on a Plane (2006) You may not recall the insane hype around Snakes on a Plane in the lead up to its release – an irony-fueled internet buzz-wave that stemmed, essentially, from the absurdity of its premise-capturing title. You may not even remember much of the film itself. But there is no way you forgot this line, spoken by profanity wizard Samuel L. Jackson in one of those legendary B-movie inspiration speeches he’s so masterful at delivering. (Fun fact: The line has aired on FX as the more-safe-for-work “monkey-flying snakes on this Monday-to-Friday plane.”) Taken (2008) It was in 2009, while in his mid 50s, that Liam Neeson discovered a very particular set of skills – gravelly line-readings, a death-stare for the ages, and a capacity for rapid-fire action – that would launch a whole new chapter of his career: Liam Neeson, Action Star! And while the past decade has been littered with Neeson action programmers (right up to 2019 s Cold Pursuit), none have matched Taken for its intensity, impact, and the power of that oft-quoted bedroom scene.
Best-Reviewed Spanish-Language Movie 2018Alfonso Cuarón s semi-autobiographical drama set in Mexico City has been at or near the top of a lot of Best of 2018 lists, so it s no surprise that it also reigns supreme over all of the terrific Spanish-language films we got this year. This new category was created to reflect the incredible number and quality of Spanish-language films being released in U.S. theaters.The order of the rank below reflects the Adjusted Score as of December 31, 2018. Standards have been set this summer by Disney, Universal, and Paramount while Warner Brothers has given the term front-loaded further meaning showing the effects of those that choose a trip to their couches for HBO Max over a trip to theaters. Disney’s flirtation with their home accessibility for an additional price on their streaming service Disney+ continued this weekend. We don’t know the full extent of their couch success aside from a couple of lofty debuts, so what can we glean from their box office numbers this weekend?King of the Crop: Smooth Waters for Jungle Cruise, But Can It Keep Chugging Along?Disney certainly got one headline they were hoping for this weekend. Jungle Cruise’s no. 1 opening was not a shocker, but getting to .2 million put it ahead of Space Jam: A New Legacy’s start of million. That number is also good enough for the fourth-best opening of the pandemic, better than even Godzilla vs. Kong’s .6 million first weekend (and that film had a two-day head start as well that helped its long-term prospects of eventually reaching 0 million). Jungle Cruise faces an uphill river going forward just based on the two biggest obstacles impeding nine-digit totals – family-oriented titles struggle to get there right now and day-and-date streaming options.Last week, Space Jam: A New Legacy, streaming for those with an HBO Max subscription, fell 69.1% in its second weekend and looks to still top out around million total. The week before, Disney’s Black Widow, available for .99 via Premier Access on Disney+, fell 67.8%. As the front-loaded grosses go up, the subsequent drops go higher as well. Second viewings in theaters are likely way down in this atmosphere and any good word-of-mouth may bring people more to the couch than the lounge seat in the theater. Disney may choose to point to Cruella (also a Premier Access title) having the best multiple (3.94) for a film opening to over million, but it is certainly an outlier. Only A Quiet Place Part II and Godzilla vs. Kong have made more than three times their opening weekend in that group of movies to open with more than million. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is the only other title to get over 2.5x its start.Then again, it s debatable if Jungle Cruise getting to 0 million without some serious international and streaming numbers is a victory for a film budgeted at 0 million. F9 is the only film right now that has made enough theatrical revenue to cover that price tag, grossing over 1 million worldwide. No other film has crossed half-a-billion since 2019. Jungle Cruise reportedly grossed another .6 million internationally and “over million” from its Premier Access – or half of what Black Widow made in its debut. At present, Disney is not going to be releasing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to Premier Access on September 3 – it will be available exclusively in theaters.Fresh Surprise: A24 Scores Some Big Personal Bests With The Green KnightA24 had a momentous weekend. For just the fifth time in its eight-year history, the indie darling opened a film in over 2,000 theaters. And it made some headlines. David Lowery’s The Green Knight – one of the best-reviewed wide releases of the year, Certified Fresh at 90% on the Tomatometer – opened to .7 million. While that may not seem like a big chunk of change, let’s look a little closer. That is higher than both Midsommar and It Comes At Night, making it the third-highest opening in A24 s history. This is also the first time a film of theirs ranked as high as second place on the weekend box office chart. Even if the estimates fall and Old barely bests it, A24 has never had a third place finish either; both The Witch and Hereditary opened in fourth in their respective weekends in 2016 and 2018. Surely the film was helped by a lackluster marketplace and big drops from last week’s films. Who knows how those grosses would have been altered (or boosted overall at home) with a streaming option, but the studio which has practically become its own brand at this point got a win this weekend by betting on cinephiles desire to see a touted masterpiece and its scope on a big screen.Rotten Returns: A Mixed Story for Focus Features Matt Damon Thriller Stillwater(Photo by Jessica Forde / Focus Features)The numbers for director Tom McCarthy and Matt Damon’s American-abroad thriller Stillwater are not great. That said, they look good for Focus Features given their output since theaters began opening up. Instead of instituting a move to increase volume on their titles with instant streaming access, the studio has taken a full-steam-ahead theatrical approach to their releases going back to last September. The result has been a top opening weekend for Let Him Go ( million), a top final gross by Come Play (.4 million) – both from 2020 – and of their seven releases in 2021 so far, not one of them have matched either of those 2020 markers.Their eighth release of the year, Stillwater, did manage to break their opening ceiling with .1 million, giving it the likely odds to outgross Come Play as well. It has already bested Focus’s top release of 2021 in Boogie (.17 million). Note, however, that Stillwater s per-theater-average of ,000 is less than that for the opening weekend of their Anthony Bourdain documentary, Roadrunner (,145), and that is just their fourth film since the pandemic to have a PTA over ,000.What kind of revenue are they missing out on by not offering these films at home for a price tag? When you consider the films actually making theatrical revenue during the 2021 period of the pandemic, the only titles geared towards adults that are not a sequel, a prequel, or a reboot and which have grossed over million are Old, In the Heights, Wrath of Man, and Nobody. And only Old is cracking million. Pre-Stillwater’s opening, Focus’s seven films this year have grossed a total of less than million. Stillwater will finally get them over million for the year.The Top 10 And Beyond: Old Marks Biggest Second-Weekend Drop for M. Night Shyamalan Since The Happening(Photo by Phobymo /© Universal Pictures )Last week’s no. 1 film, Old, fell back to third place this weekend with just .7 million. The 60.3% fall is the worst drop for M. Night Shyamalan since The Happening fell 65.7% after a .5 million opening in 2008. When looking at the drops of 15 historical July openers that began between .5 million and .7 million, there are two standouts: Old now joins the ranks of Catwoman (-61.5%) and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (-62.6%) in their second weekends. Those films finished with .2 million and .1 million, respectively, and it appears Old is headed into the same territory. If so, it could finish with less than Shyamalan s Lady in the Water’s .2 million in 2006.Marvel’s Black Widow, meanwhile, is now the subject of a potential precedent-setting lawsuit by star Scarlett Johansson over diminished profits stemming from its hybrid release in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access. While we have not heard anything about the streaming numbers beyond its million debut on the service, its theatrical total rose to over 7 million this weekend. That puts it at around the totals of Men In Black II and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs after 24 days, though it made around .5 million-to- million less than both of those films on its fourth weekend. The best hope for Black Widow is that the film can stretch to get into the 0 million range, which is where both those films ended up, but it is still likely headed to between 0 million-0 million as suggested last week. Joe Origins fell 70% from last week to just million. That’s the worst drop for a film exclusively in theaters this year and now ranks amongst the 10 worst drops for a film opening between million and million. We’re talking out of over 700 films, too: Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience (-77.40%), The Photograph (-77.10%), The Bye Bye Man (-74.60%), Land of the Dead (-73.40%), Endless Love (2014) (-70.20%), Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins (70.0%), Skyline (-69.50%), The Grudge (2020) (-69.20%), Elektra (-69.00%), Child s Play (2019) (-68.60%).Though the studio behind Snake Eyes is citing concerns over the Delta variant spreading among the unvaccinated for its recent decision to pull Clifford the Big Red Dog from its September 17 release, could it be the action flick s underperformance – as well as the general underperformance of family titles – that spooked them? The film is still scheduled to premiere at next month’s Toronto Film Festival and Paramount’s Paw Patrol is still on the schedule for August 20. Could Paramount+ or a move to Amazon be on the table next for either of them?Finally, Sony Classics’ Nine Days had one of the best limited launches of the year earning ,455 in just four theaters for a ,614 per-screen-average. The only limited releases to start better were the Vietnamese film, Bo Gia, which made 0,000 in 20 theaters (,500 PTA) and Neon’s Ailey making ,091 in two theaters (,546 PTA).On The Vine: Acclaimed The Suicide Squad Puts Theatrical/HBO Max Release Strategy to the Test One of the last attempts for a potential blockbuster of the summer arrives with James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. If Warner Brothers is feeling confident, they have reason: Early reviews have the movie already Certified Fresh at 96% on the Tomatometer (which is a big jump from the Rotten 26% Tomatometer score for the original). If you commit to releasing at least one new film on your streaming service every weekend in a given year, you have to accept the fact that not all of them are going to be winners. That isn t to say Netflix s latest genre film, Kate, failed to impress any writers at all; it just didn t quite reach the critical heights of its similarly themed Gunpowder Milkshake from just a couple months ago. Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays the titular character, an elite assassin who botches a hit on a yakuza boss in Tokyo and finds herself poisoned in the process. With only 24 hours to live, Kate goes on the hunt for her killers and unexpectedly forms a friendship with the young daughter of one of her former targets. Critics say Winstead does her best to hold Kate together, and the action is serviceable enough, but with the deadly female assassin out for revenge subgenre currently in full bloom, there just isn t enough to set the film apart.

That doesn t mean, however, that he can t start building other franchises for his filmography. Perhaps surprisingly for his age (23), that next big role for Tom Holland is Nathan Drake, the star of Sony s Uncharted video game franchise. (It appears that, as with Alicia Vikander s Tomb Raider reboot, the first Uncharted movie might be a prequel or origin story.) The movie has been in development for a while, but Sony Pictures has confirmed production by announcing a release date of December 18, 2020. By aiming for that weekend, Sony is directly taking on Steven Spielberg s West Side Story remake and Eddie Murphy s Coming to America sequel. The Uncharted video games combine elements of Tomb Raider, Indiana Jones, and arguably Nicolas Cage s National Treasure movies. The first Uncharted movie will be directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who made his debut in 2016 with 10 Cloverfield Lane (Certified Fresh at 90%).Fresh Developments1. QUENTIN TARANTINO S DJANGO TO CROSSOVER WITH ZORRO(Photo by Andrew Cooper/Weinstein Company)Much has been written in the last year or so about Quentin Tarantino s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (7/26/2019) (currently Fresh at 94%) and his possible Star Trek plans, but another old rumor was confirmed this week with the news that Tarantino is also producing (but probably won t direct) what s basically a sequel to his 2012 Southern Django Unchained, starring Jamie Foxx as the title character. As appealing as such a sequel might be on its own, the title takes it to another level, because Django/Zorro would cross the character over with the Californian freedom fighter who is celebrating his 100th anniversary this year. Quentin Tarantino has enlisted comedian-turned-screenwriter Jerrod Carmichael, of TV s The Carmichael Show, to adapt the Dynamite Entertainment and Vertigo Comics comic book of the same title.2. SIMON PEGG AND NICK FROST REUNITING TO PRODUCE HORROR MOVIE SVALTA(Photo by Rogue Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)From 2004 to 2013, British comic actors Simon Pegg (a.k.a. Scotty from Star Trek and Benji from the Mission:Impossible movies) and Nick Frost starred in director Edgar Wright s Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World s End), and also co-starred together in other films like Paul and The Adventures of Tintin. We should note right away that they re not yet confirmed to be starring in this week s new project, but they are producing the film together. Pegg and Frost have sold a horror pitch called Svalta to Orion Pictures, with Frost also attached as the film s screenwriter. Svalta will tell the story of a family on their summer vacation to a remote Swedish island [called Svalta] where they discover a serial killer is on the loose, but the locals have no interest in helping the stranded family of tourists. 3. NEW PROJECTS FOR MAHERSHALA ALI AND BARRY JENKINS(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Steve Mack/Everett Collection)In 2016, Mahershala Ali and director Barry Jenkins took home a trio of Oscars including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for their collaborative work on the coming-of-age drama Moonlight, and both of their stars have only risen higher since. Accordingly, each of them made headlines with new film projects this week. Mahershala Ali is now attached to executive produce and star in a Fox Searchlight true story drama called Solitary. The film will be adapted from a memoir by Albert Woodfox, who spent 43 years in solitary confinement at Louisiana s notorious Angola Prison. Barry Jenkins new film is also set up at Fox Searchlight, and it will be an untitled biopic about acclaimed dance choreographer Alvin Ailey.4. POP STAR CAMILA CABELLO S CINDERELLA SCHEDULED FOR 2021 (Photo by Steve Mack/Everett Collection)Sony Pictures is moving forward with plans for a new version of the fairy tale Cinderella starring Camila Cabello, a Cuban-American pop star who got her start as a contestant on The X-Factor in 2012, as the studio officially scheduled the film for release on February 5, 2021. That puts it one week after the Rugrats reboot movie (1/29/2021) and one week before Marvel Studios first movie in 2021 (we don t know which movie that is yet). This new Cinderella will be directed by Blockers (Certified Fresh at 83%) Kay Cannon, who this week also made the news for a project called 79ers. That movie is being produced by Will Ferrell and Seth Rogen and is described as being like The Goonies for adults, following a group of friends who are forced to reunite 20 years later after failing to finish a treasure hunt as teenagers.5. BILL SKARSGARD TO SPEND NINE DAYS WITH VARIOUS MARVEL MOVIE CO-STARS(Photo by Brooke Palmer/Warner Bros.)It s not that uncommon that the same actor or filmmaker shows up in more than one new project in a given week, but this week we saw this happen a few times. Let s start here with a supernatural thriller called Nine Days, in which Black Panther and Us star Winston Duke will play a mysterious man who interviews prospective candidates, a personification of human souls for the privilege that he once had. (This writer doesn t quite know what that even means, but there you go.) Those personifications will be played by Zazie Beetz (Domino from Deadpool 2), Benedict Wong (Wong from Doctor Strange), and Bill Skarsgård (a.k.a. Pennywise from IT). The repeat star in this case is Bill Skarsgård, who also signed on this week to star in a true crime drama called Gilded Rage.6. PETER DINKLAGE SAYS I CARE A LOT (Photo by HBO)Going into the final episodes of Game of Thrones, it seemed likely that the show s various stars would be riding career highs and that the casting stories would be chock-ablock with their names. That, however, was until everyone saw those last two episodes, which seemed to put the brakes on eight seasons of fan and critical love. Having said that, the stars of the show are obviously talented, and they should be just fine. Case in point: Peter Dinklage, GoT s Tyrion Lannister, joined Gone Girl star Rosamund Pike in a thriller called I Care a Lot. Pike will star as a legal guardian (a lawyer or a foster parent, it s unclear), but Dinklage s character is being kept secret.7. TWO YOUNG NETFLIX STARS CAST AS THE DAUGHTERS OF BILL TED FACE THE MUSIC (Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough, Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)The last time we saw Bill S. Preston (Alex Winter) and Ted Logan (Keanu Reeves) in 1991 s Bill Ted s Bogus Journey, the rock stars of the band Wyld Stallyns seemed to be riding high, including happy relationships with their princess girlfriends plucked from medieval times. It s still unclear what all happened to Bill and Ted in the last 25+ years, but this week, we learned that their characters both now have teenage daughters. Those roles will be played by Netflix stars Samara Weaving (The Babysitter) and Brigette Lundy-Paine (Atypical) when Bill Ted Face the Music next summer (8/21/2020).Rotten Ideas2. DWAYNE JOHNSON REUNITING WITH JUNGLE CRUISE DIRECTOR FOR BLACK ADAM (Photo by Vince Valitutti/Columbia Pictures)Disney s Jungle Cruise, based on their long-running theme park ride, doesn t come out until next July (7/24/2020), so most people probably don t even know it s in the works. (FYI, Disney also recruited their Mary Poppins Returns star, Emily Blunt, to take that cruise as well.) Nevertheless, Dwayne Johnson must ve had great things to say about his Jungle Cruise director, because Jaume Collett-Serra has now been recruited by New Line Cinema to reunite with Johnson on Black Adam. Johnson has long been attached to star in the DC Comics adaptation, including a time when he would have co-starred in Shazam! as the immortal Egyptian villain-turned-antihero Black Adam. (It s arguable that Mark Strong s Dr. Sivana filled the role Black Adam would have.) Jaume Collett-Serra s Tomatometer is mostly comprised of Rotten splotches, but he did receive Fresh scores for Non-Stop and The Shallows. Hopefully these next two collaborations with Dwayne Johnson will yield better results.1. MAGIC 8 BALL GETTING ITS OWN BLUMHOUSE HORROR FRANCHISE(Photo by Suzanne Tenner/Relativity Media courtesy Everett Collection)Blumhouse Productions, Universal Pictures, and Hasbro Films had two relative hits with Ouija and its prequel Ouija: Origin of Evil. With that in mind, Blumhouse and Universal are uniting with another toy company, Mattel, on a similar project, this time based on Magic 8-Balls. We can all shake our Magic 8-Balls to see what it says about a Magic 8-Ball movie, but one thing that suggests outlook not so good is that the director Blumhouse and Universal have hired for the job is Jeff Wadlow. Of the six feature films on Wadlow s, not one has received a Fresh score, with 2013 s superhero sequel Kick-Ass 2 earning the highest score at 32% on the Tomatometer. Jeff Wadlow s next film before taking on Magic 8-Ball will be the movie adaptation of the long-running ABC supernatural drama Fantasy Island, starring Michael Peña as the new Mr. Roarke.Like this?
