City of God really did try to find those moments where we can pause and view these characters without any judgment. No character in City of God is black-and-white. There are moments when, even though we know some of these dudes are ruthless killers, they show us little hints that showcase their youth and make it clear to us that they re still 16-, 17-, 18-years-old at the end of the day. One scene in particular I remember is Li l Zé. He was this ruthless overlord, but he gets turned down at that dance party. And you just see his face where he s smiling at first, and then you just see the embarrassment wash over him. Oh my God! Literally everyone in the world knows that moment; everyone in the world knows what it s like to get rejected. But considering that we ve seen this man brutally kill people at this point, I think it s so interesting how the filmmaker also never intended for you to judge those characters. But he also never wanted to give a romanticized view of their life. He wanted you to fully understand how difficult and horrifying some of those realities can be. City of God is a masterpiece.Really quick though, I also want to take the time, and give a special mention to Ava DuVernay s work. Ava makes the most culturally important work of our time as a filmmaker. 13th is what taught the entire world that we re essentially living in a re-engineered version of slavery. Ava is committed to promoting awareness. Outside of her being an extraordinarily talented filmmaker, she makes incredibly formative and culturally impactful work. I just want to shout her out as well.

Mary Poppins Returns has been showered with love on social media following the movie’s premiere last night, and while there were some critics for whom the spoonful of sugar wasn t quite sweet enough, everyone agrees that Emily Blunt is wonderful in the title role. Not only does she do the iconic character justice, but she’s looking to follow original Mary Poppins star Julie Andrews to Oscar recognition (but can she win, too?). Overall, the long-awaited sequel may not work for absolutely everybody, but in addition to awards favor, it’s sure to be a huge hit with many. Here’s the first wave of critical buzz, as drawn from Twitter reactions, on Mary Poppins Returns:Is the sequel worth the wait?I loved Mary Poppins Returns! Jenna Busch, Legion of LeiaMary Poppins Returns is an exquisitely made film. Germain Lussier, io9I was in delight the entire way through Mary Poppins Returns…it’s a lovely little spot of happy. Alisha Grauso, Film School RejectsMary Poppins Returns is absolutely delightful, packed with old school charm, and it keeps you smiling the entire time. Erik Davis, FandangoHow does it compare to the original? It felt SO similar to the original. New songs, better technology, same story and themes. I definitely recommend it, though.  Germain Lussier, io9This isn t trying to be Creed or Rocky Balboa; it s aimed squarely at Rocky II: The first one, again effect.  Bob Chipman, Geek.comIt s faithful to the original without being beholden to it. Alisha Grauso, Film School RejectsThe movie just attempts to recreate too much of the original and totally fails to recapture its magic. Ben Pearson, SlashfilmDoes everyone love it?I know I’m probably going to be in the minority but I didn’t love Mary Poppins Returns…has moments of greatness but mostly [is] not for me. Peter Sciretta, SlashfilmMary Poppins Returns has some great moments but [is] never consistent enough to be overall great. Clayton Davis, AwardsCircuit.comSigh. I didn t love Mary Poppins Returns. I was bored for the most part. Yolanda Machado, CosmopolitanI think it s a supremely average, loud, bombastic, hollow, mess, from the songs to the story. Robert Daniels, 812filmreviewsHow is Emily Blunt? The only redeeming quality is Emily Blunt. Robert Daniels, 812filmreviewsEmily Blunt is magical. Dirk Libbey, CinemaBlendEmily Blunt is fantastic. Yolanda Machado, CosmopolitanEmily Blunt is perfect. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionEmily Blunt is practically perfect in every way! Jenna Busch, Legion of LeiaEmily Blunt is downright exquisite in a bundle-of-joy and bouquet-of-charm of a musical. Nguyen Le, Houston ChronicleTranscendent, beautiful work [from Blunt]. Clayton Davis, AwardsCircuit.comAs the heart, beat and look of Mary Poppins Returns, Emily Blunt has seared her name in the firmament among the all time greats. Brava! Jose Solís Mayén, The Film Stage(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Are the new songs supercalifragilisticexpialidocious? As a HUGE musical theater geek, the music was so-so. It lacked a song that just sticks to your soul. Yolanda Machado, CosmopolitanIt s not the equal of the original, obviously — and even as it s doing the same beats, it s REALLY missing the one extra wallop of an equivalent to A Man Has Dreams. Bob Chipman, Geek.comOne of the songs is surprisingly bawdy! Matt Goldberg, ColliderIs Mary Poppins Returns a spoonful of sugar for our time?I d been having a rough day before I walked into screen it. Two hours later, I walked out in love with everything again. It s a happy-making movie. Alisha Grauso, Film School RejectsMary Poppins Returns [is] the warm, cozy comfort weight blanket we need right now — prescribed self-care that swaddles us in heartfelt sentiments. Courtney Howard, Fresh FictionI didn t realize how much I needed Mary Poppins back in my life until she arrived. Dirk Libbey, CinemaBlendIf you need this movie in your life, it is going to be the most fulfilling two hours of your year. I in no way expected to walk out on the high that I did. Erik Davis, FandangoIt anticipates and miraculously evades any cynicism and leaves you in a state of joy. Silas Lesnick, CinemaBlendJoy and happiness are all over Mary Poppins Returns. You leave on a pure high. Clayton Davis, AwardsCircuit.com(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Should you bring a hanky?I spontaneously sobbed in Mary Poppins Returns. Kate Erbland, IndieWireDisney needs to make branded tissues for every showing!  Jenna Busch, Legion of LeiaFinal thoughts? It s easily going to garner a few Oscar nods.  Alisha Grauso, Film School RejectsKids will love it, and it will make a ton of money. Ghcxuf (Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures, ©2020 Disney/Pixar)For some, December 25th movie releases have traditionally offered an escape from uncomfortable family time while providing theater employees a chance to make that sweet holiday pay. Most of us won t be heading to cineplexes on Christmas Day this year, though, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the widespread business closures associated with it. Like a lot of things in 2020, it s an unprecedented situation, and movie lovers looking for something to pass the time will instead likely turn to HBO Max s Wonder Woman 1984 or Disney+ s Soul to fill that gap. All of this got us thinking about the movies of Christmas Past, and we thought it might be both fun and enlightening to look back at every film ever released on December 25th and try to figure out if one rises above all the rest. One might understandably assume the list would be littered with holiday classics, but since they re typically released earlier than, you know, Christmas Day, we ended up with a hodgepodge of just about anything you could imagine. Considering they include titles as diverse as Magnum Force, Tombstone, An American Werewolf in Paris, and that most celebrated of yuletide standards, 47 Ronin, it s clear that there isn t any rhyme or reason to Christmas Day releases beyond Let s cross our fingers and hope this makes a lot of money. (Photo by Frank Connor/©Universal Pictures)Before we jump in, though, we need to clarify a few things about the process. First, our data set includes films that received wide releases on December 25th and have Tomatometers, Audience Scores, and reliable box office numbers. Regarding the latter, we had to stick to domestic box office earnings due to reliability issues with global market totals. Unfortunately, this meant older films like There Was a Crooked Man and Friday Foster failed to make the cut due to incomplete or insufficient data. Once we collected the relevant information, we ranked all the movies by Tomatometer, Audience Score, and Domestic Box Office (adjusted for inflation), added up their ranking numbers, and arranged the results in descending order so that the film with the lowest rank total would take the top spot. We know; it s a lot to digest. With the logistics out of the way, let’s get to why you’re here. After compiling all the statistics and ranking all 124 movies we looked at, we were able to narrow the list down to a Top 10. Will the top spot go to a bloody revisionist Western, an all-timer heist flick, or a stylish take on a legendary sleuth? Check out the full list below, along with each film s rank in our three data categories and a little bit of context, to find out which one is the Best Movie Released on December 25th!10. Tombstone (1993) 50 Points(Photo by ©Buena Vista Pictures courtesy Everett Collection)Tomatometer Score (Rank): 74% (21st)Audience Score (Rank): 94% (4th)Domestic Box Office (Rank): 5 million (25th)While we have no evidence of this, it’s safe to assume that many adults would’ve been O.K. to receive tickets from Santa to go watch Tombstone when it was released on December 25, 1993. The thought of watching legendary lawman Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) go to war against an outlaw gang of red-sashed murderers, led by Powers Boothe and Michael Biehn, is simply too epic to pass up. Not only was Tombstone a hit in 1993, but it’s grown in stature since then as its memorable mustachioed characters, epic gun fights, and iconic lines ( I’m your Huckleberry ) have become more and more popular. It also doesn’t hurt that the cast also includes – deep breath – Val Kilmer, Bill Paxton, Sam Elliott, Billy Zane, Michael Rooker, Charlton Heston, Stephen Lang, Thomas Haden Church, Billy Bob Thornton, and Dana Delaney, and they re all excellent. Tombstone is a rollicking good time, and despite some behind-the-scenes friction and director swaps, it s still a fan favorite that boasts an outstanding 94% Audience Score. It’s tough to single out the best moment, as the movie features a plethora of memorable scenes. Whether it’s Wyatt Earp’s takedown of a bully (Billy Bob Thornton in a fun cameo) or Doc Holliday s “I’m your Huckleberry” right before he puts one in Johnny Ringo s forehead, Tombstone has a deep bench of epic moments and characters, which is why it’s on our list.9. Sherlock Holmes (2009) 49 Points (Tie)(Photo by Alex Bailey/©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Tomatometer Score (Rank): 69% (25th)Audience Score (Rank): 77% (20th)Domestic Box Office (Rank): 0 million (4th)Riding high off the success of 2008’s Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. stepped into the well-worn shoes of another famous brilliant person, Sherlock Holmes. The end result was an intriguing modern-day update of the character created by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887. Rather than simply using his brain, Holmes uses his brawn as well, engaging in underground fist fights that showcase his six-pack abs and uncanny ability to anticipate his foe s moves, which allows him to exert maximum pain on his bare-knuckle boxing opponent (is that cheating?).The Guy Ritchie-directed film about Sherlock’s hunt for an aristocratic serial killer would go on to collect 4 million worldwide and spawn a sequel two years later, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which also cleared the 0 million mark at the global box office.Fans and critics alike were fairly impressed with the performances by A-listers Downey, Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, and Mark Strong, as well as the stylized directing of Ritchie, which breathed new life into an old character. We re even scheduled to get a third entry in the franchise in December of 2021.9. Magnum Force (1973) 49 Points (Tie)(Photo by Everett Collection)Tomatometer Score (Rank): 72% (23rd)Audience Score (Rank): 77% (20th)Domestic Box Office (Rank): 1 million (6th)As the second entry in the five-film Dirty Harry franchise, Magnum Force had the luxury of trading on the blockbuster success of its predecessor, but it also carried the expectations of the popular film that featured San Francisco Police Department Inspector Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) asking people if they felt lucky. Focusing on Harry s hunt for corrupt cops who take the law into their own hands, Magnum Force features explosions, murder, blood, profanity, and more explosions – you know, typical holiday movie stuff – which thrilled 1973 audiences who were looking for all of those things. Director Ted Post, who also worked with Eastwood on the well-received 1968 Western Hang ‘em High, knew what he was doing (making an action sequel), and there is no better evidence of that than in the opening credits: the cast and crew list is played over Harry’s .44 Magnum gun, which he then points towards the screen and shoots (think American James Bond) in a bonkers breaking of the fourth wall that tells the audience immediately what they re in for.7. Broadcast News (1987) 48 Points(Photo by ©20th Century Fox Film Corp.)Tomatometer Score (Rank): 98% (2nd)Audience Score (Rank): 79% (18th)Domestic Box Office (Rank): 6 million (28th)Written and directed by James L. Brooks, the workplace comedy Broadcast News was nominated for seven Academy Awards and is considered to be one of the greatest movies ever about journalism. Holly Hunter, William Hurt, and Albert Brooks all received Oscar nominations for their lively performances, and it would be tough to find a more likable and well-written comedy about three people who love/hate making television together. Hunter famously joined the project shortly before production started, and she’s so good you’d think Brooks wrote the role just for her. Also, if you’ve never watched Broadcast News, go ahead and check out Aaron s (Albert Brooks) sweating scene; it’s an uncomfortable moment that features an excellent reporter absolutely bombing on camera, and Brooks plays it to perfection. Glancing at the reviews, you’ll see the phrases “uproariously funny,” “warm and heartfelt,” and “enormously entertaining” pop up time after time, and for good reason. Broadcast News gave audiences a lot to cheer for on December 25, 1987.6. The Aviator (2004) 47 Points(Photo by Warner Bros. Pictures)Tomatometer Score (Rank): 86% (11th)Audience Score (Rank): 79% (18th)Domestic Box Office (Rank): 7 million (18th)Directed by Martin Scorsese, and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett (who won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar), and Kate Beckinsale, among others, The Aviator focuses on the early life of director/aviator/entrepreneur Howard Hughes and his legendary antics. Much like Hughes, The Aviator is larger than life as Scorsese loads it with glamour, plane crashes, and excellent visual effects that blend seamlessly into the period setting. The Aviator was the second (of the now five) collaborations between DiCaprio and Scorsese, and it netted DiCaprio his first Best Actor Academy Award nomination (he was previously nominated for Best Supporting Actor for What’s Eating Gilbert Grape); it also happens to be the first of three – yes, three – appearances on this list by Leonardo DiCaprio. The 0 million-budgeted drama won five Oscars (of a total 11 nominations) and still holds up beautifully, as the work of editor Thelma Schoomaker and cinematographer Robert Richardson give the 170-minute biopic an epic feel.5. Little Women (2019) 42 Points(Photo by Sony Pictures)Tomatometer Score (Rank): 95% (5th)Audience Score (Rank): 92% (6th)Domestic Box Office (Rank): 8 million (31st)Powered by Greta Gerwig’s Academy Award-nominated script and direction, the million-budgeted Little Women pulled in 6 million worldwide and was met with near universal praise. The feat is all the more impressive (and not altogether unexpected, since Gerwig loves the novel) considering Louisa May Alcott’s iconic story about sisters growing up in Massachusetts during the civil war has been adapted for the screen multiple times, dating all the way back to 1917. What makes this adaptation stand out among the rest is the way Gerwig includes a nonlinear storyline and a different ending to offer audiences something fresh and unexpected. Also, bringing back her Lady Bird star Saoirise Ronan to play the pivotal role of Jo March was a smart idea, as the two work wonderfully together, and Ronan received Academy Award nominations for both films. Plus, Gerwig didn t stop with Ronan; she and producer Amy Pascal also landed the immense talents of Meryl Streep, Florence Pugh (who received a Best Supporting Actress nomination), Emma Watson, Laura Dern, Timothée Chalamet, and a host of other incredible actors, lending the film the kind of A-list shimmer you d expect to see in a prestige picture.4. To Kill A Mockingbird (1962) 30 Points(Photo by Everett Collection)Tomatometer Score (Rank): 92% (7th)Audience Score (Rank): 92% (6th)Domestic Box Office (Rank): 8 million (17th)Since its release in 1960, Harper Lee s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird has been an American institution that has sold over 40 million copies and been discussed and re-evaluated in classrooms across the country. Two years after its publication, director Robert Mulligan brought To Kill a Mockingbird to the big screen, and it was a smash hit that won three Academy Awards and eventually earned the 25th spot on the American Film Institute’s Top 100 Films list. Anchored by Gregory Peck’s Oscar-winning performance and Horton Foote’s faithful screenplay, Mockingbird tells the story of Atticus Finch (Peck), a lawyer in the depression-era South defending a Black man named Tom Robinson (Brock Peters) who has been put on trial for an undeserved rape conviction.Putting aside the important cultural discussion that continues to this day, To Kill a Mockingbird is an example of a book adaptation done right. Mulligan and Foote knew they had excellent source material to work from, so they stuck to it (mostly), and with the help of Harper Lee presented a faithful adaptation that struck a chord with audiences who saw the movie as a gift when it opened on Christmas Day of 1962.3. Django Unchained (2012) 28 Points(Photo by Andrew Cooper/©Weinstein Company)Tomatometer Score (Rank): 87% (10th)Audience Score (Rank): 91% (7th)Domestic Box Office (Rank): 1 million (9th)Between Four Rooms, Jackie Brown, and The Hateful Eight, Quentin Tarantino sure loves releasing movies on December 25, but his biggest Christmas Day hit came from Django Unchained, a super R-rated revisionist Western featuring a final gunfight that leaves a Mississippi plantation estate flooded with blood. The movie pulled in a whopping million its opening day (Catch Me If You Can only pulled in million) and ended up earning 1 million domestic, winning Academy Awards for Tarantino (Best Original Screenplay) and Christoph Waltz (who won his second Best Supporting Actor Oscar after earning his first for another Tarantino collaboration, Inglourious Basterds).Django Unchained tells the story of a freed slave named Django (Jamie Foxx) who teams up with an eccentric German bounty hunter named Dr. King Shultz (Waltz) in exchange for Shultz s help freeing Django’s wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) from the vile clutches of plantation owner Calvin Candy (Leonardo DiCaprio, making his second appearance on this list). Normally, hard R-rated exploitation films with 165-minute running times wouldn’t be nominated for five Academy Awards (and win two). Yet under Tarantino’s supervision, Django delighted audiences around the world and provided Christmas counterprogramming with silver-tongued devils, flesh-ripping torture, and Leo DiCaprio monologuing about skulls.2. Catch Me If You Can (2002) 15 Points(Photo by ©DreamWorks courtesy Everett Collection)Tomatometer Score (Rank): 96% (4th)Audience Score (Rank): 89% (9th)Domestic Box Office (Rank): 7 million (2nd)It wasn’t a hard sell to get audiences into theaters to watch Catch Me If You Can in 2002. Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio (and that makes three!), Catch Me If You Can is a rollicking film about Frank W. Abagnale Jr. (DiCaprio), a likable con man being chased around the world by Carl Hanratty (Hanks), a likable FBI agent who really wants to, well, catch him. During the globe-trotting caper, we also get to spend time with the very likable Frank Abigaile Sr., played by Christopher Walken, whose performance was so warm and welcoming he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. We’re not trying to be reductive about how likable the movie is, either. The expertise of Spielberg, the skill of his cast, and the Oscar-nominated score by John Williams make this 141-minute film fly by faster than a Pan Am airliner. Its appeal to people of all ages can’t be argued because it’s the rare film to receive nominations from the AARP, MTV, and Teen Choice Awards, which essentially makes it the Tom Hanks of movies.1. The Sting (1973) 10 Points(Photo by Universal Pictures)Tomatometer Score (Rank): 94% (6th)Audience Score (Rank): 95% (3rd)Domestic Box Office (Rank): 5 million (1st)Looking to build off the blockbuster success of 1969 s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which grossed 1 million domestically and won four Academy Awards, director George Roy Hill and stars Robert Redford and Paul Newman reteamed for The Sting. With an “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mantra in place, The Sting once again showcased Redford and Newman’s unbeatable chemistry, playing lovable criminals who plan on swindling money from a shifty character played by Robert Shaw in 1930s Chicago (and hopefully avoid a freeze-framed death via a barrage of bullets). The Sting might be one of the most enjoyable films to ever to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards (it won a total of 7 Oscars from its 11 nominations). It also boasts an 5 million domestic box office haul, which would make almost any Marvel film jealous, and it s currently the 21st highest domestic grossing film of all time. If you haven’t watched The Sting, do yourself a favor and check it out, because the A-list star power, the beautiful Oscar-winning costumes, and the charisma of Redford and Newman together are undeniable. On an Apple device? A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019) 95% You d be forgiven for thinking A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood was a biopic of American children s television icon Fred Rogers, especially considering an acclaimed documentary about the man was released just last year and Tom Hanks, who plays him in the new film, is plastered across all of the marketing. Directed by Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), the based-on-true-events story actually follows the account of journalist Tom Junod, who was assigned to profile Rogers for Esquire magazine and ended up forging a close friendship with him. Matthew Rhys plays a stand-in for Junod named Lloyd Vogel, a cynical writer who approaches the interview with the intent of rooting out a flaw and publishing a juicy exposé. Instead, Rogers gets Vogel to open up about his troubled past, and the two come to a mutual understanding as Vogel s mistrust melts away. Critics say A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is, as expected, powerful and moving in its portrait of Fred Rogers, but it s also clever in the way it filters the larger-than-life icon through the eyes of a skeptic. Tom Hanks is appropriately charming, and Matthew Rhys is equally effective as the man whose walls gradually come down, and Marielle Heller s direction offers just enough surprises to ensure the emotional charge of the film feels more authentically sweet than cloying. Just make sure to bring the tissues for this one.

(Photo by HBO)“The Long Night” will go down in television history as the Game of Thrones episode that made “Arya Stark” a verb.Episode 3 of season 8 started slow on Sunday night, opening as if from the backstage of a play, with all of the players grabbing their props and – “Places everyone!” – moving to their marks. It is called a theater of war, after all. The curtain raised on the first highlight of the night:1. Setting the Scene: The Frontlines(Photo by HBO)Taking their position as wight-fodder in this fight: the Unsullied led by Grey Worm, the Dothraki (including the tall one, Qhono, played by Staz Nair, in case you ever wondered), Podrick Payne, Brienne of Tarth, Jaime Lannister, Tormund Giantsbane, Ser Beric Dondarrion, The Hound, Gendry, Edd Tollett, Samwell Tarly, Ghost! (hereafter with an exclamation point), Ser Jorah Mormont.Meanwhile, Jon and Daenerys survey the scene from the distance with dragons Drogon and Rhaegal. Sansa, Arya, and Ser Davos are on the ramparts when a lone rider appears.2. Red Woman on a White Field(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Melisandre rides in out of nowhere and says, all casual, to Ser Jorah: “Do you speak their tongue? Tell them to lift their swords.”Speaking a spell/prayer in High Valyrian and grasping Quono’s arakh, she sets the Dothraki swords – all of them! – on fire. If only Ser Jorah had Heartsbane out at the time. She rides on, drops the mic in front of Grey Worm, and says: “Valar morghulis.” Grey Worm: “Valar dohaeris.” Enough said. The fact that Melisandre shows up isn’t as disturbing as what she says to Ser Davos: That he needn’t bother executing her, because she’d be dead before dawn.An aside: Watching the Dothraki flaming swords get extinguished in the dark is devastating with the final flames frantically slashing as they sputter. And that Ser Jorah and Ghost went with them is, in that moment, heartbreaking. Jorah and a few Dothraki horses and men return, but not Ghost.3. He Who Chose Edd in the Office Death-Watch Pool Wins(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Edd Tollet is the first named character to die on screen – maybe. It’s so dark, that I can’t tell wight from warrior. So many were slaughtered before Daenerys and Jon showed up with Drogon and Rhaegal and set fire to the field, we may have missed one.Brienne saves Jaime, Jaime saves Brienne, Edd saves Sam. Podrick, Gendry, The Hound – all slashing at a tsunami of undead.4. She-Bear in Charge(Photo by HBO)“Open the gate,” Lyanna Mormont screams as the live fighters retreat into Winterfell. Can’t help but think that Jorah was absolutely right: This is no place for Lyanna, the future of her house. Listen to your elders, girl. She later takes down the wight Giant with dragonglass to the eyeball when he attempts to snack on her, but dies in the process. If you were hoping she would be only mostly dead, you’d be disappointed later in the episode.5. You Had One Job, Daenerys(Photo by HBO)Sure, the Unsullied in perfect formation even in the midst of madness was an impressive sight to see, but they also look an awful lot like future wights for all their heroism. They back up against spikes in the trenches that are supposed to be set aflame. Daenerys doesn’t see the signal, flaming arrows from the ramparts keep going out before they can catch, and the wights keep taking out the runners with torches.Melisandre saves everyone’s asses (for the time being) by lighting the trench with her spell/prayer.6. 华体会网页版登录入口 Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie (Photo by Courtesy of Lionsgate (Hillary Bronwyn Gayle))Recent screenings of the Fox News sexual harassment feature Bombshell have forced pundits to recalibrate the Oscars race. Charlize Theron s uncanny transformation into Megyn Kelly is now a major contender for Best Actress. And we still have Greta Gerwig’s Little Women to come; first reactions for that film have been heralding the work of Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh. What was once thought to be a light year for female performances – and one in which Renee Zellweger was looking like a lock – is suddenly shaping up to be a powerhouse. And it’s not just in the lead actress category.Supporting performances often prove the hardest to predict because the category can be stacked with leading performances positioned for “supporting” mostly to up their chances of winning (see Alicia Vikander’s win for The Danish Girl). But we’re going to give it a shot. The 2020 race now features three high-profile female-led efforts with Oscar-worthy supporting performances (Bombshell, Hustlers, and Little Women) – this is in addition to impressive works from earlier in the year, like The Farewell. As with our Best Actress predictions, our list of supporting female performances runs deep, with several marquee names and several newcomers in contention. It will be interesting to see who cuts through as critics groups start releasing their honors lists and we move towards the Indie Spirit Awards. If history tells us anything, it is that most of these names won t make it to Oscar night, but we re pretty confident many of them will be right up there in the awards chatter. So read on as we break down our early picks for 2020 Best Supporting Actress contenders.Don t agree with our picks? Have at us in the comments.Laura Dern, Marriage Story (2019) 94%(Photo by Netflix)Newly announced to join original Jurassic Park co-stars Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum in the upcoming Jurassic World sequel, the Big Little Lies star also features prominently in two Oscar-caliber films in the fall: She plays the matriarch in Greta Gerwig s Little Women and a no-nonsense lawyer with a talent for dispensing prescient Yoda-like advice in Noah Baumbach s Marriage Story. Having two bites at the apple usually serves potential nominees well, with voters picking the strongest of the two to nominate. And though she’s being praised for her performance in Little Women, her work with longtime friend and collaborator Baumbach is what’s getting the most buzz. Dern, who s on the Board of Governors for the Academy, is also a very active and well-liked member, so it would be a significant upset for her not to make it to Oscar night.Jennifer Lopez, Hustlers (2019) 87%(Photo by Kristin Callahan/Everett Collection)Most pundits are still not fully sold on Hustlers star Jennifer Lopez’s Oscar chances, but you can place us firmly in the “J-Lo for an Oscar nom” camp. Lopez, who plays the acrobatic stripper-turned-“mini mob boss” Ramona in the flick, is seductive, hilarious, and deadly. Also, she’s showing early that she has no intention of coasting through the season. (And yes, we include her recent walk down the Versace runway wearing a reimagining of her iconic green dress and her highly anticipated Super Bowl performance as part of an overall “campaign.”) Looking forward, perhaps the former In Living Color Fly Girl’s biggest obstacle is getting everyone to recognize how exceptional she is in the role. We don’t need convincing. Enjoying her best reviews since Steven Soderbergh’s Out of Sight, Lopez switches from charismatic mom-like figure to lethal crime boss with no more effort than she’d take to slide on a new pair of pumps. So yeah,  it’s time Jenny from the Block got her due.Annette Bening, The Report (2019) 82%(Photo by Amazon Studios)There are several films on the fall slate that deal with political themes, and it’s yet to be seen how that will play with Academy voters. Among them are Richard Jewell, Queen Slim, Bombshell, Jojo Rabbit, and The Report. The voters do sometimes embrace the political – Alejandro Iñárritu’s The Revenant looked unbeatable at the 2016 Oscars but was nevertheless defeated by the quiet newspaper procedural Spotlight – and Supporting Actress contender Annette Bening will be hoping they do so this year for her transformative portrayal of Senator Dianne Feinstein in the Amazon feature about the 9/11 torture report.Shuzhen Zhao, The Farewell (2019) 97%(Photo by A24)Before last year’s Oscar campaign, a film like The Farewell, its lead actress Awkwafina, and the script/direction from newcomer Lulu Wang would have been hopeful but unlikely to vie for a golden statuette. Then Roma proved anything is possible, particularly in what the film signaled for actresses Marina de Tavira and Yalitza Aparicio, who were both nominated for Oscars. This is why we’re confident in the chances of the hilarious and heartfelt performance by Shuzhen Zhao as The Farewell’s Nai Nai, the elderly matriarch who is kept unaware of her own terminal illness to spare her unwanted pain. The film is based on an actual lie from the life of director Lulu Wang – the family gathers in China to say goodbye to Nai Nai under the guise of a family wedding – and Zhao is astonishingly good at its center, delivering cutting one-liners and intimate life lessons. Zhao also comes with the kind of Cinderella story voters love: this is her first on-screen performance.Nicole Kidman Margot Robbie, Bombshell (2019) 68%(Photo by Lionsgate)Early word on this Fox News sexual harassment drama is nothing but raves for lead actress Charlize Theron and supporting stars Margot Robbie and Nicole Kidman. Robbie was already a contender for her work as Sharon Tate in Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, but those who have seen Bombshell say this is the performance more likely to get her nominated. The I, Tonya actress’s portrayal of a young, impressionable Fox News staffer who s harassed by founder Roger Ailes is the stuff that Oscar highlight reels are made of. As Gretchen Carlson, the first woman to raise concerns at the network and who eventually filed suit for harassment and wrongful termination, Nicole Kidman is equally noteworthy. Both are a serious threat for nomination. Also in contention: Maggie Smith (Downton Abbey)Jennifer Hudson (Cats)Thomasin McKenzie (Jojo Rabbit)Octavia Spencer (Luce)Da Vine Joy Randolph (Dolemite is My Name)Florence Pugh (Little Women)Meryl Streep (Little Women)
