The in-person event will take place at both Union Station in downtown Los Angeles and the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood – as well as at satellite locations across the planet – and nominees who choose to attend are encouraged to wear not-casual attire.Recommended: Download our printable 2021 Oscars BallotRecommended: The Biggest Snubs, Surprises, and Milestones of the 2021 Oscar NominationsRecommended: Where to Watch the 2021 Oscar NomineesRecommended: The 2021 Best Picture Nominees Ranked by Tomatometer We re aiming for a fusion of Inspirational and Aspirational, which in actual words means formal is totally cool if you want to go there, but casual is really not, the letter said. With a slimmed-down attendee list of only presenters, those nominated, and their guest and the event being treated as an active movie set in terms of COVID protocol, producers must have something truly unusual planned, and we re eager to see how it stands up to past events. While we wait to see what s in store on the 2021 red carpet and during the event spectacle, we ve had a look at the Oscars events of the past decade and ranked them below from best to worst. So does anyone beat Anne Hathaway and James Franco as hosts of the worst Academy Awards ceremony in the past 10 years? Read on to find out.

The iconic Emmy-winning Western series, created by David Milch (NYPD Blue), aired just three seasons from 2004 to 2006. And while that s a short run for a program to be considered iconic, with the character-defining performances of the show s ensemble cast — including Ian McShane as brothel owner/crime boss Al Swearengen and Timothy Olyphant as reluctant lawman with a violent streak Seth Bullock— the premium cable network brought a program to TV unlike anything the small screen had seen up until that point. The original series explored the lives and politics of the rag-tag group of citizens, and outlaws, living in 19th century Deadwood — an illegal 1870s mining camp situated in the Dakota territories. A variety of real-life historical figures (including Bullock, Swearengen, Wild Bill Hickok, and Calamity Jane) and Shakespeare-like dialogue intertwined for a thick, layered story about the uncivilized beginnings of a civilized America. After a long run of rumors surrounding a potential sequel film, Deadwood: The Movie is finally making its way to HBO on May 31. What exactly can we expect from the network s highly anticipated return to the Old West? To further whet your outlaw appetites, here’s a look at the details that have already been revealed, along with a series refresher to shed light on where the movie may go.WHAT WILL THE MOVIE BE ABOUT?(Photo by Warrick Page/HBO)It s now 1889 and the town of Deadwood is finally on the verge of legitimacy as it is set to join the state of South Dakota. It s a pivotal event that brings the town s original inhabitants back to the former outlaw camp to partake in the celebration. As you d expect, time doesn t especially work to heal old wounds, and when old friends and enemies reunite, some unresolved demons come to light.WHERE THE SHOW LEFT OFF(Photo by Warrick Page/HBO)Look, it s been a long time since Deadwood went off the air and viewers may need a refresher on the storylines that were left wide open when season 3 came to a close. That said, consider this a spoiler warning as we re about to dig into the most important plot point the movie is sure to cover. In the program s penultimate episode, titled The Catbird Seat, Trixie (Paula Malcolmson), The Gem Saloon s former star prostitute — and Al Swearengen s continued love interest — attempted to kill mining tycoon George Hearst (Gerald McRaney) for vengeance over the unfortunate murder of prospector Whitney Ellsworth (Jim Beaver). While it was an up-close-and-personal confrontation, Hearst didn t end up getting a good look at Trixie s face since she distracted him with other body parts before shooting him in the chest. He survived, however, and came to Swearengen seeking his own retribution. But since he didn t get a good look at her face, Al decided to murder Jen (Jennifer Lutheran), another of his sex workers, who happened to share some resemblance with his failed assassin and presented her dead body to Hearst as proof of the vigilante justice he requested.McRaney is returning to reprise his villainous role in the film, leaving this unresolved conflict ripe for new exploration. Not only would this story device stir things up in town, it would allow Trixie — who found romance with Sheriff Bullock s business partner Sol Star (John Hawkes) — to gain closure over the wrongful murders of Ellsworth and Jen. And if you recall, the one thing that put Seth Bullock and Al Swearengen on the same side was the unwelcome arrival and insidious business dealings of the infamous George Hearst. One other piece of drama that will get a fresh set of eyes is the budding relationship between brothel madame Joanie Stubbs (Kim Dickens) and Wild Bill Hickok s (Keith Carradine) close friend, Calamity Jane Canary (Robin Weigert). Audiences didn t get a lot from their romance as it was just beginning when the series came to a close, but given their connection to the town, to each other, and to their participation in Alma s mission to create a separate schoolhouse for the children of the town — moving the kids from a brothel setting to a more suitable learning environment — it’s positioned as the perfect B-story for the movie to peruse.WHICH CHARACTERS WILL APPEAR?(Photo by Warrick Page/HBO)It wouldn t be a Deadwood movie without the return of McShane and Olyphant and, thankfully, they are back to reprise their respective roles here while also taking on executive producer credits. Joining them are most of the show s ensemble cast, including Molly Parker (Lost in Space) as Alma Ellsworth, Malcomson (Ray Donovan) as Trixie, Hawkes (Eastbound and Down) as Sol Star, Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad) as Sheriff Bullock s wife, Martha Bullock, Dayton Callie (Sons of Anarchy) as Charlie Utter, Brad Dourif (Cult of Chucky) as Doc Cochran, Weigert (Big Little Lies) as Calamity Jane Canary, William Sanderson (True Blood) as E.B. Farnum, Dickens (Fear the Walking Dead) as brothel madame Joanie Stubbs — who, if you ll recall, ended up opening her own establishment after Cy Tolliver granted her permission to leave the Bella Union Saloon, where she was the establishment s madame — W. Earl Brown (Preacher) as Swearengen s right-hand-man Dan Dority, and, of course, McRaney (This is Us) as George Hearst.WHO S RUNNING THINGS?(Photo by Warrick Page/HBO)Back when the original series hit the screen, the person pulling all the strings was the show’s creator and writer David Milch. Stories from the series’ set revealed that he was a micromanager of the highest regard, known to scrap scenes as the actors were set to roll. He’d write brand new pages, handing them off to the talent still hot from the printer, creating a chaotic environment where the performers never really knew what to expect. His brilliant vision, both on the page and behind the camera, is what made Deadwood, and NYPD Blue before it, unlike anything else on television. That said, due to his current struggle with Alzheimer s disease, Milch ended up taking a backseat during the production process for Deadwood: The Movie. Instead, Vulture reports that he relied heavily on director Daniel Minahan (Game of Thrones) and co-executive producer Regina Corrado, who began her working relationship with Milch as a writer on the original series back in 2005.SHOULD YOU REWATCH THE SERIES BEFORE THE MOVIE PREMIERES?(Photo by Warrick Page/HBO)The original three-season run of Deadwood consisted of 36 episodes. The series premiered right when HBO was making a name for itself with cutting-edge original programming like The Sopranos and Oz. And while we d highly recommend watching the series to anyone, re-watching the series before the movie hits the network isn t exactly a prerequisite.Milch and company know that 13 years is a long time, and they took that fact into account in how the movie s story plays out. While a whole bunch of familiar faces appear, the film s most important plot points are accompanied by quick series flashbacks to add just enough context to the current story being told. All that said, if you find have some extra time on your hands, it may behoove you to revisit Deadwood. Not only has there yet to be anything like it on TV since the series went off the air, but the strength of the performances and Milch s signature dialog are also, without a doubt, a magnificent sight to behold.WHEN WILL IT AIR?(Photo by Warrick Page/HBO)The wait is nearly over. Deadwood: The Movie will premiere Friday, May 31 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.Like this? Subscribe to our newsletter and get more features, news, and guides in your inbox every week.

A million things can – and often do – go wrong, myriad questions and unforeseen problems pop up, and all the while issues like budgeting and scheduling consistently hover around, like annoying flies you just can’t swat away. But making a movie during lockdown? “It was intimidating and surreal, to be honest,” Adam Mason says of the prospect (at the time uncharted territory) of doing just that.Back in early July, the co-writer-director’s romance-thriller, Songbird (out December 11 on demand), became the first studio feature film to shoot in Los Angeles since the industry was put on ice for the foreseeable future in March. “The entire city shut down in one day, and nobody was working,” Mason recalls, “and it was like, How can we get back to work? More than anything to do with the story, that was a huge priority.”When the lockdown went into effect, Mason had to essentially shelve his indie passion project, which was in pre-production, leaving him “very despondent,” as he puts it. The next morning, his writing partner Simon Boyes rang him, and the duo cooked up a found-footage, lockdown-set “monster movie akin to something like Cloverfield.” That idea was greenlit by producer Adam Goodman, and eventually Michael Bay signed on, and Songbird ballooned from an iPhone-shot indie to a slick, big-budget Hollywood production about lovers (KJ Apa and Sofia Carson) trapped in a near-future COVID-plagued L.A., with a cast that boasts Bradley Whitford, Demi Moore, Peter Stormare, and Craig Robinson. “It became something a lot bigger than I anticipated,” Mason concedes. Zone Systems, PPE, And Just 19 Days For a Michael Bay Blockbuster (Photo by © STX Films)That bigness presented a big problem. “It’s the only project I’ve ever been involved in where I was thinking about something other than the narrative,” says Mason. “I was thinking about safety and how we could pull off this kind of monumental task.” To do that, the production, in conjunction with unions, laid down a set of guidelines: There would be constant testing. “I was tested three times a week,” says Mason, “and if anyone came into my bubble – the amount of people I’d see day to day was tiny – I would know that that person had been tested negative that morning.”There would be a “zone system,” in which anyone on set was designated to a particular area, to limit interactions with non-masked actors when cameras rolled. The crew would be capped at 40 people. And personal protective equipment (PPE) and quarantining measures would be in place. “We had a rule very early on that we wouldn’t hire an actor that was out of town,” says Mason. “And then everyone quarantined whenever they left set, so I would know that everyone I was working with hadn’t mingled with anyone outside of their families.” (As Deadline reported in July, the SAG-AFTRA union hit Songbird with a Do Not Work order, only to rescind it the following day once an agreement was made.)It helped that Songbird was a film about lockdown conceived during lockdown, written with a lot of those logistical hula hoops in mind – namely, not being able to have blocking (“It wasn’t like actors had to hit marks because we didn’t have the full crew to warrant that kind of traditional filmmaking,” Mason says) or “massive movie lights” or makeup retouches or time (it wrapped in 19 days) or anything else that would require inessential on-set interaction. And if there was a moment that called for a lot of actors, there was a workaround: “Because Songbird is set four years in the future during the pandemic,” Mason says of the more extra-heavy scenes, “all of the military were wearing hazmat suits and gas masks and things that actually were extremely safe in terms of being PPE.”Certified Fresh Horror Via iPhones and Direct Messages(Photo by © Shudder)That same ethos – doing what you can with the limited lockdown means you have – has propelled indie films shot during the pandemic as well. Host, a grippingly fun horror film Certified Fresh at 100% (and currently streaming on Shudder) started as a lark. “[Host director] Rob Savage played a prank on us,” explains the film’s star, Haley Bishop. “He told us that there was this noise in his attic when we were all on Zoom, and then he somehow seamlessly made it seem like he had gone up into his attic and then cut to the zombie shot from the horror film [•REC]. He put the video up of us screaming online, and it got millions of views within a couple of days.”Viral exposure led to a deal with Shudder, and Host, about a séance over Zoom gone wrong, began shooting a mere two weeks later, in April. “When we started, the U.K. was in full lockdown,” Bishop says. “Rob never set foot in any of our apartments.” Host had a scriptment – “the little points we had to hit” – but the dialogue was completely improvised, so Savage and producer Douglas Cox, on blacked-out screens over Zoom, would instant-message actors notes in real time.“Rob would write, ‘Okay, call Jemma [Moore] a bitch’ or ‘Keep poking at her until she cracks,’ and he’d be sending other private messages to her,” Bishop says, noting that all footage from the film was shot from iPhones attached to the actors’ laptops. “That was the beauty of it: We didn’t have to reset lights or wait for any departments to fix anything. We could just start again immediately. The most challenging aspect, though, was because we had to do so much intense crying and screaming and because we weren’t being ushered back to a trailer between takes, I was like, I can’t cry anymore. I’m so dehydrated. ”When COVID restrictions in London loosened, a small stunt team donning PPE visited the necessary actors’ homes – with medics on standby outside – to rig them with the pulleys and ropes and crash mats and whatnot needed to achieve Host’s scares. “Luckily, my partner was physically strong enough to drag me down a hallway, so he was very involved with helping,” Bishop says of one particularly jump-worthy moment.A Playwright Pivots, Turning to Zoom to Bring Nora Highland to the Screen(Photo by Ryan Spahn )Even fewer frills – no chilling VFX or stunts or medics – are present in Nora Highland, writer-director Ryan Spahn’s comedic, Zoom-shot drama that screened in October (virtually, of course) as part of this year’s NewFest, an LGBTQIA+ focused film festival in New York. Spahn originally wrote Nora Highland as a play, but after hosting a reading of it for an online benefit in the early days of the pandemic – the reading featured Tessa Thompson in the role Marin Ireland plays in the film – he decided to adapt it into a shutdown-set feature. “I realized, Oh this really works on this platform, ” he says. “So then I adjusted it to the format of it being a found-footage or video conferencing film, like Searching or Unfriended.”The centerpiece of Nora Highland is a lengthy Zoom chat, in which a theater director (Ireland) and actor (Michael Hsu Rosen) spat over the casting of gay characters – the thorny ethical issue of casting straight actors in the roles – while discussing an upcoming Broadway revival. “They’re big New York stage actors, so we rehearsed it for two weeks and then they got off book, as if we were doing a play,” Spahn says of the process. “One was in Upstate, and the other was in Chelsea. But because it was designed for [Zoom], the way you’d rehearse it is exactly the way it was filmed. So we did it in one take, and I hoped there wasn’t an internet or cell-phone problem.”Despite some initial editing quibbles – “we couldn’t sit next to each other, so the editor had to screen-share his desktop, and there were weird delays and volume issues,” he explains – Spahn found filmmaking during the pandemic “very freeing.”Although Songbird has polar-opposite stakes and circumstances, Mason shares that sentiment: “Because there weren’t loads of people around, weighing in with opinions and thoughts and so on, there was this incredible sense of freedom that I haven’t felt for years. I think it kind of stripped away all of the bulls t of filmmaking.”Songbird is available on video on demand from December 11. Host is available now on Shudder. Nora Highland is currently screening at online festivals. On an Apple device?

Finality would seemingly be the major topic of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Since Disney released the first trailer for the film at Star Wars Celebration last April, the message has been loud and clear: The 42-year saga of the Skywalker family is ending. Star Wars itself may be a brand that will never die, but this version of it is on its final chapter.Fittingly enough, the final trailer for The Rise of Skywalker continues this idea not only with its onscreen text, but a return to some ideas not yet used in the sequel trilogy. Let’s take a look at what this trailer offers us about the film and how it circles back to the first time audiences thought Star Wars was ending. The Rebellion RebornJoel MearesThe final moments of Star Wars: The Last Jedi were hopeful despite the crushing odds. General Leia Organa’s (Carrie Fisher) Resistance against the First Order numbered so few people, they could all be evacuated from Crait aboard the Millennium Falcon. But as this trailer makes clear – thanks to Poe Dameron’s (Oscar Isaac) line about good people needing leadership – the Resistance will be reinforced.A year has transpired since the events of both The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, so we certainly hope Leia, Poe, Finn (John Boyega), Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) and the other survivors of Crait were able to drum up support. But the new trailer makes it clear that the level of reinforcement will be staggering. A shot later in the trailer indicates an armada will form for one final battle against the First Order that may rival the Rebel fleet in Return of the Jedi.At the one-minute mark, we see this fleet of Resistance ships. It includes the Falcon, a number of Mon Cala frigates, and ships that fans are already speculating are the Ghost from Star Wars Rebels and The Mandalorian’s Razor Crest. But considering the echo of Return of the Jedi’s Rebel armada, we imagine these ships will still be outnumbered thanks to all those Imperial Star Destroyers glimpsed throughout the trailer. The Thrones of Sheev Palpatine and the Emperor s Return(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, © Lucasfilm)The trailer is surprisingly heavy on thrones. The seat of Imperial power always followed Sheev Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) wherever he went, but early drafts of Return of the Jedi featured a throne room hiding deep in the core of the Imperial capital planet, a world creator George Lucas planned to name Had Abbadon, but later changed to Coruscant to align with the Expanded Universe. At 54 seconds into the trailer, we see a version of that Had Abbadon throne bathed in a misty light. Combined with the voice of Palpatine saying “long have I waited,” we can conclude this is a throne he fashioned during his years in hiding. Although, a subsequent shot at 1:59 of Rey seemingly confronting Palpatine sat upon that throne may indicate this is all another Force dream. But one throne is definitely not a dream: the seat the Emperor used in Return of the Jedi, which is clearly visible at 1:48 as Rey and Kylo prepare for a fight among the ruins of the throne room from the second Death Star. We have to admit this is a bold reuse of an Original Trilogy location as director J.J Abrams came under criticism for essentially remaking the original Star Wars with The Force Awakens. Placing the Sequel Trilogy’s primary protagonist and antagonist in that setting means Abrams intends to fully embrace aspects of Return of the Jedi to underscore that promised finality. Also, it just looks cool.At the same time, you may be wondering if Palpatine will actually appear in the film. The appearance of an Imperial Star Destroyer emerging from ice suggests to us the Emperor and his Empire will make a startling return.Threepio’s Sacrifice(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, © Lucasfilm)And then, the John Williams score stops for a moment in which new character Babu Frick works on protocol droid C-3PO (Anthony Daniels). The droid scans the people assembled (which includes Kerri Russell s Zorri Bliss) and Poe asks, What are you doing? The droid’s response: “Taking one last look, sir, at my friends.” It certainly suggests the character will make a noble sacrifice in The Rise of Skywalker. If we allow George Lucas and the filmmakers who followed him the notion that events in Star Wars rhyme like poetry, then there’s something genuinely poetic about Threepio sacrificing himself for the greater good. He is one of two characters to appear in all of the Skywalker films and he is one of Anakin Skywalker’s abiding legacies; his end would be fitting in this film. That is, of course, assuming whatever mission Threepio’s getting fitted for will end in his destruction. The scene appears to sync up with the shot from the D23 footage revealing Threepio with red eyes. We can probably assume he is being sent to a First Order base or Star Destroyer to obtain information. It could all be moments from his last hours or his line in this trailer could be played for laughs in the finished film as another example of his theatrical disposition.Or, to put it another way, this is an echo of his “I’m done for” moment in the Jundland Wastes back in the original Star Wars. But we hope Threepio (and R2-D2 for that matter) get a proper send-off. Whether that means they are destroyed or retired with Leia all depends on how the story plays out.A Green World And The Death Star RemainsJoel MearesThe bones of the second Death Star scattered throughout the trailer suggest a return to the forest moon of Endor. And, as it happens, we definitely see a lot of greenery in other parts of the trailer. But all of this could be another dodge, just as Jakku looked a lot like Tatooine. Abrams may want the scenery without the history, as landscapes pockmarked with the literal debris of previous Star Wars films continue to be highly effective images. If it is Endor, the message is clear: This story was meant to end there which is true (from a certain point of view). Going back to Lucas’s original drafts for Star Wars, the Empire (or the First Galactic Kingdom) was always meant to be defeated by forest-dwelling creatures. At the time, they were Wookies from the planet Yavin. But as things developed, Star Wars featured one Wookie and a rebel base situation on a jungle world. By the time of Return of the Jedi, Lucas reasoned people were too familiar with Wookies to find their homegrown rebellion against the Empire interesting, so he cut them in half and called the new creatures Ewoks – granted, the astronomical toy sales as the key motivation for the existence of Ewoks sounds as equally plausible. But Lucas never moved away from this forest planet conclusion and it appears Abrams will honor that idea in The Rise of Skywalker. At the same time, all those shots of the Death Star ruins caught up in the sea suggests this green world may be more diverse than the forest moon of Endor as Star Wars planets tend to feature a single biome. Explosions in the Star Wars galaxy do not obey normal physics, so it is possible parts of the second Death Star were flung clear across the quadrant to a world with forests, plains (as glimpsed in the first trailer), and vast seas. But if Abrams wants to evoke Endor, he might as well use Endor and give it these other geographic and biological features. We signed up for recurring scenery when Return of the Jedi featured a second Death Star.“Now Your Coming Together … Is Your Undoing”(Photo by © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, © Lucasfilm)But for all the provocative glimpses of an iceberg in space, Dominic Monahan’s character, space battles, and the Resistance riding horse-like creatures alongside Jannah (Naomi Ackie), one key line of dialogue stuck out to us: Palpatine’s declaration that “your coming together” will be someone’s undoing. The line is interesting as it echoes his Return of the Jedi proclamation that Luke s (Mark Hamill) faith in his friends is his greatest weakness. The conflict between the community Luke supports and isolationist Sith thinking is one of the great ongoing elements of Star Wars. Fans of the Knights of the Old Republic video games are given the choice to create strong bonds among the characters they meet or reject it all for the promise of Dark Side power. Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords complicates this even further as most of the characters who tag along on your adventure are Force-sensitive and have the potential to become Jedi or Sith. And in the Prequel Era, the isolation of the Jedi allows Palpatine to enact his plans without any sort of suspicion until it is far too late.It should also be mentioned that Luke calls out overconfidence as Palpatine s weakness. If the Emperor had made his return in The Last Jedi, we’d be inclined to believe the “coming together” he refers to in the trailer is the Resistance, but we’re going to take a leap of faith and suggest he is addressing Rey and Kylo here. Does that mean the characters will ultimately undermine each other and switch sides? That’s unlikely as the film represents the last hours of nine-film epic, but it may tie up the still dangling notion of the Force needing to be in balance. Are Kylo and Rey the real chosen ones from the prophecy introduced in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace? There is time enough to just about make that work. Also, to come back to Palpatine s weaknesses, his perception of future events also undermines him, and one imagines whatever he foresees for Rey and Kylo will also backfire on him.Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is in theaters December 20. Like this? But whatever you call him, he s known far and wide as a comic book hero who s managed to keep relevant in entertainment for decades, re-invented time and time again to answer a nation s distress Bat-signal all. It was camp colors and biff bang pow for the 1960s (the Batman TV show). The 80s found a taste for blockbuster art deco madness (Tim Burton s Batman). The 90s got the best of it (Mask of the Phantasm) and the worst (Batman Robin). The world of the 2000s demanded realism and it got Christopher Nolan s The Dark Knight trilogy.
