Release Date: November 19, 2021Based On: The beloved fantasy series by Robert Jordan (James Oliver Rigney Jr.).The Fanbase (updated): Readers have suggested the best fanbase comparisons are to those of The Witcher, Game of Thrones, or perhaps The Lord of the Rings. Season 1 reportedly features a female-centric story, but the series overall is about a person who has been prophesied to save the world — or destroy it.What We Know So Far: The extremely large cast includes Rosamund Pike, Josha Stradowski, Marcus Rutherford, and Zoë Robins and is adapted by Rafe Judkins.Chances It Will Be a Certified Fresh Hit: Judkins has a mixed Tomatometer record as a writer and producer with series with Certified Fresh seasons on titles like Chuck and Marvel s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and also early Netflix series Hemlock Grove, which didn t perform well. But he s also got executive producers Uta Briesewitz (Westworld) and Marigo Kehoe (The Crown), and Mike Weber (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle) on the project, as well as fantasy author Brandon Sanderson, who completed Jordan s book series following the writer s death, and Jordan s widow Harriet McDougal as consulting producers. Also, Amazon has enough faith in the project to give it a second-season order before the first one premieres. While Justice SleepsNetwork: TBDBased On: Georgia politician Stacey Abrams 2021 novel. The Fanbase: The fanbase for Abrams herself, who is worshipped among progressives for her help in recent elections, might be stronger for that of the book her first to be published under her real name (she published other titles under the pseudonym Selena Montgomery).Everything We Know So Far: Variety reported in 2021 that studio Working Title Television, which is part of NBCUniversal International Studios, won the rights to the novel in a bidding war. The article includes the following synopsis: Avery Keene, a brilliant young law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Wynn, whose descent into a coma plunges the court, and the country, into turmoil and turns Avery’s life upside down. She is immediately notified that Justice Wynn has left instructions for her to serve as his legal guardian and power of attorney. Plunged into an explosive role she never anticipated, Avery discovers not only that Justice Wynn had been secretly researching one of the most controversial cases before the court — a proposed merger between an American biotech company and an Indian genetics firm, which promises to unleash breathtaking results in the medical field, but also that Justice Wynn suspected a dangerous conspiracy that infiltrates the highest power corridors of Washington. Chances It Will Be a Certified Fresh Hit: While it would be great if Abrams and her brilliant legal mind became the next John Grisham, her supporters would hope that a successful TV show would not mean she d leave politics. The White House PlumbersNetwork: HBOBased On: Egil “Bud” Krogh and Matthew Krogh s 2009 book, Integrity: Good People, Bad Choices, and Life Lessons from the White HouseThe Fanbase: History buffs who still enjoy kicking around Nixon.Everything We Know So Far: Deadline reports that this five-part limited series, which is based on public records as well as the Krough book, will look at Howard Dean (Domhnall Gleeson), E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux) and the men behind the Watergate break-in that led to the end of Richard Nixon s presidency. Veep executive producers Alex Gregory and Peter Huyck are writing the script with that show s showrunner, David Mandel, directing.Chances It Will Be a Certified Fresh Hit: With these guys involved, it sounds a lot more enjoyable than Showtime s The Comey Rule.Wings of FireNetwork: NetflixBased On: Tui T. Sutherland s book series. The Fanbase: According to the press release, it s a family-friendly animated series about dragons who embark on an evolving quest that will bring them face to face with their true selves and the overwhelming scope of this savage war they are destined to bring to an end. Everything We Know So Far: Ava DuVernay s production company is adapting the series with Dan Milano (Glitch Techs), Christa Starr (Mystery Science Theater 3000), Justin Ridge (Star Wars Resistance) serving as showrunners for the 10-episode series.Chances It Will Be a Certified Fresh Hit: Netflix s animated programs have included She-Ra the Princess of Power, Carmen Sandiego and other shows that interest kids without melting parents minds. So there s a wing and a prayer that this one could work too.The WivesNetwork: Amazon Prime VideoBased On: Tarryn Fisher s 2019 novel. The Fanbase: People who enjoy saucy thrillers that not only ask how well you know your spouse — but how well do you want to know your spouse. What We Know So Far: Kayla Alpert is adapting this book about a woman who knows her husband is married to two other women (he only sees her on Thursdays). But her curiosity gets the best of her and she befriends one of them — making her ask a lot more questions about her partner.Chances It Will Be a Certified Fresh Hit: Alpert is also an executive producer of Netflix s Wednesday, which is about the Addams Family heroine. This might suggest that she knows how to fill this with dark comedy and tantalizing scenarios.Read Also: Everything We Know About The Witcher Season 2 Wool Network: Apple TV+Based On: Hugh Howey s story as part of his post-apocalyptic Silo series. The Fanbase: It s a show about a man who lost his wife after a post-apocalyptic event (no, not that show). What We Know So Far: Variety reported in 2018 that Into the Badlands’ LaToya Morgan was adapting the series for AMC. Howey may have been getting impatient. In 2019, he tweeted a request for AMC to cast Sam Elliot as one of the leads. The project now has a series order at Apple TV+ with Justified s Graham Yost writing and Defending Jacob s Morten Tyldum directing. Dune s Rebecca Ferguson will play the female lead, Juliette, who is described as an independent and hardworking engineer who lives in a ruined and toxic future where a community exists in a giant silo underground, hundreds of stories deep. Tim Robbins plays Bernard, the head of IT for the Silo.Chances It Will Be a Certified Fresh Hit: Yost has spun stories out of novels before. And he s got plenty of material to work with for Wool. But can it find an audience among the myriad of other post-apocalyptic programming?Yellow BirdNetwork: Paramount+Based On: Sierra Crane Murdoch’s 2020 true-crime story, Yellow Bird: Oil, Murder and a Woman’s Search for Justice in Indian Country. The Fanbase: Deadline, which broke the news of the series development, says it s described as a true crime show, a family drama and an immersive look at modern Native American life. According to the article, it follows a woman who was recently released from jail and returns to her life on a North Dakota reservation where she becomes an amateur sleuth and ultimately expos[es] a sweeping criminal conspiracy of murder and corruption. Everything We Know So Far: Reservation Dogs co-creator Sterlin Harjo and writer-director Erica Tremblay would co-create and executive produce the potential series. Other executive producers include Beau Willimon and Jordan Tappis’ Westward Productions and Michael London’s Groundswell Productions. Lissa Yellowbird, who is the subject of the book, is also on executive producer.Chances It Will Be a Certified Fresh Hit: There s a lot of never-underestimate-the-underdog energy to this story that could definitely make it a hit. And Harjo s Reservation Dogs was extremely well received. The Young TeamNetwork: TBDBased On: Graeme Armstrong’s 2020 novel. The Fanbase: People who know (or need to know) that Scotland is about more than what they see on Outlander.Everything We Know So Far: According to Variety, Synchronicity Films has optioned the rights to the story. It s about teen gang members in Scotland’s former industrial heartland of Airdrie, North Lanarkshire.Chances It Will Be a Certified Fresh Hit: It could be the gritty, honest look at institutional failures and teen (boys) with no other way out a la HBO s The Wire.*Full disclosure: The writer of this article is married to Woo (Three-Body Problem). They have two cute children and an extremely photogenic cat.On an Apple device? Follow Rotten Tomatoes on Apple News. In a mirroring of the comic book status quo, a new Hellboy film starring David Harbour as the title character is slated for release on April 12th. Nestled between Shazam! a week earlier and Avengers: Endgame later in the month, the release schedule once again pits Mike Mignola s creation between the big-budget titans of the Big Two comic book publishing companies. And as Mignola told Rotten Tomatoes Thursday night, Hellboy fans are going to see Hellboy. It s the same attitude that kept the Hellboy comics alive and kicking against the forces of evil for 25 years.Nonetheless, Lionsgate released a new red band trailer full of new material to entice audiences with a mix of humor, dark visions, and blood-splatter. They also invited us to see the trailer and briefly talk with Mignola and star Milla Jovovich, who could not be more excited for the film. I thought it was amazing, she said, revealing she has seen the finished film. It s so sweet. I don t want to use the word cute, but David is so adorable. You come off very well, also, added Mignola.Their insights helped us take a good look at the trailer and glean some interesting things about the film and how it is differs from the comic book and the earlier Hellboy films. Here are five things we learned.Hellboy s Origin Is Teased Throughout(Photo by Lionsgate)The trailer opens with another telling of Hellboy s origin. Summoned by Rasputin and his Nazi allies near the end of World War II, Hellboy came to Earth as the intended destroyer of worlds. But when Trevor Bruttenholm (Ian McShane) and the US Army arrived on site, they found an adorable demon child. Bruttenholm decided to raise the lad himself, leading to the creation of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (or BPRD). Though covered in great detail in the first Hellboy film, it is an important detail referenced in just about every long-form Hellboy story. And if you re an avid watcher of Guillermo del Toro s Hellboy, you ll notice certain differences in the new film s telling of the character s arrival on Earth. [Director Neil Marshall] wanted to do his version [of the origin], said Mignola. He also mentioned scenes of Hellboy s early days will be sprinkled throughout the film, as opposed to the way del Toro opened his film with Hellboy s arrival. He did not, however, confirm the presence of pancakes a key moment in Hellboy s development fans definitely want to see on screen. The Film Introduces A New Set Of Characters(Photo by Summit Entertainment)One thing fans will notice immediately is the lack of certain key characters like Abe Sapien (played by Doug Jones in the del Toro films), Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), and Johann Krauss (voiced by Seth MacFarlane in Hellboy II: The Golden Army). It was a conscious decision from the moment it was decided to reboot the film series instead of soldiering on with a del Toro-less Hellboy III. And once the choice was made, Mignola felt it was important not to repeat too many ideas from the earlier cycle.Instead, the film introduces Ben Daimio (Daniel Dae Kim), a stalwart BPRD character despite a certain affliction. As seen in the trailer, he can go from man to were-jaguar with just a hit or two from Hellboy s Red Right Hand an ability that will definitely come in handy when they fight that rhinoceros creature. We also get a few glimpses of Sasha Lane s Alice Monaghan in the trailer. Introduced in the classic Hellboy story The Corpse, she has mysterious connections to the fairy realm that ultimately allow her to become its queen. But for the purposes of the film, she is Hellboy s traveling companion and not his love interest, as Lane noted at New York Comic Con last year. And it is always possible she will fulfill her destiny by the film s conclusion.(Photo by Lionsgate)The Baba Yaga, glimpsed in her chicken-legged house, has a long history with Hellboy. Hopefully some of it will be touched upon as she was an early advocate of the wave of destruction Hellboy is supposed to bring upon the world.Another character introduced in the trailer is Lady Hatton (Sophie Okonedo). In the comics, she is a member of the Osiris Club and yet another person excited for Hellboy to embrace his destiny which includes him fulfilling the prophecy of King Arthur s return to England. It is, of course, unclear how closely the film s version of Lady Hatton will skew to the comics, but considering she is seen telling Hellboy about his origins, we re going to guess she is interested in his destiny. And while Thomas Haden Church is reportedly set to play 1940s adventurer Lobster Johnson, Mignola declined to confirm his presence, saying instead that more Hellboy films means more chances for the fan-favorite character to make his debut. It Follows The Wild Hunt Story From The Comics(Photo by Lionsgate)The film is primarily based on the 2008-2009 story The Wild Hunt. In it, an unemployed Hellboy answers an invitation to join a group of British nobleman known as The Wild Hunt glimpsed in the trailer as the people riding on horseback with Hellboy who immediately betray his trust because, as they put it, the devil shall never sit on the throne of England. Meanwhile, the death of the Irish Fairy king leaves the Fairy folk anxious about the resurrection of the Blood Queen Nimue. Once she rises, she will lead the folk into a war against Hellboy and the world. Also, that bit of business about Hellboy s connection to King Arthur? It could either save the world or lead Hellboy to embrace his destiny.Considering the prominent shot of Hellboy picking up a sword and it bursting into flames, we re going to assume that aspect of the storyline will be part of the film. In the comic book, he is faced with the choice to take hold of Excalibur. According to Mignola, There s an arc that mimics the comic. But as he explained, Marshall wanted to add aspects of other tales as well. Del Toro did the same thing incorporating much of The Corpse into the first Hellboy, but deleting Alice s role in it. This is why Bruttenholm, long dead by the time of The Wild Hunt in the comics, appears in the film. And as The Wild Hunt ends on something of a stalemate, elements from the subsequent tales, The Storm and The Fury, will no doubt help the film reach a more final conclusion. We also expect some of Daimio s backstory, explored in the BPRD comic books, will factor in as well.Nimue Is Not A Clear-Cut Villain (Maybe)(Photo by Lionsgate)If there is one thing Jovovich is sure of about Nimue, it is that she started from a good place. She was a witch in Arthur s day who became involved with the wizard Merlin. She eventually learned all of his secrets and imprisoned him. Fearing her power, the other witches of the day murdered her. At least, that s how it went down in the comics. Jovovich would not confirm anything about Nimue s past in the film except that she was betrayed, but she did offer this appraisal of her character: She s the only sane person in this movie. From the trailer, we get the sense that her grudge is with England itself Bruttenholm says as much which would suggest Arthur and his descendants would be prime targets. But it is also clear she adores Hellboy. Then again, who wouldn t? He s muscley, red, and fated to end the world. Not that Hellboy is interested in any of her ambitions, but at least it will lead to some cool, apocalyptic scenes.London Gets Trashed(Photo by Lionsgate)While neither Mignola nor Jovovich spoke to this point, we can t help but notice the damage London takes throughout the trailer. A hellacious storm brews above the city skies and a creature which may or may not be Nimue herself demolishes the Tower Bridge. Hellboy comics typically avoid that level of destruction Mignola leaves that to the BPRD spin0ff series but it is nice to see some big stakes realized, even if Hellboy quips that they are not relatable. Then there s that shot late in the trailer of Hellboy riding a dragon across a hellish landscape. The river of fire sure looks like the course of the Thames to us. But as Hellboy fans know, any shot of the character with his horns and crown is probably a prophetic vision and not reality. But it is always possible Nimue will tempt him into embracing his apocalyptic destiny. Or, alternatively, the capital of Hell looks just like London.Hellboy opens everywhere on April 12.Like this? The new CBS series Clarice finds us following FBI agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) in her post-Hannibal Lecter career. And it will find the agent dealing with the aftermath of her experiences from the stories film fans will know. “One of the things I really love about Clarice is she’s succeeding in her workplace and as a young woman, and she’s having to sort out her mental health while she’s doing that,” showrunner and executive producer Elizabeth Klaviter told Rotten Tomatoes.Premieres February 11, 2021, on CBS. Old (2021) Night Shyamalan told Rotten Tomatoes that when his daughter gave him a copy of Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters’ graphic novel Sandcastle, he read it and couldn’t stop thinking about it once he put it down. It stuck so much that he began to develop a film project inspired by the novel which would become Old, released by Universal this July. The Super Bowl gave us our first look at the mysterious film with a tense TV spot that showcased co-stars Gael García Bernal, Eliza Scanlen, Thomasin McKenzie, Alex Wolff, and more. The graphic novel focuses on a group of people who find themselves unable to leave a strange and secluded beach that – we soon discover – hides a terrifying secret: those gathered are ageing at a rapid pace.In theaters July 23, 2021. Raya and the Last Dragon (2021) Disney offered another look at its new animated epic, Raya and the Last Dragon, the first film from the animation giant set in Southeast Asia. The movie follows the journey of Raya (Kelly Marie Tran), as she endeavors to find the last dragon (Awkwafina) and fend off an evil that has returned to her land of Kumandra after centuries. Raya and the Last Dragon, like Mulan and Soul, will be available via Premiere Access on Disney+ for .99 (in the U.S.), but will also show in select theaters where they are open and safe.In select theaters and available on Premiere Access for Disney+ from March 5, 2021. Nobody (2021) Give me the kitty cat bracelet! : That s the sound of Bob Odenkirk making a play for mother-bleeping snakes on a mother-bleeping plane iconic-line glory in the new trailer for Universal s Nobody, a revenge thriller about a mild-mannered suburban dad whose inner ass-kicker is ignited after a break-in at his home. The movie has serious action-flick cred: it s directed by Hardcore Henry s Ilya Naishuller and written by Derek Kolstad, who is one of the major brains behind the John Wick movies. The story itself sprung from an idea Odenkirk himself had following break-ins at his own home.In theaters April 2, 2021.Yellowstone: 1883Yellowstone creator and writer of Hell or High Water Taylor Sheridan just signed a major new deal with ViacomCBS and MTV Entertainment group off the back of Yellowstone s success. When Tom Hooper s Cats debuted in theaters back in December, critical response to the film was swift and savage (it currently sits at 20% on the Tomatometer), which wasn t a surprise to anyone paying attention to the internet chatter following the release of the film s first trailer. But once the initial hubbub died down, it seemed like audiences were content to move on. There were much more important things to worry about, after all. However, when shelter-in-place orders began to go into effect across the country during the first few weeks of March, people everywhere scrambled to find something to watch at home, and it just so happened that Cats entered the digital market on March 17. Thanks to the musings of Seth Rogen, who live-tweeted while watching the film, and another writer who received information about a potential butthole cut of the movie, Cats blew up again, and we now have a collection of officially licensed clips that help illustrate what made it so fascinating to so many people. Check out all 10 of the clips below, and let us know in the comments what you thought about the movie! The One That Doesn t Tell Us What Jellicles AreIf you re looking for any clues as to what exactly a Jellicle Cat is, your best bet would be this musical number, appropriately titled Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats. We re not saying it will necessarily clarify anything for you, as the song sets up even more questions than it answers, but it s apparently sufficient for Francesca Hayward s Victoria, who seems content to take phrases like Jellicles can and Jellicles do at face value. The Rebel Wilson Scene That s As Wild As You ve HeardIt s the clip you never you knew you needed to see until you saw it and couldn t figure out if it was a good idea that you did or not, but you re glad you got it over with anyway. Rebel Wilson s Jennyanydots, a Gumbie Cat, attempts to explain what it is she does that makes her a Gumbie Cat. In the meantime, she sashays around an oversized kitchen, unzips her fur coat to reveal another more bedazzled one underneath, and devours a few cockroaches with human faces. You know, Gumbie Cat things. The One Where Jason Derulo Does a British AccentThis is Jason Derulo s big song, which, like pretty much all of the others, serves to shed some light on who his character is. And, like pretty much all of the others, you don t learn a whole lot, except maybe that Rum Tum Tugger will do basically the opposite of what you want him to. Oh, and Derulo can pull off a somewhat halfway decent British accent. The One Where James Corden Eats TrashJames Corden spends most of his number demonstrating why his dumpster connoisseur Bustopher Jones is, as the song explains, so fat. He s also one of the few cats who wears human clothes, though he eventually sheds his tux and top hat to go prancing through the garbage, like every true gentleman does. The One That Takes Place in a Giant HouseMungojerrie and Rumpleteazer are a pair of delinquent cats who have developed a reputation for petty theft and general chaos, or so they claim. The most notable thing about this clip is arguably the production design, which takes center stage as Mungo, Rumple, and Victoria do somersaults on oversized bedroom furniture, slide down bannisters, and crawl around on a giant dinner table. It actually looks kind of fun.The One Where Ian McKellen Gets MetaIan McKellen musters all of the world-weariness he can to sing the song of Gus, an old theater cat reminiscing on his past accomplishments, and of course, he makes it easy to believe that all the other cats would sit around in awe as he tells his stories. He also gets to sing the shockingly self-aware line, The theater is certainly not what it was, and he sells it without a hint of irony. In other words, Ian McKellen is incredible no matter how furry he is, and no one else could have played Gus.The One with Tap DancingSteven McRae makes the most of his appearance here as Skimbleshanks, the Railway Cat, tap dancing his way through train cars and across the tracks. The song that accompanies him is predictably meaningless, but as a showcase for his abilities, it s pretty great. The One With Taylor Swift and Nude Idris ElbaOh, that s right. Taylor Swift is in this movie. Her British accent is decidedly less effective than Jason Derulo s, but when you ve got magical catnip and nude cat Idris Elba to distract viewers, no one is likely to notice. The One With Magic and Awkward NuzzlesThis is the first of the clips in which we actually hear Dame Judi Dench s voice, as she sings the praises of Laurie Davidson s Mr. Mistoffelees, a magician cat with a penchant for awkward neck nuzzles and nose kisses. He also shoots playing cards out of his top hat and flowers out of his sleeves. Because he s magic. The One With Jennifer Hudson s SnotCats culminates in this moment, the iconic song that has been covered and parodied countless times. Jennifer Hudson belts it out with the requisite emotion, and it s shot with an air of reverence, but the computer effects and the copious upper-lip snot are admittedly a little distracting. It s the big finale the movie deserves.Cats is available to own now on FandangoNOW, Amazon, Google, iTunes, and Vudu.

That s essentially the log line for this supernatural horror film, which centers on an alien child who crash-lands on Earth, finds a home with two loving human parents, and eventually grows up to become an agent of terror. But that backlash seems to have died down a bit, leaving fans curious and even a little cautiously optimistic. We ll just have to wait and see how it turns out.5b. Though it s difficult to say whether or not Rocketman will experience the kind of success that Bohemian Rhapsody did, it certainly appeals to the same audience, and it makes for a nice bit of counterprogramming for Godzilla: King of the Monsters.Like this? During Awards Season, Rotten Tomatoes editor Jacqueline Coley will be reporting on the big contenders, the most important ceremonies, and surprise shifts in the race towards Oscar gold.If Toronto and Telluride start the awards conversation, the first two big indie awards nominations of the year start to put that chatter into sharper focus – showing which titles are actually going to do more than get people talking. On Friday, November 16, Crazy Rich Asians actress Gemma Chan and Private Life’s Molly Shannon will unveil The Film Independent Spirit Awards 2019 nominees, and later this month, The Gotham Awards will hold their annual ceremony honoring the lifetime achievements of Willem Dafoe, Rachel Weisz, and Paul Greengrass, alongside their category winners. Keep a close eye on the winners. In recent years, indie darlings Moonlight and Spotlight won big at both ceremonies and ended the season with a Best Picture win, beating out bigger-budget commercial frontrunners.  With the Gotham Awards kicking things off later this month and the Independent Spirits holding their ceremony the night before the Oscars, let’s take a closer look at these two indie awards shows that effectively bookend the season and examine how well they signal future Oscar accolades.Gotham Awards(Photo by Roy Rochlin/Getty Images)Established: 1991Nominations Announced: October 18Ceremony: Monday, November 26, 2018Voting Body: Contenders are nominated by a jury of film critics, journalists, festival programmers, and film curators; a separate jury of filmmakers, writers, producers, and film crew members vote on the winner. Both juries are primarily composed of New York or Northeastern-based industry folk.Criteria: Films made with an economy of means, though no specific dollar amount is listed.Comparable Oscar Categories: Best Feature, Best Documentary, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best ScreenplayIn its early years, The Gotham Awards primarily celebrated films created by Northeastern filmmakers or filmed in the area; thus the awards were aptly named ‘Gotham,’ the unofficial pseudonym for New York City. However, in 2004 The Independent Film Project (IFP), the largest and longest-running not-for-profit dedicated to the promotion of independent film, broadened its scope to include the larger filmmaking community, including international films. Announcing nominees in mid-October, The Gothams hammer down the first stakes on the road to next year s Oscars. But with nominations proposed by a jury looking to champion hidden gems, the winners don t always line up with Oscar nominations. Last year, only Jordan Peele’s Get Out earned similar honors at both the Gothams and the Oscars when he took home the prize for Best Adapted Screenplay. Moonlight and Spotlight went on the win Best Picture after winning Best Feature at the Gothams, beating out early front-runners La La Land and The Revenant. On the acting side, Matthew McConaughey and Casey Affleck sprinted off the blocks with Gotham Best Actor wins and crossed the tape with Best Actor Oscars in 2013 and 2016. But since 2013, only Julianne Moore managed to win both a Gotham and an Oscar for her performance in Still Alice. The nomination numbers slightly favor the ladies, with 40% of Gotham Nominees making it to Oscar night, while only 33% of male nominees accomplish the same feat. In the end, the Gothams are a good indication of Oscar potential but not much more than that.Independent Spirit Awards(Photo by Randall Michelson/Getty Images)Established: 1984Nominations Announced: November 16Ceremony: Saturday, February 23, 2019Voting Body: Film Independent MembersCriteria: US-Based film for major Categories. Cost of the completed film must be less than million.Comparable Oscar Categories: Best Feature, Best Director, Best Female Lead. Best Male Lead, Best Supporting Female, Best Supporting Male, Best Screenplay, Best International Film, Best Documentary Feature, Best Cinematography, Best EditingHeld in a tent off the Santa Monica pier on the Saturday before the Oscars, the Independent Spirit Awards are the laid back California cousin to the NYC-based Gothams, or maybe just a boozy, low-budget Oscar pre-party take your pick. Last year, Frances McDormand sported a pajama-styled dress suit, and Timothée Chalamet arrived decked out in an oversized button-down looking like he’d finished a shift at Kwik Trip. Dress code aside, one thing is sure: the Independent Spirit Awards go hand in hand with Oscar gold. Since 2009, every Independent Spirit Best Feature winner has been nominated for Best Picture, with four of the last five Best Feature winners going on to win Best Picture. Since 2010, the acting nominations are on par with the Gothams, with about 30% of the acting nominees also nominated in comparable Oscar categories. Winning an Independent Spirit, however, significantly ups a nom s chances, with a staggering 65% of Indie winners winning on both nights.Still, the awards are known for rewarding performances that don t get much Oscar love: John Hawkes, Molly Shannon, Mya Taylor, Shailene Woodley, Ben Foster, and Idris Elba all won acting awards at the Spirits without earning an Oscar nomination in comparable categories. Taking all this into account on Friday, November 16th should drop several clues to the films that will shape the season. This year, current Best Picture frontrunner A Star Is Born is ineligible at the Indie Spirits, leaving Netflix’s Roma the presumed favorite among Film Independent voters. But word has it Roma will be relegated to only Best International Film, even though it was produced by and financed by Netflix and Participant Media, two US-based production companies. If Roma pulls any nominations and happens to win when the trophies are handed out in February, don t rule it out for a Best Picture win. Like La La Land and The Revenant before it, A Star Is Born may be just that – a star that burned bright but fizzled out come voting time. Or it could burn bright. Who knows – it s not even December. Either way, stay tuned Friday to see who gets a little heat from the Spirit nominations.
As more and more people are compelled to practice social distancing and encouraged to stay home, as movie theaters temporarily shutter their doors, and as studios continue to pull their scheduled 2020 films off the release calendar, we ve decided to reformat the Critics Consensus column to focus on titles that are newly available on the home entertainment market. With that in mind, our list of digital and streming new releases this week includes a political satire written and directed by Jon Stewart, a big man/little girl comedy, and a musical spoof. See below for details.

Few industries enjoy taking really, really long extended holiday vacations quite like Hollywood, and when we get to this time of the year, there s rarely much in the realm of movie development news to discuss. So, this week and next, we re going to review 12 of the year s top stories, presented to you in monthly chronology. The year-in-review begins with the Fresh Developments of the year.JANUARY: MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 7 AND 8 TO FILM BACK-TO-BACK (Photo by David James/Paramount Pictures)There are lots of long-running movie franchises, but in many of them, the cast changes over time (the MCU and the Rocky/Creed franchises being two exceptions to the rule). In January, we first learned that, in 2022, Tom Cruise will hit movie #8 in the Mission: Impossible franchise, as Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 are being developed for release in the summers of 2021 and 2022, respectively. The two movies will be shot back-to-back to ensure their releases within a year of each other, and also to make it easier to secure not just Tom Cruise, but also his supporting cast, which may include Fallout cast like Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, etc. Writer/director Christopher McQuarrie will work on these sequels, hoping to match what he s achieved with the last two films, 2015 s Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation (Certified Fresh at 93%), and last year s Mission: Impossible Fallout (Certified Fresh at 97%). Mission: Impossible 7 is now scheduled for July 23, 2021 (the week after LeBron James Space Jam 2), and Mission: Impossible 8 is scheduled for August 5, 2022. The first new franchise cast member to be announced for Mission: Impossible 7 was British actress Hayley Atwell, who probably remains best known for playing Marvel s Peggy Carter, as seen in both Captain America: The First Avenger, and in the much-missed ABC series, Agent Carter. There are no details yet as to where the Mission: Impossible franchise might go after 2022, but Tom Cruise will turn 60 on July 3 of that year, so Mission: Impossible 8 might be his last opportunity to hang off the sides of airplaines and jump off of skyscrapers.FEBRUARY: AQUAMAN GETTING SEQUEL IN 2022 AND HORROR SPINOFF FOR THE TRENCH (Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)With over .14 billion earned at the global box office, Aquaman became the highest-grossing DC Comics movie (worldwide) ever in early 2019, even above The Dark Knight (though Joker came close to beating Aquaman at .063 billion).  That was quite an achievement for a character long considered a joke (including a long-running story arc on HBO s Entourage). Those numbers also made it super obvious that Aquaman would get a sequel and that s exactly wh 10.假如国服手游上线我会不会玩答案80%可能是否大概率会是上线玩两天发现跟其它服一样没什么区别然后跟贪玩蓝月一样点哪都是首充然后腻了

Beloved canceled-too-soon series can often find a second life after they re released on a streaming service or home entertainment platform, but rarely do passionate online fandoms translate to a show being resurrected more than half a decade after its initial cancellation. Luckily, Young Justice: Outsiders, which begins its third season January 4 on DC Universe, is one of those rare programs to find its way back to the air. And as lead character designer Phil Bourassa told Rotten Tomatoes recently, “timing, the fandom, and social media” kept its spirit alive and enabled its resurrection.Young Justice debuted on Cartoon Network in 2010 and featured a different take on the teen sidekicks of the DC Superheroes. Robin, a new version of Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian, and Artemis formed a covert group aiding the Justice League while being trained by Black Canary. As the season progressed, the group added more members. In the show s second year, the story jumped forward two years to follow a new covert team, while the original group found their places in the Justice League. Both groups would continue to grow and change as a storyline featuring classic DC villains Vandal Savage and Darkseid led to a surprising cliffhanger. And then Cartoon Network pulled the plug.(Photo by DC Universe)“Our boss [Warner Bros. Animation executive vice president of creative affairs] Sam Register told us that we created the perfect show for streaming, we just did it five years too early,” Bourassa said. “We always thought that was funny, because it is sort of designed to be consumed in that way — or at least [it is] a completely viable way to consume it because it has so much continuity, and so much connected narrative strands, and our fans picked on that.”The first two seasons found their way to Netflix, and thanks to the emergence of platforms like Tumblr and Twitter, fans never stopped talking about it or asking Bourassa and producers Brandon Vietti and Greg Weisman — who also spoke with us — about a potential third season, Bourassa said.“Whenever we would go to do promotion or whenever active on social media promoting current projects, I would hear constantly from the fans about how much they loved Young Justice regardless of what I was talking about,” Bourassa said, crediting Weisman with “cultivating lot of their energy into a direct appeal … [so fans ] voices could be heard.”(Photo by DC Universe)That cultivation coincided with early planning for original content on the DC Universe streaming service, which created a perfect storm for Young Justice s resurrection. Weisman joked that there s not much difference between the two eras of the show, just that he is “older and wider.” Seriously, though, Vietti told Rotten Tomatoes that the creative team wanted to strike a balance between feeling both fresh and familiar.“We wanted to build something that was familiar to our fans in the first two seasons, but also pushed into new territory, he explained. While the arrival of Darkseid seemed imminent toward the end of the series second season, Outsiders picks up two years later and the villain is nowhere to be seen. Instead, the show picks up with the world facing a metahuman trafficking crisis: Young people with the potential for powers are being kidnapped and turned into weapons. The League even finds some of these press-ganged children on other planets, and it falls to Dick Grayson — who quit the team at the end of season 2 — to assemble a new covert group to investigate the metahuman smuggling syndicate.Members of the new team include Geo-Force and Halo, both characters with long histories in the comics — including the 1980s story Batman and the Outsiders, from which the new season takes some inspiration — but known in animation more as guest characters.“These [are] young characters that aren t really sure what they want to be when they grow up. They don t come from a sidekick type of relationship with an older hero; they re just normal people — ish,” Vietti explained.Geo-Force, for example, is a young Markovian prince thrust into the superhero world after the disappearance of his sister. Halo, meanwhile, is a refugee from the fictional DC Comics Middle Eastern country of Qurac, stuck in Markovia and trying her best to avoid detection as a metahuman in a country terrified of powers.
