The television landscape for comic book shows has changed since last year. In August of 2018, 14 shows were set to debut or return on broadcast channels and streaming services. This year, the number has shrunk to 10. Although that number may be a little misleading with DC’s Legends of Tomorrow moving to a mid-season return and The CW’s Katy Keene — based on the Archie Co (Photo by © Warner Bros. )Was Jim Carrey’s 1994 the single best year for a relative newcomer to the big screen ever? Or was it just the single best year for any actor – period? Consider that in this 12-month span, the In Living Color star appeared in three movies that were smash hits at the time and have gone on to become comedy classics: The Mask, Dumb Dumber, and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Each would spawn catchphrases, sequels, and remain in the pop culture conversation almost three decades on, but only one stands out from the otherwise-Fresh pack for earning itself a big green splat on our Tomatometer. That film is Ave Ventura, which featured arguably Jim Carrey’s most Jim Carrey performance, a fact that split critics almost evenly – the movie is Rotten at 49% – between those who were repelled by his rubber-faced gonzo efforts and those who felt Carrey was the best thing about this sophomoric story of a stolen football mascot and the quest to track it down. (Still, reviews were kinder to the 1994 movie than they were to its sequel, released just a year later: Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls was slapped with a Rotten Tomatometer score of just 25%.)Were the critics talking out of their… ahem, asses? Or are these widely beloved films genuine loooooosers when we take a clear-eyed look back at them? That’s what we’re asking in the latest episode of our podcast, Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong (A Podcast from Rotten Tomatoes), in which we tackle two movies for the first time ever: Ace Ventura and its bigger-budget, higher-concept, maybe-funnier(?) sequel. With all that film to tackle, we had to bring in the big guns, and this week joining our hosts Mark Ellis and Jacqueline Coley is stand-up comedian, actor, and director of the new – Fresh! – film, The Opening Act, Steve Byrne. In the ep, they talk about the epic talent of Jim Carrey, the challenge of comedy that doesn’t always age well – yes, we get into the problematic stuff here – and whether comedy sequels are inherently cursed. All in the quest to answer that question we ask every week: Was Rotten Tomatoes wrong? In this case: twice?!Listen Now:  Spotify |  Apple Podcasts  |  Stitcher  |  TuneIn  |  Google Podcasts | Radio Public | Deezer | iHeart | Art19Check in every Thursday for a new episode of Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong (A Podcast From Rotten Tomatoes). Each week, hosts Jacqueline and Mark and guests go deep and settle the score on some of the most beloved – and despised – movies and TV shows ever made, directly taking on the statement we hear from so many fans: “Rotten Tomatoes is wrong.”Episode one:  Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About  Spider-Man 3Episode two:  Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About  Mortal KombatEpisode three:  Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About  Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal SkullEpisode four: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About  Sister Act 2: Back In the HabitEpisode five: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About  The BeachEpisode six: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About  Hocus PocusEpisode seven:  Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About  Vampire In BrooklynEpisode eight: Rotten Tomatoes Is Wrong About  VenomIf you have a suggestion for a movie or show you think we should do an episode on, let us know in the comments, or email us at rtiswrong@rottentomatoes.com.Meet the hostsJacqueline Coley is an editor at Rotten Tomatoes, with a focus on awards and indie coverage but with a passion for everything, from the MCU to musicals and period pieces. For a good solid decade afterwards, action movies were pitched and sold as Die Hard on a something, like Die Hard on a bus, or in a football stadium, or in a dirigible. The movie seemed to re-invent and immediately perfect the action formula, with detective John McClane as the guy who s simultaneously in way over his head and always one step ahead of the bad guy, brought to life by Bruce Willis with a steely glint in the eye, and cynical everyman wit and humor. (Die Hard also turned Nakatomi Plaza into a Los Angeles tourist attraction, in reality 20th Century Fox s headquarters situated right next to their studio lot, so you can imagine the cost-savings for the company when it got taken over by terrorist scum. Thanks, Hans.)The sequels have had their ups and downs, sending John to the nation s capital (Die Hard 2), Russia (A Good Day to Die Hard), and twice to his old stomping grounds in New York (Die Hard With a Vengeance, Live Free or Die Hard). And now we ve taken the entire franchise to rank all Die Hard movies. Yippee-ki-yay, Tomatometers!

Congratulations! You are one of the lucky thousands who managed to get badges, secure hotel arrangements, and find transpiration for Comic-Con International: San Diego 2019. But those successes are really only half of the victory, as you will soon face a massive amount of content in the San Diego Convention Center’s various halls, event rooms, and a few locations off site. And while you already know a few things you’ll want to see – like Marvel Studios return to Hall H on Saturday, July 20th at 5:15pm – the weekend is full of possibilities that may leave you… Well, it may leave you a bit overwhelmed. We totally understand. We look at the event schedule every year and try to balance the fear of missing out with the understanding that a person can only be in one place at any given time. And since we ve already pored over this year’s schedule, let us offer you a few insights into some of the less obvious film and TV presentations, some of the must-see events, and maybe even one or two things directly related to comics at Comic-Con.Wednesday, July 17Batwoman and Pennyworth Premiere Screenings (Ballroom 20, 7pm-10pm): If you managed to nab a badge with preview night, you should definitely consider going to the now-traditional presentation of Warner Bros. Television programming in Ballroom 20. It usually features at least one premiere screening, but this year, it features two: the pilot episodes of Batwoman and Pennyworth. We suspect both shows will be the big surprises of Comic-Con, and this will be your chance to say you saw it first.Thursday, July 18The first full day of Comic-Con features a pretty diverse schedule of programming, as you’ll see from our picks below. But we also imagine you’ll want to spend some time on the show floor looking for free stuff or hitting up the off-site events Amazon, HBO, Fox TV, and others set up around town. It’s definitely the best day for that, but also consider these highlights from the event schedule:Terminator: Dark Fate (Hall H, 11:00am-12:00pm): The first Hall H panel of 2019 reminds us there is no fate but what we make for ourselves. So get ready to enjoy some never-before-seen footage of Paramount Picture’s upcoming Terminator: Dark Fate, starring Mackenzie Davis, Natalia Reyes, and Diego Luna with return appearances by Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger. It is unclear if they will appear on stage, but it seems likely. The Toys That Made Us (Room 6A, 12:30pm-1:30pm): Comic-Con is a lot of things to a lot of people, and toys definitely factor into the equations. If you’ve ever seen the fabulous Netflix documentary series The Toys That Made Us, you know it is a subject with big passions and a huge industry behind it. The series will be returning for a third season later this year, and show creator Brian Volk-Weiss, executive producer Robin Henry, producer Richard Mayerik, editor Nick Ferrell, and production manager Jackie Palombo will be at Comic-Con providing a sneak peek. If you have nostalgia for toys of the 1980s or early 1990s, this might be the panel for you.DC Tom King: While it is unclear how much DC Comics writer Tom King can say about his work on the upcoming New Gods feature film, an hour-long chat with King at any comic convention is a wonderful treat. And who knows, maybe he will spill the beans on New Gods and working with director Ava DuVernay.Nancy Drew Screening (Ballroom 20, 2:00pm-3:15pm): While Comic-Con is the home of superhero-based television shows like The Flash and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., other property-based genre shows are known for launching at the convention as well. That may be the case for Nancy Drew. The upcoming CW series stars Kennedy McMann as a re-imagined version of the famed teen detective, who returns to crime-solving thanks to a literal haunting. The panel will feature a sneak peak at the series – though we suspect it will be the entire first episode – and a discussion with McMann, fellow cast members Leah Lewis, Maddison Jaizani, Alex Saxon, and Tunji Kasim, and executive producers Noga Landau, Melinda Hsu-Taylor, and Stephanie Savage.Skybound: In Conversation with Robert Kirkman (3:00pm-4:00pm, Room 6A): The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman is a lively presence during just about any Comic-Con panel. But he tends to be even livelier when he is the sole focus of said panel. This one should be no exception, as he fields questions about his decision to end The Walking Dead as a comic book series. He will also offer up some info about the upcoming film and television adaptations of his work, like Invincible and Oblivion Song. Considering Kirkman and his Skybound Entertainment venture into television, comics, games and more, it may be more of a well-rounded comic convention panel than you might expect.MUST SEE OF THE DAY: His Dark Materials (Hall H, 4:45-5:45)HBO will bring cast and footage from its upcoming adaptation of Philip Pullman’s fantasy trilogy. Stars Dafen Keen, James McAvoy, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Ruth Wilson will be on hand to field questions about the series and its take on Pullman’s sometimes controversial stances. But expect Miranda to win the day with his seemingly-effortless ability to command a crowd. Also, since His Dark Materials is taking Game of Thrones’s place as HBO’s prestige fantasy series, this is the perfect opportunity to learn if you’ll want to be a devoted watcher.Friday, July 19If Thursday felt like a walk in the park, Friday will be more difficult to navigate, with television shows taking the focus. But choices must be made, and we suggest these picks might put you on the right path:A Conversation with the Russo Brothers (Hall H, 11:00am-11:50am): Though directors Joe and Anthony Russo have completed their work with Marvel Studios, the duo leveraged their success with films like Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Infinity War into a number of projects as producers. At this panel, they intended to discuss a little bit more about AGBO, their new production company. At the same time, expect them to answer questions about Avengers: Endgame and a possible return to the Marvel Studios fold.Joe Hill and Gabe Rodriguez: Locke Key Spectacular (Room 32AB, 12:00pm-1:00pm): Although meant as a celebration of the Locke Key comic books by Hill and Rodriguez, the hour promises to feature a look at the upcoming Netflix series and a possible new Locke Key comic.Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (Hall H, 3:30pm-5:15pm): Get a first look at the upcoming series based Jim Henson’s 1982 cult classic. As three Gelflings discover the secret of the Skeksis power, we’re left to wonder if the program is a prequel or a whole new take on the story of The Dark Crystal. Maybe we will get some of our answers during the panel. And if not, there will probably be plenty of new footage to enjoy.Carnival Row (Ballroom 20, 4:45pm-5:45pm): Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming fantasy series sure looks provocative with its Victorian fantasy world and refugee fantasy characters. But will it prove fantasy is here to stay in the battle between premium content streaming services? If not, at least fans of Orlando Bloom will get a chance to swoon when he appears on stage alongside co-star Cara Delevingne, David Gyasi, Tamzin Merchant, Travis Beacham, and executive producer Marc Guggenheim.Q A With Nathan Fillion and Alexi Hawley (Horton Grand Theater, 6:00pm-7:00pm): The Gaslamp District’s movie theater will play host to this discussion between Firefly and Castle star Nathan Fillion and his friend/collaborator Alexi Hawley. We know from experience that Fillion is a great interview and fans should probably line up early for this as it is an off-site event. What We Left Behind: Star Trek: DS9 (Room 32AB, 7:00pm-8:00pm): Star Trek: Deep Space Nine showrunner Ira Steven Behr, filmmaker David Zappone, and DS9 cast members Andrew Robinson, Aron Eisenberg, and Penny Johnson Jerald will discuss Zappone’s documentary about the second Star Trek spinoff and its odd place in the franchise’s history. The panel will also feature material not seen in the film’s theatrical releases. This is a must-see for all Niners at Comic-Con.World Premiere of Batman: Hush (Ballroom 20, 7:15pm-9:15pm): DC Universe Animated Movies continue to prove creatively and financially successful, and Batman: Hush will likely continue the tradition. It adapts the tale by Brian Azzarello and Jim Lee in which someone known as Hush has figured out Batman’s identity and uses Bruce Wayne’s greatest weaknesses against the Dark Knight. Is Hush someone from Bruce’s past or an established villain who finally put the pieces together? Voice actors like Jason O’Mara and Jennifer Morrison will also be on hand to discuss the film.(Photo by Netflix)MUST SEE OF THE DAY: The Witcher: A Netflix Original Series (Hall H, 2:15pm-3:15pm): We’ve been pretty excited about Netflix upcoming The Witcher television series since it was announced, and we’re going to assume a trailer will debut sometime during the hour. And though not yet confirmed, we imagine star Henry Cavill will put in an appearance.Saturday, July 20Let’s face it, Saturday is going to be about the Marvel Studios panel in Hall H at 5:15pm. If you’re planning to stay in the hall all day to secure your seat, you’ll also get sneak peeks at the next year of Star Trek – which includes the upcoming Star Trek: Picard – and Westworld’s upcoming third season. You will also see the annual Animation Show of Shows and Woman Who Kick Ass panels before the main event. If you still have some energy left afterwards, Kevin Smith will close out Saturday with the debut of the Jay Silent Bob Reboot trailer. Meanwhile, in Ballroom 20, The CW is bringing most of its Superhero shows to San Diego throughout the day. But if that isn’t your taste or the Hall H line makes you quake with fear, consider these alternatives.(Photo by Colleen Hayes/NBC)NBC’s The Good Place (Indigo Ballroom, 12:00pm-12:50pm): Stars Ted Danson, Kristen Bell, William Jackson Harper, D Arcy Carden, and Manny Jacinto – along with executive producers Michael Schur and Drew Goddard – will talk a little bit about the program’s upcoming fourth and final season. Will our heroes finally make it into The Good Place? The Expanse (Indigo Ballroom, 1:00pm-1:50pm): Consider it something of a victory lap. The stars and producers behind The Expanse gather to talk about their remarkable transfer to Amazon Prime Video and what Season 4 has in store for Belters and the like. If you love this series, this is probably the panel you don’t want to miss.Sesame Street’s 50th Anniversary Panel (Room 6BCF, 2:45pm-3:45pm): Modern Sesame Street puppeteers Sonia Manzano, Matt Vogel, Eric Jacobson, and Ryan Dillon, along with Dr. Rosemarie Truglio, gather to talk about the show’s history and future. And considering the puppeteers will have their characters on hand, expect the Count, Grover, Maria, and Elmo to drop by. This one is totally for con-goers with kids or affection for the Sesame Street Muppets.Snowpiercer On TBS (Indigo Ballroom, 3:00pm-3:50pm): Snowpiercer has had a long road from French graphic novel to film and, finally, to television. But after many delays, it is ready to debut on TBS. Join stars Jennifer Connelly, Daveed Diggs, Alison Wright, Mickey Sumner, Lena Hall, Steven Ogg and executive producer/showrunner Graeme Manson as they offer a first look at the series set aboard a perpetually moving train.(Photo by Jay Maidment / © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)MUST SEE OF THE DAY: Marvel Studios Presentation (Hall H, 5:15pm-6:45): This is the main event. After taking the last couple of years off from Comic-Con, Marvel Studios returns to release some information about Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We think you can expect first-look footage from Black Widow, casting announcements for The Eternals and Shang-Chi, and maybe even confirmations about Phase 4 release dates. Since previous Marvel Studios Hall H panels included actors appearing in costume, we suspect Benedict Cumberbatch will don his Doctor Strange robes and use the mystic arts to reveal something about that film’s upcoming sequel. We’re also going to assume the presentation will be movies only, with Marvel Studios holding back details about their various Disney+ limited series until the D23 convention in August.Sunday, July 21If you have any energy left from Saturday’s marathon, Sunday at Comic-Con offers a few key presentations and a lot of interesting curios. Formerly known as Children’s Day, it also offers a lot of programming geared toward younger geeks, such as IDW’s Comics for Kids! panel at 10:30am in Room 23ABC. But if you’re more of a media consumer, we expect these will be the panels you’re looking for:Ryan FujitaniRiverdale (Hall H, 11:45am-12:45pm): It has now become a tradition for the Riverdale gang to assemble in Hall H for a sneak peek of the upcoming season. Will their attempts to have a “normal” senior year be undone by the specter of the past, evil fathers, and their own actions? Series stars and producers will be on hand to answer questions and, occasionally, evade revealing too much about the show.Star Trek Eyewitness: An Hour With 1964 Pilot Director Robert Butler (Room 29AB, 12:00-1:00pm): If you’re a Trekkie, this might be the most important hour of the weekend. Trekland Live brings Robert Butler – director of the original Star Trek pilot episode “The Cage” – to Comic-Con for a chat about those early days of the series, his involvement in some of the iconography still with us today, and his reaction to the use of “Cage” characters in Star Trek: Discovery. It should be a fascinating discussion for those involved with Trek or interested in television of the 1960s.(Photo by Frank Ockenfells III/The CW -- © 2016 The CW Network)MUST SEE OF THE DAY: Supernatural (Hall H, 10:30am-11:30am): Throughout the years, Supernatural’s annual Comic-Con appearance has been filled with remarkable moments and surprises. And considering this is their last Hall H appearance, we expect emotions will be heightened and the surprises all the more, er, surprising. While there will be some talk about the upcoming 15th and final season, the hour promises to be something of a retrospective as well.Like this? 4. 呼朋唤友 随心所欲
Although the opening shot of 1999 s Mystery Men is pure DC Cinematic Universe – the strange semi-futuristic cityscape that echoes Tim Burton’s Batman, the worshipful but also terrifying statue of local hero Captain Amazing that feels straight out of Zack Snyder s world – what follows actually lays out a template for what would eventually be Marvel’s complete and utter dominance in the superhero movie space. Two movies that were released just prior to Mystery Men – Blade in 1998 and The Matrix in March 1999 – are most often credited with kickstarting the comic book movie revival. The Wachowskis anime-inspired sci-fi blockbuster showed how super-powered action could and should look, while Wesley Snipes’ vampire crusader proved you could find success beyond Marvel’s A-list roster. But looking back, neither of those films really fit tonally with what the MCU would become. The real seeds were planted in a silly and underrated Ben Stiller comedy that celebrates its 20th birthday on August 6. Here’s how.The CastOne of the hallmarks of Marvel movies is that they are littered with big and unexpected names, from Gwyneth Paltrow in Iron Man to Robert Redford in Captain America: The Winter Soldier to Matt Damon in Thor: Ragnarok. For a superhero goof, Mystery Men shared similar out-of-the-box thinking, resulting in even the smaller roles being surprisingly memorable. The main team was comprised of an Avengers-level mix of mid- to late- 90s indie and comedy stars, including Stiller, Janeane Garofalo, William H. Macy, Hank Azaria, and Paul Reubens; the main villain was a supremely hammy Oscar-winner Geoffrey Rush, and the periphery was dotted with “whoa, really” names like Eddie Izzard, Ricky Jay, Cee-Lo Green, Dane Cook, and Tom Waits. Superhero movies had come a long way from a time when they were the last refuge of stuntmen and up-and-comers, and Mystery Men took the baton from Tim Burton (who went way outside the box with Michael Keaton in Batman) and ran with it for a bit before Marvel took over. The World Building(Photo by Universal courtesy Everett Collection)Although Iron Man and Captain America: The First Avenger hit some of the expected story points, by and large Marvel got away from doing traditional origin stories. Rather than having each new hero start off in a blank slate world where they’re the only ones with superpowers, Marvel built a world where multiple heroes and villains existed in various points throughout history. Mystery Men, too, drops you right into the thick of it with a superteam fighting supervillains in a city that is so comfortable with its own Superman that he has corporate sponsors. There is a sequence about midway through the movie in which the Mystery Men hold open tryouts (a gag that would be recycled in Deadpool 2), and they are swarmed with wannabes. This is a world as used to seeing this sort of thing as the people of MCU New York are to seeing Spider-Man.The HumorNaturally, Mystery Men was never intended to be anything but a superhero spoof. But its willingness to embrace the core silliness of the superhero concept helped show Marvel how to overcome a major obstacle. The knock against the DC movies is that they are dark, plodding, largely humorless affairs. And if you start to take the idea of people in fancy suits flying around cities too seriously, the whole thing begins to falls apart. The self-awareness to know that humor makes comic book storytelling go down a lot easier fuels Marvel even at its darkest. Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers: Endgame would have been too much to take without the relief supplied by Dr. Strange and Tony Stark’s catty bickering, or Korg’s epic Fornite battle against Noobmaster69.The Team DynamicsAnd speaking of the bickering A team of noble heroes who all share an unshakable respect for one another, and who treat each other with courtesy and dignity at all times… is boring. Like Mystery Men, Marvel understands that teams like the Avengers or the Guardians of the Galaxy thrive when they don’t get along. Likewise, the Mystery Men treat each other more like co-workers than real friends. Post-battle, they sit in diners and complain like they just clocked out of a factory job (and coincidentally, the original Avengers ends with… the team sitting around in a diner eating). The (Lack of) Secret Identities(Photo by MCA courtesy Everett Collection)This is an extension of the world-building idea, but it’s no coincidence that Marvel ditched the concept of “secret identities” as soon as it could. It’s a hindrance more than it is a help – watch how they bend over backwards to get Tony Stark fighting helmetless, or how many times Captain America takes his mask off so you can see his face. Mystery Men doesn’t even bother with masking its heroes. They exist in a world that’s gotten used to the idea of superheroes, just as the MCU seems to be pretty OK with one of the world’s most successful tech billionaires occasionally running off to fight Thanos, and where kids think nothing of asking Hulk for a selfie. The Balancing Act(Photo by MCA courtesy Everett Collection)In the end, though, Mystery Men still allows its crew of misfit heroes to have their moment. They’ve been the butt of the joke for most of the movie’s runtime, but they’re ultimately still allowed to be heroic and win the day. There’s just enough earnestness there to get away with it – had the movie gone more cynical, it would have piled on the jokes regardless of whether or not anyone saved anything. It’s a delicate balance, and a Marvel entry like Thor: Ragnarok actually feels right in line with it. It never quite tips completely over into out-and-out Thor parody, though it comes close. But Marvel had, by that point, settled so comfortably into a tone that both celebrates and pokes fun at the concept of superheroes that it all managed to work. And who would have thought it would be the Mystery Men who’d light the way?Mystery Men was released in theaters on August 6, 1999.

7.96.7 2月喜迎If you commit to releasing at least one new film on your streaming service every weekend in a given year, you have to accept the fact that not all of them are going to be winners. That isn t to say Netflix s latest genre film, Kate, failed to impress any writers at all; it just didn t quite reach the critical heights of its similarly themed Gunpowder Milkshake from just a couple months ago. Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays the titular character, an elite assassin who botches a hit on a yakuza boss in Tokyo and finds herself poisoned in the process. With only 24 hours to live, Kate goes on the hunt for her killers and unexpectedly forms a friendship with the young daughter of one of her former targets. Critics say Winstead does her best to hold Kate together, and the action is serviceable enough, but with the deadly female assassin out for revenge subgenre currently in full bloom, there just isn t enough to set the film apart.
据拳头公司发布的消息确认,《英雄联盟》手游将在2021年的第一季度,在北美洲与南美洲推出这款游戏,也就是说,在3月29日这天,全世界绝大部分玩家都可以下载到这款游戏。
Few movie franchises maintain the level of perfection that Toy Story has. The first two installments of Pixar’s flagship film series have perfect scores on the Tomatometer. Toy Story 3, which was nominated for Best Picture, is close with 98%. Now Toy Story 4 is on its way to theaters, and initial reviews are pointing to another very high Tomatometer score (it s currently at 100%).Thanks to familiar friends, popular new additions, and another deep story involving the meaning of life, we’ll put to rest any complaints that Pixar is making too many sequels. If it’s the last of them, it ends on a great note, but if not, Toy Story can reach for the sky and go to infinity and beyond, as far as critics are concerned. Here’s what critics are saying about Toy Story 4:Did we really need another sequel after Toy Story 3?Part 3 ended so perfectly and succinctly that Part 4 could only disappoint. Except, the film doesn’t. Surprisingly, Toy Story 4 triumphs.  Robert Daniels, 812filmreviewsToy Story 4 does an even better job than Toy Story 3 of managing mature themes while remaining kid-friendly.  Karen Han, PolygonToy Story 4 proves to be a much more compelling conclusion, while still leaving the door open for future adventures.  Molly Freeman, ScreenRantWhere the ending of Toy Story 3 simply deferred to the cycle of life, this finale ties a much stronger bow around the franchise by cutting to its core.  David Ehrlich, IndieWireDirector Josh Cooley has delivered the movie Toy Story 3 should have been.  Peter Debruge, VarietyToy Story 4 is an unnecessary franchise extension savvy enough for self-criticism.  Darren Franich, Entertainment Weekly(Photo by Walt Disney Studios)Could this actually be the best Toy Story yet?The movie feels like more of an action-adventure tale than the previous movies, but with the same emotional tug that will make you go through a box of tissues while watching it. Jason Guerrasio, Business InsiderIn my mind, there’s no question Toy Story 4 is the weakest movie in the series. But it’s also the riskiest and the most pleasantly unpredictable. Matt Singer, ScreenCrushNot as good as the first three, but it also has a very different tone. Bob Chipman, Escapist MagazineHow does it differ from the others?Toy Story 4 breaks from the franchise s tradition, focusing more on newer toys. Molly Freeman, ScreenRantSomething feels a little different this time…. this movie starts — it starts! — with a suicidal toy and only gets stranger from there. Matt Singer, ScreenCrushHow does it fit into the Pixar canon overall?Toy Story 4 is the best Pixar sequel since Toy Story 2. Matt Goldberg, ColliderThis [is] the most fluid and enjoyably kinetic Pixar film since Ratatouille. David Ehrlich, IndieWireIt pushes Pixar into some of its most daring territory in years. Which, ironically, makes it feel like something of a throwback to the days when Pixar regularly surprised us with its originality and its sophistication. Angie Han, MashableSubpar Pixar… Pixar, like its former funder Apple, has conditioned audiences to expect more than a nice little movie. We want to be amazed. Johnny Oleksinski, New York Post

Ghcxuf The NYFCC announced the winners of their 2018 Awards this morning on Twitter. Roma led all winnners with three; Best Film, Best Director, and Best Cinametography. Paul Schrader s First Reformed followed with two wins for Best Screenplay and Best Actor. This sets up quite well for Curarón s black and white semi-autobiographical story of his adolescence in 1970s Mexico, as told through the eyes of the woman who raised him. A strong showing with critics groups early will help propel some good will with Academy voters. This morning s announcement also bodes well for Schrader, the writer of Taxi Driver Raging Bull, to secure his ever-elusive first Oscar. The NYFCC Awards are chosen by a group of critics from daily newspapers, weekly newspapers, magazines, and qualifying online general interest publications. Last year, Lady Bird won the award for Best Picture while The Florida Project won for Best Director (Sean Baker).Read through for the full list below, and make sure to check out the complete Awards Leaderboard to keep up to date on the accolades bestowed on the best movies of 2018/2019 from the press, fans, and members of the film industry.Best Film: Roma (2018) 96%Best Director:  Alfonso Cuarón — Roma (2018) 96%Best Screenplay: Paul Schrader — First Reformed (2017) 93%Best Actress: Regina Hall — Support the Girls (2018) 91%Best Actor: Ethan Hawke — First Reformed (2017) 93%Best Supporting Actress:  Regina King — If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) 95%Best Supporting Actor:  Richard E. This week s Ketchup brings you more headlines from the world of film development news, covering such titles as Blade, The Marvels, Red Sonja, and Superman. This WEEK S TOP STORYNEW DETAILS EMERGE ABOUT WB S NEXT SUPERMAN(Photo by ©Warner Bros. courtesy Everett Collection)Three months ago, we learned that Warner Bros. had hired award-winning novelist and comics writer Ta-Nehisi Coates to start work on what was expected to be a Black Superman movie. This week, new details emerged about the studio s plans, including their goal of hiring a director of color for the job. Warner Bros. is reportedly working from a short list that includes Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II), J.D. Dillard (Sleight), Regina King (One Night in Miami), and Shaka King (Judas and the Black Messiah). Ta-Nehisi Coates isn t expected to finish his Superman screenplay until just before Christmas, but Warner Bros. appears to be motivated to use the rest of 2021 to gear up. That will also likely include casting their new Superman himself, and you can see some of the possible candidates in this piece. As for what Coates Superman screenplay is actually about, no villain has been revealed yet, but Superman is still expected to be Kal-El from the planet Krypton, and it might be a period piece set in the 20th century. This film is also not expected to be part of the DC Extended Universe (which includes The Flash, in which Sasha Calle will play the first Latina Supergirl), but will instead be more of a standalone film similar to Joaquin Phoenix s Joker (Fresh at 68%), or the upcoming The Batman (3/4/2022), starring Robert Pattinson.Other Top Headlines1. MARVEL S PHASE 4 TO INCLUDE THE MARVELS, BLACK PANTHER 2: WAKANDA FOREVER(Photo by Marvel Studios)As accessibility to COVID-19 vaccines promises the return of the moviegoing experience, Marvel Studios released a sizzle reel this week highlighting their upcoming films for 2021, 2022, and 2023, including what appears to be the rest of their Phase 4 roster. The video includes our first look at footage from Eternals (11/5/2021) from recent Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) and a release date for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 (5/5/2023). Two of Marvel s upcoming sequels also received new titles, as the movies formerly called Black Panther 2 and Captain Marvel 2 are now officially titled Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (7/8/2022) and The Marvels (11/11/2022), which will see Brie Larson s Carol Danvers joined by Disney+ stars Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau from WandaVision) and Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan from the upcoming Ms. Marvel). The video ends with a blue 4 surrounded by a circle, which suggests the final film of Phase 4 will be Fantastic Four, although no release date is given, and we don t know any cast yet.2. MARVEL S BLADE REBOOT APPARENTLY DELAYED OUT OF PHASE 4 (Photo by ©New Line Cinema courtesy Everett Collection)At San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, Marvel Studios announced their films for Phase 4, as well as plans for Blade and Fantastic Four, which, at the time, were not expected to be included in Phase  4. This week, however, Fantastic Four seemed to be teased at the end of Marvel s new sizzle reel, while the Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali was missing altogether. As it turned out, an explanation for this was to be found somewhat buried in The Hollywood Reporter s story this week about Warner Bros. hunt for a Superman director. Although they have very little else in common, both Blade and Superman will feature black leads, and both studios are seeking black or African American directors, which means both Marvel and Warner Bros. are working from similar shortlists of possible directors. It s for this reason that Marvel has apparently pushed the production start date of Blade from this September back almost a year to July, 2022 instead. In addition to giving Marvel more time to hire their Blade director, this delay will also allow screenwriter Stacy Osei-Kuffour (HBO s Watchmen) more time to fine-tune  the Blade screenplay.3. JOJO RABBIT STAR TO PORTRAY OLYMPIC GYMNAST KERRI STRUG (Photo by Scott Green/©Bleecker Street Media)Currently 20 years old, New Zealand actress Thomasin McKenzie had a major breakout role in 2018 s Leave No Trace (Certified Fresh at 100%), which was followed one year later by Taika Waititi s Jojo Rabbit (Certified Fresh at 80%), in which she was basically the female lead (Scarlett Johansson played more of a supporting role). McKenzie has stayed pretty busy in the last two years (even with COVID-19), which includes roles in M. Night Shyamalan s Old (7/23/2021), Edgar Wright s Last Night in Soho (10/22/2021), and Jane Campion s The Power of the Dog. Actress-turned-director Olivia Wilde has also been staying busy following her directorial debut with Booksmart (Certified Fresh at 96%), as she recently wrapped Don t Worry Darling (starring Flroence Pugh, Harry Styles, and Chris Pine), and she s also developing a Sony Pictures superhero movie expected to be Spider-Woman (or something similar). Last year, just before the COVID-19 pandemic fully struck, Wilde also signed on to direct a biopic called Perfect, about 1992 and 1996 Olympic gymnast Kerri Strug, and it appears Perfect is getting closer to being Wilde s next as director. Thomasin McKenzie is now signed to star in Perfect as Strug, who is perhaps best known for participating in the vault competition despite an injured knee, which meant that she then had to be carried to the podium by her coach. Filming of Perfect is expected to start in January following the release of Don t Worry, Darling.4. TENET STAR TEAMING UP WITH ROGUE ONE DIERCTOR FOR TRUE LOVE (Photo by Melinda Sue Gordon/©Warner Bros.)As COVID-19 kept many theaters in the USA closed for at least several months, many films were delayed until 2021, and others were picked up by various streaming outlets (and still are doing so). One of the directors who didn t give up on a theatrical release (for better or worse) was Christopher Nolan, whose Tenet (Fresh at 70%) was released in theaters unlike many other Warner Bros. films, which debuted instead on HBO Max. The star of Tenet was John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman, Malcolm Marie), and this week, Washington signed on to star in the next film from another sc-fi/action director, as he will star in a new film called True Love for director Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). The premise of True Love is being kept secret, except that it s a sci-fi story set in the near future, and the title also obviously suggests a romantic element.5. AMY ADAMS TO STAR AS A SCIENTIST WHOSE WORK INSPIRED JAMES CAMERON S AVATAR (Photo by Jef Hernandez/Everett Collection)The world is still waiting for James Cameron s first Avatar sequel, which is currently scheduled for December 16, 2022, eight years after the sequel s first announced release date in 2014. As it might turn out, another movie related to Avatar could feasibly end up being released before Avatar 2. Amy Adams Bond Group Entertainment and Jake Gyllenhaal s Nine Stories production companies are teaming up for an adaptation of the memoir Finding the Mother Tree by scientist Suzanne Simard, with Amy Adams also attached to star in the film as Simard. The memoir is described as a scientific detective story about Simard s studies into the hidden fungus networks underground that trees use to communicate. The connection to Avatar comes in the form of the Tree of Souls featured in that film, which was inspired by Simard s work.6. IT DIRECTOR TEAMING UP WITH THE COUPLE BEHIND THE BIG SICK (Photo by Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)After years of delays (it was once scheduled for release on March 23, 2018), Warner Bros. The Flash has finally started filming under director Andy Muschietti (Mama, IT, IT: Chapter Two), and at the same time, Muschietti has already started developing another future project. Muschietti and his wife Barbara are teaming up with another husband-wife duo, Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, who co-wrote the 2017 indie comedy hit The Big Sick (Certified Fresh at 98%), based on their own experiences together. The project bringing these two couples together is an adaptation  ofthe Edward Gorey illustrated book The Doubtful Guest, which tells the story of a strange penguin-like creature that drops in unexpectedly at a family manor. It s not yet clear if the film will be adapted as live action (perhaps with a tone like The Babadook), a live-action children s movie, or something else.7. KAITLYN DEVER FROM BOOKSMART LANDS ROMEO JULIET SPINOFF (Photo by Francois Duhamel/©Annapurna Pictures)In literature, there is a form of story called parallel fiction, in which characters from popular works are expanded upon in their own stories. Famous examples of this include Wicked (from The Wizard of Oz), The Mists of Avalon (from the Arthurian Legends), Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead (from Hamlet), and Alan Moore s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (from dozens of Victorian Era works). This story involves a supporting character from William Shakespeare s Romeo Juliet getting her own movie, starring Kaitlyn Dever from Booksmart (Certified Fresh at 96%). That character will be Rosaline, who was Juliet s cousin, and at the beginning of Shakespeare s play, Romeo s romantic interest. Rosaline will be a modern, revisionist, rom-com take on the entire story (which suggests something more like 10 Things I Hate About You or Clueless), and it makes its way to production at 20th Century Studios after a long development cycle at MGM.8. OWEN WILSON S SECRET HEADQUARTERS TO BE DISCOVERED (Photo by Dee Cercone/Everett Collection)In the CW superhero series Stargirl, Luke Wilson plays a former superhero sidekick who secretly moves back to his hometown, where he has a secret base in a car garage where he keeps a 15-foot-tall robot. That particular character beat might be a coincidence, but this week, Luke s brother Owen Wilson signed with producer Jerry Bruckheimer to star in a family-friendly superhero action movie called Secret Headquarters. It s not yet known for sure who Wilson will be playing, but the premise of Secret Headquarters is about a kid who discovers the secret headquarters of the world’s most powerful superhero hidden beneath his home and must defend it with his group of friends when villains attack. From that, we can probably guess that Wilson might be the hero in question, one of the supervillains, or the kid s dad. Secret Headquarters will be directed by the team of Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, who also directed the Netflix movie Project Power (Fresh at 61%).9. MARVEL VILLAIN HANNAH JOHN-KAMEN TO DON THE ARMOR OF RED SONJA  (Photo by Ben Rothstein/©Marvel/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Some movies have roads to production that are relatively easy to explain, and then there s Red Sonja. Originally created by Marvel Comics as a supporting character in Conan the Barbarian (not the movie), Red Sonja eventually got her own movie in 1985, starring Brigitte Nielsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger, except that he wasn t playing Conan the Barbarian, which remains a weird thing that happened. Fast forward to the 2000s, when director Robert Rodriguez spent several years trying to remake Red Sonja and got as far as making a poster with Rose McGowan in costume kneeling above a release year of 2009 and then that didn t happen either. Then, it also didn t happen under director Bryan Singer. Long story short, this week, Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost from Ant-Man and the Wasp) is now officially attached to star as Red Sonja for indie director Joey Soloway. We should note that the Red Sonja rights (and the Conan rights, and the Robert E. Howard stories she s loosely based on) have all exchanged hands repeatedly since the 1970s, so this Red Sonja movie is now basically its own thing, and is unlikely to have any connections to Conan (and definitely not Marvel). On an Apple device?
