Nestled right in the midst of 2018 awards season – the one that s happening now, in 2019! – Sundance acts as the unofficial start of the indie season. The Park City, Utah festival, which comes several months ahead of the other major festivals, is still the place for high-dollar film acquisitions. Last year it was where first we spotted Hereditary star Toni Collette s terrifying face contortions, where Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs socially conscious buddy dramedy Blindspotting gave us so much to ponder between the laughs, and where John Cho s turn as a desperate father in Searching broke our collective hearts and minds. Other 2018 favorites Eighth Grade, Won t You Be My Neighbor?, and Leave No Trace also got their starts at Sundance.Though the corporate influence is strong in Park City and the festival is far removed from the fall festival schedule, Sundance at its core remains unchanged: a discovery festival for independent cinema and the filmmakers who craft it. Who will break out of the pack this year? These are our picks for the can t-miss films of Sundance 2019 and why we are so excited to catch them. The Nightingale (2018) 86%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Kasia Ladczuk. )Director and screenwriter: Jennifer KentCast: Aisling Franciosi, Sam Claflin, Baykali Ganambarr, Damon Herriman, Harry Greenwood, Ewen LeslieIt s 1825. Colonial Australia. Irish convict Clare chases a British officer through the Tasmanian wilderness, bent on revenge for the violent act he committed against her family. On the way, she enlists the services of Indigenous tracker Billy, who is marked by his own trauma. Why we want to see it: Kent burst onto the scene with her horror hit The Babadook at Sundance 2014 and has been in high demand ever since. In her follow-up to her meme-starting smash, she puts another twist on genre filmmaking with what looks to be a case of Logan meets Pride and Prejudice. Early reviews from the Venice Film Festival last year suggest the Aussie director has once again staked her claim as a force to reckoned with in auteur horror.Share (2019) 86%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Josh Johnson.)Director and screenwriter: Pippa BiancoCast: Rhianne Barreto, Charlie Plummer, Poorna Jagannathan, J.C. MacKenzie, Nick Galitzine, Lovie SimoneThis latest social-media-as-nightmare tale, developed by A24, has us intrigued. After discovering a disturbing video from a night she doesn’t remember, teenager Mandy must try to figure out what happened and how to navigate the escalating fallout. Why we want to see it: Charlie Plummer melted his way into our hearts last year with Lean on Pete, and with his work in that film as well as All the Money in the World and King Jack it s hard to believe he s just 19. Plummer s joined by newcomer Barreto, who will play the lead. Writer-director Pippa Bianco s film is a feature-length take on her award-winning short from last year s Cannes Film Festival, and has all the makings of a stellar debut.Paddleton (2019) 89%Director and screenwriter: Alex LehmannCast: Mark Duplass, Ray Romano, Ravi Patel, Christine WoodsAn unlikely friendship between two misfit neighbors takes an emotional turn when the younger man is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Why we want to see it: The Duplass Brothers return to Sundance with this film they co-produced. A trailer released early this month shows Romano and Duplass easy chemistry. But Miller s archival doc boasts a completely new take with never-before-seen and fully restored footage of the voyage. And if Miller s last documentary, Dinosaur 13 (72% on the Tomatometer), is anything to go by, this will be a gripping ride. NASA Nerds: prepare to get a little hot under the collar.Brittany Runs a Marathon (2019) 88%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Jon Pack.)Director and screenwriter: Paul Downs ColaizzoCast: Jillian Bell, Michaela Watkins, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Lil Rel Howery, Micah Stock, Alice LeeIn a story inspired by writer and director Colaizzo s real-life friend, we follow a hard-partying New York City twentysomething as she decides to do the New York Marathon. Why we want to see it: Actor and musician Utkarsh Ambudkar had just one scene in last year s opening-night film Blindspotting, and he managed to almost run away with the film. We re excited whenever we see his name in the cast list. He will have some competition on the scene-stealing front in this comedy, though, with Get Out breakout star Lil Rel Howery in a supporting role and the hilarious Jillian Bell (Workaholics) playing the title marathoner. The Death of Dick Long (2019) 74%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute )Director: Daniel ScheinertScreenwriter: Billy ChewCast: Michael Abbott Jr., Virginia Newcomb, Andre Hyland, Sarah Baker, Jess WeixlerThe Dick of the title is dead, and Zeke and Earl don t want anybody finding out how. That s going to be tough – in small-town Alabama, it s hard to keep a secret. Why we want to see it: Director Scheinert s last film, Swiss Army Man (71% on the Tomatometer), showed he knew a thing or two about drawing outrageous laughs from dead bodies. That pedigree, plus the promise of a backwoods Alabama caper, has us more than interested.Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile (2019) 54%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Brian Douglas.)Director: Joe BerlingerScreenwriter: Michael WerwieCast: Zac Efron, Lily Collins, Haley Joel Osment, Kaya Scodelario, John Malkovich, Jim ParsonsA new twist on the serial killer genre, Extremely Wicked takes a girlfriend s-eye–view of the crimes of Ted Bundy, following the woman who stood by his side and refused to believe the truth for years. Why we want to see it: Efron looks unnervingly like Bundy in a still photo from this biopic about the notorious murderer. Our nation s most charming serial killer played by our internet boyfriend? A strange pairing perhaps, but it could be like popcorn and chocolate – you don t know how good it is until you try them together. The Farewell will offer our first look at the comedienne s dramatic chops; a strong showing could signal another blockbuster year for the actress who has just been cast in the sequel to Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.Honey Boy (2019) 94%(Photo by Courtesy of Sundance Institute | photo by Natasha Braier.)Director: Alma Har elScreenwriter: Shia LaBeoufCast: Shia LaBeouf, Lucas Hedges, Noah Jupe, Maika MonroeA child TV star and his heavy-drinking ex-rodeo clown father try to mend their strained relationship. Why we want to see it: Every few years or so we seem to find LaBeouf at the center of something fascinating: The I m not famous bag on his head, the art installations, the Just Do it meme, Sia s Elastic Heart video, that time he invited fans to watch all his movies with him, and whatever he was saying about those seagulls. The semi-autobiographical Honey Boy, which he wrote and stars in, may give us insight into one of Hollywood s more eccentric stars. The Mouse House s streaming service Disney+ kicks off November 12 with a slew of hotly anticipated original series (The Mandalorian, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series) as well as some original films, the most exciting of which for many fans is its live-action remake of the 1955 animated classic Lady and the Tramp. Ahead of the movie s release on Disney+, we sat down with four of its stars: Tessa Thompson and Justin Theroux, who provide the voices of lead romantic duo Lady and Tramp, as well as the canines who play those charming dogs on screen, Rose and Monte. (Yes, we interviewed the dogs). We asked the humans all the usual things – what they loved about the original film, whether we might see more of Thompson on Disney+ in a Valkyrie spin-off – and got into the serious stuff with Rose and Monte. mics character — set to debut after the network’s winter break. 2020 will also see the debut of Stargirl on DC Universe, the return of Doom Patrol, and one or two more surprises. But looking at the upcoming Fall season, there’s still plenty to keep us busy. The Arrowverse will be facing the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover while Riverdale forecasts a world without Jughead. It is a time of Walkers, Titans, and a couple of new women making their mark on the Comics on TV landscape. So let’s take a look at what the 2019 fall season has to offer. And as we did last year, we’ll offer some comic book recommendations with thematic or direct ties to each show.Titans: Season 2 (2019) 81% Returns: September 6 on DC UniverseWhat to Expect: Once Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) breaks free of Trigon’s (Seamus Dever) grasp, he will reopen Titans Tower and reestablish the team with Rachel (Teagan Croft), Kori (Anna Diop), Gar (Ryan Potter), Jason (Curran Walters), and Donna (Conor Leslie). Hawk (Alan Ritchson) and Dove (Minka Kelly) may also join the new team, but their status is a little more up in the air following their fight with the Nuclear Family. Meanwhile, Deathstroke’s (Esai Morales) children Jericho (Chella Man) and Rose (Chelsea Zhang) escape from his grasp to train with the Titans. It is a move fraught with danger as the legendary assassin is the reason Dick ended the team five year ago. What any of this has to do with the Superboy (Joshua Orpin) who escaped from Cadmus is anyone’s guess.Suggested Reading: The New Teen Titans: The Judas Contract by Marv Wolfman, George Perez, Ernie Colon, and Adrienne Roy () % Debuts: September 25 on ABCWhat to Expect: Dex Parios (Cobie Smulders) is a walking trainwreck. She’s not over what happened in Afghanistan, and she’s not all that great at keeping a job. But her actual skill set makes her the perfect private investigator for the greater Portland, Oregon, area. When not on a case, she also makes sure her brother Ansel (Cole Sibus) has a roof over his head and gets to his job at her pal Grey’s (Jake Johnson) new bar. Things may finally turn around for Dex, but her old war wounds may need to bleed a little bit more before they can heal.Suggested Reading: Stumptown Vol. 1 by Greg Rucka, Matthew Southworth, and Lee Loughridge.Batwoman: Season 1 (2019) 80% Debuts: October 6 on The CWWhat to Expect: Kate Kane (Ruby Rose) returns to Gotham City when she learns her ex-girlfriend Sophie (Meagan Tandy) has been abducted by a new gang themed after Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. It is not an easy return as she and her father (Dougray Scott) are not on the best of terms and she can barely tolerate his wife, Catherine (Elizabeth Anweis). But as Bruce Wayne’s only living relative, Kate has strong ties to the city and even to Wayne Tower itself, where she may find the tools to remind Gotham that it is defended.Suggested Reading: Batwoman: Elegy by Greg Rucka, J.H. Williams III, and Dave StewartThe Walking Dead: Season 10 (2019) 77% Returns: October 6 on AMCWhat to Expect: Following the Whisperer massacre at the fair, the various Virginia communities plan for war. Michonne (Danai Gurira) will also make her final appearance on the series during the season. Kevin Carroll and Juan Javier Cardenas join Darryl’s band as Virgil and Dante, while Thora Birch joins the Whisperers as Gamma.Suggested Reading: The Walking Dead Vol. 25: No Turning Back by Robert Kirkman, Charlie Adlard, Stenfano Gaudiano, and Cliff Rathburn.Supergirl: Season 5 (2019) 92% Returns: October 6 on The CWWhat to Expect: Leviathan is coming. The shadowy criminal organization is causing plenty of trouble over in the DC Comics Universe, and it should be no different on the Arrowverse’s Earth-38. Meanwhile, Lena (Katie McGrath) has it out for Kara (Melissa Benoist) now that she knows the truth. Will Leviathan use her anger and her technology against Supergirl and the world? Meanwhile, James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) will be saying his goodbyes to National City while Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan) will be making a return to the 21st Century. On the couples front, both Nia (Nicole Maines) and Brainy (Jesse Rath) and Alex (Chyler Leigh) and Kelly (Azie Tesfai) will face challenges in their newly formed relationships ahead of the “Crisis,” which will dramatically change the show in the second half of the season.Suggested Reading: Event Leviathan by Brian Michael Bendis and Alex MaleevBlack Lightning: Season 3 (2019) 89% Returns: October 7 on The CWWhat to Expect: The Black Lightning characters will finally meet the Arrowverse during the “Crisis” in December. But before that, Jefferson (Cress Williams) must face the immediate threat of Markovia and its attempts to create a metahuman arms race. The conflict with Markovia may even take the Pierces out of Freeland for a time. Meanwhile, Anissa (Nafessa Williams) will continue to look for Grace (Chantal Thuy) and Jennifer (China Anne McClain) will become more confident with her powers. Also, Khalil (Jordan Calloway) will presumably find his way out of the pod.Suggested Reading: Black Lighting: Brick City Blues by Tony Isabella, Eddie Newell, Matt Hollingsworth and othersThe Flash: Season 6 (2019) 85% Returns: October 8 on The CWWhat to Expect: Finally answering fan wishes for at least the last few seasons, The Flash will feature two big bads split across the season. The first will be Bloodwork (Sendhil Ramamurthy). Initially introduced as Dr. Ramsey Rosso, an acquaintance of Dr. Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker), he will join Team Flash before his grudge against them explodes into violence. His story will lead The Flash into “Crisis on Infinite Earths.” For Barry (Grant Gustin), the first half of the season sees him facing this prophecy from The Monitor (LaMonica Garrett): for the Multiverse to survive, Barry Allen must die. And in another “Crisis” connection, Tom Cavanagh will play Pariah in addition to a “swashbuckler” version of Harrison Wells featured throughout the season. And for the Ralph Dibny (Harley Sawyer) fans, he will be working the Sue Dearborn case throughout the year, but it is unclear how quickly he will have his fateful meeting with her.Suggested Reading: Crisis on Infinite Earths by Marv Wolfman, George Perez, and othersRiverdale: Season 4 (2019) 84% (Photo by The CW)Returns: October 9 on The CWWhat to Expect: The season 4 premiere will feature a special tribute to Luke Perry, who played Archie s (KJ Apa) dad Fred Andrews and died of a stroke in March. Perry’s friend and former costar Shannen Doherty will guest star in a special role in the episode, entitled “Chapter Fifty-Eight: In Memoriam.” The series will then dive headlong into the gang’s senior year in high school. As Principal Weatherbee “ascended” with the rest of The Farm at the end of season 3, Riverdale High will get a new lead administrator in the form of Kerr Smith’s Principal Honey. Meanwhile, Jughead (Cole Sprouse) will find himself transferred to a private school where he joins the writer’s program ran by Mr. Chipping (Sam Witwer). How it leads to the Spring Break flash-forward — and Jughead’s absence in that scene — is anyone’s guess. Also, Veronica (Camila Mendes) joins Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) in a maple rum business. The series will also cross over with new series Katy Keene when it debuts in winter 2020.Suggested Reading: Jughead Vol. 1 by Chip Zdarsky and Erica HendersonArrow: Season 8 (2019) 95% Returns: October 15 on The CWWhat to Expect: In its final 10 episodes, Arrow will see Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) find resolution with people from his past and head off on an impossible mission given to him by The Monitor. Meanwhile, in 2040, Mia (Katherine McNamara) and the New, New Team Arrow face a new challenge as Conner Hawke (Joseph David-Jones) takes on his adoptive brother J.J. (Charlie Barnett) — the natural born son of John Diggle (David Ramsey) and Lyla Micheals (Audrey Marie Anderson). For his part, Diggle will remain at Ollie’s side through “Crisis,” which will consume the eighth episode of the season. Episodes nine and 10 will form the conclusion of the Arrow story.Suggested Reading: Zero Hour: Crisis in Time by Dan Jurgens, Jerry Ordway, and Gregory WrightMarvel's Runaways: Season 3 (2019) 83% Returns: December 13 on HuluWhat to Expect: Alex (Rhenzy Feliz), Molly (Allegra Acosta), Gert (Ariela Barer), Chase (Gregg Sulkin), Karolina (Virginia Gardner), and Nico (Lyrica Okano) are more divided than ever with Gert kidnapped by her own father (Kevin Weisman) and Chase and Karolina being saved as a main course for the aliens who survived the destruction of Jonah’s ship. Also, one of the aliens is probably inhabiting one of the other children. Meanwhile, the other Pride parents are free to follow their own ambitions (for the most part), Morgan La Fey (Elizabeth Hurley) will make her way out of the Dark Dimension and the Runaways will have a run in with Freeform’s Cloak (Aubrey Joseph) and Dagger (Olivia Holt).Suggested Reading: Cloak and Dagger: Runaways and Reversals by Brian K. 0.92.3 8月喜迎(Photo by Niko Tavernise, © Warner Bros. )Moviegoers are about to go Joker crazy when the film, directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix, arrives in theaters this October. The character is one of the masterworks that comics gave to the literary canon, and his on-screen development into a lead divorced from Batman was inevitable. He has fascinated readers for decades, and as Phillips and Phoenix prepare to finally unleash their character study on audiences, we thought we’d take a look at some the best comic-book stories featuring the Clown Prince of Crime – a kind of homework guide for Joker enthusiasts leading up to release. And to make things interesting, we’re taking Batman: The Killing Joke out of the running. (Because, well, you already know that one back to front.) Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s 1988 masterpiece is the definitive Joker story. It purports to tell you the 100 percent true origin of the Joker – a failed comedian who turned to crime – only for the Joker to reveal he’s forgotten who he used to be beyond knowing one bad day made him Batman’s greatest enemy. And he plans to give Jim Gordon that one bad day, but utterly fails to break anyone in the process. Bolland’s art, with colors by John Higgins, is absolutely exquisite with its dual sense of realism and cartooning. The whole package is the inspiration for The Dark Knight and Joker, even if Phillips set out to create a new origin for the character. It is always the top of any list of Joker stories. But what else stands out when we enshrine The Killing Joke as the unimpeachable best Joker story? Take a look below and find out.10. “The Man Behind The Red Hood” from Detective Comics #168(Photo by DC Comics)For roughly 11 years, the origin of the Grim Jester was not really an issue in the pages of DC Comics. Co-creator Bill Finger and other writers were pretty happy with him the way he was. Flash forward to 1951, when the decision was made to introduce a slice of the Joker’s history. In the story, Batman agrees to teach a criminology class at “State University.” As his students become better detectives, he challenges them to determine the identity of the Red Hood, a criminal he faced 10 years prior but never defeated. News of the homework assignment brings the Red Hood out of retirement to steal the university’s payroll fund. The robber is stymied by Batman and eventually apprehended after some more high jinks, revealing the Joker under the Red Hood.Despite some silly 1950s comic book conventions – and the problematic rendering of Hawaiian criminology student Paul Wong by artists Lew Sayre Schwartz, Win Mortimer, and George Roussos – the story is gripping, with the narrator challenging readers to find the clues to the Red Hood’s identity. In hindsight, references to the hood obscuring “the shape of the chin” and Robin’s use of a “botched” chemical process to uncover a green hair from the Red Hood’s discarded hat are really clever tells. You could imagine a reader either missing these details (despite Batman’s insistence to look closer) or getting excited as the story begins to confirm their hypothesis. Even if you know the answer already, the tension ramps up in an unexpected and pleasing way.The story also has a legacy in introducing the Joker’s early, less inspired, criminal persona. By doing so, it acknowledged that his true identity was a mystery Batman never cracked.9. “The Joker’s Comedy of Errors” from Batman (Vol. 1) #66Sixty five issues into Batman’s run, the Joker’s early days as a laughing killer were behind him. Instead, he was Gotham City’s most flamboyant bank robber. But we’ll be honest, this story is famous – or infamous – thanks to the way language changes, making a single word used throughout the story seem like the title character is playing a long-game practical joke on readers across the decades. That word? “Boner.” At the time, it was synonymous with “a screw-up,” not “an erection.” We’re not sure when the meaning completely changed (although we suspect it was sometime in the 1980s), but it seems writer Bill Finger was unaware of its randy connotation back in the 1950s.Then again, maybe he was having a laugh alongside the Joker. In the story, the Joker commits a silly blunder during a robbery, which makes him the butt of a running joke around town, with even newspaper headlines referencing his boner. Aggravated, he sets out to make Gotham “rue the day they mentioned the word ‘boner’” by committing crimes based on famous blunders in history. His primary target is, of course, Batman, who falls for the trap in order to find Joker’s hideout and take him into custody.Published the same year as “The Man Behind the Red Hood,” there’s something archly mid-century about the whole thing, particularly in the innocence surrounding the now-ribald term. But it is also a window into what the Comics Code Authority-sanctioned version of Joker looked like. Without his original murderous drives, these were the sorts of shenanigans he concerned himself with for almost 25 years before homicide returned to his tight five-minute act.But for all the latter-day guffawing over the Joker’s boner, the story is also a prime example of the character’s incredible ego and how it often gets the better of him.8. “The Joker’s Millions” from Detective Comics #180The Joker’s egotistical imperative would be the cause of his downfall in this story from writer David V. Reed (as David Vern) and artists Dick Sprang and Charles Paris. The plot sees Joker inheriting a vast fortune from a rival mob boss only to discover most of it was counterfeit. At the same time, an IRS agent arrives at his new home to tell him he owes million in inheritance tax. Unfortunately, the Joker’s ego prevents him from telling the agent that the fortune is a sham. If word got out that he had been hoodwinked, he’d be the laughingstock of the criminal underworld! To pay the taxman and avoid suspicion, he sets out to commit “ordinary” crimes, but fate keeps making the crimes seem more fabulously theatrical and Joker-esque. It proves to be the key in aiding Batman to foil his foe. Joker s tax problems, though, are never resolved. The Joker’s increasing need to save face propels this story past a lot of other tales from the era because of the way it plays Joker’s fears straight. The last thing he wants to reveal to his contemporaries is flopsweat. While far from the murderous Grim Jester of the Golden Age, it is one of the best character studies of the “Crime Clown” ever published in 20th Century Detective. In fact, the story would later be adapted into an episode of 1998’S The New Batman Adventures.7. The Batman Adventures: Mad Love(Photo by DC Comics)How can a list of great Joker stories not feature at least one with Harley Quinn? Adapted from an episode of The New Batman Adventures by the show’s executive producers, Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, Mad Love reveals the twisted adoration Dr. Harleen Quinzel felt for Joker when he became one of her patients at Arkham Asylum. But beyond serving as Harley’s origin tale, Mad Love introduces a new, sinister side to the Joker – he’s an abuser. While Timm’s wonderful illustrations give the story more of a cartoon air, Joker’s treatment of Harley features all the classic signs of abuse. And because Timm portrays the violence more directly than in the animated episode, it is hard to look at panels in which “Mistah J” browbeats her with verbal slings or straight-up hits her without wincing. As with many of the great Joker stories, he is undone by his ego. But here, the lovely twist involves Harley and the Joker’s fears that he would become a punchline if she killed Batman. It not only saves Batman from a death by piranha, but it allows him to defeat the Joker with one word: puddin’.Mad Love really set the tone for Joker and Harley’s twisted affair, and while it has been over for a long time in the comics – and little more than backstory for the cinematic Harley – this foundational moment forever altered the character into something both more brutal and charismatic.6. Batman #1In his first appearance from Batman #1’s untitled feature story, the Joker arrives fully formed with design and gimmick already firmly established. Even his penchant for using the media to announce his crimes debuts in this story. Curiously, though, this version of the murderous clown is light on humor – the puns in the story are delivered by Batman and Robin – while high on an unsettling grin he both wears himself and leaves on the faces of his victims. Nonetheless, he proves to be an adversary even Batman has to admit is worthy. While very much a Golden Age story in terms of plot and character, its enduring legacy is the look of Joker himself. Unlike the initial Bob Kane/Bill Finger design of the Bat-Man, which evolved quite a bit across his first few years, Kane and ghost artist Jerry Robinson (credited as inker here) had a clear picture in terms of color, clothes, and Joker s rictus face, which overwhelms any panel he appears in. The character would immediately reappear in the issue’s second story and become the Dark Knight’s true arch foe.5. “The Joker’s Five Way Revenge” From Batman (Vol. 1) #251(Photo by DC Comics)After a long absence in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Joker returned to comics under the direction of writer Denny O’Neil and artist Neal Adams. The pair had been revamping Batman for some time, removing the campier elements accrued from the 1950s. Batman became his own narrator and a truly dynamic adventurer on the page, thanks to Adams s style and O’Neil’s plots. They gave Joker the same treatment in a fairly simple tale of revenge. Knowing one member of his gang turned state’s evidence on him, he resolves to kill them all. Batman has mere hours to stop him and pretty much fails. But so does Joker in a scene that recalls some of his Silver Age screw-ups but also plays on the slicker, darker tone O’Neil and Adams were bringing to Batman. The story also presents a lasting legacy for the character: the affirmation that he is a killer. The Joker may have spent decades attempting zany clown-themed robberies, but at his heart, he is something far more grotesque. From this point on, he would always be a murderer.4. Batman: The Man Who LaughsEd Brubaker and Doug Mahnke’s 2005 retelling of the Batman #1 story benefits from all the advancements in comics over the course of 66 years. Mahnke’s art underscores the unsettling nature of the Joker’s laughing gas while giving the villain a wide range of expressions. Brubaker’s script, meanwhile, highlights how far both Batman and Commissioner Gordon have come in terms of characters since 1939. In this telling, Gordon is still a Gotham City Police Captain while the Batman is a year-and-change into his career when the murderous clown destroys their footing. Both narrate their own parts of the story – as opposed to the omniscient narrator, Bill Finger, in the original tale – and Joker uses television instead of radio to announce his arrival.Consequently, the story gets reframed as the week both Batman and Gordon realize Gotham will never be the home of simple, predictable crime ever again. Batman may stop Joker from poisoning the city aqueduct, but the floodgates are opened to costumed crazies. In this, Joker is very much an “unknowable force of nature” and a thrill to see on the page.3. Batman: A Death in the Family(Photo by DC Comics)Running from Batman #426-429, A Death in the Family by Jim Starlin, Jim Aparo, and Mike DeCarlo was a major turning point in DC Comics history. Jason Todd, the second Robin, finally tracks down his long-lost birth mother, but their happy reunion turns sour when he learns she’s in league with the Joker. She quickly hands him over to the clown, who savagely beats Jason within an inch of his life, ties up his mother, and blows them both up. To read those scenes again in Batman #428 is to see the Joker fully unleashed. It is surprisingly brutal for a mainline DC Comic of the late 1980s.But as great Joker stories often see him murder or brutalize members of the Batman cast, it takes a little more to make this the representative of that type of tale. And that something more is what Joker does after Batman finds Jason s corpse: He returns to the U.S. as a United Nations dignitary from Iran (!), and because he has diplomatic immunity, Superman warns Batman not to interfere with his UN duties. His ambassadorship turns out to be another murderous plot – the Iranian government hired him to kill the UN General Assembly – which Superman foils even as Batman prepares to pursue the Joker across New York. It ends with a helicopter crash and the apparent death of the Joker. But he eventually returns to hassle Jason’s replacement, Tim Drake.Besides the wild ending reflecting American attitudes toward the Middle East at the time, we also see Joker’s callousness and theatricality on display. He works with people as long as they amuse him, but as soon as he learns one of his accomplices is Robin’s mother, she becomes an added bonus in his suddenly murderous scheme. Jason would eventually return from the dead, but Joker will always count killing a Robin as one of his greatest hits.2. “Fool’s Errand” From Detective Comics  #726This 1998 story is an absolutely brilliant tale by Chuck Dixon and Brian Stelfreeze in which Joker does his best Hannibal Lecter impression. Batman is forced into the Will Graham role as he turns to his greatest nemesis for clues about a child abduction case on the anniversary of Jason Todd’s death. The kidnapper served next to Joker at Arkham Asylum and it is clear the whole caper was devised by the clown to get at the Bat.For most of the issue, the two spar in Joker’s cell – although their discussion is counterpointed with scenes of Batman tearing through a mob-controlled ferry to get to the victim. Finally, the Joker claims boredom and just straight up tells Batman where the missing girl is. The Dark Knight returns to Arkham shortly thereafter to learn the why the Joker was willing to offer a life-saving tip. His answer is one of the cruelest and most ingenious punchlines the failed comedian ever devised so much so, we don’t want to spoil it other than to say it may actually be the archfiend’s masterpiece. The story may not have a lasting legacy, but it is a prime example of the character’s intelligence and tenacity. He crafts a long game (in which no one gets killed) to deliver a punishing blow upon his nemesis.1. Batman: White KnightThere have been a handful of “Joker goes straight” stories over the years, but none are as sprawling, effective, or as richly detailed as Sean Murphy’s 2017-2018 miniseries, Batman: White Knight. In it, an increasingly unhinged Batman forces the Joker to ingest a mysterious antipsychotic drug at a disused lab. Video of the incident goes viral, causing Gotham to lose faith in its Dark Knight. Meanwhile, the drug suppresses Joker and allows his original persona – Jack Napier – to take control. Their methods may be quite different, for the most part, but Jack and Joker want the exact same thing: command of Gotham. And so Jack sets out to amass legal and political power to become its white knight. The premise leads to sublime character studies of the Joker, Batman, and a few other members of the Batman cast. The story is also filled with great action sequences and big emotions. It may also be the best Harley Quinn story to date.Murphy’s art sets his Gotham apart from any other you’ve seen. But as he also draws inspiration from the Batman feature films, Batman: The Animated Series, and 80 years of Batman comics, the world feels immediately familiar. His decision to make Jack Napier the person under the Joker’s greasepaint – and his decision to make Jack one of the story’s two surprising heroes – makes absolute sense by page 20. In some ways, it serves as the reverse of The Killing Joke. Where that story sets out to make Joker an unknowable force – his real memories are a mystery to him – White Knight offers an intimate look at the man inside and reveals a possibility for redemption. Besides being a cracking great Joker story, it may be the best Batman story told since the turn of the century.Like this? Thanks to Murphy’s initial Instagram post, we do have a roster of AHS: 1984 cast members. They include regulars from AHS and other Murphy series, and some new faces. Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, John Carroll Lynch, Leslie Grossman, Cody Fern, Matthew Morrison, Angelica Ross, DeRon Horton, Zach Villa, and Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy (making his acting debut) will all appear. Please tell us those are their actual costumes in the series!THE COUNSELORS ARE EXPERIMENTINGSex = Death was the equation of the Friday the 13th movies. Jason Voorhees would punish counselors for hooking up, mainly because he drowned while counselors were busy having sex. In Murphy s updated version of the 1984 slasher, that includes same-sex pairs exploring their desires. Unfortunately, they’ll probably share the same fate as Jason s victims.WE KNOW WHO THE KILLER IS OR AT LEAST WE THINK WE DOWe’ve seen images of the AHS: 1984 killer in his hooded slicker and his weapon of choice, the curved scythe. Now the trailer reveals his origins: Mr. Jingles escaped from a mental hospital one rainy night, and he’s returning to the campsite of his previous legendary massacre.AHS: 1984 REMEMBERS THE VALUES OF PEDESTRIANSWhen you think about ‘80s slasher movies, you think about masked killers and teenage victims. American Horror Story remembers much more, like how pedestrians would often cause problems for our victims — er, heroes — on the way to their fateful destinations. Think: the hitchhiker in Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the locals warning them to turn back, or the fisherman in I Know What You Did Last Summer. AHS: 1984 has a pedestrian the campers hit with their car and a local who warns them, “You’re all gonna die.”A WES CRAVEN VETERAN APPEARS THIS SEASON(Photo by Fox)Wes Craven made Freddy Krueger a household name, but AHS: 1984 found a deeper Wes Craven cut. The X-Files veteran Mitch Pileggi starred as Horace Pinker in Craven’s Shocker, about a killer who used the power of electricity to transfer his soul into other bodies, and eventually into your TV set. In AHS, Pileggi (pictured above in Fox s X-Files revival) plays a hospital administrator dealing with Mr. Jingles’ breakout.WE KNOW WHO GUS KENWORTHY PLAYS View this post on Instagram That special moment when you realize you have an Olympic medal AND will be playing Emma Roberts’ boyfriend on “American Horror Story” Season 9.A post shared by Ryan Murphy (@mrrpmurphy) on Feb 6, 2019 at 9:52am PST

This week s Ketchup brings you another ten headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Batgirl, The Exorcist, The Haunted Mansion, and The Saint. This WEEK S TOP STORYGET OUT THE PEA SOUP THE EXORCIST COMING BACK IN NEW TRILOGY(Photo by Universal.)A great deal has been written over the last 40+ years about what a gamechanger Jaws was in 1975, but that also basically overshadows the film from two years earlier which even more so redefined what a horror film could be: The Exorcist. Warner Bros kept trying to replicate the success of The Exorcist with sequels and prequels, but nothing came even close. Last December, there started to be talk about director David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express, Halloween Kills) developing a new Exorcist with Blumhouse. The original film s director, William Friedkin, quickly came out against it. But The Exorcist sequel isn t just happening, but it s going to be a new trilogy of films that Universal Pictures is spending 0 million on, including possible plans for one or more of the new films to premiere on their Peacock streaming app. Ellen Burstyn, who starred in The Exorcist, will reprise her role as Chris MacNeil, and she will also be joined by Leslie Odom Jr (Aaron Burr from Hamilton, Sam Cooke in One Night in Miami). The first of the new Exorcist sequels will be released theatrically on October 13, 2023.Other Top Headlines1. TOM HANKS JOINS WES ANDERSON S NEXT MOVIE (Photo by Dreamworks/Everett Collection)While we await the COVID-19 delayed release of The French Dispatch, Wes Anderson is currently preparing to film his untitled next film in Spain. Before today, the three announced cast members were all frequent Anderson stars (who are also in The French Dispatch): Adrien Brody, Bill Murray, and Tilda Swinton. The fourth announced star is indeed someone who s never worked with Anderson before: Tom Hanks. The movie will be at least partially shot in Spain, and has been described as a romance set in the desert.2. J.K. SIMMONS TO TIE BATGIRL INTO DCEU(Photo by Warner Bros.)Last week s top story was that In the Heights star Leslie Grace had been cast as Barbara Gordon in the HBO Max solo movie Batgirl. That quickly led to speculation about who might play her father, James Gordon, with one possibility being Jeffrey Wright, who plays Gordon in next year s The Batman. Perhaps wanting to resolve that mystery before fan theories got too wild, Warner Bros quickly came back this week to announce that J.K. Simmons will reprise his role as Commissioner James Gordon. This move effectively ties Batgirl directly into the DC Extended Universe, as Simmons previously played Gordon in Justice League. Batgirl will be directed for HBO Max by the Bad Boys for Life directing team of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah.3. DISNEY ATTEMPTING THE HAUNTED MANSION AGAIN WITH TIFFANY HADDISH(Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)Walt Disney Pictures had such a great big success with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise that it might be easy to forget that there have been a few attempts to turn Disney theme park attractions into movies that didn t do as well, like The Country Bears, Tomorrowland, and The Haunted Mansion. Disney has tried revisiting The Haunted Mansion (including a time with Guillermo del Toro involved), but it sounds like they re finally ready for the reboot, just as another ride adaptation, Jungle Cruise, hits theaters. Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip, Bad Trip) and LaKeith Standfield (Get Out, Knives Out) have been cast in The Haunted Mansion reboot, which will be directed by Justin Simien, the writer/director of Bad Hair and Dear White People.4. NICHOLAS HOULT AND ANYA TAYLOR-JOY TO PERUSE THE MENU (Photo by Netflix/Everett Collection)Nicholas Hoult (About a Boy, Warm Bodies) this week joined Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, The Queen s Gambit) in a dark comedy-thriller called The Menu. Searchlight Pictures describes them as playing a young couple who travel to a remote island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises. At which point, it seems like it s a pretty easy guess that the shocking surprises in a dark comedy called The Menu is that Hoult s character comes out as actually likeing beets and artichokes. Just kidding, it s probably cannibalism. The director and screenwriter of The Menu previously worked together on HBO s Succession.5. BREAKOUT BRIDGERTON STAR TAKES OVER GENTLEMAN THIEF ROLE THE SAINT(Photo by Netflix/Everett Collection)Sometimes, certain long-running TV shows do not hold onto the same sort of cultural legacy as others. For example, pretty much everyone is familiar with Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, even though the original series only ran for three seasons. On the other hand, there s a show like The Saint, based on the novels by author Leslie Charteris, which ran for twice as long, and even featured a future James Bond (Sir Roger Moore) in the lead role, and yet the show is now a TV history footnote. Val Kilmer did star in a 1997 movie, but it was a box office disappointment ( million domestic from a budget in the same range). Yet, Paramount Pictures is preparing to give gentleman thief Simon Templar another try, and the studio has chosen Bridgerton breakout star Regé-Jean Page, now in negotiations with Paramount. The screenplay is also being rewritten by actor Kwame Kwei-Armah, who is currently working with Spike Lee on an untitled musical project.6. AWKWAFINA AND SAM ROCKWELL VOICING ANIMAL CROOKS IN THE BAD GUYS(Photo by RCF/Everett Collection)DreamWorks Animation has been working for a while on a comedy called The Bad Guys (based on the Scholastic Kids book series) about a group of animal criminals that was originally supposed to come ou

Technically, the fall season won t begin until September 23, but as far as the movie industry is concerned, summer is over. While we still have a few high-profile movies on the horizon this month, this means we ve officially entered that time of the year when worthy choices at the cineplex feel fewer and farther between. That said, a little horror sequel about a killer clown dominated our social polls on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, and earned the most Want-to-See votes on RT by a wide margin. But fans still had room for a sci-fi mystery starring Brad Pitt, the return of an 80s action icon, and a couple of period dramas based on a book and a popular TV series, respectively. Read on to find out the five most anticipated movies of September, as voted by Rotten Tomatoes users and our fans on social media.1. It: Chapter Two (2019) 62%4,955 Want-to-See Votes#1 pick by our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter fansOpens September 6The Losers Club is back to contend with the shapeshifting evil that haunted them mercilessly as children 27 years ago. (Or was that just two years ago?) James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, and Bill Hader lead the ensemble cast of grown-ups, while Finn Wolfhard, Sophia Lillis, and Jaeden Martell reprise their characters in a series of flashback sequences. Oh, and let s not forget about Bill Skarsgård s take on Pennywise the clown, which is officially a contender to enter the pantheon of all-time greatest horror villains. It: Chapter Two garnered the top spot across all of our social polls for September and earned the most Want-to-See votes of any film this month, and the critics who have seen it already have weighed in to the tune of 71% on the Tomatometer.2. Ad Astra (2019) 83%1,368 Want-to-See Votes#2 pick by our Instagram and Twitter fans, #3 pick by our Facebook fansOpens September 20Originally slated to open in January of this year and then in May, before it was pushed back again  Ad Astra s production delays initially inspired some skepticism, but the release of the film s trailer seems to have assuaged most fears. Brad Pitt stars as an astronaut who embarks on a journey to the farthest reaches of space in search for his father, who made the same journey decades earlier. Director James Gray mined somewhat similar territory in his last film, The Lost City of Z, which earned a Certified Fresh 86% on the Tomatometer, and after its Venice Film Festival premiere, Ad Astra has earned similar acclaim, also at 86%.3. Rambo: Last Blood (2019)#2 pick by our Facebook fans, #3 pick by our Instagram and Twitter fansOpens September 20Back in 2008, Sylvester Stallone attempted to revive John Rambo in the pop culture consciousness with Rambo, and while that movie had its defenders, it didn t find the same success that Stallone would later achieve with Rocky Balboa. Nevertheless, more than a decade later, the franchise brings us a new installment, which took almost as long to make it to the big screen. This time around, Rambo takes on a Mexican drug cartel when, in a fantastic display of cinematic bad judgement, they kidnap his niece. It should make for a perfect little popcorn movie for anyone who gets their kicks from occasional ultraviolence.4. The Goldfinch (2019) 25%

Ghcxuf Sophie-Marie Prime for Rotten Tomatoes: How did you become involved with Wayne, and what made you want to be a part of it?Reese: Sean [Simmons] created this show. He grew up in Brockton, Massachusetts, which is sort of an “other side of the tracks” kind of place. He was inspired to write a spec pilot based on a little bit of his background and watching kids in Brockton who were real tough who would get beat up by groups of bigger kids, but not back down.Wernick: You know, scripts end up on our desks quite often. This one really jumped off the page. Sean had such a distinctive voice, and that s really what you look for. There s so much out there that kind of feels the same, and it feels predictable, and this one you just — it was a page turner. It was kind of a perfect mix of tones for us, and fit into “brand,” if we were to have one, Rhett and I. We jumped at the chance to be involved.(Photo by YouTube Premium)RT: How would you describe the tone of the show, in comparison to your other projects, like Deadpool and Zombieland?Wernick: I think it s very similar. It s in and out of different tones, and it s a delicate dance. But real life, it bounces in and out of different tones; sometimes you re laughing, and sometimes you re crying, and sometimes you re getting your ass kicked, and sometimes you re kicking ass. That s real life.Heart is a big thing with all our projects. I think it s something that we try and mine because if you can get people to feel — if you can ideally get people to cry in the same episode that they re laughing — it s a pretty great accomplishment. And we think Sean, as brilliant as he is, has kind of captured that in a way that s really difficult to capture. 😈😈

Back then, Syd was working for the federal government and toppling cartels in Miami. Now, Syd moves to Los Angeles (and television) on L.A.’s Finest, a follow-up of sorts that shares her new adventures as an L.A. cop alongside her equally badass partner, Nancy McKenna (Jessica Alba). Together, Syd and Nancy — not named for the infamous punk duo, they promise — encounter action-packed crime scenarios at work and in their personal lives. They might not trust each other with all their dirty secrets at first, but no matter what, Syd and Nancy always have each other’s backs.“It felt really modern to tell this story of this friendship and this partnership of two women in a modern time, in a modern world,” Alba said during Rotten Tomatoes  visit to the show s Los Angeles-area set in February. “You don t have to call out that we re women all the time. We re just people in the world that you want to hang out with.”L.A.’s Finest premieres May 13. It’s the first original series for cable provider Charter Communications/Spectrum, and thus it’s a guinea pig of sorts for the service. The Spectrum Original series will be available on demand for customers of the cable service only, but Union isn’t worried about people missing her show.“I love a challenge,” she said. The proof is in the pudding.”From Clean-Cut Procedural to Rough-and-Real Drama(Photo by Nicole Wilder/Spectrum Originals)On paper, L.A.’s Finest might sound like a procedural: Two cops fighting crime in Los Angeles. But with Michael Bay’s 90s action flick Bad Boys as its source material — and support from Jerry Bruckheimer Television — L.A.’s Finest feels more like an action-thriller series than a clean-cut cop drama.According to its producers, though, L.A.’s Finest wasn’t always so gritty and real. The shift from procedural crime show to action-packed drama happened when L.A.’s Finest moved from NBC to Spectrum, after the team had already finished shooting the pilot.Producer Anton Cropper (Suits, Black-ish) said, in some ways, the series straddles the differences between network and cable narratives: “We always talk about the difference between network and cable, and we wanted it to have that cable feel. We wanted this to feel cinematic,  Cropper said. Especially in today s age, everyone has 80-inch TVs. We wanted this to feel like a 13-episode movie. For the L.A. s Finest team, the cable vibe wasn t just about a visual look that combined TV and cinematic techniques. It also meant focusing on characters’ relationships and emotional lives rather than just the nitty gritty of their jobs as detectives.“It s different for a show like ours to tackle more of the personal relationships and less of a procedural,” Alba said. “You really get to go on that journey with us.”Alba and Union agreed that there were some real, concrete differences when the series was aiming for network distribution. Their wardrobes were more limited, their characters felt more archetypical, and Syd’s sexuality was, well, straight.“In the NBC version,” Union said, “there is no woman in my bed But in the Spectrum/Charter version, she s back!”Originally, Nancy was more “uptight” with a “perfect life,” and Syd was “the rebellious one,” Alba revealed.“It was always sort of keeping us inside of these boundaries and these roles, she said. In real life people, are a lot more fluid… and so that s how we want to see women on this show.”The Series Is Action Packed(Photo by Sony Pictures Television/Spectrum Originals, Photographer: Erica Parise)Right off the bat, L.A.’s Finest throws its audience into the heart of Los Angeles — a.k.a. right into traffic. In the first episode, Syd and Nancy are seen engaging in the most typical Los Angeles behavior possible: arguing over traffic, the GPS, and local routes of navigation. Sure, the series features on-location scenes everywhere from Santa Monica to Koreatown, but its representation of life in Los Angeles isn’t necessarily the most realistic one. Specifically, Syd’s apartment and Nancy’s house are way outside the typical budgets for L.A. law enforcement. But Union says the show is self-aware about the luxury these ladies live in. In fact, Union said that’s part of the point.“[Syd has] clearly played loose and fast with the rules, she said. She hasn’t been an L.A. detective for that long, so what exactly was she doing for the D.E.A.?”In other words, what has Syd done to afford this room with a view? What has she done to hide, or otherwise evade, potential demons from her past?L.A.’s Finest has Alba and Union driving all over the city chasing perps and evading figures from their respective pasts. While the two do some of their own hand-to-hand combat, they do have stunt doubles that face most of the action for them. But the driving? It s often really Alba behind the wheel, Union says.“I’m like, where’s the stunt driver?” she laughed. “And they’re like, Jessica has opted to do it! ”In Alba s defense, it s fun, though, the actress said.Yeah — “for her,” Union joked. “It’s one big anxiety attack for me.”Opening Up the Bad Boys Universe(Photo by Sony Pictures Television/Spectrum Originals / Photographer: Nicole Wilder)Even though L.A. s Finest is focused on Syd s life now, her partnership with Alba s Nancy, and how these women s past lead them to such turbulent and complex presents, Union is also open to including other Bad Boys characters in the mix. The Bad Boys universe exists so we can have these Avengers-type moments where can all sort of be together, that would be amazing, Union said. The door is always open for them. In fact, the new Spectrum series has already expanded the Bad Boys family by introducing Syd s estranged father (played by Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson) into the mix. We had to figure out what would cause an estrangement to the degree where you d never met Ernie s character in the Bad Boys universe — you d never really heard of Marcus having parents, Union said. We had to come up with a mythology that really explained his absence and their relationship. (Photo by Spectrum Originals)From the get-go, it was Union leading the charge on reintroducing Syd s story and incorporating Nancy in the series.“It really did start with Gabrielle,  L.A. s Finest co-executive producers and writer Brandon Margolis (pictured above left). Margolis said that he and his writing partner and fellow showrunner, Brandon Sonnier (above right), met with Union to pitch a Syd-centric TV series, and everything grew from there.“It was a real blessing to have these two strong women who can do the action, but equally hit the comedy timing and those comedy beats and moments, which are a real hallmark of the Bad Boys universe,” Sonnier said during our set visit in February.Sonnier expressed a real appreciation of Alba and Union s chemistry, too.“They right off the bat had a trust and a camaraderie, he said. They came in as equals and it immediately showed up on the screen.”(Later in February, Sonnier and Margolis were involved in an on-set accident that resulted in Sonnier s leg being partially amputated, but is still working, according to an interview Charter Content Chief Katherine Pope gave to Cablefax.com this month: He was at our final mix and in editing we treasure him. )(Photo by Sony Pictures Television/Spectrum Originals, Photographer: Erica Parise)The duo s on-screen chemistry is a translation of their real-life naughty sense of humor, as Union explained it.Alba described the show s creative working environment: “During the pilot we did a lot of ad-libbing and we would just riff off each other.”More than inside jokes, though, the two are committed to fostering a behind-the-scenes space that accommodates their lives as mothers, too.“I needed somebody that was gonna be on board with a new way of filming, a new way of doing this Hollywood thing,” Union said. And when Alba decorated her trailer as a nursery to prepare for her new baby, Union knew she’d picked the right partner. To hear their fellow producers and costars tell it, everyone benefits from that parent-safe and accommodating environment. Ryan McPartlin, who plays Nancy’s husband, Ryan, has also brought his kids — 9- and 12-year-old boys — to set.“God forbid, it s probably gonna make them want to become actors,” McPartlin joked.Partners in Crime — On-Screen and Off(Photo by Sony Pictures Television/Spectrum Originals, Photographer: Ron Batzdorff)In addition to starring in the series, Alba and Union are also executive producers. It was Union who recruited Alba to be her partner on- and off-screen. Union knew she wanted a “boss, badass woman” to be her co-star — someone who would be confident in the middle of action scenes and voicing her opinion behind the scenes, too.“There s not too many women that run a billion-dollar company, have established iconic characters, who can kick ass, who has the same work ethic I do, who s not afraid to speak her mind,” Union said. “There s only one Jessica Alba. So that s why I started calling and begging… Sending tequila.”L.A’s Finest premieres Monday, May 13 on Spectrum on Demand.Like this?
