Joaquin Phoenix is making all the headlines with his magnetic performance in Todd Phillips  Joker, but before he came along to give us all the creeps, who played the character best? We decided to look back at the history of the singularly iconic villain as portrayed on screen and take on the impossible task of figuring out the answer to that question. So how did we do it? Watch as Mark Ellis takes every big-screen version of the Joker and pits them against each other in four categories: Box Office/Tomatometer, Most Memorable, Most Dastardly Plan, and, of course, the Wild Card round. The fifth season of Power ended on quite a cliffhanger to roll into the final season of the show. We won’t spoil how it resolves in the season premiere, but fans are going to find out whether a certain character pulled through or not. Whatever happens to her will drive Ghost (Omari Hardwick) through the final season of the Starz drama. It’s been a five-year journey for Hardwick as Ghost, a New Yorker running a nightclub above board, but making his real money selling drugs. While the final chapter of Ghost s saga will air in two parts — part one premieres Sunday, Aug. 25, and part two will debut in January 2020 — Hardwick s future is already looking bright. He spent his summer filming Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead with Dave Bautista, and will have no trouble staying busy if his movie output between seasons of Power is any indication.Hardwick spoke with Rotten Tomatoes about the final season of Power and also shared what he likes to watch when he can steal an hour after his kids go to sleep.WHAT IS APPOINTMENT TV FOR YOU?(Photo by Cinemax)Outside of the latest and greatest cartoons, because I’m the pop of a 6- and a 4-year-old — if I’m not watching stuff with them, the first two seasons of Power I watched The Knick. It was appointment TV for me. I haven’t had appointment TV since then because I’ve been playing Ghost. Not only time-wise — it’s tricky. Then I started doing music, so my time was all about just being with the kids. The first two seasons I was watching Soderbergh’s The Knick. My friend Andre Holland [was] on it, obviously and Clive Owen. That was the last time. I like The Voice. That was appointment TV for me. I like Chip and Jojo, HGTV s Fixer Upper was really big for me. I find myself watching a lot of that kind of stuff.WHAT’S ON YOUR DVR?(Photo by Warrick Page/HBO)What I haven’t been able to see yet that is set on the DVR in terms of the pre-order, because I didn’t make it into the theater to watch it, is Avengers: Endgame. I never got a chance to see that yet. I’m working with Dave Bautista now and I told him, “I haven’t seen that yet.” He’s like, “It’s there. It ain’t gonna go nowhere.” [The kids and I] watched Jumanji yesterday, which is different than the one you and I grew up with.I did like True Detective. I thought Mahershala was really solid on that and we actually share an agent. I loved his work on that.WHAT’S IN YOUR STREAMING QUEUE?(Photo by Sony Pictures)I watched Into the Spider-Verse, the animated Spider-Man, which was phenomenal. I’ve had to watch that several times. I’m in a movie right now in New Mexico called Army of the Dead which is Netflix, so I snuck back [home]. My son was under the weather yesterday and I just wanted to hug him. It’s an hour flight. I live in Denver, so I went from New Mexico to Denver, snuck back, and in that little four hours of being home, that’s what I was watching. Oh, you know what I watched? Stranger Things. Really good. I have seen that. It’s really, really different. I liked Stranger Things a lot.WHAT’S COMING SOON THAT YOU CAN’T WAIT FOR?(Photo by HBO)You can tell me whether it’s coming back out. The Night Of, my friend Michael K. Williams was in it. That joint was incredible. I love that. Between The Knick and season 1 and 2 of Power and being able to fit that in, wifey was pregnant with our second kid. After that baby came out, I really got into that. That was dope. I love following the story of it, especially with Ghost being this character that’s such a thinker, and me being a thinker, that was very good. You can tell me — are they doing a second installment? [Editor s note: Sadly, not right now, although HBO has expressed interest should the creative team want to make more.](Photo by Starz)Fred Topel for Rotten Tomatoes: Last season ended on such a cliffhanger. We’re not going to give away what happens in the season premiere, but did you have any input with creator Courtney A. Kemp in how that storyline in particular would resolve?Absolutely. It’s cool that I haven’t necessarily had to want for it. There’s never been a summer that she and I aren’t on the phone about what comes. Playing the lead character, there’s always had to be major, major communication between the two of us as to what’s going on between each episode, let alone coming from the finale of one season to the beginning of the next. We’ve always conversed about it and she’s asked me my opinion. I fly out to L.A. Typically we sit in the writers room. We break down where the next season’s going to go. They ask you your opinions. She’s offered that from the gate so I’ve always had a say in that way.RT: You must have thought a lot about where Ghost is going to end up. Is it quite a different thing to finally be there?I remember running in Boston. Just took the family, drove them up four or five hours to Boston from New York. I remember jogging and listening to a song and the song inspired what I thought would be a great idea for the end of this if we ever got to that point and if we became as successful as we did. At that point, we’re season 2 but if we became as successful as we did, which we now humbly find ourselves, I had written an ending that is not what you guys will see. Getting to the place where whatever the conclusion of my storyline is on the show, if it’s not exactly what I conjured up in my spirit when I was listening to a song running in Boston, then that’s a different experience.RT: What was the song?“Wanted Man. In the song, the guy’s on the run and it’s super dope.(Photo by Starz)RT: Can Ghost save his family, or is it already too late for that?If he could all of a sudden have the family at the same place [it would be unrealistic] because when he rose to the top, he was doing it illegally. At some point as we see Tariq now proving to be that point. Tariq is saying, “But how’d you get there? Mom, don’t speak yet. Pop, how’d you get there? Okay, Mom, you talk. Oh, you’re lying too?” There was so much inequity in the dissemination of information, whether it be false or right, and you’re a parent. You can’t lie to your kids at the levels he did and then have a mistress on the side so that in your fall, you’re able to still salvage everything. My point is, I guess, is when he rose, he was building it on shaky ground. He was going to have a foundation of lies, so I don’t necessarily think we could have it where he salvages them that way. But if he can keep them alive, I think at this point that’s all Ghost is [trying to do].RT: Do you have a badass role in Army of the Dead?My grandma passed in the midst of that, which was tough. Dad’s ma. So it was really, really tough but she did really well —especially having my grandfather pass in November, having a husband that died in November — she lasted nine months after that. So I was wardrobing when she passed and then came home, back to New York. Then I went to the Essence Festival to promote Power. So after we laid her to rest, I might have had two days at the Denver house before Army of the Dead called me right back. The role is a super badass role. Not just a badass, but Dave Bautista and I play the guys that fought with each other at one point and now are being asked to fight with each other again to figure these zombies out. Zack Snyder’s been just a pleasure to work with and his whole camp has been awesome.Power returns for the first half of its final season Sunday, Aug. 25 at 8 p.m. on Starz.英皇体育App官方版下载Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, released on May 19, 1999, is now 20 years old. And once older Star Wars fans get over that shock, the old arguments about the movie begin anew. After two decades, it is still a divisive film among Star Wars fans – but then, what topic isn’t a point of debate among the fanbase? Things have subtly shifted as a generation of kids who never knew a Star Wars galaxy without Episode I grew up to champion some of its merits. It also has writer/director George Lucas singing its praises 20 years after its release, as recently as last month s Star Wars Celebration Chicago. In a video message to fans, he praised the movie s groundbreaking visual effects and referred to is as “one of my favorite movies.”Now, to an older Star Wars fan, that statement might sound absurd. The Phantom Menace is a bad movie in its own right. Currently, it s a rotten 55% on the Tomatometer thanks to a bunch of new reviews that came in following a 2012 conversion to 3D, but even before that, it was squeaking by in the low 60s. Despite its technical achievements, it told an obscure story with thinly drawn characters. And so many political discussions. But we’re not here to re-litigate the quality of the film. Instead, we want to examine Lucas’s fondness for it. While there’s certainly a paternal love he must have for all the films he personally directed – even Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones – the film must have an extra-special place in heart for one key reason: The Phantom Menace is the purest Star Wars film ever made. That may also sound absurd, but join us on a trip back to the mid-1970s to learn how it most closely resembles Lucas s original idea for a film he first called The Star Wars. It Began With The Star Wars In the beginning, Lucas was a frustrated experimental filmmaker. More aligned with the avant-garde cinema emerging from France and the envelope-pushing films of contemporaries like Francis Ford Coppola and John Milius, the last thing Lucas wanted to do was make crowd-pleasers. According to Peter Biskind’s Easy Riders, Raging Bulls: How the Sex-Drugs-and-Rock N Roll Generation Saved Hollywood, Lucas thought it would be too easy. He proved himself right by making the extremely crowd-pleasing American Graffiti for Universal. In the wake of that success, he decided to roll the dice on making a science-fiction film like the Flash Gordon serials he enjoyed as a child. But when the rights to Flash Gordon proved to be unavailable, he simply fashioned his own space opera in a script called “The Star Wars.”(Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)The plot of what is now known as the rough draft of The Star Wars told the tale of Annikin Starkiller, the son of an exiled Jedi Bendu warrior. After his family is discovered hiding on the fourth moon of Utapau and his brother is killed by the villainous Knights of the Sith, Annikin and his father Kane return to their home world of Aquilae. There, they aid Princess Leia in evading capture by forces from the New Empire, which wants to control the planet s unique cloning technology. At the same time, Annikin becomes the Padawaan apprentice of the great Jedi Bendu warrior Luke Skywalker when Kane reveals he is mostly made of machine parts and cannot train his son properly. Soon, Annikin, Leia, and Luke – along with two droids – set off on a mission to find aid in the friendly Ophuchi system.Their path takes them from the Aquilae royal seat to a seedy spaceport (with a very familiar cantina) to a perilous meteor belt to the planet Yavin, where Skywalker teaches hairy giants called Wookees to fly disused snub fighters. In Skywalker’s mind, the gambit is the only way to defeat the Empire’s new space fortress in orbit above Aquilae, where Leia ends up as a prisoner. Annikin mounts his own rescue mission and finally comes face-to-face with a deadly Knight of the Sith named Valorum. The Sith Knight is swayed by Annikin and the pair save Leia from the quickly crumbling space station. With the crisis averted, Leia becomes Queen of Aquilae and appoints Annikin as Lord Protector of the planet.(Photo by © 20th Century Fox Film Corp. All rights reserved./courtesy Everett Collection)The ideas all sound familiar – particularly the ones lifted from Hidden Fortress. The names are certainly recognizable from the six Star Wars films Lucas developed. And in subsequent interviews – including one conducted by Leonard Maltin for the final VHS release of Star Wars in its original form – Lucas would say he took a look at the script and saw it was just too big for what he could realize on a 1970s budget. His solution was to cut the script into thirds and redevelop the first act into something more practical. Although, even a cursory glance at “The Star Wars” plot reveals he imported the destruction of the space station to his first film. It was the right impulse, as it is a crowd-pleasing ending. But even as Star Wars developed into the phenomenon it became, Lucas never really let “The Star Wars” go.To Naboo And Back AgainLike “The Star Wars,” The Phantom Menace cuts a strange circuitous route around the galaxy. It begins with two Jedi Knights, roughly analogous to Luke Skywalker and Annikin Starkiller, on a mission to prevent war between the peace-loving planet of Naboo and the Trade Federation. When their peace talks fail, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) decides to bring the Queen of Naboo (Natalie Portman) to the galactic capital in an attempt to get the central government to intervene. When that fails, she decides to return to Naboo and mount a defense of her planet. An orbiting control ship with a resemblance to the space station described in The Star Wars is destroyed by an unlikely starfighter pilot.(Photo by © 20th Century Fox Film Corp. All rights reserved./courtesy Everett Collection)While all Star Wars films feature a certain amount of planet-hopping, the loop back to Naboo to resolve the plot is unique to The Phantom Menace, even as it echoes the structure of The Star Wars. And while we re noting similarities in plot and structure, both that script and The Phantom Menace also feature a Jedi and the representative of a benevolent monarchy crossing the stars and failing to find aid in a supposedly sympathetic star system. The revival of these ideas cannot be an accident. The script and the film also share a scope not seen in the Original Trilogy. Those films featured two key locales with an occasional third sketched out. “The Star Wars” and The Phantom Menace feature multiple worlds rendered with astonishing specificity. As we know from DVD special features, realizing these worlds on the scale Lucas always envisioned for The Star Wars was a key ambition in developing The Phantom Menace. And when you compare the startling grandeur of Coruscant and Naboo to the scrappier vision of Mos Eisley spaceport, the Moon of Yavin IV – and even the Death Star in Star Wars – it is easy to see why he was always a little disappointed in that film even as it changed the world. The Phantom Menace represents the galaxy as he saw it while writing alone at his typewriter all those years ago.The Flash Gordon InfluenceUnlike the final forms of the Star Wars Original Trilogy, “The Star Wars” and The Phantom Menace share an obvious love of the Flash Gordon film serials. Both envision worlds of people wearing capes and fine robes. But since the Flash Gordon films were made on the cheap, those serials only suggested a world of lavish production design to future filmmakers like Lucas. Also, the wooden acting, hard-to-parse names, and political maneuverings among all the action scenes are elements The Star Wars and The Phantom Menace share with Flash Gordon.(Photo by Courtesy the Everett Collection)While Hidden Fortress gave him a plot to emulate, Flash Gordon served as the visual starting place for Lucas while writing “The Star Wars. The sparser landscape of Utapau recalls the California deserts used in those serials, while Aquilae (and later Naboo) could easily be seen as another vision of Ming the Merciless s opulent throneworld. As “The Star Wars” became Star Wars, Lucas s universe became more rundown and utilitarian. It was an aesthetic he ultimately came to admire and promote, but his wish to realize the worlds his child-mind envisioned while watching Flash Gordon never waned. When it finally became feasible to do so, he employed an army of artists to make those places as awe-inspiring as his imagination viewed the Kingdoms of Mongo. This is also why there is a certain artificiality to them. While the worlds of Star Wars are credible and relatable, Naboo and the descriptions of Aquilae ultimately lack a certain reality. It s an unfortunate inheritance from the plywood sets and backdrop paintings of Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe. But when one can accept that aspect of the aesthetic, there is beauty to appreciate.Han Solo: The Original Jar-Jar BinksThe realization of fantastic environments was not the only technical limitation hobbling Lucas’s plans for “The Star Wars.” Roughly 30 pages into the script, Skywalker goes to a cantina at the Gordon space port where he meets up with one an old friends: Han Solo. But the character is nothing like the charismatic rogue we know today. In the script, he is described as a reptile-like Ureallian with green skin, no nose, gills, and large eyes. The creature clearly has more in common with the reviled Gungan Jar-Jar Binks than the Corellian ace who flew the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs.(Photo by Ralph Nelson, Jr./TM and Copyright © 20th Century Fox Film Corp. All rights reserved./courtesy Everett Collection)Because of his interest in pushing cinema forward, an interest that went back to the first time he picked up a camera, Lucas couldn’t help but set up incredible challenges for himself in writing “The Star Wars.” Han was meant to be a featured character, but the creature as described in the script would require another 20 years worth of special effects advancements to be even remotely feasible. In subsequent drafts, Han would split into two characters and change considerably. The Solo character became human and inherited some traits from Annikin – who was himself on a journey to becoming the Luke Skywalker we know today – while Lucas’s desire to feature an alien as part of ensemble would see the Wookee Chewbacca promoted from a relative guest-starring spot late in The Star Wars to Han s co-pilot.Nonetheless, he never stopped trying to make his original vision for Han Solo a reality. While filming Star Wars, he shot a now-infamous scene featuring gangster Jabba the Hutt. Though performed by actor Declan Mulholland on set, his intention was always to paint over the performance with a stop-motion creature. This proved unfeasible and the scene was scrapped until the 1997 Special Edition of the film. On The Empire Strikes Back, he took a different direction in creating a key alien character by hiring Muppet stalwart Frank Oz to help devise and perform Jedi Master Yoda. In Return of the Jedi, Lucas re-imagined Jabba as a large-scale Muppet. But even beyond these featured characters, every alien in the Mos Eisley Cantina, the Ugnaughts of Cloud City, and even Jedi s Ewoks represented attempts to create realistic yet alien characters he could seamlessly integrate into his cast.(Photo by © 20th Century Fox Film Corp. All rights reserved./courtesy Everett Collection) It could be argued the only reason The Phantom Menace exists is because computer technology advanced enough for Lucas to finally realize the scaly alien he wrote about in “The Star Wars” 20 years previous. To be sure, the Han of “The Star Wars” and Jar-Jar are also galaxies apart. The former was a gruff pilot more like Zeb from Star Wars Rebels – in fact, Zeb s design was inspired by early concepts for the alien Han – than the awkward comic relief of The Phantom Menace. Nonetheless, they both derive from the same place. And 20 years after he debuted to the derision of the fans, Lucas still notes Jar-Jar as one of the film’s hallmark achievements. For him, it was an early Star Wars wish fulfilled. The Master And The Apprentice“The Star Wars” never gets too in-depth about the Jedi Bendu – they resemble the wandering samurai of the Akira Kurosawa pictures Lucas came to love in film school. Instead of an all-binding Force, the script s vague religion refers to a more ambiguous “Force of Others” with both the Jedi and the Sith described as accomplished fighters lacking entirely for special abilities. Nonetheless, the relationship between Skywalker and Annikin more closely resembles the Master and Apprentice roles of Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) in The Phantom Menace than the ultimate relationship between Obi-Wan (Alec Guinness) and Luke (Mark Hamill) in Star Wars. That is to say a direct mentoring relationship.(Photo by © 20th Century Fox Film Corp. All rights reserved./courtesy Everett Collection)Clearly, this notion remained in Lucas’s mind through the invention of both the prequel-era Jedi Order and the Sith in the mid-1990s. In both disciplines, the bond between teacher and student was key. While it is unclear if the Lucas who wrote “The Star Wars” was thinking of a continuing story, the Lucas preparing Star Wars in 1976 planned for Obi-Wan to continue mentoring Luke in a subsequent film. But just before Guinness accepted the role, Lucas wrote a new scene in which Obi-Wan died, recalling Kane Starkiller s sacrifice in “The Star Wars.” Going into production, Lucas remained uncertain about the character s fate – it would become a point of contention between the actor and the director throughout filming. But in ultimately altering his plans for Obi-Wan, the intended teacher/student relationship from “The Star Wars” would not be seen until Qui-Gon warned a much younger Obi-Wan to be mindful of the living Force in one of their earliest moments together in The Phantom Menace. With its arrival, the strong bond between a Jedi Master and their Padawan became a key element in Star Wars storytelling. Lucas and Star Wars: The Clone Wars executive producer Dave Filoni would go one step further with this idea by introducing Anakin Skywalker’s Padawan, Ahsoka Tano, and making their relationship a major focus of the show.(Photo by © 20th Century Fox Film Corp. All rights reserved./courtesy Everett Collection)The Phantom Menace would also turn this essential idea on its head by revealing there are only two Sith Lords at any given time: a master and an apprentice. A definite innovation as the evildoers in “The Star Wars” – a Darth Vader more like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) than the masked character voiced by James Earl Jones, a scheming council of bureaucrats,  and a narcissistic Emperor named Cos Dashit – are some of the least developed ideas in the entire script. But the Sith, as realized in The Phantom Menace, still derives from a concept first expressed with Skywalker and Annikin. The Phantom Menace will never be the movie a lot of Star Wars fans want it to be. In fact, no version of Episode I could ever live up to the hype and speculation accrued over the 16-year break between it and Return of the Jedi. But it is the purest form of the story George Lucas was always trying to tell: a Flash Gordon–inspired epic of space knights trying to defend a benevolent monarch from an encroaching tyranny. Perhaps in trying to recreate that story within the established Star Wars framework hobbled it. Or, perhaps, the story was always just too idiosyncratic with its various influences and technical challenges to work in the way the more spartan Star Wars did for viewers across the years. And yet, Lucas managed to finally realize that original creative spark with as few compromises as possible. Whether you think the end result is good or bad, Fresh or Rotten, there is something to admire in that pursuit as well.Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace was released in theaters May 19, 1999Like this? This week s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news (the stories about what movies Hollywood is working on for you next), covering such titles as Birds of Prey, Fast Furious 9, and The Matrix 4.This WEEK S TOP STORYKEANU REEVES IS ON BOARD FOR THE MATRIX 4What Do We Know About The Matrix 4?The Matrix 4 is officially happening! Here s everything we already know about Neo s upcoming return.Posted by The Rotten Tomatoes Channel on Thursday, August 22, 2019Ever since George Lucas ended his original Star Wars story cycle with Return of the Jedi in 1983, the trilogy has been perceived as the most popular way to sequelize a popular film. That is, until someone realizes that a perceived demand is still out there, and then nicely tied-together trilogies lead to movies like Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and most recently, Toy Story 4. The surprise success of The Matrix (Certified Fresh at 88%) in 1999 quickly led to sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions (which ended the trilogy on a downtick both critically and at commercially). This week, four years after the disappointment of Jupiter Ascending (Rotten at 27%), Lana Wachowski confirmed that The Matrix 4 is moving forward with both Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss returning as Neo and Trinity. Filming is expected to start in early 2020, and already this week, two key creative roles were filled: Wachowski is working with returning concept artists Geof Darrow and Steve Skroce, which suggests a unity in creature and production design. But in one departure, original trilogy cinematographer Bill Pope will be replaced by John Toll, who won back-to-back Academy Awards in 1994 and 1995 for Legends of the Fall and Braveheart (Toll s next film is Harriet). Warner Bros hasn t announced a release date for The Matrix 4 yet, but the filming start date suggests sometime in 2021 or 2022.Other Top Headlines1. BOND 25 OFFICIALLY TITLED NO TIME TO DIE(Photo by Francois Duhamel/©Columbia Pictures)After being called just James Bond 25 since the 2015 release of the 24th film, Spectre, this week we finally learned that the title will be No Time to Die. This makes Daniel Craig s final film as James Bond the fourth movie in the franchise with the word Die or Dies in the title, following Live or Let Die, Tomorrow Never Dies, and Die Another Day, breaking the tie with the opposite words (You Only Live Twice, Live and Let Die, and The Living Daylights). The title also plays as a reference to the news last month that Captain Marvel co-star Lashana Lynch will be playing a new Agent 007 (ostensibly after James Bond retires). MGM has scheduled No Time to Die for release on April 8, 2020, as currently the highest profile film scheduled that month (its closest big competition is Disney s Mulan on March 27, 2020).2. MARGOT ROBBIE S BIRDS OF PREY TO FEATURE JOHN WICK-STYLE ACTION(Photo by Clay Enos / © Warner Bros. )One way that Marvel Studios changed the perception of who could direct action movies was by working with a series of directors whose backgrounds were not in the genre. We re thinking here of comedy director Peyton Reed on the two Ant-Man movies, horror director Scott Derrickson and Doctor Strange, the indie directors of Captain Marvel, and even the Russo brothers, who were best known for directing TV s Community before taking on Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Warner Bros. has recently followed suit with Joker (from the director of The Hangover) and Shazam! (from the director of Lights Out). Next year s Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (2/7/2020) was likewise directed by Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs), who we learned this week will be assisted in reshoots of some action sequences by director Chad Stahelski. Before making his directorial debut in 2014 with John Wick (he also directed the sequels), Stahelski worked as stunt and fight coordinator on dozens of movies, including V for Vendetta, The Hunger Games, Speed Racer, and The Wolverine.3. HOBBS AND SHAW VACUUM IN FAST AND FURIOUS 9 TO BE PARTLY REPLACED BY MICHAEL ROOKER(Photo by Marvel Studios)Now that Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham s Hobbs and Shaw (Fresh at 67%) characters have successfully been spun off into their own franchise (presumably), they re not expected to be returning in next year s Fast and Furious 9 (5/22/2020). As with many other franchises that have run this long, Universal regularly introduces new characters in each new film, and this week, we learned that the new additions to Fast and Furious 9 will include fan favorite Michael Rooker. (In addition to playing Yondu in the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Rooker also co-starred in The Walking Dead.) Although the nature of his role wasn t otherwise specified, Rooker will reportedly play a new character named Buddy. Michael Rooker is the ninth film s second major new cast member following John Cena, who signed on for Fast and Furious 9 in June.4. CHRIS PRATT S NEXT TO BE SCI-FI THRILLER GHOST DRAFT (Photo by Walt Disney Studios)At various points in the last year or so, Chris Pratt was expected to be filming both the (possibly shelved) action movie Cowboy Ninja Viking and Marvel s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (not shelved, but it now has to wait for director James Gunn to finish The Suicide Squad). Instead, the next live-action movie (not counting Pixar s Onward) Pratt will star in will probably be the science fiction thriller Ghost Draft. The premise involves a future war that humanity is losing against an alien race, leading to a plan that involves using time travel to recruit soldiers from the past (possibly our present) to fight in the present (our future) time travel is so much fun to explain, isn t it? Chris Pratt s fellow Marvel co-star J.K. Simmons (A.K.A. J. Jonah Jameson) is now in talks to play Pratt s father, while Betty Gilpin (from Netflix s GLOW), Sam Richardson (HBO s Veep), and stand-up comedian Theo Von are also in talks to co-star in Ghost Draft, which will be directed by Chris McKay (The LEGO Batman Movie).5. ROBERT RODRIGUEZ SINGS TO NETFLIX, WE CAN BE HEROES (Photo by Gabriel Olsen/Getty Images)David Bowie s song Heroes didn t even crack the Top 100 in the USA when it was released in 1977, but the song has had a much longer legacy since, including frequent use in movie trailers. Netflix is also now planning a superhero movie called We Can Be Heroes (from the song s chorus), which will be written, produced and directed by Robert Rodriguez, who is coming off his recent futuristic action film, Alita: Battle Angel (just this side of Fresh at 60%). The project already has a cast attached including Priyanka Chopra (TV s Quantico), Pedro Pascal (HBO s Game of Thrones), Boyd Holbrook, Sung Kang, and Christian Slater. The premise itself involves the children of Earth’s superheroes [after their parents have been kidnapped by alien invaders] . [who] must team up and learn to work together if they want to save their parents and the world. 6. TRACY MORGAN JOINS COMING 2 AMERICA(Photo by Ali Paige Goldstein/Paramount)Although other studios continue to pull movies out of December, 2020 release dates (including Disney, who moved Cruella to the summer of 2021 this week), Paramount Pictures is sticking with Coming 2 America, which is now one of only five movies scheduled that month. (The other four are The Croods 2, Dune, West Side Story, and the video game adaptation Uncharted.) The sequel to the 1989 hit comedy Coming to America already had stars both old (Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, John Amos, and James Earl Jones) and new (Leslie Jones, KiKi Layne, Wesley Snipes), but a few more names were added this week as well. Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock star Tracy Morgan was the biggest of the new stars announced, as he will be playing the hustler brother of Leslie Jones character, who is the mother of Prince Akeem s son, the result of a one-night-stand. Rotimi (TV s Power) also signed on for a role this week, as did Nomzano Mbatha and Garcelle Beauvais, who is actually reprising one of her first movie roles ever, as a rose petal princess. 7. KERRY WASHINGTON AND STERLING K. BROWN TO PAIR UP AS SHADOW FORCE(Photo by Eli Winston, Priscilla Grant/Everett Collection)We don t yet know which studio will win the auction, but a new action project called Shadow Force is now attracting bids across Hollywood. Compared to a fresh take on the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie romantic action movie, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the Shadow Force pitch comes with two of TV s most popular stars already attached: Kerry Washington (Scandal) and Sterling K. Brown (This is Us). The details pretty much end there, but if we re meant to make direct comparisons to Mr. and Mrs. Smith, then Brown and Washington might be playing contract killers who are both married to each other, and who are hired to kill each other (but that s just a guess).8. LIAM NEESON FOLLOWING UP HIS SNOW PLOW MOVIE WITH THE ICE ROAD(Photo by Maria Marin/©Sony Classics)It might be pure coincidence that these two films share similar themes, but in the same year that Liam Neeson s snow plow driver action movie Cold Pursuit (Fresh at 70%) was released, the Irish star is taking on a new movie that could easily live in the same universe. Neeson is now signed to star in the action adventure The Ice Road as a big rig ice road driver who, after a remote diamond mine collapses in the far northern regions of Canada, must lead an impossible rescue mission over a frozen ocean to save the trapped miners. The Ice Road will be directed by Jonathan Hensleigh, whose career Tomatometer (mostly as screenwriter) sports nine Rotten scores and just one Fresh one for 2011 s Kill the Irishman. It s not yet known if Cold Pursuit and The Ice Road will be followed by a third cold weather driving movie to complete a thematic trilogy (perhaps about driving a pack of sled dogs?).9. MARVEL AND SONY PARTING WAYS OVER FUTURE SPIDER-MAN MOVIES What Will Happen If Spider-Man Leaves the MCU?What will the MCU look like without Spider-Man? We re breaking down what the Sony/Disney split means for fans.Posted by The Rotten Tomatoes Channel on Wednesday, August 21, 2019If you follow online movie news at all (and by reading this far into this column, we suspect that you do), then you already know that Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are parting ways over future plans for Spider-Man movies. Having said that, hopefully we can still give you some details you may not be aware of. First, to elaborate, Kevin Feige will no longer be involved with Sony s plans for Spider-Man movies after Sony reportedly rejected an offer from Disney to share costs (and profits) in a 50/50 deal. Sony then responded with a series of Twitter responses that used words like mischaracterized and disappointed, which may have been a response to criticism from some fans who were quick to side with Disney, Feige, and Marvel Studios. It s worth noting that Sony Pictures was also able to deliver both Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse without Feige s help, which might have fueled their resolve. This week s news also came just a few days after Spider-Man: Far from Home became Sony s biggest box office hit ever. As for Tom Holland, he s expected to continue to star as Sony s Spider-Man (his contract still has two movies left, plus he could re-sign), and he s also working with Sony again soon as the star of their video game adaptation Uncharted (12/18/2020). As for Sony s plans, they retain their movie rights to over 900 Spider-Man-related Marvel characters, including Jared Leto s Morbius (7/31/2020), Tom Hardy s Venom 2 (10/2/2020), and other movies in development, like Kraven the Hunter, Black Cat, Silk, Silver Sable, The Sinister Six, and the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.Like this? k Widow 2 set in the five-year gap between Thanos s (Josh Brolin) death and Scott Lang s (Paul Rudd) return from the Quantum Realm. Would Natasha be as weary as she seems in Endgame? Why would she feel that way if she reestablished ties with Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz), and Alexi Shostakov (David Harbour). Did they get Blipped? Or did another falling out occur, leaving her to run the Avengers with occasional in-person visits from Steve Rogers (Chris Evans)? Alternatively, a sequel could see Nat and Yelena teaming up for another quip-filled adventure as the Red Room still needs further dismantling. Also, we ll point out here that another objective of Black Widow was to establish Yelena as a major Marvel player going forward, so we expect any Black Widow sequel would feature her. That said, a Marvel more comfortable with prequels could go back to the Budapest operation (even if we got the gist of what transpired in Black Widow) or even focus on a story in which Natasha is the villain during her time as a Red Room agent. More prequels mean more possibilities while still maintaining the deaths and actions of certain characters a feat even the comics can t pull off!Implications for the Hawkeye Disney+ Series(Photo by ©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)But speaking of Yelena, the film s most direct nod to Phase Four comes during the film s post-credit stinger, when the former Black Widow accepts a mission to hunt down Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner), a thread that will be picked up in the upcoming Hawkeye television series. Shot in late 2020 and early 2021, the Disney+ series will see Clint training or assisting Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), a new Hawkeye with issues all her own. Also, we re pretty sure they re going to run afoul of tracksuit-loving mobsters and adopt an adorable golden retriever with a love of pizza. The project was one of Marvel Studios worst kept secrets, with its existence long-rumored and Steinfeld s part in it leaking a year before the studio made the news official and even then, photos of the actor in costume appeared on the internet a good week before studio president Kevin Feige finally confirmed her participation at the December 2020 Disney Investor s Day presentation. Another rumor about the show indicated Pugh would be making her first post-Black Widow appearance in the series. Then, in December of 2020, it was reported that Pugh officially joined the cast of the series alongside a handful of others. Just a couple of days ago, in an interview with Variety specifically about the post-credits stinger at the end of Black Widow, director Cate Shortland and Pugh essentially confirmed what everyone suspected when Pugh confessed that she didn’t ever really imagine that [her role in the MCU] would continue quite so quickly. It s worth noting, though, that as Black Widow was originally slated for release last year, the Hawkeye reference sets up something well into the Disney+ slate. It sidesteps the initially announced programs in favor of what will be Marvel Studio s sixth television program, although there is a nod to another TV show we ll talk about in a moment. As it stands now, Hawkeye will debut less than year after Black Widow, which means Yelena will be fresher in viewer s minds when she inevitably beats the living daylights out of Clint. The Contessa As Phase Four s Fury(Photo by ©Walt Disney Company)Of course, the stinger also features an appearance by Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). According to Feige, she was always meant to debut in Black Widow, with the stinger serving as a forward link to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. But since her debut ended up occurring in that series, the Contessa s appearance here has a slightly different effect it amplifies, rather than establishes, the notion that she s serving as Phase Four s answer to Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). As we theorized after TFaTWS s finale, the Contessa is collecting a team of her own. From her conversation with Yelena, we can gather that Yelena already works for her by the time she learns of Natasha s death on Vormir. But just what is the Contessa s aim in building her own Avengers? The character s comic book history offer some clues, as the character evolved into the most adept rogue agent ever trained. In her lifetime as a comic book character, she has betrayed S.H.I.E.L.D., Hydra, and seemingly Leviathan, although she could still be loyal to that group. So far in the MCU, the Contessa s subordinates include an ex-Russian spy and a failed Captain America. That doesn t feel like an accident, despite whatever promise of glory and country she feeds to John Walker (Wyatt Russell).(Photo by ©Walt Disney Company)Is it possible she runs the current incarnation of the MCU s Leviathan, the Soviet scientific research and espionage agency we mentioned in our round-up of Five Things to Remember Before You See Black Widow? Like Hydra, it was built to survive, and she could easily be its director. Then again, she could be working with Fury. The two have a long history in the comics, and she could be collecting Phase Four characters on his behalf. The motive: a further defense against whatever foe is up in space that Fury is planning for with the Skrulls (as glimpsed in the Far From Home post-post-credits stinger). But that all depends on whether or not the Contessa is in any way altruistic.Lastly, there is always the possibility that she herself is a Skrull and furthering an agenda to be revealed in Secret Invasion another Phase Four Disney+ series due next year.No matter the true answer, it is interesting to see a character assembling a new team for a shadowy purpose.Taskmaster As A Continuing Threat(Photo by Jay Maidment/©Marvel Studios)We admit this one may be built on a flimsy premise Marvel seemingly cast Olga Kurylenko for a two-line role in Black Widow. But a face as familiar as hers suggests to us that we will see Taskmaster again. For one thing, she s a great hand-to-hand foe. Imagine Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) or Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) facing an opponent who knows their every move. Try to think of the quip Clint will deliver after she squarely trounces him.But beyond the physical threat she poses to just about everyone, there is also a further story to tell about her. As opposed to her comic book counter, who is often just a mercenary, Antonia s story is one of trauma and the horrible realization that her own father put her in this situation. How will she come to terms with that? Will her freedom from mind control and apparent turn away from evil at the end of Black Widow actually stick, or will her anger lead her down the villain s path? If the latter, will she be clever enough to organize some of the villains herself, or will she fall in with someone like Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl)?(Photo by Adrienn Szabo/©Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures)Come to think of it, one of the few things Marvel Studios has yet to attempt is a villain team-up. Is it time for the Masters of Evil? Granted, they ll need a slight rebranding as that name hardly suits Zemo s style or politics.Marvel could also utilize Taskmaster as a recurring villain, which the franchise has done on occasion (not counting big bads like Thanos or Loki). Antagonists generally die or get completely de-fanged by the end of a Marvel movie, and one of comic book Taskmaster s great strengths is his resiliency. Antonia could prove more successful at the recurring villain role than Crossbones (Frank Grillo) or Batroc (Georges St-Pierre). Also, as Taskmaster fights everyone in the comics, Antonia could appear in anything from an Eternals sequel to the Moon Knight series to Blade.Black Widow is in theaters and streaming on Disney+ with Premier Access now.On an Apple device? Ghcxuf Tom Hardy is the latest actor to portray notorious gangster Al Capone, and from the sound of it, nobody else ever needs to portray him again. Writer-director Josh Trank’s Capone is dividing critics, but everyone agrees that Hardy’s performance is out of this world, for better or worse. The movie itself sounds pretty crazy, too, as it depicts the criminal’s final year, when he was suffering from dementia. Right now, we can all use something out of the ordinary in our entertainment, and with Hardy shooting for the moon in the lead, Capone sounds like nothing we’ve ever seen before. Who isn’t enticed by that? Here’s what critics are saying about Capone:How crazy is Capone? It’s nuts, it’s a mess and it’s pretty damn entertaining if you don’t mind characters pooping the bed and getting stabbed in the neck.  Steve Pond, The WrapIs Capone a fascinatingly idiosyncratic twilight-of-the-mobster drama? Or is it a Saturday Night Live sketch with pretensions? It may be a bit of both.  Owen Gleiberman, VarietyTidal waves, CGI alligators, characters who cut their own eyeballs out of their skulls – when was the last time you saw a movie about mobsters that had any of this stuff?  Chris Evangelista, SlashfilmIt’s not pleasing, but it’s too weird to be boring… You sit there and wonder how bizarre this movie is going to get and, scene by scene, you find out.  Mick LaSalle, San Francisco ChronicleWhat begins as a gonzo lark quickly becomes exhausting.  Richard Lawson, Vanity FairIs it worth seeing as a fun diversion? As nutty as Capone gets as a karmic fever dream for its violent subject, it’s also really watchable in a break-your-brain sort of way. Brian Truitt, USA TodayAll hell breaks loose… and viewers have to make up their minds: Are you going to run from this whacked-out twilight of the gods, or give in to it? Steve Pond, The WrapThis hollow if perversely watchable exercise in self-annihilation builds to a violent finale that finally makes good on the biopic’s sordid potential. David Ehrlich, IndieWireStarved as we are for big, exciting diversion right now, I won’t blame you if you decide to give Hardy that attention. Maybe you’ll see something worthy in the raving crypt keeper. Richard Lawson, Vanity Fair(Photo by Vertical Entertainment)Is Tom Hardy the biggest reason to see the movie? The borderline self-parodying Method madness of Tom Hardy s performance does kind of demand to be seen. David Rooney, Hollywood ReporterHardy’s psychotic portrayal is compelling and worth the price of admission. Travis Hopson, Punch Drunk CriticsThe combination of Hardy’s performance and the energy Trank and his crew bring to these fever-dream sequences make the whole project worth it. Aaron Neuwirth, We Live EntertainmentHow is his performance?Hardy, all guttural growls and tics, seems to be vying for the prize of Most Acting. Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment WeeklyHardy’s performance is undoubtedly so unlike anything we’ve ever seen. Brian Truitt, USA TodayA career-best performance, which is never anything short of fascinating. Josh Wilding, ComicBookMovie.comHardy gets to go as big as he possibly can… He shuffles, he stumbles, he mumbles, he drools. Buried under make-up, there are shots here where he doesn’t even look human. Chris Evangelista, SlashfilmHardy’s on a roll with bonkers performances… if he cannot figure out a way to dial into the frequency of his directors, people will stop seeing a master performer at work. Marshall Shaffer, The PlaylistYes, Hardy chews the scenery… his over-the-top destructive nature comes across as cartoonish because we’re unable to contrast that malice with moments of calm, collective authority. Jared Mobarak, The Film Stage(Photo by Vertical Entertainment)Who does he remind you of?Hardy once again combines the fearless commitment of early Marlon Brando with the utter unintelligibility of much older Marlon Brando. David Ehrlich, IndieWireTom Hardy playing dying Al Capone is as if Nick Nolte were playing the First vampire from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Richard Lawson, Vanity FairHardy s Fonse more than anything recalls Al Pacino s crazed mugging as the Capone-inspired Alphonse Big Boy Caprice in Dick Tracy. David Rooney, Hollywood ReporterWhat s this about him pooping himself?Hardy turns his cast into unwilling straight men for his routine, such as during a tense interview with FBI agents that ends with Capone loudly farting and defecating himself. Marshall Shaffer, The PlaylistCapone routinely soils himself, chomps on cigars and later carrots, accuses loved ones and employees of being assassins, shoots an alligator. Richard Lawson, Vanity FairHey, you haven’t seen Al Capone until you’ve seen him chomping on a carrot and wielding a machine gun while wearing a droopy diaper. Steve Pond, The WrapYou tell me if you want to see a movie featuring not one, not two, but three separate scenes in which the increasingly feeble Capone loses control of his bladder and/or his bowels. Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-TimesNot only is he incontinent – yes, there are multiple, uncomfortably lengthy scenes where Al Capone sh s himself in this movie, folks – he’s also prone to hallucinations. Chris Evangelista, SlashfilmThis movie is not going to win points for its handling of the indignities of dementia. David Rooney, Hollywood ReporterIs this a comedy?Of course, it’s funny. Intentionally? How could it not be? Mick LaSalle, San Francisco ChronicleThere is a grotesque humor… Trank’s macabre humor never feels like mockery. Hope Madden, Columbus Underground(Photo by Vertical Entertainment)Are there any other great performances?Linda Cardellini flexes more in the role of Capone’s wife Mae than she has in her many other turns as put-upon spouse. She’s a great sparring partner for Hardy. Hope Madden, Columbus UndergroundLinda Cardellini is excellent as Capone’s devoted wife, and Matt Dillon (always underrated) has a solid role as one of Al’s old cronies. Of course, McLachlan is fun to watch as well. Chris Bumbray, JoBlo s Movie EmporiumHow does it compare to, say, The Irishman?Think Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman taken to the extreme. Travis Hopson, Punch Drunk CriticsImagine the last 10 minutes of The Irishman but as a 100-minute film. Chris Bumbray, JoBlo s Movie EmporiumYou could think of Capone as The Irishman as reimagined by David Lynch. Steve Pond, The WrapWhile Scorsese utilizes Frank Sheeran hanging on the brink of death to explore morality and mortality in the gangster genre, what Trank has to say about a similar era in a dying man’s life is more nightmarish fever-dream clouded by paranoia and dread. Marshall Shaffer, The PlaylistThe last half hour of The Irishman crossed with the doddering-legend parts of Citizen Kane, all mixed in with Hardy’s apparent desire to play the creature in Frankenstein. Owen Gleiberman, VarietyAre there other comparisons? This is primarily a head movie that unfolds in the sepulchral chambers of Capone s addled skull with a heavy load of woozy Lynchian weirdness and a dash of Kubrick s The Shining. David Rooney, Hollywood ReporterImagine a Ken Russell artist biopic, not one about Liszt or Mahler but about a befuddled blob. Mick LaSalle, San Francisco ChronicleA Twilight Zone riff on the This is Your Life template wherein the subject is transported through a Jacob’s Ladder-esque hole towards oblivion. Jared Mobarak, The Film StageCapone begins to feel like a riff on A Christmas Carol, with Scarface standing in for old Scrooge. But there’s no redemption here. Chris Evangelista, Slashfilm(Photo by Vertical Entertainment)Is it going to get any Oscar love?It would be a sign of a truly, truly broken year if this hideous indulgence of a film gained any of that kind of traction. Richard Lawson, Vanity FairIt may not be Oscar worthy, but it’s an odd duck that’s kind of a perfect change of pace flick during these strange times. Joey Magidson, Hollywood NewsIs it a good comeback for Josh Trank? An undeniable return to form which should put him back on the radar in a big way. Josh Wilding, ComicBookMovie.comCapone isn’t a knockout comeback, but it’s an undeniably striking and bold endeavor that transcends genre constraints and conventional molds. Jared Mobarak, The Film StageTrank attempts to do a David Cronenberg or David Lynch style movie, a move that’s a major reset for his career. Chris Bumbray, JoBlo s Movie EmporiumPut it this way… If his next movie is like Fantastic Four, I don’t want to see it. But if his next movie is as purely nuts as Capone, I’m there. Mick LaSalle, San Francisco ChronicleCapone will be released on VOD on Tuesday, May 12. 😈😈

Sick of the rumors and the tabloids, musician Demi Lovato told journalists during a panel for her upcoming YouTube docu-series, Dancing with the Devil that she wants to set the record straight about what led to her 2018 overdose — and the ramifications from it.In the docuseries, she discusses that she had three strokes and a heart attack after the 2018 incident. Unfortunately, I was left with brain damage and I still deal with the effects of that today. I don t drive a car because I have blind spots in my vision, she said during the panel. I also, for a long time, had a really hard time reading it was a big deal when I was able to read out of a book, which was two months later because my vision was so blurry. I dealt with a lot of the repercussions and I feel like they, kind of, are still there to remind me of what could happen if I ever get into a dark place again. And I m grateful for those reminders. I m so grateful that I was someone that didn’t have to do a lot of rehabbing. The rehabbing came on the emotional side and the therapeutic side internally. Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil premieres March 23 on YouTube.Girls5Eva Isn t a Regular Show — It s a Cool ShowGirls5Eva is a musical comedy about four women who were members of a 1990s girl group. Created by Meredith Scardino, it will have plenty of catchy musical numbers. But like fellow executive producers Tina Fey, Robert Carlock and Jeff Richmond s Netflix series, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, all the fun and glitter will mask something much more serious.“I wanted to write a show about women in my age group and be able to talk about all the things that you go through as being a woman in your forties,” Scardino said during the Peacock show s TCA press panel, which included stars Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Paula Pell, and Busy Philipps who play the now (more) adult members of an girl group that was hot in the 1990s.There is also the subject of owning your narrative. As young popstars, Girls5Eva had no control over what they sang, wore or did, said Philipps, a professed fan of real-life girl group legends, Spice Girls. Now they re in a different place. How do you take ownership of your own story and rewrite it? Girls5Eva will premiere soon on Peacock.Plus: Peacock s Punky Power!, Ex-Rated Digs Into Past Relationships, a John Wayne Gacy Docu-Series, and MorePeacock s revival of Punky Brewster — or as star Soleil Moon Frye called it during the show s TCA panel, a continuation — premieres February 25 on Peacock. Like the original from the 1980s, it is a multi-camera comedy about the importance of family (however that word may be defined). But, also like the original, it gets into some heavy topics. The new version introduces Izzy (Quinn Copeland), a foster child who — like Punky — was abandoned by her mother. The original Punky Brewster dealt with so many real issues and for us creatively, to keep that authenticity was absolutely pivotal and important to all of us involved, Frye said. And so the original Punky had humor and laughter. And you also were dealing with pain. And life is messy and we go through rollercoasters of emotions. And so, to continue that honesty was incredibly important to everyone. If you have a suggestion for a movie or show you think we should do an episode on, let us know in the comments, or email us at rtiswrong@rottentomatoes.com.Meet the hostsJacqueline Coley is an editor at Rotten Tomatoes, with a focus on awards and indie coverage but with a passion for everything, from the MCU to musicals and period pieces.
