跑跑卡丁车达人任务采用百度引擎9(Baidu 7)As more and more people are compelled to practice social distancing and encouraged to stay home, as movie theaters temporarily shutter their doors, and as studios continue to pull their scheduled 2020 films off the release calendar, we ve decided to reformat this weekly Critics Consensus column to focus on titles that are newly available on the home entertainment market. With that in mind, our list of digital new releases this week includes an action-comedy sequel 17 years in the making, a worthwhile video game-inspired adventure, and a ho-hum horror sequel. See below for the full list.

Today s Ketchup brings you another 10 headlines from the world of film development news, covering titles such as Candyman, Pinocchio, Spider-Women, and Venom 2.This WEEK S TOP STORYGUILLERMO DEL TORO REVEALS OVER 15 MOVIES READY TO GO(Photo by Elizabeth Goodenough/Everett Collection)Long before Guillermo del Toro won the Best Picture Oscar this year for The Shape of Water, it was well known that he had a long list of shelved movies in his past. That little golden man on his mantle has changed a lot for GDT, including his new deal at Fox Searchlight that basically set him up with his own mini-studio for horror/genre films. This week, Guillermo del Toro took to Twitter to list over 15 unproduced screenplays that he has completely finished, which are basically ready to go projects for any studio that wants to work with him on them. The most common theme to the list is remakes, including The Count of Monte Cristo, Fantastic Voyage, The Haunted Mansion (which is Disney s), Nightmare Alley, The Witches, and Beauty and the Beast (with Emma Watson,  who eventually starred in Disney s remake instead). There s also the spooky DC Comics super team Justice League Dark (featuring Constantine and Swamp Thing), adaptations of the novels Drood and List of 7, and H.P. Lovecraft s At the Mountains of Madness (which infamously almost got made with Tom Cruise, at one point). Other intriguing titles include The Buried Giant, The Coffin, Mephisto s Bridge, and Superstitious. One of them is just called Secret Project (Untitled), which might be especially interesting since, at one point, The Shape of Water was also basically known as Secret Project (Untitled). Probably the least likely of these projects to ever actually happen are Pacific Rim 2 (since it was replaced by Pacific Rim: Uprising) and a pilot episode for a once-planned Hulk TV show reboot. So, will any studios now step up to any of these?Fresh Developments1. SPIDER-VERSE SEQUEL AND SPINOFF ALREADY PLANNED(Photo by Sony Pictures)Sony s animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is still two weeks away from release, but it also already has a 100% Tomatometer from 49 reviews to date. That has to be part of the reason that Sony has announced early development has started on both a direct sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and a spinoff focusing on Spider-Women. That spinoff will focus on three generations of female superheroes with spider powers, with Spider-Gwen from the first movie likely to be one of the three. Other possibilities might include Jessica Drew (the original Spider-Woman), Madame Web, Arachne, Araña, and Spider-Girl. (To make things confusing, there have been three Spider-Women, two Madame Webs, and two Spider-Girls.) These two animated films join a growing slate of Marvel movies at Sony that also includes Venom 2, Morbius (AKA The Living Vampire), Black Cat, Silver Sable, Kraven the Hunter, Jackpot, Nightwatch, and Silk.2. TOM HANKS MAY PLAY GEPPETTO IN DISNEY S PINOCCHIO REMAKE (Photo by Jaap Buitendijk/Walt Disney Studios)2019 is going to be a big year for Disney s remakes of their animated features, with Dumbo (3/29/19), Aladdin (5/24/19), and The Lion King (7/19/19) all scheduled for release. Then, in 2020, we re also going to get Mulan (3/27/20), Maleficent II (5/29/20), and possibly another (Disney has a few untitled movies on their 2020 schedule right now). The studio shows no signs of slowing down, and this week, we received our first casting news for their Pinocchio remake. Toy Story and Saving Mr. Banks star Tom Hanks is now in talks with Disney to play the toymaker Geppetto for director Paul King, whose Paddington 2 is still Certified Fresh at an impressive 100% on the Tomatometer. In related news, Tim Allen (AKA Buzz Lightyear) recently revealed another new detail about next year s Toy Story 4 (6/21/19) while on The Tonight Show, disclosing that Keanu Reeves will be joining the Toy Story franchise as a character that sounds too much like Buzz Lightyear.  The other major sequel that Keanu Reeves has coming out next year is John Wick: Chapter 3 (5/3/2019).3. RITA MORENO RETURNING IN SPIELBERG S REMAKE OF WEST SIDE STORYWhen filmmakers remake or sequelize classic films, they frequently cast one of the original stars (Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins Returns is a perfect example of that). For his remake of the 10-time Academy Award-winning 1961 musical West Side Story, Steven Spielberg is following suit. EGOT winner Rita Moreno played Anita in the original West Side Story, and she is now set to co-star in Spielberg s remake of the film. Moreno s character will be named Valentina, a reimagined version of the corner store owner named Doc (played in the original film by Ned Glass). Moreno is the second new cast member following the casting of Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) last month as Tony. It is not yet known if Twin Peaks co-stars (and the original s two male leads) Richard Beymer and Russ Tamblyn will also be cast in the West Side Story remake (Natalie Wood, who played Maria in the original, died in 1981).4. JORDAN PEELE PRODUCING CANDYMAN REMAKE FOR 2020 (Photo by TriStar Pictures)In September, we first heard that Get Out director Jordan Peele was producing a remake of the 1992 horror film Candyman. Just two months later, the Candyman remake already has a director, a studio, and a release date. MGM has kind of made remakes their thing, with recent films like Ben-Hur, The Magnificent Seven, Death Wish, Tomb Raider, Overboard, and A Star is Born. The Candyman remake will be directed by Nia DaCosta, who made her debut with the indie modern Western Little Woods (currently Fresh at 100%). MGM and Universal Pictures have scheduled Candyman for release on June 12, 2020, which puts it a week after Wonder Woman 1984 and the week before a secret Pixar/Disney film.5. DC COMICS MOVES FORWARD WITH BLUE BEETLE SOLO MOVIE(Photo by DC Comics)Since 1939, there have been three iterations of the DC Comics superhero called Blue Beetle, starting with this one, after which, for the longest run, there was Justice League member Ted Kord (best known, probably, for teaming up with Booster Gold). The first Blue Beetle was sort of like Shazam, and the second was similar in some ways to Batman, but starting in 2006, the third Blue Beetle had a symbiote that makes him sort of like Venom. That Blue Beetle is a young hero named Jaime Reyes, and this week, Warner Bros revealed their plans to make Blue Beetle  the first stand-alone title to feature a Latino lead. (It should be noted that the star of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is Miles Morales, whose mom is Puerto Rican.) Blue Beetle will be written by Mexican-born screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who also wrote the upcoming remake of Scarface.6. VIOLA DAVIS BRINGING THE FIGHTING SHIRLEY CHISHOLM TO AMAZON (AND THEATERS) Although Netflix is probably the most prolific streaming service, it was actually Amazon Studios that made history in 2017 when Manchester by the Sea made it the first streaming service to be nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award. Earlier this week, the news broke that Viola Davis JuVee Productions had set up a new deal at Amazon Studios, and just three days later, we learned what their first project will be. Confirming Amazon s continued interest in producing the sorts of films that can compete for major awards, Davis has set up the political biopic The Fighting Shirley Chisholm. In 1972, U.S. Representative Shirley Chisholm made history twice as both the first African American (of either major party) and the first female Democrat to become an official candidate for President of the United States. The Fighting Shirley Chisholm will be directed by Maggie Betts (Novitiate), working from a screenplay by Adam Countee (of TV s Community, Silicon Valley, and The Mindy Project).7. DONALD GLOVER, RIHANNA, AND LETITIA WRIGHT HEADED FOR GUAVA ISLAND(Photo by Guy D'Alema/FX)This week, the first teaser trailer for next summer s The Lion King remake broke records for Disney, but the movie s star, Donald Glover, is also working on another movie for 2019 as well. Glover (a.k.a. Childish Gambino), Rihanna, and Letitia Wright (Shuri from Black Panther) reportedly went to Cuba this August to film a secret movie that was revealed this week to be called Guava Island. The first teaser trailer doesn t really reveal anything else about the project, except that it s a Childish Gambino movie directed by frequent Glover collaborator Hiro Murai, who also directed episodes of Atlanta and several Childish Gambino music videos, including This is America.8. KINGSMAN PREQUEL ATTRACTS IMPRESSIVE CAST(Photo by Giles Keyte/20th Century Fox Film Corp.)When Kingsman: The Secret Service was released in 2015, it was Certified Fresh at 75% on the Tomatometer. Last year s sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, however, did considerably poorer, scoring just 52%. With that in mind, we re tempted to call this week s news Rotten, except that it s, well, kind of cool. First, it s sounding like there will actually be two Kingsman movies filming in 2019: a prequel and a proper Kingsman 3. The prequel is the one that sparked the biggest headlines, as director Matthew Vaughn has reportedly cast (or is negotiating to cast) Daniel Brühl (Captain America: Civil War), Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister from Game of Thrones), Rhys Ifans (The Amazing Spider-Man), and Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort from the Harry Potter franchise). The Kingsman prequel will reportedly be a period drama about the actual tailor shop that serves as a front for the secret British spy agency. It was another fight for the top spot at the box office between the Demon Slayer and the Mortal Kombatants – though this weekend s earnings suggest repeat business is not in the cards for theatrical viewings just yet. Even though the options have been limited, the big titles still continue to deal with challenges of reduced capacity and the alternative to view them at home at the time of premiere or after a few weeks. Godzilla vs. Kong, Tenet, and The Croods: A New Age are still the only films to gross more than million since the pandemic began; though, on the bright side, the million club is starting to get more crowded and it looks like last week’s releases may be headed for membership there.King of the Crop: Demon Slayer Finishes on Top of Mortal Kombat, as Both Aim To Crack Million(Photo by © Aniplex / Courtesy Everett Collection)Funimation’s hit anime Demon Slayer, which topped the box office this weekend after coming in second last weekend, had actually been slowly gaining on Mortal Kombat’s total earnings throughout the week. Mortal Kombat led .32 million to .14 million after last Sunday; by Thursday, the race closed to .85 million–.70 million. While Demon may still trail overall, congratulations is in order to it pulling out the victory this weekend by an estimated margin of .4 million–.2 million; however, you may note that is a significant drop-off from last weekend for both genre films, and with no real competition to draw people away. Up until now, the biggest drop-off for a wide release during the pandemic was the 67.1 percent fall of Wonder Woman 1984 from Christmas weekend to New Year s weekend. With a respective .4 million and .2 million each, Demon Slayer and Mortal Kombat fell 70 percent and 73 percent.That brings their estimated totals to million for Mortal Kombat and .2 million for Demon Slayer on their 10th days of release, which is higher than Wonder Woman 1984 (.43 million), Tom Jerry (.84 million), and Raya and the Last Dragon (.04 million). All of those films are now part of the million– to million–gross club at the moment — and each of them also had or have same-day streaming options. That is something Demon Slayer does not offer as of yet. Those three films also grossed between .42 million and .5 million in their second weekends. The drops could stabilize next week, but looking back to normal times, both Super Troopers 2 and the 2010 A Nightmare on Elm Street remake were the only April wide releases to drop over 70 percent in their second weekends. From their 11th days on, Elm Street grossed just an additional .6 million and Troopers Deux made only .4 million more. That was with theaters open in full and no pandemic. But it was also with more competition. So million is not out of the running for Mortal Kombat and Demon Slayer, but the numbers are suggesting they will more likely be joining the second tier. Then again, given the circumstances, they are still amongst the highest-grossing films during this difficult period in history. The 0 Million Watch: Godzilla vs. Kong Inches Towards Headline-Grabbing Milestone

2. 公平游戏环境
(Photo by HBO)The dawn of a new day breaks on Westeros in “The Last of the Starks,” episode 4 of Game of Thrones season 8. And it’s a grim one.The pyres are piled high with bodies of every stripe: Dothraki, Night’s Watch, Northern warriors, Mormonts, a Dondarrion, and on.How do you follow that? Lots of alcohol.1. Funeral(Photo by HBO)The remaining revengers assemble to say goodbye to the heroes who gave their lives fighting the army of the dead. (The revenging will have to wait – though not for long.)“They were the shields that guarded the realms of men, and we shall never see their like again,” Jon Snow says, in a nod to the Night’s Watch creed.Ghost survived, so we have that to thankful for. We’ll later see that he was battered and had his ear torn, and we wonder why Jon wouldn’t pull a surviving stable boy aside and tell him to – gently – tend to the direwolf, feed him, and give him a bath. That wolf is still covered in wight funk the last time we see him.2. Dinner(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)At dinner, Daenerys legitimizes Gendry: He is now Lord Gendry Baratheon of Storm’s End.Tyrion and Ser Davos continue their strange friendship in the only eulogy that Melisandre will likely receive.“To Arya Stark, the hero of Winterfell,” Daenerys says, but Arya is nowhere to be found.Tyrion outs Brienne as a virgin, which is so not cool to do in public that we really wish Tyrion would never drink again. At least Brienne gets something out of it Then there was the Starbucks cup controversy:You re telling me they had TWO YEARS to put together a decent show and they couldn t even spot the goddamn Starbucks cup in Winterfell??!?! #GameOfThrones pic.twitter.com/8opg7nyydv Jenna Guillaume (@JennaGuillaume) May 6, 20193. Relationship Drama(Photo by Helen Sloan/HBO)Gendry finds Arya, tells her his good news, and proposes to her in a hugely romantic gesture. She turns him down (we think): “I’m not a lady. I never have been. That’s not me.” But she can totally be a “not a lady” with Gendry — in a nice, historic castle with lands and loyal bannermen to grab some ale after work with.Who was that smiling at Podrick after dinner? She’s in for a surprise. Later, he embraces both her and a woman whose advances The Hound spurned. Correction: They’re in for a surprise.Jaime seduces Brienne – “I’ve never slept with a knight before” – then leaves her. On his way out, he confesses to her that he pushed Bran from the tower, he strangled his cousin, and he would have murdered everyone at Riverrun for Cersei: “She’s hateful. And so am I.” Brienne sobs. Been there, girl.Tormund’s wildling heart breaks at dinner over Brienne. The Hound is not interested. Willa says he can touch her, and Tormund miraculously recovers. And Gilly is pregnant. Can’t help but wonder: Will full-Craster Little Sam inherit Horn Hill or this half-Craster–Tarly child?4. Daenerys UnravelsAt dinner, Daenerys becomes crazy-eyed jealous when Tormund puts Jon in the spotlight and calls him “king.” Her seething gets Varys’ attention.Later in private, Daenerys tells Jon she loves him, but their kinship stops him mid-snog. She wants to un-know that he’s Rhaegar’s child. When he tells her that he has to tell Arya and Sansa who he is, she replies, “I’ve never begged for anything, but I’m begging you. Don’t do this. Please.”She’s under stress and people are seeing her sweat. “We’ll rip her out root and stem,” Daenerys says in a strategy session. You can see the mad king ranting and burning Starks in Varys’ eyes when he looks at her.Tyrion and Varys convince Daenerys not to immediately burn down the Red Keep and all of the innocents Cersei has gathered to her side as dragon-fodder should Daenerys attack. When Sansa suggests – Daenerys: stop talking, Sansa.“We have won the Great War. Now we will win the Last War,” Daenerys promises, and looks at Sansa. “In all Seven Kingdoms, men will live without fear and cruelty – under their rightful queen.” (Her attitude will come back to bite Daenerys in the butt when Sansa weighs whether or not to share a big secret.)5. Family DramaDebbie DayJon agonizes during the Stark family meeting in the godswood over whether to tell his sisters that he s really their cousin. Arya calls him “brother,” as in full rights to bogart the TV remote brother. He s dying inside and tells Bran to tell them – he’s not officially responsible for having told them if Bran tells him, right? He never really promised Daenerys that he wouldn’t anyway.Despite promising to keep his secret, Sansa promptly tells Tyrion, who promptly tells Varys, who notes that it’s no longer a secret, but is now “information” (which is a commodity he trades in).“A Targaryen father and a Stark mother – Jon’s the one man alive who might actually be able to keep the North in the Seven Kingdoms,” Varys says.Tyrion calls Varys’ musings “treason.”“You know where my loyalty stands. You know I will never betray the realm,” Varys says, in what may be the most important exchange in the episode.6. R.I.P.(Photo by HBO)When the Targaryen fleet drops anchor off of Dragonstone, Euron Greyjoy attacks. He has mounted scorpions on the front of his ships and unleashes on Rhaegal, who dies horrifically and plunges into the sea. Daenerys moves to attack, but retreats when she realizes how vulnerable Drogon is. Euron then attacks the Targaryen fleet, and, we later find out, takes Missandei prisoner.Tyrion, Daenerys, Grey Worm, and a group of Unsullied arrive at the walls of King’s Landing to deliver a message: surrender and release Missandei of Narth. Instead, The Mountain beheads Missandei, whose last word is “Dracarys,” indicating to her queen, we thought, that she should burn King’s Landing to the ground.(Photo by HBO)Plus, Arya takes the King’s Road with The Hound to settle some “unfinished business.” (Arya says she doesn’t plan on coming back to Winterfell, which sounds ominous – Sansa only just got her sister back. Don t leave me alone with weird Bran!) Bronn negotiates with the Lannister brothers: Their lives in exchange for Highgarden, the former home of the extinct House Tyrell. And, Jon tells Tormund to take Ghost with him beyond the Wall. OK, but who doesn’t hug their direwolf when they leave forever? Bad form, Aegon Targaryen, sixth of his name.Next week on episode 5: The Last War.What was your favorite moment of the episode?

Barely one month after announcing the project, Beyoncé has dropped her latest visual album, titled Black Is King, on the streaming service Disney+. The surprise new release stems from her involvement with last year’s live-action reimagining of The Lion King and is a complimentary work to her 2019 record The Lion King: The Gift. The first reviews of the musical film, which wasn’t screened early for critics, are unanimously positive, recognizing its visual craftsmanship, timeliness, and how it progresses both its material and Beyoncé s own career as an artist. Here’s what critics are saying about Beyoncé s Black Is King:How does this project fit into Beyoncé’s artistic reign?Beyoncé, the master of the visual album, just keeps getting better with each release.  Giselle Au-Nhien Nguyen, Sydney Morning HeraldThe greatest success of Black Is King, with all its ambitions, purposeful revelations and nods by Beyoncé, may be the conformation of its creator and star as the cultural Queen of our time.  Dominic Patten, Deadline[It] is a particularly genius sleight of hand only she could pull off.  Jude Dry, IndieWireIt’s a remarkable addition to the pop world and tribute to her artistry.  Anne Brodie, What She SaidThe product feels like a natural progression in her evolution as an artist… and truly, the outfits are just fabulous — possibly her best to date.  Anna Menta, DeciderBlack Is King doesn’t exactly stand with the best of her previous work — it’s a pleasure but not a landmark — but the Queen Bey goes through it with her head up and her crown intact.  Steve Pond, The Wrap(Photo by Disney+)Is it only for Beyoncé fans? With appearances from Jay-Z, Kelly Rowland, Pharrell and Naomi Campbell, this star-studded film has something for everyone. Chanté Joseph, GuardianThe Queen Bey orchestrated visual album is… well, rather excellent and exciting on various fronts. Dominic Patten, DeadlineHow does it honor the legacy of The Lion King?It bears little resemblance to the Disney film. Anna Menta, DeciderBeyoncé, who lent her voice to Nala in said remake, is here to offer a corrective… a bold and unique offering that’s brimming with Black pride. Amon Warmann, Empire MagazineThe Lion King always was and should have been an African-told story. And while Beyoncé’s lens is certainly an American one, her inclusion of Nigerian, Ghanaian, and Cameroonian collaborators drives home this necessity. Jude Dry, IndieWireThe ties to The Lion King occasionally ground the story in that familiar coming-of-age story, but they just as often feel beside the point. Steve Pond, The WrapThough some sections incorporating dialogue feel a little clunky, the parallel generally works well. Giselle Au-Nhien Nguyen, Sydney Morning HeraldIf the public is tiring of Disney doggedly remaking all of its old animations in live action format, finally some original content is coming out of the project as well. David Smyth, London Evening Standard(Photo by Disney+)What else is Black Is King reminiscent of?Similar in stature and design to Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker film from 1988, Black Is King is clearly structured to be an event release in this time of essentially endless options. Dominic Patten, DeadlineAt times, it feels like Terence Malick’s Tree of Life meets Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther. Jeremy Helligar, VarietyHow are the visuals of this visual album?Black Is King is a visual masterpiece. It’s almost overwhelming. Anna Menta, DeciderIf there is one thing to be said about Black Is King, it’s that it is visually stunning — from beginning to end. The whole thing. Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyEach scene somehow more spectacular than its predecessor, Black Is King is a feast for the eyes. Amon Warmann, Empire MagazineIt’s a sumptuous visual feast, from detailed costuming to choreography. Giselle Au-Nhien Nguyen, Sydney Morning HeraldBlack Is King is a visual feast; it provides several slow-panning scenes of stillness where we absorb the striking beauty and duality of bright colors against deep brown tones. Chanté Joseph, GuardianThis visual feast… finds its moments of glory in the strength of its images, which are more arresting than the story or the subtext. Steve Pond, The Wrap(Photo by Disney+)Who else deserves recognition for the artistry on display?Beyoncé’s fashion is next-level throughout Black Is King… Shout-out to costume designer Zerina Akers for making Bey look fierce, flawless and Afro-fabulous. Chuck Arnold, New York PostEvery single outfit that Beyoncé wears is just absolutely beautiful. Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyThe real star of the visual film, however, is the raw, untapped talent from performers around the world showcasing their rich tradition and culture, history and lineage. Cydney Henderson, USA TodayWhat’s the best musical number? When supermodel Naomi Campbell, Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, and Beyoncé’s fellow former Destiny’s Child Kelly Rowland pop up during Brown Skin Girl, a tribute to Black women, it feels transcendent. Jeremy Helligar, Variety Brown Skin Girl is especially moving, showing Beyoncé, Rowland and Blue Ivy together in a strong visual affirmation of generational black womanhood. Giselle Au-Nhien Nguyen, Sydney Morning HeraldWill Black Is King move you?I’ll admit, I got emotional when Beyoncé and former Destiny Child’s member Kelly Rowland were singing praises to each other. Anna Menta, DeciderIt is impossible to watch the emotive story unfold, accompanied by Warsan Shire’s poetry, Yrsa Daley-Ward’s writing and warm images of west Africa, without feeling emotional. Chanté Joseph, Guardian(Photo by Disney+)Are there any imperfections? The uneven music of the original soundtrack, though enhanced by the visual accompaniment, can still be hit or miss. Jeremy Helligar, VarietyThere is one part that I would totally skip if I were to watch it again. The celestial stuff… For me, it felt a little weird and out of place. Tessa Smith, Mama s GeekyIt’s mildly disappointing that more inspiration isn’t drawn from East Africa given that’s where The Lion King is set. Amon Warmann, Empire MagazineHow important is Black Is King to young Black people in particular?Black Is King, if nothing else, will perhaps inspire them to learn about the history of their race and the ways in which it has shaped the world. Jeremy Helligar, VarietyThere’s an urgency in the way that Beyoncé is addressing the black kings, as if she feels like she’s running out of time. Anna Menta, DeciderBlack Is King is both her gift and her hope for humanity. Jude Dry, IndieWireRyan FujitaniIs this another masterpiece for our time?Black Is King [is] vital to the current conversation in a way that no one could have foreseen, but is most welcome. Amon Warmann, Empire MagazineHer visual album has taken on new meaning following the reemergence of the Black Lives Matter movement and the fight against police brutality and racism. Cydney Henderson, USA TodayWith the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement this year, Black Is King is a timely, powerful declaration of pride. Giselle Au-Nhien Nguyen, Sydney Morning HeraldWith this vivid celebration, she goes way beyond saying Black Lives Matter to showing the dazzling inspiration of her ancestry. David Smyth, London Evening StandardThe film is being released at a time when Disney is coming to terms with some of its own racist past. Steve Pond, The WrapWhat the world needs now is love, sweet, love, and this colorful reminder of the power and glory of Black, here in America but even more so in Africa. Jeremy Helligar, VarietyBlack Is King premieres on Disney+ on Friday, July 31.

Nevertheless, Garland noted conversations moving from the possibility of a mulitverse where free will exists to a deterministic view where there is no choice elicits an equally strong emotional response.“If I have a conversation with people about free will, nobody likes the idea that they don t have it. And it is completely in contradiction with our own sense — ‘But I absolutely, definitely have free will. I can feel it now,’ [they say], which is again, it s what people feel, but it may not be supported by the data.”That view, as espoused by Forest, leads Devs’ main character, Lily Chan (Sonoya Mizuno), onto her collision course with the warm and melancholy Amaya CEO. And while discussing Lilly’s actions would lead to a level of spoilers we definitely cannot reveal in this or any other reality, it did lead to another question the show presents: Do ethics exist in a deterministic universe?“I don t personally think it takes ethics and morality out of the conversation, I just think it means you react differently to the state of affairs,” Garland said.(Photo by Miya Mizuno/FX)To illustrate morality in a deterministic universe, he used a 15-year-old boy mugging someone at knife point as an example. In a universe with free will, the boy’s punishment (provided he is caught) proceeds from the notion he is in absolute control of his choices.“If you take deterministic view, you might say, ‘Well, hang on a minute. Because this kid is a crystal meth addict, and both his parents were crystal meth addicts, and he was addicted by the time he was 12, and he was trapped in a world that had given him a very distorted sense of ethics, and, as well as that, a sense of desperation, and no home, that led ultimately to the mugging.’ Under those circumstances, punishing the kid makes much less sense. Rehabilitating a kid makes much more sense.”“What we do then is make sure that [the kid doesn’t] do it again, Garland suggested. So, that doesn t remove the ethics, because you still don t want the kid to mug anybody. It s just more that you re not punishing him for something that wasn t his own decision.”Of course, Garland was quick to point out that while his example leads to a morality with more empathy and compassion, it also suggests atrocities are also unavoidable in a deterministic universe. “I don t think anybody wants to let Adolf Hitler off the hook in the way that you might let a 15-year-old off the hook,” he quipped.Nonetheless, the morality of what Forest calls “tram lines” will no doubt feature in discussions of Devs when its full shape is revealed with the show s finale six weeks from now.

Finding those key story threads was television series creator A.C. Bradley, who relished the chance to remix key MCU moments.“Going into this process, I was already a pretty diehard Marvel fan. I ve probably seen the movies on repeat a dozen times a piece,” she said. She also had access to every script draft of every film back to Iron Man. Combing through all that story material, it became apparent to center the series as character-first. The T’Challa episode, for example, illustrates how different the cosmos would be if his spirit and sense of empathy was out among the stars. Getting a strong sense of character also meant the show could be playful with the MCU.“After we figured out what we wanted to say with the character, how to play around with the icon, [we could ask,] ‘OK, how many Easter eggs, how many pieces of the world can we pull in? How do we remix this?’” she said. “One of my favorite things to do with all pieces of modern media is say, ‘How do we take what we know, and deconstruct it? Whether it be a character and action sequence, a world, where s the something new to say? And what do we want to say? (Photo by Courtesy of Marvel Studios)In the opening trio of stories, the results of playing with the MCU canon lead to a less-buttoned down Peggy, Korath the Pursuer as someone’s No. 1 Fan, and a truly compelling mystery in the third episode – a story Bradley jokingly referred to as “Law and Order: MCU.”Buoying the playfulness is the cast. Nearly everyone who ever played a named Marvel character in a Marvel Studios picture returned to lend their voice to a What If ? counterpart.“I was afraid to get nobody, to be honest with you,” Winderbaum said. “And in my wildest dreams, I thought maybe we get 50 percent. The fact that we got like 85, 90 percent of the talent to return is insane, first and foremost. And I think it s because in most cases they kind of got the concept and were excited to play with their character. Wait til you meet [Chris Hemsworth as] Party Thor!”In a handful of cases, though, in which actors were unavailable or (as Dave Bautista alleges) never had the chance to record, the production looked to seasoned actors like Lake Bell not to be sound-a-likes, but embody the characters with slightly different takes.“We were more concerned with getting good actors who would create three-dimensional performances, than we were with nailing the voice,” Winderbaum said. “If you can t deliver the emotional depth that the performance requires, people aren t going to experience empathy for the character.”Bell’s take on a certain character is particularly striking … but we’ll let you discover who she plays once the credits role.In addition to Atwell, Boseman, and Hemsworth, the MCU stars reprising their roles include: Andy Serkis, Angela Bassett, Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Benicio Del Toro, Bradley Whitford, Carrie Coon, Chris Sullivan, Clancy Brown, Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders, Danai Gurira, David Dastmalchian, Djimon Hounsou, Dominic Cooper, Don Cheadle, Emily VanCamp, Evangeline Lilly, Frank Grillo, Georges St-Pierre, Jaimie Alexander, Jeff Goldblum, Jeremy Renner, John Kani, Jon Favreau, Josh Brolin, Karen Gillan, Kat Dennings, Kurt Russell, Leslie Bibb, Mark Ruffalo, Michael B.
